A critical issue in the study of mate choice is the analysisof the stimuli that elicit and regulate sexual behavior. Studieswith Japanese quail, several mammalian species, and a fish species(the blue gourami) indicate that the stimulus control of sexualbehavior is determined in part by what animals learn as a resultof sexual interactions in adulthood.Species specific stimuliprovided by a sexual partner can become conditioned by sexualreinforcement and thereby come to elicit more vigorous socialbehavior. Discrete localized stimuli as well as spatial contextualcues of the environment in which social interactions occur canalso become conditioned. Sexually conditioned localized stimulimay elicit approach and?/or courtship conditioned responsesand may increase responding to species specific eliciting stimuliprovided by a sexual partner. Sexually conditioned contextualstimuli also may increase responding to species specific stimulusfeatures of a sexual partner. These findings indicate that thefeatures of a conspecific to which an animal responds sometimesmay be determined by what that animal has learned as a resultof sexual experience. The findings also suggest that a completeaccount of the stimulus control of sexual behavior requiresconsideration of not only stimulus aspects of conspecifics thatelicit sexual responses but also discrete and contextual environmentalstimuli that may become associated with sexual experience. 相似文献

Models of mutual mate choice predict that when the costs of mating indiscriminately increase, so may the choosiness of the conventionally non-choosy sex. In a series of behavioral trials, we tested both male and female chemo-reception and mate choice in the hide beetle, Dermestes maculatus. Using olfactometer bioassays we found that males detected and responded more rapidly to individual mated females but had a limited ability to detect virgin females or discriminate between virgin and mated females when presented simultaneously. Both mated and virgin females were unable to detect the presence of virgin males. Copulation behaviors were comparable when males were presented with a virgin or mated female either individually or simultaneously. However, when presented simultaneously, virgin females had a higher probability of receiving a copulation than their mated counterparts. Our data show that males respond to variation in female reproductive status, but that female propensity to mate does not change. We suggest that mutual mate choice may be an important force, even in systems in which there is apparently strong selection for female mate discrimination. 相似文献

The relative contributions of neutral and adaptive substitutions to molecular evolution has been one of the most controversial issues in evolutionary biology for more than 40 years. The analysis of within-species nucleotide polymorphism and between-species divergence data supports a widespread role for adaptive protein evolution in certain taxa. For example, estimates of the proportion of adaptive amino acid substitutions (α) are 50% or more in enteric bacteria and Drosophila. In contrast, recent estimates of α for hominids have been at most 13%. Here, we estimate α for protein sequences of murid rodents based on nucleotide polymorphism data from multiple genes in a population of the house mouse subspecies Mus musculus castaneus, which inhabits the ancestral range of the Mus species complex and nucleotide divergence between M. m. castaneus and M. famulus or the rat. We estimate that 57% of amino acid substitutions in murids have been driven by positive selection. Hominids, therefore, are exceptional in having low apparent levels of adaptive protein evolution. The high frequency of adaptive amino acid substitutions in wild mice is consistent with their large effective population size, leading to effective natural selection at the molecular level. Effective natural selection also manifests itself as a paucity of effectively neutral nonsynonymous mutations in M. m. castaneus compared to humans. 相似文献

This paper reviews work conducted over the last several yearson the effect of genetic differences within the t-complex ofwild house mice on female mating preference. Wild mice are polymorphicfor a mutation within the t complex on chromosome 17. About25% of wild mice are heterozygous (+/t) for a t-haplotype andthe remainder are +/+. These t-haplotypes have a number of deleteriouseffects when homozygous and hence t/t individuals are rarelyfound in wild populations. We have examined preferences of +/+and +/t females for males of both genotypes. We have found that+/t, but not +/+ females have strong preferences for +/+ males.These preferences can be modified by a variety of factors includingestrous condition of the female (the preferences are strongeramong estrous than diestrous females) and the dominance statusof the male (when forced to choose, females give priority tomale dominance status over t complex genotype in choosing males).The restiction of preference to +/t females indicates that geneson t haplotypes modulate these preferences. Because t haplotypesinclude the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the mousewe designed a study to ascertain whether the preferences of+/t females were associated with the MHC. Results of the studyindicate that the preferences are independent of the MHC. Furtherwork testing females carrying a partial t-haplotype (tw18) indicatesthat the genes for mating preference are localized in the regionof the t complex distal to the MHC. A large number of t haplotypesare found in wild mouse populations. Females that are themselves+/t when forced to choose between 2 +/t males (one carryinga haplotype that is the same as their own and one carrying ahaplotype that is different) prefer males carrying t-haplotypesthat differ from their own. Finally, we conclude that matingpreference may only be a weak force regulating the frequencyof t-mutations in wild mouse populations. The impact of matingpreference on population genetics of genes within this regionis muted because of the great importance of male dominance rankin determining mating patterns within interacting social groups. 相似文献

European coastal waters have in recent years become more turbid as algal growth has increased, probably due to eutrophication, global warming and changes in fish communities. Turbidity reduces visibility, and such changes may in turn affect animal behaviour as well as evolutionary processes that are dependent on visual stimuli. In this study we experimentally manipulated water visibility and olfactory cues to investigate mate choice using the sex role‐reversed broad‐nosed pipefish Syngnathus typhle as our study organism. We show that males spent significantly longer time assessing females when they had access to full visual cues, compared to when visibility was reduced. Presence or absence of olfactory cues from females did not affect mate choice, suggesting that the possible use of smell could not make up for a reduction in visibility. This implies that mate choice is environmentally dependent and that an increased turbidity may affect processes of sexual selection through an impaired possibility for visually based mate choice. 相似文献

Background
Attentional dysfunction is related to functional disability in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer''s disease. Indeed, sustained attention/vigilance is among the leading targets for new medications designed to improve cognition in schizophrenia. Although vigilance is assessed frequently using the continuous performance test (CPT) in humans, few tests specifically assess vigilance in rodents.Methods
We describe the 5-choice CPT (5C-CPT), an elaboration of the 5-choice serial reaction (5CSR) task that includes non-signal trials, thus mimicking task parameters of human CPTs that use signal and non-signal events to assess vigilance. The performances of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice were assessed in the 5C-CPT to determine whether this task could differentiate between strains. C57BL/6J mice were also trained in the 5CSR task and a simple reaction-time (RT) task involving only one choice (1CRT task). We hypothesized that: 1) C57BL/6J performance would be superior to DBA/2J mice in the 5C-CPT as measured by the sensitivity index measure from signal detection theory; 2) a vigilance decrement would be observed in both strains; and 3) RTs would increase across tasks with increased attentional load (1CRT task<5CSR task<5C-CPT).Conclusions
C57BL/6J mice exhibited superior SI levels compared to DBA/2J mice, but with no difference in accuracy. A vigilance decrement was observed in both strains, which was more pronounced in DBA/2J mice and unaffected by response bias. Finally, we observed increased RTs with increased attentional load, such that 1CRT task<5CSR task<5C-CPT, consistent with human performance in simple RT, choice RT, and CPT tasks. Thus we have demonstrated construct validity for the 5C-CPT as a measure of vigilance that is analogous to human CPT studies. 相似文献8.

Mating and consequently reproductive success in male vertebrates are predominantly determined by intermale competition and female mate choice. Their relative importance however, is still poorly understood. We investigated the interrelationship between male dominance rank — a formal indicator of male competitive ability — female mate choice, and male mating success in a multimale-multifemale group of captive chimpanzees. In addition, we examined the relationship between male dominance rank and reproductive success determined by genetic paternity analysis over a 13-yr period in the same captive population. We related the frequencies of sociosexual behaviors to the female anogenital swelling stage and female fertile phase as determined by urinary and fecal progestogen analysis. Rates of behaviors in both sexes increased with increasing intensity of female swelling, but they were not influenced by the timing of the fertile phase. Male mating success was clearly related to male dominance rank, with high-ranking males performing the overwhelming majority of copulations. This was mainly due to both rank-related rates of male soliciting behavior and intermale aggressiveness during the period of well-developed female anogenital swelling. Although females solicited copulations mainly from the high-ranking males and thus expressed a mate choice based on rank, their overall contribution in initiating copulations and thus influencing male mating success was low. The data on paternity from the population, which always contained 4 adult males, revealed that -males sired the majority (65%) of offspring. We conclude, that male dominance rank is an important determinant of male mating and reproductive success in captive (and presumably wild) chimpanzees and that female mate choice is of minor importance in modulating male reproductive outcome. 相似文献

Changes in density and breeding of the house mouse (Mus musculus) in a New Zealand forest dominated by hard beech (Nothofagus truncata) were monitored for 2.5 years. Mice bred during winter and increased dramatically in density only during a beech mast year. Mice readily ate the endosperm and embryo of hard beech seed in die laboratory and chemical analysis showed it to be a very nutritious food source, similar in quality to Fagus beech seed in the northern hemisphere. Thus the mouse, introduced to New Zealand, responds to a Nothofagus mast year in a similar way to other rodent species in the northern hemisphere during a Fagus mast year. 相似文献

Infectious disease outbreaks can be devastating because of their sudden occurrence, as well as the complexity of monitoring and controlling them. Outbreaks in wildlife are even more challenging to observe and describe, especially when small animals or secretive species are involved. Modeling such infectious disease events is relevant to investigating their dynamics and is critical for decision makers to accomplish outbreak management. Tularemia, caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis, is a potentially lethal zoonosis. Of the few animal outbreaks that have been reported in the literature, only those affecting zoo animals have been closely monitored. 0 of an outbreak in wildlife caused by F. tularensis using quantitative modeling based on a susceptible-infected-recovered framework. We applied that model to data collected during an extensive investigation of an outbreak of tularemia caused by F. tularensis subsp. holarctica (also designated as type B) in a closely monitored, free-roaming house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus) population in Switzerland. The detection and avoidance of parasitized conspecifics is proposed to have important consequences for the behavior of animals, especially as related to mate choice. A reduction in pain sensitivity (i.e. analgesia) is a major correlate of exposure to real or potential danger and threatening stimuli, facilitating the expression of various active (e.g. fleeing) and passive (e.g. immobilization) defense responses. The present study examined pain sensitivity (latency of a foot-lifting response to 50 ° C thermal surface) of female mice, Mus musculus, that were exposed to the urine and other odor secretions of male mice subclinically infected with the naturally occurring, enteric, sporozoan parasite, Eimeria vermiformis. A 30-min exposure to the odors of a parasitized male induced an analgesia in the female mice that was found to be mediated by the increased activity of endogenous opioid peptide systems. A brief 1-min exposure to the male odors induced a shorter duration and lower amplitude analgesia of a non-opioid (serotonergic) nature. Maximum analgesic responses were induced by the odors of pre-infective [5 days post-infection (PI)] and infective (day 10 PI) males, with significantly lower responses elicited by the odors of post-infective (day 17 PI) male mice. Exposure to the odors of unparasitized males had no significant effects on the pain sensitivity of female mice. These results indicate that female mice can distinguish between the odors of parasitized and non-parasitized male mice, and find the odors of parasitized males threatening and/or stressful. These odor-induced analgesic responses and their neurohormonal correlates may be part of an adaptive preparatory defense mechanism that facilitates the detection and avoidance of parasitized males by female mice and contributes to female mate choice. 相似文献

Amount of calling activity (calling effort) is a strong determinant of male mating success in species such as orthopterans and anurans that use acoustic communication in the context of mating behaviour. While many studies in crickets have investigated the determinants of calling effort, patterns of variability in male calling effort in natural choruses remain largely unexplored. Within-individual variability in calling activity across multiple nights of calling can influence female mate search and mate choice strategies. Moreover, calling site fidelity across multiple nights of calling can also affect the female mate sampling strategy. We therefore investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of acoustic signaling behaviour in a wild population of the field cricket species Plebeiogryllus guttiventris. We first studied the consistency of calling activity by quantifying variation in male calling effort across multiple nights of calling using repeatability analysis. Callers were inconsistent in their calling effort across nights and did not optimize nightly calling effort to increase their total number of nights spent calling. We also estimated calling site fidelity of males across multiple nights by quantifying movement of callers. Callers frequently changed their calling sites across calling nights with substantial displacement but without any significant directionality. Finally, we investigated trade-offs between within-night calling effort and energetically expensive calling song features such as call intensity and chirp rate. Calling effort was not correlated with any of the calling song features, suggesting that energetically expensive song features do not constrain male calling effort. The two key features of signaling behaviour, calling effort and call intensity, which determine the duration and spatial coverage of the sexual signal, are therefore uncorrelated and function independently. 相似文献

In many species of birds, individual males possess "repertoires"of multiple versions of the species song. Females of severalof these species have been shown to respond preferentially incourtship to larger song repertoires. The female preferencefor large repertoires usually has little effect on female settlement,but is likely to affect mate choice in extra-pair copulations.A number of hypotheses have been proposed to explain the evolutionof the female preference. Some of these posit a natural selectiveadvantage for the preference, in securing for the female a betterterritory, better paternal care for the offspring, or a matewith good genes. Another hypothesis suggests the male traitand female preference have coevolved in a process of runawaysexual selection. Here I show that female common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula)court preferentially for repertoires of four song types comparedto equal numbers of repetitions of single song types.The femalepreference exists in common grackles despite the fact that malesin this species sing only one song type each. None of the usualhypotheses, based on natural or sexual selection, can explainthe occurrence of the female preference in a species in whichmales lack the preferred trait. Instead, the female preferencemay be a simple consequence of two properties of most responsesystems: habituation and stimulus specificity. If so, femalepreferences for repertoires may in general pre-date the evolutionof male song repertoires, which evolve to exploit the pre-existingfemale response bias. 相似文献

Research on mate choice has primarily focused on preferences for quality indicators, assuming that all individuals show consensus about who is the most attractive. However, in some species, mating preferences seem largely individual-specific, suggesting that they might target genetic or behavioral compatibility. Few studies have quantified the fitness consequences of allowing versus preventing such idiosyncratic mate choice. Here, we report on an experiment that controls for variation in overall partner quality and show that zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) pairs that resulted from free mate choice achieved a 37% higher reproductive success than pairs that were forced to mate. Cross-fostering of freshly laid eggs showed that embryo mortality (before hatching) primarily depended on the identity of the genetic parents, whereas offspring mortality during the rearing period depended on foster-parent identity. Therefore, preventing mate choice should lead to an increase in embryo mortality if mate choice targets genetic compatibility (for embryo viability), and to an increase in offspring mortality if mate choice targets behavioral compatibility (for better rearing). We found that pairs from both treatments showed equal rates of embryo mortality, but chosen pairs were better at raising offspring. These results thus support the behavioral, but not the genetic, compatibility hypothesis. Further exploratory analyses reveal several differences in behavior and fitness components between “free-choice” and “forced” pairs. 相似文献

a stronger preference for the larger female in the video playback treatment than in the clear glass (two-way interaction)

While studies of mate choice based on male color pattern are ubiquitous, studies of mate choice based on ornamental color traits in sexually monomorphic species are less common. We conducted manipulative field experiments on two color ornaments of king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus), the size of auricular patches of orange feathers and degree of UV reflectance from beak spots, to determine how the degree of ornamentation influenced pairing rate. In a reduction of auricular patch size, females paired significantly more quickly than males in both control and experimental samples. When this bias was taken into account statistically, pairing of individuals with reduced auricular patches was significantly delayed. We also reduced, but did not eliminate, UV reflectance from beak spots by applying a UV filter; no sex difference in pairing rate was evident in this experiment. Treated birds paired significantly more slowly than untreated control individuals, taking more than a week longer to pair on average than their unmanipulated counterparts, a result that was significant for males and approached significance for females. Our results may indicate mutual mate choice via UV reflectance of the beak spot. Given that this is a species where breeding is extremely slow and considerable investment by both males and females is required for successful reproduction, our results support the hypothesis that in such species, sexual selection might act on the same ornament in both sexes. 相似文献

PCR diagnostics detected 100% prevalence of Helicobacter in 425 wild house mice (Mus musculus) from across central Europe. Of seven species identified, the five most frequent were Helicobacter rodentium (78%), H. typhlonius (53%), H. hepaticus (41%), H. bilis (30%), and H. muridarum (1%). Double infections were more common (42%) than single (30%) and triple (21%) infections. Wild house mice could be considered potential reservoirs of Helicobacter strains for both humans and other vertebrates. 相似文献
