The nervous system of the planula larva of Anthopleura elegantissima consists of an apical organ, one type of endodermal receptor cell, two types of ectodermal receptor cells, central neurons and nerve plexus. Both interneural and neuromuscular synapses are found in the nerve plexus. The apical organ is a collection of about 100 long, columnar cells each bearing a long cilium and a collar of about 10 microvilli. The cilia of the apical organ are twisted together to form an apical tuft. The ciliary rootlets of the apical organ cells are extremely long, reaching to the basal processes of the cells adjacent to the mesoglea. All three types of sensory cells are tall and slender in profile and are identified by the presence of one or more of the following features: microtubules, small vesicles, membrane-bound granules and synapses. The interneurons are bipolar cells with somas restricted to the aboral end, adjacent to the apical organ. All synapses observed are polarized or asymmetrical. A diagram including all the elements of the nervous system is presented and the possible functions of the nervous system are discussed in relation to larval behavior.  相似文献

Pyramidal, aspinous, sparsely-spinous bipolar and multipolar neurons of the rat sensomotor cerebral cortex, impregnated after Golgi method, have been studied at an electron microscopical level. The ultrastructural characteristics of the pyramidal neurons differs from that of the nonpyramidal cells. Distribution of various synaptic contacts on the cellular surface and cortical postsynaptic targets of the axonal arborizations of the neurons are revealed. On the body of the pyramidal cells only symmetrical synapses exist, on large dendritic trunks symmetrical synapses prevail, on the spines and the terminal dendritic branches assymetrical synapses mainly predominate. Axonal collateralies of the pyramidal cells form asymmetrical synapses on the spines, small and middle dendrites. There are more axo-somatic synapses on the bodies of the nonpyramidal neurons than on the pyramidal cells, among them both symmetrical and asymmetrical types of the synapses occur. On the trunks and small dendrites of the nonpyramidal cells both types of synaptic contacts are revealed. In the distal direction of the dendrites the number of the asymmetrical synapses becomes predominating. Axons of the bipolar cells form asymmetrical synapses on the spines, small and middle dendrites. Axons of the multipolar cells form symmetrical synapses on the dendrites and the dendritic trunks of the nondifferentiated cells. Differences in the distribution character of the synaptic inlets and various postsynaptic targets of the axonal systems in the cells assume various functional role of the identified neurons.  相似文献

Neurosecretory (Nsy) cells within the cerebral ganglion of Lumbricus terrestris were classified ultrastructurally. The Nsy cells within the subesophageal ganglion, nerve cord ganglion, and the peripheral nervous system were also examined. A comparative survey of Nsy cells of four other species of oligochaetes, Eisenia feotida, octolasion cyaneum, Dendrobeona subrubicunda, and Allolophora longa, was also carried out. Seven cell types (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, C, and SEF), distinguished by special cytological and ultrastructural features, were found within the cerebral ganglion. Distribution of these cells inside and outside the cerebral ganglion was studied in detail by light and electron microscopy. The nerve terminals of each cell type were followed into the neuropile region. Exocytosis from cell bodies appears to be the main release mechanism for the Nsy granules, whereas small Nsy vesicles are released through synapses in the neuropile. Peripheral fibers of some cell types (A1, A2, and A3) extend through the capsule to the pericapsular epithelium. It is possible that Nsy cells secrete hormones from their cell bodies and peripheral processes and that their centrally directed axons release modulators/transmitters within the neuropile.  相似文献

The peripheral nervous system and the synapses of G. hermaphroditus are studied with the electron microscope. There is a submuscular as well as a subepithelial plexus. The subepithelial plexus is found among the muscles and between the muscles and the basement membrane. It consists of fibres containing large lucent and lysosome-like vesicles and fibres with only small lucent (synaptic) vesicles. In the deeper lying submuscular plexus also dense and dense-cored vesicles occur in the fibres. Cell bodies are not observed in the plexuses. The separate nerve supplies of the pharynx and the gonads contain nerve cells of the neurosecretory type. Fibres of the same kinds as in the brain are also seen here. The synapses in the neuropile are of two kinds. 1. Symmetrical synapses with an additional presynaptic network are most common. 2. Synapses without thickenings of membranes are observed between lateral membranes of neurites. In the peripheral nervous system are two other kinds of synapses also observed. 1. Asymmertical synapses with a denser and wider postsynaptic thickening and 2. neuromuscular junctions. Neurites containing accumulations of small vesicles against the basement membrane are also described. The organization of the peripheral nervous system is described and discussed in relation to the systematic position of G. hermaphroditus.  相似文献

The four rhopalia of cubomedusae are integrated parts of the central nervous system carrying their many eyes and thought to be the centres of visual information processing. Rhopalial pacemakers control locomotion through a complex neural signal transmitted to the ring nerve and the signal frequency is modulated by the visual input. Since electrical synapses have never been found in the cubozoan nervous system all signals are thought to be transmitted across chemical synapses, and so far information about the neurotransmitters involved are based on immunocytochemical or behavioural data. Here we present the first direct physiological evidence for the types of neurotransmitters involved in sensory information processing in the rhopalial nervous system. FMRFamide, serotonin and dopamine are shown to have inhibitory effect on the pacemaker frequency. There are some indications that the fast acting acetylcholine and glycine have an initial effect and then rapidly desensitise. Other tested neuroactive compounds (GABA, glutamate, and taurine) could not be shown to have a significant effect.  相似文献

Cubomedusae, or box jellyfish, have the most elaborate visual system of all cnidarians. They have 24 eyes of four morphological types, distributed on four sensory structures called rhopalia. Box jellyfish also display complex, probably visually guided behaviors such as obstacle avoidance and fast directional swimming. Here we describe the strikingly complex and partially bilaterally symmetrical nervous system found in each rhopalium of the box jellyfish, Tripedalia cystophora, and present the rhopalial neuroanatomy in an atlas-like series of drawings. Discrete populations of neurons and commissures connecting the left and the right side along with two populations of nonneuronal cells were visualized using several different histochemical staining techniques and electron microscopy. The number of rhopalial nerve cells and their overall arrangement indicates that visual processing and integration at least partly happen within the rhopalia. The larger of the two nonneuronal cell populations comprises approximately 2,000 likely undifferentiated cells and may support a rapid cell turnover in the rhopalial nervous system.  相似文献

Glial cells   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
The nervous system is built from two broad categories of cells, neurones and glial cells. The glial cells outnumber the neurones and the two cell types occupy a comparable amount of space in nervous tissue. The main glial cell types are, in the central nervous system, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes and, in the peripheral nervous system, Schwann cells, enteric glial cells and satellite cells. In the embryo, glial cells form a cellular framework that permits the development of the rest of the nervous system, and regulate neuronal survival and differentiation. The best known function of glia in the adult is the formation of myelin sheaths around axons thus allowing the fast conduction of signalling essential for nervous system function. Glia also maintain appropriate concentrations of ions and neurotransmitters in the neuronal environment. Increasing body of evidence indicates that glial cells are essential regulators of the formation, maintenance and function of synapses, the key functional unit of the nervous system.  相似文献

Synapses are highly specialized contact sites between neurons and their target cells where information in the form of chemical substances travels from a pre- to a postsynaptic cell. In the central nervous system of mammals, most nerve cells are innervated by functionally distinct types of synapses, each requiring a specific set of molecular constituents for proper function. Various molecular players that may be involved in the assembly of synaptic junctions have been identified recently.  相似文献

Quantitative electronmicroscopic studies have been made on the development of synapses in two modally different areas of the brain (V-VI layers of the visual and auditory cortex) in the rat and mouse Acomys cahirinus within first two weeks of their postnatal life. The density of synapses as well the relative amount of different types of synapses (symmetrical, asymmetrical, axo-spinal and synapses with large amounts of synaptic vesicles) were measured. It was shown that only in rats the development of synapses in the visual area usually is faster than in the auditory one.  相似文献

Natural killer (NK) cells discern the health of other cells by recognising the balance of activating and inhibitory ligands expressed by each target cell. However, how the integration of activating and inhibitory signals relates to formation of the NK cell immune synapse remains a central question in our understanding of NK cell recognition. Here we report that ligation of LFA-1 on NK cells induced asymmetrical cell spreading and migration. In contrast, ligation of the activating receptor NKG2D induced symmetrical spreading of ruffled lamellipodia encompassing a dynamic ring of f-actin, concurrent with polarization towards a target cell and a “stop” signal. Ligation of both LFA-1 and NKG2D together resulted in symmetrical spreading but co-ligation of inhibitory receptors reverted NK cells to an asymmetrical migratory configuration leading to inhibitory synapses being smaller and more rapidly disassembled. Using micropatterned activating and inhibitory ligands, signals were found to be continuously and locally integrated during spreading. Together, these data demonstrate that NK cells spread to form large, stable, symmetrical synapses if activating signals dominate, whereas asymmetrical migratory “kinapses” are favoured if inhibitory signals dominate. This clarifies how the integration of activating and inhibitory receptor signals is translated to an appropriate NK cell response.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of nerve cells and the finestructural organization of synaptic contacts have been investigated in the intestinal nerve in the snail Helix pomatia. Three types of nerve cells, occurring singly or in groups, can be distinguished on the basis of the ultrastructure of their perikaryon and content of granules. The peripheral output of these nerve cells has been verified by retrograde CoCl2 and NiCl2 staining. Both axosomatic and axo-axonic specialized synaptic contacts occur in the intestinal nerve. Presynaptic elements of these synaptic contacts contain 100–120 nm granular vesicles or 120–200 nm neurosecretory-like granules. Following intracellular horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelling of identified central neurons responsible for peripheral regulatory processes, several labelled axons running toward the periphery can be followed throughout the branches of the intestinal nerve. These labelled axon processes (either primary axon or small collaterals) form specialized synaptic contacts, inside the intestinal nerve, and are always in a postsynaptic position. The occurrence of peripheral axo-somatic and axo-axonic synapses provides a morphological basis for integrative processes taking place in the intestinal nerve (peripheral nervous system) of Helix pomatia.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of differentiating rat presumptive olfactory bulb in organ culture was investigated with particular reference to mitral cell differentiation and formation of synapses. The presumptive olfactory bulb and olfactory mucosa were dissected en bloc from rat embryos on the fifteenth day of gestation and cultured for 7 days, after which the expiants were examined by electron microscopy. The presumptive olfactory bulb had differentiated into a laminated structure with layers corresponding to the glomerular, external plexiform and mitral cell layers. Mitral-like cells were identified by their location and large cell size. Ultrastructural observations indicated that they were relatively well-differentiated. Their dendrites extended into the glomerular layer in which they were postsynaptic to incoming olfactory axons. The distal part of these dendrites frequently contained coated vesicles. Both asymmetrical and symmetrical synapses were found. The symmetrical synapses involved dendrodendritic contacts between periglomerular cells. Synapses in reciprocal arrangements were not observed in the organ cultures.  相似文献

The distribution of synapses and synaptic bouton types in the mesencephalic trigeminal (Me5) nucleus was examined in a quantitative electron-microscopical study. Of 588 terminal boutons that were counted in the compact caudal part of the Me5 nucleus, less than 8% formed synapses on the somata of the predominantly unipolar Me5 neurons. About 79% formed synapses on fibres located between the Me5 somata, while about 13% of the vesicle-containing terminals had no clear synaptic specialization. All of these non-synaptic terminals were G type boutons, with pleomorphic and large characteristic dense-core vesicles. Approximately 60% of the axosomatic synapses were of the S type, containing spherical vesicles and an asymmetrical or symmetrical synaptic specialization. About 20, respectively 15% of the axosomatic synapses, were of the F, respectively P type; both are symmetrical synapse types containing either a majority of flat or pleomorphic vesicles. Less than 10% of the axosomatic synapses were of the G type. Although some proportional differences were noted, an almost similar bouton type distribution pattern was found for the axodendritic synapses suggesting that the axosomatic and axodendritic synapses in the Me5 nucleus are part of the same afferent fibre plexus covering the Me5 nucleus.  相似文献

Peptidergic synaptic transmission in sympathetic ganglia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Biologically active peptides have been localized in neuronal cell bodies, axons, and synaptic boutons of sympathetic ganglia; some of these peptides may be neurotransmitters. For example, substances immunologically similar to substance P and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone appear to be released from nerve terminals in sympathetic ganglia. In each case, the postsynaptic action of the peptide lasts for several minutes and is accompanied by a combination of decreases and increases in the membrane conductance that are voltage dependent. These peripheral peptidergic synapses may be models for peptidergic transmission in the central nervous system where detailed analysis is more difficult.  相似文献

The ultrastructural features of the primary auditory cortex of the cats and the character of the endings of geniculo-cortical afferent fibers in the early stages of experimental degeneration evoked by destruction of the medial geniculate body were studied. In all layers of the cortex asymmetrical synapses with round synaptic vesicles on dendritic spines and on thin dendritic branches of pyramidal and nonpyramidal neurons are predominant. Symmetrical synapses with flattened or polymorphic vesicles are distributed chiefly on the bodies of the neurons and their large dendrites. Because there are few symmetrical synapses which could be regarded as inhibitory it is postulated that inhibitory influences may also be transmitted through asymmetrical synapses with round vesicles. Other types of contacts between the bodies of neurons, dendrites, and glial processes also were found in the auditory cortex. Degenerating terminals of geniculo-cortical fibers were shown to terminate chiefly in layer IV of the cortex on pyramidal and nonpyramidal neurons. Degeneration was of the dark type in asymmetrical synapses with round vesicles. The results are dicussed in connection with electrophysiological investigations of the auditory cortex.A. A. Within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the rat the fine structure of the synapses and some features of their topological arrangement were studied. Five types of synapses could be distinguished with certainty: A. Two types of Gray-type-I (GTI) or asymmetrical synapses (approximately 33%). The presynaptic elements contain strikingly different types of mitochondria. Size of clear vesicles: approximately 450 A. Synapses with subjunctional bodies often occur, among these also "crest synapses". Localization: dendritic shafts and spines, rarely somata. B. Three types of Gray-type-2 (GTII) or symmetrical synapses (approximately 66%):1) Axo-dendritic and -somatic (=AD) synapses. Size of clear vesicles: approximately 500 A. 2) Invaginated axo-dendritic and -somatic (=IAD) synapses with club-like postsynaptic protrusions within the presynaptic elements (PreE1). Size of clear vesicles is very variable: approximately 400-1,000 A. 3) Dendro-dendritic, -somatic and somato-dendritic (=DD) synapses occurring at least partly in reciprocal arrangements. They represent an intrinsic system. Shape of clear vesicles: often oval; sucrose treatment partly produces flattening. Dense core-vesicles (dcv) are found in all GTII- and most of the GTI-synapses after three-dimensional reconstruction. All types of synapses (mostly GTII-synapses) can be enclosed by multilamellar astroglial formations. The synapses often occur in complex synaptic arrangements. Dendrites and somata of females show significantly more multivesiculated bodies than those of males. Further pecularities of presynaptic (PreELs) and postsynaptic elements (PostELs) within the SCN are described and discussed.  相似文献

Synapses, which are the fundamental functional unit of the nervous system, are considered to be highly specialized cell adhesion structures. Studies since the 1960s demonstrated that various carbohydrates and glycoproteins are expressed in synapses in the central and peripheral nervous system. Although the functional roles of these synaptic carbohydrates and glycoproteins remain to be determined, rapidly accumulating data suggest that they may play critical roles in the formation, maturation, and functional modulation of synapses.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the central nervous system of four species of the Geocentrophoragroup (Prorhynchida, Lecithoepitheliata) has been studied with Geocentrophora waginias a model organism. This is the first ultrastructural study of the nervous system in flatworms of the endemic Geocentrophoragroup from Lake Baikal. The neurons are characterized by invaginations of the plasma membrane with extracellular material (ECM) extending deep into the neuronal cytoplasm. Two types of neuron are distinguished on the basis of the character of the cytoplasm and the content of neuronal vesicles. Several more vesicle types are observed in the nerve processes in the neuropile. The following kinds of neuronal release sites are distinguished: single synapses, shared synapses, nonsynaptic release sites characterized by omega profiles and neuromuscular contacts. Special features of the synapses in the species of Geocentrophoraare pronounced local thickenings of the presynaptic membrane connected to paramembraneous densities. The ECM-filled invaginations and the local presynaptic thickenings are features that distinguish the neurons of Geocentrophoraspp. from previously described turbellarian neurons.  相似文献
