Analysis of stand structure and spatial patterning indicates that Lagarostrobos franklinii (Huon pine) regenerates intermittently in response to canopy disturbance. Its ability to resprout rapidly from fallen trees is likely to be important in the continued dominance of gaps by this species in competition with faster-growing tree species. The largely riverine distribution pattern of this species is best explained by rapid vegetative spread down river systems and slow dispersal into canopy gaps away from river edges. The probability of recurrent disturbance within the lifespan of this species is high, implying that competitive exclusion of Huon pine is unlikely once it establishes at a site.  相似文献

Bostrychia tenuissima King and Puttock is restricted to southern Australia and New Zealand. Previous studies in Australia have revealed two distinct patterns in the presence of osmotically active polyols. Southern populations only have D-sorbitol whereas northern populations have both D-sorbitol and D-dulcitol. These polyol patterns lead to speculation on the ecotypic differentiation of these two population types. Using single-stranded confirmation polymorphism to rapidly score plastid haplotypes, plus DNA sequencing, a 100% congruence was found between polyol patterns and plastid haplotype. Analysis of 33 B. tenuissima isolates shows that the plastid relationships closely follow biogeo-graphic regions, with south-eastern Australia (southern NSW and Victoria) and South Australia and Tasmania having one haplotype and central and northern NSW having two alternate haplotypes. There is an overlap at the haplotype boundary just south of Sydney, New South Wales.  相似文献

Abstract. To evaluate the respective contributions of habitat, fire regime and colonization-extinction processes to the distribution of northern Pinus species, we investigated the distribution of P. banksiana (jack pine), P. resinosa (red pine) and P. strobus (white pine) on 117 islands of Lake Duparquet in northwestern Québec. Stepwise logistic regressions indicated that the extent of xeric areas on the islands was the sole factor predicting jack pine distribution. The distribution of white pine was predicted primarily by the combined effects of distance to the shoreline and elevation, with a smaller effect of area of xeric habitat. The distribution of red pine was predicted by other populations of red pine nearby, with a slightly smaller effect of the combined effects of distance to shoreline and elevation. None of the species completely saturates all available islands nor is any restricted to specific, very exposed aspects. The results suggest that pine is more frequent on islands with characteristics that promote lightning strikes and thus higher fire occurrence. However, absence of pine in several islands may not be explained by abiotic characteristics or recent fire history. The presence of very small populations, together with low invasion potential, suggests that the observed distribution is mainly driven by the process of random extinction. A disequilibrium between present and past fire regimes may explain why northern pines have discontinuous distributions inside their range limits.  相似文献

The Grove of Giants in the Huon Valley of Tasmania, Australia is renowned for its large trees. A team of tree climbers and citizen scientists undertook a carbon assessment of a 2 hectare plot within the Grove of Giants. The largest 16 trees in the plot (>2.5 m DBH) were measured by tree climbers allowing for accurate estimation of tree volume. Understory trees, coarse woody debris, root biomass and soil carbon were also estimated, making this study the most comprehensive assessment of forest carbon in Tasmania. Total forest carbon was estimated to be 1312 tonnes per hectare. Large trees had the highest carbon stocks, accounting for 44% of the total store. Coarse woody debris represented 19% of the forest's carbon, root biomass was 14%, while the understory trees accounted for 12% and soil carbon for 11%. This is the highest carbon stock recorded in Tasmania and is above the average estimates for temperate forest ecosystems in other parts of the world. Protecting Tasmania's forests, especially mature wet Eucalypt forests, is important to avoid potential greenhouse gas emissions and ensure safe storage of the carbon in the land sector.  相似文献

The requirement for selenium (IV) was assessed in five strainsof the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, representingthree populations from Tasmania (Australia), as well as oneeach from Japan and Spain. Strains were grown in nutrient-enrichedsea water medium with 10–9 M selenium added as selenite(H2SeO3), or with no added selenium, and monitored for growthand cell yield. Strains exhibited different selenium (Se) requirements,as evidenced by (i) a decrease in exponential growth rate (10–20%)and cell yield (up to 80%) (Japanese strain); (ii) a decreasein cell yield only (Tasmania Derwent Estuary 1987, TasmaniaHuon Estuary and Spanish strains); and (iii) no decrease ingrowth or cell yield (Tasmania Derwent Estuary 1993 strain).Variation in the response to Se deficiency was greatest betweenthe two strains isolated from the Derwent Estuary, Tasmania,in different years (1987 and 1993) and less between Tasmanianstrains from different localities (Huon and Derwent Estuariesare 50 km apart) or between Tasmanian and Japanese or Spanishstrains. Strain variability in micro-nutrient responses suchas described here may provide a partial explanation for differentbloom patterns exhibited by the same dinoflagellate taxon underapparently similar environmental conditions.  相似文献

The plant intermediate wintergreen (Pyrola media, Ericaceae) is in need of conservation action in Scotland. Although widespread, it is locally distributed in dwarf shrub heath and more commonly in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) woodlands. A recent study on the mycorrhizal status of Pyrola suggested that they associate with a restricted range of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi. Here, we examined the hypothesis that specialisation by P. media for fungi usually associated with Scots pine is a factor in promoting its occurrence in this habitat. The fungal community associated with the roots of P. media growing in a Scots pine forest was determined by morphotyping, polymerase chain reaction, cloning and sequencing. Molecular identification found 49 taxa representing ecto- and ericoid mycorrhizal fungi, dark septate endophytes, saprotrophs, and fungi of unknown trophic status. The majority of the taxa (67.4%) were Basidiomycota, with 24.4% known to be ECM fungi specific to Pinus sp. or conifers. However, a wide range of other mycorrhizal fungi with varying degrees of host specificity were also found, including taxa usually associated with deciduous hosts. In conclusion, the broad range of mycorrhizal fungi recovered from the roots of P. media suggests that specialization is not a major factor in determining its distribution.  相似文献

Standard correlation approaches in dendroclimatology provide limited scope to elucidate differences between years in timing of growth initiation and cessation. In the Southern Hemisphere (SH), with relatively few long-term climate reconstructions, a clearer understanding of signals contained in ring width variation is of particular importance. In this study, we monitored growth in detail at two sites (low and high altitude) in Lagarostrobos franklinii (Huon pine) for five growing seasons. In concert, local environmental data were recorded, and cambial samples taken on several occasions. Season duration in Huon pine at low altitude lasted about six months, generally starting in September/October and ending in April. At higher altitude, season duration did not exceed about four months and generally started during November, ending in March. The shortest season and smallest rings were linked to cooler conditions compared to other years. On the other hand, an earlier growth onset in the 2011 growing season was evidently brought on by unusually warm conditions in late winter. Growth onset was linked to a running mean temperature of about 8.5 °C and 6.5 °C at the lower and higher altitude sites, respectively. While effects of limiting water on growth cessation were not universally clear, our results suggest that limiting water (during hotter, drier summers) may reduce growth rates, and precipitate earlier growth cessation.  相似文献

Few studies have been conducted on Stone pine (Pinus pinea) morphology, cone to kernel yield (KY) and composition. To study the species variability, a morphometric and chemical characterization of pine nuts was performed across the species distribution in Chile. Seventy-six highly productive trees were selected in three macrozones. Ten cones per tree were harvested, and cone weight, in-shell pine nut number cone?1 and size and weight of in-shell pine nuts and kernels were measured; KY was determined. Chemical and nutritional characterization of pine nuts was performed in 38 trees. Differences among macrozones were tested with mixed linear models. Partial correlation was used to test for correlation between cone and pine nut morphometric data, chemical features, and climate. Canonical correlation coefficients between groups were tested. Selected trees differed in cone and in-shell pine nut size, kernel morphometry, and KY, with lowest trait values being generally found in the coast. KY was higher than in Europe. Chemical composition was similar to values reported in producer countries, homogeneous among macrozones, with the exception of oleic acid and potassium. Detected differences would respond to the environment and to the interaction genotype?×?environment given the restricted origins of the genetic material, confirming the species adaptability.  相似文献

The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus laniarius), a medium‐sized predator/scavenger, is the largest member of the short‐lived carnivorous marsupial Family Dasyuridae. Now restricted to Tasmania, populations are impacted by habitat clearance and anthropogenic mortality and genetic studies could be of value in informing levels of genetic diversity, mating system, dispersal and the effects of natural and anthropogenic landscape features on gene flow. Microsatellite markers were isolated from a partial, size‐selected genomic library that was enriched for microsatellite sequences. Primer pairs were developed for 11 polymorphic dinucleotide microsatellite loci that conform with Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and reveal moderate genetic variability across the species range.  相似文献

Summary NADPH : protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (pchlide reductase, EC 1.6.99.1) catalyzes the light-dependent reduction of protochlorophyllide in higher plants. Cloned cDNAs encoding two distinct pchlide reductases were isolated from a gt11 library constructed from poly(A)+ RNA prepared from the cotyledons of dark-grown white pine (Pines strobes) seedlings and a nuclear gene (lpcr) analogous to one of these cDNAs has been characterized from loblolly pine (P. taeda). The pine gene encodes an approximately 43 kDa precursor polypeptide consisting of a 334-amino acid mature protein and a 66-amino acid transit peptide. The deduced primary structures for the pine proteins are highly homologous to those reported from monocots and dicots. The coding portion of the pine lpcr gene is interrupted by four introns. The placement of these introns within the pine lpcr gene is identical to that observed in pea (Pisum sativum), suggesting conservation in gene organization between dicot and gymnosperm species. Western blot analysis using polyclonal antiserum against oat pchlide reductase detected in extracts of dark-grown pine cotyledons a single immunoreactive protein, which declined in abundance during a 48 h period of illumination with white light. Cotyledons of dark-grown seedlings were also found to accumulate high levels of pchlide reductase mRNA; however, little or no change in the steady-state levels of mRNA encoding pchlide reductase was observed in these tissues following illumination. Stem tissue of dark-grown seedlings did not contain significant levels of pchlide reductase mRNA, whereas stems of light-grown plants of the same age accumulated substantial amounts of the message. These results suggest that light and the developmental age of the tissue affect regulation of lpcr expression in pine.  相似文献

The ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria sp. A is restricted to temperate rainforest of southeast Australia, associated with its host tree Nothofagus cunninghamii. Eight mitochondrial microsatellite markers were used to investigate the population genetic structure of L. sp. A across its distribution in Tasmania and Victoria. The highest allelic diversity was found in Tasmania, which appeared to contain a panmictic population, whereas the more fragmented Victorian populations were characterized by low allelic diversity and differentiation between east and west. There is evidence of glacial refugia in the west and the northeast of Tasmania, and in Victoria in the Otway Ranges and Central Highlands, with postglacial migration into the Strzelecki Ranges. Narrow host-specificity may have contributed to the presence of population structure in this fungus. Allelic diversity patterns in L. sp. A are largely congruent with diversity patterns already established in populations of its host, N. cunninghamii.  相似文献

The effect of habitat components (vegetation density at two levels, litter, logs and roads) on the distribution of small mammals was assessed in adjacent areas of native forest and Pinus taeda plantation in north-eastern New South Wales. Rattus fuscipes was associated with structural complexity in native forest but not in pine plantation where it was found on downslope areas. R. rattus was associated with windrows in the pine plantation, R. lutreolus with areas devoid of a shrub layer in the pine plantation, Antechinus stuartii with logs and Melomys cervinipes with habitat components associated with rainforest areas. Road crossing by small mammals was inversely related to road width; roads severely restricted or stopped the movement of small mammals even when the road consisted of a long-unused and partly overgrown track.  相似文献

Abstract: The pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda, is causing substantial tree mortality to Pinus yunnanensis in south‐western China, whereas the same species in Europe seldom kills Pinus sylvestris. In order to understand this difference in aggressiveness, we studied the shoot feeding ecology of the pine shoot beetles in Yunnan, and compared it with European results. We found many similarities in the shoot feeding behaviour of T. piniperda, and also that of Tomicus minor, which was common locally. In contrast to Europe, however, the pine shoot beetles in Yunnan seem to be able to predispose the host trees for stem attack by intensive shoot‐feeding. It has also been observed that beetles aggregate in certain trees during shoot feeding, but we could not verify that in our experiment.  相似文献

1 Predation and parasitism on litter‐buried cocoons of the common pine sawfly Diprion pini (L.) were compared in different forest types with endemic sawfly populations by field exposure of laboratory‐reared cocoons during three consecutive years (1993–1995). 2 The impact of cocoon predation was dependent on season and forest type. The highest predation (up to 95%) was found during autumn in forest stands with a dense understory vegetation. 3 Cocoon parasitism varied between year, season and forest type. The highest parasitoid attack was observed in pure pine forests with more or less barren soils, but did not exceed 24% of exposed cocoons. 4 Cocoons were exposed in small patches. Predators tended to exploit all cocoons of a patch, whereas parasitoids only attacked a few cocoons of a patch. Predation was similar on cocoons placed in the litter and those buried more deeply in the soil, whereas parasitism of soil‐buried cocoons was rare. 5 These results indicate that predators can have a remarkable potential for limiting endemic sawfly densities, if habitat conditions in a forest maintain their population and support their foraging behaviour. A notable effect of parasitoids on sawfly cocoons deposited in the litter is obviously restricted to typical pure and barren pine forests, but may play there a similar role as predation.  相似文献

We studied phylogenetic relationships among populations and species in the California closed-cone pines (Pinus radiata D. Don, P. attenuata Lemm., and P. muricata D. Don) via chloroplast DNA restriction site analysis. Data on genetic polymorphism within and among 19 populations in the three species were collected using9 to 20 restriction enzymes and 38 to 384 trees. Because only five clades and extremely low intraclade diversity were found, additional phylogenetic data were collected using a single representative per clade and two outgroup species, P. oocarpa Schiede and P. jeffreyi Loud. In total, 25 restriction enzymes were employed and approximately 2.7 kb surveyed (2.3% of genome). The five clades recognized were Monterey pine, knob-cone pine, and the southern, intermediate, and northern races of bishop pine. On the basis of bootstrapping, both Wagner and Dollo parsimony analyses strongly separated the northern and intermediate races of bishop pine from the southern race; knobcone pine from Monterey and bishop pines; and the closed-cone pines from the two outgroups. Approximate divergence times were estimated for the lineages leading to knob-cone pine and to the intermediate and northern populations of bishop pine. The position of Monterey pine relative to bishop pine within their monophyletic clade was unresolved. Surprisingly, Montery pine and the southern race of bishop pine were much more similar to one another than was the southern race of bishop pine to its conspecific intermediate and northern races. Both the Monterey and southern bishop pine lineages also evolved severalfold more slowly than did the knobcone pine and intermediate-northern bishop pine lineages. These results differ significantly from a recent allozyme study, corroborating previous observations that chloroplast genome phylogeny can depart substantially from that of nuclear genes.  相似文献

Seventy-eight polymorphic cpDNA (chloroplast DNA) characters were found in 13 closely related taxa from Eucalyptus series Amygdalinae (subgenus Monocalyptus) and seven potential outgroup taxa. The strict consensus of six cladograms generated from cpDNA data confirmed monophyly of Monocalyptus. However, cpDNA phylogeny within Monocalyptus was incongruent with taxonomic classification, being more related to geography, even when accessions were from divergent series. Monocalyptus cpDNA formed two major clades. On the island of Tasmania cpDNA was restricted to a single clade, exhibited very little variation, and was phylogenetically related to cpDNA found in central and western Victoria. In contrast, cpDNA of mainland monocalypt taxa was more variable, even within the Amygdalinae. Four out of six Tasmanian Amygdalinae species were polymorphic. The difference between cpDNA of replicates was often greater than differences between species from different series. The low level of cpDNA variation and extensive morphological intergradation between the Tasmanian endemics suggest recent speciation. However, the transfer of cpDNA through hybridization between lineages is the most likely explanation for the observed sharing of cpDNA across series. This study highlights that the geographical pattern to cpDNA variation in Eucalyptus may be an important source of information on past plant distributions in Australia.  相似文献

Ipomoea microdactyla Griseb. (Convolvulaceae) is restricted to the Bahamian archipelago, Cuba, and southeastern Florida. The species is listed as a state endangered species in Florida, where it is mostly restricted to the hyperfragmented pine rockland of Miami‐Dade County. Using seven DNA microsatellite loci, we assessed levels of genetic diversity for 12 populations of this species from Andros Island in the Bahamas (six sites), Cuba (one site), and Florida (five sites). We found significantly greater mean numbers of alleles, and higher mean values for both observed and expected heterozygosity in populations from the continuous forest on Andros than those from the habitat fragments in Florida. It is unknown if these patterns of genetic diversity in the Florida populations are the result of habitat fragmentation or founder effects. The population from Cuba exhibited relatively high levels of genetic variation, suggesting that this island is a major center of diversity and dispersal for this species. It appears that hybrid introgression for I. carolina alleles within I. microdactyla individuals occurred at a single site on Andros Island. Overall, the mean inbreeding coefficient value was 0.089, suggesting low levels of inbreeding. The highest inbreeding coefficient values were mostly recorded in Florida. Two groups were revealed, one containing the populations from Florida, and the second one encompassing those from the Bahamas and Cuba. Our results highlight the negative genetic consequences of habitat fragmentation and support initiatives recently established to establish corridors to connect the remnants of the pine forest of the Miami‐Dade County.  相似文献

Inferring the evolutionary and ecological processes that have shaped contemporary species distributions using the geographic distribution of gene lineages is the principal goal of phylogeographic research. Researchers in the field have recognized that inferences made from a single gene, often mitochondrial, can be informative regarding the pattern of diversification but lack conclusive information regarding the evolutionary mechanisms that led to the observed patterns. Here, we use a multilocus (20 loci) data set to explore the evolutionary history of the White‐breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis). A previous single‐locus study found S. carolinensis is comprised of four reciprocally monophyletic clades geographically restricted to the pine and oak forests of: (i) eastern North America, (ii) southern Rocky Mountain and Mexican Mountain ranges, (iii) Eastern Sierra Nevada and Northern Rocky Mountains and (iv) Pacific slope of North America. The diversification of the clades was attributed to the fragmentation of North American pine and oak woodlands in the Pliocene with subsequent divergences owing to the Pleistocene glacial cycles. Principal component, clustering and species tree analyses of the multilocus data resolved the same four groups or lineages found in the single‐locus study. Coalescent analyses and hypothesis testing of nested isolation and migration models indicate that isolation and not gene flow has been the major evolutionary mechanism responsible for shaping genetic variation, and all the divergence events within S. carolinensis have occurred in response to the Pleistocene glacial cycles.  相似文献

Sericothrips staphylinus was released as a biological control agent for Ulex europaeus in New Zealand and Hawaii following tests on ca. 80 plant species which showed it was narrowly oligophagous. To determine the suitability of S. staphylinus for release in Australia, further host specificity tests were conducted on 38 species and cultivars of Australian plants. These tests confirmed that S. staphylinus would feed only on U. europaeus in Australia and, following formal approval, was released in Tasmania during January 2001. To develop an optimal release strategy for S. staphylinus under Australian conditions, a field trial based on an earlier New Zealand study was conducted by replicating releases of 10, 30, 90, 270 and 810 adults. Results showed that population growth, reproduction rate and the number of S. staphylinus recovered 14 months after release can be non-linear functions of release size and establishment could be achieved with as few as 10 thrips. As S. staphylinus is easily cultured ca. 250 thrips were chosen as the minimum number for release because, based on a negative binomial model, this release size produced close to the maximum population growth. Surveys in early 2007 recovered S. staphylinus from 80% of 30 sites in Tasmania, the post release period ranging from 1 to 6 years. However, densities were low (<1 thrips/cm of tip growth) with no evidence of visible plant damage. The maximum dispersal range was 180–250 m after 38 months. At all the other sites, dispersal was estimated at less than 120 m. It is possible that S. staphylinus populations are still in the lag phase of their establishment before starting to increase rapidly and disperse. However, the survey results support a recent Tasmanian study which indicated that S. staphylinus is a sedentary, latent species characterised by steady densities and low levels of damage to its host plant. Its efficacy as a biological control agent on gorse may be restricted primarily by ‘bottom up’ effects of plant quality limiting its rate of natural increase and an inability of the thrips to reach large, damaging populations under field conditions.  相似文献

Marchalina hellenica (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Margarodidae) is a scale insect, endemic in pine (Pinus halepensis) forests of Greece and other Mediterranean countries, which plays a major role in the production of honeydew honey. We investigated the morphological and the biological characteristics of M. hellenica in the pine forests of Mt. Parnis in comparison with those in the high-altitude fir (Abies cephalonica) forest of Mt. Helmos where it has been recently established, after anthropogenic intervention. Morphologically, the final body size of the 1st instar and the adult stages of M. hellenica in the fir forest were equal to those in the pine forest. Biologically, in the fir forest, the insect exhibited a long 1st instar’s period, which was the stage of its overwintering. In the pine forest, the 1st instar period was short and the insect overwinters in the stage of 2nd instar. The number of eggs per female in the fir forest was quite low (25–145) compared with the number of eggs in the pine forest (200–300). Concerning the qualitative parameters of the resulting honeydew-honey, statistically significant differences were found in Diastase and HMF (p < 0.0001). No difference was found in sucrose, fructose + glucose and water content, neither to electrical conductivity and total acidity. All values were within the EU limits (EU Directive 2001).  相似文献
