1. Rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus were exposed to endosulfan and diazinon to determine the effect on nitration and ingestion rates.2. The experiments were carried out with the algae Nannochloris oculata in a density of 5 × 105 cell/ml.3. Rates of filtration and ingestion were decreased significantly at sublethal concentrations of pesticide tested after 5 hr exposure.4. The toxicity of three common antibiotics (streptomycin sulfate, tetracycline hydrochloride, and tylosin tartrate) to the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus and brackish-water rotifer B. plicatilis was investigated using full-lifespan exposure durations. Effects of each antibiotic on lifespan, lifetime reproduction, and Malthusian parameter were assessed at seven nominal concentrations (ranging from 5.6 mg l−1 to 2,000 mg l−1) and a negative control. Lowest Observed Effect Concentrations (LOECs) were determined for reproduction and lifespan, while 1%, 10%, 25%, and 50% Inhibitory Concentrations (IC1, IC10, IC25, IC50) and 95% confidence intervals were estimated for all three endpoints. LOECs ranged from 5.6 mg l−1 to 90 mg l−1, with all LOECs less than 90 mg l−1 occurring in B. calyciflorus. The lowest IC1 concentrations were 3.91 mg l−1 for the effect of tetracycline on lifetime reproduction in B. calyciflorus and 4.06 mg l−1 for the effect of tylosin on lifetime reproduction in B. plicatilis. Overall, lifetime reproduction was the most sensitive endpoint and the Malthusian parameter was the least sensitive. Cerenkov radiation was used to measure ingestion and release by Brachionus calyciflorus and Daphnia pulex that were fed 32P-labeled Rhodotorula glutinus. A method is described that uses automatic pipet tips as cages, permitting measurement of ingestion rates and isotope loss by individual animals. Estimated gut renewal times were 16 min for B. calyciflorus and 25–28 min for D. pulex. Filtering and ingestion rates for both animals agree closely with previous estimates. B. calyciflorus release 32P at high rates in several pulses of short duration. Heavy metals are widely recognized as potential toxic agents to zooplankton, yet experiments are usually performed with a continuous exposure to the metal being analyzed. Here we describe experiments that examined the influence of pulsed exposure of the heavy metals copper and cadmium to a parthenogenetic population of the planktonic rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. Our protocol called for exposure durations of 3, 6, 12, and 24 h to either copper (as CuSO4) at concentrations of 0.0375, 0.075, 0.15 mg l−1 or cadmium (as CdCl2) at concentration of 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 mg l−1. Control animals were treated in similar ways but did not receive exposure to heavy metals. Four end points were used to evaluate the outcome of exposure: population growth (r), body size, egg ratio, and egg hatching percent. Increase in heavy metal concentration and exposure time had an adverse influence on the population growth of B. calyciflorus. However, while the response of B. calyciflorus was similar for both heavy metals, the magnitude of the impact of cadmium was more severe. Population growth varied depending on which heavy metal was tested, as well as its concentration and the duration of exposure (r = 0.11–0.28 day−1). There was a significant reduction in lorica size of B. calyciflorus subjected to different exposure times and concentrations of both Cd and Cu. Egg ratios were inversely related to population density in controls and in treatments involving Cu, but not for Cd. While nearly 100% of eggs hatched in the control treatments, egg hatching in experimental treatments containing Cu, were reduced (range = 16–41%) depending on the exposure time and the concentration. Due to their surface characteristics, nanosized titanium dioxide particles (nTiO2) tend to adhere to biological surfaces and we thus hypothesize that they may alter the swimming performance and behavior of motile aquatic organisms. However, no suitable approaches to address these impairments in swimming behavior as a result of nanoparticle exposure are available. Water fleas Daphnia magna exposed to 5 and 20 mg/L nTiO2 (61 nm; polydispersity index: 0.157 in 17.46 mg/L stock suspension) for 96 h showed a significantly (p<0.05) reduced growth rate compared to a 1-mg/L treatment and the control. Using three-dimensional video observations of swimming trajectories, we observed a treatment-dependent swarming of D. magna in the center of the test vessels during the initial phase of the exposure period. Ensemble mean swimming velocities increased with increasing body length of D. magna, but were significantly reduced in comparison to the control in all treatments after 96 h of exposure. Spectral analysis of swimming velocities revealed that high-frequency variance, which we consider as a measure of swimming activity, was significantly reduced in the 5- and 20-mg/L treatments. The results highlight the potential of detailed swimming analysis of D. magna for the evaluation of sub-lethal mechanical stress mechanisms resulting from biological surface coating and thus for evaluating the effects of nanoparticles in the aquatic environment.  相似文献

A number of risk assessments of the adverse effects of Cu and its compounds have been conducted since it is one of the leading substances responsible for water contamination. However, with the exception of standard organisms, ecotoxicological knowledge is still scarce. Here, we examined the influence of Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations on acute toxicity of Cu toward a cladoceran, Daphnia galeata Sars. We found that the protective effects of Ca2+ against copper toxicity were larger than those of Mg2+. BLM parameters (log Ks) for Ca and Mg estimated based on our 48-h LC50 (50 % lethal concentration), respectively, were 3.14 and 2.29. The log K of Ca was similar to that reported in previous studies using Daphnia magna; however, the log K of Mg was lower by one order of magnitude. Our results suggest that there is some mechanistic difference related to the Mg uptake between D. magna and D. galeata. The results obtained from the present study will contribute to the water quality criteria of copper in soft water because D. galeata is a widespread (distributed in Eurasia and North America) and common species, even in soft water lakes.  相似文献

1. Laboratory experiments were used to study the feeding, growth and reproduction of five daphnids in mixtures of a toxic cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, and a green alga, Scenedesmus acutus. The mixtures included 0%, 20%, 50%, 80% and 100% Microcystis with a total food concentration of 0.5 mg C L??1 in each treatment. The feeding rate was measured after 1 and 24 h of acclimatization to the mixtures. 2. Toxic Microcystis inhibited feeding in all the species, but they exhibited an unexpected diversity and complexity in the pattern of feeding inhibition. Daphnia magna exhibited the strongest inhibition of feeding after 1 h of exposure to toxic food, but had substantially recovered after 24 h in the same mixtures. This pattern of inhibition and recovery may balance the benefits of reduced ingestion of toxin with the disadvantage of a reduced energy intake. 3. All five daphnids grew quickly in the Scenedesmus control, whereas growth and reproduction declined with an increasing proportion of the toxic alga in the diet. Daphnia pulicaria showed the least inhibition of growth and reproduction, D. pulex showed the strongest inhibition and the three remaining species exhibited intermediate sensitivity. 4. Estimates of gross growth efficiency (GGE; growth/ingestion) provided a means for discriminating between the effects of feeding inhibition and direct toxicity on zooplankton growth. Daphnia pulex exhibited a sharp decline in GGE, suggesting that growth inhibition was a result of both feeding inhibition and direct toxicity. In contrast, D. magna exhibited a nearly constant GGE, indicating that feeding inhibition accounted for its decline in growth. However, two Daphnia species (i.e. D. pulicaria and D. galeata) exhibited improbable increases in GGE with toxic cyanobacteria, suggesting that their feeding rates were underestimated. Growth assays with sensitive and resistant zooplankton species are proposed for testing the potential impacts toxic cyanobacteria in lakes.  相似文献

To evaluate the potential of Branchinella kugenumaensis for cyanobacterial bloom control relative to Daphnia, we conducted several feeding experiments on microcystin-free and microcystin-containing unicellular strains of Microcystis aeruginosa and colonial forms of Microcystis using B. kugenumaensis and Daphnia magna in a laboratory. Branchinella kugenumaensis showed higher filtration rates than those of D. magna in all treatments. In particular, the microcystin-containing unicellular strain supported the highest filtration rates of B. kugenumaensis among treatments. Daphnia magna reduced colonies less than 75 μm in length, whereas B. kugenumaensis could graze colonies less than 100 μm. The middle-sized group of B. kugenumaensis had a higher filtration rate than the small and large sized groups in a continuous feeding experiment for 4 days. In survival experiments, survivorships were not different between the two species, whereas ages at the beginning of the experiments affected their survival time. Our results showed that B. kugenumaensis grazed on toxic and colonial cyanobacteria at relatively high rates, indicating that locally abundant grazers like Branchinella may offer a better potential for bloom control than Daphnia.  相似文献

Food concentration supplied during subchronic and chronic toxicity tests, is one of the most important factors that might influence the response of test organisms to toxicants. The green microalga Scenedesmus incrassatulus was used as food for the cladoceran Daphnia magna, in a chronic toxicity test with the toxicant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Test concentrations were 0.625, 1.25, and 2.5 mg l-1 of SDS, equivalent to 1/40, 1/20, and 1/10 of the average 48-h LC50 previously determined. Food concentrations were 9.5, 19, and 38 mg l-1 (dry wt.). Survival and reproduction were recorded, and the data were analyzed using a life-table approach. After 55 days, the main findings were as follows:
1.  Average clutch size decreased as food concentration increased and there was a negative interaction between the toxicant and the algal concentration.
2.  The Net Reproductive Rate (R 0) of the controls fed the lowest food concentration was approximately 10 times higher than the controls fed the highest food concentration.
3.  R 0's for the treatments with SDS fed the lowest food concentration, were 2.5 to 5 times higher than those fed the highest food concentration.
4.  Reproduction in controls and treatments with the same SDS concentrations, became similar as food level increased.
According to these results, the food concentration to be supplied in chronic toxicity tests should be accurate, as an incorrect food concentration might negatively affect the survival and reproduction of test organisms, thus masking or confounding the effects of the toxicant being examined. A concentration around 10 mg l-1 (dry wt.) of S. incrassatulus seems to be appropriate for D. magna economic toxicity tests.  相似文献

Investigation was made to compare some biological characteristics relevant to ecotoxicity testing among six cladoceran species, including Daphnia magna, Daphnia carinata, Daphnia pulex, Ceriodaphnia quadrangular, Bosmina longirostris, and Simocephalus vetulus. The results show that D. carinata had advantages over other cladoceran species for being used as a test organism, particularly for ecotoxicological assessment of aquatic environments in tropical and subtropical areas. D. carinata had similar body size and total number of offspring per female to D. magna. However, D. carinata was more sensitive to the reference toxicant and had much shorter reproduction cycle than D. magna. D. carinata had similarity to D. pulex, C. quadrangular, S. vetulus and B. longirostris in terms of sensitivity to the reference toxicant and length of reproduction cycle. However, D. carinata was much larger in size and produced much more offspring per female than any of D. pulex, C. quadrangular, S. vetulus and B. longirostris. Among the investigated cladocerans, only the neonates (2- and 4-day-old) of D. carinata exhibited phototaxis that was sufficiently remarkable. The low among-generation variation in phototaxis index (Ip) of D. carinata and the close relationship between Ip and the concentration of the ISO standard toxicant (K2Cr2O7) appears to suggest that Ip can be used as an excellent test endpoint for ecotoxicity testing.  相似文献

We studied the occurrence of colony formation within 40 different strains of Scenedesmaceae (Chlorococcales, Chlorophyta) in response to grazing‐released infochemicals from the herbivorous zooplankters Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas (Rotifera) and Daphnia magna Strauss (Cladocera). With the exception of two strains, all strains showed similar responses to both B. calyciflorus and D. magna infochemicals, either no response or inducible colony formation. Colony size was found to increase with B. calyciflorus infochemical concentration and could be described by a sigmoid function. The increase in colony size was more pronounced in the Scenedesmus species tested than in Desmodesmus species, which was probably due to higher threshold infochemical concentrations for colony induction in Desmodesmus. Therefore, the adaptivity of colony formation to the herbivory threat only holds above the threshold concentration for colony induction and as long as maximum colony size has not been attained. Taking this into account, our results suggest that inducible colony formation is a common adaptive response of many Scenedesmaceae to the threat of herbivory.  相似文献

为了更好的了解化学干扰对轮虫种间竞争的影响,分别用萼花臂尾轮虫(Brachionus calyciflorus)和角突臂尾轮虫(Brachionus angularis)研究了同种和异种种群密度信号对种群增长的影响。结果表明,密度信号对轮虫种群增长具有一定的影响。萼花臂尾轮虫的密度信号显著降低了本种和角突臂尾轮虫种群的环境容纳量K并提高了它们的种群增长率r(P0.05),角突臂尾轮虫的密度信号对本种和萼花臂尾轮虫的种群增长都没有显著影响(P0.05)。萼花臂尾轮虫种群增长受同种密度信号抑制十分显著,环境容纳量K降低了50%以上,可能主要受自毒作用的调节,但同种密度信号对高有性生殖的萼花臂尾轮虫种群的混交率影响不明显。角突臂尾轮虫几乎不受自身密度信号的影响。因此,在两种臂尾轮虫的竞争中,由于自身密度信号的抑制作用,萼花臂尾轮虫将更快被角突臂尾轮虫排除。据此可推测密度信号对轮虫的种间竞争具有重要影响。  相似文献

The effects of some ecotoxical model substances on the activity of frontal gill cilia of freshwater mussel Anodonta cygnea were studied in 1 and 24 hr experiments with the particle transport method. The effects were compared with the results of standard Daphnia magna ec50 tests with the same substances.2. Variations of pH between 4.8 and 8.1 affected the ciliary activity by less than 30%.3. Ciliary activity was less sensitive to heavy metal salts, sodium lauryl sulphate and to two pulp industry waste model substances than D. magna.4. Compared to D. magna, the ciliary activity was more sensitive to formalin and 2,4-dinitrophenol, and as sensitive to ethanol.5. Ciliary activity in bivalve gills is a well regulated and/or a relative insensitive function, but it may be used as a rapid screening test for some cell ecotoxicals.  相似文献

Brachionus calyciflorus is able to differentially capture or deflect potential food cells depending on the overall density (numbers µl–1) and size of suspended particles the rotifer encounters while feeding. This has been shown to correlate with behavioral regulation of pseudotrochal structures, and primarily by large medial tufts of compound cilia (cirri). When pseudotrochal cirri are extended laterally, inferred fluid flow pathlines show that only cells in the central 25 µm of the coronal disk are subject to ingestion. When pseudotrochal cirri form medially-oriented screens, fluid flow is directed away from the pseudotrochas and central corona, an effect apparent up to 70 µm in front of a restrained animal. Fluid flow in all areas of the B. calyciflorus corona is at very low Reynolds Number (Re), with calculated values always less than 10–1. Accordingly, removal of cells from feeding currents probably is not due to sieving but is more likely due to direct interception of particles by individual ciliary elements. Certain large cells — such as Euglena gracilis — are retained in the inner pseudotrochal space for up to 500 msec, ample time for B. calyciflorus to assess the physical and chemical characteristics of this or other potential foods.  相似文献

Respiration data for different stages of Brachionus calyciflorus, fed with three concentrations of Kirchneriella lunaris at 20°C, are presented. Increasing oxygen consumption from 4.1 to 4.6 .10–3 µl/h × ind. with food decreasing from 5.106 to 106 and 4.105 cells/ml has been fourid for adult females with one egg, but other age groups showed divergent results. Based on the respiration data for age groups o to 12 and 12 to 24 h old and some other results and calculations-e.g. dry weight and caloric content of eggs and females, ingestion rates/h for the different concentrations of food-energy budgets for juvenile, growing B. calyciflorus are presented.  相似文献

The effects of chronic exposure of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to the toxicants lindane and 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), were evaluated. The parameters used to determine the toxicity on these compounds were the age-specific and fertility, and the demographic parameters: intrinsic rate of natural increase (r), generation time (T), net reproductive rate (R o), reproductive value (V x) and life expectancy (e o). All the demographic parameters studied decreased with increasing toxicant concentrations. The use of life tables techniques with B. calyciflorus as a test method for the determination of chronic toxicity of xenobiotics is discussed.  相似文献

We studied the feeding behaviour during the larval stages (from hatching until 8 weeks) of the Mexican blind fish Astyanax fasciatus, black tetra Gymnocorymbus ternetzi and angel fish Pterophyllum scalare using four zooplankton species (two rotifers: Brachionus calyciflorus and B. patulus and two cladocerans: Daphnia pulex and Moina macrocopa). Components of feeding behaviour (numbers of encounters, attacks, captures, ingestions, rejections and escapes) were quantified for 10 min observation periods per larvae. Data on the increase of the body length and mouth size of the three fish species during this period were also collected. When B. calyciflorus was used as prey, P. scalare showed higher capture and ingestion rates than A. fasciatus or G. ternetzi. With reference to age, B. calyciflorus was more frequently attacked, captured and ingested by G. ternetzi and P. scalare than A. fasciatus from the first to the 8th week. When offered B. patulus as prey, larvae of the three fish species showed increased consumption of B. patulus with time. A. fasciatus sometimes rejected B. patulus which could also escape after being captured. A. fasciatus began to attack and ingest Daphnia pulex and Moina macrocopa from the first week onwards while, G. ternetzi could neither capture nor ingest cladocerans until the fifth week. P. scalare began to ingest M. macrocopa and D. pulex from the third week onwards. These results are discussed with reference to the non-functional eyes of larval A. fasciatus.  相似文献

Summary The laboratory feeding behavior of Brachionus calyciflorus varies depending upon the type of food cell available in suspension. When feeding on the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis, rotifers show a continuous increase in ingestion with increased cell density between 0.01 and 1000 g dry weight ml-1. Effective clearance rates drop from ca. 50 l animal-1 h-1 to less than 0.5 l animal-1 h-1 over this food density range. When feeding on Englena gracilis, B. calyciflorus ingestion rates are constant between 1.0 and 100 g ml-1 of available food, averaging close to 25 ng animal-1 h-1. The decrease in clearance rate is more striking than with R. glutinis, dropping from 45 l animal-1 h-1 at 0.1 g ml-1 to 0.13 l animal-1 h-1 at 100 g ml-1. Differences between the patterns obtained with the two food types indicate fundamental dissimilarities in the feeding behavior of this rotifer species when presented with these different foods.  相似文献

The effect of ingestion of Nosema locustae Canning spores on feeding by grasshoppers was measured in simultaneous laboratory and field experiments. After 21 days, fourth-instar Melanoplus sanguinipes (F.) nymphs, administered spores at the rates of 0, 2.0 × 104, 2.0 × 105, and 2.0 × 106 per grasshopper, showed dry matter consumption of 102, 87, 64, and 26 mg in 48 hr, respectively. Rate of inoculation was a significant factor in suppression of feeding after correction for the effects of developmental stage, sex, and body weight. The quantity of dry matter consumed decreased linearly with increasing rate of spore ingestion. Experiments on 50 caged 1-m2 plots on pasture grass yielded similar trends in per capita consumption independent of the effects of mortality. Field consumption per integrated grasshopper-day was 108, 77, 31, and 27 mg dry wt at the four inoculation rates, over 20 days.  相似文献
