  • 1.1. Brain trehalase specific activity and trehalosemia were measured during the end of the developmental life cycle in non-diapausing and diapausing insects.
  • 2.2. During non-diapausing development, trehalosemia reached maximum values at the beginning of pupal life. Then a constant decrease was observed up to the end of adult life.
  • 3.3. The specific activity of brain trehalase was maximum when the insects were in active feeding periods, minimum activity appearing during moulting phases.
  • 4.4. During diapausing development, trehalosemia was very high at the beginning of pupal life, particularly when insects were exposed to wintering conditions.
  • 5.5. When diapause was broken, trehalosemia fell, announcing adult emergence.
  • 6.6. Brain trehalase activity showed the same qualitative variations as in non-diapausing larvae, but with rather lower values.
  • 7.7. During pupal life, brain trehalase activity decreased markedly during the long period necessary to obtain diapause breakdown.
  • 8.8. Wintering conditions allow a progressive increase of brain trehalase activity, which preceded the fall of trehalosemia.

  • 1.1. Chemical feeding stimulants for an herbivorous fish, Tilapia zillii have been determined by fractionation and bioassay of substances derived from a model food plant.
  • 2.2. Stimulation was produced by amino acids; glutamic acid, aspartic acid, serine, lysine and alanine produced the bulk of stimulatory activity.
  • 3.3. These amino acids are among the most abundant in the test plant, and are markedly different from the amino acids found to stimulate feeding in carnivorous fish.
  • 4.4. On the basis of these results, a chemically-mediated mechanism of feeding niche separation is postulated.

  • 1.1. Adenylate cyclase activity was determined in membranes of white and brown adipose tissue (WAT and BAT, respectively) from rats fed a high-energy diet (EXP group) vs those fed a nutritionally balanced one (CON group).
  • 2.2. The isoproterenol- and guanine nucleotide-induced adenylate cyclase activity in WAT membranes of EXP rats was lower than that in CON rats.
  • 3.3. Relative adenylate cyclase activity in like treated BAT membranes was higher in EXP than in CON rats.
  • 4.4. It is concluded that feeding high-energy diets to rats induces similar post-receptor modifications of adenylate cyclase as found in genetic obese rodents.

  • 1.1. A brief review of development of ideas of the antioxidant activity of carnosine and related compounds is presented.
  • 2.2. An analysis of the behaviour of carnosine in different models of free radical chain reactions shows that carnosine is a potent hydrophylic antioxidant of a direct non-enzymatic action.
  • 3.3. It is characteristic of the higher activity of interaction with active hydroxyl radical.
  • 4.4. However the known biological effects of carnosine cannot be explained only by its anti-oxidant properties.

  • 1.I. Trehalose synthase and trehalase behaviour has been analysed in cultured yeast cells isolated from baker's yeast to increase the understanding of the mechanisms involved in trehalose content modifications observed in anyhydrobiois and hydrobiosis.
  • 2.2. After desiccating yeast cells to a constant weight, trehalose levels sharply increased, whereas the glycogen content decreased, trehalose synthase was stimulated and trehalase was significantly inhibited.
  • 3.3. In desiccated cells after a rehydration for 15 min, trehalose levels dropped, the glycogen content further decreased, the activity of trehalose synthase declined while that of trehalase was dramatically stimulated.
  • 4.4. After rehydration for 12hr, while the trehalose and glycogen content decreased even more, the behaviour of the two enzymes was completely reversed, trehalose synthase being activated and trehalase inhibited.
  • 5.5. The reasons for such impressive enzyme activity alterations in desiccated and rehydrated cells for the moment remain unknown.

  • 2.2. Prior exposure of PMA or FMLP could potentiate the oxidative response by subsequent heterogeneous stimulus, FMLP or PMA.
  • 3.3. In FMLP-primed neutrophils, the cytosol had almost the same activity as resting one and cytosol activity was not eluted from the membrane.

  • 1.1. The role of the visceral nerve in mediating the changes in heart rate associated with different behavioral patterns was investigated in Megalobulimus sanctipauli.
  • 2.2. The results of acute and chronic denervation experiments indicate that the visceral nerve has no excitatory or inhibitory tonic action on the heart of snails retracted into the shell, nor does it account for the increase in heart rate associated with the locomotion and feeding behaviors.
  • 3.3. These changes in heart rate are, probably, indirect effects of increased activity such as an increase in venous return.
  • 4.4. The visceral nerve is responsible for approximately 3/4 of the increase in heart rate associated with the first minute of extrusion.
  • 5.5. The small increase in heart rate observed in denervated animals is probably caused by an increase in venous return generated by muscle activity that forces the head and food out of the shell.

  • 1.1. Oxygen carrying capacity and parameters of erythrocyte-oxygen binding are similar for a range of elasmobranchs with markedly different swimming behaviour.
  • 2.2. Erythrocyte nucleotide components in sharks include the allosteric hemoglobin modifiers GTP and ATP in similar ratios, and the total pool appears independent of locomotory activity. A rhinobatoid ray had no detectable erythrocyte trinucleotides, but had an appreciable pool of AMP together with IMP.
  • 3.3. There was no evidence for either urea or NaCl modulation of hemoglobin function in erythrocytes from a carcharhinid shark.
  • 4.4. These observations lead to the conclusion that parameters of the oxygen transport system in elasmobranchs are highly conserved.

  • 1.1. Mathematical models can be most helpful in attempts to understand the way effects of toxic substances show up under various conditions. They are essential for extrapolation and prediction, especially when effects have to be quantified.
  • 2.2. In some cases, there is a tight relationship between effects and toxicokinetics, i.e. uptake/elimination behaviour of compounds.
  • 3.3. It can be shown that, at least for some compounds, the toxicokinetics depends on feeding conditions. This alone makes it necessary to account for energetics in the use of laboratory observations for predictions and interpretation concerning field data.
  • 4.4. It can also be shown that, given certain effects on individuals, the consequences for populations depend sensitively on energetics. This leads to an even tighter link between ecotoxicology and energetics.
  • 5.5. A basic problem is that realistic models involve a relatively large number of parameters, even under the most simple assumptions about kinetics and effects. This constraints possibilities for extrapolation and prediction.
  • 6.6. All in all, a close link between experimental and modelling programmes is necessary.

  • 1.1. The recorcling sites of 68 acoustical (A), 86 visual (V) sensitive units and 36 bimodal units, predominantly encountered within the torus semicircularis, have been examined with respect to their response characteristics.
  • 2.2. Bimodal units are located more rostrally than A units, but no topographic preference has been found for the V units. The response signs of the three modality types (excitatory, inhibitory for the A modality; On, Off for the V modality) also show no topographic organization.
  • 3.3. The spontaneous spike rate of the V type is smaller than that of the A and bimodal type. Many bimodal cells showed spontaneous activity (76%). Non-spontaneous units are more numerous in the rostral torus.
  • 4.4. The frequency sensitivity of the A units can be divided into H (high frequency) and B (broadband) units.
  • 5.5. B units, which frequently show a more complex excitatory-inhibitory behaviour are located in the middle and caudal part, whereas the H units are mainly found in the rostral part of the torus.
  • 6.6. Phase-locking is restricted to spontaneous, monomodal B units.
  • 7.7. Clusters of neurons can be found in the torus, which contain either A or V units. In the dorso-ventral direction the A clusters are about half the size of the V clusters.

  • 2.2. The soluble enzyme showed a typical Michaelis-Menten behaviour, an inhibitory effect was observed at high thiosulphate and cyanide concentrations.
  • 3.3. The product sulphite was also an inhibitor, instead thiocyanate increased the enzyme velocity when it was added to the incubation mixture.
  • 4.4. A ping-pong mechanism was proposed for Rp. palustris Rhodanese with a stable (free enzyme: E) and an unstable (sulfur substituted enzyme: ES) kinetic enzyme form.
  • 5.5. The insolubilized Rhodanese presented an unusual kinetic behaviour, with sigmoid shape substrate profiles and non-linear double reciprocal plots.
  • 6.6. From the empirical Hill equation, positive cooperativity (n>1) was found for both substrates.

  • 1.1. Since soluble corn bran hemicellulose (CBH) was found to reduce serum cholesterol level in the rat fed with a high cholesterol diet, rats were fed with diets containing orotic acid (OA) to investigate the effect of CBH on lipid metabolism.
  • 2.2. Hepatic lipid accumulation induced by OA was reduced by feeding with CBH in rats. The reduction was not due to inhibition of intestinal absorption of OA by CBH.
  • 3.3. Administration of acetate or propionate, colonie fermentation products of CBH, tended to alleviate the hepatic lipid accumulation by OA in rats.
  • 4.4. OA feeding decreased activities of some hepatic enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis except for acetyl CoA carboxylase. The decreases were reversed by the concurrent feeding of CBH.

  • 1.1. The types of haemocytes during larval development were studied.
  • 2.2. The developmental profile of leucine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase was studied. The maximum LAP activity was found to be in early larval development, while the maximum alkaline phosphatase during the white pupal stage.
  • 3.3. These activities were compared with those determined in cell-free haemolymph.
  • 4.4. Both hydrolytic enzymes have been found histochemically in the prohaemocytes and in the plasmatocytes.
  • 5.5. In cultured haemocytes experiments it was found that 64% of the total LAP activity was secreted into the incubation medium, while electrophoretic analysis of released LAP activity demonstrated that only LAP A isozyme was secreted.
