  • 1.1. The metabolism of glucose, glutamine and ketone-bodies was studied in the small intestine of rats after 5 days of hyperthyroidism.
  • 2.2. Portal-drained visceral bloodflow increased by 20.1% (P < 0.05) in hyperthyroid rats and was accompanied by a decrease in the arteriovenous concentration difference of glutamine (25.7%, P < 0.05), glutamate (22.0%, P < 0.05), alanine (20.9%, P < 0.05) and ammonia (20.6%, P < 0.05) and an increase in that of glucose (27.2%, P < 0.05), lactate (28.9%, P < 0.05) and ketone-bodies (163.2%, P< 0.001).
  • 3.3. The gut of hyperthyroid rats showed increased rates of extraction of glucose, lactate and ketone-bodies.
  • 4.4. Enterocytes isolated from hyperthyroid rats showed increased rates of utilization of glucose and ketone-bodies but that of glutamine were decreased.
  • 5.5. The maximal activities of hexokinase, 6-phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, citrate synthase and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase were increased (by 13.7–36.2%) in intestinal mucosal scrapings of hyperthyroid rats, whereas the activity of glutaminase was decreased (22.1–31.4%).
  • 6.6. It is concluded that hyperthyroidism increases the rates of utilization of glucose and ketone-bodies but decreases that of glutamine (both in vivo and in vitro) by the epithelial cells of the small intestine.

  • 1.1. Porcine adipose tissue was incubated with radiolabeled glucose, acetate or lactate. Saturation curves indicated that lactate > glucose > acetate in providing two-carbon units for fatty-acid synthesis.
  • 2.2. Competition between individual substrates indicated that lactate was the best lipogenic substrate.
  • 3.3. Incubation of all three substrates at concentrations observable in serum indicated that at 5.56mM, glucose was the preferred lipogenic substrate in the presence of 0.1 mM acetate and 1.0 mM lactate.
  • 4.4. At elevated concentrations (18.52mM glucose, 1.0 mM acetate and 10.0 mM lactate), acetate and lactate were preferred to glucose as lipogenic substrates.

  • 1.1. The effect of functional overload produced by tenotomy of synergistic gastrocnemius muscle on the expression of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms in the plantaris and soleus muscles of the rat was studied using gradient sodium dodecyl sulfate-acrylamide gel electrophoresis.
  • 2.2. Five weeks tenotomy, the plantaris and soleus muscle weights induced by tenotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle were 44.3% (P < 0.005) and 37.4% (P < 0.005), respectively, heavier than the contralateral control muscles.
  • 3.3. Although four types of MHC isoforms were observed in both control and experimental plantaris, the percentage of MHC isoforms in the control and experimental muscles differed; the hypertrophied plantaris muscle contained more HCI (P < 0.05), HCIIa and HCIId (P < 0.05) and less HCIIb (P < 0.05) than the control muscle.
  • 4.4. The control soleus muscle contained two MHC isofonns, HCI and HCIIa. However, there was only a single HCI isoform in the hypertrophied soleus muscle.
  • 5.5. These results indicate that overloading a skeletal muscle by removing its synergists produces not only the muscle hypertrophy but also the changes in the expression of MHC isofonns.

  • 1.1. The influences of age (5, 13 and 25-month-old rats), overload as obtained by denervation of synergists, and training on the metabolic capacity, relative muscle cross-sectional area occupied by each fibre type, capillarization and fatigue resistance of the rat m. plantaris were investigated.
  • 2.2. Creatine kinase, phosphorylase and citrate synthase activities were lower in muscles of 25 than in those of 13-month-old rats (P < 0.001).
  • 3.3. Overload resulted in an increased relative area of type I and II a fibres at all ages (P = 0.001).
  • 4.4. Capillary density decreased with overload and increasing age (P < 0.001).
  • 5.5. Fatigue resistance was higher in muscles of 13 than in those of 5-month-old rats (P < 0.05), and increased with overload (P < 0.05) at all ages.
  • 6.6. Fatigue resistance of the whole muscle was not closely related to its oxidative capacity in contrast to what is generally found for single fibres or motor units.

  • 1.1. Changes in metabolic rates and behavior were observed in tufted titmice (Parus bicolor) and Carolina chickadees (Parus carolinensis) exposed to varying conditions of artificial solar radiation, wind, and temperature in a wind tunnel experiment.
  • 2.2. During the wind-on condition, both species showed a significant decrease in mean metabolic rates in the high radiation treatments when compared to the low radiation treatments (P < 0.05).
  • 3.3. Titmouse orientation, posture and level of activity were significantly affected by radiation and wind conditions.
  • 4.4. Metabolic rates observed in the wind tunnel treatments without wind and at low radiation did not significantly differ from similar standard metabolic (black box) treatments (P > 0.05).
  • 5.5. Activity levels did not appear to directly affect metabolic rates observed in the wind tunnel treatments.

  • 1.1. Levels of progesterone and oestrone were estimated by means of RIA in the gonads and pyloric caeca of male specimens of Asterias rubens throughout the reproductive cycle.
  • 2.2. The patterns obtained appeared to be sex-specific on comparison with those of female specimens of A. rubens and it was concluded that progesterone and oestrone in the testes are involved in the regulation of gametogenesis.
  • 3.3. The levels of progesterone in the pyloric caeca were about ten times higher than those in the testes; in the same sequence levels of oestrone were only slightly higher.
  • 4.4. The onset of a new reproductive cycle, taking the abrupt decrease of the pyloric caeca-index as a marker, coincides with a strong decrease of the progesterone level (P < 0.001) and an increase of the oestrone level (P < 0.01) in the pyloric caeca.
  • 5.5. It is supposed that progesterone and oestrone in the pyloric caeca are concerned with making available the materials required for gametogenesis.

  • 1.1. Intestinal temperatures of 10 mudpuppies (Necturus maculosus) subjected to an instantaneous decrease of 6.0°C in water temperature were monitored while animals were alive, alive with gills tied and dead.
  • 2.2. The rates of cooling: alive > alive gills tied > dead, were consistent in all animals.
  • 3.3. Comparisons of data for live and dead mudpuppies indicated that conduction accounted for a mean of 68.5 and therefore convection 31.5% of total heat loss in these experiments.
  • 4.4. The external gills were the site of approximately half (54.4%) of total internal convective heat transfer with the remainder occurring through the body surface.

  • 1.1. Changes in the glycogen content, condition, stomach content and acetic acid concentration of mussels Mytilus edulis and cockles Cerastoderma edule were followed during periods of up to 14 days of exposure (to air) at temperatures of 5 and 20°C.
  • 2.2. In animals with a high glycogen content the glycogen is not used during the first 3 to 7 days, at high and low temperature respectively.
  • 3.3. After this latent period the glycogen concentration often decreased, coinciding with a high mortality and an increase of the concentration of acetic acid.
  • 4.4. In cockles with a low glycogen content, and kept at a high temperature, glycogen can be used from the beginning of the stress period.
  • 5.5. Between species no clear differences were found.
  • 6.6. The stomach content decreased during exposure; however, the stomach content amounted to only 0.5 to 0.7% of the body weight, and is thought to be of minor importance as an energy source during the stress period.
  • 7.7. Especially at the higher temperatures glycogen finally is transformed into acetic acid.
  • 8.8. It is concluded that during exposure, the animals do not die because of a lack of energy reserves, but because of a high accumulation of acids.

  • 1.1. Primary cultures of isolated sheep hepatocytes were used to characterize metabolic functions of liver: gluconeogenesis, ureagenesis and protein synthesis. The rates of all three metabolic activities were linear over a 20 hr culture period.
  • 2.2. Hepatocytes in the presence of glucagon increased the synthesis of urea by approx 30% (P < 0.05) and increased release of glucose into the medium by 60% (P < 0.05).
  • 3.3. In the absence of insulin, significantly more (35%; P < 0.05) glucose was released in the medium than in the presence of insulin.
  • 4.4. Results help evaluate the primary culture of sheep hepatocytes as an appropriate experimental model to study nutritional and hormonal regulation of liver in the ruminant species.

  • 1.1. The purpose of this study was to determine whether biochemical changes of skeletal muscle that occur as a result of exercise in young rats persist into adulthood.
  • 2.2. Littermates (10 days old) were assigned to a 3, 6 and 12 week control or training group. In addition, a rest-exercise group (R-E) and exercise-rest (E-R) group were included.
  • 3.3. The rest-exercise and exercise-rest rats were maintained for the 12 weeks with the first 6 weeks being either rest or exercise and the condition reversed during the last 6 weeks of the experiment.
  • 4.4. Myofibril ATPase activity of rat plantaris increased from the 10d to 12 week animals (P < 0.05). As anticipated, training resulted in a lowered activity at 6 and 12 weeks compared to controls.
  • 5.5. The Ca2+ uptake and Ca2+-ATPase activity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum followed a similar pattern.
  • 6.6. With regard to the exercise-rest rats, the myofibril and SR ATPase activities at 12 weeks were comparable to the 12 weeks control rats.
  • 7.7. The rest-exercise group approximated the 12 week training group with regard to myofibril and SR ATPase activities (P > 0.05).
  • 8.8. The results suggest that the training adaptations that occur during development of skeletal muscle return to normal, when training ceases in the adult rat.
  • 9.9. Furthermore, animals that started to train prior to puberty do not have a greater capacity to adapt than animals which initiated training during adulthood.

  • 3.3. Oxygen consumption in air at 10°C is more than twice the rate shown by low salinity acclimated whelks in normoxic water (PWO2 = 150 Torr).
  • 4.4. Q10 for oxygen consumption in air is about 1.0 in the temperature range 10–20°C.

  • 1.1. One-day-old male (m) and female (f) chickens from a population living at 3300m for several generations were raised at 3300 m (HA) and at sea level (SL).
  • 2.2. The histology of the pulmonary arterioles was studied in the HA and SL chickens when they were 4 weeks old and the thickness of their muscular coat (MT) determined.
  • 3.3. Pulmonary arterial pressure (Ppa), hematocrit (Hct) and the wet and dry weights of the total ventricle, left ventricle, septum and right ventricle (RV) were obtained when the HA and SL birds were 8 weeks old.
  • 4.4. Results indicated that chickens have a thick muscular coat in their pulmonary arterioles. MT expressed as a fraction of arteriolar diameter (MT/AD) was 0.113 at SL. Exposure to HA increased this value in the m (0.137, P < 0.01) but not in the f (0.123, P > 0.05).
  • 5.5. Ppa, RV and Hct were significantly higher at HA in both sexes. The degree of pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy observed was smaller than that found in earlier generations of these chickens studied several years ago. This probably indicates some degree of adaptation after generations of life at HA.

  • 1.1. Noradrenaline (NA) concentrations in the duodenum and colon of copper-deficient and Cu-adequate steers and rats were determined.
  • 2.2. In Cu-deficient steers exhibiting diarrhoea, there were significant decrease (P < 0.05) in duodenal and colonic muscle NA concentrations. Duodenal and colonic mucosal NA concentrations in the steer were also diminished by Cu deficiency but this effect was not statistically significant.
  • 3.3. Rat intestinal musculature had a higher NA concentration than that of the steer. Rat duodenal muscle NA was not influenced by Cu deficiency, but increased markedly with age.
  • 4.4. It is suggested that the decline in NA concentration of cattle musculature in copper deficiency may have a role to play in the aetiology of diarrhoea in such animals.

  • 1.1. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine β-carotene and retinol in cow serum.
  • 2.2. Two groups of state and private farm cows (Groups 1 and 2) were used to assess seasonal variation when different food sources were fed to cows on serum β -carotene and retinol concentrations.
  • 3.3. Mean serum concentrations of β-carotene and retinol from October to April in both Groups 1 and 2 cows were lower (P < 0.05) than in the other months when the cows were fed various combination of maize silage, alfalfa and carrot residues and grass hay, respectively.
  • 4.4. Mean serum β-carotene and retinol concentrations in June and July were higher (P < 0.05) than in other months when the cows were in pasture.
  • 5.5. Mean serum β-carotene and retinol concentrations in May, August and September were lower (P < 0.05) than in June and July and higher (P < 0.05) than in other months when a lesser amount of green pasture was available to the cows.
  • 6.6. There was a seasonal variation (P < 0.05) in serum β -carotene and retinol concentrations. When the carotene intake is very high, conversion of β -carotene to retinol decreases. Mean monthly serum β -carotene and retinol concentrations showed that combination of alfalfa hay and maize silage, and grass hay and carrot residues can maintain adequate serum β-carotene and retinol concentrations during the dry season.

  • 1.1. The ECG of aquatic Amhystoma tigrinum from the Colorado Rocky Mountains was recorded while the animals submerged and emerged in water. Older larvae and metamorphosed adults were compared.
  • 2.2. Free-swimming animals of both types showed slight emergence tachycardia when taking a “gulp” of air.
  • 3.3. Preventing access to air for 30 min or more resulted in a slight bradycardia in larvae. Some adults responded with increased, others with decreased, heart rate depending on their level of excitement.
  • 4.4. Restraining the animals before forced submergence caused a greater bradycardia than when unrestrained.
  • 5.5. Low dissolved oxygen accentuated the cardiac responses of larvae to submergence but not in adults.
  • 6.6. Atropine only partially blocked the diving responses of both forms.
  • 7.7. The degree of submergence bradycardia seems to be a function of the ability to extract oxygen from water. It probably is not an adaptation to diving in these forms. Instead the submerged heart rate in these predominantly aquatic salamanders may be the “normal” rate with emergence tachycardias for breaths of air.

  • 1.1. Acid and alkaline phosphatase activities of eight different snake venoms were determined quantitatively by using synthetic substrates, o-carboxyphenylphosphate and p-nitrophenylphosphate respectively.
  • 2.2. It was found that most of Elapidae venoms investigated had both acid and alkaline phosphatase activities.
  • 3.3. Three Crotalidae venoms investigated did not show any alkaline phosphatase activity.
  • 4.4. The strength of venom acid phosphatase activity is as follows: Agkistroden acutus > Naja haje > Naja naja samarensis > Naja naja atra > Naja melanoleuca.
  • 5.5. The strength of venom alkaline phosphatase activity by using p-nitrophenylphosphate is in the order of Naja hannah > Naja haje > Naja naja samarensis > Naja naja atra > Naja melanoleuca.When o-carboxyphenylphosphate was used as a substrate, the order of enzyme activity is Naja hannah > Naja haje > Naja naja samarensis > Naja melanoleuca > Naja naja atra.
  • 6.6. Acid phosphatase activity of all the Elapidae venoms was inhibited completely by fluoride. The alkaline phosphatase activity of Elapidae venoms was not inhibited by fluoride either using p-nitrophenylphosphate or o-carboxyphenylphosphate.
  • 7.7. The acid phosphatase of all the Elapidae venoms was not inhibited by zinc ion. However, most of the venom alkaline phosphatases were inhibited by zinc ion.
  • 8.8. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) had inhibitory action on venom phosphatase activity. However, tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminoethane had a counter effect on the inhibitory action of EDTA.
  • 9.9. Optimum pH studies of the snake venom phosphatases showed that the acid phosphatases of the snake venoms had their highest activity in the range of pH 4–5. The alkaline phosphatases of the snake venoms had their optimum pH at 9.
  • 10.10. Comparable experiments were also conducted by using chicken intestine alkaline phosphatase and wheat germ acid phosphatase.
