Previous studies of the effect of carbonation on taste perception have suggested that it may be negligible, manifesting primarily in increases in the perceived intensity of weak salt and sour stimuli. Assuming CO2 solutions in the mouth stimulate only trigeminal nerve endings, this result is not altogether surprising; however, there are neurophysiological data indicating that CO2 stimulates gustatory as well as trigeminal fibers. In that case, carbonation might alter the quality profile of a stimulus without producing substantial changes in overall taste intensity--much as occurs when qualitatively different taste stimuli are mixed. To address this possibility, subjects were asked to rate the total taste intensity of moderate concentrations of stimuli representing each of the basic tastes and their binary combinations, with an without added carbonation. They then subdivided total taste intensity into the proportions of sweetness, saltiness, sourness, bitterness and 'other taste qualities' they perceived. The addition of carbonation produced only small increases in ratings of total taste intensity. However, rather dramatic alterations in the quality profiles of stimuli were observed, particularly for sweet and salty tastes. The nature of the interaction is consistent with a direct effect of carbonation/CO2 on the gustatory system, although the possibility that at least some of the observed effects reflect trigeminal-gustatory interactions cannot be ruled out.   相似文献

Mammalian nasal chemosensation is predominantly mediated by two independent neuronal pathways, the olfactory and the trigeminal system. Within the early olfactory system, spatiotemporal responses of the olfactory bulb to various odorants have been mapped in great detail. In contrast, far less is known about the representation of volatile chemical stimuli at an early stage in the trigeminal system, the trigeminal ganglion (TG), which contains neurons directly projecting to the nasal cavity. We have established an in vivo preparation that allows high-resolution imaging of neuronal population activity from a large region of the rat TG using voltage-sensitive dyes (VSDs). Application of different chemical stimuli to the nasal cavity elicited distinct, stimulus-category specific, spatiotemporal activation patterns that comprised activated as well as suppressed areas. Thus, our results provide the first direct insights into the spatial representation of nasal chemosensory information within the trigeminal ganglion imaged at high temporal resolution.  相似文献

The quantity and quality of tannins extractable from commercial wattle grown in Kenya (Acacia mearnsii) and from nineAcacia species indigenous to Kenya (A. hockii, A. kirkii, A. mellifera, A. nilotica, A. polyacantha, A. sayel, A. Senegal, A. sieberiana, andA. xanthophloea) has been examined by means of three different assay procedures including the official hide-powder method employed by the leather trade. This revealed thatA. hockii, A. kirkii, A. senegel andA. xanthophloea all produced tannin in amounts comparable to wattle but in each case the protein precipitating capacity of the extract was different from that of wattle, suggestive of rapid complexation that would lead to a poor quality leather. Protein precipitating profiles comparable to that of wattle extract could, however, be produced by mixing the extracts of tannin-rich species with those of other species which, while relatively rich in extractable matter, appeared to have relatively little tannin. Suggestions are made for further studies that could lead to acceptable vegetable tannin being produced from indigenous KenyanAcacia species.  相似文献

In the nose, the capacity to detect and react to volatile chemicals is mediated by two separate but interrelated sensory pathways, the olfactory and trigeminal systems. Because most chemosensory stimulants, at sufficient concentration, produce both olfactory and trigeminal sensations (i.e., stinging, burning or pungent), it is relevant to seek how these anatomically distinct systems could interact. This study was designed to evaluate by psychophysical measurements the modifications of the olfactory sensitivity of 20 subjects to phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) and butanol (BUT), after trigeminal stimulation with allyl isothiocyanate (AIC). Thresholds obtained in two separate sessions, one with and the other without previous trigeminal stimulation, were compared using a two-alternative forced-choice procedure, with a classical ascending concentrations method. The results showed that, whatever the odorant (PEA or BUT), AIC trigeminal activation produced a decrease in the olfactory thresholds, corresponding to an increase in olfactory sensitivity. These data confirm that in physiological conditions the trigeminal system modulates the activity of olfactory receptor cells but do not exclude the possibility of a central modulation of olfactory information by trigeminal stimuli. These findings are discussed in terms of methodological and physiological conditions.  相似文献

It is not possible to accurately predict the perceptual response to odorants and odorant mixtures without understanding patterns of suppression and facilitation that result from interactions between the olfactory and trigeminal systems. The current study extends previous findings by exploring the effect of intensive training on the interaction between these systems and also by using a different mixed chemosensory stimulus to examine whether the principles established in earlier studies generalize to different odorants. Stimuli were chosen so as to selectively activate the olfactory (H2S) and trigeminal (CO2) nerves. In addition, linalool was included as a stimulus that activated both systems. Thirty-five participants (19 men, 16 women) rated the intensity of each stimulus when presented both alone and in binary mixtures (linalool + H2S, and linalool + CO2). Chemosensory event-related potentials were obtained from three recording positions. Analysis of intensity ratings showed that linalool was significantly less intense than the other stimuli when presented alone. In binary mixtures, H2S was strongly suppressed by linalool. One week of intensive odor training produced significant and specific reductions in the intensity of linalool and H2S, both alone and in their mixture. Training with a different odor (champignol) had no effect. Chemosensory event-related potential data confirmed previous findings showing changes in topographical distribution that reflected the degree of trigeminal activity. Binary mixtures generally produced larger amplitudes than single stimuli. Latencies clearly differentiated between the three single stimuli and the binary mixtures. Changes were observed in event-related potentials that reflected those obtained for intensity ratings in that they were observed for linalool and H2S in the linalool trained group only. The amplitude of the late 'endogenous' component (P3) was significantly decreased for these odors at frontal recording sites. In summary, strong and specific training effects were observed in intensity ratings for participants trained with the test odor (linalool), but not for those trained with a different odor. This was supported by a significant decrease of amplitudes of the event-related potentials at frontal recording sites following training with the test odor only  相似文献

Mechanical and chemical sensitivity of the palatine nerve, ramus palatinus facialis, innervating the anterior palate of the puffer, Fugu pardalis, and their central projection to the primary taste center were investigated. Application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the central cut end of the palatine nerve resulted in retrogradely labeled neurons in the geniculate ganglion but no such neurons in the trigeminal ganglion, suggesting that the palatine nerve is represented only by the facial component. Tracing of the facial sensory root in serial histological sections of the brain stem suggested that the facial sensory nerve fibers project only to the visceral sensory column of the medulla. Peripheral recordings from the palatine nerve bundle showed that both mechanical and chemical stimuli caused marked responses. Mechanosensitive fibers were rather uniformly distributed in the nerve bundle. Intra-cranial recordings from the trigeminal and facial nerves at their respective roots revealed that tactile information produced in the anterior palate was carried by the facial nerve fibers. Elimination of the sea water current over the receptive field also caused a marked response in the palatine nerve bundle or facial nerve root while this did not cause any detectable responses in the trigeminal nerve root. Single fiber analyses of the mechanical responsiveness of the palatine nerve were performed by recording unit responses of 106 single fibers to mechanical stimuli (water flow), HCl (0.005 M), uridine-5'-monophosphate (UMP, 0.001 M), proline (0.01 M), CaCl2 (0.5 M), and NaSCN (0.5 M). All these fibers responded well to one of the above stimuli; however, most taste fibers did not respond well to the inorganic salts. The palatine fibers (n = 36), identified as mechanosensitive, never responded to any of the chemical stimuli, whereas chemosensitive fibers (n = 70) did not respond to mechanical stimuli at all. The chemosensitive units showed a high specificity to the above stimuli: they tended to respond selectively to hydrochloric acid, UMP, or proline. The responses of the mechanosensitive units consisted of phasic and tonic impulse trains and the sensitivity of the units varied considerably. The results reveal that the facial nerve fibers innervating the anterior palate of the puffer contain two kinds of afferent fibers, chemosensory and mechanosensory respectively, and suggest that the convergence of the tactile and gustatory information first occurs in the neurons of the primary gustatory center in the medulla.

Trigeminal ganglion neurons in adult rats adapt to periodic whisker deflections in the range of 1-40 Hz, manifested as a reduction in spike counts to progressively later stimuli in a train of pulsatile or sinusoidal deflections. For high velocity, pulsatile deflections, adaptation is time- and frequency-dependent; as in the case of thalamic and cortical neurons, adaptation is greater at higher stimulus frequencies. With slower velocity, sinusoidal movements, trigeminal ganglion cells differ from central neurons, however, by exhibiting strong adaptation even at low frequencies. For both types of stimuli, effects in trigeminal ganglion neurons were more pronounced in rats maintained during the recording session under neuromuscular blockade than in non-paralysed animals. Results are consistent with previous findings in other systems that frequency-dependent adaptation of cutaneous primary afferent neurons is affected by mechanical properties of the skin. Such effects are likely to vary depending on the nature of the whisker stimuli and physiological states that affect skin viscoelasticity.  相似文献

Goldfish were classically conditioned with a light as the CS and shock as the US. The UR was a decrease in respiration. After 15 or 60 conditioning trials the fish were tested with novel stimuli (clicks) during the CS-US interval. High and moderate intensity novel stimuli produced a significant decrease in CRs (external inhibition) for fish with 60 conditioning trials (5.5 or 10.5 sec CS-US interval), but not fish with 15 conditioning trials. Low intensity novel stimuli produced no evidence for disinhibition (an increase in CRs). Control groups (e.g., groups with random presentations of the CS and US) showed that the external inhibition for fish with 60 conditioning trials was inhibition of a true CR.  相似文献

A currently popular hypothesis states that the expression of carotenoid-dependent sexual ornaments and immune function may be correlated because both traits are positively affected by carotenoids. However, such a correlation may arise for another reason: it is well known that immune function is dependent on nutritional condition. A recent study has suggested that the expression of ornaments may too depend on nutritional condition, as males in good nutritional condition are better at assimilating and/or modulating carotenoids. Thus, carotenoid-dependent ornaments and immune function may be correlated because both are dependent on nutritional condition. To elucidate if, and how, ornamentation and immune function are linked, pheasant diets were supplemented with carotenoid and/or protein in a fully factorial experiment. Carotenoid treatment affected wattle coloration and tail growth, but not cellular or humoral immunity. Immunity was unrelated to males' initial ornamentation including wattle colour. Males in better body condition, measured as residual mass, increased their wattle coloration more when carotenoid supplemented. Protein positively affected humoral but not cellular immunity, but had no effect on ornaments. Cellular, but not humoral, immunity increased with male body condition. Thus, there was no evidence that an immune-stimulatory effect of carotenoids resulted in wattle coloration honestly signalling immune function, but wattle coloration may still signal male body condition.  相似文献

Black wattle (Acacia mearnsii, De Wild.) is a fast growing tree species introduced into South Africa in the nineteenth century for commercial purposes. While being an important source of timber and firewood for local communities, black wattle is an aggressive invasive species and has pervasive adverse environmental impacts in South Africa. Little is known about the effects of black wattle encroachment on soil carbon, therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of black wattle encroachment of natural grassland on soil carbon stocks and dynamics. Focussing on two sites in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, the study analysed carbon stocks in soil and litter on a chronosequence of black wattle stands of varying ages (up to >50 years) and compared these with adjacent native grassland. The study found that woody encroachment of grassland at one site had an insignificant effect on soil and litter carbon stocks. The second site showed a clear decline in combined soil and litter carbon stocks following wattle encroachment. The lowest stock was in the oldest wattle stand, meaning that carbon stocks are still declining after 50 years of encroachment. The results from the two sites demonstrate the importance of considering changes in soil carbon when evaluating ecosystem effects of invasive species.  相似文献

Structure and histology of the wattle in the male White bellbird ( Procnias alba ) are described. The proximal two-thirds of the wattle contains only very sparse, frail connective tissue and is isolated both from the respiratory tract and from pneumatic spaces in the skull. The wattle is richly vascularized, with an extensive network of veins, which completely fill the lumen in the distal third. The larger veins possess longitudinal as well as circular muscle. Longitudinal muscle bundles (some associated with feather follicles) are scattered in the loose connective tissue of the periphery. The wattle is compared in structure with the superficially similar frontal process of the turkey ( Meleagris gallopavo ). The mechanism of extension and retraction is discussed.  相似文献

Mammalian mating systems are thought to be shaped by the spatial distribution and abundance of key resources, which in turn influence the spacing behaviour of individuals. In particular, female home range size is predicted to reflect the availability of key resources. We documented the availability and distribution of food and shelter resources for two neighbouring populations of bobucks, or mountain brushtail possums, Trichosurus cunninghami, that were characterised by different mating systems: our “forest population” was socially monogamous, whereas the “roadside population” was polygynous. Both silver wattle, Acacia dealbata, the main food resource for bobucks, and den-trees, which provided shelter, occurred at significantly higher density at the roadside site. The pattern of distribution of these two resources also differed between the sites. Both food and den-trees were scattered evenly throughout the roadside habitat. In contrast, den-trees were located predominantly at one end of the forest site, while silver wattle trees were located at the other. There was no significant difference in the amount of silver wattle, or in the number of den-trees, located within the home ranges of individual females at the two sites. However, forest females had home ranges, on average, almost three times the size of those of roadside females. At the roadside site, the size of female home ranges varied inversely with the density of silver wattle, indicating that these females ranged over as large an area as necessary to gain access to sufficient silver wattle trees. There was no such relationship among forest females. These populations provide a clear example of resource distribution determining female home range size. This influenced the number of female home ranges a male’s home range overlapped with, which in turn determined the mating system. Such clear links between resource availability and mating system have not previously been established in a marsupial.  相似文献

The introduction and eradication of alien invasive plant species potentially alters feeding and spatial ecology of wild primates. We investigated whether the removal of an important dietary resource for wild chacma baboons (Papio hamadryas ursinus), black wattle (Acacia mearnsii), from a nature reserve would result in longer daily path lengths (DPLs) and greater movement toward other resources, specifically alternative black wattle stands outside the reserve, agricultural plots, and sleeping and geophagy sites. We fitted a juvenile male baboon with a self-releasing GPS collar to track the focal troop’s movements on Wildcliff Nature Reserve and adjacent properties, located in the Western Cape, South Africa, from January 25, 2010 to January 18, 2011. During this time, Working for Water, an environmental conservation initiative of the South African Department of Water Affairs, removed black wattle from the baboons’ home range. We estimated monthly home range (5.30–20.58?km2) and DPL (1.7–11.7?km) and quantified the baboons’ use of five dominant vegetation types. Our vegetation use-availability analysis indicated that the troop preferred black wattle, Afromontane forests, and, to a lesser extent, pasture, but used agricultural plots and fynbos less than expected by availability. With increasing black wattle removal in the core area, the troop traveled further toward distant sources of black wattle, using sleeping sites out of their core area to accommodate such long day journeys. A general linear model indicated that movement to black wattle stands, as well as changing sleeping sites, day length, and both spring and winter seasons all significantly increased DPL. We suggest the influence that alien invasive species and their eradication has on ranging behavior should be a consideration in primate conservation and management policies.  相似文献

Gamma-aminobutyric acid-immunoreactive neurons in the rat trigeminal nuclei   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The distribution of GABAergic neurons in the rat trigeminal nuclei was studied using a highly specific monoclonal antibody (mAb3A12) to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Immunopositive cells were relatively abundant in the marginal and gelatinosa beds of the caudal part of the trigeminal spinal tract nucleus, and in the dorsomedial areas of the oral subnucleus and the principal nucleus. A high density of GABA-immunoreactive somata was also found in the rostral part of the oral subnucleus and in the adjacent parvicellular reticular formation as well as in the supratrigeminal and intertrigeminal regions. Thus, the distribution of the GABAergic cells showed a relatively high density in areas related to the convergence of sensory stimuli, and in zones that contain interneurons inhibiting masticatory motorneurons. The results suggest, therefore, that GABA might play an important role both in discriminative sensory processing and in reflex modulation of the orofacial region.Abbreviations RF reticular formation - FRp parvicellular reticular formation - Vc trigeminal nucleus of the spinal tract, subnucleus caudalis - Vmes mesencephalic nucleus - Vmo trigeminal motor nucleus - Vo trigeminal nucleus of the spinal tract, subnucleus oralis - Vp principal trigeminal nucleus - Vsp spinal trigeminal nucleus - Vsup supratrigeminal nucleus  相似文献

We systematically paired auditory, olfactory, and social stimuli with each injection of morphine in rats. We found that, when morphine was kept constant at a low dose, the external stimuli acquired the property of a conditional stimulus (CS) to cause hyperthermia which was antagonized by naloxone. In rats in which morphine doses were regularly increased to cause morphine dependence, the CS presented during withdrawal, caused reduction in withdrawal signs (wet shakes, hypothermia, aggression) and produced hyperglycemia as well as elevation of striatal homovanillic acid. CS-induced alleviation of withdrawal hypothermia was blocked by mecamylamine, phenoxybenzamine, haloperidol, benztropine or naloxone but not by cyproheptadine or propranolol.  相似文献

The purely olfactory odorants coumarin, octanoic acid, phenylethyl alcohol, and vanillin had been found to be consistently identified when presented retronasally but could not be identified when presented oral-cavity only (OCO). However, OCO discrimination of these odorants was not tested. Consequently, it remained possible that the oral cavity trigeminal system might provide sufficient information to differentiate these purely olfactory odorants. To evaluate this, 20 participants attempted to discriminate vapor-phase coumarin, octanoic acid, phenylethyl alcohol, and vanillin and, as a control, the trigeminal stimulus peppermint extract, from their glycerin solvent, all presented OCO. None of the purely olfactory odorants could be discriminated OCO, but, as expected, peppermint extract was consistently discriminated. This inability to discriminate clarifies and expands the previous report of lack of OCO identification of purely olfactory odorants. Taken together with prior data, these results suggest that the oral cavity trigeminal system is fully unresponsive to these odorants in vapor phase and that coumarin, octanoic acid, phenylethyl alcohol, and vanillin are indeed purely olfactory stimuli. The OCO discrimination of peppermint extract demonstrated that the absence of discrimination for the purely olfactory odorants was odorant dependent and confirmed that the oral cavity trigeminal system will provide differential response information to some vapor-phase stimuli.  相似文献

Somatosensory neurons in teleosts and amphibians are sensitive to thermal, mechanical, or nociceptive stimuli [1, 2]. The two main types of such cells in zebrafish--Rohon-Beard and trigeminal neurons--have served as models for neural development [3-6], but little is known about how they encode tactile stimuli. The hindbrain networks that transduce somatosensory stimuli into a motor output encode information by using very few spikes in a small number of cells [7], but it is unclear whether activity in the primary receptor neurons is similarly efficient. To address this question, we manipulated the activity of zebrafish neurons with the light-activated cation channel, Channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) [8, 9]. We found that photoactivation of ChR2 in genetically defined populations of somatosensory neurons triggered escape behaviors in 24-hr-old zebrafish. Electrophysiological recordings from ChR2-positive trigeminal neurons in intact fish revealed that these cells have extremely low rates of spontaneous activity and can be induced to fire by brief pulses of blue light. Using this technique, we find that even a single action potential in a single sensory neuron was at times sufficient to evoke an escape behavior. These results establish ChR2 as a powerful tool for the manipulation of neural activity in zebrafish and reveal a degree of efficiency in coding that has not been found in primary sensory neurons.  相似文献
