This study aimed to identify factors associated with dermal exposure to cypermethrin and assess the health risks among young children in an agricultural community in Thailand. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the parents/caregivers of 58 children (aged 1–3 years). Wipe samples were analyzed for cypermethrin by gas chromatography-microelectron capture detection (GC-µECD). Health risk assessments were based on the cypermethrin concentration on the children’s hands and feet. Spearman’s correlation indicated significant associations among cypermethrin concentrations on the hands, feet, floors/wooden beds, and toys (rho?=?0.438–0.613, p-value <0.001). Cypermethrin concentrations on the hands were significantly and inversely correlated with the child’s caregiver being the child’s mother and insecticide use (p?<?0.01). Concentrations on the feet were significantly correlated with insecticide use (p?<?0.05) and showering (p?<?0.01). The hazard quotient calculated from dermal exposure via the hands and feet showed no risk for potential noncarcinogenic effects (5.586?×?10?5 in the dry season and 4.301?×?10?4 in the wet season). These findings suggest that young children might not be at risk for cypermethrin exposure through the dermal route. Residential exposure among young children may be reduced by improved hygiene. Health risk assessments of environmental insecticide exposure via the oral and inhalation routes require further investigation.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the associations among parenting style, gender, Chinese culture, and overweight children's attraction to physical activity. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 104 parents with overweight children were recruited from six primary schools in Hong Kong, China. Only overweight children in grades 3 through 6 (8 to 12 years of age) were invited to participate. Overweight children were defined and identified using the international cut‐off points stratified by sex and age. Questionnaires were used to assess Children's Attraction to Physical Activity (CAPA), perceived competence, and parental socialization influences. Results: Parental influence, especially father's role modeling, was significantly related to attraction to physical activity in overweight Chinese children. Perceived physical competence was also an important correlate of an overweight child's attraction to physical activity. Gender differences in CAPA were not significant among the Chinese overweight children. However, gender differences were observed in the relationship between parent physical activity orientation and CAPA. Discussion: In addition to a child's perceived competence, father's role modeling can provide additional and significant influence with regard to overweight children's attraction to physical activity. Differences in cultural orientation toward body weight should be considered when explaining overweight children's physical activity.  相似文献

A safety characterization specific to children was performed for methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) according to the guidelines of the Voluntary Children's Chemical Evaluation Program (VCCEP). The characterization indicates that MEK exposures are not expected to pose an acute or chronic risk to children. Hazard information, summarized as per the VCCEP Tier structure, indicated no need for additional studies. All exposure pathways potentially relevant to children were considered, including child contact with environmental media, food, drinking water, parental transfer to child (human milk or dermal contact), direct consumer product use, and presence during product use. The assessment found that exposures from anthropogenic sources that children may encounter on a daily basis are very low, and in particular well below the chronic inhalation and oral health benchmarks (RfC and RfD) derived by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Indoor uses of consumer products can result in higher acute exposures, but these are short-lived and also fall below chronic benchmarks adjusted to an acute timeframe. In addition, MEK is rapidly metabolized and excreted, thus acute exposures do not lead to an increase in body burden over time. The USEPA concluded the VCCEP submission sufficiently characterized potential risks to children, and that no additional toxicity tests were needed for MEK.  相似文献

Because children's ability to support themselves falls below their consumption, human young are subsidized by others throughout much of their growth and development. Mothers, however, who often have multiple dependents of different ages, are faced with an allocation problem (Fig. 1). This has led to important debate about the evolution of a long period dependence and the development of nonmaternal strategies to provision young. This article focuses on the critical role that children themselves play. Because the human subsistence niche incorporates a broad diversity of resources that require variable procurement and processing costs, dependent children can also be important producers, furthering both a need and an opportunity for cooperative breeding.  相似文献

Monte Carlo risk assessments commonly take as input empirical or parametric exposure distributions from specially designed exposure studies. The exposure studies typically have limited duration, since their design is based on statistical and practical factors (such as cost and respondent burden). For these reasons, the exposure period studied rarely corresponds to the biologic exposure period, which we define as the time at risk that is relevant for quantifying exposure that may result in health effects. Both the exposure period studied and the biologic exposure period will often differ from the exposure interval used in a Monte Carlo analysis. Such time period differences, which are often not accounted for, can have dramatic effects on the ultimate risk assessment. When exposure distributions are right skewed and/or follow a lognormal distribution, exposure will usually be overestimated for percentiles above the median by direct use of exposure study empirical data, since biologic exposure periods are generally longer than the exposure periods in exposure assessment studies. We illustrate the effect that biologic exposure time period and response error can have on exposure distributions, using soil ingestion as an example. Beginning with variance components from lognormally distributed soil ingestion estimates, we illustrate the effect of different modeling assumptions, and the sensitivity of the resulting analyses to these assumptions. We develop a strategy for determining appropriate exposure input distributions for soil ingestion, and illustrate this using data on soil ingestion in children.  相似文献

The coordination of visual attention among social partners is central to many components of human behavior and human development. Previous research has focused on one pathway to the coordination of looking behavior by social partners, gaze following. The extant evidence shows that even very young infants follow the direction of another''s gaze but they do so only in highly constrained spatial contexts because gaze direction is not a spatially precise cue as to the visual target and not easily used in spatially complex social interactions. Our findings, derived from the moment-to-moment tracking of eye gaze of one-year-olds and their parents as they actively played with toys, provide evidence for an alternative pathway, through the coordination of hands and eyes in goal-directed action. In goal-directed actions, the hands and eyes of the actor are tightly coordinated both temporally and spatially, and thus, in contexts including manual engagement with objects, hand movements and eye movements provide redundant information about where the eyes are looking. Our findings show that one-year-olds rarely look to the parent''s face and eyes in these contexts but rather infants and parents coordinate looking behavior without gaze following by attending to objects held by the self or the social partner. This pathway, through eye-hand coupling, leads to coordinated joint switches in visual attention and to an overall high rate of looking at the same object at the same time, and may be the dominant pathway through which physically active toddlers align their looking behavior with a social partner.  相似文献

Aerobic plate counts (APC), coliforms, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli and eight foodborne pathogens were tested in 1008 cheap and junk foods, including candies, dried cakes, chewing gum, chocolate, dried and seasoned seafood, ice cream, and sugary foods. APCs were positive for 342 samples (33·9%), and the majority of the counts were 2–3 log CFU g?1 or ml?1 (average: 1·10 log CFU g?1 or ml?1). Most samples (97·3%) contained no coliforms (average: 0·07 log CFU g?1 or ml?1). Bacillus cereus was detected in 68 samples (average: 0·14 log CFU g?1 or ml?1). Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes were detected in 6 and 1 samples, respectively, whereas other foodborne pathogens were not isolated. The highest bacterial counts were associated with dried and seasoned seafood products and dried cakes, suggesting that appropriate regulations of these food types should be considered. Cheap and junk foods were produced mainly in developing countries, but there were no significant differences in the bacterial counts among different countries of origin. The presence of foodborne pathogens may pose a risk for children. These results suggest that there is cause for deeper concern about the safety of these foods and that effective countermeasures should be established to improve their microbiological safety.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Food safety is especially important for children, but only limited information is available about the microbiological quality of cheap and junk foods that are consumed frequently by primary schoolchildren (e.g. dried cakes, candies and chocolates). The present study investigated the microbial quality of cheap and junk foods, and our results indicate that these foods are a potential health risk for children, therefore, deeper concern about the safety of these foods and effective countermeasures should be established to improve their microbiological safety. The present study may contribute to the development of an appropriate child food safety management system.  相似文献

A series of laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments have been conducted at the University of Washington to improve the empirical grounding of dermal/soil pathway risk calculations. This article presents results from controlled trials, conducted in a greenhouse, in which volunteers engaged in activities in soil amended with a fluorescent marker. Activities included transplanting of bedding plants and laying of pipe by adults and children's play. Soil contact on hands, forearms, lower legs, and faces was examined using both fluoro-metric and gravimetric measurements. Results provide information on pre- and postactivity loadings, the extent of contact associated with the selected activities, and the effects of clothing, activity duration, and soil moisture. Preactivity loadings were consistent with previously reported observations. Following activity, skin coverage was found to be substantially incomplete except on hands. Local soil loadings may therefore deviate markedly from mean values obtained by washing skin surfaces. A protective effect of clothing was observed but may reflect the relatively short duration of the experiments and the use of freshly laundered clothing. No significant trend in soil loading with exposure duration was found, although some evidence of increasing surface area involvement with time was observed. Finally, wet soil activities produced consistently higher loadings on volunteers' hands than dry soil activities.  相似文献

Because of their vulnerable population status, assessing exposure levels and impacts of toxins on the health status of Gulf of Mexico marine turtle populations is critical. From 2011 to 2013, two large blooms of the red tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, occurred along the west coast of Florida USA (from October 2011 to January 2012 and October 2012 to April 2013). Other than recovery of stranded individuals, it is unknown how harmful algal blooms affected the Kemp's ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys kempii) inhabiting the affected coastal waters. It is essential to gather information regarding brevetoxin exposure in these turtles to determine if it poses a threat to marine turtle health and survival. From April 2012 to May 2013, we collected blood from 13 immature Kemp's ridley turtles captured in the Pine Island Sound region of the Charlotte Harbor estuary. Nine turtles were sampled immediately after or during the red tide events (bloom group) while four turtles were sampled between the events (non-bloom group). Plasma was analyzed for total brevetoxins (reported as ng PbTx-3 eq/mL), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, total protein concentration and protein electrophoretic profiles (albumin, alpha-, beta- and gamma-globulins). Brevetoxin concentrations ranged from 7.0 to 33.8 ng PbTx-3 eq/mL. Plasma brevetoxin concentrations in the nine turtles sampled during or immediately after the red tide events were significantly higher (by 59%, P = 0.04) than turtles sampled between events. No significant correlations were observed between plasma brevetoxin concentrations and plasma proteins or SOD activity, most likely due to the small sample size; however alpha-globulins tended to increase with increasing brevetoxin concentrations in the bloom group. Smaller (carapace length and mass) bloom turtles had higher plasma brevetoxin concentrations than larger bloom turtles, possibly due to a growth dilution effect with increasing size. The research presented here improves the current understanding of potential impacts of environmental brevetoxin exposure on marine turtle health and survival.  相似文献

Ingestion of non-food items/mouthing behavior results in exposure of children to contaminants in soil/dust. We characterize the prevalence of such behaviors in healthy children. The relative frequency of such behaviors was assessed by parent interviews for 533 children age 1 to 6. Thirty-eight percent of children put soil in their mouths at least monthly, 24% at least weekly, and 11% daily. High-risk behavior decreased quickly for children aged 2 or more, but was still reported at least monthly by 3 to 9% of parents of children up through age 6. Highest outdoor object mouthing rates occur among 1-year-old children, who are reported to play daily in sand/dirt and have generally high levels of mouthing. Such children may have higher soil/dust ingestion and higher exposure to contaminants when soil/dust contains lead or other agents. These high-risk groups may help focus educational interventions and/or risk assessments.  相似文献

Soil ingestion rates calculated using a tracer-based mass balance approach may carry considerable study errors, insensitivities, and “artefacts” of analysis that result in significant uncertainty. These same soil ingestion rates are often used as surrogates for dust ingestion rates. Therefore, a more direct and mechanistic method was developed to estimate soil and dust ingestion rates. The soil and dust ingestion rates were calculated using measures of: particle loading to indoor surfaces; fraction transferred to the hands; hand surface area; fraction of hand surface area that may be mouthed or contact food; frequency of hand-to-mouth events, amount dissolved by saliva; and exposure time. Adapted specifically for the Canadian context, estimated mean indoor dust ingestion rates range from 2.2 mg/d for teenagers to 41 mg/d for toddlers; mean soil ingestion rates range from 1.2 mg/d for seniors to 23 mg/d for children. Combined soil and dust ingestion rates ranged from 3.8 mg/d for seniors to 61 mg/d for toddlers. These ingestion rates are lower than values adopted by most agencies. These ingestion rates are mechanistic, can be adjusted on a site-specific basis, can be modified into an hourly rate and are presented as a more realistic alternative to traditional mass balance approaches.

A lot of research has been devoted to explaining immigrants' acquisition of the language of the receiving country. However, less attention has been paid to explaining the acquisition of the heritage language among children of immigrants. The most important determinant for young children is exposure to the language. Language exposure can occur in various contexts, such as within the family, during preschool, through peers or via media. Our empirical analysis therefore explores which of these contexts is most statistically significant for the acquisition of the heritage language among children of Turkish immigrants. Using data from the project Preschool Education and Educational Careers among Migrant Children, we show that all contexts are important at different age levels but the acquisition of the heritage language is mainly determined by the exposure to it within the family.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the impact of children's participation in a five-day humane education summer-camp program on the quality of their relationships with and treatment of companion animals. We measured changes from pre- to post-program in 77 children (50 girls, 27 boys) aged 6–12 years. The program promoted positive interactions between children and animals in natural settings, with a focus on either companion animals or farm/forest animals. The Companion Animal Bonding Scale, the Pet Friendship Scale, the Comfort from Companion Animal Scale, the Children's Treatment of Animal Questionnaire, and a drawing task were administered to children prior to the beginning of the camp on day one and again at the end of day five. Overall, the results showed that after five days of humane education in summer camp, children reported sharing significantly closer bonds and friendships with their companion animals. These results were more pronounced for girls versus boys, among younger (aged 6 to 8 years) versus older (aged 9 to 12 years) children, and among children receiving the companion-animal versus farm/forest-animal curriculum. Older boys reported significantly lower scores on the humane treatment of their companion animals, compared with younger boys, and both older and younger girls. Comparisons by type of curriculum also suggested that the humane education curriculum that focused on farm/forest animals resonated more with the girls versus the boys. The implications for camp- and classroom- based humane education programs are discussed.  相似文献

Learning to read takes time and it requires explicit instruction. Three decades of research has taught us a good deal about how children learn about the links between orthography and phonology during word reading development. However, we have learned less about the links that children build between orthographic form and meaning. This is surprising given that the goal of reading development must be for children to develop an orthographic system that allows meanings to be accessed quickly, reliably and efficiently from orthography. This review considers whether meaning-related information is used when children read words aloud, and asks what we know about how and when children make connections between form and meaning during the course of reading development.  相似文献

Schizophrenia can be discovered in pre-school children by observation of: Social indifference; uneven and intermittent motor or physical development; irregularity in speech development with tendency toward infantile speech; early fear of falling or rising, giving way to obsession with jumping and falling; excessive interest in spinning toys and circular motility; and preoccupation with body periphery—hands, feet and hair.When the physician observes these symptoms, or is consulted about them by the parents, clinical appraisal in consultation with a pediatric psychiatrist will usually suffice for diagnosis. Personal RF exposimetry has been in the focus of the bioelectromagnetics community in the last few years. With a few exceptions, exposimetry studies focused on adults, because measuring the exposure of children, one of the most important target groups, introduces many complications.The main feature of our study is to select teachers and kindergarten caretakers as volunteers. They are expected to receive similar exposure patterns as the children because they spend the workday close to them. Thus they can stand as proxies for estimation of exposures of children.Volunteers belonging to one of two groups (elementary school teachers, n = 31; employees of kindergartens and day nurseries, n = 50) in Hungarian cities received a Personal Exposimeter (PEM) for 24 h each. Only workdays, when the volunteers worked near children, were considered. 51 additional volunteers (office workers) were measured as controls.The volunteers wore the PEMs on their bodies. Those activities marked in the exposure diaries as work were further classified into 5 categories based on the level of certainty that they actually worked near children during that activity. Subsets of the full dataset were derived and compared based on this categorization.It was found that relaxation of the selection criteria often under- or overestimates exposure. The differences of estimation depend on the frequency band and sub-population: the kindergarten and teacher groups differ in this regard. For most frequency bands the majority of data points was below the detection limit. Derived child exposures are comparable to the worktime exposure of adults (control group).  相似文献

We investigated whether domestic and professional induction cooktops comply with the basic restrictions defined by the International Commission on Non‐Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Based on magnetic field measurements, a generic numerical model of an induction cooktop was derived in order to model user exposure. The current density induced in the user was simulated for various models and distances. We also determined the exposure of the fetus and of young children. While most measured cooktops comply with the public exposure limits at the distance specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission (standard IEC 62233), the majority exceeds them at closer distances, some of them even the occupational limits. The maximum current density in the tissue of the user significantly exceeds the basic restrictions for the general public, reaching the occupational level. The exposure of the brains of young children reaches the order of magnitude of the limits for the general public. For a generic worst‐case cooktop compliant with the measurement standards, the current density exceeds the 1998 ICNIRP basic restrictions by up to 24 dB or a factor of 16. The brain tissue of young children can be overexposed by 6 dB or a factor of 2. The exposure of the tissue of the central nervous system of the fetus can exceed the limits for the general public if the mother is exposed at occupational levels. This demonstrates that the methodology for testing induction cooktops according to IEC 62233 contradicts the basic restrictions. In the United States, risk assessments that include sportsfish consumption often rely on default values derived by the USEPA. However, local, regional, and cultural differences can result in substantial differences in consumption rates, species of fish caught, parts of fish consumed, and fish preparation methods—all of which contribute to the extent of contaminant exposure. Because of these differences, site-specific data are important for the reliable prediction of exposure. This article reviews the types of information important to a risk assessor to enhance the applicability of the exposure assessment to the population being evaluated. It provides a method for setting priorities based on the sensitivity of the exposure assessment to each type of information. Consumption rate and parts of fish consumed are the most important information to obtain. This information should be obtained for each fish species consumed, and should be obtained for both children and adults. Body weight and exposure duration have the next level of priority, and cooking method has the lowest level of priority. Results from surveys should be presented in a manner that allows the reader to understand the variability observed in the data and the survey questions that were asked. Correlations between variables should be evaluated and presented.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to estimate the daily exposure to lead due to food ingestion, air inhalation, and soil ingestion in the Republic of Korea's general population, and to evaluate the level of risk associated with the current lead exposure level using the proportional daily dose (3–4 μg/kg body weight/day) corresponding to the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) suggested by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives as the toxicological tolerance level. The estimation of the daily exposure to lead via three pathways including food, soil ingestion and air inhalation was conducted as a chronic exposure assessment. For the lead exposure assessment through dietary intake, 1,389 lead residue data for 45 commodities investigated by the Korea Food and Drug Administration during the period 1995–2000 were utilized (KFDA 1996, 1997, 1998). Six hundred seventy-two air monitoring data from 7 major cities during the period 1993–2000 and 4,500 soil residue data at 1,500 sites during the period 1999–2001 were considered for the lead exposure assessment involving air inhalation and soil ingestion, respectively. The total daily exposure to lead was estimated by combining dietary intake, inhaled amount and soil intake corresponding to the typical activity of the general population, which was treated as a group of adults with a body weight of 60 kg. For risk characterization, the daily exposure to lead was compared with the toxicological tolerance level. The level of risk due to lead exposure was calculated using the hazard ratio (HR). The dietary intake of lead was 9.71 × 10?4 mg/kg/day and the total daily exposure level, including air inhalation and soil ingestion, was 9.97 × 10?4 mg/kg/day. The exposure contributions of foods, air and soil induced from the percentage of each media to the total daily exposure were 97.4%, 2.1% and 0.5%, respectively. Of the different commodity groups, the highest contribution to the total exposure came from grain, which represented 47.7% of the total. Additional exposure to lead occurs in certain population groups due to the use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and the intake of other foods, all factors not considered in this study. Through the comparison of the daily exposure to lead with the tolerance level based on the PTWI, the hazard ratio was estimated as being 0.25–0.33. This value implies that no increase in blood lead level is to be expected in the general population at the current lead exposure levels.  相似文献
