The effect of temperature and hypoxic acclimation on the haemoglobin system and intraerythrocytic organic phosphate concentrations in the South African mudfish, Labeo capensis, have been investigated. Exposure to hypoxia or increased temperature raised haemoglobin concentration and decreased NTP/Hb ratio. Temperature acclimation did not effect the oxygenation characteristics of the haemolysate or haemoglobin multiplicity, as evident from isoelectric focussing experiments that showed one cathodic (Hb I) and three anodic haemoglobins (Hb II, III and IV). Oxygen equilibria of the isolated components showed a smaller Bohr effect and lower temperature and organic phosphate sensitivities in the cathodic than in the anodic haemoglobins. Unlike the trout and eel haemoglobin systems, both the anodic and cathodic haemoglobins from L. capensis exhibited sensitivity to organic phosphates but the effect was smaller in the latter. The results indicate that oxygen transport in mudfish blood is supported by variations in the red cell organic phosphate\haemoglobin ratio and the functional differentiation between anodic and cathodic haemoglobins.  相似文献

The morphological characteristics of Synbranchus marmoratus female germ cells in various development stages were described in details; then measurements of ovarian follicle diameters were taken from primary and secondary growth as during these development stages the oocyte size varied considerably along the fish growth. The results were correlated to total fish length, using the individuals division in six size classes. It was possible to group oocytes by stages according to histological characteristics but not according to morphometric diameter, as there was a wide variation in diameter in each stage and overlap between different maturation stages. These data make available new information on the reproductive biology of Synbranchidae.  相似文献

The swamp eel, Synbranchus marmoratus, is a freshwater protogynic diandric species. Primary males develop directly as males while secondary males arise from the sex reversal of females. Fishes from Argentine and Brazil inland waters were collected, examined and compared for this study. In order to characterize the interstitial testicular compartment, light and electron microscopy techniques and an enzyme histochemical examination for steroidogenic cells detection were used. The interstitial compartment of S. marmoratus is composed of Leydig and myoid cells, collagen fibers, blood cells, macrophages, and amyelinic nerves. At the ultrastructural level, no differences were observed in the interstitial tissue, either between specimens from the different sampling sites or between primary and secondary males. Leydig cells are present in all testes examined throughout the year. A cytoplasmatic reaction of 3beta-HSD was detected only in Leydig cells during sex reversal and in both type of males, mainly during the regressed and early maturation classes (autumn and winter). Leydig cells possess the typical fine structural characteristics associated with steroidogenesis. Furthermore, in both type of males, during sex reversal and after the spawning period, the number of granulocytes and macrophages present in the testes increased, suggesting that they could be involved in phagocytosis and resorption of damaged cells.  相似文献

The present study analyzes the respiratory responses of the neotropical air-breathing fish Hoplosternum littorale to graded hypoxia and increased sulfide concentrations. The oxygen uptake (VO2), critical O2 tension (PcO2), respiratory (fR) and air-breathing (fRA) frequencies in response to graded hypoxia were determined for fish acclimated to 28 degrees C. H. littorale was able to maintain a constant VO2 down to a PcO2 of 50 mm Hg, below which fish became dependent on the environmental O2 even with significant increases in fR. The fRA was kept constant around 1 breath h(-1) above 50 mm Hg and increased significantly below 40 mm Hg, reaching maximum values (about 4.5 breaths h(-1)) at 10 mm Hg. The lethality to sulfide concentrations under normoxic and hypoxic conditions were also determined along with the fRA. For the normoxic fish the sulfide lethal limit was about 70 microM, while in the hypoxic ones this limit increased to 87 muM. The high sulfide tolerance of H. littorale may be attributed to the air-breathing capability, which is stimulated by this compound.  相似文献

Antarctic fish, such as the Trematomus bernacchii, living at −1.9°C maintain a serum osmolality of around 600 mOsm kg−1, nearly twice that of temperate fish. Upon warm acclimation, Antarctic fish significantly lower their serum osmolality. It has been suggested that this response to warm acclimation is due to stress. The purpose of this study was to determine, whether upon warm acclimation there was a change in the levels of the stress hormone cortisol and hematocrit associated with the decrease in serum osmolality. T. bernacchii were warm acclimated up to 4 weeks and serum osmolality, cortisol and hematocrit were measured. Upon warm acclimation to +1.6 and +3.8°C over the course of 4 weeks, T. bernacchii significantly lowered their serum osmolality (from 547 ± 4 mOsm kg−1 to 494 ± 6 and 489 ± 4 mOsm kg−1, respectively), yet did not alter their serum cortisol (29 ± 6 nl ml−1) or hematocrit (22 ± 1%) levels. These results suggest that warm acclimation does not induce a stress response in T. bernacchii.  相似文献

Synopsis The mangrove forest fishRivulus marmoratus (Cyprinodontidae) has frequently been observed out of water, a phenomenon generally attributed to habitat drying. We tested the hypothesis that hydrogen sulfide, a substance characteristically found in their environment, can serve as a stimulus for emersion. In the field we foundR. marmoratus in water with low to moderate levels (<250 ppb) of HS. In the laboratory,R. marmoratus leaped from water contaminated with H2S at ecologically relevant concentrations (median response at 123 ppb). Aquatic hypoxia did not induce emersion, but prey capture did. Oxygen consumption by both juveniles and adults decreased significantly in air (27 and 25%, respectively). Our results suggest that avoidance of H2S and the ability to survive terrestrial conditions enable this species to permanently occupy an area of the forest unavailable to other fishes. Furthermore, because a variety of stimuli lead to etriersion inR. marmoratus, terrestriality in this species is likely a generalized response to environmental stress as well as a means of exploiting terrestrial resources.  相似文献

We have developed a gas exchange simulation system (GESS) to assess the quality control in measurements of metabolic gas exchange. The GESS simulates human breathing from rest to maximal exercise. It approximates breath-by-breath waveforms, ventilatory output, gas concentrations, temperature and humidity during inspiration and expiration. A programmable motion control driving two syringes allows the ventilation to be set at any tidal volume (V T), respiratory frequency (f), flow waveform and period of inspiration and expiration. The GESS was tested at various combinations of V T (0.5–2.5 l) and f (10–60 stroke · min−1) and at various fractional concentrations of expired oxygen (0.1294–0.1795); and carbon dioxide (0.0210–0.0690) for a pre-set flow waveform and for expired gases at the same temperature and humidity as room air. Expired gases were collected in a polyethylene bag for measurement of volume and gas concentrations. Accuracy was assessed by calculating the absolute and relative errors on parameters (error = measured−predicted). The overall error in the gas exchange values averaged less than 2% for oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output, which is within the accuracy of the Douglas bag method. Accepted: 4 June 1998  相似文献

Synopsis Parental behavior of the substrate-brooding cichlid, Biotodoma cupido, was studied in a small creek entering the lower Essequibo River, Guyana, where the freshwaters are affected by semi-diurnal tides. Physico-chemical variables of the tidal cycle were associated with the parental behavior of B. cupido. During late ebb and early flood tides, while off-spring were nest dependent, parents displayed intense aggression toward brood predators, mainly characins. At low tide, when the concentration of dissolved oxygen decreased to about 4 mg 1–1 and that of free carbon dioxide increased to 28 mg 1–1, parents entered a state of somnolence and brood predators vanished. Early flood tide brought an immediate and dramatic reversal of hypoxic and hypercarbic conditions and an associated renewal of aggressive and predatory activity. At very low tide, parents orally transferred the brood to a secondary nest depression in deeper water. The significance of water-level fluctuation to the evolution of this behavior, as well as that of parent-brood itineracy and the related phenomena of oral incubation and movable nests, is discussed.  相似文献

Synbranchus marmoratus, is a protogynic diandric species in which two types of males, primary and secondary, are found. In both types, the germinal compartment in the testes is of the unrestricted lobular type, but in secondary (sex reversed females) males the lobules develop within the former ovarian lamellae. In the present study, the germinal compartment was examined in both types of males using light microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Germinal compartment is limited by a basement membrane and contains Sertoli and germ cells. During maturation, processes of Sertoli cells form the borders of spermatocysts containing isogenic germ cells. Characteristically, type A and type B spermatogonia have a single nucleolus and grouped mitochondria associated with dense bodies or nuage. Type B spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids are joined by cytoplasmatic bridges and are confined within spermatocysts. Secondary spermatocytes are difficult to find, indicating that this stage is of short duration. Biflagellated spermatozoa have a rounded head, no acrosome, and possess a midpiece consisting of two basal bodies, each of which produces a flagellum with a typical 9+2 microtubular composition. No associations occur between sperm and Sertoli cells. There were no differences between spermatogenesis in primary and secondary males in this protogynic, diandric fish.  相似文献

The respiratory responses to increasing temperature and progressive hypoxia were examined relative to temperature acclimation in the nonindigenous, brown mussel, Perna perna (Mytilidae) from the Gulf of Mexico. When oxygen uptake rate (V?O2) was recorded at near full air O2 saturation, rate-temperature curves for Texas specimens of P. perna were sigmoidal, V?O2 generally increasing with increasing temperature but becoming suppressed as temperatures approached 10 and 30 °C, corresponding closely to this species' incipient thermal limits. At each tested temperature, V?O2 did not differ among individuals acclimated to 15, 20, or 25 °C. Lack of thermal acclimation was also reflected in acclimatory Q10 values>1.0 (range=1.34-2.14) recorded across acclimation groups at test temperatures equivalent to acclimation temperature. Low acute respiratory Q10 values in all acclimation groups across 15-20 °C indicated a limited capacity for thermal regulation of V?O2 within this temperature range. The ability of P. perna to regulate O2 uptake with progressive hypoxia was temperature-dependent, increasing from poor O2 regulation at 10 °C to good regulation at 30 °C. The O2 regulatory ability of P. perna and other open-water mytilids in declining O2 concentrations does not greatly differ from that of estuarine heterodont bivalves, suggesting that it is not a major factor preventing open-water species, such as P. perna, from invading estuarine environments. However, P. perna's inability to regulate O2 uptake at temperatures>25 °C combined with its relatively low upper thermal limit of 30 °C will likely prevent it from establishing permanent estuarine populations on Gulf of Mexico shores.  相似文献

The archaeogastropod Haliotis iris possesses paired bipectinate gills and normally four to six shell holes. In still water, endogenous water flow entered the branchial chamber anteriorly to the left of the head and was exhaled primarily from the three most posterior holes. The first or second anterior aperture was occasionally weakly inhalant. Cardiac interaction superimposed an oscillatory component upon ciliary ventilation but did not augment mean flow. At normal endogenous flow rates 49% of oxygen was extracted from the branchial flow, increasing to 71% at lower flows. In still water, normoxic was 0.47 μmol g−1 h−1. Oxyregulation occurred down to with partial oxyregulation down to 45 Torr (P crit), and oxyconformity below this. The oxyregulatory plateau was absent in artificially ventilated animals but normoxic was higher (0.65 μmol g−1 h−1). Endogenous ventilation was unaffected by hypoxia to 15 Torr. Heart rate decreased by ~20% at 26 Torr before falling more steeply. Oxygen uptake from the branchial ventilation stream fully accounted for normoxic In hypoxia (<30 Torr), no uptake occurred from the head or foot despite extensive eversion of the epipodium. Blood oxygen measurements excluded the right mantle as a significant gas exchange organ. Changes in oxygen uptake caused by changes in the velocity of external water currents support the concept of induced ventilation and suggest that in still water aerobic respiration was ventilation-limited. Although ciliary ventilation appears adequate to support resting aerobic metabolism, induced ventilation may provide increased aerobic scope for activity and repayment of oxygen debt. The fish genus Astyanax is widespread throughout the Neotropical region and is one of the most species-rich genera of the Characiformes. Cytogenetic studies of Astyanax have revealed marked intra- and interspecific diversity, with the identification of various species complexes. In this report, we describe the karyotypic structure of two sympatric species of Astyanax (Astyanax sp. and Astyanax aff. fasciatus) from the Middle Contas River basin in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. Both species had 2n = 48 but differed in their karyotypic formulae. Small heterochromatic blocks and multiple nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were identified in both species. Terminal CMA3+/DAPI signals were observed in Astyanax sp. and A. aff. fasciatus, mostly coincident with NORs. These results show that chromosomal markers can be used to identify species in this fish complex. These markers can provide useful information for evolutionary studies and investigations on the mechanisms of chromosomal diversity in Astyanax.  相似文献

Henneguya curimata n. sp. (Myxozoa, Myxobolidae) is described from the kidney of the teleost Curimata inormata collected in an estuarine region of the Amazon River, near Belém. Brazil. This myxosporean produces large cysts (0.6-1.2 mm in diam.) that represent plasmodia containing all life cycle stages, including spores. The spore body is ellipsoidal (approximately 16.6 microm in length and approximately 6.2 microm in width), and each valve presents a tapering tail (approximately 19.1 microm in length). These valves surround the binucleate sporoplasm cell and two ellipsoidal polar capsules located side-by-side at the same level, measuring 6.5 x 1.2 microm each and containing 10-11 coils of the polar filament. On the basis of its host specificity and on data collected by light and electron microscopy, the organism, H. curimata n. sp. is distinguished as a new species. The taxonomic affinities and morphological comparisons with other similar species of the same genus are discussed.  相似文献

How fish oxygen consumption is modulated by external PO2 has long been a matter of interest, yet is an experimentally complicated question to answer. In this study closed and semi-closed respirometry were used to evaluate the oxygen consumption rate of the scaleless galaxiid fish, inanga (Galaxias maculatus) as a function of decreasing external PO2. Both respirometry techniques showed that as environmental oxygen levels declined, oxygen consumption rates also decreased. At no point did inanga regulate oxygen consumption. This is strong evidence that inanga is an oxyconformer. Partitioned respirometry experiments showed that skin plays an important role in oxygen uptake in this fish species, and cutaneous oxygen uptake may have an important role in shaping the oxygen consumption response to hypoxia.  相似文献

Synbranchus marmoratus is a protogynous diandric teleost fish widely distributed throughout South America. The aim of this work was to study the ultrastructure of the vitelline envelope and the relationship among oocyte and their follicular cells during oogenesis. During perinucleolar stage, the oocyte and the follicular cells form microvillar processes that project into the perivitelline space. The oocyte secretes a dense and amorphous material, which appears as the first evidence of the vitelline envelope (VE) development. The VE passes from a double to a multilayered structure during oocyte growth. In mature oocytes, the VE reach a mean thickness of 11 microm, having up to 30 layers. Oocyte microvilli are thinner than the follicular ones and were seen in contact with the follicular plasmalema, however we could not find any contact between the follicular microvilli and the oolemma. Before ovulation, microvillar processes retract and the pore canals seem to collapse. An outer electron dense layer occludes the superficial pore and forms a continuous layer. No jelly or adhesive coatings were seen at least in ovulated eggs sampled from ovarian lumen. Follicular cell and oocyte cytological characteristics do not differ from those described in other teleosts species.  相似文献

The giant burrowing cockroach, Macropanesthia rhinoceros, is endemic to north-eastern Australia and excavates a permanent burrow up to 1m deep into soil. Using flow-through respirometry, we investigated gas exchange and water loss at three different oxygen tensions (21%, 10% and 2% at 20 degrees C) and temperatures (10, 20 and 30 degrees C at 21% oxygen). M. rhinoceros employ cyclic gas exchange (CGE) making the species by far the largest insect known to engage in discontinuous ventilation. CGE featured rhythmic bursts of CO(2) dispersed among inter-burst periods of reduced output. CGE was most commonly observed at 20 degrees C and degraded at <10% oxygen. Mild hypoxia (10% oxygen) resulted in a lengthening of the burst period by approximately two-fold; this result is complementary to oxygen consumption data that suggests that the burst period is important in oxygen uptake. When exposed to severe hypoxia (2% oxygen), CGE was degraded to a more erratic continuous pattern. Also, during severe hypoxia, total water loss increased significantly, although CO(2) release was maintained at the same level as in 21% oxygen. During CGE, an increase in temperature from 10 to 20 degrees C caused both water loss and CO(2) output to double; from 20 to 30 degrees C, CO(2) output again doubled but water loss increased by only 31%.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to report the presence of a three non‐native hybrid long‐whiskered catfishes (family Pimelodidae) in the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil. Genetic analyses demonstrated that the three presumptive hybrids were a result of the crossbreeding of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (central Amazonas River basin and Lower Paraná River) and Leiarius marmoratus (Amazonas, Essequibo and Orinoco rivers), producing a hybrid commonly known in Brazil as cachandiá. The potential threat to biodiversity, due to possible genetic contamination, competition and predation of wild stocks, of such artificially produced hybrid fishes is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The development and activity of the basophils in the meso-adenohypophysis of Anopthichthys jordani were studied in relation to the maturation of the gonads. In addition, pituitaries and ovaries of post-spawning females were studied during a period 0–11 days subsequent to spawning. The large and mainly PAS-positive basophilic cells in the meso-adenohypophysis were the only cell type that showed a correlation with the development and maturation of the ovaries and testes. These cells were subjected to a partial or complete degranulation in females following oviposition, when yolk formation in the ovary was at a maximum. It is concluded that the large PAS-positive basophils in the mesoadenohypophysis have a gonadotropic function and that only one gonadotropic cell type is present in the adenohypophysis of Anoptichthys jordani. This study was partly supported by a grant from the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (Z.W.O.).I wish to express my gratitude to Prof. Dr. P. G. W. J. van Oordt for his active interest and constructive suggestions. Mr. R. van den Hurk and Miss Tjitske van Soelen provided valuable assistence in the course of the experiments. Mr. H. van Kooten made the photographs. Special thanks are due also to Mr. M. J. van Oosterum and Mr. J. Rowaan; without their capable and constant help it would have been hardly possible to obtain such satisfactory spawning results.  相似文献

Summary The autonomic nervous and possible adrenergic humoral control of blood pressure and heart rate during hypoxia was investigated in Atlantic cod. The oxygen tension in the water was reduced to 4.0–5.3 kPa (i.e.. PwO2=30–40 mmHg), and the fish responded with an immediate increase in ventral and dorsal aortic blood pressure (P va P da), as well as a slowly developing bradycardia. The plasma concentrations of circulating catecholamines increased during hypoxia with a peak in the plasma level of noradrenaline occurring before the peak for adrenaline. Bretylium was used as a chemical tool to differentiate between neuronal and humoral adrenergic control of blood pressure and heart rate (f H) during hypoxia. The increase in P va and P da in response to hypoxia was strongly reduced in bretylium-treated cod, which suggests that adrenergic nerves are responsible for hypoxic hypertension. In addition, a small contribution by circulating catecholamines to the adrenergic tonus affecting P va during hypoxia was suggested by the decrease in P va induced by injection of the -adrenoceptor antagonist phentolamine. The cholinergic and the adrenergic tonus affecting heart rate were estimated by injections of atropine and the -adrenoceptor antagonist sotalol. The experiments demonstrate an increased cholicholinergic as well as adrenergic tonus on the heart during hypoxia.  相似文献
