APPLICATIONS OF SENSORY SCIENCE WITHIN THE HOME CARE BUSINESS

Sensory evaluation methods and procedures originally developed for the food and beverage industry are also utilized to conduct evaluations of products for furniture and floor care, laundry care, air care, and insect control. In addition to measuring sensory properties and dealing primarily with “the other senses,” home care product evaluations incorporate assessments of perceived performance as the product interacts with a substrate. Consequently, laboratory evaluations employ a variety of controlled usage conditions — each having specific physical requirements, and evaluations of total performance are conducted under multi-environmental conditions with product users. This presentation examines how traditional sensory methods have been modified and expanded to accommodate the multidimensional aspects of home care products and R&D decisionmaking.     

APPLICATIONS OF SENSORY SCIENCE WITHIN THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY

Sensory testing of cigarette smoke presents some unique problems to the sensory specialist. This is due to a variety of reasons including the high degree of similarity between blended cigarettes and a high degree of variability between individual cigarettes. In the cigarette industry, a large effort has been placed on adapting and developing new methods of collecting and analyzing sensory-data on both flavorants and cigarette smoke. These methods include odor profiling and multidimensional scaling based on attributes and acceptability scales. In addition, extensive research has been conducted to determine the number of relevent dimensions to smoking and the types of changes that could affect consumer acceptance or purchase behavior.     

GRAPHICAL APPLICATIONS IN THE ANALYSIS OF CROSSOVER DESIGNS IN FOOD SENSORY STUDIES

Graphs useful in exploratory data analysis for checking assumptions and evaluating treatment, sequence, and period effects in a linear model from a crossover design are discussed. In particular, a two-period, two-treatment crossover design of a food sensory study is used to illustrate the applications of these graphs.

DETECTION AND INTERPRETATION OF VARIATION WITHIN AND BETWEEN ASSESSORS IN SENSORY PROFILING

In this paper we discuss methods that can be used to evaluate the performance of sensory panels. In particular we concentrate on detection of variation within and among panelists. A systematic presentation of some simple, graphically oriented tools will be given. Interpretation aspects of the tools will be emphasized. The methods will be illustrated by computations from a sensory experiment based on 4 sausage products. The example demonstrates how the tools can be used to evaluate the reproducibility of the assessors and also how they can be used to detect different types of individual differences among the assessors.     

SENSORY PROPERTIES OF THE CHLORO-ANISOLES

The olfactory properties,-‘strength’, character,and odor threshold values ofthe series of chlorinated anisoleshas been studied. 2,3,4,6-, 2,4,6-, 2,3,6- and 2,6-chloroanisoleare shown to have a strongly musty odour and low thresholds,whereas the other compoundsare less musty and weaker. Thesechemicals with a 2,6- chlorination are shown to have a pronouncedfatiguing effect.     

THE PROBLEM OF PERSONAL MEDICAL ADVERTISEMENT

It seems to be difficult or impossible for some persons to distinguish the difference between imparting useful information concerning health matters to the public, and advertising their own particular abilities. In the practice of medicine, which from its very essence must forever be impregnated with humanitarianism, self-exploitation can find no justification if one has due regard for the imperfections of medical science and for the ability of others. There is no man, no group of men, so possessed of medical knowledge that they should be blinded to a realization of their own insufficiency.     

STUDIES OF THE PURPLE HERON,PART 2: BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS

Some aspects of Purple Heron Ardea purpurea behaviour have been covered although the study is not complete. Further observations are needed, especially on pair formation, nest building and copulation. Many of the displays described for the Ardeidae are clearly homologous and only slight differences exist. The throat puffing component in the Aggressive Upright Display appears unique to A. purpurea as does the clappering and sudden retraction of the neck in the Stretch Display. Birds raised in captivity provided valuable information on agonistic behaviour patterns and the behaviour of young.
