Examination of children at the beginning of school education showed that their autonomic regulatory mechanisms were stressed to various degrees, correlated with the rate of energy consumption in cells, which determines their performance and the adaptability to the adverse environment of Western Siberia. Most children displayed initial moderate or high sympathetic hypertonia (35 and 10% of children examined, respectively); in contrast, 26% of first graders were vagotonic. The highly stressed state of the regulatory mechanisms manifested itself as an unfavorable hypersympathicotonic type of autonomic reactivity. This was accompanied by certain cytochemical changes, mainly, a compensatory activation of succinate dehydrogenase, the degree of which depended on the degree of its inhibition. An optimum state of the regulatory mechanisms was found in only 29% of children, and 44% of them displayed a rather stressed state of energy-producing processes, threatening to disturb adaptive processes and the autonomic equilibrium.  相似文献

Abstract

We assessed the impact of a year-long, school-based humane education program on younger (first and second graders) and older (fourth and fifth graders) children's attitudes toward the treatment of animals. Generalization to human-directed empathy was also measured. Using a pretest-posttest design and ANCOVA, we found that the program enhanced the animal-related attitudes of children differentially, depending on grade level. For younger children, there was no significant difference between experimental (E) and control (C) group attitude means; however, qualitative analysis showed that greater enhancement of attitudes occurred for first grade E group children than for C group children at that grade level. No differences were present on the generalization measure of empathy. For older children, there was a significant difference between E and C group attitude means qualified by grade level—there was greater enhancement of humane attitudes for E group than for C group fourth graders but no difference for fifth graders. On the generalization measure of empathy, posttest means for the E group were significantly greater than means for the C group regardless of grade level. The results contribute to the growing literature on the relation between children and animals and serve to encourage and validate the efforts of humane educators to improve children's caring and kindness toward companion and noncompanion animals.  相似文献

Autonomic regulation and mental activity were studied in first-grade 7-year-old children under the Middle Ob climatic conditions. The study disclosed some features peculiar to adaptive alterations in children’s organisms and revealed both the degree of tension of the regulatory systems and changes in mental activity that described the “cost” of adaptation to school studies. Adaptation to school process depended on alteration of the regulatory mechanisms which had different expression at certain school periods and on changes in the relationship between sympathico-parasympathetic effects and the central regulation system, which were accompanied by different changes in mental activity. The adaptation mechanisms in most northern children were rather tense due to the unfavorable climatic effect on their organism.  相似文献

Background

To evaluate relationships between traumatic symptoms and environmental damage conditions among children who survived the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

Methods

The subjects were 12,524 children in kindergartens, elementary schools, and junior high schools in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The Post Traumatic Stress Symptoms for Children 15 items (PTSSC-15), a self-completion questionnaire on traumatic symptoms, was distributed to the children and a questionnaire regarding environmental damage conditions affecting the children was distributed to their teachers. Of 12,524 questionnaires distributed, an effective response was obtained from 11,692 (93.3%).

Results

The PTSSC-15 score was significantly higher in females than in males among 4th to 6th grade students in elementary schools and among junior high school students. In terms of traumatic symptoms and environmental damage conditions, with the exception of kindergartners, children who had their houses damaged or experienced separation from family members had a significantly higher PTSSC-15 score than children who did not experience environmental damage. Except for kindergartners and 4th- to 6th-grade elementary school students, children who experienced evacuation had a significantly higher PTSSC-15 score.

Conclusions

This study demonstrated relationships between traumatic symptoms and environmental damage conditions in children who had suffered from the disaster. Factors examined in studying the relationship between environmental damage conditions and traumatic symptoms were gender, age, house damage, evacuation experience, and bereavement experience. It was critical not only to examine the traumatic symptoms of the children but also to collect accurate information about environmental damage conditions.  相似文献

Visuospatial competencies are related to performance in mathematical domains in adulthood, but are not consistently related to mathematics achievement in children. We confirmed the latter for first graders and demonstrated that children who show above average first-to-fifth grade gains in visuospatial memory have an advantage over other children in mathematics. The study involved the assessment of the mathematics and reading achievement of 177 children in kindergarten to fifth grade, inclusive, and their working memory capacity and processing speed in first and fifth grade. Intelligence was assessed in first grade and their second to fourth grade teachers reported on their in-class attentive behavior. Developmental gains in visuospatial memory span (d = 2.4) were larger than gains in the capacity of the central executive (d = 1.6) that in turn were larger than gains in phonological memory span (d = 1.1). First to fifth grade gains in visuospatial memory and in speed of numeral processing predicted end of fifth grade mathematics achievement, as did first grade central executive scores, intelligence, and in-class attentive behavior. The results suggest there are important individual differences in the rate of growth of visuospatial memory during childhood and that these differences become increasingly important for mathematics learning.  相似文献

Soil bacteria need to adapt quickly to changes in the environmental conditions. Physiological adaptation plays an important role in microbial survival, especially under stressful conditions. Here the abilities of chemicals and pesticides to modulate physiological adaptive and cross-protective responses, that make the bacteria more resistant to oxidative stress, are examined in the soil bacterium and phytopathogen, Xanthomonas. The genetic basis for the observed stress resistance, as well as the regulatory mechanisms controlling gene expression during the process, has begun to be elucidated.

Immigration has dramatically changed the face of the nation in the last thirty years, yet it is unclear how children currently define “Americanness” in light of these demographic and cultural shifts. This research explores how elementary students define what it means to be American in the context of immigration-driven diversity. Based on a survey of fourth and fifth graders in an elementary school located in a high-immigrant community, the author shows that despite the diversity of the school and local surroundings, and the multicultural ideology espoused by school staff, students predominately defined “American” in ethnocultural terms – specifically, as white, US-born, and English-speaking. At the same time, a small group of students challenged this narrative and defined Americans in pluralist terms. This study suggests that schools aiming to create inclusive learning communities in an increasingly diverse nation may need more direct approaches to teaching a culturally pluralist model of America.  相似文献

In an attempt to devise a methodology for characterizing children's intuitive theories of drug action, 217 children in Grades 1 to 6 were interviewed about how two substances, alcohol and cocaine, cause behavioral changes in their users. Measures tapped both structure (Piagetian complexity of causal reasoning, coherence, and construction of a causal explanatory framework with nodes, links, and causal mechanisms) and content (a relevant biological ontology, mastery of propositions in a scientifically correct theory of drug action, and reliance on alternative theoretical models). Scores on all measures increased with age, especially between first and second grade and third and fourth grade. Growth between third/fourth and fifth/sixth grades was more evident for cocaine, the less familiar of the two substances. Measures of structure and content were correlated. Overall, elementary school age children appear capable of framing causal explanations of drug action and possess relevant biological knowledge, particularly about the central role of the brain in mediating the effects of drugs on behavior. It remains to be seen whether programs guided by an intuitive theories perspective and designed to increase children's understandings of how drugs alter behavior can contribute meaningfully to drug prevention efforts.  相似文献

Discrepant events are often used by science educators to incite interest and excitement in learners, yet sometimes their results are farther-reaching. The following article describes how one such event—dissolving packing peanuts in acetone—led to a change in the course of a college-level elementary science teaching methods class and to the development of an inquiry-based lesson plan appropriate for use with fifth graders. The lesson is aligned to the NGSS ideas around helping children use observations of properties to describe materials and modeling scientific phenomena that are too small to observe with the naked eye.  相似文献

Analyses of nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort revealed that children born to unmarried women scored lower than children of married women on math tests in kindergarten and first grade. This pattern was most attributable to associated differences in family income and parent education, and it was moderated by women's marital and relationship statuses after having their children. A study was made of the adaptation of the cardiac pump function in children of early school age to change in their physical activity associated with the transition from preschool to elementary school. Children of the experimental group, who engaged in physical exercise daily over the first school year, developed so-called bradycardia of training, which enhanced the tendency of the heart rate to decrease with age. The level of bradycardia attained in the first school year was retained over the two subsequent years, despite a considerable decrease in the amount of physical activity in this period. Daily exercising significantly increased the stroke volume, which remained at a high level even after the daily exercising program was stopped. Children of the control group participated only in physical activities of the regular physical education program. Their heart rate remained unchanged over the first two school years. At the beginning of the third year, a decrease in the heart rate and a rise in the stroke volume were observed, as expected of their age.  相似文献

Based on the complex analysis of the data of cardiointervalographic (CIG) and rheoencephalographic (REG) examination of 37 healthy children and 63 children suffering from bronchial asthma (BA), we identified the most informative indices characterizing reactions of the cardiovascular system under conditions of an active orthostatic test (coefficient of autonomic responsiveness and index of responsiveness of the vessels). We conclude that the relation between the values of these indices allows one to identify the level of strain of the regulatory mechanisms and the state of the adaptation systems of the organism, which determine the adequacy of control of the autonomic sphere. The following gradations can be classified: an optimum level, compensated adaptation disorders (strain and overstrain of the regulatory mechanisms), and decompensated adaptation disorders (exhaustion of the regulatory mechanisms and failure of adaptation). Among clinically healthy children, we found a risk group (about 30%) with manifestations of lowering of the organism’s adaptive abilities. It is shown that groups of healthy children and children suffering from BA differ from each other in the shares of different patterns of EEG and variants of EEG responses to a hyperventilation test. Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of EEG in children, despite high interindividual variability, clearly correlate with the state of adaptation processes. The expedience of a complex approach in estimating the adaptation ability of the child based on the data of CIG, REG and EEG examinations is discussed. Under environmental stresses, plant development is adaptively modulated. This modulation is influenced by the steady-state balance (homeostasis) between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phytohormones. Frequently observed symptoms in plant stress adaptation responses include growth retardation, reduced metabolism and photosynthesis, reallocation of metabolic resources and increased antioxidant activities to maximize plant survival under adverse environmental conditions. In view of stress-induced morphogenetic changes during adaptation, ROS and auxin are the main players in the regulatory networks because both are strongly affected by exposure to environmental cues. However, the mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between ROS and auxin are poorly understood. In this review, we aim at surveying how the integration of environmental stress-related signals is modulated by crosstalk between ROS and auxin regulatory networks.  相似文献

High soil salinity negatively influences plant growth and yield. Some taxa have evolved mechanisms for avoiding or tolerating elevated soil salinity, which can be modulated by the environment experienced by parents or offspring. We tested the contribution of the parental and offspring environments on salinity adaptation and their potential underlying mechanisms. In a two-generation greenhouse experiment, we factorially manipulated salinity concentrations for genotypes of Medicago truncatula that were originally collected from natural populations that differed in soil salinity. To compare population level adaptation to soil salinity and to test the potential mechanisms involved we measured two aspects of plant performance, reproduction and vegetative biomass, and phenological and physiological traits associated with salinity avoidance and tolerance. Saline-origin populations had greater biomass and reproduction under saline conditions than non-saline populations, consistent with local adaptation to saline soils. Additionally, parental environmental exposure to salt increased this difference in performance. In terms of environmental effects on mechanisms of salinity adaptation, parental exposure to salt spurred phenological differences that facilitated salt avoidance, while offspring exposure to salt resulted in traits associated with greater salt tolerance. Non-saline origin populations expressed traits associated with greater growth in the absence of salt while, for saline adapted populations, the ability to maintain greater performance in saline environments was also associated with lower growth potential in the absence of salt. Plastic responses induced by parental and offspring environments in phenology, leaf traits, and gas exchange contribute to salinity adaptation in M. truncatula. The ability of plants to tolerate environmental stress, such as high soil salinity, is likely modulated by a combination of parental effects and within-generation phenotypic plasticity, which are likely to vary in populations from contrasting environments.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the relationship between relative weight and school attendance among elementary schoolchildren. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 1069 fourth to sixth graders from nine elementary schools in the inner city of Philadelphia, PA, were part of an ongoing randomized control trial to assess prevention strategies for obesity. The mean rate of students eligible for free/reduced meals was 82.9 ± 11.5%. Weight was measured in the second semester of the academic year. Absentee data for the entire academic year were recorded by homeroom teachers. Participants were classified into relative weight categories described by the Institute of Medicine: underweight, normal‐weight, overweight, and obese. Results: ANOVA showed that overweight children were absent significantly more than normal‐weight children (12.2 ± 11.7 days vs.10.1 ± 10.5 days) (p < 0.05). Linear regression showed that the obese category remained a significant contributor to the number of days absent even after adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, and gender. Discussion: These data suggest that in addition to the medical and psychosocial consequences of being overweight, heavier children have greater risk for school absenteeism than their normal‐weight peers. As the rate of childhood obesity increases, parallel increases in school absenteeism should be expected.  相似文献

The functional status of the central nervous system (CNS), the character of the regulation of the heart rhythm, and general operative efficiency were studied in 96 five-, six-, and seven-year-old children working with a personal computer (PC). The study revealed certain age-specific features in the childrens' physiological reactions to this work: five-year-old children differed significantly from their six–seven-year-old counterparts both in their basal physiological status and in their reactions to working with a PC. Five-year-olds also displayed the least favorable time of the CNS functional parameters and operative efficiency (60% of these children displayed various signs of fatigue). Similar age-specific features were also found in the regulation of the heart rhythm while working with a PC. In spite of the fact that 58% of all the children examined showed an optimal strength of their autonomic regulatory mechanisms, a highly stressed state of the regulation of the heart rhythm was observed in 21 and 28% of five-year-old children before and after working with a PC, contrasted with 10–16 and 17–25% in six- to seven-year-old children, respectively. It was concluded that the physiological and hygienic norm setting for children working with a PC should consider the five-year-olds as a separate group.  相似文献

The study aimed at optimizing the functional state (FS) of anxious six- to eight-year-old children showed that integrated use of physical exercises of a mainly aerobic character, relaxation training, respiratory exercises, and functional music is more effective in the long-term aspect than selective use of these means. Only physical exercises exert a marked influence in the FS of six- to eight-year-old anxious children under a stressful informational load. The use of other means of optimizing the FS appears to be less effective. The high effectiveness of physical exercises is determined by adaptive changes in the mechanisms of FS regulation in anxious children. Apparently, long-term adaptation to an adequate muscular activity ensures improved functioning of, and a better interaction between, the activating and inactivating structures of the modulating brain system located at different levels of the CNS, in particular, in the frontal cortical areas. It is emphasized that the peculiarities of the influence of different means of regulation of the FS on the body of anxious elementary school children are, largely determined by the immaturity of the frontothalamic regulatory system and the specifics of the functional organization of the limbic brain structures.  相似文献
