Habitats in agroecosystems are ephemeral, and are characterized by frequent disturbances forcing pest species to successively colonize various hosts belonging either to the cultivated or to the uncultivated part of the agricultural landscape. The role of wild habitats as reservoirs or refuges for the aphid Sitobion avenae that colonize cultivated fields was assessed by investigating the genetic structure of populations collected on both cereal crops (wheat, barley and oat) and uncultivated hosts (Yorkshire fog, cocksfoot, bulbous oatgrass and tall oatgrass) in western France.Classical genetic analyses and Bayesian clustering algorithms indicate that genetic differentiation is high between populations collected on uncultivated hosts and on crops, revealing a relatively limited gene flow between the uncultivated margins and the cultivated part of the agroecosystem. A closer genetic relatedness was observed between populations living on plants belonging to the same tribe (Triticeae, Poeae and Aveneae tribes) where aphid genotypes appeared not to be specialized on a single host, but rather using a group of related plant species. Causes of this ecological differentiation and its implications for integrated pest management of S. avenae as cereals pest are discussed.  相似文献

The genus Diabrotica includes a large number of pest species, including some of the most important crop pests of the Americas. The parasitoid Centistes gasseni Shaw is the first braconid to be described parasitizing Diabrotica in South America, and high natural infestations are reported. Field and experimental observations on the host range, distribution and biology of this parasitoid are described. Centistes gasseniwas collected in southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, in a region comprising humid lowlands and highlands, and cool temperate to warm subtropical climates, with regular rainfall in excess of 1300 mm. Three Diabroticaspecies, D. limitata (Sahlberg), D. speciosa (Germar) and D. viridula (Fabricius) were found to host the parasitoid, with mean percent parasitism of 5.4, 2.0 and 1.0%, respectively. Diabrotica speciosa and D. viridula are the two most important pest Diabroticaspecies in South America. Laboratory experiments with field-collected beetles and parasitoid cocoons indicated that C. gasseni overwinters in adult host beetles, remaining dormant in its live host below developmental temperatures. A potential distribution of C. gasseni in North America is proposed based on its known climatic range and the distribution of the main pest species of adult overwintering North American Diabrotica.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of the tephritid pest Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) is a controversial subject, mainly because of misinterpretation of the observed genetic variation. In this work, the different karyotypes and DNA polymorphism of a geographically defined population from Northeastern Argentina were studied, using derived stocks maintained in the laboratory during 25 generations. The karyotypes were analyzed using C-banding and N-banding techniques, while DNA analysis was performed through the DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The variants isolated from both the wild Montecarlo population and the derived laboratory stocks were fully compatible and are present in other wild populations from South Brazil (lat 31 degrees 30' S) to Mid-Argentina (lat 34 degrees 30' S). Single-pair crosses among stocks carrying different chromosomal variants demonstrated the absence of isolation barriers. The polymorphic fragments isolated by RAPDs/PCR showed polymorphisms among stocks whereas the analysis of rDNA ITS1 exhibit a unique ITS1 length. Our results seem to indicate that all the examined variants belong to a single species with extended polymorphism and therefore do not support the hypothesis that the extended chromosomal polymorphism in A. fraterculus implies the existence of a complex of cryptic species.  相似文献

A study was made of the resistance of three wild potato species, Solanum chacoense, S. stoloniferum and S. demissum, to three aphid species, namely Myzus persicae (Sulz.), Aulacorthum solani (Kalt.) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), which all commonly infest the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum. The resistance of each Solanum species differed with the species of aphid, with the part of the plant and with the physiological condition of the leaf. As a result, it may be difficult to utilize such resistance, since it is ineffective against some of the pest aphid species and may break down as the physiological condition of the plant changes.  相似文献

The Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov), is an economically important pest of small grains. Since its introduction into North America in 2003, Russian wheat aphid Biotype 2 has been found to be virulent to all commercially available winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L., cultivars. Our goal was to examine differences in Russian wheat aphid reproduction and development on a variety of plant hosts to gain information about 1) potential alternate host refuges, 2) selective host pressures on Russian wheat aphid genetic variation, and 3) general population dynamics of Russian wheat aphid Biotype 2. We studied host quality of two wheatgrasses (crested wheatgrass, Agropyron cristatum [L.] Gaertn., and intermediate wheatgrass, Agropyron intermedium [Host] Beauvoir) and two types of winter wheat (T. aestivum, one Biotype 2 susceptible wheat, 'Custer' and one biotype 2 resistant wheat, STARS02RWA2414-11). The susceptible wheat had the highest intrinsic rate of increase, greatest longevity and greatest fecundity of the four host studied. Crested wheatgrass and the resistant wheat showed similar growth rates. Intermediate wheatgrass had the lowest intrinsic rate of increase and lowest fecundity of all tested hosts.  相似文献

The movement of predators and parasitoids between natural and cultivated habitats is a common process in agroecosystems, which may be affected by different biotic and abiotic factors, mostly related to the availability of resources. Here, through a broad approach, we aimed to obtain an overview of factors affecting the bidirectional movement of aphid parasitoids (Braconidae: Aphidiinae) across cultivated habitats and their natural vegetated borders. Using bidirectional flight traps, we measured the number of parasitoids moving from borders to crops and vice versa, in fields of three common crop species (alfalfa, oat and wheat) in the Pampean region, Santa Fe, Argentina. The effects of the abundance of aphid prey, abundance and richness of flowers in both habitats, as well as temperature and wind speed on parasitoid movement, were assessed through generalized mixed models, considering sampling date and field as random factors. The relationship between parasitism percentages and parasitoid movement from the borders to the crops was explored separately for three pest aphid species: Aphis craccivora Koch, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani). Overall, we found a prevalence of parasitoids moving in the border-crop direction, mainly in wheat and alfalfa crops. Aphid abundance in the arrival habitat affected parasitoid movement in both directions. A link between parasitoid movement and parasitism percentages was observed for the aphid species S. graminum in wheat, suggesting a beneficial role of natural vegetation in pest control.  相似文献

Soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae), is a severe pest of soybeans in North America. Soybean aphid populations cycle between a secondary summer host, where populations reproduce parthenogenetically and a primary host, where populations overwinter as eggs. In North America, the secondary host is soybean, and the primary hosts are Rhamnus cathartica L. (Rhamnaceae) and R. alnifolia L'Her. A location with abundant populations of soybean aphid on R. cathartica was identified near Guelph, Ontario, Canada, in October 2004, and eggs on trees were counted at multiple sites within that location each autumn and spring over the next 2 yr. Dynamics of naturally occurring soybean aphid populations on the primary host were assessed with respect to (1) decline of overwintering eggs from autumn to spring, (2) development of spring populations on R. cathartica, and (3) development of soybean aphid populations on soybean immediately adjacent to overwintering sites. Counts of aphid eggs declined by approximately 70% between autumn and spring sampling periods in 2004-2005. Significant differences in counts of aphid eggs relative to sampling height were observed in the canopy of R. cathartica. No edge effects were observed in the development of soybean aphid populations in soybeans adjacent to overwintering sites in this study. Very few eggs were collected at the same study location in the autumn of 2005, and no aphid eggs were collected from samples taken in the spring of 2006. Egg counts taken in the autumn of 2006 were intermediate in number relative to counts taken in the autumn of 2004 and 2005.  相似文献

Lepidopteran stemborers are amongst the most important insect pests of maize, sorghum and sugarcane in sub-Saharan Africa. With the exception of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), which was accidentally introduced into Africa, the other stemborer pests are indigenous to the continent and have co-evolved with native grasses and sedges. In addition to pest species, wild habitats harbour diverse non-economic stemborer species, some of which are new to science. However, the diversity and distribution of both non-economic and pest species of stemborer are currently mostly unknown in Botswana. Accordingly, country-wide surveys were conducted during 2014/15 and 2015/16 austral summer to determine species diversity and distribution in cultivated and wild host plants of stemborers in Botswana. A total of 1597 stemborer larvae and 228 pupae were collected, constituting 63.1 and 36.9 larvae and 84.8 and 15.2% pupae from cultivated versus wild habitats, respectively. In addition to C. partellus, Sesamia calamistis Hampson and Eldana saccharina Walker which were previously reported, 12 more stemborer species were recorded for the first time in Botswana, including nine undescribed species. These species were from the Sciomesa, Sesamia and Conicofrontia genera and Tortricidae and Pyralidae families. Fourteen wild host and two cultivated host plant species of stemborers were recorded. Chilo partellus was most abundant (89.5%) in cultivated habitats whilst E. saccharina (33.6%) was most abundant in wild habitats. Stemborer species diversity was higher in wild habitats than cultivated. Current results highlight the significance of wild, especially wetland habitats for ecological functions and conservation of lepidopteran stemborer biodiversity.  相似文献

Green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), does not overwinter outdoors in Minnesota; it arrives each spring on low-level jet streams from the south. After arrival, anholocylic reproduction occurs on numerous herbaceous species, including many common weeds, before movement to potato, Solanum tuberosum L. In investigating aphid feeding behavior on barrier crops, we observed winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L., colonized by green peach aphid. The Northern Great Plains grows 94,000 ha of potatoes and 20.5 million ha of small grain cereals each year, the latter potentially providing an early emerging and widely distributed green peach aphid host to influence early season potato colonization. Life tables statistics indicated green peach aphid had its highest reproductive potential among cereals on winter wheat, with rye (Secale cereale L.) > barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) > oats (Avena sativa L.). Green peach aphid was found to colonize barley, rye, and winter wheat, but not oats. Mean generation time, net reproductive rate, doubling time, and finite rate of increase were significantly different between host plants. Electrical penetration graph technique indicated mean nonpenetration duration by green peach aphid was significantly different among plant species, and significantly longer on winter wheat than on the other cereals. Mean xylem phase duration was not significantly different among plant species but sieve element salivation was of longest duration on potato. Phloem sap ingestion (E2) was also significantly different among plant species with longest E2 duration on winter wheat. This study demonstrates that this aphid can effectively use key cereals at the vegetative stage.  相似文献

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is a new pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., in North America. It has become widespread on soybean in North America since it was first identified in the Midwest in 2000. Species of Rhamnus L. (buckthorn) are the primary hosts of A. glycines, and soybean is known as a secondary host. There is limited information about the secondary host range of A. glycines. Aphid colonization on various legume hosts was compared in choice experiments. Aphid colonization occurred on species in the genus Glycine Wild. No colonization occurred on Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet, Lens culinaris Medik, Phaseolus vulgaris L., Pisum sativum L., or species of Vicia L. and Vigna Savi. Colonization was limited or aphids were transient on species of Medicago L., Phaseolus L., and Trifolium L. There were significant differences in aphid colonization among Medicago truncatula accessions with numbers ranging from 7 to 97 aphids per plant. Six Glycine soja Sieb. & Zucc. accessions were as resistant as G. max accessions to A. glycines; these may represent novel sources of A. glycines resistance not found in G. max. Antibiosis was found to play a large role in the expression of resistance in three of the G. soja accessions. Results of this study indicated that G. max and G. soja were the best secondary hosts of A. glycines; however, its secondary host range may include other leguminous species. Therefore, A. glycines did not seem to have a highly restricted monophagous secondary host range.  相似文献

In Chile, the aphid Sitobion avenae is of recent introduction, lives on cultivated and wild Poaceae, and is thought to reproduce by permanent parthenogenesis. In order to study the genetic variability and population structure of this species, five microsatellite loci were typed from individual aphids collected from different cultivated and wild host plants, from different geographical zones, and years. Chilean populations showed a high degree of heterozygosity and a low genetic variability across regions and years, with four predominant genotypes representing nearly 90% of the sample. This pattern of low clonal diversity and high heterozygosity was interpreted as the result of recent founder events from a few asexually reproducing genotypes. Most geographical and temporal variation observed in the genetic composition resulted from fluctuations of a few predominant clones. In addition, comparisons of the genotypes found in Chile with those described in earlier surveys of S. avenae populations in Western Europe led us to identify 'superclones' with large geographical distribution and high ecological success, and to make a preliminary exploration of the putative origin(s) of S. avenae individuals introduced to Chile.  相似文献

The Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Homoptera: Aphididae), reproduces parthenogenetically in North America and must survive year-round on host plants, including in late summer when small grains are not in cultivation. During this time, cool-season perennial wheatgrasses (Poaceae: Triticeae) contribute substantially to aphid survival, crested wheatgrass (Agropyron spp.) particularly. In greenhouse studies, the number of aphids per plant was measured after four infestation periods on unvernalized and vernalized wheatgrasses. Before placement on these test plant species, aphids were reared either on winter wheat or on the grass host species on which aphid progeny were counted. On vernalized plants, aphids reared on wheat resulted in more aphids per test plant than when the aphids were reared on wheatgrasses, but on unvernalized plants the number of aphids per test plant did not differ significantly regardless of rearing host. Aphids on crested wheatgrass were similar in number to the other grasses when plants were unvernalized. However, when plants were vernalized, crested wheatgrass supported significantly more aphids than some of the other hosts. Aphid numbers increased on all test species as infestation period lengthened, and plant growth was largely unaffected by aphid feeding. These results suggest if sufficient moisture is available during summer when small grains are not in cultivation, all host species observed are capable of sustaining aphids. Crested wheatgrass is an abundant and important host of the Russian wheat aphid in its northern range of the western United States, but other less prevalent wheatgrasses also may contribute to aphid survival during late summer when small grains are not in cultivation.  相似文献

Replicated small plot field experiments were done at two sites growing winter oilseed rape (ADAS Boxworth, Cambridgeshire and ADAS High Mowthorpe, North Yorkshire) and two sites growing spring oilseed rape (ADAS Bridgets, Hampshire and ADAS Rosemaund, Herefordshire) to investigate the effect of cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) on crop yield and quality. All four sites were included in the first 2 yr of the experiment in 1994 and 1995 but only those with winter oilseed rape were continued into the final year in 1996. Plots were artificially inoculated with cabbage aphids at either five aphid 4 m-2 or 5 aphids 16 m-2 or left uninoculated to become naturally infested. In 1995 and 1996 the naturally infested treatment was omitted. Sprays of the aphicide pirimicarb at GS 3.3, 3.7, 4.5, 4.9 and 5.5 were used to manipulate aphid populations. Once a plot had been treated at a target growth stage it was sprayed on all subsequent occasions to prevent recolonisation. Aphid numbers were assessed prior to each spray date and their effect on the crop measured in terms of yield of seed and oil and glucosinolate content. Artificial inoculation of aphids was often successful in establishing different populations of the pest at a range of growth stages. Results showed that cabbage aphid sometimes reduced both crop yield and quality. Yield responses to insecticide treatment tended to be larger in spring oilseed rape than in winter oilseed rape mainly because it became more heavily infested at an early growth stage. Tentative thresholds are proposed for control of the pest in both winter and spring oilseed rape. It is stressed that cabbage aphid is a sporadic pest and rarely likely to reach these threshold levels in field crops.  相似文献

Humans are having a profound impact on the geographic distributions of plant populations. In crop species, domestication has been accompanied by the geographic expansion of cultivated populations relative to their wild ancestors. We used a geographical information system (GIS)-based approach to investigate differences in the environmental factors characterizing the geographic distributions of cultivated and wild populations of the Mesoamerican fruit tree Spondias purpurea. Locality data for 86 cultivated and 28 wild S. purpurea populations were used in conjunction with environmental data layers and Maxent, a maximum entropy application for predicting species distributions. Interpredictivity analyses and principal components analysis revealed that the predicted distribution of wild S. purpurea is nested within the cultivated distribution and that the ecological niche (defined by environmental characteristics) of cultivated S. purpurea has expanded relative to that of wild populations. Significant differences between wild and cultivated populations were detected for five environmental variables, corresponding to the expansion of S. purpurea during the domestication process from its native habitat in the Mesoamerican tropical dry forests into less seasonal habitats. These data suggest that humans have altered the range of habitats occupied by cultivated S. purpurea populations relative to their wild progenitors.  相似文献

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., native to Asia, has recently become a principal pest of this crop in many areas of North America. Insecticides are currently used to manage A. glycines, but host plant resistance is a potential alternative management tool. Tests were conducted to determine resistance to A. glycines among soybean lines. 'Cobb,' 'Tie-feng 8,' and 'Jackson' were resistant to population growth of A. glycines compared with 'Cook' and '91B91,' a susceptible control. Antibiosis was evident in Cobb, Jackson, and Tie-feng 8 from lowered survival of first generation A. glycines, and in Cobb, Jackson, Tie-feng 8, and 'Braxton' from diminished reproduction by first generation aphids. Antixenosis was apparent in Cobb and Jackson during initial infestation of aphid population growth tests, because A. glycines were unsettled and dispersed readily from placement points on unifoliolate leaves. Decreased nymphiposition by A. glycines occurred on Cobb and Jackson, and it may have been caused by antibiotic chemicals in these lines, failure of aphids to settle, or both. Differences in distribution of A. glycines between unifoliolate leaves and other shoot structures suggest that unifoliolate leaves were acceptable feeding sites on 91B91 and Cook, whereas unifoliolate leaves and other shoot structures were roughly equally acceptable feeding sites on Braxton, Tie-feng 8, Jackson, and Cobb. However, Jackson and Cobb had relatively low counts of A. glycines on shoots that may have been due to abandonment of plants by aphids, decreased aphid survival, or both. Results confirm earlier findings that Jackson is a strong source of resistance to A. glycines, and they suggest that Tie-feng 8, Braxton, and especially Cobb are potentially useful sources of resistance.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore the origin of the invasive Spartina densiflora by analysing samples from the native region (South America) and from a recently colonized area (California). A combination of various molecular data (chloroplast and nuclear sequences, molecular fingerprint) and ploidy level estimations was used to answer the question whether the reticulate phylogenetic pattern previously detected in S. densiflora was restricted to California, or alternatively, whether a more ancient hybrid origin preceded formation of this species in its native area. We found that this species is heptaploid in both its native and introduced range. Identification of nuclear homeologous sequences indicate that this species has a reticulate origin in its native range, involving a lineage related to the hexaploid clade formed by S. alterniflora, S.foliosa, and S. maritima, and another lineage related to the sub-Antarctic endemic S. arundinacea that provided the chloroplast genome. The samples from California displayed similar multilocus patterns to the samples from Chile, supporting the hypothesis that this species originated on the southeast American coast (Argentina), from where it eventually spread to the west coast of South America (Chile) first and to the Northern Hemisphere (California) later.  相似文献

The tropical root weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.), has been a pest of citrus and ornamental plants since its introduction into Lake County, FL, in 1964. Since then, it has colonized the Florida peninsula to the south of its point of introduction but has not expanded its range to the north. A lower threshold for oviposition by D. abbreviatus was estimated as 14.9 degrees C. Eggs were highly susceptible to cold, with 95% mortality (LTime95) occurring in 4.2 d at 12 degrees C. Relative susceptibility of life stages to cold was eggs > pupae > larvae > adults. Archived weather data from Florida were examined to guide a mapping exercise using the lower developmental threshold for larvae (12 degrees C) and the lower threshold for oviposition (15 degrees C) as critical temperatures for mapping the distribution of D. abbreviatus and the potential for establishment of egg parasitoids. Probability maps using the last 10 yr of weather data examined the frequency of at least 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 d per winter when soil temperature was 相似文献

In 1986, the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), became an invasive species of United States. Nearly 20 yr later, new biotypes appeared that were capable of overcoming most sources of resistance and became a renewed threat to wheat, Triticum aestivum L., production. Cyclical (CP) and obligate (OP) parthenogenesis enables aphids to both adapt to changing environments and exploit host resources. We documented these forms of reproduction for Russian wheat aphid in wheat and wild grasses in the Central Great Plains and Rocky Mountain regions during falls 2004-2009. Colonies from sample sites also were held under unheated greenhouse conditions and observed for the presence of sexual morphs and eggs through the winter. Russian wheat aphid populations were mainly OP and attempted to overwinter as adults, regardless of region sampled. A few populations contained oviparae but no males (gynocyclic) and were not specific to any particular region. Observation of the Russian wheat aphid colonies under greenhouse conditions failed to produce males or eggs. In spring 2007, CP was confirmed in a small population of Russian wheat aphid that eclosed from eggs (fundatricies) on wild grasses and wheat near Dove Creek, CO, in the Colorado Plateau region where other aphid species undergo CP. Lineages from ninety-three fundatricies were screened against 16 resistant and susceptible cereal entries to determine their biotypic classification. A high degree of biotypic diversity (41.4%) was detected in this population. Although CP was a rare in Russian wheat aphid populations, genetic recombination during the sexual cycle creates new biotypes and can have significant effects on population genetics.  相似文献
