In order to evaluate the effect of continuous, thorough vacuuming on house dust organisms and mite allergen, a cotton carpet was vacuumed every other day, six times in total. Seven weeks later, the carpet was cleaned by means of spray extraction. Samples were taken before and after this wet cleaning. In total 1150 g of dust was collected, containing approximately 174 000 arthropods (dead and alive) and 9000×106 fungal spores. In the course of the experiment, the amount of dust collected at each vacuuming decreased. The number of extracted house dust mites did not decrease significantly, but that of the predator miteCheyletus did. The number of extracted fungal spores showed a significant decrease (from 142 to 16×106 spores/m2 per minute vacuuming), as did the extracted mite allergen per m2. After 7 weeks the number of mite eggs and complete house dust mites had increased enormously. After cleaning by spray extraction another increase in the number of complete mites and mite eggs was found, while the amount of mite allergen was diminished. The population growth of the house dust mite between the 6th and the 7th vacuuming is probably due to the decrease of their most important predator,Cheyletus. After the wet cleaning a number of extra eggs hatched, probably due to the high humidity in the carpet. The procedures used in this study to combat house dust mites may have an adverse effect in the long run.  相似文献

Abstract. Species composition patterns and vegetation-environment relationships were quantified for high-elevation rock outcrops of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, an infrequent and insular habitat in a forested landscape. Outcrops occur over a wide geographic range encompassing extensive variation in both geology and climate. Geographic-scale factors interact with site-scale factors to produce variation in vegetation among outcrops. Similarly, site-scale factors interact with micro-scale factors to produce variation in vegetation within outcrops. To provide a quantitatively-based classification of outcrop vegetation we used a TWINSPAN analysis of 154 100-m2 plots. We recognized nine communities that primarily correspond to different combinations of elevation, bedrock type, geography, and moisture. Within outcrops of a single bedrock type, vegetation composition of 100-m2 plots was consistently correlated with elevation and solar radiation, but relationships to soil nutrients varied with bedrock type. Both site-scale (100 m2) factors (e.g. elevation, slope, aspect, and bedrock type) and plot-scale (1-m2) microsite factors (e.g. soil depth, vegetation height, soil nutrients) were strongly correlated with species composition at the 1-m2 level. Environment can be used to predict composition more effectively for 100-m2 plots on a single bedrock type than either across bedrock types or at a 1-m2 scale. Composition-environment relationships resemble those described for outcrop systems from other regions with pronounced topographic relief more than they do those described for the nearby but flatter and lower-elevation outcrops of the Southeastern Piedmont. There is strong spatial autocorrelation in this community, perhaps owing to dispersal limitation. Consequently, a comprehensive conservation strategy must include reservation of both a range of geologic types and a range of geographic locations.  相似文献

Trends in coral cover are widely used to indicate the health of coral reefs but are costly to obtain from field survey over large areas. In situ studies of reflected spectra at the coral surface show that living and recently dead colonies can be distinguished. Here, we investigate whether such spectral differences can be detected using an airborne remote sensing instrument. The Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (Itres Research Ltd, Canada) was flown in two configurations: 10 spectral bands with 1-m2 pixels and 6 spectral bands with 0.25-m2 pixels. First, we show that an instrument with 10 spectral bands possesses adequate spectral resolution to distinguish living Porites, living Pocillopora spp., partially dead Porites, recently dead Porites (total colony mortality within 6 months), old dead (>6 months) Porites, Halimeda spp., and coralline red algae when there is no water column to confuse spectra. All substrata were distinguished using fourth-order spectral derivatives around 538 nm and 562 nm. Then, at a shallow site (Tivaru) at Rangiroa Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), we show that live and dead coral can be distinguished from the air to a depth of at least 4 m using first- and fourth-order spectral derivatives between 562–580 nm. However, partially dead and recently dead Porites colonies could not be distinguished from an airborne platform. Spectral differences among substrata are then exploited to predict the cover of reef substrata in ten 25-m2 plots at nearby Motu Nuhi (max depth 8 m). The actual cover in these plots was determined in situ using quadrats with a 0.01-m2 grid. Considerable disparity occurred between field and image-based measures of substrate cover within individual 25-m2 quadrats. At this small scale, disparity, measured as the absolute difference in cover between field and remote-sensing methods, reached 25% in some substrata but was always less than 10% for living coral (99% of which consisted of Porites spp.). At the scale of the reef (all ten 25-m2 quadrats), however, disparities in percent cover between imagery and field data were less than 10% for all substrata and extremely low for some classes (e.g. <3% for living Porites, recently dead Porites and Halimeda). The least accurately estimated substrata were sand and coralline red algae, which were overestimated by absolute values 7.9% and 6.6%, respectively. The precision of sampling was similar for field and remote-sensing methods: field methods required 19 plots to detect a 10% difference in coral cover among three reefs with a statistical power of 95%. Remote-sensing methods required 21 plots. However, it took 1 h to acquire imagery over 92,500 m2 of reef, which represents 3,700 plots of 25 m2 each, compared with 3 days to survey 10 such plots underwater. There were no significant differences in accuracy between 1-m2 and 0.25-m2 image resolutions, suggesting that the advantage of using smaller pixels is offset by reduced spectral information and an increase in noise (noise was observed to be 1.6–1.8 times greater in 0.25-m2 pixels). We show that airborne remote sensing can be used to monitor coral and algal cover over large areas, providing that water is shallow and clear, and that brown fleshy macroalgae are scarce, that depth is known independently (e.g. from sonar survey).  相似文献

Summary Six progeny trials that included 147 half-sib progenies of maize (Zea mays L.) population ESALQ PB-5 were conducted for the purpose of studying plot size and its consequences in recurrent selection programs. The progenies were evaluated in three 7x7 duplicate simple lattice experiments using one-row plots of 5 m2. At harvest each plot was partitioned into five sub-plots (sampling units), and data was collected from each sampling unit. At the same time and place the same progenies were evaluated in three 7x7 duplicate simple lattice experiments using 1-m2 (linear row with 5 plants) plots. Data were collected for plant and ear height, ear diameter, total ear weight, and total grain yield. The data were combined by using adjacent sampling units, and the analyses were performed by considered five plot sizes in addition to those of the independent trials with 1-m2 plots. The experiments with 1-m2 plots were less efficient in discriminating for yield traits among progenies than those with 5-m2 plots. The combination of plot size and number of progenies evaluated indicated that an optimum plot size for yield was between 3 and 4 m2, or 15–20 plants per plot. With such sizes the expected gain was maximized for the four replications used in this study. If the total area covered by each progeny is constant, the maximum gain from selection, however, is attained by decreasing plot size and increasing the number of replications. The minimum size of plots is, however, limited by practical or theoretical criteria. Plot size affected the estimates of additive genetic variance, coefficient of heritability, and genetic coefficient of variation for all of the traits. No practical limitation was observed for conducting experiments with 1-m2 plot.  相似文献

Abstract. Several researchers have hypothesized that plant species richness has a unimodal relationship with biomass, while others have argued for a linear relationship. Data from various types of herbaceous communities show some support for the unimodal hypothesis, but this has not been tested extensively for forests and questions remain concerning its generality. We used linear and quadratic regression models to examine the relationship between overstory biomass and richness in a coastal Maine Quercus-Pinus forest across and within cover types using data from two plot sizes (2500-m2 quadrats and 625-m2 sub-quadrats). Understory data from 1-m2 plots were also analysed. Richness was quadratically related to biomass at both plot sizes for all cover types combined, but the amount of variation explained by the models was very low (R2s < 0.09). Richness and biomass were not significantly related at either plot size for the mixed mesic cover type, the most common type in the forest. The best fit (R2= 0.43) was obtained with a quadratic model for the conifer cover type at the sub-quadrat level, with the quadratic model for the 1-m2 data having the second highest R2 (0.24). Across all six data sets, the quadratic model was the only one with a significant fit in two cases, and had considerably higher R2s (1.3–1.9 ×) in two others. The remaining two data sets could not be fit with a significant model of either type. For this forest, these results suggest little support for a linear relationship between plant species richness and biomass and variable, often weak, support for a unimodal relationship. Density, a potentially confounding variable in this type of analysis, was only weakly correlated with richness and was not found to alter the relationship between biomass and richness.  相似文献

House dust mites (HDM) have been shown to produce allergens causing atopic allergies in human beings, known in medicine as house-dust-mite allergy or atopy. Over the past 25 years (1981–2006) a survey of dust samples from different places was made in the southern part of Poland, to determine the diversity of indoor acarofauna. In total, 1,532 samples were taken from dwellings, hospitals, libraries, research laboratories, drug-stores, and offices and other workplaces. More than 30 mite species were found of which the most abundant and common were HDM, especially Dermatophagoides farinae. Highest mite densities (g?1 dust) were noted in dwellings. This survey revealed differences in the occurrence and prevalence of various species of domestic mites between and within (dwellings in) geographical areas. This knowledge may be useful in the field of forensic medicine.  相似文献

Abstract. We investigated changes in the composition and abundance of understory species after fire in the southern boreal forest around Lake Duparquet, Québec. Ten plots of 100 m2 were sampled in each of eight sites varying in post-fire age from 26 to 230 yr, with 20 1-m2 quadrats in each of these 80 plots. Variation in the understory was described by DCA ordination and interpreted as a regeneration succession series. Thickness of the organic layers, stand age and canopy composition were all correlated with vegetational change. This change was not constant throughout succession; some old sites showed an increase in the diversity and abundance of certain pioneer species. This was partly related to openings in the canopy resulting from a major outbreak of spruce budworm, which affected sites dominated by Abies balsamea. The ordinations were performed on both the 100-m2 plots and the 1-m2 quadrats. Heterogeneity within sites was larger at the 1-m2 scale and there was a great deal of overlap in the position of the quadrats in ordination space. At the smaller scale of analysis, stand age and thickness of the organic layers were not correlated with the changes observed in the understory.  相似文献

We developed a nested vegetation sampling protocol to sample the plant diversity on south-facing cliffs and cliff bases in Jefferson County, Colorado. The multi-scale plots included three nested spatial scales, 1 m2, 20 m2, and 40 m2. We compared plant species richness and species diversity among large cliffs, medium cliffs, small cliffs, and non-cliff sites using Hill's diversity numbers (N 0, N 1, and N 2) for the 1-m2 quadrats. Species richness (N 0) was calculated for the 20-m2 and 40-m2 plots. Our results indicate that plant species diversity on the cliff faces did not increase with increasing cliff area. This pattern was consistent at all three sampling scales. A model selection was run to determine if plant species diversity values on the cliff faces were associated with cliff variables. None of the cliff variables measured were good predictors of diversity at the 1-m2 scale. However, at the 20-m2 scale, canyon differences and a positive relationship with increasing cliff surface roughness explained 70% of the variability in species richness. Although most plant species sampled on the cliff faces were also found in the base plots, 13 species were sampled only on the cliff faces. Additionally, dry south facing cliffs support a mix of xeric and mesic plants indicating that cliffs may provide unique microenvironments for plant establishment. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pollen transport into houses via clothing was studied on different types of fabrics after clothing was aired or worn outdoors. After walking through grassland, 68 pollen grains/cm2 were found on clothes (tape samples). The amount of grass pollen, and especially pollen from insect-pollinated plants, increased from the shirt towards the shoes. The amount of pollen on clothes aired outdoors in a yard depended on the concentration in the ambient air and the texture of the fabrics. On vacuumed samples, 1.2 grains/cm2/h adhered to the furry fabric of fleece and wool, whereas only 0.3 grains/cm2/h adhered to a tight weave polyamide coat and a denim jacket. A moist cotton shirt gave slightly higher pollen counts in both the tape (8.6 grains/cm2/h) and the vacuumed samples (1.0 grains/cm2/h) compared to a dry shirt (5.6 and 0.6 grains/cm2/h), but the difference was not significant. Tape samples gave tenfold higher pollen numbers compared to vacuumed samples, probably due to the more optimal location of the tape sampling area on top of the shoulders. We conclude that clothing constitutes an important route for carrying allergenic pollen into houses. Pollen transport can be decreased by shaking outdoor clothing before entering a residence. In our case, shaking removed 68% pollen grains from trousers.  相似文献

The determination of mite numbers in dust samples depends on the effectiveness of the sampling procedure. We report on mite isolation from dust samples by flotation distinguishing between living and dead mites. The results are varied and unreproducible; ageing processes are of relevance in the case of dead mites. Living mites can be determined more reliably when using mite mobility. Two methods based on this principle, the mobility test and the heat escape method, are described and discussed. In the case of a natural analogous mite development on carpets, mite numbers ranging from 80 000 to 200 000 mites per m2 are found after approx. 3 months. It is shown that the mobility of different mite species varies. The mobility test allows the detection of mites in textile objects, and shows how mites are distributed over these objects. It is demonstrated how the infestation of clothes by mites can be determined.  相似文献

Stored product mites can often infest stored products, but currently there is little information regarding the efficacy of pesticides that can be used for control. In this study we evaluated several common pesticides formulated from single active ingredients (a.i.) or commercially available mixtures (chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, beta-cyfluthrin, and a combination of deltamethrin and S-bioallethrin), plus an acaricide composed of permethrin, pyriproxyfen and benzyl benzolate, for efficacy against Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, and Aleuroglyphus ovatus. The pesticides were incorporated into the mite diets in a dose range of 10–1000 μg a.i. g−1 diet. Concentrations for suppression of 50 and 90% population growth and eradication (rC0) of mites were fit to linear regression models. None of the tested pesticides gave complete eradication of A. siro, which was the most tolerant of the three mite species tested. The most effective pesticide Allergoff 175 CS was a combination product (a nano-capsule suspension of permethrin, pyriproxyfen and benzyl benzolate) labeled for dust mites, with rC0 range of 463–2453 μg a.i. (permethrin) g−1 diet depending on the species. Least effective were chlorpyrifos and deltamethrin.  相似文献

Summary The presence of house dust mites and storage mites in dumpsters was investigated in 3 different areas of Venice hinterland. The aim of this study was to find a relationship between some reported respiratory symptoms among 6 workers who were responsible for moving the dumpsters to the truck and the bio-aerosol released from such operation. These symptoms were closely related to the work and after allergological evaluation we found sensitisation to house dust mites in all 6 employees. The mine exposure in the workplace was assessed by a standardized sampling and analysis of dust obtained after brushing the inside surfaces of dumpsters. In 50% of the specimens (10/20) we found mites belonging to the following families: Pyroglyphidae (Dermatophagoides spp.), Acaridae (Acarus siro) and a lower amount of Cheyletidae (Cheyletus spp.). An indirect test (guanine test) was also performed and gave positivity in 16 dust samples (80%). The insides of dumpsters showed to be an optimal environment for mites survival and reproduction because of cracks and grooves on the walls, the high humidity level and the presence of mould. These mites probably come from dwelling places and other environments (markets, slaughters-houses, farms, etc.). This suggests that mites allergens can be released during rubbish discharging from the dumpsters and represent a possible risk for the employees.  相似文献

Allergenic mites are responsible for inducing hypersensitive reactions in genetically predisposed people worldwide. Mites in dust from 30 Irish homes with pets (dogs, n = 23; cats, n = 7) were compared with those in 30 homes without pets. House dust mites constituted 78% of all mites recorded, with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Acariformes: Pyroglyphidae) representing 57–72% of mites in furniture and mattresses in both home types compared with only 22% of mites in pet beds. Although storage mites accounted for just 13% of all mites recorded, they represented 46% of mites recorded in pet beds. Median levels of the dust mite allergen Der p 1 (µg/g) in dust samples from mattresses in homes without pets were significantly greater than in mattresses from homes with pets, reflecting the greater densities of D. pteronyssinus found in the former home category. Mite species richness was greater in homes with pets (17 species) than in homes without pets (13 species). This suggests that although the presence of pets can result in a wider variety of epidemiologically important mite species within households, increased competition among mite species may result in a more balanced mite fauna in the home, inhibiting the dominance of any one species and hence lowering allergen‐associated risks.  相似文献

A prevalence study was conducted among office workers in Malaysia (N= 695). The aim of this study was to examine associations between asthma, airway symptoms, rhinitis and house dust mites (HDM) and cat allergy and HDM levels in office dust. Medical data was collected by a questionnaire. Skin prick tests were performed for HDM allergens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae) and cat allergen Felis domesticus. Indoor temperature and relative air humidity (RH) were measured in the offices and vacuumed dust samples were analyzed for HDM allergens. The prevalence of D. pteronyssinus, D. farinae and cat allergy were 50.3%, 49.0% and 25.5% respectively. Totally 9.6% had doctor-diagnosed asthma, 15.5% had current wheeze and 53.0% had current rhinitis. The Der p 1 (from D. pteronyssinus) and Der f 1 (from D. farinae) allergens levels in dust were 556 ng/g and 658 ng/g respectively. Statistical analysis was conducted by multilevel logistic regression, adjusting for age, gender, current smoking, HDM or cat allergy, home dampness and recent indoor painting at home. Office workers with HDM allergy had more wheeze (p= 0.035), any airway symptoms (p= 0.032), doctor-diagnosed asthma (p= 0.005), current asthma (p= 0.007), current rhinitis (p= 0.021) and rhinoconjuctivitis (p< 0.001). Cat allergy was associated with wheeze (p= 0.021), wheeze when not having a cold (p= 0.033), any airway symptoms (p= 0.034), doctor-diagnosed asthma (p= 0.010), current asthma (p= 0.020) and nasal allergy medication (p= 0.042). Der f 1 level in dust was associated with daytime breathlessness (p= 0.033) especially among those with HDM allergy. Der f 1 levels were correlated with indoor temperature (p< 0.001) and inversely correlated with RH (p< 0.001). In conclusion, HDM and cat allergies were common and independently associated with asthma, airway symptoms and rhinitis. Der f 1 allergen can be a risk factor for daytime breathlessness.  相似文献

Cross-ecosystem movement of nutrients and biomass can have important effects on recipient systems. Emerging aquatic insects are subsidies to terrestrial ecosystems and can influence foodweb interactions in riparian systems. In a 2-year field experiment, we simulated aquatic insect deposition by adding adult midge carcasses (150?g dry mass m?2 year?1) to 1-m2 heathland plots at a site with low natural midge deposition. We established four levels of midge-addition treatments and measured stable isotopes (??13C and ??15N) in plants and arthropods within each treatment. We used a multiple-source isotope Bayesian mixing model to estimate the terrestrial versus aquatic contribution to the diets of arthropods. Aquatic resources were incorporated into plant, detritivore, and predator biomass. Detritivorous Collembola showed the greatest difference in isotope values (+3??? ??15N and +4??? ??13C) between midge-addition and reference treatments. Isotope values of small spiders followed the same trend of enrichment as Collembola while other arthropods (mites and large spiders) were only enriched after 2?years of midge addition. Although predator diets did not change, they became isotopically enriched via their likely prey (Collembola). Plants also had elevated ??15N (+1???) in midge-addition treatments. The time required and amount of midge-derived C and N detected varied and depended on trophic position. Midge-derived nutrients were no longer present in arthropod biomass in the year following midge addition. Aquatic insect carcasses can be rapidly incorporated into terrestrial food webs in nearshore habitats, and repeated inputs can be detected at multiple trophic levels, thus highlighting the importance of the detrital pathway for aquatic to terrestrial cross-ecosystem subsidies.  相似文献

During the past few decades, house dust mites have attracted worldwide interest among medical entomologists and acarologists because of their importance in causing nasobronchial allergic disorders in human beings. House dust mites are present throughout the year; however, their relative densities differ in different seasons and habitats. Because the prevalence of house dust mite allergen is important epidemiologically and clinically, detailed knowledge on the seasonal abundance of important allergenic mites is of great importance for better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease. In view of this, a systematic survey was carried out on the prevalence of total mites and four common allergenic mites in the city of Kolkata for two consecutive years. Both bed and bedroom floor dust were collected separately from homes inhabited by asthmatic patients situated in different corners of the city on monthly basis from January 2004 to December 2005. The population levels of total mites and four common allergenic mites, namely Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. farinae, Austroglycyphagus geniculatus, and Blomia tropicalis separately, were highest during the pre-monsoon period (March–May), irrespective of habitat, whereas densities were low in all cases during winter (December–February). The study indicates that season had the most significant effect on the relative abundance of house dust mites except Dermatophagoides farinae, irrespective of habitat.  相似文献

House dust mites,Dermatophagoides species (Acari: Pyroglyphidae), produce allergens, known for the provocation of asthma and other allergic reactions. To determine the time needed for complete colonisation of a new house by house dust mites, dust samples were collected from carpets of houses varying from 2 weeks to 2 years in age. In contrast to the expectation, no relation was found between age of the houses on the one hand and average levels of mite-allergensDer pI andDer pII and mite numbers on the other. However, presence of dogs appeared to be positively related to allergen levels. Furthermore, carpets in bedrooms appeared to contain more allergens than carpets in living-rooms. Finally, the age of the mattress was not related to allergen levels of bedroom floors.  相似文献

Summary The Bz2 locus of Zea mays has been cloned, utilizing the presence of the transposable element Dissociation (Ds) at the locus as a gene tag. The Ds element inserted in the bz2-m allele was identified among many members of the Ac/Ds family in a Southern blot analysis of a population segregating for bz2-m and Bz2. After cloning a DNA fragment from the bz2-m allele, sequences flanking the Ds insertion were shown to be Bz2-specific and were used to isolate a homologous fragment from a wild-type Bz2 line. The Ds insertion in the bz2-m allele was found to be a Ds2 element identical to the Ds insertion in adh1-2F11.  相似文献

In this study, the airborne and dust-borne concentrations of endotoxin, (1,3)-β-d-glucan and five house dust allergens were measured in office, home, and outdoor environments both in New Haven, United States and Nanjing, China. Air samples were collected using a BioSampler at a flow rate of 12.5 l/min for 30 min. Dust samples were simultaneously collected using a surface sampler. Dust samples went through extraction and dilution before analysis, while air samples were analyzed directly. Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL) Pyrochrome and Glucatell assays were used to quantify endotoxin and (1,3)-β-d-glucan concentration levels, respectively. Enzyme-linked sorbent assay was used to measure the dust mites, cat, dog, and cockroach allergens. The experimental results indicated that endotoxin, (1,3)-β-d-glucan and allergen concentrations vary greatly both with samples and environments. In all tested environments, endotoxin concentration ranged from 0.8 to 83.7 ng/m3 for air, and 7.8 to 14.3 ng/mg for dust. (1,3)-β-d-glucan concentration ranged from 0.1 to 9.8 ng/m3 for air, and 6.6 to 110 ng/mg for dust. Cockroach allergens were detected only in New Haven office and outdoor environments, and other allergens ranged from 0.1 to 90 ng/mg for dust samples, and from 1.5 to 1,282 ng/m3 for air samples. In general, similar profiles of allergens and toxins were observed in New Haven and Nanjing environments. Linear regression analysis showed that there were better endotoxin and (1,3)-β-d-glucan linear correlations (R 2 = 0.78, 0.87, respectively) between the dust and air samples compared to those of the allergens Der f 1 and Der p 1 (R 2 = 0.5, 0.7, respectively). This research contributes to the development of robust biological exposure assessment and the elaboration of airborne and dust-borne bio-mass in the living environments.  相似文献

A nested-intensity design for surveying plant diversity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Managers of natural landscapes need cost-efficient, accurate, and precise systems to inventory plant diversity. We investigated a nested-intensity sampling design to assess local and landscape-scale heterogeneity of plant species richness in aspen stands in southern Colorado, USA. The nested-intensity design used three vegetation sampling techniques: the Modified-Whittaker, a 1000-m2 multiple-scale plot (n = 8); a 100-m2 multiple-scale Intensive plot (n = 15); and a 100-m2 single-scale Extensive plot (n = 28). The large Modified-Whittaker plot (1000 m2) recorded greater species richness per plot than the other two sampling techniques (P < 0.001), estimated cover of a greater number of species in 1-m2 subplots (P < 0.018), and captured 32 species missed by the smaller, more numerous 100-m2 plots of the other designs. The Intensive plots extended the environmental gradient sampled, capturing 17 species missed by the other techniques, and improved species–area calculations. The greater number of Extensive plots further expanded the gradient sampled, and captured 18 additional species. The multi-scale Modified-Whittaker and Intensive designs allowed quantification of the slopes of species–area curves in the single-scale Extensive plots. Multiple linear regressions were able to predict the slope of species–area curves (adj R 2 = 0.64, P < 0.001) at each Extensive plot, allowing comparison of species richness at each sample location. Comparison of species–accumulation curves generated with each technique suggested that small, single-scale plot techniques might be very misleading because they underestimate species richness by missing locally rare species at every site. A combination of large and small multi-scale and single-scale plots greatly improves our understanding of native and exotic plant diversity patterns.  相似文献
