Synopsis We document differences in the use of microhabitats, male courtship behavior, and swimming performance of populations from headwater and downstream sites in two rivers of the Oropuche drainage in Trinidad. Guppies from headwater sites used microhabitats with higher water velocities, had a higher swimming performance, and were less patchily distributed than guppies from downstream sites. Although males from the headwater and downstream sites had similar display rates, males from headwater sites displayed in microhabitats with higher velocities (riffles) whereas males in downstream sites courted in still pools. Subtle effects of female choice maintain the honesty of male courtship behavior in various microhabitats. In downstream sites, where predators impose a survivorship cost on ornamental males, swimming performance was positively correlated with area of carotenoid ornamentation. In headwater sites, males frequently displayed in fast-flowing water, thus paid a higher metabolic cost of courtship. Interactions between characteristics of the physical habitat and predation pressure not only affect the distribution of guppies, but also have subtle effects on the types of condition-dependent traits favored by females.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine if differentwater velocities during ontogeny affect male physical condition, male signal intensity, and female mating preferences in theguppy (Poecilia reticulata). Guppies were raised in aquariain either high or low water velocities and fed in excess. Analysisof 72 males from four replicates indicated that high velocitymales had longer mean displays and spent more total time displayingthan low velocity males. These males also had significantlyfaster swimming speeds, wider caudal peduncles, and were moreattractive to females than low velocity males. There were nodifferences in display rates, body widths, standard lengths,or copulation attempts between high and low velocity males. These results indicate that water velocity conditions duringontogeny act as a proximal factor that influences the displaybehavior of guppies. Water velocity caused an indirect increasein the power of the male display to produce a female sexualresponse. The morpho-metric measurements suggest that the proximalmechanism behind the increased display intensity was the increasedmuscle development of males raised in high water velocities, which resulted in longer prolonged swimming speeds and moreintense displays. Therefore, display behavior of guppies maybe a general indicator of overall male physical condition.[BehavEcol07: 272–278 (1996)]  相似文献

Female guppies Poecilia reticulata descended from the Tacarigua population in Trinidad subject to high predation exhibited strong preferences for males with relatively high levels of carotenoid colouration. The study, which controlled for differences in male courtship, revealed that mate choice in this population is based on the expression of orange pigmentation, irrespective of differences in male motivation.  相似文献

In guppies (Poecilia reticulata) precopulatory sexual selection (via female choice) and post-copulatory selection (via sperm competition) both favour males with relatively high levels of carotenoid (orange) pigmentation, suggesting that colourful males produce more competitive ejaculates. Here we test whether there is a positive association between male orange pigmentation and sperm quality. Our analysis of sperm quality focused on sperm swimming speeds (using CASA: computer-assisted sperm analysis to estimate three parameters of sperm velocity in vitro), sperm viability (proportion of live sperm per stripped ejaculate) and sperm lengths. We found that males with relatively large areas of orange pigmentation had significantly faster and more viable sperm than their less ornamented counterparts, suggesting a possible link between dietary carotenoid intake and sperm quality. By contrast, we found no relationship between sperm length (head length and total sperm length) and male phenotype. These findings, in conjunction with previous work showing that highly ornamented male guppies sire higher quality offspring, suggest that female preference for colourful males and sperm competition work in concert to favour intrinsically higher quality males.  相似文献

The Wujiang River, a tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir, has many dams along its length. These dams alter the river's natural habitat and produce various flow regimes and degrees of predator stress. To test whether the swimming performance and external body shape of pale chub (Zacco platypus) have changed as a result of alterations in the flow regime and predator conditions, we measured the steady (U crit) and unsteady (fast-start) swimming performances and morphological characteristics of fish collected from different sites along the Wujiang River. We also calculated the maximum respiratory capacity and cost of transport (COT). We demonstrated significant differences in swimming performance and morphological traits among the sampling sites. Steady swimming performance was positively correlated with water velocity and negatively correlated with the abundance of predators, whereas unsteady swimming performance was negatively correlated with water velocity. The body shape was significantly correlated with both swimming performance and ecological parameters. These findings suggested that selection pressure on swimming performance results in a higher U crit and a more streamlined body shape in fast-flow and (or) in habitats with low predator stress and subsequently results in a lower COT. These characteristics were accompanied by a poorer fast-start performance than that of the fish from the slow-flow and (or) high-predator habitats. The divergence in U crit may also be due in part to variation in respiratory capacity.  相似文献

Disentangling the selective factors that act on male colour in wild guppies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The colour pattern of male guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) is thought to evolve as a compromise between sexual selection (favouring conspicuousness) and natural selection (favouring crypsis). Underpinning this classic explanation is the observation that guppies living with dangerous fish predators are less colourful than guppies living without these predators. However, high fish-predation sites are generally farther downstream than low fish-predation sites, and so may also differ in physical habitat features related to stream size, as well as in the abundance of predatory prawns ( Macrobrachium crenulatum ). The goal of our study was to disentangle the effects of fish predation on colour evolution from the potential effects of physical habitat features and predation by prawns. We collected 20 male guppies from each of 29 sites in two Trinidadian rivers. We then quantified the colour pattern of these fish; each spot was measured for size and assigned to a colour category. For each site, we determined the fish predation regime and quantified stream size, water colour, canopy openness, and prawn abundance. We then used regressions to assess the relative importance of these factors in explaining variation in guppy colour. Supporting previous work, the presence of predatory fishes was the most important explanatory variable for many components of colour pattern. Physical habitat features explained some of the remaining variation, but in inconsistent ways between the two rivers. The abundance of predatory prawns also explained variation in male colour. Our results suggest that predatory fishes impose the strongest selection on the colour pattern of male guppies but that other factors are also important.  相似文献

Riverine fish populations are traditionally considered to be highly structured and subject to strong genetic drift. Here, we use microsatellites to analyse the population structure of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), focussing on the headwater floodplain area of the Caroni drainage in Trinidad. We also analyse the population genetics of guppies in the Northern Drainage in Trinidad, a habitat characterized by rivers flowing directly into the sea, and a small isolated population in Tobago. Upland Caroni populations are highly differentiated and display low levels of genetic diversity. However, we found no evidence to suggest that these upland populations experienced recent population crashes and the populations appear to approach mutation–drift equilibrium. Dominant downstream migration over both short‐ and long‐time frames has a strong impact on the population genetics of lowland Caroni populations. This drainage system could be considered a source–sink metapopulation, with the tributary furthest downstream representing a ‘super sink’, receiving immigrants from rivers upstream in the drainage. Moreover, the effective population size in the lowlands is surprisingly low in comparison with the apparently large census population sizes.  相似文献

The stereotypical courtship display (CD) behavior of the male blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, includes an unusual component: the rhythmic waving of the swimming appendages above the carapace. This behavior occurs in a unique context but it resembles two other rhythmic behaviors performed using the swimming legs: sideways swimming and backward swimming. As a first step to understanding the mechanisms that allow the expression of apparently different rhythmic motor patterns, we have examined these behaviors using slow motion video analysis and electromyography of the basal muscles of the swimming legs in freely behaving crabs. The results show that these behaviors are distinguished by four parameters: the frequency of leg waving, the phase relationship between the legs, the presence of a stationary pause in basal muscle activity combined with rotation of the distal leg during CD, and an extended range of motion of these legs during CD and backward swimming, relative to sideways swimming. EMG analysis revealed that during sideways swimming, the sequence of muscular activity between the two legs was different. In contrast, during CD and backward swimming the sequence of activity for these legs is identical.Abbreviations CD courtship display - EMGs electromyograms - CD AMP courtship display in crabs with amputated fifth legs - CD1 crabs that voluntarily used one leg to perform courtship display waving - CD 1–3 courtship waving in cycles 1–3 - CD MID courtship waving after cycles 1–3 - M-C meral-carpal joint  相似文献

Sexual selection often favors male secondary sexual traits, although in some cases the elaborate traits incur costs to the males with respect to natural selection. Males of the guppy Poecilia reticulata have longer tails (caudal fins) than females, and the long tails contribute to the mating success of the males through female mate choice. We examined the effect of tail length on the swimming performance of male and female guppies. In a laboratory experiment, males with longer tails exhibited poorer swimming performance than those with shorter tails. However, this effect was not apparent in females. In addition, in a feral population, tail length of males was negatively correlated with water flow velocity in their microhabitats. Although body size of females was negatively correlated with water flow velocity in their microhabitats, tail length of females showed no significant correlation with degree of water flow. These results suggest that the long tail of male guppies incurs costs, such as a decrease in swimming performance, to the males with respect to natural selection and consequently limits their choice of habitats to those with slow water flow.

The trade‐offs involved in allocating carotenoid pigments and food to healing and regrowing damaged caudal fin tissue v . other functions were examined in guppies Poecilia reticulata , a species in which females prefer males that display larger amounts of carotenoids in their skin. The guppies were derived from four natural populations in Trinidad that differed in resource availability but not predation intensity. Carotenoids, food and site of origin did not affect either absolute or relative fin regrowth, which suggested that fin regeneration in guppies was not constrained by carotenoid availability. It is possible that carotenoid intake influences fin regeneration in the presence of natural stressors such as predators. There was a significant negative interaction between food level in the laboratory and resource availability in the field: males from low‐resource‐availability sites regrew more fin tissue when raised on the high food level, and males from high‐resource‐availability sites regrew more fin tissue when raised on the low food level. The direction of this interaction runs counter to theoretical expectations.  相似文献

Acoustic signals are well established as key components of mate selection in terrestrial species, but not in aquatic species. It has long been known that damselfish (Pomacentridae) use a combined visual and acoustic display in their courtship.. This study examined several male qualities including individual size, courtship vigor, territory size and complexity, as well as components of the acoustic call including dominant frequency, pulse characteristics and repetition rate. The objective was to determine which male traits were correlated with mating success. Observations made over ten reproductive cycles revealed that female mate choices were not random and that male mating success was correlated with courtship rate (a simultaneous visual and acoustic cue) and the number of neighboring females, but not with male morphological traits, territory quality, or acoustic call structure. These results suggest that females choose mates based on a condition-dependent trait (courtship rate) that advertises quality of paternal care, which supports good parent models of sexual selection, thereby demonstrating the importance of the combined acoustic/visual display for sexual selection in fishes  相似文献

Stream and river ecosystems present fluvial fishes with a dynamic energy landscape because moving water generates heterogeneous flow fields that are rarely static in space and time. Fish movement behavior should be consistent with conserving energy in these dynamic flowing environments, but little evidence supporting this hypothesis exists. Here, we tested experimentally whether three general movement behaviors—against the current, with the current, or holding position (i.e., staying in one position and location)—were performed in a way consistent with minimizing the cost of swimming in a heterogeneous flow field. We tested the effects of water velocity on movement behavior across three age classes (0, 1, and 5 years) of two different fluvial specialist fishes, the pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) and shovelnose sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus). Individuals from the three age classes were exposed to a continuous and dynamic velocity field ranging from 0.02 to 0.53 m s−1, which represented natural benthic flow regimes occupied by these species in rivers. Both sturgeon species exhibited the same pattern with regard to their tendency to hold position, move upstream, or move downstream. Moving downstream was positively associated with velocity for all age groups. Moving upstream was inversely related to velocity for young fish, but as the fish aged, moving upstream was not related to water velocity. The oldest fish (age 5) moved upstream more frequently compared to the younger age classes. Holding position within a water current was the most frequent behavior and occurred with similar probability across the range of experimental velocity for youngest fish (age 0), but was inversely related to velocity in older fish. Our experiment across age classes suggests that the suite of swimming behaviors exhibited by fluvial specialists might have evolved to mitigate the energetic costs of complex energy landscapes generated by moving water to ultimately maximize net energy gain.  相似文献

We present the first detailed analysis of carotenoid pigmentation of the integument of guppies (Poecilia reticulata Peters), quantifying variation in carotenoid content and composition of wild guppies from three drainages on Trinidad (1) between the sexual and general pigmentation of males, (2) between the sexes, and (3) geographically in relation to carotenoid availability. We report that the carotenoid pigments in the integument of guppies are predominantly esters of tunaxanthin. The peak wavelength of carotenoids in the orange spots of males lay only ca. 2.8 nm higher than that of pigments outside of the orange spots, and the peak wavelength of carotenoids in the male whole integument does not differ from that in the female whole integument. Carotenoid composition of the general integument of females and the non-orange spot fraction of males, but not of the orange spot fraction of males, varied with diet, correlating with the ratio beta-carotene to lutein in the different streams. Male guppies deposit higher concentrations of carotenoids in their orange spots than in the rest of the integument (five to nine times higher), but not at the expense of the general integument, which was similarly endowed as the general integument of females, even in carotenoid-poor streams. Presumably males absorb/retain more pigments than females. Photoreceptor-based simulations suggest that tunaxanthin provides both greater brightness and chroma than would 4-keto-carotenoids such as astaxanthin.  相似文献

Recent empirical and conceptual papers have highlighted the potential for metabolism to act as a proximate mechanism for behavior that could explain animal personality (consistency over time). Under this hypothesis, individuals with consistently high levels of behavioral activity should also have high resting metabolic rate (RMR) as it can reflect capacity to process food and generate energy. We tested for the predicted positive covariance between RMR and three behaviors that differ in energy demands in 30 male guppies, using multivariate mixed models; we repeatedly measured their activity (10 times each), courtship displays (nine times), voracity (10 times), and metabolism (four‐times). Resting metabolic rate (measured overnight in respirometry trials) did not consistently differ among males, whereas initial peak metabolism measured during those same trials (= 0.42), and all behaviors were repeatable (= 0.33–0.51). RMR declined over time suggesting habituation to the protocol, whereas peak metabolism did not. Initial peak metabolism was negatively correlated with courtship display intensity, and voracity was positively correlated with activity, but all other among‐individual correlations were not significant. We conclude that RMR does not provide a proximate explanation for consistent individual differences in behavior in male guppies, and therefore the potential for independent evolution of these physiological and behavioral traits seems possible. Finally, we identify peak metabolism as a potential measure of the stress response to confinement, which highlights the value of considering various aspects of metabolic rates recording during respirometry trials.  相似文献

The influences of low-head dams on the fish assemblages were examined in this study, using fish data collected in six treatment and five reference sites at three low-head dams in the headwater streams of the Qingyi watershed, China. Comparing with those in the reference sites, local habitat variables were significantly altered by low-head dams in the treatment sites, involving wider channel (only in the impoundment area), deeper water and slower flow. Fish species richness varied significantly across seasons, not across site categories, suggesting that these low-head dams did not alter species richness. However, significant decreases in fish abundance and density were observed in the impoundment areas immediately upstream of dams, but not in the plunge areas downstream. Fish assemblage structures kept relative stability across seasons, and their significant difference between-site was only observed between the impoundment areas and the sites far from dams upstream. This variation in assemblage structures was due to the differing relative abundance of some co-occurring species; more lentic but less lotic fish was observed in the impoundment areas. The spatial and temporal patterns of fish assemblages were correlated with local habitat in this study area. Wetted width had negative correlation with fish species richness, abundance and density, respectively. Water temperature also positively affected species richness. In addition, wetted width, water depth, current velocity and substrate were the important habitat variables influencing assemblage structures. Our results suggested that, by modifying local habitat characteristics, low-head dams altered fish abundance and density in the impoundment areas immediately upstream of dam, not in the plunge areas immediately downstream, and thereby influenced fish assemblage structures in these stream segments.  相似文献

We examined the effects of hot spring water (35–45 °C) on the ecology of a small, intermittant swamp-stream in Nova Scotia, Canada. Temperatures diminished quickly with distance downstream from the hot spring because of abundant inflow of cold ground water (<10 °C), but elevated temperature effects were detectable 130 m downstream. The brook below the hot spring supported a dense mat of the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria (10 m) followed by the green alga Vaucheria taylorii (40 m). Herbaceous vegetation below the algal zones was also altered by the hot water inflow, even where the temperature increase was slight. The structure of the sparse community of benthic invertebrates was sharply different at sites of different stream temperature: only oligochaete worms, ostracods, chironomids, and a single species of snail thrived at the warmest sites; cold downstream sites supported a typical headwater stream community. Mass loss from decomposing leaves of speckled alder was fast at all sites and strongly correlated with water temperature. The changes in community composition and decomposition rate in response to added heat persisted even where the temperature increase was small, indicating a tight coupling of ecosystem structure and function with the physical environment.  相似文献

Out-of-channel wood jams centred by fluvially-deposited large wood represent an important habitat for riparian plant species along large rivers dominated by exposed riverine sediments. Such wood jams often display distinct physical features associated with the jams, such as areas of scour immediately upstream, plumes of fine sediment downstream and abundant organic material deposited throughout the jam. This paper examines the relationship between physical characteristics of young wood jams (1–3 years since deposition) and riparian plant diversity along the braided River Tagliamento in Northeast Italy. Species richness of riparian plants was significantly positively correlated to the depth of scour features and amount of fine sediment around the wood jams, which facilitate improved access to the water table and increase available water in the sediments, respectively. Species diversity was significantly positively correlated to scour pool depth only. Scour depth was in turn influenced by wood jam size, indicating that larger jams may indirectly increase riparian plant diversity. Management and restoration of riparian zones containing exposed riverine sediments should allow for the formation of wood jams and their associated features where possible, in order to potentially increase localised biodiversity.  相似文献

Many sex-specific traits involved in mating consist of functionally coordinated morphologies and behaviors. How the components of these complex traits evolve and become coordinated during evolution is unknown. In order to understand how such trait complexes evolve and diversify, we must decipher the genetic underpinnings of their components. In this study, we begin to elucidate the genetic architecture underlying differences in functionally related male pigmentation and behavior between two Asian Drosophila melanogaster group species, D. elegans and D. gunungcola. D. elegans possesses a male-specific wing melanin spot and a stereotypical wing display element in male courtship, whereas D. gunungcola lacks both of these traits. Using reciprocal F1 male hybrids, we demonstrate that the X-chromosome contains a major locus or loci required for wing spot formation and that autosomal loci largely determine the male courtship display. Using phenotypic and genetic analysis of backcross progeny, we further demonstrate that both the wing spot and courtship differences between the two species are polygenic and both depend at least in small part on genetic factors on both the X and the autosomes. Finally, we find that male wing spot size and courtship wing display are highly correlated in backcross progeny, suggesting that linkage or pleiotropy may have been involved in their coordinated evolution.  相似文献

Synopsis Fish assemblages at eleven sites within the Mary River were sampled over a 15 month period by back-pack electrofishing. The study took place during a period of abnormally low flows but included two high flow events one of which approached record levels. Spatial and temporal variation in fish assemblage structure was pronounced. Spatial variation was related to position within the catchment and correlated with habitat attributes related to substrate composition and water depth. The absence of a strong effect due to water velocity was probably due to overall low water flows throughout the study period. Temporal variation at some sites, particularly headwater sites, was correlated with changes in the amount and type of cover available to fishes. Cover was significantly correlated with the mean species richness of each site. Flooding had very little effect on both fish assemblage structure and the physical structure of the habitat but resulted in substantial reduction in the amount and type of cover available to fishes. The flow regime of the Mary River was highly variable and consequently both the timing and duration of high and low flows was unpredictable.  相似文献
