The purpose of this study was to investigate whether running economy is affected by isokinetic eccentric exercise designed to cause muscle damage. Twenty-four young healthy men performed 120 maximal voluntary eccentric actions at each thigh's quadriceps muscle at an angular velocity of 60 degrees .s. The participants were then randomly divided into 2 equal groups, 1 of which exercised 24 hours later, while the other group rested. Muscle damage indicators (i.e., serum creatine kinase, delayed onset muscle soreness, and eccentric, concentric, and isometric peak torque) and running economy indicators (i.e., oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilation, respiratory exchange ratio, respiratory rate, and heart rate during treadmill running at 2.2 and 3.3 m.s) were assessed prior to and 48 hours following the eccentric exercise. All muscle damage indicators changed significantly in both groups (p < 0.05) in a way suggestive of considerable muscle damage. Running economy indicators of the exercise group demonstrated only an elevation of respiratory rate at 48 hours (p < 0.05) and a tendency to lower economy compared to the resting group. It can be concluded that isokinetic eccentric exercise applied to the quadriceps femoris muscles did not affect running economy 48 hours later and that resting during this period tended to result in more economical running compared to exercising at 24 hours.  相似文献

Stretching can lead to decreased muscle stiffness and has been associated with decreased force and power production. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of static stretching (SS) on running economy and endurance performance in trained female distance runners. Twelve long distance female (30 ± 9 years) runners were assessed for height (159.4 ± 7.4 cm), weight (54.8 ± 7.2 kg), % body fat (19.7 ± 2.8%), and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max: 48.4 ± 5.1 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)). Participants performed 2 sessions of 60-minute treadmill runs following a randomly assigned SS protocol or quiet sitting (QS). During the first 30 minutes (running economy), expired gases, heart rate (HR), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded while the participant ran at 65% VO2max. During the final 30 minutes (endurance performance), distance covered, speed, HR, and RPE were recorded while the participant attempted to cover as much distance as possible. Repeated measures analyses of variance were performed on the data. Significance was accepted at p < 0.05. The SS measured by sit-and-reach increased flexibility (SS: 29.8 ± 8.3 vs. QS: 33.1 ± 8.1 cm) but had no effect on running economy (VO2: 33.7 ± 3.2 vs. 33.8 ± 2.3 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)), calorie expenditure (270 ± 41 vs. 270 ± 41 kcal), HR (157 ± 10 vs. 160 ± 12 b·min(-1)), or endurance performance (5.5 ± 0.6 vs. 5.5 ± 0.7 km). These findings indicated that stretching did not have an adverse effect on endurance performance in trained women. This suggests that the performance decrements previously associated with stretching may not occur in trained women.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference in static stretching (SS), dynamic stretching (DS), and no stretching (NS) on maximal strength (one-repetition maximum [1RM]) in the bench and leg presses using free weights on 19 college-aged men and 32 women. Most of the participants were moderately to very active and had previous experience with weight training. The design was repeated measures, with each treatment being randomly assigned. Each testing session was separated by 72 hours. Moderate-intensity stretching was defined as stretching as far as possible without any assistance, and subjects were encouraged to do their best. For the SS routine, the chest, shoulder, triceps, quadriceps, and hamstrings were stretched. Three repetitions were performed for 15 seconds, each separated by a 10-second rest. For DS, the upper-body stretch was swinging each arm, one at a time, as far forward and then as far backward as possible in a diagonal plane. For the legs, the same movement was done for each leg, except performed in a sagittal plane. Each forward and backward movement took about 2 seconds. Three 30-second sets were administered, and a 10-second rest was allowed between sets. Next, 1RM was determined for the bench and leg presses in random order. Two warm-up sets were given, followed by several 1RM attempts. The last successful lift was recorded as the 1RM. Data were reported using means +/- SD. A one-way ANOVA with repeated measures was used with alpha set at 0.05. There was no significant difference among the treatments. Moderate-intensity stretching does not seem to adversely affect 1RM in the bench and leg presses.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation (VI), respiratory exchange ratio (R), stride frequency and blood lactate concentrations were measured continuously in nine trained athletes during two continuous incremental treadmill runs to exhaustion on gradients of either 0 degree or -3 degrees. Compared to the run at 0 degree gradient, the athletes reached significantly higher maximal treadmill velocities but significantly lower VO2, VI, R and peak blood lactate concentrations (P less than 0.001) during downhill running. These lower VO2 and blood lactate concentrations at exhaustion indicated that factors other than oxygen delivery limited maximal performance during the downhill run. In contrast, stride frequencies were similar at each treadmill velocity; the higher maximal speed during the downhill run was achieved with a significantly longer stride length (P less than 0.001); maximal stride frequency was the same between tests. Equivalent maximal stride frequencies suggested that factors determining the rate of lower limb stride recovery may have limited maximal running speed during downhill running and, possibly, also during horizontal running.  相似文献

The energy demand during physical exercise causes an increased oxygen uptake and supply to active tissues, which may increase the rate of free oxygen radical production and thereby affect the capacity of endogenous cellular defense systems. This could result in DNA base modifications, among which 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8OHdG) is one of the most important and has widely been used as a biomarker of in vivo oxidative lesions. Therefore, we examined the effect of regular running exercise on the urinary levels of 8OHdG in 32 long-distance runners and in a group of untrained healthy subjects. The range of 8OHdG in urine was 0.12–6.45 μmol/mol creatinine in both groups, and no significant difference in the mean excretion levels between runners and control probands was observed. This gives no reason to believe that physical exercise in trained individuals may induce a disturbance of the oxidant-to-antioxidant balance. Accepted: 30 January 1997  相似文献

The importance of adenosine in controlling the magnitude and distribution of blood flow among and within skeletal muscles in rats during slow locomotor exercise was tested by systemic infusion of adenosine deaminase (ADA). Blood flows were measured using labeled microspheres before exercise and at 0.5, 15, and 30 min of fast treadmill walking at 15 m/min. An initial infusion of ADA (1,000 U/kg) was given 30 min before the first blood flow measurement and a second injection (1,000 U/kg) was given 5 min into exercise. These infusions maintained ADA activity above 5 U/ml blood throughout the experimental period. This plasma concentration of ADA was shown to be sufficient to result in a 64% decrease in muscle adenosine levels during ischemic contraction. Blood flows were measured in all of the muscles of the hindlimb (28 samples) and in various nonmuscular tissues in ADA-treated and control rats. Preexercise blood flows were primarily directed to slow-twitch muscles and exercise blood flows were highest in muscles with fast-twitch oxidative fibers. ADA treatment did not reduce total muscle blood flow or exercise blood flows in any of the muscles at any time. These findings do not support the hypothesis that adenosine plays an essential role in controlling muscle blood flow in skeletal muscles during normal locomotor activity.  相似文献

The NAD+-dependent deacylase family of sirtuin enzymes have been implicated in biological ageing, late-life health and overall lifespan, though of these members, a role for sirtuin-2 (SIRT2) is less clear. Transgenic overexpression of SIRT2 in the BubR1 hypomorph model of progeria can rescue many aspects of health and increase overall lifespan, due to a specific interaction between SIRT2 and BubR1 that improves the stability of this protein. It is less clear whether SIRT2 is relevant to biological ageing outside of a model where BubR1 is under-expressed. Here, we sought to test whether SIRT2 over-expression would impact the overall health and lifespan of mice on a nonprogeroid, wild-type background. While we previously found that SIRT2 transgenic overexpression prolonged female fertility, here, we did not observe any additional impact on health or lifespan, which was measured in both male and female mice on standard chow diets, and in males challenged with a high-fat diet. At the biochemical level, NMR studies revealed an increase in total levels of a number of metabolites in the brain of SIRT2-Tg animals, pointing to a potential impact in cell composition; however, this did not translate into functional differences. Overall, we conclude that strategies to enhance SIRT2 protein levels may not lead to increased longevity.  相似文献

Recovery that takes place in a cold environment after endurance exercise elevates PGC-1α mRNA whereas ERRα and NRF2 mRNA expression are inhibited. However, the effect of local skeletal muscle cooling on mitochondrial-related gene expression is unknown.PurposeTo determine the impact of local skeletal muscle cooling during recovery from an acute bout of exercise on mitochondrial-related gene expression.MethodsRecreationally-trained male cyclists (n=8, age 25±3 y, height 181±6 cm, weight 79±8 kg, 12.8±3.6% body fat, VO2peak 4.52±0.88 L·min−1 protocol) completed a 90-min variable intensity cycling protocol followed by 4 h of recovery. During recovery, ice was applied intermittently to one leg (ICE) while the other leg served as a control (CON). Intramuscular temperature was recorded continuously. Muscle biopsies were taken from each vastus lateralis at 4 h post-exercise for the analysis of mitochondrial-related gene expression.ResultsIntramuscular temperature was colder in ICE (26.7±1.1 °C) than CON (35.5±0.1 °C) throughout the 4 h recovery period (p<0.001). There were no differences in expression of PGC-1α, TFAM, NRF1, NRF2, or ERRα mRNA between ICE and CON after the 4 h recovery period.ConclusionLocal muscle cooling after exercise does not impact the expression of mitochondrial biogenesis-related genes compared to recovery from exercise in control conditions. When these data are considered with previous research, the stimuli for cold-induced gene expression alterations may be related to factors other than local muscle temperature. Additionally, different intramuscular temperatures should be examined to determine dose-response of mitochondrial-related gene expression.  相似文献

The relationships between biocmechanical aspects of distance running, running economy (VO2 submax), and performance were investigated. A variety of biomechanical measures for 31 subjects running at 3.6 m/s was obtained, including three-dimensional angular and translational kinematics, ground reaction forces and center of pressure patterns, mechanical power, and anthropometric measures. Physiological measures obtained included maximal and submaximal O2 consumption, muscle fiber composition, and measures of the ability to store and return elastic energy during knee bends. A subset of 16 runners was also evaluated in relation to performance in a 10-km run. Biomechanical variables were identified which showed significant differences or consistent trends between groups separated on the basis of VO2 submax, establishing the importance of biomechanical influences on running economy. It appears that no single variable or small subset of variables can explain differences in economy between individuals but rather that economy is related to a weighted sum of the influences of many variables.  相似文献

Inconsistent use of terminology plagues the study and management of biological invasions. The term “invasive” has been used to describe inter alia (1) any introduced non-indigenous species; (2) introduced species that spread rapidly in a new region; and (3) introduced species that have harmful environmental impacts, particularly on native species. The second definition in various forms is more commonly used by ecologists, while the third definition is pervasive in policy papers and legislation. We tested the relationship between the invasiveness of an introduced species and its impact on native biodiversity. We quantified a species’ invasiveness by both its rate of establishment and its rate of spread, while its impact was assigned a categorical ranking based on the documented effects of the invader on native species populations. We found no correlations between these variables for introduced plants, mammals, fishes, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, suggesting that the mechanisms of invasion and impact are not strongly linked. Our results support the view that the term “invasive” should not be used to connote negative environmental impact.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship that age has on factors affecting running economy (RE) in competitive distance runners. Fifty-one male and female subelite distance runners (Young [Y]: 18-39 years [n = 18]; Master [M]: 40-59 years [n = 22]; and Older [O]: 60-older [n = 11]) were measured for RE, step rate, lactate threshold (LT), VO2max, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, power, and body composition. An RE test was conducted at 4 different velocities (161, 188, 215, and 241 m·min(-1)), with subjects running for 5 minutes at each velocity. The steady-state VO2max during the last minute of each stage was recorded and plotted vs. speed, and a regression equation was formulated. A 1 × 3 analysis of variance revealed no differences in the slopes of the RE regression lines among age groups (y = 0.1827x - 0.2974; R2 = 0.9511 [Y]; y = 0.1988x - 1.0416; R2 = 0.9697 [M]; y = 0.1727x + 3.0252; R2 = 0.9618 [O]). The VO2max was significantly lower in the O group compared to in the Y and M groups (Y = 64.1 ± 3.2; M = 56.8 ± 2.7; O = 44.4 ± 1.7 mlO2·kg(-1)·min(-1)). The maximal heart rate and velocity @ LT were significantly different among all age groups (Y = 197 ± 4; M = 183 ± 2; O = 170 ± 6 b·min(-1) and Y = 289.7 ± 27.0; M = 251.5 ± 32.9; O = 212.3 ± 24.6 m·min(-1), respectively). The VO2max @ LT was significantly lower in the O group compared to in the Y and M groups (Y = 50.3 ± 2.0; M = 48.8 ± 2.9; O = 34.9 ± 3.2 mlO2·kg(-1)·min(-1)). The O group was significantly lower than in the Y and M groups in flexibility, power, and upper body strength. Multiple regression analyses showed that strength and power were significantly related to running velocity. The results from this cross-sectional analysis suggest that age-related declines in running performance are associated with declines in maximal and submaximal cardiorespiratory variables and declines in strength and power, not because of declines in running economy.  相似文献

This study described the effect of leucine supplementation on serum amino acid concentration during two different exercise sessions in competitive male power athletes. The subjects performed a strength exercise session (SES; n = 16; 26 +/- 4 years) or a maximal anaerobic running exercise session (MARE; n = 12; 27 +/- 5 years) until exhaustion twice at a 7-day interval. The randomized subjects consumed drinks containing leucine (100 mg x kg/body weight before and during SES or 200 mg x kg/body weight before MARE) or placebo. Blood specimens taken 10 min before (B) and after (A) the sessions were analyzed for serum amino acids. In SES the concentration of leucine was distinctly higher in the leucine supplemented group than in the placebo group in both B (p < 0.001) and A (p < 0.001) samples. The leucine concentration decreased in placebo but not in the leucine supplemented group following the exercise session. Isoleucine (p = 0.017) and valine (p = 0.006) concentration decreased more in the leucine supplemented group than in placebo in A samples. In MARE the concentration of leucine was higher in the leucine supplemented group than in placebo in both B (p < 0.001) and A (p < 0.001) samples and increased (p < 0.001) in the supplemented group following the session. Isoleucine (p = 0.020) and valine (p = 0.006) concentration decreased in the supplemented group in A samples. There were no differences in a counter movement jump after SES or in the running performance in MARE between the leucine supplemented group and placebo. These findings indicate that consuming leucine before or before and during exercise sessions results in changes in blood amino acid concentration. However, the supplementation does not affect an acute physical performance.  相似文献

The carbon neutral potential of bioenergy relies in part on the ability of feedstocks to sequester carbon (C) in the soil. Sugarcane is one of the most widely used bioenergy crops, yet there remain unknowns about how it impacts soil C dynamics. In addition, Oilcane, a genetically modified version of Sugarcane has been produced to accumulate more energy-dense oils and less soluble lignin, which enhances conversion efficiency but may also impact soil C cycling. Thus, our objectives were to examine the impact of Sugarcane litter decomposition on soil C formation and losses and determine if the genetic modifications to produce Oilcane alter these dynamics. To do this, we incubated bagasse (processed stem litter) and leaf litter from Sugarcane and Oilcane in microcosms with forest soil for 11 weeks. We used differences in natural abundance δ13C between C3 forest soil and C4 litter to trace the fate of the litter into respiratory losses as well as stable and unstable soil C pools. Our results show that genetic modifications to Oilcane did not substantially alter soil C dynamics. Sugarcane and Oilcane litter both led to net soil C gains dominated by an accumulation of the added litter as unstable, particulate organic C (POC). Oilcane litter led to small but significantly greater net soil C gains than Sugarcane litter due to greater POC formation, but the formation of stable, mineral associated organic matter (MAOC) did not differ between crop types. Sugarcane and Oilcane had opposing effects on tissue type where Sugarcane bagasse formed more MAOC, while Oilcane leaves preferentially remained as POC which may have important management implications. These results suggest that genetic modifications to Sugarcane will not significantly impact soil C dynamics; however, this may not be universal to other crops particularly if modifications lead to greater differences in litter chemistry.  相似文献

Background

Although the relationship between allergic inflammation and lung carcinogenesis is not clearly defined, several reports suggest an increased incidence of lung cancer in patients with asthma. We aimed at determining the functional impact of allergic inflammation on chemical carcinogenesis in the lungs of mice.

Methods

Balb/c mice received single-dose urethane (1 g/kg at day 0) and two-stage ovalbumin during tumor initiation (sensitization: days -14 and 0; challenge: daily at days 6-12), tumor progression (sensitization: days 70 and 84; challenge: daily at days 90-96), or chronically (sensitization: days -14 and 0; challenge: daily at days 6-12 and thrice weekly thereafter). In addition, interleukin (IL)-5 deficient and wild-type C57BL/6 mice received ten weekly urethane injections. All mice were sacrificed after four months. Primary end-points were number, size, and histology of lung tumors. Secondary end-points were inflammatory cells and mediators in the airspace compartment.

Results

Ovalbumin provoked acute allergic inflammation and chronic remodeling of murine airways, evident by airspace eosinophilia, IL-5 up-regulation, and airspace enlargement. Urethane resulted in formation of atypical alveolar hyperplasias, adenomas, and adenocarcinomas in mouse lungs. Ovalbumin-induced allergic inflammation during tumor initiation, progression, or continuously did not impact the number, size, or histologic distribution of urethane-induced pulmonary neoplastic lesions. In addition, genetic deficiency in IL-5 had no effect on urethane-induced lung tumorigenesis.

Conclusions

Allergic inflammation does not impact chemical-induced carcinogenesis of the airways. These findings suggest that not all types of airway inflammation influence lung carcinogenesis and cast doubt on the idea of a mechanistic link between asthma and lung cancer.  相似文献

Collagen is a triple-helical protein that forms various macromolecular organizations in tissues and is responsible for the biomechanical and physical properties of most organs. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy is a valuable imaging technique to probe collagen fibrillar organization. In this article, we use a multiscale nonlinear optical formalism to bring theoretical evidence that anisotropy of polarization-resolved SHG mostly reflects the micrometer-scale disorder in the collagen fibril distribution. Our theoretical expectations are confirmed by experimental results in rat-tail tendon. To that end, we report what to our knowledge is the first experimental implementation of polarization-resolved SHG microscopy combined with mechanical assays, to simultaneously monitor the biomechanical response of rat-tail tendon at macroscopic scale and the rearrangement of collagen fibrils in this tissue at microscopic scale. These experiments bring direct evidence that tendon stretching corresponds to straightening and aligning of collagen fibrils within the fascicle. We observe a decrease in the SHG anisotropy parameter when the tendon is stretched in a physiological range, in agreement with our numerical simulations. Moreover, these experiments provide a unique measurement of the nonlinear optical response of aligned fibrils. Our data show an excellent agreement with recently published theoretical calculations of the collagen triple helix hyperpolarizability.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between fatigue-induced changes in running economy (RE) and muscular strength endurance (MSE). Ten well-trained male runners completed 2 runs of the same energy expenditure at 20%Δ VO(2) below LT. In the middle of the experimental condition (high intensity exercise [HIE]), there was a 4-minute block at sVO(2)max. The aim of the 4-minute block was to increase RE through fatigue, without inducing exhaustion. The MSE of hip extensors (HEs) and knee flexors (KFs) was assessed by 2 20-second eccentric bouts on an isokinetic dynamometer at 180°·s(-1). The RE increased after HIE compared to the control condition. Partial correlations found the increase in RE was strongly related with KF MSE (r = -0.709-0.798; p = 0.03-0.01). Greater MSE appeared to confer a fatigue resistant effect, resulting in a smaller increase in RE. The underlying mechanism of the fatigue resistant effect remains to be elucidated. Conditioning work focusing on augmenting eccentric muscular endurance of the legs may offer beneficial adaptations that promote fatigue resistance.  相似文献
