Feeding patterns and habits of sitatunga were assessed in Rushebeya‐Kanyabaha wetland between June 2006 and July 2007. Sixty transects were cut at intervals of 250 m along which sitatunga dung piles, habitats used and diet were identified from feeding signs or plant damage. Household interviews were also conducted in villages adjacent to the wetland to understand plants and crops known to be fed on by sitatunga, type of damage, frequency of sitatunga farm visits and their methods to control crop raiding. Sitatunga mostly fed on leaves (60%) and in the wetland edge (WE) habitat (49%). Forty plant species were recorded to be eaten with herbs as majority (33%) and of crops sweet potatoes were most raided. Sitatungas are basically solitary species with 73% of the sightings being of a single individual. They had mornings and late evenings as their movement peaks and preferred to feed on broad leaved plants. There were significant relationships between both habitat use and food preferences with seasons. We predict that because of seasonal food variations, crop raiding would increase and may result into more negative attitudes by farmers to sitatunga. More research on farmers’ sensitization, population census, behaviours and ecotourism are necessary for this species conservation.  相似文献

Tidal groundwater in a mangrove swamp can return to the mangrove creek by one of two mechanisms: (a) it can either flow through the swamp soil due to the water table difference between the creek and the groundwater in the swamp; or (b) it can flow via tidal flushing of animal burrows. This paper compares the magnitude of these two mechanisms for different regions of a mangrove swamp. Direct groundwater flow rates resulting from water stored in the sediment as a consequence of infiltration, especially during and after tidal inundation, were calculated for every square meter in the surface of a mangrove forest from piezometer data. Flow rates of water due to burrow flushing were determined based on published surveys, by estimating the burrow volume and the percentage of the burrow water that is flushed at each tidal inundation. Although direct groundwater flux was found to decrease further away from the creek compared to close to the creek, it was also found to have a similar range as burrow flushing flow. Specifically, direct groundwater flow ranged from 0.004 to 0.04 m3/m2/day, whilst burrow flushing flux ranged from 0.01 to 0.04 m3/m2/day.Considering the errors involved in the experiments and calculations, these ranges can be considered as being the same and neither of the two processes can be considered as negligible compared to the other. As a consequence, surveys of groundwater processes in mangrove areas, and more generally in swamp and tidal areas where animal burrows are present, will need to consider both mechanisms. Investigations of the influence over flushing mechanisms of different residence times of the water in burrows and in the sediment body would also be recommended in order to establish salt and nutrient budget in mangrove swamps.  相似文献

Between January and December 2008, we assessed the diet and habitat selection of sitatunga, a highly endangered tropical wetland antelope threatened by habitat loss in Rushebeya‐Kanyabaha wetland. Microhistological faecal analysis and vegetative sampling methods were used to assess plant forms, species and seasonal changes in the sitatunga diet. Habitat use was indirectly determined by assessing feeding patterns, distribution of dung and trails within the wetland. Sitatunga fed mainly on herbs, sedges, grasses and shrubs. A total of 34 plant species were recorded as eaten by sitatunga. The most eaten plant species was Cyperus papyrus L. (22%). Malenthera scandens Schum. & Thonn., Polygonum senegalense Meisu (12%) and Polygonum pulchrum Blume (5%) were the most eaten herbs. Zea mays L. was the most eaten agricultural crop (58% of domestic crops), mainly during the wet season. Sitatunga feeding was mainly concentrated on the wetland edge habitat (46%) where most of its food (53%) was located. The other preferred habitat was the tall closed papyrus. We conclude that the long‐term survival of sitatunga requires a management plan focussing on the conservation of the most preferred plant species and habitats.  相似文献

The resting behaviour of the land snail Arianta arbustorum (L.) from different geographic areas in the eastern Swiss Alps was compared under uniform conditions in order to examine whether local populations had evolved adaptive differences.Differences were observed in resting site preferences of snails from different geographic provenances, which did not seem to be associated with any environmental variables. The observed patterns support the electrophoretic evidence from other studies that there is gene flow between geographically very close populations, above all, along streams. This gene flow may swamp incipient behavioural changes. Morphological differences in shell features, however, appear to take place in spite of gene flow.  相似文献

Exploratory behaviour is important as animals get vital information about their environment through exploration. As an adaptation to different environmental conditions it should differ between species. The exploratory behaviour of 69 parrot-species from eight tribes with different diets and habitat preferences were investigated in the Vogelpark Walsrode and private aviaries. On two test days seperated by a resting period of two days an unknown object (wooden ring) was fixed in the familiar aviary over a perch for six hours. Latencies between introduction of the object and first tactile contact and duration of exploration were taken as a measure of exploration. 17 ecological variables, including 10 different sorts of food, 4 habitat types, migratory behaviour, and origin from island or mainland were correlated to the data by using a multiple regression analysis. Species from islands or which inhabit forest edge or eat nectar, fruit, or nuts were found to have the shortest latencies. The results are in concordance with hypothesis, that species which have to search for cryptic or seasonal food or have low predation risks (islands) should show more exploration than species with other food preferences or high prediation risks.  相似文献

Most mangrove swamp/salt flat systems have tidal currents that are ebb dominated, however, some systems show only slight ebb dominance despite having a very large swamp volume relative to the creek volume. Cocoa Ck in northern Australia is such a system. Results are presented from a simple analytical model for flow in Cocoa creek together with detailed water level observations in the swamps. It was found that the primary factor reducing the ebb dominance of this system was the very low slope of the swamp surface. During rising tides, water floods as sheet flow; however, on ebb tides, the surface water slope in the swamp becomes greater than the swamp surface slope, with the result that areas of swamp closest to the main feeder creek (Cocoa Ck) dry before areas furthest from the creek. Thus, about an hour after ebb tide commences, there is a large quantity of water perched on the salt flats/mangroves, tens of centimetres higher than the water in the creek. This water cannot leave the swamp via sheet flow, but must leave through a very small and shallow creek which is also highly constricted by vegetation. This effectively increases the friction on ebb tides and results in a delay in water leaving the swamps and salt flats, reducing any tendency towards ebb dominance.  相似文献

The zooplankton of various water reservoirs in the Polistovo-Lovatskaya upland swamp system was investigated. The studied reservoir types included primary lakes, as well as secondary marsh reservoirs of the margin, intermediate, and central zones of the swamp, which were characterized by a high humification level (permanganate values of 50–100 mg O l−1) and low pH values (3.5–5.5). The trophic structure of the zooplankton community was modelled both on the original data on species abundance and literature data on the feeding preferences of the studied species. Significant differences in the taxonomic and trophic structures of the studied primary and secondary marsh water reservoirs were discovered, including species lists and the balance of the various trophic groups.  相似文献

Ground water inputs and outputs of N were studied for a small ground water discharge swamp situated in a headwater drainage basin in southern Ontario, Canada. Darcy's equation with data for piezometers was used to measure inputs of shallow local ground water at the swamp margin and deep regional ground water beneath the swamp. Ground water flux was also quantified by measuring ground water discharge to the outlet stream draining the swamp in combination with a chemical mixing model to separate shallow and deep ground water components based on chloride differences. Estimates of shallow ground water flux determined by these two approaches agreed closely however, the piezometer data seriously underestimated the deep ground water input to the swamp. An average ground water input-output budget of total N (TN) total organic nitrogen (TON) ammonium (NH4 +-N) and nitrate (NO3 --N) was estimated for stream base flow periods which occurred on an average of 328 days each year during 1986–1990. Approximately 90% of the annual NO3 --N input was contributed by shallow ground water at the swamp margin. Deep ground water represented about 65% of the total ground water input and a similar proportion of TON and NH4 +-N inputs. Annual ground water NO3 --N inputs and outputs were similar whereas NH4 +-N retention was 4 kg ha-1 representing about 68% of annual ground water input. Annual TON inputs in ground water exceeded outputs by 7.7 kg ha (27%). The capacity of the swamp to regulate ground water N fluxes was influenced by the N chemistry of ground water inputs and the hydrologic pathways of transport within the swamp.  相似文献

Juvenile rig (Mustelus lenticulatus) were internally tagged with acoustic transmitters and tracked with acoustic receivers deployed throughout two arms of Porirua Harbour, a small (7 km2) estuary in New Zealand. Ten rig were tracked for up to four months during summer–autumn to determine their spatial and temporal use of the habitat. The overall goal was to estimate the size of Marine Protected Areas required to protect rig nursery areas from direct human impacts. Rig showed clear site preferences, but those preferences varied among rig and over time. They spent most of their time in large basins and on shallow sand and mud flats around the margins, and avoided deep channels. Habitat range increased during autumn for many of the rig. Only one shark spent time in both harbour arms, indicating that there was little movement between the two. Rig home ranges were 2–7 km2, suggesting that an effective MPA would need to cover the entire Porirua Harbour. They moved to outer harbour sites following some high river flow rates, and most left the harbour permanently during or soon after a river spike, suggesting that they were avoiding low salinity water. Rig showed strong diel movements during summer, although the diel pattern weakened in autumn. Persistent use of the same day and night sites indicates that diel movements are directed rather than random. Further research is required to determine the sizes of rig home ranges in larger harbours where nursery habitat is more extensive. Marine Protected Areas do not control land-based impacts such as accelerated sedimentation and heavy metal pollution, so integration of marine and terrestrial management tools across a range of government agencies is essential to fully protect nursery areas.  相似文献

The role of antennae and maxillary palps in mediating food preferences by Manduca sexta (Johan.) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) was examined. Fifth‐instar larvae, having different chemosensory organs remaining after microsurgery, were tested in two‐choice feeding assays using three solanaceous host species Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill.), Datura innoxia (Mill.), and Solanum pseudocapsicum (L.), an acceptable non‐host Raphanus sativus (L.) (Cruciferae), and an unacceptable non‐host Pelargonium hortorum (L.H. Bailey) (Geraniaceae). Larvae had a choice between leaf discs of two plant species or between one species and moist filter paper discs (water). The antennae are fully competent in mediating normal (unimpaired) food preferences for S. pseudocapsicum vs. water and P. hortorum vs. water. Thus, the antennae alone can mediate both acceptance and rejection behaviour. The latter is the first report of such a function in M. sexta. The antennae are partly competent (reduced preference) for S. pseudocapsicum vs. P. hortorum. No antennal competence could be demonstrated using the other plant species tested. The antennae alone are either partly needed (R. sativus vs. water) or not necessary to elicit normal food preferences for the plant species tested. The maxillary palps are fully competent in mediating normal food preference for S. pseudocapsicum vs. water, and D. innoxia vs. water. The palps are partly competent for S. pseudocapsicum vs. P. hortorum and incompetent for the other plant species tested. Thus, the maxillary palps alone could only mediate acceptance behaviour in this study. The need of the maxillary palps in normal food preferences could not be demonstrated. Interestingly, the maxillary palps alone can mediate food preferences for two normally rejected plants, R. sativus and P. hortorum. Similar results are reported for two other non‐host plant species, Vigna unguiculata (Walp.) (Leguminosae) and Vinca rosea (L.) (Apocynaceae). Perhaps, the maxillary palps inform M. sexta mostly about feeding stimulatory chemicals common to most plant species.  相似文献

This paper continues to explore niche differentiation in Gammarus pulex and Asellus aquaticus by analysis of their food preferences. Individuals from both species discriminated between leaf discs colonized by different fungal species and exhibited strong preferences for Anguillospora longissima and Heliscus lugdunensis. Fungal preferences were not correlated with the relative abundance of fungi in the field and there was considerable intra-population variability in food preferences — both between individuals and for the same individual through time. Niche overlap between animals from all four study populations was high and there was no evidence of differences in the potential trophic niches of animals from sympatric and allopatric populations.  相似文献

Data from three published studies of genetic variation at 18 microsatellite loci in water buffalo populations in China (18 swamp type, two river type), Nepal (one wild, one domestic river, one hybrid) and south-east Asia (eight swamp, three river) were combined so as to gain a broader understanding of genetic relationships among the populations and their demographic history. Mean numbers of alleles and expected heterozygosities were significantly different among populations. Estimates of θ (a measure of population differentiation) were significant among the swamp populations for all loci and among the river populations for most loci. Differentiation among the Chinese swamp populations (which was due primarily to just one population) was much less than among the south-east Asian. The Nepal wild animals, phenotypically swamp type but genetically like river type, are significantly different from all the domestic river populations and presumably represent the ancestral Bubalus arnee (possibly with some river-type introgression). Relationships among the swamp populations (D(A) genetic distances, principal component analysis and structure analyses) show the south-east Asian populations separated into two groups by the Chinese populations. Given these relationships and the patterns of genetic variability, we postulate that the swamp buffalo was domesticated in the region of the far south of China, northern Thailand and Indochina. Following domestication, it spread south through peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi, and north through China, and then to Taiwan, the Philippines and Borneo.  相似文献

SUMMARY

A general investigation was carried out on Lake Liambezi to characterize the limnological features of the lake. The lake, 101 km2 in area and situated within the tropics, was found to be shallow and bordered by reed swamps, particularly on the south-western shore. It was polymictic and consequently oxygen levels were high at all depths. Transparency was such that photosynthesis occurred to the bottom. Conductivity ranged from 17,3 to 41,2 mSm?1 and the waters were moderately alkaline. Transfer of organic detritus from the reed swamp into the open water has resulted in the presence of high levels of organic nitrogen and phosphorus whilst ambient levels of inorganic forms were low. Planktonic chlorophyll a concentrations ranged between 1 and 104 μg l?1 and Microcystis was the dominant phytoplankter. The dominant zooplankter was Bosmina. The important species of phytoplankton and zooplankton are listed and include two new species of blue-green algae which are described. The lake was found to be generally similar to most shallow tropical African lakes with a wide diversity of food sources for fish. Progressive encroachment by Salvinia appears to hamper access to fishing areas and the fishery potential is threatened.  相似文献

Until recently it was generally believed that gorillas avoid water. In two recent, independent faunal surveys in the Likouala swamp of north central Congo, we have found that gorillas occur at high densities, extending the known range of Gorilla gorilla gorillavery close to the Oubangui River. The gorillas in this area fed on the abundant ground vegetation of herbaceous monocotyledons in the swamp forest. In adjacent islands of terra firmathere was little evidence of gorilla nesting or feeding, indicating that they spend at least part of the year almost exclusively in the swamp forests. Recent reports from several sites in West Africa indicate that swamp forests may generally provide abundant food resources that are used regularly by gorillas.  相似文献

The benthic macroinvertebrates in the Kenya waters of Lake Victoria (ca. 1400 km2) were surveyed during four 10 day sampling periods in February, April, August and November 1984. Fourty three taxonomic groups were recorded. Oligochaetes, molluscs and dipteran larvae were the most abundant and widely distributed groups. The dominant oligochaetes were Branchiura sowerbyii Beddard and the swamp worm Alma emini Michaelsen, which were abundant in all silty and soft mud areas in both littoral and open water zones. Melanoides tuberculata Müller, Bellamya unicolor Olivier and Caelatura spp. were the most abundant molluscs. Different patterns were observed between near-littoral stations (<8 m deep) and deep water stations (8–40 m deep). After 10 years (1994), the macroinvertebrates of Lake Victoria were examined again. No evidence was found of seasonal changes in the composition or benthos density, although local changes occurred in some species which were attributed to swarming behaviour or larval settlement patterns. The spatial distribution of the fauna may be influenced primarily by oxygen availability and industrial effluent discharged from paper mill and agro-based industries in the catchment of the lake. There has been a shift in abundance, from an Oligochaeta and Insecta dominated community in 1984, to the present community dominated by Mollusca and Oligochaeta. The ecological role of the benthic community and its recent changes to fisheries production in the lake is discussed.  相似文献

The distributions of organic matter in the tropical swamps in southern Thailand are reported. The concentrations of particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC and DOC) in the Bang Nara River, which drains swamp forests and nearby paddy fields, were 2.9 ± 2.0 and 6.2 ± 1.3 mg C l−1, respectively. Although the variation was large, DOC concentration in the Bang Nara River seemed to be higher than POC in November 1992 (DOC/POC ratio, 2.8 ± 2.2). River waters from the upland areas were characterized by low POC and DOC concentrations as compared with Bang Nara River water. The δ13C values of POC and river sediments were useful to distinguish between organic matter originating in upland and swamp areas. It is suggested that the distributions of organic matter and its isotopic composition reflect the difference in drainage characteristics between lowland swamp and upland areas. Isotopic analyses of plant leaves and soils revealed that the swamp forest ecosystems were characterized by low δ13C and low δ15N values, which suggested low efficiency of water use by plants and large contributions of atmospheric deposition of nitrogen, respectively. Although CO2 recycling in the forest might be an important factor determining the δ13C values of understory plants, the main process in carbon metabolism of tropical swamp forests would be CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and forest canopy. Colour is an important factor in food detection and acquisition by animals using visually based foraging. Colour can be used to identify the suitability of a food source or improve the efficiency of food detection, and can even be linked to mate choice. Food colour preferences are known to exist, but whether these preferences are heritable and how these preferences evolve is unknown. Using the freshwater fish Poecilia reticulata, we artificially selected for chase behaviour towards two different-coloured moving stimuli: red and blue spots. A response to selection was only seen for chase behaviours towards the red, with realized heritabilities ranging from 0.25 to 0.30. Despite intense selection, no significant chase response was recorded for the blue-selected lines. This lack of response may be due to the motion-detection mechanism in the guppy visual system and may have novel implications for the evolvability of responses to colour-related signals. The behavioural response to several colours after five generations of selection suggests that the colour opponency system of the fish may regulate the response to selection.  相似文献

By studying the responses of different species to urbanization, it is possible to understand the impact of this type of habitat modification and to explore, more generally, the link between variations in the environment and changes in behaviour. We radio collared 17 badgers Meles meles from six social groups in a 1 km2 urban study area in Brighton, UK, where local badger population density was high, and collected data on their ranging behaviour between 2005 and 2007. We aimed to determine how badgers adapt their behaviour to an urban environment and to assess the generality of previously reported differences in the ranging and territorial behaviour of urban and rural badgers. Analysis of habitat preferences and movement patterns suggested that garden habitat was principally used for foraging, while scrub and allotment habitats were important in allowing animals to travel from one part of their range to another. Group and individual home ranges were the smallest so far recorded for badgers (mean 100% minimum convex polygons=9.26 and 4.91 ha, respectively). Individual range size was negatively correlated with the availability of garden habitat, suggesting that the rich food resources provided by gardens enabled ranges to be small. Group ranges were mostly non-contiguous and there was no evidence of territorial scent marking; rather, activity was mainly restricted to areas in the vicinity of main setts. It is clear that badgers can adapt successfully to urban habitats and that this process affects various aspects of their behaviour. However, our high-density population of urban badgers displayed patterns of behaviour that differed not only from those of typical rural badgers, but also in some respects from those of a previously studied low-density urban population. We conclude that generalizations about the effects of urbanization must be made with caution.  相似文献

Predictable sources of food underpin lifetime reproductive output in long lived animals. The most important foraging areas of top marine predators are therefore likely to be related to environmental features that enhance productivity in predictable spatial and temporal patterns. Even so, although productive areas within the marine environment are distributed patchily in space and time, most studies assess the relationships between feeding activity and proximate, not long term, environmental characteristics. In addition, individuals within a population may exploit different prey types, and these are often associated with different hydrographic features. Until now, models attempting to associate core foraging areas (CFAs) of marine predators with the environmental characteristics of those areas have not considered the diet of individual animals, despite the influence this could have on these relationships. We used bathymetry and multi‐year (n=24) mean sea surface temperature and variability as predictors of CFAs of lactating Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella at Heard Island. The effect of prey types on the predictability of these models was explored by matching diet and foraging trip data of individual seals (n=40 seals, n=1 trip each). Differences in diet between seals were mirrored by their spatial behaviour. Foraging strategies differed both between and within groups of seals consuming different diets. Long‐term environmental parameters were useful for predicting the foraging activity of seals that consumed a single prey type with relatively specific habitat preferences, but not for those that consumed single or multiple prey types associated with more varied habitats. Ignoring individual variation in predator diet probably contributes to the poor performance of foraging habitat models. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating individual specialization in foraging behaviour into ecological models and management of predator populations.  相似文献
