Three trials were conducted to study age, weight, percent body fat and protein content of 131 crossbred and purebred beef heifers at puberty, to investigate relationships among various pubertal measurements and to determine if body fat and protein values could be used in combination with age, weight and shoulder height to predict the onset of puberty. Trials 1 and 2 compared heifers on treatments of high (H), medium (M) and low (L) levels of energy. The rations were formulated at 120, 100 and 80 percent of the National Research Council (NRC) recommendation for energy. The protein level was 100 percent of the NRC recommendation for all three treatments. Each animal was examined every two weeks per rectum for the presence of follicles and corpora lutea. The presence of a mature corpus luteum indicated the attainment of puberty. Trial 3 heifers were fed the same level of nutrition but ovulation data were based on weekly rectal palpations and on the presence of greater than 2.0 ng/ml blood plasma progesterone. Percentage of fat and protein were quantified in all trials using a whole body counter. In Trial 1 there was a significant difference (P<0.01) among energy levels for mean weight and percent fat values at puberty, but no differences in age at puberty. Even though heifers in Trial 2 were also fed different energy levels, there were no differences among treatments for the variables measured. The onset of puberty in Trial 2 appeared to be delayed due to cooler than normal weather during that experimental period. Heifers in Trial 2 tended to be older and reached puberty approximately one month later in the year than heifers in Trials 1 and 3, despite similarities in weight gain among the trials. In all trials, high R(2) values for multiple stepwise regression analyses indicated that body composition estimates were useful in predicting weight at puberty in beef heifers. The results of this study do not support a critical body weight or body composition hypothesis in the beef heifer. It was concluded that these data indicate environmental factors may have more effect than nutrition on the onset of puberty.  相似文献

Normal estrous cycles were established for twenty beef heifers. Ten heifers were inoculated with blood from a known carrier. The inoculated heifers experienced anemia, anorexia, and positive complement-fixing antibody titers, and . was observed on the erythrocytes while uninoculated control heifers remained normal. Further observation following inoculation revealed that five of ten inoculated heifers experienced anestrus while controls continued to cycle normally. Anestrus coincided with clinical signs of acute anaplasmosis. Normal estrus patterns returned following treatment and recovery. This study provides evidence that acute anaplasmosis in beef heifers may cause anestrus and therefore lead to reproductive inefficiency.  相似文献

The objective was to determine the efficacy of a previously used CIDR or melengestrol acetate (MGA; 0.5mg/head/day) for resynchronization of estrus in beef heifers not pregnant to timed-AI (TAI). In three experiments and a field trial, heifers were reinseminated 6-12 h after first detection of estrus. Pregnancy diagnosis was done from approximately 25-43 days after either TAI or reinsemination. In Experiment 1, 79 heifers received a once-used CIDR from 13 to 20 days after TAI and 80 heifers were untreated controls. For these two groups, there were 34 and 35 heifers, respectively, not pregnant to TAI; median +/- S.E. intervals from TAI to onset of estrus were 22 +/- 0.2 days versus 20 +/- 0.6 days (P < 0.001); estrus rates were 70.6% versus 85.7% (P = 0.1); conception rates were 62.5% versus 76.7% (P < 0.3); and pregnancy rates were 44.1% versus 65.7% (P = 0.07), for CIDR and untreated (control) groups, respectively. In Experiment 2, heifers (n = 651) were TAI (Day 0) and 13 days later randomly assigned to one of seven groups (n = 93 per group) to receive a once-used CIDR (three groups; Days 13-20), MGA (three groups; Days 13-19), or no treatment (control group). Groups given a CIDR or MGA also received: no further treatment (CIDR or MGA alone); 1.5mg estradiol-17beta (E-17beta) and 50 mg progesterone (P4) in 2 mL canola oil on Day 13; or E-17beta and P4 on Day 13 and 0.5 mg E-17beta on Day 21 (24 h after CIDR removal or 48 h after the last feeding of MGA). Pregnancy rate to TAI was lowest (P < 0.05) for the group given a CIDR plus E-17beta and P4 on Day 13 and E-17beta on Day 21. Variability in return to estrus was greater (P < 0.001) in the control and MGA groups than in CIDR groups. Conception and pregnancy rates in heifers given a CIDR (65.1 and 61.4%) were higher (P<0.01) than those fed MGA (49.6 and 40.4%), but not different from controls (62.2 and 54.9%, respectively). In Experiment 3, 616 heifers received a once- or twice-used CIDR for 7 days, beginning 13+/-1 days after TAI, with or without a concurrent injection of 150 mg of P4 (2 x 2 factorial design). Pregnancy rate to TAI was 47.2%. In heifers that returned to estrus, there was no significant difference between a once- or twice-used CIDR for rates of estrus (68.8%, P < 0.3), conception (65.9%, P < 0.6) and pregnancy (45.3%, P < 0.8). Injecting progesterone at CIDR insertion increased the median interval from CIDR removal to onset of estrus (P < 0.05) and reduced rates of estrus (63.8% versus 73.8%, P<0.05), conception (60.5% versus 70.6%, P = 0.1) and pregnancy (38.6% versus 52.2%, P < 0.02). In a field trial, 983 heifers received a once-used CIDR for 7 days, beginning 13 +/- 1 days after TAI. Pregnancy rate to TAI was 55.2%. The median (and mode) of the interval from CIDR removal to estrus was 2.5 days. Estrus, conception and pregnancy rates were 78.2, 70.3 and 55.0% (overall pregnancy rate to TAI and rebreeding, 78.7%). In summary, a once- or twice-used CIDR for 7 days, starting 13 +/- 1 days after TAI resulted in the majority of nonpregnant heifers detected in estrus over a 4-day interval, with acceptable conception rates; however, injecting progesterone at CIDR insertion significantly reduced both estrus and pregnancy rates, and estradiol treatment after CIDR removal was associated with a decreased pregnancy rate to TAI. Estrus synchronization contributes to optimizing the use of time, labor, and financial resources by shortening the calving season, in addition to increasing the uniformity of the calf crop. We determined whether acceptable pregnancy rates could be achieved after synchronization of ovulation and fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) in peripuberal replacement beef heifers using gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and PGF2alpha. Crossbred heifers from two herds (MH, n=239; SS, n=330) were wintered at a single location. After a prebreeding examination revealed that 55 heifers had a reproductive tract score (RTS) of 1 (infantile reproductive tracts), they were culled and the remaining heifers were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups: administration of 25mg PGF2alpha i.m. on Days -12 and 0 followed by estrus detection and insemination between 10 and 14 h after an observed estrus (Control; n=173); administration of 100 microg GnRH i.m. on Day -6, followed by 25 mg PGF2alpha i.m. on Day 0, then fixed-time AI and administration of 100 microg GnRH i.m. on Day +2 (GPG; n=172); and, treatment as for group GPG in addition to administration of 100 microg GnRH i.m. on Day -12 (GGPG; n=169). Bulls were introduced 10 days after AI for 60 days to breed heifers which did not conceive after AI (clean-up bulls). On Days -12, -6, and 0 transrectal ultrasonography was used to monitor ovarian structures in a subset of heifers (30 per treatment). At 30-35 days after AI, ultrasound was used to determine the presence of a viable fetus. Presence of a fetus and stage of pregnancy were determined via palpation per rectum 61-63 days after the conclusion of the breeding season. Heifers in the MH herd (309+/-1.9 kg) were heavier (P<0.001) than those in the SS herd (283+/-1.7 kg) at initiation of the breeding season. Synchronized pregnancy rates were greater (P<0.05) in GGPG (25.4%) and GPG (22.1%) than Control (12.7%) heifers. Pregnancy rates were 9, 21, 32, or 31% for heifers with RTS of 2, 3, 4, or 5, respectively. The average diameter of 22 follicles induced to ovulate in heifers treated with GnRH (GPG and GGPG treatments) was 14.2+/-0.8 mm (range=10.0-23.6 mm). In conclusion, a fixed-time ovulation synchronization program using GnRH and PGF2alpha improved pregnancy rates in peripuberal, lightweight replacement beef heifers.  相似文献

Each of 32 crossbred beef heifers was brought from pasture on day 16 of its estrous cycle and assigned randomly to one of four treatment groups as follows: Field Control (FC), Field Dexamethasone (FD), Pen Control (PC), and Pen Dexamethasone (PD). Field groups were kept in a 0.8-ha field and pen groups were kept in 4.6-x 9.8-m pens in a pole barn during the trial. Dexamethasone (DEX) groups received 20 mg of DEX on cycle day 16 and 30 mg daily on days 17 through 20. Control heifers received an equal volume of physiological saline solution on corresponding cycle days. Average treatment cycle lengths (±SD) for control heifers in FC and PC groups were 21.1 ± 2.8 and 21.6 ± 1.8 days, respectively, and were not significantly different. Average time from progesterone decline (<1 ng/ml) to estrus was two days for each of the control groups. Four DEX-injected heifers had not shown estrus by day 44 of the treatment cycle. Progesterone had declined for two of these heifers by cycle day 18 and remained below 1 ng/ml past cycle day 48. The other two showed a decline in plasma progesterone by cycle days 18 and 32, respectively, and a progesterone rise by day 42 without having been detected in estrus. The remaining 12 DEX heifers had an average cycle length of 29.4 days. Four extended cycles resulted from extended CL function, five from an extended period from progesterone decline to estrus and three from a combination of these factors. These observations suggest that the administration of pharmacological doses of glucocorticoid during the late diestrus or early proestrus may result in altered ovarian function.  相似文献

A systematic sample of replacement heifers from 5 herds underwent prebreeding vaginal swab cultures for Ureaplasma diversum. Heifers from three of the herds were subsequently sampled at pregnancy examination. Sampled heifers were given a vaginal lesion score (VLS), reproductive tract score (RTS) and body condition score (BCS), and peripheral blood was collected for serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) estimation. Culture results revealed an overall prevalence of Ureaplasma diversum of 51% (87/171) at prebreeding and 65% (64/98) at pregnancy examination. Within herd prevalence ranged from 36% to 64% at prebreeding and 54% to 76% at pregnancy examination. Prevalence tended to differ between herds (P=0.08). At the prebreeding examination, heifers with a BCS of 5.5 or less were more likely to be culture positive than heifers with a BCS greater than 5.5 (p<0.05). No relationship was noted between BUN, VLS, RTS, or pregnancy status and prebreeding culture status. There was little variability among the heifers for any of these variables, with vaginal lesion scores generally being mild, RTS scores being high and BCS scores being moderate. At pregnancy examination, heifers that were culture negative tended to be more likely to be pregnant (odds 3.7, p=0.10) than culture positive heifers.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to examine whether pregnancy diagnosis was possible by measuring fecal progesterone concentrations in beef and dairy heifers and beef cows. Rectal fecal samples collected on days 18–24 after insemination or days 11–17 after embryo transfer were mixed with methanol and shaken for preparation of a fecal solution. After centrifugation, the supernatant was extracted with petroleum ether followed by an enzyme immunoassay for progesterone. All pregnant animals showed fecal progesterone concentrations greater than 50 ng/g of fecal material on days 18–24 after AI or estrus. In non-pregnant animals, however, the fecal progesterone concentrations ranged widely from 5 to 180 ng/g of fecal material. In non-pregnant cattle, the percentage of cattle with <50 ng progesterone/g of fecal material compared with the total number was 37–60% on days 18–20, whereas the percentages increased more than 70% to a maximum of 78.1% on day 23. When 50 ng/g was considered as the cut-off value, the sensitivity and specificity of positive pregnancy tests were less than 70% on days 21–24, and 100% for negative pregnancy tests on days 18–24. There were significant differences in the mean fecal progesterone concentrations between pregnant and non-pregnant cattle on days 19–24. These results suggest that feces can be utilized to substitute for plasma and milk to measure progesterone for the purpose of pregnancy diagnosis in heifers and cows.  相似文献

Four trials were conducted to study synchronous estrous response in beef cows and in beef and dairy heifers to Luprostiol (13, thia-PG-F(2)alpha analog) in comparison with other prostaglandin products. In Trial 1, 60 virgin beef heifers were observed for estrus for 5 d and artificially inseminated. Heifers not observed in estrus within 5 d were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 25 mg Lutalyse. In Trial 2, 75 multiparous, lactating beef cows were randomly assigned to receive either 15 mg Luprostiol, 25 mg Lutalyse or 500 mcg Estrumate. All cows received a second injection of the respective treatment 11 d later. In Trial 3, 96 multiparous, lactating beef cows were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 25 mg Lutalyse. All cows received a second injection of the respective treatment 11 d later. In Trial 4, virgin dairy heifers were palpated per rectum. Seventy-seven heifers with a palpable corpus luteum (CL) were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 500 mcg Estrumate. In all trials animals were artificially inseminated 12 h following observed estrus. Estrous response during the 5-d synchronized period was 44% for Luprostiol and 42% for Lutalyse treated heifers in Trial 1. It was 52, 56 and 60%, respectively, for Luprostiol, Lutalyse and Estrumate treated cows in Trial 2; 23% for Luprostiol and 19% for Lutalyse treated cows in Trial 3; and 68% for Luprostiol and 70% for Estrumate treated heifers in Trial 4. Treatment with Luprostiol results in a similar synchronous estrous response as with the other prostaglandin products used in these studies.  相似文献

Two experiments evaluated long-term controlled internal drug release (CIDR) insert-based protocols to synchronize estrus and compare differences in their potential ability to facilitate fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in beef heifers. In Experiment 1 estrous cycling heifers (n = 85) were assigned to one of two treatments by age and body weight (BW). Heifers with T1 received a CIDR from days 0 to 14, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) on day 23, and prostaglandin F (PG) on day 30. Heifers with T2 received a CIDR from days 2 to 16, GnRH on day 23, and PG on day 30. Ovaries were evaluated by ultrasonography on days 23 and 25 to determine ovulatory response to GnRH. In Experiment 2 heifers (n = 353) were assigned within reproductive tract scores by age and BW to one of four treatments. Heifers in T1 and T2 received the same treatments described in Experiment 1. Heifers in T3 and T4 received the same treatments as T1 and T2, respectively, minus the addition of GnRH. In Experiments 1 and 2, heifers were fitted with HeatWatch transmitters for estrous detection and AI was performed 12 h after estrus. In Experiment 1 heifers assigned to T1 had larger dominant follicles at GnRH compared to T2 (P < 0.01) but response to GnRH, estrous response after PG, mean interval to estrus, and variance for interval to estrus after PG did not differ (P > 0.10). AI conception and final pregnancy rate were similar (P > 0.50). In Experiment 2 estrous response after PG did not differ (P > 0.70). Differences in mean interval to estrus and variance for interval to estrus (P < 0.05) differed based on the three-way interaction of treatment length, GnRH, and estrous cyclicity status. AI conception and final pregnancy rates were similar (P > 0.10). In summary, the greater estrous response following PG and resulting AI conception and final pregnancy rates reported for heifers assigned to the two treatments in Experiment 1 and among the four treatments in Experiment 2 suggest that each of these long-term CIDR-based protocols was effective in synchronizing estrus in prepubertal and estrous cycling beef heifers. However, the three-way interaction involving treatment length, GnRH, and estrous cyclicity status in Experiment 2 clearly suggests that further evaluation of long-term CIDR-based protocols is required with and without the addition of GnRH and on the basis of estrous cyclicity status to determine the efficacy of these protocols for use in facilitating FTAI.  相似文献

Successful heifer rearing is dependent on achieving optimal average daily gain (ADG) targets to calve for the first time at 24 months. Whilst dairy farmers internationally have traditionally managed their heifers on-farm to achieve these targets, recent dairy herd expansion within Europe has resulted in increased demand for labour-saving heifer-rearing strategies, such as off-farm contractrearing. However, loss of direct influence on the day-to-day management decisions affecting the ability of heifers to grow adequately to achieve this age of first calving may represent a potential barrier to uptake. Hence, the aim of this longitudinal observational study was to compare the growth rates of contract- vs home-reared heifers. Approximately 6 500 heifers from 120 commercial Irish dairy farms were enrolled in a 3-year study. For 65 of these farms, heifers were reared at a contract-rearing facility. For the remaining 55 farms, heifers were reared on their home farm. Over the course of 20 months from birth until precalving, heifers were examined and weighed at four farm visits. The relationship between several independent variables (farm type, herd size, heifer breed, economic breeding index (EBI) and health events) and ADG at different time points was investigated and analysed utilising linear mixed models. Overall ADG for heifers throughout the rearing period was 0.71 kg/day. There was a significant association between farm type and ADG for all five linear ADG models; home-reared heifers grew, on average, 0.025, 0.039, 0.11 and 0.059 kg/day more than contract-reared heifers between visit 1 and visit 4 (overall ADG), visit 1 and visit 2, visit 2 and visit 3 and visit 1 and visit 3, respectively. The occurrence of diarrhoea during farm visit 2 (median age 8.5 months) was associated with a significant reduction in ADG between visit 3 and visit 4. Calf-hood disease (diarrhoea, respiratory disease or navel ill) was not associated with the growth rate during any of the subsequent visit periods. While home-reared heifers had greater ADG during four of the five periods studied, median heifer ADG in both cohorts exceeded the minimum published target weight gains at each developmental stage required for heifers to reach puberty, conceive at 15 months and calve for the first time at 24 months. Importantly, there was wide variation both within enterprises and between farms. It was concluded that while the absolute difference in daily growth rates of home- and contract-reared heifers was minimal, when considered in the context of the entire heifer-rearing period, these growth rate differences have the potential to impact the future reproductive and milk production performance of heifers.  相似文献

Seventy-eight Hereford-Angus crossbred heifers were injected intramuscularly twice with 6 mg of alfaprostolb in 6 ml of propylene glycol. On each representative day of a 20-day estrous cycle (estrus = Day 0), either three or four heifers received their first injection. The second injection was given 12 days after the first, regardless of the response to the first injection. Thirty-nine heifers were not treated. The first alfaprostol injection reduced serum progesterone to less than 1 ng/ml in all heifers injected after Day 4. A total of 79.5% (6278) of the heifers exhibited estrus by five days after the first injection. Average interval from injection to estrus was 63 hours. The second injection occurred on Days 6 through 16 for all but one heifer, with 75.6% (5978) falling on Days 8 through 11 of the estrous cycle. Estrus was detected in 93.6% (7378) of the heifers within five days after the second injection, with an average interval to estrus of 66 hours.Day of cycle at second injection did not affect the interval to estrus. Conception occurred in 79.4% (5873) of the heifers inseminated in the five days after the second injection. Occurrence of estrus and conception was no different in treated heifers after five days of the insemination period than in nontreated heifers after 21 days of the insemination period, where 94.9% (3739) were observed in estrus and 83.8% (3137) conceived. Overall percent conception for a 55-day insemination period was 89.7 (7078) for treated and 87.2 (3439) for nontreated heifers. Day of cycle at first or second injection did not affect conception after the second injection. Some signs of estrus were observed in 11 of the 16 heifers injected before Day 5.A second trial to determine if alfaprostol induced luteolysis early in the cycle was conducted. Twenty purebred Angus, Hereford, or Simmental heifers received either one or two injections of alfaprostol on either Day 1, 2, 3, or 4. Only five heifers showed any signs of estrus, and the three that were inseminated did not conceive. Subsequent cycle length indicated that luteolysis occurred in only one heifer.Data suggest that alfaprostol is an effective luteolytic agent in cyclic beef heifers after Day 4 and that two injections 12 days apart will effectively synchronize estrus in heifers when distributed throughout the cycle at the first injection without affecting conception rate.  相似文献

Twenty eight prepuberal Charolais-Angus cross heifers approximately 15 months old and averaging 334 kg were implanted intravaginally with either a placebo (control, 9 heifers) or progesterone containing implant (treated, 19 heifers). Implants were left in place 3 days. Seventeen heifers (8 controls and 9 treated) retained implants. Plasma progesterone concentrations were < .4 ng/ml in control heifers and 1.5 +/- .59 ng/ml in treated heifers while implants were in place. Seven heifers, all in the treated group, were observed in estrus within 4 days after implant removal. All but one heifer observed in estrus had elevated plasma progesterone concentrations 12 days after implant removal. None of the heifers not observed in estrus had elevated progesterone levels at this time. This study indicates that low levels of exogenous progesterone (1 to 2 ng/ml plasma for 3 days) will induce estrus in prepuberal heifers following its withdrawal.  相似文献

One hundred and twenty crossbred Angus heifers, after exhibiting a 17- to 23-d estrous cycle, were placed into six groups of 20 heifers each and administered 2 ml i.m. propylene glycol containing either 0 (controls), 3.75, 7.5, 15.0 or 30.0 mg of luprostiol, or saline containing 0.5 mg cloprostenol (Groups 1 through 6, respectively). Heifers were observed for estrus every 6 h and all treatments were given 6.5 to 8.0 d after heifers were observed in standing estrus. Blood samples were collected after treatments from 10 heifers in each groups. Blood serum was assayed for progesterone. The synchronization period was considered to be 120 h after administration of luprostiol or cloprostenol. There were 0, 16, 17, 18, 20 and 18 heifers observed in estrus during the synchronization period in Groups 1 through 6, respectively. Progesterone concentrations in blood serum dropped below 1 ng/ml in 0, 8, 9, 10, 10 and 10 of the heifers from which blood samples had been taken in the six groups. All heifers observed in estrus were artificially inseminated. During the synchronization period, 0, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 10 heifers conceived in Groups 1 through 6, respectively. The interval from injection to estrus for the 89 heifers that exhibited estrus in the synchronization period averaged 49.0 h and was not different among the luprostiol and cloprostenol treated groups. Control heifers returned to estrus an average of 13.2 d after the treatment. The number of heifers that conceived at first insemination, regardless of when estrus occurred, was 16, 15, 16, 16, 16 and 12, and the total number that conceived at the first and second inseminations was 18, 18, 17, 19, 19 and 16 for Groups 1 through 6, respectively. Based on serum progesterone concentration and/or interval from treatment to estrus, 15 and 30 mg of luprostiol effectively regressed corpora lutea (100%) when administered between 6.5 and 8.0 d after estrus, and the estrous response and conception rate for these two groups equalled or exceeded that of the control and cloprostenol groups.  相似文献

Rectal fecal samples were collected daily on 10 consecutive days in November 2004 from 11 weaned beef heifers to assess daily variation in fecal oocyst count and species composition. Subsequent samples were collected from the same animals on 15 April 2005 and 9 June 2005. Oocyst numbers were determined by the modified McMaster's test, and species were identified by examination of oocysts recovered with the Wisconsin sugar flotation technique. Soil samples were collected from the heifer pasture on 8 June 2005, and oocysts were quantified and identified to species. Mean fecal oocyst counts varied little at all sampling dates ranging from 134-377 oocysts/g. Ten Eimeria spp. were identified in fecal samples collected in November and April and 11 in June. Eimeria bovis was the most common species identified at all samplings. Mean species composition showed little variation during the 10-day sampling period in November, remained similar in April, and varied slightly in June. Twelve Eimeria spp. were identified in soil samples in proportions similar to those seen in fecal samples. The results indicate that clinically normal weanling beef heifers are likely to be infected with a diverse, but relatively stable, community of Eimeria spp.  相似文献

Crossbred beef heifers (N = 36) were assigned to one of three treatment groups: untreated controls (C; N = 15); Group R4, treated with pig relaxin (1.0 mg i.m.) 4 days pre partum (N = 11); or Group R7, treated with pig relaxin (1.0 mg i.m.) 7 days pre partum (N = 10). Bioactivity of the pig relaxin (UMC-R-P8) was determined by the mouse interpubic ligament assay to be greater than or equal to 3000 U/mg, both before and after the experiment was conducted. Peripheral serum immunoreactive relaxin values were 7.5, 3.4, 2.5, and 1.5 ng/ml at 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after injection of relaxin, respectively. Gestation lengths were 282.9 +/- 1.1, 285.5 +/- 1.3 and 285.6 +/- 1.5 days for Groups C, R4 and R7 (C vs R4 + R7; P congruent to 0.08). Calving difficulty score (1 to 4) tended to be greater (P congruent to 0.08) for Group R4 and R7 heifers (C vs R4 + R7; 1.3 +/- 0.24 vs 1.75 +/- 0.28 + 2.04 +/- 0.32), but the incidences of dystocia and retained placentae were not influenced by treatment (P greater than or equal to 0.10). The mean concentration and concentration profile of daily serum progesterone, oestradiol-17 beta, dihydroprostaglandin F-2 alpha and relaxin were not affected by treatment from 6 days pre partum through 2 days post partum. Cervical diameter, cervical softness score, pelvic measurements, and vulva opening length during the periparturient period were not affected (P greater than or equal to 0.10) by treatment, but all of these characteristics changed over time (P less than or equal to 0.01), relative to calving. We conclude that i.m. administration of pig relaxin (greater than or equal to 3000 U) does not effectively alter periparturient characteristics of beef heifers. Discrepancies between these results and those reported for intracervical administration cannot be readily explained.  相似文献
