Two alternative models are used to explain maintenance of polymorphism of B chromosomes (Bs) in populations of a great number of species. The parasitic model suggests deleterious effects of Bs on fitness of carriers, while the heterotic model assumes that, in the absence of drive, equilibrium is produced by beneficial effects of Bs at low numbers. In order to determine the potential contribution of Bs to genetic differentiation and diversity, four populations of Apodemus flavicollis, differing in frequency of Bs (from 0.23 to 0.38) and settled in ecologically different habitats, were analyzed by 471 AFLP markers. Although numerous loci were demonstrated to be population specific, none of them was associated with individuals with Bs. AMOVA showed that the presence of Bs does not affect population differentiation, pointing to greater genetic similarity of Bs to A chromosomes. The greatest genetic diversity (0.241) was found in the population settled in optimal conditions for this species featured by the lowest frequency of animals with Bs (0.23). We found that the majority of loci marked as loci under directional selection, are characteristic of either a population with lower or one with a higher frequency of Bs. Several loci detected as outliers were associated with environmental variables that could directly and/or indirectly influence population dynamics of A. flavicollis. Thus, we suggest that the different frequency of Bs carriers in populations is related to adaptive differentiation to diverse habitats, which is in accordance with the heterotic model of Bs maintenance.  相似文献

A karyotype analysis of the Apodemus peninsulae (n = 355) from 41 trapping points from the Russian Far East has allowed us to identify B chromosomes in 87.9% of the animals, 61.7% of which are mosaics. Different levels of variability in the B chromosome numbers have been studied, including both the inter- and intrapopulational, as well as intraindividual variability (mosaicism). It was found that the frequencies of the occurrence of individuals with B chromosomes and mosaicism between different population samples were not constant. The range of the modal B chromosome number variability and variation of the xB index (zero to four; on average, the xB amounted to 1.67) were studied for the first time in different samples and populations of this species. Individuals with the predominant numbers of B chromosome (as a rule, zero to two) were revealed in both groups of animals (with stable and mosaic karyotypes), but the frequency was different in geographical regions. The spectra of B chromosome variability were wider in mosaics (zero to seven) compared to animals with stable karyotypes (zero to four). The importance of this for species of the high frequency of individuals with B chromosomes and with mosaicism has been discussed. The adaptive role of the low number of B chromosomes (one to two), as well as the imbalance of the B chromosome system for the species as a whole is assumed.  相似文献

B chromosomes are found in almost all populations of the yellow-necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (Rodentia, Mammalia). Their effects on developmental homeostasis in this species were analyzed using morphological nonmetric traits (number of foramina) in a sample of 218 animals from locality Mt Jastrebac in the former Yugoslavia. Variations of the parameters of developmental homeostasis (the degree of fluctuating asymmetry--FA, the number of asymmetrical characters per individual--NA, and the total phenotypic variability--PV) were examined in three groups: in animals without Bs, with one B chromosome, and with more than one B chromosome. Significant differences in the level of FA between groups of animals were found for two characters. Carriers of one B chromosome displayed the highest level of phenotypic variability. Parameters of developmental stability (DS) were monitored in the population in which significant variations in the frequency of animals with Bs (fB) were established during the season earlier. The FA levels for four foramina out of a total of 12 examined followed the changes of frequencies of animals with Bs. Furthermore, a significant seasonal correlation between NA and fB was found. The presence of B does not cause a disturbance of homeostasis in a way that allows changes in homeostasis to be directly related to B chromosome's presence. However, carriers of B react differently to environmental changes than do noncarriers.  相似文献

Twenty-one native populations (1120 individuals) of maize from Northern Argentina were studied. These populations, which belong to 13 native races, were cultivated at different altitudes (80-3620 m). Nineteen of the populations analyzed showed B chromosome (Bs) numerical polymorphism. The frequency of individuals with Bs varied from 0 to 94%. The number of Bs per plant varied from 0 to 8 Bs, with the predominant doses being 0, 1, 2, and 3. Those populations with varying number of Bs showed a positive and statistically significant correlation of mean number of Bs with altitude. The DNA content, in plants without Bs (A-DNA)(2n = 20), of 17 populations of the 21 studied was determined. A 36% variation (5.0-6.8 pg) in A-DNA content was found. A significant negative correlation between A-DNA content and altitude of cultivation and between A-DNA content and mean number of Bs was found. This indicates that there is a close interrelationship between the DNA content of A chromosomes and doses of Bs. These results suggest that there is a maximum limit to the mass of nuclear DNA so that Bs are tolerated as long as this maximum limit is not exceeded.  相似文献

Information on B chromosomes of six subspecies of A. peninsulae Thomas, 1906, from 79 local populations of Russia (Siberia, Altai, Buryatia and the Far East), Mongolia, China, Korea and Japan (Hokkaido) is reviewed. The frequency of animals with B chromosomes is higher in this taxon than in other mammals and ranges from 0.4 up to 1.0, excluding two insular populations (Sakhalin Island and Stenin Island, Primorye) where Bs were not found. The B chromosome polymorphism shows four levels of variation in number (intraindividual mosaicism, intrapopulational and interpopulational), as well as variability in size, morphology and differential staining. Geographic variation was found among populations for these cytogenetic characteristics and, in some cases, it coincided with subspecies distribution. Comparative chromosome banding of micro and macro Bs illuminates possible pathways for their origin.  相似文献

Specimens belonging to two fish species genus Rhamdia were cytogenetically analysed from seven localities in Brazil and Argentina. In addition to the 58 chromosomes of the basic karyotype, one to five metacentric B chromosomes were observed carrying conspicuous heterochromatic blocks on the distal regions of both chromosome arms. These B chromosomes are mitotically stable and, in the two best-sampled populations in R. hilarii (Lobo and 29 reservoirs), they showed frequency distributions fitting a binomial distribution, though Bs were more frequent in the latter. The presence of B chromosomes with the same appearance in R. quelen suggests an ancient origin for these B chromosomes, presumably prior to speciation from a common ancestor.  相似文献

In previous papers we found that the frequency of B chromosomes in native races of maize varies considerably in different populations. Moreover, we found genotypes that control high and low transmission rates (TR) of B chromosomes in the Pisingallo race. In the present work crosses were made to determine whether the genes controlling B-TR are located on the normal chromosome set (As) or on the B chromosomes (Bs). We made female f.0B × male m.2B crosses between and within high (H) and low (L) B-TR groups. The Bs were transmitted on the male side in all cases. The mean B-TR from the progeny of f.0B (H) × m.2B (H) and f.0B (H) × m.2B (L) crosses was significantly higher than that from f.0B (L) × m.2B (L) and f.0B (L) × m.2B (H) crosses. The results show that the B-TR of the crosses corresponds to the H or L B-TR of the 0B female parents irrespective of the Bs of the male parent. This indicates that B-TR is genetically controlled by the 0B female parent and that these genes are located on the A chromosomes.  相似文献

The effect of B chromosomes (Bs) on various components of vigour and fertility inAegilops speltoides was studied. We designed three types of synthetic populations. In the first type we compared plants from the localities Haifa (which has Bs in nature) and Ashkelon (which has not). Non significant differences were found between the plants from both populations, and between B carriers and non carriers among Haifa individuals. In the second synthetic population we compared 0B, 1B, 2B, 3B and 5B plants from Haifa. We found that vigour variables were not affected by the presence of Bs, while fertility variables were significantly correlated with B number, in such a way that 1B plants produce more grains per plant than any other constitution, while 5Bs produce a remarkable deleterious effect. In the third type of synthetic populations we compared plants with 0B and 1B, 0B and 2B, 0B and 3B, and 0B and 5B. In this case we also found that 1B plants were the most fertile, but the variation of reproductive fitness was higher from plot to plot within the same B class than among B classes. We conclude that the effect of B chromosomes on the fitness variables that we have estimated is close to neutrality in this species. We discuss the relation between the strength of the mechanism of accumulation and the deleterious effects of B chromosomes.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the possible effects of rye B chromosomes (Bs) on synapsis and metaphase-I associations of the A set, a comparative study between pachytene and metaphase-I-cells of rye plants carrying different numbers of Bs (0–8) has been carried out. The number of Bs was found to be positively correlated with the frequency of synaptic irregularities of the A set, i.e. multivalents and foldback pairing, and with the frequency of pachytene interlockings. It is proposed that interlockings are the origin of these irregularities because both appeared in close proximity in many nuclei. Examples of A-B pairing are described. The frequency of synaptic abnormalities seems to be unrelated to the mean of A chromosome-bound arms at metaphase I.  相似文献

The diploid chromosome number of the Chinese raccoon dog varies from 54 (no B chromosomes) to 58 (4 B chromosomes). The B chromosomes are totally heterochromatic. An electron microscopic study was made of the synaptonemal complexes (SC) in spermatocytes of these animals. The SC karyotype consists of 27 regular chromosome pairs (autosomes and the sex chromosomes) plus the B chromosomes. The Bs pair effectively with one another at pachytene, but the SC axes of the B chromosomes are much denser than those of the A chromosomes. Depending on the number of Bs, both bivalents and multivalents have been observed. When three B chromosomes are present in a cell, parallel alignment of all three SCs can be seen. Formation of multivalents indicates high homology among these supernumerary heterochromatic chromosomes. Fusiform bulges are found along unpaired regions of all chromosomes which are particularly pronounced in diplotene.  相似文献

The chromosomal behaviour at meiosis in pollen mother cells of 33 sample materials from 4 species in Agropyron Gaerm. distributed over various regions in China were observed. We. found that B chromosomes were mainly-present in A. mongolicum Keng (2n=2x=14) and were absent in the tetraploid ,A. cristarum (L.) Gaertn. (2n=4x=28) and ,A. michnoi Roshev. (2n=4x=28). Of all A. desertorum (Fisch.) Schult. (2n=4x=28) populations, they were present in 40%. The pairing between even numbers of B chromosomes usually occured at diakinesis where as uneven numbers of B chromosomes at metaphase 1. B chromosomes at anaphase I separated at random. The Fagging Bs tended to reach two poles by chromatids through precocious division of Bs. The pairing and chiasma frequencies between A chromosomes were increased by the larger numbers of Bs. The relationship between B chromosomes and species ploidy, the homeology among Bs, etc were discussed.  相似文献

2B rye plants selected for high (H) or low (L) B transmission rate were studied at pachytene and metaphase I of meiosis to determine the relationship between synapsis, bivalents at metaphase I, and B transmission rate. The results show that the 2 B chromosomes (Bs) form bivalents at pachytene in both the H and L lines, whereas the frequency of bivalents at metaphase I is much higher in the H than in the L line. This demonstrates that B transmission is mainly related to the proper association of Bs at metaphase I, as well as that synapsis of the 2 Bs in the L line is normal, but the bivalent is not consolidated by a chiasma in most cases. Crosses were made between 2B plants of the H and L lines in all combinations (H x H, H x L, L x H, and L x L) to obtain 4B plants. Similarly, bivalent formation at pachytene and metaphase I was studied. The results show that 4B plants of the H x H and L x L classes differ significantly at pachytene and metaphase I since the former forms more bivalents. The heterozygous 4 Bs of the H x L and L x H classes show intermediate values. The relation H x H > H x L > L x H > L x L was consistently found for the variables transmission rate, bivalents at pachytene, bivalents at metaphase I, and B mean chiasma frequency. A maternal effect was also found. Our data suggest that there are two separate mechanisms acting upon synapsis and chiasma formation in H and L B chromosomes: (i) there is variable efficiency of the control of synapsis at early stages of meiosis; and (ii) there is variable efficiency of the control of the number of chiasmata.  相似文献

Earlier, it has been demonstrated that wild populations of a Japanese harvestman Metagagrella tenuipes (Arachnida: Opiliones) are polymorphic for B chromosomes. In this paper, we present results of a study of the morphology and mitotic and meiotic behavior of the Bs. The B chromosomes varied considerably in size and proportion of eu- and heterochromatin. The single nucleolus organizing region, found in males, was located on a chromosome of the A complement. Some intercell variation in number of Bs may be explained by accidental chromosome losses during chromosome preparation. We also found no intertissue variation in number of Bs. There were also no differences in mean number of B chromosomes per individual among males and females, adult and subadult harvestmen. Segregation of Bs in mitotic and meiotic divisions was nonrandom; B chromosomes tended to segregate equally between daughter cells. The results obtained provide no support for the hypothesis of existence of B accumulation mechanism in this species.  相似文献

Isofemale lines of Pseudococcus affinis (Maskell ) differ in their ability to maintain B chromosomes (Bs) due to the presence of genotypes that affect the rate of transmission (k) of the Bs. The nature of these genotypes was analyzed by comparing ks of males carrying the same B and the same paternal genome (which is heterochromatic), but differing in their maternal genome. In males from line L-60, which maintained the B at a frequency of over 4.0 Bs per individual, the mean k varied between 0.7 and 0.95 in different experiments. Over the same period, the mean k of males with a maternal genome from one of two lines in which the B was rapidly lost (L-119), increased from 0.5 to 0.9, and that of the other line (L-230) decreased gradually from 0.6 to less than 0.1. The ks appear not to be correlated with the geographical or parental origin of the B. The observed changes in k are attributed at least in part to changes in the frequency of genotypes (alleles) which can drastically reduce the transmission of the B and, when present in high frequency, can lead to its rapid loss. The frequency distribution of the ks of sons of F(1) females from the cross L-230 x L-60 suggests that the two lines differ at two unlinked loci with additive effects on k. The genome of L-119 also caused the B to undergo nondisjunction in about 10% of the primary spermatocytes. A comparison between the ks of the males tested and those of males from a natural population suggests that in that population the B is "parasitic" and that the frequency of transmission-reducing genotypes is low.  相似文献

Psathyropus tenuipes (= Metagagrella tenuipes) is a harvestman that harbors B chromosomes with extremely high frequency (individuals without Bs are only 1% of the total number of specimens so far examined) and high numbers (mean number of Bs per individual is about 4). Geographic variations of the number of Bs and external morphology of the species and the relationship between them were studied. A northward increase in the number of Bs was detected throughout the Japanese Islands, though the number also varied considerably locally. Latitudinal gradients were also found in some external characters, while there were no correlations between those external morphologies and the number of Bs. Principal component analysis using eight morphological data for 21 populations revealed four geographical groups that reflect actual location of the populations. Populations along the Seto Inland Sea were characterized by a lower number of Bs than those in other areas. Seasonal change was also found in a population (Yatsukami in western Honshu) in both 1994 and 1995 for the number of Bs, though the number in the same population was stable at least throughout later postembryonic stages in both 1997 and 1998. Embryos contained fewer numbers of Bs than adults, suggesting that females of the species tend to lay eggs with fewer numbers of Bs.  相似文献

We tested the centromeric drive theory of karyotypic evolution in the grasshopper Dichroplus pratensis, which is simultaneously polymorphic for eight Robertsonian fusions and two classes of B chromosomes. A logistic regression analysis performed on 53 natural populations from Argentina revealed that B chromosomes are more probably found in populations with a higher proportion of acrocentric chromosomes, as the theory predicts. Furthermore, frequencies of B-carrying individuals are significantly negatively correlated with the mean frequency of different Robertsonian fusions per individual. No significant correlations between presence/absence or frequency of Bs, and latitude or altitude of the sampled populations, were found. We thus provide the first intraspecific evidence supporting the centromeric drive theory in relation to the establishment of B chromosomes in natural populations.  相似文献

Cytological analysis of microsporogenesis in 72 popcorn plants, comprising nine from the original population (CMS-43, S(0)) and 63 from seven cycles of self-fertilization (S(1) to S(7)), one plant of S(0) generation (plant 2) was identified with B chromosomes. The number of B chromosomes varied from two to three in the same anther. The pattern of chromosome pairing and meiotic behavior of Bs were similar to those found in other plant species. The presence of B chromosomes did not affect chiasma frequency and chiasma distribution in A chromosomes. This is the first report of B chromosomes in popcorn.  相似文献

Karyotypes of 47 individuals of the wood mice Apodemus peninsulae from two reserves in Primorskii krai (Kedrovaya Pad' and Ussuriiskii) were studied during spring, summer, and autumn. In each population, variation in the number of B-chromosomes (2n = 48 + 0-5B) as well as the intratissue mosaicism determined by variation of the number, size and morphology of supernumerary chromosomes were described. Animals that have one dotlike B-chromosome were first described in both populations as rare variants. Individuals that have bone-marrow cell clones with two or three B-chromosomes were found to be predominant in the populations of Primorskii krai. The number of clones varied from one to three per animal. The frequency of mosaics showed seasonal variation. In the population of the Ussuriiskii reserve, a sharp increase in the frequency of animals with a stable karyotype was detected in autumn, at the phase of increased numbers. The variation for mosaicism was suggested to correlate with the population numbers in mice and to indicate the genetic differences between generations of the population.  相似文献

B chromosome variation in nine Moroccan populations of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans was analysed for 3 consecutive years. In addition to B1, which was the predominant B chromosome in all nine populations, we found 15 other B variants, albeit at very low frequency. Eight variants were found in adults caught in the wild, four appeared in adults reared in the laboratory and seven were found in embryo progeny of controlled crosses between a 0B male and a B-carrying female. Some variants were found in more than one kind of material. At least the seven B variants that appeared in embryo progeny of females carrying a different B type arose de novo through mutation of the maternal B chromosome. The mutation rate of B chromosomes was 0.73%, on average, which explains the high variety of morphs and banding patterns found. The most frequent de novo mutations observed in these chromosomes were centromere misdivision with or without chromatid nondisjunction, which generates iso-B-chromosomes or telocentric Bs, respectively, as well as translocations with A and B chromosomes and deletions. But the whole variation observed, including that found in adult individuals, suggests that other mutations such as duplications, inversions and centric fusions do usually affect B chromosomes. Finally, B chromosome mutation rate was remarkably similar in both Moroccan and Spanish populations, which suggests that it might be dependent on B chromosome intrinsic factors.  相似文献
