SUMMARY. The growth of Austropotamobius pallipes was studied in the River Ouse during 1976–78. Growth of mature crayfish (>2.5 cm carapace length) was followed by determining the relationship between the growth increment at moult and premoult carapace length, together with the frequency of moulting of different categories of crayfish. These data are supplemented by the recapture of marked individuals and the measurement of crayfish held in corves in the river. Growth was limited to the period May–October when water temperatures exceeded 10°C. Growth rates of male and female crayfish are similar until maturity is reached, thereafter males moult twice per year and the majority of females moult once. No crayfish in excess of 3.7 cm carapace length has been observed to moult more than once per year. Growth of juveniles (<2.5 cm carapace length) was estimated from size frequency distributions constructed from regularly taken samples. Growth rates of juveniles showed great variation both between and within year classes. In the hot dry summer of 1976, juveniles exhibited faster growth rates (instantaneous growth rates (G) for 0+ and 1 + crayfish were 0.029 and 0.013 mg mg−1 day−1. respectively) than in other years. Laboratory experiments on the effect of temperature on the growth rate of 0 + crayfish were undertaken; for crayfish at 15°C. G = 0.0138 (0–53 days) and at 10°C, G = 0.0003 (0–90 days). Crayfish held at 10°C failed to undergo a single successful moult. At 20°C crayfish exhibited exponential growth over the first 40 days, with G = 0.0189. declining thereafter to G = 0.012 (40–90 days).  相似文献

The crab Halicarcinus planatus is the only hymenosomatid crab that inhabits the southern tip of South America and is the only decapod species that reproduces twice a year in the Beagle Channel. In this article, we study the moult cycle in the field (moult frequency, analysis of size frequency distribution) and linked it with growth studied in the laboratory (absolute and per cent growth increment, Hiatt function). Hiatt functions were similar for males and females. Moult frequency was seasonal: in early austral spring and in austral summer. In females, the pubertal moult is the terminal moult, whereas males continue moulting after attaining the size of morphometric maturity. Moult increment was highly variable. The relationship between absolute moult increment and crab size was described by a quadratic function. Per cent growth increment decreased with size, and relationships were different for each sex: linear for females and quadratic for males. Seven and eight modal groups explained the size frequency distributions for females and males from the field, respectively, and revealed the existence of two cohorts of recruits per year. Further modal analysis was mainly hampered by the high variability of size increment that could make any moulting individual fall in its own or one of two following modal groups. The antagonism between growth and reproduction was evident in small males. We hypothesize that the terminal pubertal moult is an advantageous feature that allows females to maximize their investment in reproduction after their terminal moult, which allows this species to have two spawnings per year.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Embryonic durations and post embryonic growth rates of Caridina nilotica were determined under laboratory conditions at constant temperatures near 18, 24 and 30°C. Embryonic durations and intermoult intervals were negative curvilinear functions of temperature. At a given temperature moulting frequency varied inversely with shrimp size and slight sexual differences were apparent. Moulting frequency of berried females was governed by the temperature-specific embryonic durations. Growth rates were determined from changes in carapace length (CL) of individual shrimps (laboratory) or batches of shrimps (field enclosures) over 1 month and these data were used to calculate temperature-specific life-long growth curves for males and females. Growth in body mass was estimated indirectly from the carapace length-mass relationship of C. nilotica. On average, males grew marginally faster than females during the first 2 months of life, but growth of males larger than CL= 4 mm was considerably depressed relative to that of females. Inflexions in growth rate, apparently related to the onset of sexual maturity, were apparent in both sexes. Under laboratory conditions, the growth rate of males increased with temperature, but temperature-related differences were not as marked in females. Notwithstanding the more rapid moulting rate at 30°C the growth rate of females was slightly slower at 30 than at 24°C as a result of marginally but significantly smaller per moult growth increments observed at 30°C in animals up to CL= 5.5 mm. Possible reasons for this depressed growth are discussed. Growth rates of animals in field enclosures in Lake Sibaya over 1 month in winter (20 ± 3°C) were generally comparable to those estimated for the 18°C laboratory experiments. Growth rates in enclosures containing tripled standing stocks were almost identical to those containing the naturally occurring biomass of animals, suggesting a non-limited environment at least during the time of the experiment.  相似文献

In Africa, birds inhabiting forested regions are less seasonal in their activities than those from open areas. In order to study annual cycles in forest regions of South western Nigeria, West African Thrushes (Turdus pelios) were mist-netted and banded during the last two weeks of each month. The nest is a cup-shaped structure built out of grasses, herbs, weeds, roots and earth laid out in a clockwise manner. Only the nesting tree and feeding sites were defended during the breeding period. The clutch size was 2.69 +/- 0.20 eggs with a mean incubation period of 14.11 +/- 0.26 days. The mean nestling period was 15 +/- 1.00 days. The nestlings were fed on a variety of plant and animal matter, of which grass seeds and insects were predominant. Moult was found to be protracted with a population moult period of 194 days and a much shorter individual moult period. Moult and breeding periods were spread out: moult period dovetailed into the breeding period. The birds were found to gain weight during the period but they attained their maximum weight in August after the moult period. The lowest weight was recorded in February, during the peak of the dry season, when food availability was lower.  相似文献

Early life history patterns were studied in the caridean shrimp, Campylonotus vagans Bate, 1888, from the subantarctic Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego). As a consequence of very large egg size (minimum 1.4 mm), fecundity was low, ranging from 83 to 608 eggs per female (carapace length [CL] 11-22.5 mm). Egg size increased continuously throughout embryonic development, reaching prior to hatching about 175% of the initial diameter. Due to low daily numbers of larval release, hatching of an egg batch lasted for about 2-3 weeks. The complete larval and early juvenile development was studied in laboratory cultures fed with Artemia sp. nauplii. At 7.0±0.5 °C, development from hatching to metamorphosis lasted for about 6 weeks. It comprised invariably two large zoeal stages and one decapodid, with mean stage durations of 12, 17, and 15 days, respectively. Larvae maintained without food survived on average for 18 days (maximum: 29 days), but did not reach the moult to the zoea II stage. Size increments at ecdysis were low in all larval stages (2.1-3.9%), indicating partial utilisation of internal energy reserves. A clearly higher increment (14%) was observed in the moult from the first to the second juvenile stage. Low fecundity, large size of eggs and larvae, an abbreviated mode of larval development, high larval survival rates during absence of food, demersal behaviour of the early life history stages, and an extended hatching period with low daily release rates are interpreted as adaptations to conditions typically prevailing in subantarctic regions, namely low temperatures (causing long durations of development) in combination with a pronounced seasonality in plankton production (i.e., short periods of food availability).  相似文献

Populations of Serolis polita Pfeffer and S. cornuta Studer were studied over a continuous period of 2 yr at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. Moult classes were recognized by a combination of morphology and size-frequency analysis and the method is described. The size of moult classes was very stable for S. polita but showed marked annual variation in S. cornuta. The moulting regimes of six other species of Serolis are discussed. An assessment was made of the losses associated with ecdysis and it was found that ≈25% of the dry weight and 42% of the ash content was lost at each moult. The seasonal breeding regime allowed the recognition of cohorts in the population and the growth rate was determined. In S. polita, growth in winter was significantly slower than in summer, and this is considered to be due to reduced food availability. The growth of Antarctic species of Serolis is compared with that of temperate isopods, and it is found that the former tend to show larger body size, slower growth, and greater longevity. All three features are discussed as symptoms of adaptation to the polar environment.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Newly-laid eggs of Coenagrion puella (L.) from a pond near Herzogenburg (Lower Austria) were kept at constant water temperatures (range c .3.5°C to c .28°C)in the laboratory. Hatching success varied with temperature; no eggs hatched below 12°C and nearly all hatched at c .l6°C. Hatching time decreased with increasing temperature and the relationship between the two variables within the range 12–28 °C was well described by a power law. The length of the hatching period was less than 12 days. Hatching times estimated from the power-law equations and those obtained in the field experiments were similar. Therefore both the hatching time and the length of the hatching period in the field could be estimated from the laboratory data for the range 12–28°C.
2. The maximum number of instars from egg to imago was 11; the average body length increment (mm) per moult was proportionately constant at c .26% and Dyar's rule was applicable. The interval between moults decreased with increasing temperature up to the seventh instar and the relationship between the two variables within the range 12–28°C was well described by a power law. The moulting interval for instars 8–11 ranged from 23 to 48 days and was relatively independent of temperature. No moulting occurred at temperatures below 12°C.
3. Larval growth was logistic in the laboratory and variations in mean logistic growth rate (range 0–2.5% length day−1) were related to mean temperature with no growth at temperatures <12°C. Larval growth rates in pond experiments were similar to those estimated from laboratory data, and therefore the regression equations obtained from the laboratory experiments are probably applicable to larval growth in the field.

ARGOS satellite telemetry and Global Location Sensors (geolocators) were used to identify the moult locations and the winter foraging dispersal of Adélie penguins after they left their breeding colonies on Signy Island in the South Orkney Islands. Animals were tracked during the period December 2004 to October 2005. All birds displayed a similar pattern of migratory behaviour, remaining away from colonies for approximately 9 months, at distances of up to 2,235 km. Moult locations were within the pack ice. Mean daily travel speeds to the moult locations were significantly faster when moving through open water than through pack ice. Moult occurred during February/March within a narrow latitudinal range (65–71°S), at a mean distance of 126 km from the ice edge; the mean duration of individual moult was c. 18.6 days. After moult, penguins spent the subsequent winter months moving north or north-eastward within the expanding winter pack ice, at a mean distance of 216 km from the ice edge, and in areas with ice cover >80%. The penguins returned to the vicinity of their colony between September 26 and October 22, 2005. This dependence of Adélie penguins on sea ice habitat suggests that any further reductions in sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea region would potentially have important impacts on the population processes of this pagophilic species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of somatotrophs and lactotrophs and conduct a morphometrical analysis of immunoreactive somatotrophs and lactotrophs in the pituitary glands of White Leghorn Hens (Gallus domesticus) during the period of induced moult. We divided the periods of induced moulting into three phases viz. 7, 14 and 21 days. The labeled alkalinephsphatase method with anti-GH (growth hormone) and anti-PRL (prolactin) as a primary antibody was used to detect somatotrophs and lactotrophs, in the midsagital sections of chicken adenohypophysis. Immunohistochemistry showed that somatotrophs are not only confined to the cephalo-caudal axis but can also be found in the caudal lobe; while lactotrophs were distributed in both lobes of the anterior pituitary gland at all stages of moulting (7, 14 and 21 days). Lactotrophs were of different shapes but somatotrophs were oval to round in morphology. At the given stages of induced moulting, some hypertrophied lactotrophs were also present after 7 days of induced moult in the anterior pituitary gland. However, there were moulting-related changes: from 7 to 21 days of induced moulting the immunoreactive-PRL cell population decreased, while the mean lactotroph size was more than that of somatotrophs. Basic quantitative and morphological information relating to somatotrophs and lactotrophs during the period of induced moult in laying hens is reported here and the changes brought about by induced moulting are restricted to PRL positive cells rather than GH positive cells.Key words: Moult, pituitary gland, somatotrophs, lactotrophs, chicken.  相似文献

Freshwater inflows from river diversions may affect nekton populations by altering the salinity and temperature of estuarine waters. To investigate the influence of these environmental variables on the growth and survival rates of brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus and white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus, we conducted field experiments in May and September 2007 to expose experimental animals to the range of different combinations of salinity and water temperature that commonly occur in an estuarine environment. Growth rates for shrimp held in mesocosms for approximately 7 days were compared among four locations and three treatments; locations were identified by the dominant marsh vegetation and distance from the Gulf of Mexico (low to high salinity: Intermediate, Brackish, Saline UE = Saline Up Estuary, Saline DE = Saline Down Estuary). At each location, the treatments were replicated four times and included shallow water with additional food, shallow water without food added, and deeper water (an attempt to expose animals to lower temperatures). Our experiments were designed to test the null hypothesis that shrimp growth and survival rates did not differ by location or treatment. Both brown shrimp and white shrimp grew more slowly at the Intermediate than higher salinity locations. Potential prey (benthic infauna) biomass was relatively low at both the Intermediate and Brackish locations in May, and both shrimp species consistently grew faster in mesocosms where food was added. We conclude that reduced growth in low salinity environments is likely due to the combined effects of increased metabolic costs and less food in these areas. River diversions that reduce estuarine salinities over a large portion of available habitat during peak recruitment periods may reduce overall growth rates and shrimp productivity in the affected areas.  相似文献

Moult in Malayan Barn Owls Tyto alba was studied in two pairs of wild collected captive birds and from feathers taken from nest sites throughout peninsular Malaysia.
Post-juvenile captive birds moulted nearly to completion prior to first breeding, beginning with P6 at a mean age of 301.5 days. This contrasted with the only other study of moult in captive Barn Ow-Is in Germany when moult began at an age of 400 days, and then continued for a protracted period of two years separated by a suspension of moult during the normal breeding season.
The complex sequence of moult in primaries and secondaries both in the Malayan and German birds was similar.
Moult among adult Malayan birds in the wild showed a broad and somebyhat irregular seasonal trend With lower incidence during peak breeding periods.  相似文献

Recruitment and growth of juvenile yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus australis Günther (Sparidae), an economically important species, were examined in an intermittently open Australian estuary for 13 months. Fish had a mean fork length of 77.9 (± SE 9.5) mm after 1 year. Growth rates were faster than those found in previous studies in permanently open estuaries and appeared to be dependent upon the water temperature, which ranged from 0.04 mm/day in winter to 0.67 mm/day during summer. However, periods of slower growth may also reflect the emigration of larger fish from the cohort when the estuary was open and which coincided with lower water temperatures. Growth and length-at-age of fish using length-frequency data may be estimated more accurately in intermittently open estuaries because the time of recruitment can be determined, especially when the estuary opening period is short.  相似文献

A gradient in H. azteca growth was created by reducing food ration. Tests were initiated with neonates (48 h old) and the effects of an altered food ration on survival and growth were examined after 10 and 49 days. Growth rates decreased significantly with reduced food ration (10 day growth rates ranged from 1.2 µg d–1 in the highest feeding regime to 0.5 µg d–1 in lowest feeding regime). Survival after 10 days was not affected by ration, ranging from 86 to 96%. A growth rate of 1.2 µg d–1 at day 10 resulted in mean dry weight (1.0 mg), survival (62%) and reproduction (9.3 neonates/female) at day 49 similar to reported values for this species. Growth rates 0.9 µg d–1 at day 10 corresponded to significantly reduced reproduction at day 49 (i.e., < 1 neonate per female). Time to the onset of amplexus increased with decreasing ration suggesting reduced ration may have delayed reproduction.  相似文献

This paper describes the pattern and rate of the complete moult cycle in the Redbilled Oxpecker Buphagus er ythrorhynchus. The average duration of primary moult in adult birds was 340 days and the mean time to replace a primary feather was calculated as 34 days. The moult of the secondaries is initiated at two points, at the first secondary and at the innermost secondary. Secondary moult takes seven months. The differentiated inner secondaries moult in the normal middle/inner/outer passeriform fashion. The rectrices moulted only once annually. The two body moult cycles correspond with the moult of the differentiated inner secondaries. First-year birds undergo a partial postjuvenile feather replacement at three months of age.  相似文献

Moult of some palaearctic migrant passerines was studied at a wintering site in northern Ghana, West Africa. We present data on moult pattern and estimated moult duration for a sample of species. Savi's Warbler Locustella luscinioides , Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator and probably Grasshopper Warbler Locustella naevia deviated from the ordinary descendent moult sequence. Different measures of moult speed (moult speed of retrapped individuals, growth of individual feathers, wing raggedness and first date of completion of moult) showed unexpectedly rapid moult among individuals of several species, notably the Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus and the Sedge Warbler A. schoenobaenus. The rapid moult might be an adaptation to a limited period of abundant food which comes to an end at the beginning of the dry season.  相似文献

Penaeid prawns M. dobsoni of two different size ranges were ablated both unilaterally (UEA) and bilaterally (BEA) and subjected to individual study. The UEA prawns consumed almost the same amount of food as the control prawns in the size group, 35-40mm, but consumed about 57.8% more food than the control prawns in the larger size group, 48-53mm. Growth was estimated as length and weight changes and significant variation was observed. The moult rate and dry moult weight showed marked differences. Average intermoult period increases with second ablation. Dry weight of moult in every succeeding moult was found to decrease irrespective of the level of ablation. Unilateral eyestalk ablation resulted in increase in dry weight whereas bilateral eyestalk ablation reduced the dry weight of moult and this decrease in the rate increased after each subsequent moult. In the larger size group, values of protein efficiency ratio (PER) were almost same as that of the lower size group. The UEA prawns exhibited highest conversion efficiency. The production rate of UEA prawns was 84% more than that of the control whereas BEA prawns indicated negative production. The same trend followed for net growth efficiency also. The results suggest that unilateral eyestalk ablation can be resorted to accelerate growth and conversion efficiency. Eyestalk ablation has been frequently resorted in matured forms for inducing maturation of gonads. For the first time attempts have been made to compare between the effects of removing one eyestalk versus two and changes taking place in juvenile forms especially in their physiology related to growth.  相似文献

The commercial catches of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were sampled (May through November 1996) in the Mar Muerto lagoon located between Oaxaca and Chiapas states, Mexico. To measure it's growth rate at the innermost portions of this system, 16,378 length and weight records were obtained. Length fluctuated between 11 and 145 mm, and weights between 0.1 and 26.3 g. The minimum mean size for recruitment to the exploited phase is 45 mm. Organisms leave the lagunar system for recruitment to the marine zone 83-120 mm/length, at an age of 1.5-4.5 months. Analysis of modal progression detected 13 generations inside the lagoon. The growth rates ranged between 0.13 and 1.27 mm/day, with a mean of 0.64 mm/day. The asintotic lengths fluctuated between 105 and 159 mm with a mean of 136 mm, while the asintotic weight fluctuated between 8 and 23 gr with a mean of 15 gr. The parameters of the von Bertalanfy growth model are: L infinity = 136 mm, P infinity = 15 gr, k = 0.0161 mm and to = 5 mm. Both, L infinity and P infinity doesn't represent, at least in this case, the asintótics sizes and weights that the species reach inside the system, but should be interpret like the means sizes and weight that should have the organisms at the time to leave it.  相似文献

Seasonal variability in the growth of larval Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus was examined through otolith microstructure analysis based on the samples collected from the northern side (inner area, IA) and the southern side (outer area, OA) of the Kii Channel from April 2006 to March 2007. Growth trajectories (otolith backcalculated mean standard length of 5 day intervals from 5 days after hatch to 24 days) as well as the most recent 5 day mean growth rate of larvae before capture ( G 5) differed among months. Growth trajectories showed the same pattern as G 5. In IA, mean ± s.d. G 5 ranged from 0·31 ± 0·04 mm day−1 (January) to 0·73 ± 0·06 mm day−1 (October). In OA, mean ± s.d. G 5 ranged from 0·36 ± 0·05 mm day−1 (January) to 0·79 ± 0·11 mm day−1 (August). G 5 values declined from November to January and then started to increase. In general, the seasonal patterns of growth were similar between IA and OA, and a clear seasonal pattern in growth was identified. When the relationships among larval growth rate, sea temperature, zooplankton density and larval density were examined, growth rate was positively related with sea temperature in both areas and not related with the other factors. The similar pattern in growth observed between IA and OA was probably due to the low spatial variability in sea temperature compared to its seasonal variability.  相似文献

Moult of the remiges was studied over eight years in a population of Zebra Finches from southeast Australia. In first-year birds the first primary was lost at mean age of 80 days in both sexes; moult took 204 days to complete in males and 223 in females. Birds hatched in autumn postponed the start of their primary moult until spring. Primaries were replaced slowly in a rigid, non-overlapping, ascending order from #1 to #9 but the secondaries did not display a rigid sequence.
Adult Zebra Finches moulted remiges throughout the year. Primary moult was initiated in any month. Primary moult had a mean duration of 229 days for males and 240 days for females. Primaries moulted in continuous waves: the interval between successive moults in males was –16 days and +6 days in females. Limited food, low temperatures and breeding slowed, but did not stop, wing-moult. Birds caring for eggs and young actively replaced remiges.
The pattern of wing-moult displayed here by Zebra Finches is exceptional for passerines and may be related to the opportunistic breeding strategy necessary in an arid, unpredictable environment. Its presence in the Victorian birds may be non-adaptive.  相似文献
