Modified dredges were used on Aequipecten opercularis (queen scallop) fishing grounds off the Isle of Man in the north Irish Sea to determine seasonal variability in swimming behaviour in queen scallops and its effect on dredge fisheries. Scallops, which evaded dredge capture by swimming up into the water column, were captured by a specially designed net deployed above the dredge gear. The gear was used over a 20-month period and the number and size distribution of queen scallops captured in both the net and dredges were recorded. A subsample of captured scallops was maintained in running seawater tanks and used to assess two components of swimming behaviour, the time taken to respond to stimuli and the number of valve adductions carried out until exhaustion. There was considerable seasonal variability in the proportion of queen scallops that avoided dredge capture by swimming. Very low numbers of queen scallops were found in the net during the winter and spring. Net capture increased in June, and was high throughout the summer and autumn when up to 42% of scallops greater than 55 mm in height, captured in dredges, swam over the dredge mouths. There was a strong positive correlation between seawater temperature and proportion of captured scallops found in the net. Swimming experiments in the laboratory indicated that the observed seasonal variability in net capture was probably a result of changes in the time taken to respond to stimuli, rather than changes in the ability to perform a large number of valve adductions. There was no relationship between reproductive state and the proportion of actively swimming scallops. Analyses of size distributions indicated limited swimming activity in the largest scallops but no effect of epifaunal load was found on the ability of scallops to avoid dredge capture.  相似文献

Substratum un-acclimated juvenile queen scallops (Aequipecten opercularis) (<18 mm and 18-30 mm shell height) were released in equal numbers onto pristine live maerl (PLM), impacted dead maerl (IDM), gravel and sand in choice chambers. Their habitat selection was monitored over a 4-day period in control and predator treatments (utilising Asterias rubens L. and Carcinus maenas (L.)). Microhabitat use of PLM by juvenile queen scallops and the presence of cues in live maerl were also investigated. In control and predator treatments juvenile queen scallops were observed to attach preferentially to PLM than IDM, gravel or sand. Juvenile queen scallops were observed to maintain a more exposed attachment site in the absence of predators but sought refuge within and between maerl nodules in the presence of both predators. Smaller queen scallops (<18 mm shell height) were more efficient at utilising maerl thalli as a refuge. Juvenile A. opercularis showed hierarchical cue responses mediated by predator presence, i.e. responding favourably to a factor associated with live maerl presence irrespective of heterogeneity in the absence of predators but favourably to higher maerl heterogeneity in their presence. If they also preferentially attach to PLM in the field, at some sites where PLM grounds cover large areas, they may thus be considered to constitute ‘nursery areas’. Habitat attachment preference appears to be predetermined and not a result of localised predator avoidance; however, habitat usage changes in the presence of predators. Maerl beds have been shown to be easily damaged by scallop dredging in Scotland and if such nursery areas are being destroyed extensively in the field, this could damage recruitment to localised adult populations.  相似文献

Human damage to biogenic substrata such as maerl has been receiving increasing attention recently. Maerl forms highly biodiverse and heterogeneous habitats composed of loose-lying coralline red algae, which fulfil nursery area prerequisites for queen scallops (Aequipecten opercularis) and other invertebrates. The benefits obtained by queen scallops utilising maerl were poorly understood, so we used both laboratory predation and field tethering experiments to investigate the refuge and growth potential provided by pristine live maerl (PLM) grounds over other common substrata. In aquaria, more juvenile queen scallops (<35 mm shell height) survived on PLM than on gravel substrata in the presence of the crab Carcinus maenas or the starfish Asterias rubens. Field tethering experiments indicated similar survivorship of juvenile queen scallops on PLM than gravel; additionally, their growth rates were similar on both substrata. PLM allows scallops to seek refuge from predators and position themselves to optimise their food supply. Other bivalve refugia have been shown to provide poor food supply as a consequence of their high heterogeneity, yet maerl grounds provide a ‘win-win’ scallop nursery area coupling refuge availability with high food supply.  相似文献

The majority of specimens of the scallop Chlamys opercularis found in Strangford Lough, County Down, Ireland, are infected with a rare and exotic ciliate Licnophora auerbachii. The ciliate is found predominantly on the eyes of the scallop which (together with numerous tentacles) are borne by the middle marginal folds of the mantle. The ciliates are found attached to both the clear cornea covering the lens and also the surrounding pigmented iris, their large food vacuoles often containing black consistently sized granules, particles derived from the pigmented epithelial cells of the scallop eye. These cells are abraded from the surface of the iris and become detached due to the action of the basal disc of L. auerbachii during its clamping and locomotory activities on the eye surface. Scanning electron microscope observations show that the foot region of the ciliate exerts both a suction and abrasive action on the eye and leaves a distinct “footprint” on the eye surface in the form of a saucer-shaped depression. In many of the heavily infected scallops there was evidence of damage to the eyes with consequent loss of pigment and in some instances surface distortion of the eye itself.  相似文献

The present study examined the influence of air exposure at different temperatures: a common perturbation associated with aquaculture handling practices, on immune responses in zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri. Scallops were exposed to air for 2 h, 6 h, 12 h and 24 h at 5 °C, 17 °C and 25 °C respectively. Thereafter, a recovery period of 24 h at 17 °C was applied. Haemocyte mortality, phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of haemocytes, acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in haemocyte lysates were chosen as immunomarkers of anoxic stress. The results showed that an increase of haemocyte mortality and a decrease of phagocytosis and ACP activity were observed after 2 h of air exposure for all temperatures tested. Moreover, a significant increase of ROS production occurred following 2 h of air exposure at 25 °C and 24 h of air exposure at 17 °C. Significant differences were also observed in haemocyte mortality, percentage of phagocytic cells and ACP and SOD activity depending on the temperature of air exposure. Finally, after 24 h of recovery at 17 °C, percentage of phagocytic haemocytes and ACP activity did not return to initial values. ROS production was significantly higher than before the recovery period and initial values for scallops subjected to air exposure at 5 °C. In our study, scallops showed a relative low anoxia tolerance under a high temperature. All the scallops air exposed to 25 °C died after the 6 h sampling. In conclusion, air exposure associated to aquaculture practices was demonstrated to strongly affect functional immune activities of scallop haemocytes, and high temperature air exposure caused reduced survival of scallops.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the rôle of population density of queenright honey bee colonies, and that of the queen bee pheromonal secretions, on the induction and inhibition of swarming queen cup construction during swarming and non-swarming seasons. Construction of queen cups was induced experimentally in overcrowded queenright colonies, during winter, which is a non-swarming season. This construction was induced by high population density of bee workers: above a threshold of 2.3 bee workers/ml there was a relationship between the number of cups constructed and the colony density. During the swarming season a relationship was established between the free volume of a hive (population density) and the number of queen cups constructed: 1.5 cups in a colony that occupied 80,960 ml, compared with 77 cups in a colony hived within a volume of 20, 240 ml. Observations of the queen's movements upon combs in colonies of high and normal population densities showed that in an overcrowded colony the queen bee was almost absent from the bottom edges of the comb, where queen swarming cups and cells are constructed. The tarsal glands of queens are located in the fifth tarsomere and the glandular oily secretion is deposited by the foot-pads upon the combs surface. The rate of secretion by the queen's tarsal glands was about 13 times higher than by those of the workers. A bioassay for testing the inhibitory effects of the queen's glandular extracts on the construction of queen cups was developed. It was based on increasing worker bee population densities, and can be used effectively throughout the year in a subtropical climate. The application of tarsal and mandibular glands' secretion to comb bottom edges in overcrowded colonies (bioassay) caused the inhibition of queen cup construction. None of these two secretions affected construction of these cups when applied separately. We presume that due to colony overcrowding the queen bee is unable to deposit the non-volatile secretions from tarsal glands along the comb edges and that the deficiency of the foot-print pheromone triggers the construction of swarming cups along the non-inhibited areas.  相似文献

Heart activity of Pecten maximus (L.) has been recorded during various forms of experimentally induced respiratory stress. There was considerable variation in the responses of individual scallops but bradycardia generally occurred in response to all forms of respiratory stress, with the rate of fall in heart rate dependent upon the severity of hypoxia. When oxygen tension declined slowly in a closed respirometer there was regulation of both heart rate and oxygen consumption. The critical tension, Pc, for oxygen consumption lay between 70 and 80 mm Hg, and corresponded with a slight regulatory upswing of the heart rate, whereas the Pc for heart rate was much lower at 20–30 mm Hg. Sudden transfer to deoxygenated water for 3 h resulted in very rapid bradycardia and there was a rapid recovery and initial overshoot of the normal rate on return to well-oxygenated sea water. Aerial exposure for 3 h produced more gradual bradycardia followed by gradual recovery on return to sea water. The results of this work are compared in some detail with previous work on other species of bivalve from different geographical areas and habitats, and the mechanisms controlling cardiac and respiratory regulation are discussed. It is concluded that there are few clear-cut general differences between littoral and sublittoral species in their behavioural and physiological adaptations to hypoxia; the main distinguishing feature of littoral-adapted species is their ability to control air-gaping. Changes in heart activity generally indicate variations in metabolic rate, the speed at which the metabolic rate may be altered reflecting the degree of adaptation to the littoral environment.  相似文献

Excretory granules from the kidney of the scallop, Pecten maximus (L.), have been isolated and purified. Their morphology has been determined by electron microscopy and their elemental composition by electron-probe X-ray micro-analysis. The granules, varying in size from 5–15 gmm diameter, are inorganic in nature and contain Ca, Mn, Zn, and P, equivalent to 75% of their dry weight, with Mg, Cu, Fe, Cd, K, S, and Cl also present in much smaller amounts. The granules show large variations in elemental composition but the sum of the metals is always close to equimolarity with the phosphorus content. Electron microscopy of the kidney tissue showed that there is a gradual development of the granules from lysosomal membranous vesicles to highly mineralized membrane-limited vacuoles or residual bodies, which are eventually excreted as such into the urinary tract.  相似文献

The responses of ship-fouling and non-fouling isolates of Enteromorpha compressa (L.) Grev. have been compared in media containing copper at 0.0?9.6 μmol · dm?3. The responses of each isolate were found to vary, according to the conditions of the original habitat. Thus ship-fouling E. compressa was found to be tolerant of copper concentrations up to 9.6 μmol · dm?3 showing a maintenance of all of the physiological processes studied during the present research (cell viability, net photosynthesis, intracellular K+ and dimethylsulphoniopropionate content). Non-fouling plant material showed symptoms of copper toxicity at all levels of copper from 1.8 μmol · dm?3 to 9.6 μmol · dm?3. Copper tolerance in ship-fouling E. compressa appears to be genetically determined, since the progeny from ship-fouling plants are also tolerant to copper concentrations within the range 1.8 to 9.6 μmol · dm?3. The rate of accumulation of copper in ship-fouling thalli is, however, almost identical to that of non-fouling thalli, suggesting that tolerance may be due primarily to internal detoxification, rather than an exclusion mechanism.  相似文献

The development of the retinomotor reaction was examined histologically in the larvae of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus, L.). In plaice retinal pigment migration is present from hatching, but, in turbot, does not occur until just before metamorphosis. In both species rods first develop at metamorphosis. Plaice show cone migration, but this does not occur in turbot. During dark-adaptation retinal pigment contraction started at ≈ 100 lux in all stages of plaice. Before metamorphosis pigment was fully contractedimmediately below 1000 lux, but after metamorphosis full contraction did not occur until the light intensity had fallen to < 1.0 lux. The thresholds for cone migration in plaice showed similar changes, although the actual light intensities were about an order of magnitude lower. In turbot there was always an abrupt transition between light- and dark-adaptation; the thresholds for this fell from ≈ 10 lux at the start of metamorphosis to between 1.0 and 10 lux at the end. The lower threshold light intensities in turbot compared to plaice may indicate that vision is of greater importance in the feeding of the former species.  相似文献

The involvement of the lectin/carbohydrate interaction in the invasion of the turbot intestinal epithelium by Enteromyxum scophthalmi was studied in vitro using explants of turbot intestine and pre-treatment of parasite stages with the plant lectins of Canavalia ensiformis (Con A) and Glycine max (SBA). Both lectins inhibited the attachment and invasion of E. scophthalmi stages to the intestinal epithelium, though the inhibitory effect was higher for SBA than for Con A. Such results point to the involvement of N-acetyl-galactosamine (GalNAc) and galactose (Gal) residues and also of mannose/glucose residues in the E. scophthalmi-intestinal epithelium interaction. The inhibitory effect of both lectins on the parasite adhesion and penetration points to the interest of further studies to confirm the presence of putative lectins recognising GalNAc-Gal and mannose/glucose residues in turbot intestine. The obtained results demonstrated also the adequacy of turbot intestinal explants as an in vitro model to study the interaction with E. scophthalmi.  相似文献

There is a direct, linear relationship between scaphognathie beat frequency and absolute ventilation volume in Carcinus maenas (L). The absolute ventilation volume is directly proportional to the size of the animals. At all scaphognathie frequencies small animals have a greater relative ventilation volume than large animals. The absolute stroke volume (ml/beat) is greater in large animals than in small animals. The majority of the available evidence suggests that, whilst the force of the scaphognathie stroke may be variable, the amplitude of its excursion remains constant at all beat frequencies.  相似文献

A more rapid and powerful response against repeated exposure of same pathogen in vertebrates is usually considered as the reflection of immunological memory, but it is not well understood in invertebrates. In the present study, the temporal expression profiles of Chlamys farreri peptidoglycan recognition protein-S1 (CfPGRP-S1) gene after two challenges of Listonella anguillarum were examined to evaluate priming response in scallops. The up-regulation of CfPGRP-S1 mRNA occurred 3 h earlier, and the expression level was significant higher (P < 0.05), after the second challenge than that after the first challenge. The preliminary results provided new insights into invertebrate immunological memory, and they also would be helpful to develop strategies for disease control.  相似文献

In this preliminary study defense behaviour patterns (fear responses) are described in two closely related, behaviourally different inbred labyrinth fish subspecies and in their F1 generation. The subspecies M. opercularis (characterized briefly by “active escape”) and M. opercularis concolor (characterized by “passive escape”) showed specific differences in the manifestation of certain defense behaviour patterns. In the F1 hybrid generation dominance and overdominance of M. opercularis was found in most defense behaviour patterns. Analysing the frequencies and sequences of movement patterns it could be shown that defensive behaviour is not a random or entirely “plastic” process but that there is sequential linkage between the patterns and they form characteristic clusters. Our results suggest that manifestations of different patterns are under genetic control and presumably, genetic determination of certain patterns is not very complex. Attempts were made to determine whole brain noradrenaline, serotonine and dopamine levels of the two subspecies and a significant difference was found in the noradrenaline content.  相似文献

The digestive efficiency of temperature acclimated mummichogs, Fundulus heteroclitus (L.), was determined using the amphipod Orchestia grillus Bosc as prey. Experiments were conducted on three size groups of mummichogs (<1 g, 1–3 g, > 3 g) at 5, 13, 21, and 29 °C. No difference was found in digestive efficiency by different sizes of mummichogs. There was, however, a statistically significant difference in efficiency over the range of acclimation temperatures, with the efficiencies being temperature independent from 13 to 29 °C and dropping slightly at 5 °C. From 13 to 29 °C, digestive efficiencies were the maximum possible. Temperatures in this range are normal late spring, summer, and early fall habitat temperatures in Maine estuaries. The ability to maintain a maximum efficiency of digestion over this 16°C temperature range allows mummichogs to get the maximum amount of energy from their prey during the time of year when they are utilizing substantial energy for growth (somatic and gonadal, and for activity (foraging and mating). The digestive efficiency at 5 °C was only about 13.5% less than at 21 and 29 °C. This drop is probably of little ecological or energetic significance, so that mummichogs are actually able to absorb food energy across their alimentary tract relatively independent of acclimation temperature over a 24 °C range.  相似文献

Reproduction in species of eusocial insects is monopolized by one or a few individuals, while the remaining colony tasks are performed by the worker caste. This reproductive division of labor is exemplified by honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), in which a single, polyandrous queen is the sole colony member that lays fertilized eggs. Previous work has revealed that the developmental fate of honey bee queens is highly plastic, with queens raised from younger worker larvae exhibiting higher measures in several aspects of reproductive potential compared to queens raised from older worker larvae. Here, we investigated the effects of queen reproductive potential (“quality”) on the growth and winter survival of newly established honey bee colonies. We did so by comparing the growth of colonies headed by “high-quality” queens (i.e., those raised from young worker larvae, which are more queen-like morphologically) to those headed by “low-quality” queens (i.e., those raised from older worker larvae, which are more worker-like morphologically). We confirmed that queens reared from young worker larvae were significantly larger in size than queens reared from old worker larvae. We also found a significant positive effect of queen grafting age on a colony’s production of worker comb, drone comb, and stored food (honey and pollen), although we did not find a statistically significant difference in the production of worker and drone brood, worker population, and colony weight. Our results provide evidence that in honey bees, queen developmental plasticity influences several important measures of colony fitness. Thus, the present study supports the idea that a honey bee colony can be viewed (at least in part) as the expanded phenotype of its queen, and thus selection acting predominantly at the colony level can be congruent with that at the individual level.  相似文献

Vernolate (S-propyl N, N-dipropylthiocarbamate) has been used to select thiocarbamate-tolerant tobacco cell lines. Cross-tolerance to other thiocarbamate herbicides was observed. Tolerance was initially unstable in the absence of continued selection, but shoot regeneration produced plants in which some tolerance was stably expressed. Morphological abnormalities in the regenerated plants are described.  相似文献
