We estimated the grazing impact of the heterotrophic flagellate Collodictyon triciliatum on the harmful, bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in an experimental pond during a Microcystis bloom from summer to winter in 2010. For these experiments, we calculated the grazing rates from the digestion rate of C. triciliatum and its food vacuole contents. During the study period, M. aeruginosa exhibited one bloom event with a maximum density of 1.1 × 105 cells ml?1. The cell density of C. triciliatum fluctuated from below the detection limit to 291 cells ml?1. The number of M. aeruginosa cells ingested by C. triciliatum food vacuoles ranged between 0.4 and 10.8 cells flagellate?1, and the digestion rate of C. triciliatum at 25 °C was 0.73 % cell contents min?1. The grazing rate of C. triciliatum on the M. aeruginosa prey was 0.2–6.9 cells flagellate?1 h?1, and its grazing impact was 0.0–25.3 % standing stock day?1. The functional response of C. triciliatum to the M. aeruginosa prey followed the Michaelis–Menten model of significance (r 2 = 0.873, p < 0.001) in our experimental systems, in which the prey concentration varied from 1.0 × 104 to 2.1 × 106 cells ml?1. The maximum grazing rate was 6.2 prey cells grazer?1 h?1, and the half-saturation constant was 1.2 × 105 cells ml?1. We present evidence that C. triciliatum grazing explained the remarkable decrease in M. aeruginosa cell density in the pond. The present study is the first demonstration of the high potential of protistan grazing on M. aeruginosa to reduce cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

Freshwater tidal estuaries comprise the most upstream reaches of estuaries and are often characterised by the presence of dense bacterial and algal populations which provide a large food source for bacterivorous and algivorous protists. In 1996, the protistan community in the freshwater tidal reaches of the Schelde estuary was monitored to evaluate whether these high food levels are reflected in a similarly high heterotrophic protistan biomass. Protistan distribution patterns were compared to those of metazoan zooplankton to evaluate the possible role of top-down regulation of protists by metazoans. Apart from the algivorous sarcodine Asterocaelum, which reached high densities in summer, heterotrophic protistan biomass was dominated by ciliates and, second in importance, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN). HNAN abundance was low (annual average 2490 cells ml–1) and did not display large seasonal variation. It is hypothesised that HNAN were top-down controlled by oligotrich ciliates throughout the year and by rotifers in summer. Ciliate abundance was generally relatively high (annual average 65 cells ml–1) and peaked in winter (maximum 450 cells ml–1). The decline of ciliate populations in summer was ascribed to grazing by rotifers, which developed dense populations in that season. In winter, ciliate populations were probably regulated `internally' by carnivorous ciliates (haptorids and Suctoria). Our observations suggest that, in this type of productive ecosystems, the microbial food web is mainly top-down controlled rather than regulated by food availability.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans and copepods were studied in Lake Peipsi and Lake Võrtsjärv, both of which are shallow, turbid and large. Our hypothesis was that in a large shallow eutrophic lake, the ciliates could be the most important zooplankton group. The mean metazooplankton biomass was higher in Peipsi than in Võrtsjärv (mean values and SD, 1.8 ± 0.7 and 1.3 ± 0.6 mg WM l?1). In Peipsi, the metazooplankton biomass was dominated by filtrators that feed on large-sized phytoplankton and are characteristic of oligo-mesotrophic waters. In Võrtsjärv, the metazooplankton was dominated by species characteristic of eutrophic waters. The planktonic ciliates in both lakes were dominated by oligotrichs. The biomass of ciliates was much greater in Võrtsjärv (mean 2.3 ± 1.4 mg WM l?1) than in Peipsi (0.1 ± 0.08 mg WM l?1). Ciliates formed about 60% of the total zooplankton biomass in Võrtsjärv but only 6% in Peipsi. Thus, the food chains in the two lakes differ: a grazing food chain in Peipsi and a detrital food-chain in Võrtsjärv. Consequently, top-down control of phytoplankton can be assumed to be much more important in Peipsi than in Võrtsjärv. When the detrital food chain prevails, the planktonic ciliates become the most important zooplankton group in shallow, eutrophic and large lake. Neglecting protozooplankton can result in serious underestimates of total zooplankton biomass since two-thirds of the zooplankton biomass in Võrtsjärv comprises ciliates.  相似文献

1. The seasonal development of crustacean zooplankton, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and bacteria was examined in Grosser Binnensee, a shallow, eutrophic lake in northern Germany. The grazing impact of Daphnia on bacteria and nanoflagellates was estimated from field data on population abundances and from clearance rates obtained in laboratory experiments. 2. The seasonal succession of zooplankton showed distinct peaks of Daphnia magna, cyclopopid copepods, Bosmina longirostris and Daphnia galeata and D. hynlina. The population dynamics of Dapfinia had the strongest impact on all sestonic components. Daphnia maxima coincided with clearwater phases, and were negatively correlated with particulate organic carbon (POC), HNF and phytoplankton. Bacterial abundance was only slightly affected although daphnids were at times more important as bacterial consumers than HNF, as estimated from measured bacterial clearance rates. Other crustaceans (copepods, Bosmina) were probably of minor importance as grazers of bacteria and nanoplankton. 3. HNF abundance varied from 550 ml?1 to more than 30000 ml?1. HNF appeared to be suppressed by daphnids and reached highest densities when copepods dominated the metazooplankton. The variation in HNF abundance was not reflected in the concentration of heterotrophic bacteria, which fluctuated rather irregularly between 5 and 20 ± 106 ml?1. Long filamentous bacteria which were probably resistant to protozoan grazing, however, appeared parallel to the development of HNF. These bacterial cells, although small in number, could comprise more than 30% of the total bacterial biomass.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We studied the effect of the small crustacean zooplankton on heterotrophic micro-organisms and edible phytoplankton in a eutrophic lake during a cyanobacterial bloom.
2. Small (15 L) enclosures were filled with natural or screened (100 μm) lake water and incubated for 5 days in the lake. Screening removed crustacean zooplankton but the initial density of rotifers and phytoplankton remained the same in control and removal treatments. Changes in the abundance and biomass of bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton (APP), heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates were measured daily.
3. The crustacean zooplankton, dominated by the small cladoceran Chydorus sphaericus , did not affect cyanobacteria, the main phytoplankton group during the experiment.
4. The removal of the crustacean zooplankton induced a higher abundance of ciliates and reduced that of the HNF, indicating the importance of ciliates in controlling HNF in this system.  相似文献

The occurrence and importance of photoautotrophic picoplankton (PPP, cells with a diameter <2 μm) was studied along a trophic and salinity gradient in hypersaline lakes of the Transylvanian Basin (Romania). The studied lakes were found to be rich in PPP, with abundances (maximum 7.6 × 106 cells mL?1) higher than in freshwater and marine environments of similar trophic conditions. The contribution of PPP to the total phytoplankton biovolume did not decrease with increasing trophic state as it was generally found in other aquatic environments. Regardless of the trophic conditions, the contribution of PPP could reach 90–100 % in these hypersaline lakes. We hypothesized that the PPP predominance might be the result of the low grazing pressure, since heterotrophic nanoflagellates (the main grazers of PPP) were absent in the studied samples. There were significant differences in community composition among the lakes along the salinity gradient. CyPPP predominated in less saline waters (mainly below 5 %), while EuPPP were present along the entire salinity range (up to 18.7 %), dominating the phytoplankton between 3 and 13 % salinity. Above 13 % salinity, the phytoplankton was composed mainly of Dunaliella species.  相似文献

A study on the bacterioplankton of Conceição Lagoon (27°34′ S–48°27′ W), Southern Brazil, was carried out in July 2005 (austral winter) and January 2006 (austral summer) to characterize the bacterial spatiotemporal distribution and to determine the heterotrophic and photoautotrophic bacterial dominance in hypoxic/oxic stratified waters. Bacterial abundance increased significantly (p?5 (winter) to 3.21?×?106 cells mL?1 (summer), heterotrophic coccus/rod-shaped (HCR) cells from 7.00?×?104 to 3.60?×?106 cells mL?1, and heterotrophic filamentous (HF) bacteria from 2.90?×?103 to 2.74?×?105 cells mL?1. Bacterial biovolumes also increased in summer with mean biovolumes of CCY ranging from 0.38 to 1.37 μm3, HCR cells from 0.31 to 1.12 μm3, and HF from 3.32 to 11.34 μm3. Principal component analysis showed that salinity, temperature, and light were the abiotic factors that better explained the temporal variability of bacterial assemblages. Bacterial heterotrophy dominated in the lagoon, excepted by the southern and part of central sector in January 2006, when autotrophic-dominated microbial community occurred. Spatially, bacterial assemblages were influenced by nutrient gradient, oxygen, and salinity with a positive relationship between biovolumes and nutrients and a negative relationship between abundance of coccus cyanobacteria and nutrients. area revealed a singular temporal pattern with hypoxic bottom waters in winter and oxygen-rich waters appearing in summer related with the availability of light and predominant microbes. Thus, oxygen consumption/production is likely to be regulated by the amount of light reaching the bottom, stimulating the production of oxygen by oxygenic phototrophs.  相似文献

Bacteria associated with plankton are of importance in marine bioinvasions and the implementation of ship’s ballast water treatment technologies. In this study, epibiotic and endobiotic bacteria associated with zooplankton, including barnacle nauplii, veliger larvae, and adults of the copepod Oithona sp., were characterized and quantified. Barnacle nauplius and veliger larva harbored ~4.4 × 10cells ind?1 whereas Oithona sp. had 8.8 × 10cells ind?1. Computation of bacterial contribution based on biovolume indicated that despite being the smallest zooplankton tested, veliger larvae harbored the highest number of bacteria, while barnacle nauplii, the largest of the zooplankton, tested in terms of volume contributed the least. Pulverization of zooplankton led to an increase in bacterial numbers; for example, Vibrio cholerae, which was initially 3.5 × 103, increased to 5.4 × 10CFU g?1; Escherichia coli increased from 5.0 × 102 to 1.3 × 10CFU g?1; and Streptococcus faecalis increased from 2.1 × 102 to 2.5 × 10CFU g?1, respectively. Pulverized zooplankton was aged in the dark to assess the contribution of bacteria from decaying debris. Aging of pulverized zooplankton led to emergence of Chromobacterium violaceum, which is an opportunistic pathogen in animals and humans.  相似文献

Autotrophic picoplankton communities were examined in eleven oligotrophic lakes from a broad geographic region of western Canada, representing a variety of physico-chemical and biological conditions. During our study, several of the lakes were treated with additions of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Picoplankton communities in most lakes were dominated (>70%) by unicellular or colonial coccoid cyanobacteria, provisionally identified by morphological and autofluorescence properties as Synechococcus. Also common in some lakes were red-fluorescing cyanobacteria and Chlorella-like eucaryotes. Autotrophic picoplankters contributed from 36-63% to total chlorophyll, from >2-26% to total phytoplankton carbon, and from 29–53% to total photosynthesis. Average populations ranged from >5-10,000 cells·ml−1 in winter and early spring to 65-75,000 cells · ml−1 in summer and fall. Peak densities in most lakes occurred in August-September and most populations were within the epilimnion or metalimnion/hypolimnion boundary. Subsurface peaks were prevalent only in untreated, strongly stratified lakes. Eucaryotic picoplankters became dominant in acidic (pH < 6.2), humic lakes. Colonial picoplankters were more common in more productive interior lakes in August, and though present, were uncommon in coastal systems. Picoplankton populations exhibited large increases under ice in a Yukon lake, and their abundance and seasonal distribution showed little relation to temperature or to light. Fertilization of lakes resulted in picoplankton population increases (>2x) and the elimination of subsurface peaks. Nutrients were considered to be one of the major factors controlling population abundance in these oligotrophic lakes with average pH < 6.5.  相似文献

The growth and biochemical composition of photoautotrophic and heterotrophic Isochrysis maritima in 50 L of Walne’s medium were compared. Heterotrophic I. maritima fed with 0.02 M glucose had a 4.6-fold higher maximum cell density (38.17 ± 0.23 × 106 cells mL?1) than photoautotrophic cells (8.29 ± 0.70 × 106 cells mL?1). The carbohydrate content was slightly higher in heterotrophic cells at all growth stages (mid-exponential, 40.8%; early stationary, 48.3%; and late stationary, 47.6%), but there was no significant effect on the protein content under either trophic condition. The total saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were higher under heterotrophic conditions than those under photoautotrophic conditions. However, because omega-3 PUFAs are the most essential element in feed nutrition, low results for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (0.28 ± 0.06%) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (3.22 ± 0.26%) in the heterotrophic cells compared to the photoautotrophic cells (EPA: 0.44 ± 0.11%; DHA: 8.58 ± 0.73%) plus a low omega-3/6 PUFAs ratio (heterotrophic: 0.16–0.47; photoautotrophic: 2.60–2.88) and high value of (SFA + MUFA)/PUFA (heterotrophic: 5.50–6.81; photoautotrophic: 2.64–3.60) showed that this species is not suitable for aquaculture feed when cultivated under heterotrophic conditions.  相似文献

Winter phytoplankton communities in the shallow alkaline pans of Hungary are frequently dominated by picoeukaryotes, sometimes in particularly high abundance. In winter 2012, the ice-covered alkaline Zab-szék pan was found to be extraordinarily rich in picoeukaryotic green algae (42–82 × 106 cells ml?1) despite the simultaneous presence of multiple stressors (low temperature and light intensity with high pH and salinity). The maximum photosynthetic rate of the picoeukaryote community was 1.4 μg C μg chlorophyll a ?1 h?1 at 125 μmol m?2 s?1. The assimilation rates compared with the available light intensity measured on the field show that the community was considerably light-limited. Estimated areal primary production was 180 mg C m?2 d?1. On the basis of the 18S rRNA gene analysis (cloning and DGGE), the community was phylogenetically heterogeneous with several previously undescribed chlorophyte lineages, which indicates the ability of picoeukaryotic communities to maintain high genetic diversity under extreme conditions.  相似文献

Survival during early fish larval stages depends largely upon the availability of appropriate prey. Studied were the functional responses from hatching to 6 weeks of age of whitefish (Charal) (Chirostoma riojai) larvae that were offered selected rotifers (Brachionus rotundiformis and B. rubens) and cladocerans (Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia dubia). The experiments were conducted in a 50 ml medium at a salinity of 2 g L?1. Each treatment used four replicates. Rotifers were introduced at densities of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 individuals ml?1 and cladocerans at 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, 4.8 and 6.4 individuals ml?1. Two larvae, previously starved for 2 h, were introduced into each test jar and allowed to feed for 45 min. The difference between the initial and final zooplankton density represented prey consumption. C. riojai larvae showed Type II functional response curves, i.e. they consumed more zooplankton with increasing prey availability; above a certain prey density (8–16 individuals ml?1 in rotifers and 3.2–6.4 individuals ml?1 in cladocerans) the consumption rate tended to stabilize in most trials. Results are discussed in relation to aquaculture.  相似文献

We studied production by three key pelagic energy mobilizer communities, phytoplankton (PP), heterotrophic bacteria (HB), and methanotrophic bacteria (MOB), in five boreal lakes of varying size and concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Production by PP was responsible for most (>55%) of the total pelagic energy mobilization in all five lakes. Production by HB and PP estimated for the whole water column during the ice-free period were positively correlated, but with the exception of the clearest and most eutrophic lake PP apparently could not support the total carbon demand of bacteria. However, the DOC concentration did not explain the variability of heterotrophic bacterial production (HBP) within or between the lakes. Thus, our results provide circumstantial evidence for the “priming effect” whereby labile organic matter from autochthonous production enhances decomposition of allochthonous DOC. However, HBP was only 10–23% of the total pelagic energy mobilization in the lakes, suggesting that only a minor fraction of allochthonous DOC became available for higher trophic levels. High MOB activity was detected in the water columns of the stratified lakes when the molar ratio of CH4:O2 varied between 0.5 and 12. In the small stratified lakes (area < 0.01 km2), MOB production contributed 13–52% of the total pelagic energy mobilization, being greatest during the autumn mixing period. Our results indicate that in small stratified lakes (area < 0.01 km2) bacteria, especially MOB, are potentially quantitatively important supplementary food resources for zooplankton. However, in larger lakes primary producers are the most important (>70%) potential food source for zooplankton.  相似文献

This study tested field and laboratory methods for the collection of cyanobacteria and microcystins emitted from lake water. These methods feature a highly portable, on-lake system for collecting aerosols directly from the lake, as well as a laboratory system for measurement of aerosols from freshly collected water samples under controlled conditions. Membrane air filters (0.45 μm) collected small particles such as picoplankton (0.2–2.0 μm) from aerosolized lake water. Picocyanobacteria were distinguished from other photosynthetic cells with epifluorescence microscopy using excitation filters for chlorophyll a (435 nm) and for phycobilin pigments (572 nm), characteristic of cyanobacteria. Aerosolization of picocyanobacteria ranged from 8872 to 167,297 cells m ?3 in the field and 23,764 to 365,011 cells m ?3 in the laboratory. Microcystin levels from field air filters ranged (below detectable limits) <13–384 pg MC m ?3 of air. The described methods could be used for monitoring aerosolized cyanobacteria for public health purposes.  相似文献

The dominant microalgal species, quantity of heterotrophic bacteria and Vibrio in the intestines and gills of Litopenaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp), positive detection rate of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), and water quality indices were investigated at the final culture stage (88th day in culture season). Correlation of microalgal community, bacteria quantity, and shrimp production were analyzed by statistical analysis methods. Every 10 days, probiotics were used in groups A, B, and C, consisting of Bacillus, photosynthetic bacteria (PSB), and equal parts Bacillus and PSB, respectively. The results showed that production (25597.33?±?928.46 kg ha?1) and survival rate (77.06?±?9.00 %) was the highest in group C, but positive detection rate of WSSV was the lowest. The microalgal community of group C was significantly dominated by Chlorella pyrenoidosa, with an average density and dominance of (289.52?±?142.10)?×?107 cells L?1 and 0.878?±?0.161, respectively. The correlation analysis indicated a significant negative correlation between Cyanophyta dominance and shrimp production (P?<?0.05), while the relationship between production and Vibrio quantity was not significantly correlated (P?>?0.05). Accordingly, microalgal dominant species should be controlled as a key factor in the shrimp culture season; in particular, the dominance of Cyanophyta should be restricted to a low level. Meanwhile, the combined use of Bacillus and PSB probiotics was considered an effective solution to optimize microalgal communities and controlling the cell density of Cyanophyta.  相似文献

Seasonal and depth variations of the abundance, biomass, and bacterivory of protozoa (heterotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates and ciliates) were determined during thermal stratification in an oligomesotrophic lake (Lake Pavin, France). Maximal densities of heterotrophic flagellates (1.9 × 103 cells ml–1) and ciliates (6.1 cells ml–1) were found in the metalimnion. Pigmented flagellates dominated the flagellate biomass in the euphotic zone. Community composition of ciliated protists varied greatly with depth, and both the abundance and biomass of ciliates was dominated by oligotrichs. Heterotrophic flagellates dominated grazing, accounting for 84% of total protistan bacterivory. Maximal grazing impact of heterotrophic flagellates was 18.9 × 106 bacteria 1–1h–1. On average, 62% of nonpigmented flagellates were found to ingest particles. Ciliates and mixotrophic flagellates averaged 13% and 3% of protistan bacterivory, respectively. Attached protozoa (ciliates and flagellates) were found to colonize the diatom Asterionella formosa. Attached bacterivores had higher ingestion rates than free bacterivorous protozoa and may account for 66% of total protozoa bacterivory. Our results indicated that even in low numbers, epibiotic protozoa may have a major grazing impact on free bacteria. Correspondence: C. Amblard.  相似文献

The hydrolytic activity of a recombinant β-glycosidase from Dictyoglomus turgidum that specifically hydrolyzed the xylose at the C-6 position and the glucose in protopanaxatriol (PPT)-type ginsenosides followed the order Rf > Rg1 > Re > R1 > Rh1 > R2. The production of aglycone protopanaxatriol (APPT) from ginsenoside Rf was optimal at pH 6.0, 80 °C, 1 mg ml?1 Rf, and 10.6 U ml?1 enzyme. Under these conditions, D. turgidum β-glycosidase converted ginsenoside R1 to APPT with a molar conversion yield of 75.6 % and a productivity of 15 mg l?1 h?1 after 24 h by the transformation pathway of R1 → R2 → Rh1 → APPT, whereas the complete conversion of ginsenosides Rf and Rg1 to APPT was achieved with a productivity of 1,515 mg l?1 h?1 after 6.6 h by the pathways of Rf → Rh1 → APPT and Rg1 → Rh1 → APPT, respectively. In addition, D. turgidum β-glycosidase produced 0.54 mg ml?1 APPT from 2.29 mg ml?1 PPT-type ginsenosides of Panax ginseng root extract after 24 h, with a molar conversion yield of 43.2 % and a productivity of 23 mg l?1 h?1, and 0.62 mg ml?1 APPT from 1.35 mg ml?1 PPT-type ginsenosides of Panax notoginseng root extract after 20 h, with a molar conversion yield of 81.2 % and a productivity of 31 mg l?1 h?1. This is the first report on the APPT production from ginseng root extract. Moreover, the concentrations, yields, and productivities of APPT achieved in the present study are the highest reported to date.  相似文献

Phytoplankton often develop various defense mechanisms in response to zooplankton grazing, such as spines and colonies. While it is now known that increased spine length and cells in a colony of members of the genus Scenedesmus, when zooplankton grazing is intense, helps in reducing zooplankton filtering rates, the effect of these defense mechanisms at the population level has been observed in few studies. Here we present data on the growth rates of four zooplankton species, Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia pulex at two food levels using two species of colony-forming Scenedesmus spp.: S. acutus (cell length = 18.2 ± 0.4 µm; width = 4.2 ± 0.1 µm; average colony length = 90 µm; width: 21 µm) and S. quadricauda (cell length: 21 ± 0.5 width 7.5 ± 0.3 µm; average colony length: 84 µm; width: 30 µm). Whereas S. acutus had no spines, S. quadricauda had spines of 6–10 µm. Population growth experiments of the test rotifers and cladocerans were conducted in 100 ml containers with 50 ml of the medium with test algae. Algae concentrations used were: 13 and 52 mg dw l–1 of each of the two algal species offered in colonial forms. We used an initial inoculation zooplankter density of 1 ind. ml–1 for either of the rotifer species and 0.2 ind. ml–1 for either of the cladoceran species. In all, we had 64 test containers (4 test species of zooplankton × 2 test species of algae × 2 algal densities × 4 replicates). We found a significant effect of algal size on the growth rates of all the four tested species of zooplankton. The population growth rates of zooplankton ranged from ?0.58 to 0.66 and were significantly higher on diet of S. acutus than of S. quadricauda. Thus, our study confirms that the larger colony size and the formation of spines in S. quadricauda were effective defenses against grazing by both rotifers and smaller sized cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia but that larger-bodied Daphnia pulex could exploit both the algal populations equally.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that submerged macrophytes provide a refuge for zooplankton against fish predation, whereas the role of emergent and floating-leaved species, which are often dominant in eutrophic turbid lakes, is far less investigated. Zooplankton density in open water and amongst emergent and floating-leaved vegetation was monitored in a small, eutrophic lake (Frederiksborg Slotssø) in Denmark during July–October 2006. Emergent and floating-leaved macrophytes harboured significantly higher densities of pelagic as well as plant-associated zooplankton species, compared to the open water, even during periods where the predation pressure was presumably high (during the recruitment of 0+ fish fry). Zooplankton abundance in open water and among vegetation exhibited low values in July and peaked in August. Bosmina and Ceriodaphnia dominated the zooplankton community in the littoral vegetated areas (up to 4,400 ind l?1 among Phragmites australis and 11,000 ind l?1 between Polygonum amphibium stands), whereas the dominant species in the pelagic were Daphnia (up to 67 ind l?1) and Cyclops (41 ind l?1). The zooplankton density pattern observed was probably a consequence of concomitant modifications in the predation pressure, refuge availability and concentration of cyanobacteria in the lake. It is suggested that emergent and floating-leaved macrophytes may play an important role in enhancing water clarity due to increased grazing pressure by zooplankton migrating into the plant stands. As a consequence, especially in turbid lakes, the ecological role of these functional types of vegetation, and not merely that of submerged macrophyte species, should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a freshwater filter feeding bivalve (Corbicula leana Prime) and large zooplankton (>200 μm, mostly cladocerans and copepods) on the phytoplankton communities in two lakes with contrasting trophic conditions. A controlled experiment was conducted with four treatments (control, zooplankton addition, mussel addition, and both zooplankton and mussel addition), and each established in duplicate 10-l chambers. In both lakes there were significant effects of mussel grazing on phytoplankton density and biomass. The effects were greater in mesotrophic Lake Soyang than in hypertrophic Lake Ilgam. Effects of zooplankton grazing did not differ between these lakes, and zooplankton effects on phytoplankton were much less than the effects of mussels. Although mussels exerted a varying effect on phytoplankton according to their size, mussels reduced densities of almost all phytoplankton taxa. Total mean filtering rate (FR) of mussels in Lake Soyang was significantly greater than that in Lake Ilgam (p=0.002, n=5). Carbon fluxes from phytoplankton to mussels (977–2,379 μgC l?1d?1) and to zooplankton (76–264 μgC l?1 d?1) were always greater in Lake Ilgam due to the greater phytoplankton biomass (p<0.01, n=6). Based on the C-flux to biomass ratios, the mussels consumed 170–754% (avg. 412%) of phytoplankton standing stock in Lake Soyang, and 38–164% (avg. 106%) in Lake Ilgam per day. The C-flux to biomass ratio for mussels within each lake was much greater than for large zooplankton. Mussels reduced total phosphorus concentration by 5–34%, while increasing phosphate by 30–55% relative to the control. Total nitrogen also was reduced (by 9–25%), but there was no noticeable change in nitrate among treatments. The high consumption rate of phytoplankton by Corbicula leana even in a very eutrophic lake suggests that this mussel could affect planktonic and benthic food web structure and function by preferential feeding on small seston and by nutrient recycling. Control of mussel biomass therefore might be an effective tool for management of water quality in shallow eutrophic lakes and reservoirs in Korea.  相似文献
