Results of a 3-year survey (1978–1980) and review of historic trends have shown a major decline in the number of species and the distribution of submersed aquatic macrophytes in the tidal Potomac River since the early 1900's. The freshwater tidal river is essentially devoid of plants and only very sparse populations remain in the mesohaline section of the estuary. Present plant populations are largely confined to the transition-zone region where salinity instability at the fresh-to-brackish water interface is believed to reduce biotic stress on submersed vegetation. Many factors may be implicated in the loss of vegetation over major regions of the tidal Potomac River; however, long-term conditions of excessive nutrients appear to be primarily responsible for the present distribution.  相似文献

Blooms of cyanobacteria have appeared on the Potomac River near Washington, DC in years of drought and low river volume. The location of the bloom may be related to tidal activity. In 1983, the bloom of Microcystis aeruginosa used ammonia as its nitrogen source and contained low levels of toxic peptides. Cells collected from this bloom proved to be homogeneous and were an excellent source material for the isolation of proteins involved in photosynthesis.  相似文献

Studies on the ecology of the proboscis monkey were conducted in seven areas of Sarawak during 1980–1981. Groups were found in a variety of riparian and coastal habitats but where high forests occurred they appeared to be preferred over other adjacent types. Undisturbed tidal forests were widely used but were preferred only where high forest was lacking or limited in extent. Clear-felled tidal forests and areas around human settlements were completely avoided, although some use was made of selectively felled tidal forests, remnant tidal forests adjacent to agricultural land, and selectively logged high forest. Monkeys slept primarily and perhaps exclusively along river edges where these were available, moving inland up to 750m during the day and returning to the riverside in late afternoon. Groups often split up into distinct subunits during daily movements. Feeding occurred throughout the day and in all habitats occupied. Proboscis monkeys were observed feeding on at least 90 plant species, including leaves or shoots of 75 species, fruits of 15 species, seeds of 10 species, and flowers of 4 species. Certain tidal forest species (Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora spp.) appeared to be the single most important food plants, although where high forests were available more feeding time was spent in these types than in tidal forests or other habitats.  相似文献

The flux of dissolved reactive phosphate from Potomac riverine and estuarine sediments is controlled by processes occurring at the water-sediment interface and within surficial sediment.In situ benthic fluxes (0.1 to 2.0 mmoles m−2 day−1) are generally five to ten times higher than calculated diffusive fluxes (0.020 to 0.30 mmoles m−2 day−1). The discrepancy between the two flux estimates is greatest in the transition zone (river mile 50 to 70) and is attributd to macrofaunal irrigation. Bothin situ and diffusive fluxes of dissolved reactive phosphate from Potomac tidal river sediments are low while those from anoxic lower estuarine sediments are high. The net accumulation rate of phosphorus in benthic sediment exhibits an inverse pattern. Thus a large fraction of phosphorus is retained by Potomac tidal river sediments, which contain a surficial oxidized layer and oligochaete worms tolerant of low oxygen conditions, and a large fraction of phosphorus is released from anoxic lower estuary sediments. Tidal river sediment pore waters are in equilibrium with amorphous Fe (OH)3 while lower estuary pore waters are significantly undersaturated with respect to this phase. Benthic regeneration of dissolved reactive phosphorus is sufficient to supply all the phosphorus requirements for net primary production in the lower tidal river and transition-zone waters of the Potomac River Estuary. Benthic regeneration supplies approximately 25% as much phosphorus as inputs from sewage treatment plants and 10% of all phosphorus inputs to the tidal Potomac River. When all available point source phosphorus data are put into a steady-state conservation of mass model and reasonable coefficients for uptake of dissolved phosphorus, remineralization of particulate phosphorus, and sedimentation of particulate phosphorus are used in the model, a reasonably accurate simulation of dissolved and particulate phosphorus in the water column is obtained for the summer of 1980.  相似文献

Sedimentation resulting from storms may have been one of the reasons for the elimination of submersed aquatic vegetation from the tidal Potomac River in the late 1930's. Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the effects of different depths of overlying sediment and composition of sediment on the survival of Vallisneria americana Michx (wildcelery) grown from tubers. Survival of plants grown from tubers decreased significantly with increasing sediment depth. Survival of tubers declined from 90% or more when buried in 10 cm to no survival in greater than 25 cm of sediment. Survival with depth in sand was significantly lower than in silty clay.Field investigation determined that the majority of tubers in Vallisneria beds are distributed between 10 and 20 cm in depth in silty clay and between 5 and 15 cm in depth in sand. Based on the field distribution of tubers and on the percent survival of plants growing from tubers at each depth in the laboratory experiment, we suggest that the deposition of 10 cm or more of sediment by severe storms such as occurred in the 1930s could contribute to the loss of vegetation in the tidal Potomac River.  相似文献

The dispersal of seeds through hydrochory can be an important driver of community dynamics and play an integral role in the colonization of restored wetlands. We assessed sources of seeds on the shoreline and in adjacent waters of the Potomac River to Dyke Marsh in Virginia. Drift-line samples were taken at 40 random points four times during 2005–2006, and water surface net trawling took place on the Potomac River from 2003–2005 using six, 200-m transects around the perimeter of the marsh. Seed supply through hydrochory and species richness was low at Dyke Marsh when compared to other regional tidal freshwater marshes. We discovered distinct temporal patterns, where high species richness and seed density were found in the fall for the water trawl samples but in the spring for the drift-line samples. High fall dispersal in the water trawls may exist owing to peak plant senescence and seed release, while high seed germination in the spring along shorelines may arise due to sufficient cold stratification of marsh seeds.  相似文献

Northern snakehead (Channa argus) were first found in the Potomac River in 2004. In 2007, we documented feeding and reproductive behavior to better understand how this species is performing in this novel environment. From April to October, we used electrofishing surveys to collect data on growth, condition, and gonad weight of adult fish. Growth rates of young were measured on a daily basis for several weeks. Mean length-at-age for Potomac River northern snakehead was lower than for fish from China, Russia, and Uzbekistan. Fish condition was above average during spring and fall, but below average in summer. Below-average condition corresponded to periods of high spawning activity. Gonadosomatic index indicated that females began spawning at the end of April and continued through August. Peak spawning occurred at the beginning of June when average temperatures reached 26°C. Larval fish growth rate, after the transition to exogenous feeding, was 2.3 (SD ± 0.7) mm (total length, TL) per day. Although Potomac River northern snakehead exhibited lower overall growth rates when compared to other populations, these fish demonstrated plasticity in timing of reproduction and rapid larval growth rates. Such life history characteristics likely contribute to the success of northern snakehead in its new environment and limit managers’ options for significant control of its invasion.  相似文献

Harvesting of orchids for medicine and salep production is a traditional practice, and increasing market demand is spurring illegal harvest. Ethno‐ecological studies in combination with the effect of anthropogenic disturbance are lacking for orchids. We compared population density and structure, and tuber biomass of Dactylorhiza hatagirea (D. Don) Soó for three years in two sites: Manang, where harvesting of medicinal plants was locally regulated (protected), and Darchula, where harvesting was locally unregulated (unprotected). Six populations were studied along an elevation gradient by establishing 144 temporary plots (3 × 3 m2) from 3,400 to 4,600 m elevations. Mean density of D. hatagirea was significantly higher in the locally protected (1.31 ± 0.17 plants/m2) than in the unprotected (0.72 ± 0.06 plants/m2) site. The protected site showed stable population density with high reproductive fitness and tuber biomass over the three‐year period. A significant negative effect (p < .1) of relative radiation index (RRI) on the density of the adult vegetative stage and a positive effect of herb cover on juvenile and adult vegetative stages were found using mixed zero‐inflated Poisson (mixed ZIP) models. The densities of different life stages were highly sensitive to harvesting and livestock grazing. Significant interactions between site and harvesting and grazing indicated particularly strong negative effects of these disturbances on densities of juvenile and adult reproductive stages in the unprotected site. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with informants (n = 186) in the villages and at the ecological survey sites. Our interview results showed that at the protected site people are aware of the conservation status and maintain sustainable populations, whereas the opposite was the case at the unprotected site where the populations are threatened. Sustainability of D. hatagirea populations, therefore, largely depends on controlling illegal and premature harvesting and unregulated livestock grazing, thus indicating the need for permanent monitoring of the species.  相似文献

Experiments conducted over four years (1980–1983) with parsnip cv. Avonre-sister examined the effects of plant density, harvest date and method on seed yield and the components of yield. In 1980, using the root-to-seed method, the yield of seed increased by 50% for an increase in plant density from 5.6 to 35 plants m-2; the maximum yield at the optimum harvest date was 3015 kg h-1. In the other three years, using the seed-to-seed method, seed yield increased to a maximum with an increase in plant density from c. 1 to 10 plants m-2 but at higher densities yields were lower. At c. 10 plants m-2, seed yields were 1567, 4029 and 1040 kg ha-1, in 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively, when harvested at the optimum time. An increase in plant density increased the number of non-seeding plants in the population, reduced the number of umbels per plant and reduced the number of seeds per umbel. Mean seed weight was, in general, unaffected by plant density and so effects of density on yield reflected changes in seed numbers. Increasing the plant density increased the proportion of primary-umbel seed. Maximum yields of seed were obtained from crops harvested at a seed-moisture content of 50 to 70%, which occurred 46 ± 2·4 days after flowering. Delay in harvesting after this date led to a loss of yield of 33, 35, 139 and 32 kg ha-1wk-1 in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively. Seasonal abundance as total biomass and specific densities ofthe main herbivorous zooplankton (>60 µm) in hypertrophicHartbeespoort Dam from 1981 to 1983 are described. After springzooplankton biomass maxima each year there followed a mid-summerdecline in the Daphnia population and a shift to a smaller bodiedcladoceran community dominated by Ceriodaphnia concomitant witha change from largely edible phytoplankton species to abundantcolonial Microcystis. In situ community grazing rates were measuredthroughout 1983 using a 14C-labelled unicellular alga. Integratedcommunity grazing rates measured in the aerobic water columnwere highest in December (260.2%/day) when Daphnia was abundantand the edible component of the phytoplankton was diminishing.Lowest integrated community grazing rates occurred in January–February(19.8–35.3%/day) and July (28.3%/day) when the phytoplanktonwas composed almost entirely of Microcysris, and Ceriodaphniadominated the zooplankton community whilst food availabilitywas low. Feeding in Ceriodaphnia was not hindered by abundantlarge Microcysris colonies; total biomass specific grazing ratewas high when Ceriodaphnia dominated and low when Daphnia dominatedthe zoo-plankton community. Results indicate that in hypertrophicconditions it is unlikely that large filter-feeders such asDaphnia are able to retard or limit the development of Cyanophyceaeblooms by high grazing pressure.  相似文献

1981年至1983年每年两次不定期地自珠江广州河段采集河蚬(Corbicula fluminea)作种群分析,发现河蚬在此河段的分布呈不连续状态。用Morisita指数公式计算结果,其分布在理论上属负二项分布类型。河蚬最大的种群密度达7,500个/米~2,但左岸的平均密度显著地低于右岸(t=2.6779;p<0.01)。春季或夏初种群中以壳长11.0毫米者为主,其后则以15.0毫米者居优势。河蚬的壳长(L)与壳高(H)的关系可用回归方程表示:H=0.8802L-0.6119。为了更多地综合壳长(L),壳高(H)和壳宽(W)等参数,试用主成分分析法,取得第一主成分的表达式为Y=0.652L 0.656H 0.361。  相似文献

Composition density and filtering rates of crustacean zooplankton were studied in the open water and among the macrophytes of the oligo-mesotrophic part of Lake Balaton from 1981 to 1983. From the individual filtering rates of the different populations and the densities community grazing rates were derived.Copepoda made up 79–90% of crustacean plankton community in the open lake and 95–97% of it in littoral zone. Among them the nauplii dominated. At the end of summer 1982, when Anabaenopsis was in bloom, the filter-feeding species (Eudiaptomus, Daphnia) practically disappeared, being replaced by cyclopoids. Daphnia had the highest filtering rates followed by those of Eudiaptomus and Diaphanosoma. Among copepods, the filtering rates in decreasing order were: ovigerous > all adults > copepodites > nauplii. > . The filtering rates of the different species varied both seasonally as well as from year to year. In 1983, when the concentration of organic seston decreased, filtering rate increased compared with those in the earlier years. During the water bloom in 1982, the rates decreased by 70% on the average.The community grazing rate was very low (3% per day) in the open lake and among macrophytes, both in 1981 and 1982; also the share of crustacean zooplankton in grazing was very low. In 1983, together with the improving of water quality, the community grazing rate increased 4-fold. In 1981 and 1983 the rates were influenced by water temperature but in 1982 by seston concentration.  相似文献

The study described changes in floristic and vegetation structure in relation to livestock grazing intensity in a conservation area in the Succulent Karoo, South Africa. Grazing by goats and sheep is allowed in the Richtersveld National Park (a contractual National Park. which is also an area of high floristic richness and endemism. We used goat faecal pellet density, degree of trampling and percentage bare-ground at distances from the stock posts as surrogates for a gradient in grazing pressure. A stock post is the place where farmers keep, in most cases in an enclosure called a ‘kraal’, their animals at night and to which they return every evening after the day’s herding. Twenty-seven stock posts were located in the Richtersveld National Park; nine stock posts on flats, foot– slopes and mountain each. We measured plant species richness and diversity, and mean percentage cover of the various plant growth forms (including the number of species falling into each growth form category. in each of the five 10 m . 10 m plots (each 200 m apart. demarcated along a transect of one kilometre length from the centre of each stock post. The results showed that distance from the stock post does reflect grazing intensity use because densities in faecal pellets rapidly declined with increasing distances away from the stock post for all habitats studied. Faecal density was positively correlated with stocking density. Plant species richness and diversity was at a minimum near stock posts. Plants able to endure the effects of heavy grazing occurred near stock posts where declines in palatable plant species, assumingly sensitive to heavy grazing and trampling, were recorded. Grazing increased vegetation patchiness up to 800 m from the stock post for all the habitats. The degree to which this change in species composition occurred did not depend on stocking densities, suggesting that both grazing and landscape variability were responsible for vegetation changes in rangelands of that area of the Succulent Karoo biome.  相似文献

Sediment traps were deployed in the Drake Passage, Bransfield Strait and west of South Orkney Islands (Powell Basin) during December 1980/ January 1981, December 1983, and between March and December 1983, respectively.Most of the trapped material is biogenic opal except in the lower half of the water column in Bransfield Strait where large amounts of resuspended aluminosilicates and quartz grains were present. Frustules and skeletons of siliceous microorganisms (diatoms, silicoflagellates, radiolarians, chrysophycean cysts), fragments and moults of crustaceans and tests of foraminifera were found. Quantitatively diatoms are the dominant constituent of the trapped biogenic material.Alteration of diatom assemblages in the water column is due to mechanical breakdown by grazing zooplankton. It mainly affects large frustules (e.g. Corethron criophilum Castracane) in the uppermost part of the water column. Dissolution of frustules occurs mostly at the sediment/water interface and leads to the enrichment of strongly silicified valves [e.g. Nitzschia kerguelensis (O'Meara) Hasle, Thalassiosira antarctica Comber (resting spores)].At the Bransfield Strait site a large part of biogenic opal was incorporated into fecal pellets of krill and copepods. The bulk of pellet content consists of fragmented diatom frustules (1–10 μm in size). Most intact valves found in the sediments have settled through the water column by means other than fecal pellet transport: e.g. settling as solitary particles or incorporated into or attached to “Marine Snow” or “Large Amorphous Aggregates”.  相似文献

Synopsis Threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, are thought to have been introduced into Hasse Lake, Alberta, where they were discovered in 1980. The population has grown in numbers since 1980 and by 1981 was more abundant than the native brook stickleback, Culaea inconstans. This population is the first to be found in the interior plains of North America, and it occurs at a higher elevation than any other Canadian population. The source of this introduced population is unknown. Significant differences among four years were found in several meristic and morphometric characters but no significant trends during 1980–1983 were found. Species composition, relative abundance, distribution and physical habitat associations of submerged aquatic macrophytes in the main channel border (MCB) habitat of Pool 5A, Upper Mississippi River (UMR) were investigated during the summers of 1980 and 1983. The submerged aquatic macrophytes in Pool .5A MCB were a small and stable component of the river ecosystem. Submerged plants occurred primarily in small, monospecific clumps. Clumps in close proximity to each other formed plant patches. Plant patches were stable in location and number between 1980 and 1983; 82.5% of the patches first observed in 1980 were present in 1983. Submerged macrophytes covered about 10–12 ha of the 201 ha MCB in Pool 5A. Submerged plants were most common in the lower two-thirds of the pool. Ten species of aquatic macrophytes occurred on rock channel-training structures and eleven occurred on non-rock substrates in the MCB. The most common submerged plants, in order of abundance, were Vallisneria americana Michx., Heteranthra dubia Jacq., Potamogeton pectinatus L., Ceratophyllum demersum L. and Potamogeton americanus C. & S.  相似文献

This work consisted of analysing the impact of protection on the Widou Thiengoly's grasslands structure. Data were collected from three selected sites by the quadrat point methodology, consisting of reading the herbaceous on a 10 m line. These sites were the 2013 defended plot (site A), the 2009 semi‐protected plot (site B) and the unprotected grazing areas or off plot (site C). The results revealed a floristic composition of 45 species, belonging to 34 genera and 17 botanical families. The number of species identified was 28 in site A, 31 in site B and 29 in site C. Despite a certain similarity noted in the number of species, the herbaceous vegetation was more balanced in 2013 plot than in 2009 plot and in off plot where it tended to be homogeneous. The herbaceous cover in October 2015 was 99.8% in the 2013 plot; 98.8% in the 2009 plot; and 96.8% in the unprotected sites. The vertical stratification of herbaceous cover showed a better development at the intermediate strata (between 20 cm and 50 cm) in all the sites except in off plot where small grasses dominated. In this study, protection improved the specific balance, while semi‐protection had a positive effect on the specific richness and growth of the grasses.  相似文献

Plants of low palatability often serve as biotic refuges from grazing to palatable plants. Evidence for this facilitation comes from cases where the interacting species have different life form, which may minimize competition. Protected plants act as remnant seed sources that may maintain the palatable populations locally viable through mass effects. Here, we assess (1) the spatial association between a highly palatable Patagonian grass (Bromus pictus) and less preferred tussock grasses, (2) the role played by seed sources in maintaining the population in the face of heavy grazing by sheep, and (3) the facilitative and competitive components of the interaction. We quantified B. pictus density and its distance to nearest tussocks inside and outside a grazing exclosure. We also considered different distances from the exclosure, both leeward and windward, because strong westerly winds may be critical for dispersal. Additionally, we quantified several attributes of protected and unprotected B. pictus plants with and without grazing. Density of B. pictus was about 20 times greater inside the exclosure than outside. However, this difference was less pronounced in the leeward vicinity of the exclosure than in the windward one, which suggests a mass effect. B. pictus was significantly associated to less palatable tussocks, and the association became stronger under grazing and as distance from the exclosure edge increased. Protection under grazing was associated with a significant increase in plant biomass, height, tiller number, and panicle number, whereas protection in the absence of grazing, which could evidence competition, resulted in reductions of tiller number and panicle number, and an increase of height. These results suggest that in areas under grazing pressure on palatable grasses, other less palatable grasses may provide a protection from grazing that outweighs competitive effects. Such protection may generate small-scale mass effects that maintain the population at relatively high density.  相似文献

Early mortality in cohortsof the coral Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) was monitored under experimental conditions on a reef in order to evaluate effects of sedimentation, grazing, predation and competition. Corals that settled in dishes in the laboratory were placed on the reef flat about 3 days after metamorphosis. Six different conditions were tested in each series of experiments: orientation of dishes (upward, vertical and downward) by with and without protection against potential grazers by covering the dish with a net. Survival of juvenile corals on both protected and unprotected dishes facing upward was lower than in the vertical or downward direction. Under the vertical facing and protected conditions, algal growth was more intensive and algae trapped sediment; mortality of juvenile corals by algae and sedimentation increased gradually. In the uprotected and vertical conditions, algal growth on the surface was removed constantly by grazing invertebrates and fishes and the juvenile corals were removed or killed as well. On the downward facing dishes, survivorship of juveniles was relatively high in both protected and unprotected conditions. This habitat attracted many sessile animals that killed some juveniles by competition. Thus, juvenile corals survived better in experimentally manipulated microhabitats not affected by direct sedimentation, not exposed to direct grazing activity, and not occupied by rapidly growing filamentous algae.  相似文献

通过野外样地调查和室内分析,从牧草的适口性和营养成分两方面,研究了放牧对五台山高山、亚高山草甸牧草品质的影响。结果表明:放牧干扰草甸中适口性为喜食及以上的优质牧草种类为20种,喜食牧草在群落中的相对盖度最大,为45.40%;与之相比,极度退化草甸中优质牧草种类为13种,乐食牧草的相对盖度最大,为62.24%;喜食以上优质牧草的相对盖度最大值,出现在轻度退化草甸中,达到65.95%。同一适口性等级牧草,在不同退化等级草甸中,种类发生变化。从放牧干扰草甸到极度退化草甸,牧草中的粗蛋白和灰分含量呈增加趋势,而中性洗涤纤维和酸性洗涤纤维含量呈下降趋势。放牧压力下,五台山高山、亚高山草甸的牧草品质并未下降,但放牧造成的草甸生产力降低,制约了资源的可持续利用和保护。  相似文献
