Data presented in this paper are derived from the births and subsequent histories of red howler infants born in two habitats. Overall the sex ratio of infants at birth was about 1:1. Infant survivorship (at 1 yr) was about 80%, and 44% of infant mortality was attributed to infanticide by males. Survivorship curves indicated a dramatic sex difference, with far fewer females than males known to be alive at age 7 yr. However, this sex difference may be inflated because emigrant males are more easily identified than emigrant females, and females may be dispersing beyond the boundaries of the study area at a higher rate. Annual birthrate varied somewhat from year to year and was positively related to rainfall. Annual birthrate tended to be higher in the habitat with lower density and higher growth rate. Consistent with the trends, in annual birthrate, variation in interbirth interval length (TBR after births of surviving infants was related primarily to habitat differences and annual variation in rainfall. Season of birth and maternal age class had no effect on IBI. Infant sex had mostly nonsignificant effects on IBI. A small sample indicated that IBI's were significantly longer after the births of females who eventually became natal breeders than after the births of females who eventually emigrated. This difference might reflect differential parental (maternal) investment of some sort.  相似文献

We describe the reproductive parameters of tufted capuchins (Cebus apella nigritus) in the Iguazú National Park, NE Argentina. We obtained data on six different groups (33 individually recognized adult females) studied for periods of 2–9 years. Estimated birthrate is 0.59 infants per female per year in unprovisioned groups. A group that was provisioned for 6 years during the winter period of low fruit availability (May–August), showed a similar birth rate of 0.61, but a lower infant mortality rate than unprovisioned groups. The birthrate estimated for this population is higher than the one reported for white-faced and wedge-capped capuchins. The mean interbirth interval is 19.35 months, but a female can have infants in successive years, even when her previous infant has survived. The modal age at first delivery is 7 years, which is similar to the one observed in wedge-capped capuchins. When young adult females come into estrous they avoid copulating with the alpha male that sired them, thus providing evidence for a behavioral mechanism of inbreeding avoidance. Births are very seasonal at Iguazú, occurring during the spring and summer months (October–February) when food availability is at its peak. Tufted capuchins at Iguazú are more seasonal breeders than other capuchin populations, probably as a result of their more seasonal environment. The secondary sex ratio does not deviate significantly from 1:1, despite the known ability of capuchins to adjust secondary sex ratio to local conditions.  相似文献

A simulation model has been developed for predicting the distribution of trinucleotide repeat expansion diseases in human populations. The interface of the software used to run this model presents the options for simulating natural reproduction of a population, with the population demographic parameters taken into account, and for simulating the appearance of a dynamic mutation in populations, transmission of the mutant gene from parents to offspring, and the effect of the phenotypic expression of the disease (the patients’ life expectancy and birthrate) on the transmission of the mutant allele in the patients’ families and its accumulation in the population.  相似文献

Summary Colony defense has been reported in a limited number of species of aphids. This paper examines which life-historical traits have promoted the evolution of colony defense using two kinds of deterministic simulation models. These models postulate that first-instar larvae can counterattack predators and that the duration of this instar stage is a variable, subject to selection. Prolonging the first-instar span increases the proportion of defenders in the colony, while it results in a delay in reproduction. By calculating the optimal first-instar span, the optimal defensive effort of a colony under various ecological conditions could be estimated. Simulations based on the general model, which regards the number of adults maturing in a period as performance, predicted that a lower birthrate leads to a longer first-instar span (larger investment in defense). This condition also allowed the evolution of dimorphism in the first-instar span, which may ultimately result in the appearance of soldiers. Where birthrate declines with time, the first-instar span was predicted to be prolonged in later stages. Colony duration had little influence on the optimal first-instar span if the season is long enough to repeat generations. The galling-aphid model that assumes a fixed number of generations predicted that a longer duration of colonies leads to a longer first-instar span, but that birthrate has little influence on the optimal first-instar span. A tendency in defense reported in pemphigid aphids was consistent with the prediction from the galling-aphid model.  相似文献

The sudden appearance of effective contraception in certain populations in the last decade has provided data useful for studying the genetic effect of contraception on our own generation and on future generations of the human race. Since 1948, Japan has halved its birthrate by therapeutic abortion, reducing the mean maternal age. Since 1965, Chile's contraception program has reduced the birthrate from 35 to 25 per 1000, increased the proportion of primiparas from 25% to 35%, increased the frequency of mothers aged less than 20 years from 13% to 20%, decreased the mean maternal age from 27.6 to 25.6 years and increased its variance, reduced infant mortality from 100 to 80 per 1000 live births, and reduced the number of stillbirths from 2.5% to 1.9%. Two changes predicted by genetic theory, decreases in mongolism and anencephaly, did not occur. Long-term genetic effects are poorly understood, except for studies on Japanese populations exposed to ionizing radiation. The only eugenic strategy we can apply for future generations is to conserve variation in the human genotype.  相似文献

We observed three cases of troop extinction and two cases of female fusion in the wild population of Japanese macaques on Yakushima Island, Japan. Troops P and T decreased in size relatively slowly over a few years until each troop consisted of only three monkeys. Several months later, the remaining adult female of P merged with the adjacent troop S, followed by the remaining female of T. S subsequently also decreased in size and disappeared about 2 years later. In the early stage of troop decline, the mortality rate of adult females was as low as in a growing troop, but the birthrate was quite low. In the late stage of troop decline, the mortality rate increased and the birthrate remained low. An important factor leading to troop extinction may be an increase in population density and the resulting increase in intergroup competition. During the period when P and T declined and ceased to exist, the range of the adopted troop shifted to cover their previous ranges. In the fused troop, there was no severe aggression directed towards the immigrant females or harassment from residents of the adopted troop and there was affiliative social interaction between the immigrant females and resident members. These results agree with previous reports on female fusion: it occurs when the shrinking group consists of one or no adult member, and the immigrant females are not at a severe disadvantage in their adoptive group. A possible benefit for immigrant females is to avoid disadvantage of one-adult group in conflict with conspecifics. A possible cost for immigrant females is transfer to the other troop or to unfamiliar area or both. The cost to transfer to another group may not be high because the members of the adoptive troop are relatively tolerant to immigrants. The cost to transfer to unfamiliar range may be minimized by immigration to the troop whose range shifted to the immigrants' former range.  相似文献

  • 1 A dataset generated from previous experiments on greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) response to irrigation and plant density in grain sorghum was reanalyzed using a recently‐developed mechanistic ecological model for describing aphid population density curves. The model was used to estimate seven response variables: observed peak aphid abundance, predicted peak aphid abundance, time of peak abundance, per capita birthrate, death rate coefficient, final cumulative density and duration of substantial aphid infestation across three irrigation regimes and five plant densities.
  • 2 Using regression, the observed peak aphid abundance, predicted peak aphid abundance, per capita birthrate and final cumulative abundance were shown to decrease significantly, whereas the death rate coefficient and duration of the infestation were shown to increase significantly for each 100 000 plant/ha increase.
  • 3 Although significant results were found for a number of variables generated from the specific data set used in the analyses, of perhaps greater importance is the potential use of these equations in future predictions of aphid population dynamics. An example of projecting population curves based on estimated peak and cumulative counts and an example of projecting population curves based on estimated birth and death rate coefficients are provided.

The need for community-wide planning of maternity and newborn services is illustrated by a survey of services in Alameda County, California. The decline in birthrate, coupled with the persistence of a number of low volume obstetrical and newborn units, is reflected in generally underutilized and unevenly distributed services. Primary, intermediate and tertiary levels of care are represented, but not always in a logical relationship to community needs. Postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology and in pediatrics continues to produce increasing numbers of specialists despite declining fertility and a decline (represented by children and youth) in the total population.  相似文献

Estimates of the cell population kinetic parameters have been obtained for the erythroid cells of the young growing rat using the technique of labelled mitoses and these results have been analysed by a computer programme. The phases of the cell cycle for the proliferating cells have been shown to be of shorter duration than generally reported. Together with the differential cell count and initial labelling index these data have enabled estimates of the growth fraction, birthrate, flow rate, number of divisions and transit time to be determined for each compartment.  相似文献

A simple one-step method of freezing mouse embryos directly in liquid nitrogen is described. The main objective of this study was to assess post-thaw survival following predehydration in various mixtures of glycerol and sucrose. Also investigated was pretreatment with glycerol prior to dehydration and effects of embryo stage. When sucrose was held constant (0.25 M) and glycerol concentration varied (1.0-4.0 M), post-thaw survival was best (67%) in 2.0 M glycerol. Pretreatment in glycerol provided no advantage over no pretreatment. When glycerol was held constant (2.0 M) and sucrose concentration varied (0-1.0 M), optimum post-thaw survival (81%) was found in 0.5 M sucrose. Morulae survived better than blastocysts (86% vs 72%, respectively). Transfer of thawed embryos frozen by the optimum treatment (2.0 M glycerol + 0.5 M sucrose) resulted in a birthrate of 41%, compared to 54% for fresh controls. This technique could find application in freezing and thawing of livestock embryos on the farm.  相似文献

In northern France and Europe the population trebled after 1000 and then ceased to increase about 1300, before the Black Death caused an abrupt decline. The birthrate, as indicated by number of surviving children, increased and then declined. Death rates increased after 1250 and, of course, during the Black Death. Migration (assarting) was high after 1100 but ceased by about 1250. The evidence about resources, disease, and internecine strife is compatible with this scenario which can be predicted based on other animal populations.  相似文献

The recent steep decline in Iran's birthrate poses methodological and interpretive challenges insofar as statistical information on demographic factors cannot satisfactorily establish causalities or delineate processes of change. Our research suggests that this decline rests on the interplay of socio-cultural “idea” variables that augment factors of the developmental paradigm commonly used in population studies. Especially modernist ideas labeled “progress” in Iran have influenced reproductive behavior. Aiming to demonstrate the usefulness of idea-oriented qualitative research for understanding demographic dynamics represented quantitatively in the literature, we contribute to an explanation of a particular case as well as to demographic research methods.  相似文献

The influence of the Japanese superstition that females born in the year of Hinoe-Uma (Elder Fire Horse) possess undesirable characters and should not marry on the fertility of the Korean immigrant population in Japan was examined and compared with the influence of this superstition on the Japanese in Japan and the Korean population in Korea. The year of Hinoe-Uma occurs once in every 60 years according to the ancient Sino-Japanese almanac. For both the Koreans in Japan and the Japanese a remarkable drop in crude birthrates and a sharp increase in stillbirth rates was found for 1966. In contrast, Koreans in Korea showed only a steady decline in the crude birthrate. Clearly, the Japanese folk superstition played an important part in discouraging Koreans in Japan from having a child in 1966. The fact that no such effect was apparent among Koreans living in Korea suggests that this phenomenon is due to either the adoption or the mimicry of cultural practices on the part of the immigrant population.  相似文献

The psoralens are naturally occurring metabolites found in many crop plants; synthetic forms of 5-methoxypsoralen (bergapten) and 8-methoxypsoralen (xanthotoxin) are widely used in skin photochemotherapy. Our previous research documented that dietary bergapten and xanthotoxin reduced birthrates in female rats when males and females were exposed to these chemicals. The present study was designed to determine the cause of this reduced birthrate and whether this resulted from direct impact on the females. The study demonstrates that bergapten and xanthotoxin administered, either alone or in combination to female rats (mated to undosed males), significantly reduced the number of implantation sites, pups, and corpora lutea in dosed females compared with control animals. Additionally, full uterine weight and empty uterine weight were significantly reduced. These compounds also significantly reduced circulating estrogen levels in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, the psoralens significantly induced mRNAs of liver enzymes typically induced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, CYP1A1 and UGT1A6; the higher the dose, the greater the induction. UGT 2B1 mRNA, typically induced by phenobarbital-like compounds, was not significantly affected. Thus, enhanced oxidative metabolism and conjugation of estrogens in psoralen-treated animals may provide a partial explanation for the effects observed. These findings are also consistent with psoralen-induced reduction in ovarian follicular function and ovulation.  相似文献

Background

Despite a safe and effective vaccine, rubella vaccination programs with inadequate coverage can raise the average age of rubella infection; thereby increasing rubella cases among pregnant women and the resulting congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in their newborns. The vaccination coverage necessary to reduce CRS depends on the birthrate in a country and the reproductive number, R0, a measure of how efficiently a disease transmits. While the birthrate within a country can be known with some accuracy, R0 varies between settings and can be difficult to measure. Here we aim to provide guidance on the safe introduction of rubella vaccine into countries in the face of substantial uncertainty in R0.

Methods

We estimated the distribution of R0 in African countries based on the age distribution of rubella infection using Bayesian hierarchical models. We developed an age specific model of rubella transmission to predict the level of R0 that would result in an increase in CRS burden for specific birth rates and coverage levels. Combining these results, we summarize the safety of introducing rubella vaccine across demographic and coverage contexts.

Findings

The median R0 of rubella in the African region is 5.2, with 90% of countries expected to have an R0 between 4.0 and 6.7. Overall, we predict that countries maintaining routine vaccination coverage of 80% or higher are can be confident in seeing a reduction in CRS over a 30 year time horizon.

Conclusions

Under realistic assumptions about human contact, our results suggest that even in low birth rate settings high vaccine coverage must be maintained to avoid an increase in CRS. These results lend further support to the WHO recommendation that countries reach 80% coverage for measles vaccine before introducing rubella vaccination, and highlight the importance of maintaining high levels of vaccination coverage once the vaccine is introduced.  相似文献

Patterns of marriage and parenthood were studied in the families of 250 patients with severe hemophilia. The incidence of marriage among adult hemophiliacs was 82.5 percent that of age-matched males of the general United States population, as of 1968. Married hemophiliacs 30 years old or older had an average of 2.1 children each, as of 1971. In the periods 1950-1954 and 1960-1964, the numbers of children sired by hemophiliacs were 25 and 38 percent, respectively, of the numbers expected of age-matched men of the general United States population. This indicates a lesser ability or willingness to have children. The number of additional births to women who were already mothers of hemophiliacs was compared with that expected for women of the general population of the United States, matched for age and parity. In the years 1940 through 1954, the birthrates for the two groups were similar. However, in the years 1955-1968, the birthrate among carriers declined more rapidly than that in the general population. The improved medical treatment of hemophilia has apparently not resulted in a greater willingness of affected persons to transmit the defective gene.  相似文献

Many mutualisms host "exploiter" species that consume the benefits provided by one or both mutualists without reciprocating. Exploiters have been widely assumed to destabilize mutualisms, yet they are common. We develop models to explore conditions for local coexistence of obligate plant/pollinating seed parasite mutualisms and nonpollinating exploiters. As the larvae of both pollinators and (at a later time) exploiters consume seeds, we examine the importance of intraspecific and (asymmetric) interspecific competition among and between pollinators and exploiters for achieving three-way coexistence. With weak intra- and interspecific competition, exploiters can invade the stable mutualism and coexist with the mutualists (either stably or with oscillations), provided the exploiters' intrinsic birthrate (b(E)) slightly exceeds that of the pollinators. At higher b(E), all three species go locally extinct. When facing strong interspecific competition, exploiters cannot invade and coexist with the mutualists if intraspecific competition in pollinators and exploiters is weak. However, strong intraspecific competition in pollinators and exploiters facilitates exploiter invasion and coexistence and greatly expands the range of b(E) over which stable coexistence occurs. Our results suggest that mutualist/exploiter coexistence may be more easily achieved than previously thought, thus highlighting the need for a better understanding of competition among and between mutualists and exploiters.  相似文献

Communal nursing in the domestic cat has been observed in group living conditions. (In high density conditions, cats have social lives.) In our laboratory, when females were kept in the same cage, they delivered kittens nearly simultaneously, and started to nurse their kittens communally. This process, which was videotaped, was shown to be begun by the mother’s retrieving kittens. They seemed to have no ability to discriminate their own kittens from those of others, as our test of recognition of kittens showed. Communal nursing resulted in high mortality of kittens, the release of mothers from caring for kittens, and incomplete reproductive division of labour. Abortion was often observed in group-living cats in captivity. High mortality and low birthrate are helpful in controlling population. All members of the group were very familiar to each other, so that they formed a ‘pseudo’-kin group.  相似文献

The stability of Alfvén modes in a collisionless plasma with an anisotropic pressure in a highly curved magnetic field is studied. A linearized equation for describing longitudinally nonuniform MHD perturbations with frequencies below the bounce frequency is derived. In this equation, the perturbations of longitudinal and transverse pressures are calculated using a collisionless kinetic equation. It is shown that longitudinal fluxes of the transverse and longitudinal plasma energies give rise to pressure perturbations different from those in the Chew-Goldberger-Low collisionless hydrodynamics. The corresponding energy principle is constructed. A stability criterion for Alfvén modes is obtained and is found to be more stringent than that in the Chew-Gold-berger-Low model.  相似文献
