The ecology of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), populations from different regions of the R. Exe catchment was studied. Dace were the predominant cyprinid in the middle reaches whilst roach dominated in the slow-flowing lower reaches. Each species showed maximum growth rate and reproductive effort in its preferred habitat, i.e. where it dominated the fish community. The diet of roach consisted mainly of vegetable material, whilst dace were omnivorous. Although each species had a characteristic diet, there was considerable overlap. There was little evidence that variability between regions in growth rates of each species resulted from competition for food.  相似文献

Ten novel polymorphic microsatellites were isolated from the dace complex (Leuciscus leuciscus), which is a European cyprinid species. Four multiplex polymerase chain reaction sets were optimized in order to genotype 26 polymorphic loci in all, including 16 previously published cyprinid-specific loci. The level of genetic diversity was assessed in 142 dace individuals. We also successfully applied 26 of the microsatellites to 10 related species. These primers thus will be useful to assess population structure of the dace and other cyprinid species, with application for conservation issues and phylogeographical approaches.  相似文献

Both egg albumin and horse serum failed to induce systemic anaphylactic shock in cyprinid fish. The production of skin-sensitizing antibody by these fish to either horse serum, egg albumin or antigenic extracts of the cestode, Caryophyllaeus laticeps or the acantho-cephalan, Pomphorhynchus laevis , could not be demonstrated by homologous passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) or by heterologous PCA reaction in guinea-pigs. It was considered therefore, that fish are unable to produce such antibody, at least in response to these antigens, and that it is unlikely that skin-sensitizing antibody is involved in the rejection of C. laticeps by dace Leuciscus lueciscus (L.). The phylogenetic origins of skin-sensitizing antibody are discussed.  相似文献

The relict dace (Relictus solitarius) is an endemic minnow restricted to isolated spring systems within Butte, Goshute, Ruby and Steptoe valleys in the eastern Nevada portion of the Great Basin. It is the only native fish in these basins, but speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus) have been introduced into some localities in Ruby Valley and, based on morphology, the two species are believed to have hybridized in those areas. We used DNA sequence data from one mitochondrial gene (cytochrome b) and one nuclear intron (S7) to determine if putative relict dace populations in Ruby Valley share mtDNA haplotypes with speckled dace, or show signs of hybridization. Results of our analyses show that 11 of 16 Ruby Valley populations sampled contain only speckled dace, and one speckled dace population exhibited signs of limited introgressive hybridization. The remaining five Ruby Valley populations that were sampled contain relict dace that remain genetically distinct from speckled dace. The integrity of the Ruby Valley relict dace populations should be actively protected, particularly in the area surrounding Ruby Lake where speckled dace have been widely introduced.  相似文献

Relative abundance and within-lake distributions of three fishes, northern redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos), finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus), and central mudminnow (Umbra limi), were examined using minnow traps in Tuesday Lake, a small bog lake in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan. For these species, catches in minnow traps placed at the perimeter of the lake were 21 to 52 times higher than catches in midlake traps. Variance: mean ratios of perimeter trap catches indicated that both dace species were highly aggregated while the distribution of mudminnows was less aggregated or random. Over an 11 day period during which all fish caught were removed from the lake, catch per unit effort (CPUE) of both dace species declined in response to fish removal. In contrast, CPUE for mudminnows was low initially, increased to an asymptote and then declined only in the last 5 days of the fish removal. The patterns of CPUE for mudminnows indicated that mudminnow trapability and/or activity was reduced in the presence of high densities of dace. The low abundance of dace in traps with many mudminnows suggested mudminnows avoided traps already containing dace. Throughout the removal period, CPUE provided an accurate index of dace abundance, whereas this was true for mudmnnows only after dace populations had been reduced drastically. Therefore, in any use of minnow traps to estimate populations, both spatial distributions and relative species abundance of small fishes must be taken into account.  相似文献

The distribution and growth of roach and dace in the R. Exe catchment was studied. Distribution conformed to the classic theories of zonation, although human interference extended or reduced the range of species. Distinct differences were found in the growth rates of roach and dace between different regions of the catchment. Both species achieved their fastest growth in zones where the river topography portrayed their 'preferred' habitat characteristics, i.e. the fast-flowing middle and slow-flowing lower reaches for dace and roach, respectively. Female roach were found to grow considerably faster than male fish, whilst no sexual differentiation in growth rates was found in dace. Considerable fluctuations in year class strength were observed in both species.  相似文献

Foskett Spring is a small isolated desert spring in the Warner Basin of Oregon containing an undescribed subspecies of speckled dace protected under the US Endangered Species Act. Uncertainty regarding the taxonomic status of Foskett dace has raised questions about their evolutionary relationship to other more abundant populations in the Warner Basin. To address these questions, we sequenced 1,982 base pairs (bp) of the ND2 and cyt-b genes of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for 85 fish from Foskett Spring, the surrounding Warner Basin, and the adjacent Goose Lake Basin. We observed 58 unique mtDNA haplotypes defined by 96 bp substitutions in both genes. MtDNA sequences were highly divergent and reciprocally monophyletic between dace from the Warner and Goose Lake Basins, with sequence divergences (5 and 3% at ND2 and cyt-b, respectively) in the range usually observed between fish species. In contrast, mean sequence divergence between Foskett dace and other Warner Basin populations was less than 1%, with no evidence of reciprocal monophyly among mtDNA lineages. These results indicate that Foskett dace and other populations in the Warner Basin are approximately equally diverged from one another evolutionarily, suggesting similar times of divergence since the late Pleistocene. We believe further studies are needed to determine if rapid evolution of novel traits have occurred in dace inhabiting the unique ecological setting of Foskett Spring during the past 10,000 years.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Higher than average ambient water temperature in the first year of life may be responsible for strong cohorts of adult cyprinid fish. Whilst temperature explains much of the variation in year‐class strength (YCS), however, it is not the only influential factor as high temperature does not inevitably yield strong year‐classes. Furthermore, years in which a strong year‐class is prevalent in one species do not necessarily result in strong year‐classes in other coexisting species, suggesting other biotic and abiotic factors are important in regulating recruitment success. 2. The relationships between water temperature, river discharge, the position of the Gulf Stream, 0‐group fish growth and recruitment success (YCS) were examined in three cyprinid fish species in an English lowland river, using a 15‐year data set. 3. Mean length of 0‐group fish at the end of the summer was positively correlated with water temperature (cumulative degree‐days >12 °C) and negatively correlated with river discharge (cumulative discharge‐days above basal discharge rate). Water temperature was negatively correlated with river discharge. 4. YCS was positively correlated with mean 0‐group fish length at the end of the summer and with the position of the North Wall of the Gulf Stream. 5. ’Critical periods’ (i.e. periods in the first summer of life when fish may be more susceptible to increases in river discharge) were difficult to discern because of interannual variations in river discharge relative to the timing of fish hatching. YCS of roach and chub was most strongly correlated with discharge in the period from June to September inclusive, while YCS of dace was most significantly correlated with discharge in August. 6. River discharge (rather than water temperature) may be the key factor in determining YCS, either directly (through discharge‐induced mortality) or indirectly (via reduced growth at lower water temperatures, discharge‐associated increases in energy expenditure or reduced food availability). It could be that, in effect, water temperature determines potential YCS while discharge determines realised YCS.  相似文献

The threatened status of redside dace, Clinostomus elongatus, in Michigan inhibits study and management of remnant populations of the species. We present a phenotypic approach to evaluate the use of redside dace from New York as behavioral and physiological models for Michigan populations. We evaluated behavioral similarity by comparing patterns of microhabitat use and physiological similarity by comparing resting routine metabolic rates measured in the field. Variation between sites in available microhabitat made direct comparisons difficult; however, redside dace in Michigan and New York showed a common preference for mid-water positions in the deepest parts of pools under overhanging structure. Field measurements at 10°C showed that Michigan fish had higher metabolic rates than rates predicted for New York fish at the same temperature, though biological significance of this difference is questionable. In laboratory experiments, we measured metabolic rate and upper thermal tolerance in relation to acclimation temperatures of 6–20°C using redside dace collected from four streams in New York. Redside dace showed a significant increase in metabolic rate as acclimation temperature increased (Q10=2.3). Critical thermal maxima (CTM) of New York redside dace also increased with acclimation temperature. Obstacles related to the transferability of habitat use data and variation in physiology due to uncontrolled and unmeasured environmental factors in the field lead us to urge caution when extrapolating behavioral and physiological characteristics between widely-separated populations of a species. Despite these obstacles, we described useful patterns of microhabitat use and provided estimates of physiological tolerances that will assist resource managers in the recovery of Michigan redside dace.  相似文献

The fundamental features of the primary responses of dace Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), a freshwater cyprinid, to a number of standard antigens—haemocyanin, bovine serum albumin, horse serum, a bacterial antigen and an erythrocyte suspension, were examined. The fish were capable of producing either precipitating or agglutinating antibody in response to each of these antigens. Determinations of latent periods of antibody production by dace over a range of temperatures −18, 10, 5 and 2°C, showed that although the latent periods of the primary response increased with decreasing temperature, fish were able to produce antibodies to the erythrocyte antigen at 2°C and to the Salmonella and horse serum protein antigens at 5°C. The demonstration of antibodies at 5 and 2°C suggests that the fish are capable of producing antibodies over the complete range of their normal environmental temperatures.  相似文献

Major life history characteristics of dace Leuciscus leuciscus from the R. Yenisei at Mirnoye (66° N, Central Siberia, Russia) were determined in June 1993 and were compared with those available throughout the distribution range of the species. Differences between populations located 25° further south and 8000 km away are smaller than those described for other freshwater fishes, whose distributions fall within that of dace. For all the populations, the growth rates ( K ) are inversely correlated with latitude but these rates for the actual growing season are faster in northern dace. The latitudinal (spatial) variations in the growth rates resemble the temporal variation described for the R. Frome (U.K.). Also, the variations in fecundity between populations are comparable to the temporal variations reported for this British river. Fecundity of the Yenisei dace was correlated with female length [log F=– 3–6284+4–0424 x log L ] but these females spawned lower numbers of eggs than other populations; and the size of their eggs, like those of the Siberian Ust'Ilim dace, did not vary with female length. We hypothesize that a similar spatio-temporal response to low water temperature, coupled with limitations of energy for reproduction, may result in a constant egg size in Siberian dace. The effects of other selective forces cannot, however, be excluded.  相似文献

Synopsis Diet and annual production of two cyprinid fishes in the Piscataquis River, Maine, were investigated before and after extensive deforestation of the surrounding watershed. Observed patterns were evaluated relative to post-logging changes in the benthic macroinvertebrate community, and to differences in ecomorphology between the two fishes. Prey selection was generally density-dependent for both predator species throughout the study, but significant exceptions to density-dependence were observed for several aquatic insect lifemode groups (e.g., swimmers, climbers, burrowers). This apparent preference/avoidance for certain prey taxa by fish predators could be adequately explained by differential availability (vulnerability) among prey taxa. Compared to the year before logging, significant post-logging changes in diet composition and gut fullness were observed for both blacknose dace,Rhinichthys atratulus, and creek chub,Semotilus atromaculatus, concomitant with post-logging changes in the availability of benthic prey. Annual production of blacknose dace was significantly lower (52.7 vs. 37.7 kg ha–1 y–1) in the year following logging. In contrast, annual production of creek chub increased significantly after logging, from 8.6 to 17.4 kg ha–1 y–1. Because post-logging changes in the physical environment were probably not sufficient to directly affect fish populations, we hypothesize that blacknose dace were morphologically constrained to feed on a declining aquatic prey resource, with a resultant decline in production. In contrast, the generalist creek chub switched to a non-aquatic prey resource (terrestrial arthropods) and no decline in production was observed for that species.  相似文献

1. Climatic effects are increasingly being recognised as an important factor causing inter‐annual variability in organism abundances in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This study investigated the relationships between water temperature (cumulative degree‐days >12 °C), river discharge (cumulative discharge‐days above basal discharge rate), the position of the North Wall of the Gulf Stream (NWGS), and the 0+ growth (September mean length) and recruitment success (year‐class strength, YCS) of three species of cyprinid fishes in two contrasting English lowland rivers, using a 21‐year dataset. 2. Contrary to the majority of studies on 0+ fishes, growth in the Yorkshire Ouse was most significantly correlated with river discharge, with water temperature of less importance. By contrast, temperature was more influential than discharge in the River Trent, possibly because of its regulated hydrological regime, although none of the relationships were statistically significant for this river. 3. Year‐class strength of roach (Rutilus rutilus) was positively correlated with the position of the NWGS, and there was evidence of synchrony in recruitment success between rivers, but the relationships were poorer for chub (Leuciscus cephalus) and dace (Leuciscus leuciscus). The strongest relationships between YCS and discharge during specific time periods were for when the fish were in their early (especially larval) developmental stages, although none of the relationships were statistically significant because of inter‐annual variations in river discharge relative to the timing of fish hatching. 4. Fishes are key predators in the majority of aquatic ecosystems and, as such, fluctuations in their abundances can have implications for ecosystem functioning as a whole. This study has demonstrated an underlying influence of broad‐scale climatic effects on the recruitment of riverine fishes, in spite of local variations in biotic and abiotic conditions. The relative importance of various abiotic factors on the recruitment success of riverine cyprinid populations varies spatially and temporally. For example, river discharge is likely to be of relatively greater importance in poorly‐structured rivers or those that are prone to large and rapid fluctuations in flow, while temporal variations occur because of inter‐annual differences in river discharge relative to the timing of fish hatching. Biotic factors may also be important determinants of fish recruitment success, especially in rivers with stable and predictable flow regimes.  相似文献

1. To examine the strength and role of indirect effects through trophic cascades by omnivorous fish on algal biomass in streams, we introduced one of four fish species (ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, pike gudgeon Pseudogobio esocinus esocinus, Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis and pale chub Zacco platypus) in experimental pools. We also investigated the indirect effects of gudgeon, dace and chub on the growth of ayu. 2. We chose the four fish species across a continuum of omnivory. Ayu fed mainly on benthic algae, and gudgeon predominantly on invertebrates. Dace and chub fed on both algae and invertebrates, but dace preyed on invertebrates more than chub. 3. The presence of gudgeon, dace and chub reduced the number of algal-feeding invertebrates and increased the algal biomass through trophic cascades. Consequently, ayu growth rate over the experimental period in pools with one of the three fish species was 25.9-44.1 times greater than the growth rate in pools with only ayu. 4. The positive indirect effect on ayu growth was large for gudgeon and dace and small for chub, whereas the addition of ayu reduced ayu growth considerably due to intraspecific competition. 5. The relative intensity of indirect effects on ayu growth through trophic cascades was predictable from the food overlap between ayu and the other fishes. However, the similar strength of indirect effects by gudgeon and dace that fed differently on algae and invertebrates suggests that feeding behaviour, prey preference and trait-mediated indirect interactions were also important in the prediction.  相似文献

From March 1998 to February 1999, upstream fish passage was continuously monitored by video tape analysis at the fish lift Touvedo Dam on the Lima River, northern Portugal. A total of 1194 individuals from seven species were transferred by the lift. Cyprinids were the dominant group collected, with Iberian nase Chondrostoma polylepis (Steindachner) (31.8%) being the most abundant species, followed by Iberian barbel Barbus bocagei (Steindachner) (21.1%), Iberian dace Leuciscus carolitertii (Doadrio) (19.2%) and Iberian red roach Rutilus arcasii (Steindachner) (7.1%). Brown trout Salmo trutta fario (L.) and European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) accounted for 10.8%, whereas Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (L.) was rarely observed. Most cyprinid seasonal movements were observed in the spring and were associated with reproduction. The timing of the run varied and its beginning appeared to be mainly dependent on water temperature. Roach, dace and nase used the fish lift intensively from mid-April until the end of summer. Barbel use of the lift intensified in mid-May in association with warmer water. Salmonids migrated in June–July and autumn. Significant differences were not found in hourly activity, except for nase and barbel, in June and July, respectively. Fish passage was not related to river discharge. The relative effectiveness of the fish lift is discussed in relation to the various species.  相似文献

Urbanization alters stream and watershed hydrology so that fish from urban stream systems are confronted with extreme flows during storms and runoff events. To test whether residence in urban streams is associated with altered swimming ability, we compared sprint and endurance swimming performances of eight populations of blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus) from different watersheds along an urban/rural gradient. Watershed impervious surface cover, a measure of urbanization, was significantly correlated with sprint performance in dace from all stream types and endurance swimming performance (U(crit)) when only fish from urban streams were analyzed. Three estimators of water flow in a stream system, watershed area, mean annual discharge, and base-flow current speed, were all related to U(crit) in fish from nonurban streams. The U(crit) was significantly repeatable after 6 mo in the laboratory, but dace populations with exceptional U(crit) values lost ability under no-flow, "detraining" conditions. Sprint performance changed substantially in individual dace after 10 wk under no-flow conditions and was a significant function of the animal's original performance. Animals with high sprint performance tended to lose ability, whereas those with poor performance gained ability. Interpopulation differences in both sprint and endurance swimming were robust over multiple years of collection from the same sites.  相似文献

The longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae) appears as a relevant model to address environmental and ecological issues in an evolutionary perspective. Eleven microsatellite markers were characterized for this species. Eight of these loci were highly polymorphic for populations of this species. Between four to 10 loci were also successfully amplified in five closely related species. These markers are believed to be valuable tools for genetic analysis of populations of longnose dace and other Leuciscinae species.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared fish are commonly stocked into freshwaters to enhance recreational angling. As these fishes are often of high trophic position and attain relatively large sizes, they potentially interact with functionally similar resident fishes and modify food‐web structure. Hatchery‐reared barbel Barbus barbus are frequently stocked to enhance riverine cyprinid fish communities in Europe; these fish can survive for over 20 years and exceed 8 kg. Here, their trophic consequences for resident fish communities were tested using cohabitation studies, mainly involving chub Squalius cephalus, a similarly large‐bodied, omnivorous and long‐lived species. These studies were completed over three spatial scales: pond mesocosms, two streams and three lowland rivers, and used stable isotope analysis. Experiments in mesocosms over 100 days revealed rapid formation of dietary specializations and discrete trophic niches in juvenile B. barbus and S. cephalus. This niche partitioning between the species was also apparent in the streams over 2 years. In the lowland rivers, where fish were mature individuals within established populations, this pattern was also generally apparent in fishes of much larger body sizes. Thus, the stocking of these hatchery‐reared fish only incurred minor consequences for the trophic ecology of resident fish, with strong patterns of trophic niche partitioning and diet specialization. Application of these results to decision‐making frameworks should enable managers to make objective decisions on whether cyprinid fish should be stocked into lowland rivers according to ecological risk.  相似文献

Homing behaviour in cyprinid species has been demonstrated by a number of research workers during the past 35 years. The British work has been principally conducted through tank experimentation with roach, gudgeon and minnows, but limited field data indicating home range behaviour have also been published. Evidence is now presented, from a fish population assessment and management programme covering 6000 km of river fisheries in the Anglian region of eastern England, to suggest that home range mechanisms do not play a significant role in the overall stock dynamics of cyprinid species in major river systems.
An alternative hypothesis which fits the range of observed circumstances more closely is described, based on a perception of cyprinid communities as totally mobile populations influenced predominantly by river flow characteristics and behavioural responses to flow and seasonal temperature factors. This concept is illustrated with a sequential series of schematic diagrams of a river catchment in which the key factor of infinitely variable movement patterns interspersed with periods of passive downstream displacement (negatively size-related) is modified by increasing degrees of interference by river structures.
The implications of the alternative concept to the management of riverine fish populations is discussed and alternative strategies to the traditional style cyprinid stockings illustrated within the paper are suggested which do not rely on home range mechanisms.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The River Eden (Kent, England) holds a mixed coarse fish population in which minnows ( Phoxinus phoxinus ), gudgeon ( Gobio gobio ), chub ( Leuciscus cephalus ) and dace ( Leuciscus leuciscus ) are numerically predominant. Chub and dace provide the major interest to anglers and their growth and production were studied. Observed growth rates of both species were marginally below recorded averages from other British habitats. Back-calculations showed that year-class strength and relative growth rates varied between years. Instantaneous mortality rate Z was 0.147 for chub aged 1–10, 0.438 for chub aged 10 and over, and 0.172 for dace. Exclusive of the 0-group, fish numbers, biomass (wet wt) and production were found to be 0.1305 m-2, 19.12 gm-2 and 5.38 gm-2 year-1, respectively, for chub and 0.0968 m-2, 4.33 gm-2 and 1.69 gm-2 year-1 for dace. Smoothing of data produced theoretical production figures of 6.69 gm-2 year-1 for chub and 1.15 gm-2 year-1 for dace.  相似文献
