Imaging specific molecules and their interactions in space and time will be essential to understand how genomes create cells, how cells constitute organisms and how errant cells cause disease. Molecular imaging must be extended and applied from nanometre to metre scales and from milliseconds to days. The concept of morphophysiological regress as one of the main ways to biological progress, as well as its major factors (the sedentary and parasitic modes of life), are discussed. Some notions of regressive evolution are critically reviewed. Special attention is paid to evolutionary transformations of the nervous system, one of the main integrating factors in the body. All theories of evolutionary progress based on sedentary organisms are demonstrated to be untenable. The entire progressive evolution of Metazoa has been related to mobile life. Since regressive trends are common in the evolution, the phylogenetic tree of Metazoa requires serious revision.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that organisms living at different latitudes or in different environments adjust their metabolic activity to the prevailing conditions. However, do differences in energy turnover simply represent a phenotypic adaptation to the local environment, or are they genetically based? To test this, we obtained nestling stonechats (Saxicola torquata) from equatorial Kenya (0 degrees N), Ireland (51.5 degrees N), Austria (47.5 degrees N) and Kazakhstan (51.5 degrees N). Birds were hand-raised and kept in Andechs, Germany. We measured their resting metabolic rates (RMR) and locomotor activity at an age of ca. 14 months (July) and 20 months (January), when birds went through postnuptial moult (July), and neither moulted nor exhibited enlarged gonads or migratory activity (January). RMR was generally higher during moult, but differed among populations: RMR was lowest in the resident Kenyan birds, higher in mostly sedentary Irish birds, and highest in migratory Austrian and Kazakhstan birds. Thus our data demonstrate that even in birds kept from early life under common-garden conditions, the ''pace of life'', as indicated by metabolic turnover, is lower in sedentary tropical than in north-temperate migratory individuals of the same species. Such intrinsically low energy expenditure in sedentary tropical birds may have important implications for slow development, delayed senescence and high longevity in many tropical organisms.  相似文献

Summary Quantitative samples of the bottom fauna obtained from a tropical freshwater fish pond during a period of two years were studied with regard to species composition, zonal variation and seasonal fluctuation. Two different zones with differences in faunal composition could be distinguished. The littoral zone was dominated by Mollusca, whereas Oligochaetes were predominant in the profundal zone. Most of the organisms showed their peaks in the months January to April. Breeding activities ofVivipara bengalensis, Digoniostoma cerameopoma, Melanoides granifera andPisidium clarkeanum as evidenced by presence of younger length groups in the populations were also observed during the same period (January to April). The influence of environmental factors as temperature, alkalinity and food were discussed as probable causes for the peaks in abundance. The average number of total organisms per square metre was found to be comparatively high indicating a high standing crop. Differences observed in the total number of organisms present have been attributed to inflow of water resulting in sudden alteration of the nutrient condition of the bottom mud. The seasonal variations of the standing crop of bottom fauna during both the years have been found to be influenced by fluctuations of the bivalve mollusc,Lamellidens corrianus. The availability of sufficient amount of benthic fauna for consumption by bottom feeding fishes has been indicated.This work formed part of a thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy to the University of Calcutta, India in 1964.  相似文献

Glutathione‐S‐transferases have been identified in all the living species examined so far, yet little is known about their function in marine organisms. In a previous report, the recently identified GST from Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica (LeGST) was classified into the rho class GST, but there are several unique features of LeGST that may justify reclassification, which could represent specific shellfish GSTs. Here, we determined the crystal structure of LeGST, which is a shellfish specific class of GST. The structural analysis showed that the relatively open and wide hydrophobic H‐site of the LeGST allows this GST to accommodate various substrates. These results suggest that the H‐site of LeGST may be the result of adaptation to their environments as sedentary organisms. Proteins 2013. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The movement patterns of species may affect their susceptibility to modified habitat structure. It is likely that sedentary species perceive habitat features at smaller spatial extents compared to mobile species, but there is a lack of experimental research on the effects of fine-scale habitat characteristics on organisms of differing mobility. Spiders display two basic mobility levels based on foraging behavior: web-building species are restricted to specific sites whereas active hunters are mobile. We collected spiders inhabiting sagebrush shrubs with a structurally enhanced, unmodified, or removed understory, to examine (1) whether habitat structure in the immediate vicinity of shrubs affected cursorial and web spiders differently in terms of abundance and species richness and (2) which genera most contributed to changes in community composition. Shrubs without understory had reduced cursorial spider densities and species richness compared to shrubs with added and unmodified understories, whereas web spiders lacked significant responses to treatments. Community-level differences based on relative abundance of genera were detected in cursorial spiders but not in web spiders, despite a strong contribution of the web-building genus Theridion to community dissimilarities. Our results support the hypothesis that sedentary organisms may be sensitive to contiguous habitat at finer spatial scales than cursorial organisms, and highlight the risks associated with only collecting local habitat information when studying mobile species.  相似文献

Abstract Spatial and temporal patterns of abundance of animals and plants must be quantified before models to explain distributions can be developed. These patterns also provide essential data for measuring potential effects of environmental disturbances. Studies in many different habitats have shown that most organisms, particularly invertebrates, have highly variable and interactive patterns of abundance, with much variability at the smallest temporal and spatial scales. Intertidal boulder fields in New South Wales, Australia, support a diverse fauna, many species of which are relatively rare. These habitats are commonly found near rock‐platforms and in sheltered estuaries and are subjected to many human disturbances. Although there have been a few studies on the fauna in boulder fields, none has documented variability of the assemblage using multivariate and univariate techniques and most studies have not incorporated different spatial and temporal scales. This study quantifies spatial variation at three scales (metres, tens of metres alongshore and tens of metres upshore) and temporal variation at two scales (3 months and 2 years) of the assemblage of molluscs and echinoderms in a sheltered boulder field subjected to little natural or human disturbance. Multivariate analyses revealed that each site contained a distinct assemblage, mainly due to the relative abundances of a few species. Most species, those generally only found under boulders and common, widespread species, had considerable spatial variability in abundances, with more than 90% measured at the smallest scale, that is metre to metre within a site. Changes in abundances over 3 months or 2 years varied among species and sites in unpredictable ways. These data show that sampling designs to measure impacts on these fauna will need to be complex and must incorporate a number of spatial and temporal scales if they are to be able to detect impact against such a variable background.  相似文献

Most previous stress-immune research focused on the immunosuppressive effects of stress on acquired immunity. More recently, it has become clear that acute stressor exposure can potentiate innate, as well as suppress acquired, immunity. For example, acute stress improves recovery from bacterial inflammation, a classic in vivo measure of innate immunity. The previous work was done in sedentary organisms. Physical activity status can modulate the impact of stress on immune function. The following studies tested the hypothesis that the effect of stress on inflammation after subcutaneous challenge with bacteria (Escherichia coli) is facilitated by physical activity. The results were that sedentary, stressed rats resolved their inflammation 1-2 days faster and have increased circulating neutrophils compared with their nonstressed, sedentary counterparts. In contrast, physically active, stressed rats resolve their inflammation 3-4 days faster and have increased circulating and inflammatory site neutrophils compared with their nonstressed counterparts. Importantly, the beneficial impact of stress on inflammation recovery and neutrophil migration was greater in the physically active, than sedentary, stressed rats. Thus physical activity status facilitates the positive effect of acute stress on innate immunity.  相似文献

The diversity of symbionts (commensals, mutualists or parasites) that share the same host species may depend on opportunities and constraints on host exploitation associated with host phenotype or environment. Various host traits may differently influence host accessibility and within‐host population growth of each symbiont species, or they may determine the outcome of within‐host interactions among coexisting species. In turn, phenotypic diversity of a host species may promote divergent exploitation strategies among its symbiotic organisms. We studied the distribution of two feather mite species, Proctophyllodes sylviae and Trouessartia bifurcata, among blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla wintering in southern Spain during six winters. The host population included migratory and sedentary individuals, which were unequally distributed between two habitat types (forests and shrublands). Visual mite counts showed that both mite species often coexisted on sedentary blackcaps, but were seldom found together on migratory blackcaps. Regardless of host habitat, Proctophyllodes were highly abundant and Trouessartia were scarce on migratory blackcaps, but the abundance of both mite species converged in intermediate levels on sedentary blackcaps. Coexistence may come at a cost for Proctophyllodes, whose load decreased when Trouessartia was present on the host (the opposite was not true). Proctophyllodes load was positively correlated with host wing length (wings were longer in migratory blackcaps), while Trouessartia load was positively correlated to uropygial gland size (sedentary blackcaps had bigger glands), which might render migratory and sedentary blackcaps better hosts for Proctophyllodes and Trouessartia, respectively. Our results draw a complex scenario for mite co‐existence in the same host species, where different mite species apparently take advantage of, or are constrained by, divergent host phenotypic traits. This expands our understanding of bird–mite interactions, which are usually viewed as less dynamic in relation to variation in host phenotype, and emphasizes the role of host phenotypic divergence in the diversification of symbiotic organisms.  相似文献

Inbreeding is a potent evolutionary force shaping the distribution of genetic variation within and among populations of plants and animals. Yet, our understanding of the forces shaping the expression and evolution of nonrandom mating in general, and inbreeding in particular, remains remarkably incomplete. Most research on plant mating systems focuses on self-fertilization and its consequences for automatic selection, inbreeding depression, purging, and reproductive assurance, whereas studies of animal mating systems have often assumed that inbreeding is rare, and that natural selection favors traits that promote outbreeding. Given that many sessile and sedentary marine invertebrates and marine macroalgae share key life history features with seed plants (e.g., low mobility, modular construction, and the release of gametes into the environment), their mating systems may be similar. Here, we show that published estimates of inbreeding coefficients (FIS) for sessile and sedentary marine organisms are similar and at least as high as noted in terrestrial seed plants. We also found that variation in FIS within invertebrates is related to the potential to self-fertilize, disperse, and choose mates. The similarity of FIS for these organismal groups suggests that inbreeding could play a larger role in the evolution of sessile and sedentary marine organisms than is currently recognized. Specifically, associations between traits of marine invertebrates and FIS suggest that inbreeding could drive evolutionary transitions between hermaphroditism and separate sexes, direct development and multiphasic life cycles, and external and internal fertilization.  相似文献

Third-instar nymphs of the Australian assassin bug, Pristhesancus plagipennis (Walker), were released into cotton plots at two release densities and two crop growth stages to test their biological control potential. Release rates of 2 and 5 nymphs per metre row resulted in field populations of 0.51 and 1.38 nymphs per metre row, respectively, indicating that over 70% of nymphs died or emigrated within two weeks of release. Effective release rates of 1.38 nymphs per metre row reduced the number of Helicoverpa spp. larvae in the plots for a 7-week period. Crop yields were significantly greater in the plots to which P. plagipennis nymphs were released, with the effective release rate of 1.38 nymphs per metre row providing equivalent yields as insecticide treated plots. The data suggest that P. plagipennis has the capacity to reduce Helicoverpa spp. larvae densities in cotton crops when augmented through inundative release.  相似文献

A species list of prey organisms of Rana temporaria in a blanket bog and adjacent man-modified (mainly grassland) habitats is presented. From this it is concluded, in line with the findings of other authors, that this species is unselective and sedentary in its feeding habits. Argument is presented suggesting these habits are ideally suited to the needs of a bog-land predator. It is further suggested that these habits tend to make R. temporaria a particularly effective predator of ground-living predatory and parasitic insects.  相似文献

Water movement is shown to be a very important environmental factor. It largely determines the distribution of substrates and the position and shape of organisms, especially in sedentary inhabitants of rocky littoral areas. In spite of its great ecological significance, water movement has not yet been measured in these areas. However, earlier information obtained in the fields of oceanography, geology and geomorphology, as well as in connection with marine construction, offer sufficient background data to assess the major hydrodynamic phenomena in littoral habitats. Thus scientific diving made it possible in numerous cases to relate cause and effect. The utilisation of two metre field margins by butterflies was studied at three farms in Essex, south east England between 1997 and 2000. The aim of the study was to establish whether field margins, as set up and managed under Countryside Stewardship Scheme guidelines, were beneficial to common farmland butterflies. Thirteen two metre margins (total length 4478 m) and three sections with no margin (total length 656 m) were monitored over the 4 year period using the transect method. Significantly more Maniola jurtina, Thymelicus sylvestris and Thymelicus lineola were seen on the two metre margins than on the control sections, but there was a significant reduction in abundance of Thymelicus sylvestris, Thymelicus lineola and Ochlodes venata on the margins over the 4 year study period. Only the abundance of Pyronia tithonus increased significantly on the two metre margins over that period.  相似文献

Synopsis Stomach content data from 32 species of Japanese butterflyfishes of the family Chaetodontidae were used to classify them into feeding groups and to determine their important food resources. Four major feeding groups were distinguished: (1) obligative coral feeders which prey exclusively or mostly on Scleractinian corals, (2) facultative coral feeders that take both corals and other benthic organisms, (3) noncoralline invertebrate feeders which consume benthic invertebrates other than corals, and (4) zooplankton feeders. Ten species representing 31% of the butterflyfishes belong to the first category. The second and third categories include 13 (41%) and 8 (25%) species, respectively. The fourth category is represented by only one species which picks individual zooplankters, especially calanoid copepods, in midwater above the reefs. Facultative coral feeders consumed varying quantities of scleractinians (from 2 to 74% of food volume), along with a variety of benthic organisms including algae, alcyonarians, sea anemones, sedentary polychaetes, sponges, hydroids, etc. Noncoralline invertebrate feeders, on the other hand, tend to have low diversified diets, predominated by one prey item such as sea anemones, zoanthideans, polychaetes, or colonial ascidians. These dietary data suggest that scleractinian corals are the most important food resource for the Japanese butterflyfishes, and next important are sea anemones, sedentary polychaetes, alcyonarians, and algae.  相似文献

Summary Stromatoporoids, together with other sedentary organisms, form bioherms in the Ordovician Gordon Group which were deposited on a carbonate platform of the Western Tasmanian Terrane. The shallow marine carbonates of the older formations show monotonous lithofacies and biota. The variety of the lithofacies and the diversity of sedentary organisms increases in the younger formations which exhibit evidence of subaerial exposure (fissure fillings and mud-cracks). These phenomena partly reflect the tectonic history of the Western Tasmania Terrane, and probably indicate a general increase in amplitude of sea-level change during the late Ordovician (Caradoc-Ashgill). The bioherms are most frequent in the uppermost horizons (the Den Formation—late Caradoc to early Ashgill?), where the outerops exhibit floatstone and bindstone fabrics. Stromatoporoids and corals construct generally small-scale (less than several meters in width and less than 1 m in height) binding structure. Based on growth forms, stromatoporoid genera are assigned to two morphotypes. Morphotype A generally shows laminar to low domical forms (low height/width ratio) exhibiting ragged margins and sediment inclusions within skeletons. In contrast, morphotype B consists of high domical growth forms (high height/width ratio) and lacks sediment inclusions. These differences in growth forms are interpreted to reflect different modes of biomineralization, together with environmental preferences of the individual organisms. Results of this study and previous publications, overall suggest a progressive development and diversification of biohermal biota in the middle to upper Ordovician of Tasmania. The scale and diversity of the Tasmanian bioherms are probably much smaller than the bioherms and reefs of the younger ages (Silurian and Devonian), and for stromatoporoids, the tendency of diversification is consistent with those of the other Ordovician sections. The Gordon Group provides useful information regarding the early evolutionary history of the Ordovician-Devonian reef-forming communities.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important signaling molecules with regulatory functions, and in young and adult organisms, the formation of ROS is increased during skeletal muscle contractions. However, ROS can be deleterious to cells when not sufficiently counterbalanced by the antioxidant system. Aging is associated with accumulation of oxidative damage to lipids, DNA, and proteins. Given the pro-oxidant effect of skeletal muscle contractions, this effect of age could be a result of excessive ROS formation. We evaluated the effect of acute exercise on changes in blood redox state across the leg of young (23±1 years) and older (66±2 years) sedentary humans by measuring the whole blood concentration of the reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms of the antioxidant glutathione. To assess the role of physical activity, lifelong physically active older subjects (62±2 years) were included. Exercise increased the venous concentration of GSSG in an intensity-dependent manner in young sedentary subjects, suggesting an exercise-induced increase in ROS formation. In contrast, venous GSSG levels remained unaltered during exercise in the older sedentary and active groups despite a higher skeletal muscle expression of the superoxide-generating enzyme NADPH oxidase. Arterial concentration of GSH and expression of antioxidant enzymes in skeletal muscle of older active subjects were increased. The potential impairment in exercise-induced ROS formation may be an important mechanism underlying skeletal muscle and vascular dysfunction with sedentary aging. Lifelong physical activity upregulates antioxidant systems, which may be one of the mechanisms underlying the lack of exercise-induced increase in GSSG.  相似文献

The abilities of bacteria isolated from eight marine sedentary organisms, six marine sponges (Spirastrella sp., Phyllospongia sp., Ircinia sp., Aaptos sp., Azorica sp. and Axinella sp.), one soft coral (Lobophytum sp.) and one alga (Sargassum sp.) to produce industrial enzymes (amylase, carboxymethylcellulase and protease) were examined. The mean total viable counts of the bacterial isolates ranged from 8.7 × 104 to 8.4 × 105 cfu/g wet weight of the organism. All eight organisms harboured amylase (0.05–0.5 IU/ml), carboxymethylcellulase (0.05–0.5 IU/ml) and protease (0.1–0.5 IU/ml) producing bacteria. Of 56 bacterial strains tested, as many as 60 to 83% of the strains produced at least one of the three enzymes, and 47% of strains were able to produce all three enzymes. High activities (> 0.5 IU/ml) of the three enzymes were recorded in bacterial strains belonging to the genera Alcaligenes and Bacillus. From the results of this study, it appears that bacteria associated with marine sedentary organisms are the novel source of industrial enzymes for possible commercial applications and may play an important role in enzyme‐catalysed organic matter cycling in marine environments.  相似文献

The lottery model is a stochastic population model in which juveniles compete for space. Examples include sedentary organisms such as trees in a forest and members of marine benthic communities. The behavior of this model appears to be characteristic of that found in other sorts of stochastic competition models. In a community with two species, it was previously demonstrated that coexistence of the species is possible if adult death rates are small and environmental variation is large. Environmental variation is incorporated by assuming that the birth rates and death rates are random variables. Complicated conditions for coexistence and competitive exclusion have been derived elsewhere. In this paper, simple and easily interpreted conditions are found by using the technique of diffusion approximation. Formulae are given for the stationary distribution and means and variances of population fluctuations. The shape of the stationary distribution allows the stability of the coexistence to be evaluated.  相似文献
