1. In situ enclosure experiments were performed in the mesotrophic Bermejales reservoir to evaluate the algal response to changes in the nutrient supply and in the zooplankton size structure and density in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The experiments were conducted during the spring bloom of nanoplanktonic diatoms in 1989. 2. Nutrient enrichment promoted a great increase of phytoplankton biomass indicating a strong nutrient limitation on phytoplankton growth. Total phytoplankton biomass was significantly lower in the Daphina-added enclosures at a given nutrient level and strong direct an indirect effect of zooplankton on phytoplankton community structure and nutrient availability were observed. 3. Most of the nanoplanktonic species were effectively grazed but species with protective coverings and large size colonies were favoured by grazers and small chlorococcales were unaffected probably because of their compensatory high growth rates. The decrease in total biomass imposed by grazers is attributable mainly to the decrease of Cyclotella ocellata, the most abundant species. This taxon suffers two net effects of zooplankton: direct grazing and the indirect decrease of Si availability caused by the growth of C. ocellata which was promoted by P excretion by zooplankton. Indirect effects of grazers on Si availability should, therefore, be taken into account in explaining phytoplankton succession and community structure. 4. In this experiment grazers affected considerably the nanoplanktonic community in Bermejales reservoir. The extent which they were affected, however, depended not only on the algal size as a determinant of edibility but also greatly on the specific nutrient requirements and taxonomic features of the algal species.  相似文献

The elemental and fatty acid composition of seston was studied for 3 years, from May to October, in a small Reservoir. Under comparatively low C:P ratio, multivariate canonical analysis revealed no straightforward simple correlations between phosphorus and single ω3 PUFA species, but complex significant interaction between elemental composition (stoichiometry) of seston and total sestonic ω3 PUFA as a whole. Since sestonic C, P and N were found to originate mostly from phytoplankton, the contents of particulate elements and PUFA were attributed to single species in periods of their pronounced dominance. Phytoplankton species of genera of Stephanodiscus, Peridinium, Gomphosphaeria, Planktothrix and Anabaena in periods of their pronounced dominance had relatively constant species-specific elemental and PUFA composition. Phytoplankton species significantly differed in their elemental and PUFA composition, as well as in ratios of C:N, N:P, PUFA:P and partly C:P that indicate food quality for zooplankton. Hence, there were no phytoplankton species of clearly high or low nutritional value. All of phytoplankters, or at least detritus, that originated from them, may meet specific elemental and biochemical requirements of specific groups of zooplankton. Dividing phytoplankton on basis of their elemental and biochemical composition, i.e., nutrition quality, into large taxa (cyanobacteria, diatoms, etc.) appeared to be too coarse for assessing nutritional value for zooplankton.  相似文献

In the nearshore coastal waters along the Antarctic Peninsula, a recurrent shift in phytoplankton community structure, from diatoms to cryptophytes, has been documented. The shift was observed in consecutive years (1991–1996) during the austral summer and was correlated in time and space with glacial melt‐water runoff and reduced surface water salinities. Elevated temperatures along the Peninsula will increase the extent of coastal melt‐water zones and the seasonal prevalence of cryptophytes. This is significant because a change from diatoms to cryptophytes represents a marked shift in the size distribution of the phytoplankton community, which will, in turn, impact the zooplankton assemblage. Cryptophytes, because of their small size, are not grazed efficiently by Antarctic krill, a keystone species in the food web. An increase in the abundance and relative proportion of cryptophytes in coastal waters along the Peninsula will likely cause a shift in the spatial distribution of krill and may allow also for the rapid asexual proliferation of carbon poor gelatinous zooplankton, salps in particular. This scenario may account for the reported increase in the frequency of occurrence and abundance of large swarms of salps within the region. Salps are not a preferred food source for organisms that occupy higher trophic levels in the food web, specifically penguins and seals, and thus negative feedbacks to the ecology of these consumers can be anticipated as a consequence of shifts in phytoplankton community composition.  相似文献

1. Numerous studies have quantified the relative contribution of terrestrial‐ and phytoplankton‐derived carbon sources to zooplankton secondary production in lakes. However, few investigated the pathways along which allochthonous and autochthonous carbon (C) was actually conveyed to consumers. 2. We suggest that the combined use of fatty acid and stable isotope biomarkers could solve this issue. We conducted a field study on two oligotrophic lakes, in which primary production increased significantly between 2002 and 2004. We used modelling to estimate the contribution of terrestrial‐ and phytoplankton‐derived C to particulate organic C (POC) and zooplankton production from their δ13C values in 2002 and 2004. 3. According to the isotope model, phytoplankton‐derived C accounted for a major part of the POC pool in both lakes and supported more Daphnia sp. production in 2004 than in 2002. Fatty acid data revealed that increased contribution of algal‐C to Daphnia production, although common between both lakes, was achieved through C pathways that were different. In one lake, Daphnia grazed more intensively on phytoplankton, whereas in the other there was greater grazing on bacteria. In the latter case, the increased primary production resulted in greater release of algal‐derived dissolved organic C (DOC), which may have supported extra bacterial and eventually Daphnia, production. 4. This is the first study illustrating that the combination of fatty acid and stable isotope biomarkers could further our understanding of the factors controlling the relative magnitude of food webs pathways conveying organic matter to zooplankton.  相似文献

1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the ω3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5ω3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3ω3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos‐aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos‐aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6ω3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.  相似文献

浮游植物所含的不饱和脂肪酸是测定其作为食物质量的指标,并在浮游植物向浮游动物及其它动物能量转化过程中起着关键的作用,必需不饱和脂肪酸的缺乏有利于水华的形成。球形棕囊藻(Phaeocystis globosa)和铜绿微囊藻(Microcystis aeruginosa)分别是常见的海洋和淡水水华藻类,该文分析了它们在不同生长期的脂肪酸组成,探讨了这两种藻类的脂肪酸组成特征。球形棕囊藻和铜绿微囊藻的脂肪酸碳链长为14~20个碳原子,脂肪酸种类组成都比较简单,以饱和脂肪酸为主,未检测到二十碳五烯酸(Eicosapentaenoic acid,EPA)和二十二碳六烯酸 (Docosahexaenoic acid,DHA)等动物的必需脂肪酸。球形棕囊藻的总脂肪酸含量在247.294~735.44 μg·g-1干重之间,在对数期和延滞期含量最高的脂肪酸分别是C14:0和C16:0;而两株铜绿微囊藻的总脂肪酸在1 405.095~6 087.617μg·g-1干重之间,以C16:0含量最高。两株铜绿微囊藻的脂肪酸含量在对数期和延滞期差异明显(p<0.05),但球形棕囊藻的脂肪酸含量在不同生长期差别不大。由于缺乏必需脂肪酸EPA和DHA,球形棕囊藻和铜绿微囊藻不能为高营养级的生物提供必需的不饱和脂肪酸,不是浮游动物等生物的良好食物。因此球形棕囊藻和铜绿微囊藻作为浮游动物的食物质量较低,浮游动物对它们的捕食压力也较小,可能是这两种藻容易暴发水华的重要原因。  相似文献

In the search for better understanding on the nutritional quality of natural tropical plankton, samples were collected from shallow coastal waters facing the South China Sea during the dry monsoon (May-September) and the wet monsoon (November-April) seasons from March 1993 to July 1994. The total fatty acid content of the predominantly phytoplankton communities (25-200 microns sieve nets) varied four to fivefold with the lowest value occurring during the dry monsoon when blue-green became predominant. Saturated fatty acid content (SAFA), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and total omega 3 (sigma omega 3) showed the same seasonal pattern as the total fatty acid with high values in October to December 1993. When species of the dinoflagellate Peridinium and Ceratium were present in considerable amount, the docosahexaenoic acid DHA content was high, especially from March to May 1993. The maximum content of eicosapentaenoic acid EPA, total omega-3 fatty acid, PUFA and sigma omega 3 in phytoplankton occurred during the pre-monsoon period (October and November 1993) when the diatoms were present in large amounts. The larger fraction sample (> 200 microns sieve nets) which consisted predominantly of zooplankton had high amounts of PUFA from September to November 1993.  相似文献

In food-web studies, parasites are often ignored owing to their insignificant biomass. We provide evidence that parasites may affect trophic transfer in aquatic food webs. Many phytoplankton species are susceptible to parasitic fungi (chytrids). Chytrid infections of diatoms in lakes may reach epidemic proportions during diatom spring blooms, so that numerous free-swimming fungal zoospores (2-3 microm in diameter) are produced. Analysis shows that these zoospores are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and sterols (particularly cholesterol), which indicates that they provide excellent food for zooplankters such as Daphnia. In life-table experiments using the large diatom Asterionella formosa as food, Daphnia growth increased significantly in treatments where a parasite was present. By grazing on the zoospores, Daphnia acquired important supplementary nutrients and were able to grow. When large inedible algae are infected by parasites, nutrients within the algal cells are consumed by these chytrids, some of which, in turn, are grazed by Daphnia. Thus, chytrids transfer energy and nutrients from their hosts to zooplankton. This study suggests that parasitic fungi alter trophic relationships in freshwater ecosystems and may be the important components in shaping the community and the food-web dynamics of lakes.  相似文献

Particulate material recovered over an 18-month period from sediment traps deployed at a shallow-water nearshore Antarctic site was analysed for photosynthetic pigments, aliphatic hydrocarbons and fatty acids. All components showed a distinct seasonal variation, with high recovery rates during the summer open-water phytoplankton bloom and low rates under winter fast ice. The amount of trapped material differed between the two summers, indicating inter-annual variability of vertical flux associated with differences in the intensity of the summer phytoplankton bloom. Particulate material trapped in summer was dominated by that which originated in diatoms. High recoveries of chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, n-C21:6 hydrocarbon, 20:5(n-3) fatty acid and shorter chain (C15–C24) aliphatic hydrocarbons all pointed to a significant summer flux of ungrazed diatoms. There were, however, also signals of zooplankton grazing activity (notably pyrophaeophorbide a), and the presence of C18:4(n-3) and C22:6(n-3) fatty acids suggested a small flux of material from flagellates and other sources. Longer chain n-alkanes (C25–C34) indicative of nanoplankton were detected all year, but there was no significant deposition of zooplankton material in any sample. The major recovery rate of photosynthetic pigments was in late summer (February to April), and the major grazing signal occurred after the peak of the summer diatom bloom. Most of the diatom bloom appeared to settle out from the water column without being grazed. The major seasonal contrast in the biochemistry of the trapped material was the dominance of the diatom signature in summer, and in winter the predominance (but at much lower recovery rates) of material from nanoplankton. The fatty acid compositions of phytoplankton and major primary consumers were analyzed during the development of seasonal algal blooms in the Bahía Blanca estuary, situated on the southern coast of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Trinity Bay, at Sunnyside, on the eastern coast of Newfoundland (Canada). Primary consumers in the Bahía Blanca estuary were zooplankton dominated by the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa. At Sunnyside, the primary consumers were the sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus, an ecological and economical important benthic bivalve. The study shows that in spite of obvious differences between the two environments and the analytical approaches employed in each case, the analyses of fatty acid biomarkers can provide relevant ecological information. The fatty acid composition of the lipids of Bahía Blanca phytoplankton (high concentrations of the fatty acids 14:0, 16:4ω1, and 20:5ω3) reflected the presence of diatoms as a major component throughout the bloom. Fatty acid markers of the post-bloom phytoplankton in Bahía Blanca indicated a decline of phytoplankton biomass, and a relatively high input of detritus and terrestrial plant materials to the particulate organic matter of the estuary. Linoleic acid (18:2ω6), a typical “terrestrial” fatty acid, was conspicuous in the lipids of the post-bloom particulate matter of the Bahía Blanca estuary; 18:2ω2 was subsequently incorporated into zooplankton lipids diatom markers were also prominent in the lipids of pre-bloom and bloom phytoplankton at Sunnyside; post-bloom phytoplankton showed higher proportions of 18:0, 18:1ω9, and 18:4ω3, characteristic and often major fatty acids of dinoflagellates. The fatty acids of the digestive gland of P. magellanicus reflected the fatty acid composition of the phytoplankton, whereas those of the adductor muscle were practically unaffected by the composition of the food. This organ-specific response of an animal to the fatty acid composition of the diet is examined in terms of different applications of the fatty acid marker concept.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) of herbivorous zooplankton is a widespread behavioural phenomenon in freshwater ecosystems. So far only little attention has been paid to the impact of DVM on the phytoplankton community in the epilimnion. Some theoretical models predict that algal population growth in the epilimnion should depend on the herbivores migration and grazing patterns: even if migrating zooplankton consume the same total amount of algae per day in the epilimnion as non-migrating zooplankton, nocturnal grazing should result in enhanced algal growth and favour algal species with high intrinsic growth rates over species with lower intrinsic growth rates. To test these hypotheses we performed experiments in which several algal species were confronted with different feeding regimes of Daphnia. In the experiments algal growth did not only depend on the absolute time of grazing but was comparatively higher when grazing took place only during the night, even when the grazing pressure was the same. Furthermore, algal species with higher intrinsic growth rates had higher advantages when being grazed upon only discontinuously during the night than algal species with a smaller intrinsic growth rate. The grazing pattern itself was an important factor for relative algal performance.  相似文献

Zooplankton appeared to be the major contributor to the diet of 1+ silver carp, whereas 3+ fishes exhibited a more evenly balanced spectrum between zooplankton and phytoplankton. The fatty acids profiles of digesta were influenced by zooplankton, particularly for 1+ silver carp. Together, fatty acid profiles of tank zooplankton and digesta were characterized by high proportion of 20 : 5ω3 and 20 : 6ω3. The fatty acids composition of the phytoplankton reflected the dominance of cyanobacteria and chlorophycea, with high quantities of 18 : 2ω6 and 18 : 3ω3. Although cyanobacteria accounted for >70% of the phytoplankton biomass ingested by the carp, fatty acids profiles of digesta were not influenced by phytoplankton fatty acids composition. The low digestive and conversion efficiency of Microcystis aeruginosa explain this absence of relation. The neutral lipids in silver carp tissues reflected poorly the fatty acids profiles in the diet, the semi-natural conditions and the diet dominated throughout the study by zooplankton, led to little variation in tissues fatty acids. The phospholipids in the muscle, liver and peri-intestinal fat were characterized by a rather low proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in both 1+ and 3+ fish. From a qualitative view point, cryptophycea, diatoms, and especially zooplankton are much more valuable food for the silver carp than cyanobacteria and desmid chlorophycea which are poor in long-chain PUFA.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of pelagic mysids (Mysis mixta and M. relicta) on the biomass and size-structure of the phytoplankton community during the period following the spring bloom. Mysids excreted phosphate (4.5 ± 0.7 nmol ind−1 h−1) and ammonium (123.6 ± 31.6 and 45.0 ± 3.2 nmol ind−1 h−1) and increased the total chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton slightly. However, the presence of mysids affected different size-classes of phytoplankton differently. Mysids mainly grazed on large-sized (>10 μm) phytoplankton cells. Small-sized (<10 μm) algal cells avoided grazing, gained a competitive advantage and were able to utilize the nutrients excreted by mysids. According to this study, both top-down and bottom-up mechanisms simultaneously mould the structure of the phytoplankton community. A large zooplankton biomass might promote the increase of small flagellates by a combination of repleting nutrient stores, selective grazing on large algal cells and heavy predation on protozoa which, consequently, might have a cascading effect on the most favoured protozoan food source, small flagellates.

1. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are almost exclusively synthesized by plants. Animals can convert from one form of PUFA to another through elongation and desaturation, but very few can synthesize PUFA de novo. PUFA play an important role in regulating cell membrane properties, serve as precursors for important animal hormones and are essential for animals. 2. In aquaculture studies, highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), a subset of PUFA, have been found to be critical for maintaining high growth, survival and reproductive rates and high food conversion efficiencies for a wide variety of marine and freshwater organisms. 3. The plankton literature suggests high food-quality algae species are rich in HUFA and low food-quality algae are poor in HUFA. Adding semi-pure emulsions of HUFA to algae monocultures can markedly increase the growth rates of zooplankton feeding on these mixtures. 4. A study measuring zooplankton biomass accrual when feeding on natural phytoplankton found a strong correlation between phytoplankton HUFA (specifically eicosapentaenoic acid) content and herbivorous zooplankton production. 5. The aquatic ecology literature suggests that planktonic foodwebs with high HUFA content phytoplankton have high zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratios, while systems with low HUFA phytoplankton have low zooplankton biomass. Also, the seasonal succession of plankton in many temperate lakes follows patterns tied to phytoplankton HUFA content, with intense zooplankton grazing and ‘clear-water-phases’ characteristic of periods when the phytoplankton is dominated by HUFA-rich species. 6. Herbivorous zooplankton production is constrained by the zooplankton’s ability to ingest and digest phytoplankton. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that much of the phytoplankton which is assimilated may be nutritionally inadequate. HUFA may be key nutritional constituents of zooplankton diets, and may determine energetic efficiency across the plant–animal interface, secondary production and the strength of trophic coupling in aquatic pelagic foodwebs.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments we tested the hypothesis that nutrients supplied by fish and zooplankton affect the structure and dynamics of phytoplankton communities. As expected from their body size differences, fish released nutrients at lower mass-specific rates than Daphnia. On average, these consumers released nutrients at similar N:P ratios, although the ratios released by Daphnia were more variable than those released by fish. Nutrient supply by both fish and Daphnia reduced species richness and diversity of phytoplankton communities and increased algal biomass and dominance. However, nutrient recycling by fish supported a more diverse phytoplankton community than nutrient recycling by Daphnia. We conclude that nutrient recycling by zooplankton and fish have different effects on phytoplankton community structure due to differences in the quality of nutrients released. The quantitative and qualitative relationships between the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations were examined for one year in an inshore environment (Elefsis Bay) of the Aegean Sea. It was found that quantitative relationships among these populations were influenced by the trophic level of the environment and their stocks were significantly correlated only in non-polluted conditions. The quantitative relationship between the principal grazers in the zooplankton population (Acartia clausi, Oithona nana) and the phytoplankton dominant species Exuviaella baltica, upon which these copepods were believed to graze preferentially, was tested and the results were discussed.  相似文献

Identification and quantification of the main fatty acids inphytoplankton, zooplankton and Engraulis encrasicolus larvaewere used to study the relationship among the different trophiclevels. Three northwestern Mediterranean sea areas were studiedas representative of potentially heterogeneous environments.HPLC pigment analysis was performed to assess the contributionof different phytoplankton groups to total chlorophyll biomass.In spite of the physical variability, a homogeneous patternin phytoplankton composition among areas was found, with thePrymnesiophyceae representing more than half of the phytoplanktonchlorophyll biomass. This homogeneous spatial pattern was alsoreflected in the phytoplankton fatty acid proportions. Thus,significant amount of 14:0, 18:1(n-9) and 18:4(n-3) could berelated to the dominance of the prymnesiophytes; the low proportionof fatty acid markers of diatoms and dinoflagellates agreedwith the low abundances of those phytoplankton groups. Zooplanktonfatty acids also showed homogeneous proportions in the studiedareas, with a preferential accumulation of 16:1(n-7) and 20:5(n-3),and 22:6(n-3). This observation may indicate a preferentialgrazing on diatoms and dinoflagellates. Anchovy larvae displayeddiffering fatty acids contributions related to size. Large larvaecontained a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA). Small larvae showed a high percentage of 18:1(n-9) and18:4(n-3) fatty acids, considered Prymnesiophyceae biomarkers.These results suggest an additional food resource for the anchovythat is complementary to a zooplankton diet, but probably ofprotozoan origin (i.e. microzooplankton). Significant logarithmicrelationships were found between dry mass and 20:5(n-3) and22:6(n-3) fatty acid proportions in E. encrasicolus larvae.These PUFA are considered essential for the fish-larvae development.  相似文献

To propose a concept of their mutual diversity, twenty-nine permanent shallow floodplain pools and oxbows in the river Lužnice floodplain were analysed for area, depth, shape, flooding, and shading by terrestrial vegetation, and sampled in all seasons for their water chemistry, phytoplankton composition and biomass, and zooplankton composition. The sites are regularly flooded, eutrophic, and often shaded by surrounding vegetation. Cryptophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Euglenophyceae dominated the phytoplankton, while Cyanophytes were rare. Within the rich zooplankton assemblage (63 species), cladocerans and rotifers dominated. Correlation matrices and multivariate analyses indicated that shaded and relatively deeper sites had lower oxygen saturation and higher concentrations of PO4–P and NH4–N. Shade and relative depth correlated negatively with phytoplankton biomass and number of phytoplankton taxa, and positively with Cryptophytes and large cladocerans—thus indicating poor mixing, poor light availability and low fish pressure on herbivores. Decomposition of leaf litter increased oxygen consumption, while shade from terrestrial vegetation restricted photosynthesis and decreased oxygen production. Larger sites were more species-rich in phytoplankton and supported Euglenophyceae, green algae and rotifers.  相似文献

1. Thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation of cellular lipids, by means of Curie‐point pyrolysis of intact whole cells in the presence of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide reagent, provided analytical access (pyrolysis‐gas chromatography; Py‐GC) to the very small amounts of algal carbon delivered by fluorescence‐activated cell sorting. Based on differences in pigment composition, population‐specific in situ fatty acid profiles could be obtained of the major taxa present in the phytoplankton of Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands). 2. By combining Py‐GC and compound‐specific isotope‐ratio mass spectrometry (Py‐GC‐IRMS) the in situ carbon isotopic signatures could be established of the fatty acid profiles retrieved by flow cytometry. Colonial phytoplankton not amenable to cell sorting and zooplankton specimens were also isotopically characterised with this technique by subjecting handpicked samples to pyrolytic methylation. In this way proxies could be obtained in great detail for isotopic end‐members delineating important carbon sources and sinks in the pelagic food web of Lake Loosdrecht. 3. These analyses suggested a significant isotopic heterogeneity among major representatives of the phytoplankton in Lake Loosdrecht. This heterogeneity was also reflected in the isotopic composition of the zooplankton, implying the occurrence of preferential grazing. A differential labelling of the phytoplankton using 13C‐CO2 in a laboratory confinement, and subsequent monitoring of label transfer to the zooplankton, corroborated selective feeding in some rotifer species. The large‐bodied rotifer Asplanchna, previously thought to be predaceous, apparently mainly fed on algae rather than small rotifers, whereas Euchlanis dilatata actively selected filamentous cyanobacteria. Flow cytometric cell sorting in concert with Py‐GC‐IRMS offers new possibilities in carbon isotope‐based food web studies.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod Temora longicornis occurs year-round inthe southern North Sea. Owing to its limited ability to storeenergy, this species relies on a constant food supply. Thus,when the phytoplankton stock as the primary food source is lowin winter and early spring, T. longicornis needs to utilizeother food items. In this study, the feeding strategy of T.longicornis females is elucidated using a broad methodologicalapproach. From March to May 2005 we conducted weekly grazingexperiments using natural plankton (<70 µm) as foodsource. In addition, gut contents, stable isotopes (15N, 13C)and fatty acid composition of the females were analysed, aswas the natural plankton composition. Our data suggest thatfemales were omnivorous during late winter and early spring,switching to a more herbivorous feeding mode with increasingphytoplankton stock in spring. The 15N values in March/Aprilare the highest reported so far for this species, and we suggestthat they mirror the copepods' trophic level throughout ontogenesisrather than reflecting the feeding history of only the females.T. longicornis adjusted its feeding mode to ambient food conditions,utilizing a broad range of food sources. Experiments, however,revealed strong selection for cells >12.5 µm. Feedingon dinoflagellates was generally intense; diatoms were ingestedmainly in March. Thus, the grazing impact of T. longicorniscan be substantial on those taxa, which are selected for.  相似文献
