In the present study, the serum and hair levels of zinc, selenium, and copper were determined in children with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). A total of 52 anemic children aged 1–4 yr constituted the study group. Fortysix healthy children acted as controls. The copper and zinc levels were measured with an atomic absorption spectrophometer. Serum and hair selenium was determined by a spectroflourometric method. The serum zinc and selenium concentrations in the IDA group were found to be significantly lower and serum copper significantly higher than those in the controls (p<0.05). Lower iron, zinc, and selenium concentrations (p<0.001) but not copper were found in hair (p>0.05).  相似文献

The levels of seven trace elements such as copper, iron, zinc, selenium, cadmium, chromium, and nickel were determined by graphite furnace-atomic absorption spectrometry in the cervical mucus of 45 women residing in Taiwan, Republic of China. These women were in good health and had no precancerous or cancerous lesions on their cervix. The women were separated into four age groups to establish if there was a relationship between the age of the subjects and the values of these elements in the cervical mucus. By one-way analysis of variance, significant differences in the selenium and nickel concentrations were found among the four age groups (p<0.05). The mean concentration of selenium in each age group was significantly higher for the older women. A significant correlation between age and selenium concentration was found by linear regression (r=0.23, p=0.00048). No significant differences among the concentrations of copper, iron, zinc, cadmium, and chromium were found among these four age groups (p>0.05). The results presented in this work may be considered as baseline values for these elements in the cervical mucus of healthy Taiwanese women for use as reference in studies on cervical diseases and tissue damage.  相似文献

The intestinal parasites are noted to be an important health problem in Turkey as similarly reported in the globe. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in total content of essential elements, namely, zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium, in children infected with intestinal parasites aged between 6 and 12 years inhabiting in Hatay Province, Turkey. These essential elements were measured in the children/patient who was positive for intestinal parasites, Giardia intestinalis and Enterobius vermicularis. Scores were obtained from the positive study group (SG), and their age matched the healthy children control group (CG). Serological levels of zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium were analyzed by Varian Liberty Series II inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). The mean magnesium concentrations were found to be statistically different at 95% confidence interval level between study groups. As a result of this study, selenium was found to be uncorrelated with all other elements examined; whereas, copper was observed to have statistically significant correlations with cobalt, magnesium, and zinc. In addition, cobalt-magnesium, cobalt-zinc, and magnesium-zinc metal pairs were found to have statistically significant correlations based on study findings.  相似文献

Phenylketonuria is an inherited disorder of metabolism of the amino acid phenylalanine caused by a deficit of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. It is treated with a low-protein diet containing a low content of phenylalanine to prevent mental affection of the patient. Because of the restricted intake of high-biologic-value protein, patients with phenylketonuria may have lower than normal serum concentrations of pre-albumin, selenium, zinc and iron. The objective of the present study was to assess the compliance of our phenylketonuric (PKU) and hyperphenylalaninemic (HPA) patients; to determine the concentration of serum pre-albumin, selenium, zinc and iron to discover the potential correlation between the amount of proteins in food and their metabolic control. We studied 174 patients of which 113 were children (age 1–18), 60 with PKU and 53 with HPA and 61 were adults (age 18–42), 51 with PKU and 10 with HPA. We did not prove a statistically significant difference in the concentration of serum pre-albumin, zinc and iron among the respective groups. We proved statistically significant difference in serum selenium concentrations of adult PKU and HPA patients (p?=?0.006; Mann–Whitney U test). These results suggest that controlled low-protein diet in phenylketonuria and hyperphenylalaninemia may cause serum selenium deficiency in adult patients.  相似文献

Influence of chosen elements on the dynamics of the cariogenic process   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This prospective study comprised 140 natural crowns of the teeth extracted from 31 boys and 35 men, as well as 39 girls and 35 women. They were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of primary teeth and group II consisted of permanent teeth. In each group, two subgroups were distinguished: subgroup A containing teeth without caries and subgroup B comprising carietic teeth. Zinc, iron, copper, nickel, chromium, cobalt, lead, cadmium, selenium, and strontium were determined in the samples by using the total reflection X-ray fluorescence method. Significantly higher concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, nickel, selenium, and strontium were detected in the crowns of healthy primary and permanent teeth than in the crowns of the carietic primary and permanent teeth. The concentrations of chromium, cobalt, lead, and cadmium were significantly higher in primary and permanent teeth with caries than in the healthy ones. Judging from the obtained results, we think that lower concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, nickel, selenium, and strontium together with higher concentrations of chromium, cobalt, lead, and cadmium in the carietic primary and permanent teeth, in relation with the respective concentrations of those elements in healthy teeth, can be one of the caries risk factors.  相似文献

Viral hepatic diseases, especially those induced by the hepatitis B virus, can progress into more serious pathological outcomes and eventually to hepatocellular carcinoma. A growing body of evidence indicates that many trace elements play important roles in a number of carcinogenic processes that proceed through various mechanisms. To examine the status of trace elements during the development of hepatic carcinoma, we determined the selenium, iron, copper, and zinc levels and copper-to-zinc ratios in the serum of patients at different stages of viral hepatic disease. We observed significant changes in the selenium, iron copper, and zinc levels in the serum of patients having hepatocellular carcinoma, relative to those of healthy controls (p<0.05). The mean serum copper level in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly higher than that of the control group. In contrast, the mean selenium, iron, and zinc levels in patients having hepatocellular carcinoma were significantly lower than those of the control group. In addition, the mean zinc level in the serum of patients with hepatic cirrhosis was significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05). Moreover, we found markedly elevated Cu: Zn ratios (p<0.05) in patients having hepatic cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Our findings imply that the levels of some trace elements, such as selenium, iron, copper, and zinc, and Cu:Zn ratios, might serve as biomarkers for the increased severity of viral hepatic damage.  相似文献

Plasma zinc, copper, and parameters of growth were measured in a group of 116 French preschool children, 2–5 yr-old from low-income households. Participants were selected on the basis of Z-scores of weight for height (WHZ) and height for age (HAZ). Zinc and copper concentrations of children with growth impairment (GI), defined by a WHZ and/or HAZ< −1 Z-score, were compared to those of age, sex, and ethnic origin matched controls (WHZ and HAZ >−1 Z-score). Mean (±SD) plasma zinc concentration was 12.58±1.84 μmol/L in the GI group, and 13.27±1.98 μmol/L in the controls. The difference of the means of paired samples was 0.69±2.34, and by pairedt-test the significance reachedp=0.028. This effect was primarily a result of the weight retarded group (WHZ <−1 Z-score,p<0.009) and to the girls (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in plasma copper concentrations between groups. These results suggest the presence of marginal zinc deficiency in French preschool children with low weight for height Z-scores.  相似文献

Concentrations of sodium, chlorine, potassium, chromium, iron, cobalt, zinc, rubidium, silver, caesium, and selenium in cerebrospinal fluid from 14 control subjects and 20 patients with motor neurone disease were measured by in vitro neutron activation analysis. No statistically significant correlation was found between the concentrations of any two elements other than sodium and chlorine in either the patient or control group (r = 0.9905; p less than 0.001). The mean cobalt concentration was significantly lower in the patients (p = 0.0015). No other statistically significant difference was shown. The relevance of this finding was examined in relation to current concepts of the pathogenesis of motor neurone disease and the role of cobalt in cellular metabolism.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to explore more trace elements (zinc, potassium, copper, iron, boron, manganese, selenium, chromium and cadmium elements) in addition to calcium, magnesium, lead and arsenic in the sera of patients with schizophrenia and the general population in China and to determine the effect of selenium on schizophrenia patients. Participants were collected from the Pingyin County Mental Health Hospital and Pingyin County. A t test was used to analyse the differences between schizophrenia patients and healthy subjects, and element content differences in gender. Logistic multivariate regression analysis was applied to analyse the influence of elements to schizophrenia. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyse differences in the elements after 1 and 3 months. Mn, Se, Cd, Pb, Ca, Cu and Fe were lower than those in the normal group, and B, Cr, As, K and Mg were higher than those in the control group. The odd ratios (ORs) of serum As and serum K were 2.624 and 1.035, respectively. The ORs of sera Cr, Mn, Se, Ca and Cu were all below one. After intervention of ‘selenium weikang’ about 1 and 3 months, the serum As was decreased and the serum selenium and copper were increased. Cr, Mn, Se, Ca and Cu might have beneficial, statistically significant effects on schizophrenia. Elements As and K might be harmful to schizophrenia with statistical significance. After selenium supplementation, the schizophrenia patients improved in some factors, like the appetite and memory, and the As element decreased.  相似文献

Plasma selenium status in children with iron deficiency anemia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Iron and selenium are trace elements necessary for the maintenance of life and health. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency among children in the world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate plasma selenium concentrations in children with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Plasma selenium levels were investigated in 56 children with IDA and in 48 control subjects aged 1-8 years. A spectrofluorometric method was used for the determination. Plasma selenium concentrations in children with IDA (33.6+/-8.2 microg/l) were significantly lower than in the control group (56.0+/-17.0 microg/l) (p<0.001). However, there was no relation between plasma selenium, iron and hemoglobin concentrations.  相似文献

Trace element disturbance is often observed in hemodialysis patients. While trace element concentrations have been reported in blood samples from hemodialysis patients, they have not been well investigated in scalp hair. In the present study, 22 trace elemental concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry in the scalp hair of 80 male hemodialysis patients and compared with those of 100 healthy male subjects. In hemodialysis patients, the concentrations of beryllium, arsenic, magnesium, chromium, manganese, iron, selenium, molybdenum, iodine, vanadium, and cobalt were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects, while lead, mercury, copper, germanium, and bromine were significantly lower than those in the former group. No significant differences were observed for lithium, aluminum, cadmium, zinc, boron, or nickel. There were significant positive correlations between the duration of hemodialysis and the magnesium and manganese concentrations. There was a significant negative correlation between cadmium concentration and the duration of hemodialysis. There were significant positive correlations between dialysis efficacy (Kt/V) and magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium concentrations. In conclusion, trace element concentrations of the scalp hair are different between hemodialysis patients and healthy subjects. Essential trace elements, such as magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium, may be affected by the duration of hemodialysis and Kt/V.  相似文献

Significantly more information about trace element status can be obtained by investigating concentrations in blood cells instead of only evaluating the concentrations in plasma. This can be explained by the fact that essential trace elements such as zinc, copper, chromium and selenium take part in a variety of enzymatic processes on a molecular cellular level. Ignoring these important biochemical roles, trace element concentrations determined in whole blood or plasma very often lead to conclusions contrary to the actual intracellular concentration. Especially in metabolic diseases like diabetes mellitus, conclusions drawn from trace element concentrations in blood cells usually offer more valuable clinical information about the metabolic state than trace element concentrations in plasma or whole blood. In the present investigation copper and zinc concentrations were increased in all blood fractions of diabetic patients (IDDM). In insulin-dependent diabetic children significantly higher values of zinc in erythrocytes were also found, and they were higher in patients with poor metabolic control (HbA1c>9%). When different blood fractions in diabetic patients (NIDDM) were compared with a control group, chromium was significantly increased in plasma and polymorphonuclear cells. Patients with IDDM had pronounced decreased selenium concentrations in erythrocytes as compared to controls.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of one year of supplementation with iron plus zinc (12 mg/day of Fe+++ and 12.5 mg/day of Zn++), zinc alone (12.5 mg/day of Zn++) and placebo on growth and on the iron, zinc, copper and selenium tissue contents in 30 well-selected children of short stature (16 M and 14 F; 4-11 years old). Before and after supplementation, we measured the concentrations of iron, transferrin, ferritin, zinc and copper in serum, of zinc in erythrocytes and leukocytes, and of zinc, copper and selenium in hair, as well as glutathione peroxidase activity in erythrocytes. Before supplementation, ferritin and serum, erythrocyte and hair zinc contents were significantly lower than in age-matched controls, while the other measured indices were in the normal range. Iron plus zinc supplementation caused an improvement in growth rate in all subjects, i.e., the median Z-score increased from -2.22 +/- 0.45 to -0.64 +/- 0.55; (p < 0.01). In the zinc-supplemented group, only the subjects whose ferritin levels were higher than 20 ng/L before supplementation showed a similar improvement of growth rate. Iron plus zinc supplementation could be a reasonable treatment in short, prepubertal children affected by marginal zinc and iron deficiency.  相似文献

This study was aimed at assessing the serum levels of vitamin A, copper, zinc, selenium, and iron among adult Vietnamese with and without iron-deficiency anemia. Blood was collected from adult Vietnamese living in the midland of northern Vietnam. One hundred twenty-three subjects in the age range 20–60 yr were included in the study. Anemia, where the concentration of hemoglobin in whole blood is less than 120 g/L in females and 130 g/L in males, was found in 30% (37/123) of the study population. The levels of vitamin A and selenium in the sera of anemic subjects (n=37) were significantly lower than that in nonanemic group (n=86). On the other hand, no significant differences were observed in the concentrations of copper and zinc between the two groups. This study was the first to show serum levels of trace elements in adult Vietnamese, providing useful baseline information for further studies.  相似文献

The lead, copper, zinc, and magnesium levels of scalp hair taken from 153 children aged 1–15 yr and young people (16–18 yr) with selected neurological disorders (hyperexcibility, loss of consciousness, and epileptiform convulsions of an unknown origin, etc.), were measured using the atomic absorption spectrometry method and then compared with a control group of healthy children (n=108). The research indicated significantly reduced mean levels of magnesium in the hair of children suffering from selected neurological diseases (in children aged 11–15 yr of age, above 30%; up to 5 yr of age, nearly 30%; the differences were statistically significant at p<0.05) and slightly decreased mean levels of copper (differences statistically significant at p<0.05, particularly in the 11 to 15-yr category). Differences in zinc levels in hair were inconsiderable (not statistically significant in any age groups). The lead level in the hair of the above-mentioned group of children was exceeded in relation to the control group (a statistically significant difference at p<0.05 for the total group). A more than twofold decrease in the mean value of the Mg/Pb ratio (and a nearly 30% decrease in the value of the Mg/Zn ratio) in the hair of children suffering from neurological diseases suggests that the high toxicity of lead accompanying, among other things, magnesium deficiencies might be a cause of the observed disorders in children.  相似文献

Context: Complementary alternative medicine therapies based on the use of cesium chloride preparations for the treatment of cancer and radiation poisoning, have generated therapeutic interest; but oral or intravenous administration of cesium chloride (CsCl) to cancer patients as an alternative mode of cancer therapy have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Objective: Cesium (Cs) levels from human tissue were measured to determine exposure to an alternative medical treatment. Cesium levels are reported from two patients who were administered cesium chloride in conjunction with aloe vera as part of an alternative cancer treatment. Design: The samples were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction. As a reference, Cs was also determined in brain, liver, kidney, and whole blood from control case materials retrieved from the National Tissue Repository of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Results: High levels of cesium were found in brain, liver, kidney, bile, gastric content, and whole blood collected at autopsy as compared to reference levels. The administration of cesium chloride resulted in blood levels a factor of 1100 higher than normal. The highest Cs concentrations were found in the liver (1029 μg/g, dry wt), followed by the kidney (815 μg/g, dry wt) and brain (219 μg/g, dry wt). Conclusion: The high accumulation in the liver suggests that hepatotoxicity from Cs might be an initial presenting symptom in Cs-poisoning cases. This is the first report describing two cases with high Cs levels in human tissues. The combined effects of vitamin E and selenium were studied in native Anatolian horses subject to strenuous exercise. The concentrations of copper, zinc, iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium were determined in serum by atomic absorption spectrometry in two study groups (n = 25 each), one of which served as untreated controls. After exercising the horses by running 1,500 m in about 7 min, only the copper level and the copper/zinc ratio significantly increased (p < 0.05), but the concentrations of calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium remained unchanged. In horses treated with vitamin E and selenium, the calcium and potassium levels decreased to levels lower than those of untreated controls before and after exercise. The iron levels were not changed by exercise or treatment alone but increased when the horses had been supplemented and exercised. The copper level and the copper/zinc ration increased as a result of exercise in both treated and untreated horses. These changes suggest that supplementation with vitamin E and selenium had an important effect on the serum concentrations of calcium, potassium, copper, iron, and the copper/zinc ratio.  相似文献

Plasma selenium (Se) concentration and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx) were assessed in a population of healthy preschool children two to five years old, residing in the city of Paris. In the 118 subjects, mean (±SD) plasma Se concentration was 62.10 ±13.96 μg/L, and mean GPx activity was 23.58±8.52 U/g Hb. Mean plasma Se of male children was significantly (p=0.001) higher (12%) than levels of girls. Plasma selenium levels were not correlated with erythrocyte GPx activity. Children from Mediterranean origin had a slightly lower erythrocyte GPx activity (p<0.05) than children from other regions. Mean plasma Se concentration of this group corresponded to the lower limit of intervals, which characterizes geographical regions of intermediate selenium concentrations.  相似文献

The lead, copper, zinc, and magnesium contents of scalp hair taken from 173 children aged 1–15 yr and young people (16–18 yr) with certain disorders of the osteomuscular articular system (osteomuscular pains of unknown origin, once described as “growing pains”) were measured, using the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method, and then compared with those of 108 normal, healthy children. The research showed increased average levels of lead (a statistically significant p<0.05 in both the overall group of children, and in those over 11 yr old), and zinc (increased in the total group, in a statistically significant way at p<0.10 only in adolescents over 15 yr old) and decreased levels of copper (although not significantly) in the hair of children suffering from “rheumatic” diseases, as compared with controls. The magnesium levels for the total group of ill children were admittedly enhanced, but in the youngest children, the levels were reduced. The values of the Mg/Pb and Mg/Zn ratios were lower (in the youngest children, 70% decrease of the Mg/Pb ratio) and Zn/Cu were higher in the group of children suffering from rheumatic diseases than in the healthy children. The difference of Mg/Pb ratio between the total controls and rheumatic subjects was statistically significant at p<0.05 and the Zn/Cu at p<0.10. The Mg/Zn ratio was not statistically significant.  相似文献
