A case of supernumerary nostril

A very rare case of supernumerary nostril is reported. This case is different from previously reported cases, because this accessory nostril was located nearer the nasal septum than the natural nostril and its opening was on the same level as the natural one. Although its cause and development are only speculative due to the small number of reported cases, a new hypothesis is proposed and discussed, since our findings are contradictory to previous literature.     

Manta rays in the Marquesas Islands: first records of Manta birostris in French Polynesia and most easterly location of Manta alfredi in the Pacific Ocean,with notes on their distribution

Based on direct observations of free‐ranging specimens, the giant manta ray Manta birostris is reported from the Marquesas Islands, the first sighting in French Polynesia. Sightings of its sister species, the reef manta ray Manta alfredi, are also reported at the most easterly location in the Pacific Ocean. Preliminary individual identification as well as notes on their distribution are also reported.

Cross-linking with dimethylsuberimidate to study thyroglobulin conformation

The present investigation demonstrates that the cross-linking agent, dimethylsuberimidate, is an usefull tool to study thyroglobulin structure. In fact, while reproducible and discrete polymerization products are obtained in strictly controlled conditions, valuable information on the native assemblage of thyroglobulin subunits and the effects of its major post-translational modification (iodination) on its structure, are reported.     

Notes on some British Barbulas

Abstract

The moss Hypnum cupressiforme var. heseleri is reported new to the British Isles and its status is discussed. Line drawings and a photographic illustration are provided. It was found growing on an apple tree on the Royal Estate, at Flitcham in West Norfolk. It differs from other species of Hypnum in its distinctive rounded-concave leaf form and julaceous branches. The habitat and ecology are broadly similar to those in the other European sites from which this moss has been reported.     

Syntheses and anti-MRSA activities of the C3 analogs of mansonone F, a potent anti-bacterial sesquiterpenoid: insights into its structural requirements for anti-MRSA activity

Syntheses and excellent anti-MRSA activities of the mansonone F analogs are reported. In addition, the minimal structural requirements for its anti-MRSA activities as well as its structure-activity relationship including the C3 substituents effects on anti-MRSA activity are also described. In particular, this study revealed that both ortho-quinone and tricyclic systems of mansonone F are essential for anti-MRSA activities.     

Marine Oligochaeta from the Koster Area, West Coast of Sweden, with Descriptions of Two New Enchytraeid Species

A total of 28 species of marine Oligochaeta (belonging to the families Naididae, Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae) are reported from eulittoral and sublittoral sediment samples taken in the Koster area on the Swedish West Coast. Lumbricillus algensis sp.n. and Grania ovitheca sp.n. are described and their morphological and taxonomical relations to other enchytraeids are discussed. L. algensis is characterized mainly by its spermathecae, which project into segment VI, and by its very large penial bulbs. G. ovitheca possesses no dorsal setae, the ventral setae being present posterior to the clitellum only, and its spermathecae consist of a narrow duct and a large egg-shaped to oval ampulla, filling most of the coelom of segment V. Four sublittoral species, Limnodriloides barnardi (Tubificidae), Lumbricillus semifuscus, Marionina sublitoralis and Grania roscoffensis (all Enchytraeidae) are reported as new to the Swedish fauna.     

Juncus planifolius (Juncaceae) in North America

Juncusplanifolius is reported for the first time from North America. Bibliographic notes on this species and its synonymy are given. Its distribution, dispersal and relationships within the genus are discussed.     

Effects of systematic peripheral group deuteration on the low-frequency resonance Raman spectra of myoglobin derivatives

Resonance Raman spectra are reported for a series of systematically deuterated analogues of myoglobin in its deoxy state as well as for its CO and O(2) adducts. Specifically, the myoglobin samples studied are those that have been reconstituted with deuterated protoheme analogues. These include the methine deuterated, protoheme-d4; analogue bearing C(2)H(3) groups at the 1, 3, 5, and 8 positions, protoheme-d12; the species bearing C(2)H(3) groups at the 1 and 3 positions only, 1,3-protoheme-d6; and the species bearing C(2)H(3) groups at the 5 and 8 positions only, 5,8-protoheme-d6. While the results are generally consistent with previously reported data for synthetic metalloporphyrin models and previous studies of labeled heme proteins, the high-quality low-frequency RR data reported here reveal several important aspects of these low-frequency modes. Of special interest is the fact that, using the two d6-protoheme analogues, it is shown that certain modes are apparently localized on particular pyrrole rings, while others are localized on different rings; i.e., several of these low-frequency modes are localized on one side of the heme.     

Optimisation of conditions of synthesis of oxidised starch from corn and amaranth for use in film-forming applications

Gum arabic is used as an encapsulating agent because of its film-forming ability. However, India has to import gum arabic for its domestic requirement. Oxidised starch has been reported as a substitute for gum arabic but no data are reported on the exact conditions of oxidation of starch or the analytical indicators for determining the suitability of the product for such a purpose. This work reports on the effect of process conditions for oxidation of corn and waxy amaranth starch with film-forming ability as the major criterion. The process was followed using the analytical indicators of oxidation such as carboxyl content, chlorine consumption and ferricyanide number.     

Review: heparin. 2. Effect on thrombocytes, vascular walls and fibrinolysis]

In a brief survey the impact on thrombocyte functions and thrombocyte values caused by heparin and its fractions is reported, with the acute and immuno-allergic form of heparin-induced thrombopenia being widely dealt with. Furthermore, the relationship between heparin and vessel wall, particularly then its endothelial layer, is discussed and finally, its impact on the mechanisms of fibrinolysis is reported.     

Theoretical and experimental principles and clinical aplications of the antiandrognes (author's transl)

It is reported the accumulated experience over the last ten years on a synthetic gestegen with a powerful antiandrogenic action: the cyproterone acetate. The effects on androgen dependent processes like: structure and function of genital accesory glands, on skin and sebaceous glands, bone maturation and growth, libido and testicular function are reported, together with the clinical results obtained in the treatment of acne, hirsutism, sexual perversions and as male anticonceptive. The influence of cyproterone acetate on the androgen dependent embrionary processew of differentiation are also discussed as wll as the female anticonceptive action and its effects on other endocrine systems.     

The size and conformation of Artemia (brine-shrimp) ribosomal RNA free in solution.

The RNA was isolated from the large ribosomal subunits of the brine shrimp Artemia, and its conformation free in solution was studied by determining its sedimentation and diffusion coefficients. A comparison was made of the hydrodynamic radius of the ribosomal subunit and its isolated RNA in various buffers. The conformation of the rRNA free in solution is more extended than when it is incorporated in the ribosome. This is not only the case when the rRNA solution lacks bivalent and polyvalent cations, but even in the presence of Mg2+ and spermidine, which cause a tightening of RNA. Thus the ribosomal proteins should induce a further tightening of the rRNA during the assembly of the ribosome. In the discussion, the reported data on Escherichia coli rRNA species are presented in such a way that large discrepancies between various studied are revealed, and that they can be compared with the data reported here on the larger rRNA of an eukaryote.     

The rodent. Akodon arviculoides, Wagner, 1842 (Cricetidae)--importance in plague foci in Brazil

The occurrence of the rodent Akodon arviculoides Wagner, 1842 in the plague focus of the "Agreste" region of the State of Pernambuco and a report on its ability for survival, reproduction and development in captivity, its susceptibility to Yersinia pestis infection and the role of this rodent species in Brazilian plague foci are reported.     

A New Species of the Genus Phyllocladoxylon-Phyllocladoxylon xinqiuensis sp. nov.from the Fuxin Formation in Western Liaoning

In this paper, a new species of the genus Phyllocladoxylon on the basis of fossil woods from the Fuxin Formation in Western Liaoning province, Phyllocladoxylon xinqiuensis sp. nov., is reported and its anatomic structures are described.     

Stability,purification, and applications of bromelain: A review

Bromelain is a cysteine protease found in pineapple tissue. Because of its anti‐inflammatory and anti‐cancer activities, as well as its ability to induce apoptotic cell death, bromelain has proved useful in several therapeutic areas. The market for this protease is growing, and several studies exploring various properties of this molecule have been reported. This review aims to compile this data, and summarize the main findings on bromelain in the literature to date. The physicochemical properties and stability of bromelain under different conditions are discussed. Several studies on the purification of bromelain from crude extracts using a wide range of techniques such as liquid–liquid extractions by aqueous two‐phase system, ultrafiltration, precipitation, and chromatography, have been reported. Finally, the various applications of bromelain are presented. This review therefore covers the main properties of bromelain, aiming to provide an up‐to‐date compilation of the data reported on this enzyme. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. First record of Eurytoma schreineri Schreiner (Hym., Eurytomidae) in Greece and some observations on its phenology

Abstract:   The occurrence of Eurytoma schreineri Schreiner infesting apricots is reported for the first time in Greece. Some preliminary observations on its phenology, main morphological characters and differences from other related species are mentioned.

A simple, rapid procedure for the purification of uricase from mammalian tissue is reported. The procedure is based on the precipitation of mammalian uricase under certain dialysis conditions, and on its low solubility near neutral pH. Exceptionally high yields of homogeneous enzyme are obtained.
