A phenological-type synthesis was attempted for 10 years of limnological data of a brown-water stream of Alberta, Canada. The objectives were to predict the normal occurrence of seasonal events in the stream and to formulate indices upon which to base general stream management strategies. The stream supports a diverse chironomid fauna (109 species); and four taxa, chironomids, ostracods and the ephemeropteransLeptophlebia cupida andBaetis tricaudatus, account for 61% of the total yearly fauna by numbers. There are two obvious major seasons: a 7 month ice-free season (ca 15 April–15 November) and a 5 month winter season. Based on numerical classification of physical and chemical parameters, the ice-free season is separated into spring (April and May), summer (June, July and August) and autumn (September and October) seasons; and these four seasons can serve as the basis for describing biological seasonality. There are few detectable periodic events during the long, 5-month winter season: flow and water temperature are relatively constant and at minimum values. There are no reproductive periods for species studied; no new generations appear; drift densities are at minimum values; and for most taxa, little growth takes place in winter. Some of the important phenological events of the three ice-free seasons include: (1) a total emergence, hence reproductive, period of 6 months (April–September) for aquatic insects studied, with the largest number of taxa reproducing in late June and early July; (2) a 31/2 month period (late April–early August) when water temperatures are on the rise (log phase of total degree days curve), with maximum rate increase in May, maximum rate decrease in October, and maximum water temperature values in early August; (3) a completely green (trees and marsh grasses) watershed of less than 2 months (late June–early August); (4) a leaf-drop period of 11/2 months (September–mid October), with maximum litter-fall rate in early September; (5) maximum discharge in April; (6) minimum standing crop by numbers in April and maximum numbers in September; (7) maximum daily drift and drift densities (all taxa) in August; (8) maximum impounding effect of beaver dams in September; (9) maximum aquatic macrophyte standing crop in September; and (10) maximum ‘potential’ food resources (detritus of aquatic macrophyte and terrestrial leaf origin) in mid October.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Bulbils serve as a means of vegetative reproduction and of dispersal for many plants; this latter aspect making them analogous to seeds. However, germination of bulbils may differ considerably from seeds due to dissimilar anatomical structures and perhaps environmental cue perception. The few laboratory studies done on bulbils suggest that their germination is similar to that of seeds in the same habitats and to vegetative buds of winter-dormant plants. The present study is the first to examine how bulbil germination is controlled in nature in relation to dispersal (before vs. after winter of the same cohort) and to ambient temperatures.

Methods

Under laboratory conditions, temperature and light requirements for root and shoot emergences from bulbils of Dioscorea polystachya collected in September, 2005, February, 2006 (produced in 2005) and July, 2006 were determined. Effects of cold stratification and dry storage for releasing dormancy were tested on September and July bulbils. The phenology of dormancy release and of root and shoot emergences and the persistence of bulbils in soil were followed over time under field conditions.

Key Results

Although a low percentage of bulbils collected in July or in September produced roots, but no shoots, in the laboratory and field, these roots died within approx. 1 month. Regardless of collection date, cold stratification markedly increased root and shoot emergences. Bulbils sown outdoors in October produced roots and shoots the following March and April, respectively. The soil bulbil bank is short lived.

Conclusions

Bulbils of D. polystachya are similar to seeds of many temperate plants being mostly dormant when dispersed in summer or autumn and overcoming dormancy with cold stratification during winter. Adaptively, bulbil germination primarily occurs in spring at the beginning of a favourable period for survivorship and growth.  相似文献

Rhododendron przewalskii is an important dwarf shrub species in alpine environments of western Sichuan that offers a unique opportunity to expand current dendrochronological networks into extreme environments beyond the survival limit of trees. Our objectives in this study are to evaluate the dendroclimatological potentials of R. przewalskii and determine the major limiting climate factor for the species’ growth rings. We sampled 25 cross-sections of R. przewalskii at an elevation of 4050 m, about 150 m above treeline, on Zhegu Mountain of Miyaluo in western Sichuan of southeastern Tibetan Plateau. R. przewalskii has well-defined growth rings such that most stem sections could be cross-dated. The resulting 61-year long standard chronology (A.D. 1949–2009) was derived from 38 series from 19 cross-sections. Response analysis revealed that radial growth of the Zhegu Mountain R. przewalskii is significantly and negatively correlated to late winter temperature (January–February), mainly driven by maximum temperatures. This correlation indicates that colder daytime temperatures during late-winter lead to improved growth the following growing season. Minimum winter temperatures do not appear important for radial growth of this population. R. przewalskii ring widths are also strongly correlated to late-winter maximum temperatures over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau region. April maximum and July minimum temperatures are positively and significantly correlated to radial growth suggesting that warm April days and warm July nights promote current-season radial growth. In contrast, radial growth is only negatively correlated to April precipitation, indicating that wet soil conditions inhibit total radial increment. The main differences of R. przewalskii compared to tree species living at high-altitude nearby regions is that R. przewalskii has a weaker positive growth response to summer temperature and winter minimum temperature, but a much stronger negative response to winter temperature. Due to the strong climatic signal recorded in the growth curves of R. przewalskii, this dwarf shrub should be useful for climate–growth studies in alpine regions where no forests are present.  相似文献

Qatar has a dry, subtropical desert climate, with minimum annual rainfall and intensely hot and humid summers. Using indigenous grass, those adapted to local conditions have the potential to be used for fodder and can also be used for restoration or rehabilitation of degraded rangelands. Chloris virgata, Coelachyrum brevifolium and Cenchrus ciliaris bloom twice a year from April to May (summer) and September to October (winter) under the nursery condition. Therefore, it is important to understand, how seeds produced in different seasons affect the dormancy as well as germination of these species. Seeds of C. virgata, C. brevifolium and C. ciliaris, three desert grasses, were collected from the plants growing on Shahniya nursery in two different seasons, summer (May) and winter (October). The seeds collected in May (summer) were stored up to winter. However seeds collected in October (winter) were immediately used for experiment. We compared the germination potential of seeds that matured in different season at different alternating temperatures at 15/25, 20/30 and 25/35 °C. Lower temperatures correspond to the dark period, while higher temperatures reflect the light period. Seeds collected in summer season (old seeds) were heavier as compared to seeds collected in winter season (new seeds). Winter seeds of C. virgata seem to be dormant, while summer seeds, germinated well in all the tested temperature regimes. However, C. ciliaris seeds showed opposite trends.  相似文献

Plants exchange signals with other physical and biological entities in their habitat, a form of communication termed allelopathy. The underlying principles of allelopathy and secondary-metabolite production are still poorly understood, especially in desert plants. The coordination and role of secondary metabolites were examined as a cause of allelopathy in plants thriving under arid and semiarid soil conditions. Desert plant species, Origanum dayi, Artemisia sieberi and Artemisia judaica from two different sources (cultivar cuttings and wild seeds) were studied in their natural habitats. Growth rate, relative water content, osmotic potential, photochemical efficiency, volatile composition and vital factors of allelopathy were analyzed at regular intervals along four seasons with winter showing optimum soil water content and summer showing water deficit conditions. A comprehensive analysis of the volatile composition of the leaves, ambient air and soil in the biological niche of the plants under study was carried out to determine the effects of soil water conditions and sample plants on the surrounding flora. Significant morpho-physiological changes were observed across the seasons and along different soil water content. Metabolic analysis showed that water deficit was the key for driving selective metabolomic shifts. A. judaica showed the least metabolic shifts, while A. sieberi showed the highest shifts. All the species exhibited high allelopathic effects; A. judaica displayed relatively higher growth-inhibition effects, while O. dayi showed comparatively higher germination-inhibition effects in germination assays. The current study may help in understanding plant behavior, mechanisms underlying secondary-metabolite production in water deficit conditions and metabolite-physiological interrelationship with allelopathy in desert plants, and can help cull economic benefits from the produced volatiles.  相似文献

Because of their vulnerable population status, assessing exposure levels and impacts of toxins on the health status of Gulf of Mexico marine turtle populations is critical. From 2011 to 2013, two large blooms of the red tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, occurred along the west coast of Florida USA (from October 2011 to January 2012 and October 2012 to April 2013). Other than recovery of stranded individuals, it is unknown how harmful algal blooms affected the Kemp's ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys kempii) inhabiting the affected coastal waters. It is essential to gather information regarding brevetoxin exposure in these turtles to determine if it poses a threat to marine turtle health and survival. From April 2012 to May 2013, we collected blood from 13 immature Kemp's ridley turtles captured in the Pine Island Sound region of the Charlotte Harbor estuary. Nine turtles were sampled immediately after or during the red tide events (bloom group) while four turtles were sampled between the events (non-bloom group). Plasma was analyzed for total brevetoxins (reported as ng PbTx-3 eq/mL), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, total protein concentration and protein electrophoretic profiles (albumin, alpha-, beta- and gamma-globulins). Brevetoxin concentrations ranged from 7.0 to 33.8 ng PbTx-3 eq/mL. Plasma brevetoxin concentrations in the nine turtles sampled during or immediately after the red tide events were significantly higher (by 59%, P = 0.04) than turtles sampled between events. No significant correlations were observed between plasma brevetoxin concentrations and plasma proteins or SOD activity, most likely due to the small sample size; however alpha-globulins tended to increase with increasing brevetoxin concentrations in the bloom group. Smaller (carapace length and mass) bloom turtles had higher plasma brevetoxin concentrations than larger bloom turtles, possibly due to a growth dilution effect with increasing size. The research presented here improves the current understanding of potential impacts of environmental brevetoxin exposure on marine turtle health and survival.  相似文献

Planktonic foraminifera collected from a sediment trap deployed off Hainan in the northwestern South China Sea (SCS-NW) between July 2012 and April 2013 were studied to evaluate their seasonal variability and ecology as well as to infer the factors controlling their shell fluxes. The total planktonic foraminifera flux, as well as the fluxes of the dominant species (Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei), showed three distinct maxima during SW-monsoon in August 2012, the SW-NE intermonsoon in October 2012 and the NE-monsoon in December 2012–February 2013. These periods were characterized by upwelling, aerosol fallout, and intense wind mixing, respectively, from which the foraminiferal assemblages benefitted, as indicated by the close correlation between wind speed, sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll a concentration (Chl-a), δ18O of G. ruber and the shell fluxes. The correlation also suggests that temperature and food availability might have been the primary drivers of the observed changes in foraminiferal abundance. The offset between the SST deduced from flux-weighted of G. ruber δ18O and annual mean SST is only ∼0.3 °C, much lower than ∼5.2 °C between the summer and winter temperature, indicating a balanced seasonality bias in the shell flux. The linear regression between the satellite-derived sea surface temperature and G. ruber δ18O reveals the strong potential of this species, at least in the studied region, as an ecological indicator for past oceanic environments.  相似文献

Pinus palustris (longleaf pine) savannas depend on contiguous grass cover to facilitate frequent surface fires. Enhanced flowering, seed production, and germination may be linked to season of fires. We assessed the effect of month of prescribed fire (February, April, May, and July) on percentage of plants with flowering culms (FCs%), FC/area, FC/plant, seed production, and germination for five warm seasons, fall‐flowering grasses. Multivariate analysis indicated the response of flowering and fruiting to burn month varied among the grass species. The dominant species, Sporobolus junceus and Schizachyrium scoparium var. stoloniferum, had greater numbers of most flowering characteristics when burnt during April, May, and July. Aristida purpurascens had increased FC/plant after May and July burns. In contrast, Ar. mohrii had the fewest FC/plant and seeds/FC when burnt in July. Germination was greatest (26–60%) for Ar. purpurascens. Seeds collected following July burns for Ar. purpurascens and Ar. ternarius and after May burns for S. junceus were within the highest germination values recorded. Germination of Sc. scoparium var. stoloniferum was very low after February and July burns (≤5%). With Ar. mohrii, only seed collected following February (2%) and April burns (3%) germinated. April, May, and July fires increased seed production of dominant matrix grasses, thus facilitating the potential for recruitment of these species and facilitating seed collection from potential donor sites for ground‐layer restoration projects. Varying prescribed fire burn month captured variation in flowering characteristics among these grasses.  相似文献

Factors regulating excystment of a toxic dinoflagellate in the genus Alexandrium were investigated in cysts from Puget Sound, Washington State, USA. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory using cysts collected from benthic seedbeds to determine if excystment is controlled by internal or environmental factors. The results suggest that the timing of germination is not tightly controlled by an endogenous clock, though there is a suggestion of a cyclical pattern. This was explored using cysts that had been stored under cold (4 °C), anoxic conditions in the dark and then incubated for 6 weeks at constant favorable environmental conditions. Excystment occurred during all months of the year, with variable excystment success ranging from 31–90%. When cysts were isolated directly from freshly collected sediments every month and incubated at the in situ bottom water temperature, a seasonal pattern in excystment was observed that was independent of temperature. This pattern may be consistent with secondary dormancy, an externally modulated pattern that prevents excystment during periods that are not favorable for sustained vegetative growth. However, observation over more annual cycles is required and the duration of the mandatory dormancy period of these cysts must be determined before the seasonality of germination can be fully characterized in Alexandrium from Puget Sound. Both temperature and light were found to be important environmental factors regulating excystment, with the highest rates of excystment observed for the warmest temperature treatment (20 °C) and in the light.  相似文献

Tree-rings of Pinus kesiya from southern region of Manipur, Northeast India were used to develop chronologies of multiple tree-ring parameters that are: total-ring width (TRW), earlywood width (EW), latewood width (LW) and adjusted latewood (LWadj). The time span of these chronologies is 39 years (1980–2018 C.E.) and we compared their growth responses with monthly and daily climatic records. The comparison revealed a broadly consistent pattern of climate sensitivity with daily climate exhibiting higher correlation. The climate signals during pre-monsoon (March–May) were recorded in TRW and EW, whereas late-monsoon to post-monsoon climate signals were recorded in LW and LWadj. The spatial correlation analysis of tree-ring parameters and global sea surface temperature (SST) showed a positive relationship between tree growth with tropical Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean during winter (December–February) and pre-monsoon (March–May) seasons. The LW and LWadj were also correlated with peak summer monsoon (July–August) SST over the tropical Pacific Ocean. IADFs observed in EW (E-IADF) were caused by dry and warm conditions during March–April. IADFs in LW (L-IADF) occurred due to a combination of enhanced rainfall and temperature during post-monsoon (October–November) season. Evidence of stand-specific micro-climatic conditions in the formation IADFs in this species was also found. This study showed that multiple parameters of P. kesiya provides a lucid understanding of climate response on its growth and can be considered as a proxy for studying sub-seasonal changes in past environmental conditions in longer records.  相似文献

Tree core samples of larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.), spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) and pine (Pinus sibirica Du-Tour.) from the northern taiga of West Siberia were collected to assess their potential for summer temperature reconstructions in the Ob River region. Bootstrapped response functions showed that annual growth was mainly influenced by May to June temperatures in pine and by June to July temperatures in spruce and larch. Spruce and pine chronologies showed high positive correlations with previous October temperature. June–July temperatures were reconstructed based on spruce (1795–1996) and larch (1615–1999) tree ring chronologies. The pine chronology could not be used for a reliable temperature reconstruction, due to low values of explained May–June temperature variance (11–15%) but the species has a high potential to help clarify the May–June and October climatic influence on ring width observed in all three species. We explained the effect of the early vegetation period (May–July) and the differences in the temperature signals between spruce and larch tree ring chronologies with the influence of previous September and October temperature on tree growth with the warming effect of the Ob River and differences of the species’ photosynthetic possibilities and the activity of chloroplasts and bud meristem tissues.  相似文献

Pinus strobus L. plants in their third year of growth were permitted to photoassimilate 14CO2 for about 1 hour at monthly intervals between April and October, and the subsequent distribution of 14C in these plants was determined 8 hours, 1 month, 2 months or 4 months after photo-assimilation. In this way, the fate of 14CO2 photo-assimilated during different months of the growing season was observed.

In the spring, old needles played a significant role in photo-assimilating 14CO2 and exporting current photosynthate to the developing new shoots and roots. By July, the new shoot had replaced the old shoot both as the primary photo-assimilating part of the plant and as an exporter, particularly to the root.

The root received current photosynthate from the shoot throughout the entire growing season, although plant analysis only 8 hours after photo-assimilation did not always reveal this. Translocation of recent photosynthate from shoot to root was particularly high in August, September, and October.

The amounts of photo-assimilated 14C lost from the plants over a 4 month interval, principally through respiration and photorespiration, were about one-half of that absorbed during photo-assimilation, with the greatest loss occurring within the first month.

Ferrissia wautieri, a freshwater limpet, is a widely distributed species in The Netherlands. In a pond near Nijmegen samples were taken twice a month over the year to study the population size and structure of this species in relation to the water temperature. Only ancyloids were found. Production of juveniles is temperature-dependent; peak numbers occurred in July and August. Just-hatched juveniles (shell length 0.6–1.0 mm) occurred over a lengthy period in the year, but were absent in March and April. During these months the collected numbers of specimens were very low. The largest specimens were collected during March, April and May.  相似文献

Observations on phenology of some representative trees, shrubs, under-shrubs and herbs in a subalpine forest of Uttarakhand, western Himalaya were recorded. With the commencement of favorable growth season in April, occurrence of leaf fall was indicatory growth phenomenon in Quercus semecarpifolia, Q. floribunda and Abies spectabilis. However, active vegetative growth in herbaceous species starts onward April and fruit maturation and seed dehiscence are completed from mid of September to October. In general, vegetative growth and reproductive stages in majority of the studied species seems to be dependent on adequate moisture content and also flowering and fruiting in subalpine plants correlate ambient temperature.  相似文献

The climate conditions of the current and previous growing seasons have been shown to influence growth of coniferous trees in mineral soils sites. These dependencies may be different in peatlands where growth is generally more dependent on variations in soil water conditions. In the Nordic and Baltic countries, millions of hectares of peatlands and wetlands have been drained in order to enhance forest production. These drainage networks do not guarantee stable soil water conditions for the whole stand rotation. It is thus likely that precipitation in particular may have a different influence on annual growth in peatland to that in mineral soil sites. We studied the effect of precipitation and temperature on the inter-annual diameter growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Finland in drained peatland forests. The diameter growth data were limited to periods when growth response to drainage had levelled out. For comparison, growth data were also collected from adjacent mineral soil trees. The climate variables were monthly mean temperature and precipitation in a given location estimated from observations at the nearest weather stations by means of spatial smoothing. We used mixed linear models in describing the annual diameter growth of individual trees as a function of tree size and stand properties and expressed the residual variation as a function of climate parameters. The peatland and mineral soil growth variations showed different dependence on climate parameters. Peatland trees within 5 m of a ditch showed different climate responses compared to those located further away. Precipitation in July was negatively correlated with the diameter growth of peatland trees but there was no correlation with temperature. Growth of trees in mineral soils was positively correlated with March and April mean temperatures and May and June mean precipitation. The residual growth indices showed largely similar patterns in peatlands and mineral soil sites.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence and distribution of myxomycetes on different types of newly defoliated leaf litter were examined in a secondary forest in a warm temperate region of western Japan. The two types of leaf litter (deciduous trees, Prunus verecunda and Quercus variabilis, and evergreen trees, Q. glauca and Cinnamomum camphora) were incubated in trays on the forest floor. A total of 45 myxomycete species were recorded from 3021 collected samples that occurred at the July peak during the warmest and humidest season from April to November. The occurrence of species was significantly related to the changes in mean temperature and minimum temperature on both leaf types under humid conditions. Myxomycete assemblages were divided into three seasonal phases. Most of the species occurred in June–September, while a few species demonstrated characteristic distributions; i.e., Didymium melanospermum appeared in April– May and Diderma umbilicatum appeared in October– November. The respective leaf types supported the reproduction of myxomycetes with high species richness and diversity, with 34 species and H’ = 2.59 on deciduous trees and similarly 30 species and H’ = 2.49 on evergreen trees. Several species, however, exhibited a preference for either the deciduous tree or evergreen tree leaves. Thus, a mixed forest that defoliates during different two seasons yields a greater species diversity of myxomycete assemblage.  相似文献

Parietaria judaica (Urticaceae) grows abundantly in urban areas of the Mediterranean region. Its pollen is a major allergy source. We studied the species’ distribution and abundance in and around Thessaloniki (Greece), pollen production and pollen season. We also examined how urban pollution affects pollen viability. Our ultimate goal was to obtain an estimate of the species’ performance and ability to expand under different environmental conditions related to climate change. We mapped P. judaica and the other Urticaceae species. In a north- and a south-facing population, we recorded the progress of P. judaica flowering and estimated the pollen content per flower, shoot and surface unit. We concurrently assessed atmospheric circulation of Urticaceae pollen. We estimated P. judaica pollen viability and Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations in plants collected from sites differing in traffic intensity. P. judaica is the most abundant Urticaceae species in the area; its occurrence has increased dramatically over the last 100 years. Production of flowers is intense in spring and autumn. Flowering started 12 days earlier in the south-facing population in spring, and 3 days later in autumn. Pollen production was higher in spring and in the south-facing population. Flower and pollen production were positively correlated with the size of the plant and the flower, respectively. Copper and lead concentrations in plants were positively correlated with pollen viability, which was higher for plants collected from high-traffic sites. P. judaica has a high phenotypic plasticity; this is a feature that promotes success of expansive and invasive species. It is also well adapted to warm and polluted urban environments. The climatic change forecast for the Mediterranean region could provoke earlier, longer, and more pronounced flowering and, consequently, more P. judaica pollen in the air. In return, this would result in increased severity of Parietaria pollinosis.  相似文献

Leaf production and population dynamics of Zostera japonica were examined at three elevations of an intertidal transect in Seungbongdo Island on the western coast of Korea. Morphometrics, shoot density, biomass, leaf production, reproductive effort and environmental factors were monitored from October 2001 to October 2002. Z. japonica grew well in the lower intertidal zone from 0.2 to 1.0 m above mean chart datum. The upper station (St. 1) exhibited a finer sediment grain size and richer organic content than the middle (St. 2) and lower stations (St. 3). The size of shoots and leaves was significantly greater at St. 1 than at St. 3, whereas the rhizome internodes were longer at St. 3. Despite differences in morphological characteristics among three stations, seagrass biomass and shoot density were not significantly different among study sites. Shoot density, biomass, morphometrics and leaf productivity exhibited clear seasonal variations, which varied along with seasonal changes of water and air temperature. Leaf productivity measured by the clip and reharvest method was highest in September (4.3 g DW m−2 d−1) and lowest in February (0.2 g DW m−2 d−1). Reproductive shoots rapidly increased to maximum density along with the high water temperature in July to September. In the intertidal zone, Z. japonica exhibited faster vegetative growth on muddy sand than on sand, probably due to the difference in nutrient supply. The seasonal changes of water and air temperature were considered to play an important role in the seasonal leaf growth of Z. japonica.  相似文献
