Five dammarane-type triterpenoids, five pentacyclic triterpenoids (three of them carrying a carboxylic acid group), and two aromadendrane-type sesquiterpenoids were isolated from an Argentinian collection of the liverwort Lepidozia chordulifera. Compounds were characterized by comparison of their spectral data with those previously reported and tested in their ability to control bacterial growth, biofilm formation, bacterial Quorum Sensing process (QS), and elastase activity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as bacterial growth and biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus. The key role played by biofilm and elastase activity in bacterial virulence make them a potential target for the development of antibacterial agents. The aromadendrane-type sesquiterpenoid viridiflorol was the most potent biofilm formation inhibitor, producing 60% inhibition in P. aeruginosa and 40% in S. aureus at 50 µg/ml. Ursolic and betulinic acids (two of the pentacyclic triterpenoids isolated) were able to reduce 96 and 92% the elastase activity of P. aeruginosa at 50 µg/ml, respectively. Among the analyzed triterpenoids, those that carry a dammarane skeleton were the most potent inhibitors of the P. aeruginosa biofilm formation and were active against both P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. Subsequently, a computer-assisted study of the triterpenoid compounds was carried out for a better understanding of the structure-activity relationships.  相似文献

Methanol extract of the Gracilaria changii has been screened for antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antimicrobial activities were carried out using disc diffusion assay and broth dilution method against P. aeruginosa. The methanol extract of G. changii showed a good antimicrobial activity against P. aeruginosa with MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) value of 6.25 mg/ml. Exposure of P. aeruginosa cells to 6.25 mg/ml of methanol extract of G. changii resulted in complete inhibition of the bacterial cells. The main abnormalities noted via SEM and TEM studies were the alterations in morphology and cytology of the bacterial cells. The main reason for this deterioration was discussed. The effect of the methanol extract on the growth profile for the bacteria was also done and confirmed the bactericidal effect of the G. changii methanol extract on P. aeruginosa by changing the normal growth profile of P. aeruginosa. In an acute toxicity study using mice, the median lethal dose (LD50) of the extract was greater than 2000 mg/kg, and we found no pathological changes in macroscopic examination by necropsy of mice treated with extract. We conclude that G. changii might be safely used as an antimicrobial agent.  相似文献

The leaves of Dilobeia thouarsii (Roemer and Schulte), a tree that is endemic to Madagascar (Proteaceae), are used in traditional Malagasy medicine to treat bacterial skin infections and wounds. This study investigated the in vitro antibacterial activities of D. thouarsii leaf extracts and identified the bioactive compounds with the aim of providing a scientific basis for its use against skin diseases. Using broth microdilution method for leaf crude extract and its compounds, we investigated inhibition of the growth of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus megaterium, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio fisheri, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella antarctica, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The two purified phenolic compounds from leaf ethyl acetate extracts (1, 2) were found to be more active than the crude extract itself. The structure of the two compounds was elucidated by NMR and mass spectrometry: compound 1 was identified as 4-aminophenol and compound 2 as 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. A marked inhibitory effect (MIC < 0.1 mg/ml) was found against S. aureus, which is a major agent in skin infections. We observed moderate activities (MIC values of between 0.1 and 0.5 mg/ml) for E. faecalis, Vibrio spp., and Bacillus spp. Neither compound was active against Salmonella spp., E. coli and K. pneumoniae (MICs > 1 mg/ml). To conclude, the high antimicrobial activity of D. thouarsii leaf extracts against S. aureus supports its traditional use to treat skin infections.  相似文献

Candidal infections are often difficult to eradicate due to the resistance of biofilms to antifungal agents. This study aimed at determining the effects of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus DC) oil against Candida dubliniensis in both planktonic and biofilms form. The results from broth microdilution method revealed that the minimum inhibitory and minimum fungicidal concentration of lemongrass oil on C. dubliniensis were 0.43 and 0.86 mg/ml, respectively. Employing a formazan salt (XTT tetrazolium) reduction assay for biofilm study, the results showed that the average percentage (mean ± SD) inhibition of lemongrass oil (0.43 mg/ml) on biofilm formation was 91.57 ± 1.31%, while it exhibited more than 80% killing activity against C. dubliniensis in biofilm at concentrations of 1.7 mg/ml. In addition, a significant reduction (P = 0.03) of candidal adhesion to acrylic occurred after a 15 min exposure to 1.7 mg/ml of lemongrass oil. Moreover, limited exposure of yeasts to lemongrass oil at subcidal concentration can suppress growth for more than 24 h. Altogether, the results obtained indicate that lemongrass oil possessed antifungal and antibiofilm activities and could modulate candidal colonization. Therefore, the efficacy of lemongrass oil merits further development of this agent for the therapy of oral candidiasis.  相似文献

Barleria argillicola Oberm. is a critically endangered species, endemic to a small area in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Animals are known to forage on this plant species, suggesting its therapeutic or nutraceutical potential. This study investigated the antibacterial, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, antioxidant and phytochemical properties of this species with a view to exploring its medicinal potential. The possibility of in vitro propagation as a conservation strategy was also examined. Dichloromethane extract showed a good antibacterial activity (with minimum inhibitory concentration less than 1 mg/ml) against all the tested micro-organisms. Methanol extract exhibited a stronger antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa than the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Extracts obtained from the aerial parts and roots demonstrated a dose-dependent acetylcholinesterase inhibition and antioxidant activities. Higher iridoid, flavonoid and condensed tannin contents were recorded in the aerial parts compared to the roots although the total phenolic content was higher in the roots. The highest in vitro shoot proliferation of 4.60 ± 0.51 and 4.0 ± 0.47 shoots per explant was achieved using shoot-tip and single nodal explants respectively, after four weeks of culture in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 5 μM benzyladenine riboside (BAR). Further supplementation of the medium with naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) or indole butyric acid (IBA) concentrations did not significantly increase shoot proliferation.  相似文献

This study investigated the phytochemical, antioxidative, antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects of Leea indica leaf ethanol extract. Phytochemical values namely total phenolic and flavonoid contents, total antioxidant capacity, DPPH radical scavenging effect, FeCl3 reducing power, DMSO superoxide scavenging effect and Iron chelating effects were studied by established methods. Antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic effects were screened by disk diffusion technique, food poison technique and brine shrimp bioassay, respectively. Results showed the total phenolic content 24.00 ± 0.81 g GAE/100 g, total flavonoid content 194.68 ± 2.43 g quercetin/100 g and total antioxidant capacity 106.61 ± 1.84 g AA/100 g dry extract. Significant (P < 0.05) IC50 values compared to respective standards were recorded in DPPH radical scavenging (139.83 ± 1.40 μg/ml), FeCl3 reduction (16.48 ± 0.64 μg/ml), DMSO superoxide scavenging (676.08 ± 5.80 μg/ml) and Iron chelating (519.33 ± 16.96 μg/ml) methods. In antibacterial screening, the extract showed significant (P < 0.05) zone of inhibitions compared to positive controls Ampicillin and Tetracycline against Gram positive Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus megaterium, and Staphylococcus aureus and Gram negative Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Shigella dysenteriae, Vibrio cholerae, and Escherichia coli. Significant minimum inhibitory concentrations compared to tetracycline were obtained against the above organisms. In antifungal assay, the extract inhibited the growth of Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans and Fusarium equisetii by 38.09 ± 0.59, 22.58 ± 2.22, and 22.58 ± 2.22%, respectively. The extract showed a significant LC50 value compared to vincristine sulfate in cytotoxic assay. The results evidenced the potential antioxidative, antimicrobial and cytotoxic capacities of Leea inidica leaf extract to be processed for pharmaceutical use.  相似文献

Prevention of food spoilage and food poisoning pathogens is usually achieved by use of chemical preservatives which have negative impacts including: human health hazards of the chemical applications, chemical residues in food & feed chains and acquisition of microbial resistance to the used chemicals. Because of such concerns, the necessity to find a potentially effective, healthy safer and natural alternative preservatives is increased. Within these texts, Plant extracts have been used to control food poisoning diseases and preserve foodstuff. Antimicrobial activity of five plant extracts were investigated against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi using agar disc diffusion technique. Ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum, Syzygium aromaticum, Zingiber officinales and Thymus vulgaris were potentially effective with variable efficiency against the tested bacterial strains at concentration of 10 mg/ml while extract of Cuminum cyminum was only effective against S. aureus respectively. P. granatum and S. aromaticum ethanolic extracts were the most effective plant extracts and showed bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against the highly susceptible strains of food borne pathogenic bacteria (S. aureus and P. aeruginosa) with MIC's ranged from 2.5 to 5.0 mg/ml and MBC of 5.0 and 10 mg/ml except P. aeruginosa which was less sensitive and its MBC reached to 12.5 mg/ml of S. aromaticum respectively. These plant extracts which proved to be potentially effective can be used as natural alternative preventives to control food poisoning diseases and preserve food stuff avoiding healthy hazards of chemically antimicrobial agent applications.  相似文献

This work optimized the novel biotransformation process of podophyllotoxin to produce podophyllic acid by Pseudomonas aeruginosa CCTCC AB93066. Firstly, the biotransformation process was significantly affected by medium composition. 5 g/l of yeast extract and 5 g/l of peptone were favorable for podophyllic acid production (i.e. 25.3 ± 3.7 mg/l), while not beneficial for the cell growth of P. aeruginosa. This indicated that the accumulation of podophyllic acid was not corresponded well to the cell growth of P. aeruginosa. 0 g/l of sucrose was beneficial for podophyllic acid production (i.e. 34.3 ± 3.9 mg/l), which led to high podophyllotoxin conversion (i.e. 98.2 ± 0.1%). 1 g/l of NaCl was the best for podophyllic acid production (i.e. 47.6 ± 4.0 mg/l). Secondly, the production of podophyllic acid was significantly enhanced by fed-batch biotransformation. When each 100 mg/l of podophyllotoxin was added to the biotransformation system after 4, 10 and 25 h of culture, respectively, podophyllic acid concentration reached 99.9 ± 12.3 mg/l, enhanced by 284% comparing to one-time addition (i.e. 26.0 ± 2.1 mg/l). The fundamental information obtained in this study provides a simple and efficient way to produce podophyllic acid.  相似文献

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt) seed extracts were evaluated. Seeds were extracted with acetone, ethanol, methanol, butanol and water. All the extracts have shown significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against the tested microorganisms. Among all extracts, acetone extract has shown the highest antioxidant activity. The acetone extract showed 93.12 ± 1.48 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100 g dry weight total phenolic content, DPPH scavenging activity of 63.04 ± 1.56%, chelating activity of 64.11 ± 2.21% and 74.36 ± 1.94% inhibition of β-carotene bleaching, at 1 mg/mL extract concentration. Out of all extracts, acetone extract was able to exert antimicrobial activity against all tested bacteria and fungi. Acetone extract has shown the strongest antibacterial and antifungal activity with Staphylococcus aureus (13.8 ± 0.42 mm) and Aspergillus niger (14.4 ± 0.37 mm), respectively. GC–MS analysis of acetone extract has revealed the presence of 32 compounds of extract representing 99.49%. Sabinene (28.61%) has shown the highest occurrence in the extract. β-Pinene (10.26), α-pinene (9.72), myristicin (4.30%), isoeugenol (2.72%), p-cymene (1.81%), carvacrol (1.54%), eugenol (0.89%) and β-caryophellene (0.82%) were reported as possible contributor for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of nutmeg.  相似文献

Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) is a fresh water unicellular blue-green alga that has been traditionally used for over 25 years for its health-enhancing properties. Recent studies have shown the ability of a proprietary AFA extract (Klamin®) to improve mood, counteract anxiety, and enhance attention and learning. Aim of this study was to test the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition activity of the same AFA extract and of its constituents phycocyanin (AFA-PC) and mycosporine-like aminoacids (AFA-MAAs). All compounds showed a dose-dependent selective inhibition of MAO-B activity as compared to MAO-A. The IC50 values of the AFA extract (concentration 10 mg/ml), AFA-PC and AFA-MAAs were 6.4 μl/ml, 1.33 μM and 1.98 μM, respectively, evidencing a mixed-type of inhibition for the AFA extract (Ki 0.99 μl/ml), a non-competitive inhibition for AFA-PC (Ki 1.06 μM) and a competitive inhibition for AFA-MAAs (Ki 0.585 μM). These results are important to explain the neuromodulating properties of the AFA extract Klamin®, which is rich in phenylethylamine, a general neuromodulator, that would nevertheless rapidly destroyed by MAO-B enzymes without the inhibitory activity of the synergic active principles AFA-PC and AFA-MAAs. The present investigation thus proposes the extract as potentially relevant in clinical areas such as mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

Several molecules have been discovered that interfere with formation of bacterial biofilms, opening a new strategy for the development of more efficient treatments in case of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Amongst the most active compounds are some natural brominated furanones from marine algae Delisea pulchra that have proven to be able to control pathogenic biofilms. We have recently reported that some rubrolide analogues are able to inhibit biofilm formation of Enterococcus faecalis. In the present Letter we describe results of the biological evaluation of a small library of 28 compounds including brominated furanones and the corresponding lactams against biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus mutans. Our results showed that in general these compounds were more active against biofilms of S. epidermidis and P. aeruginosa, with little or no inhibition of planktonic bacterial growth. In some cases they were able to prevent biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa at concentrations as low as 0.6 μg/mL (1.3 μM, compound 3d) and 0.7 μg/mL (1.3 μM, 3f). Results also indicate that, in general, lactams are more active against biofilms than their precursors, thus designating this class of molecules as good candidates for the development of a new generation of antimicrobial drugs targeted to biofilm inhibition.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the major nosocomial pathogen that can causes a wide variety of acute and chronic infections P. aeruginosa is a dreaded bacteria not just because of the high intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance rates but also the biofilm formation and production of multiple virulence factors. We investigated the in vitro activities of antibiotics (ceftazidime, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin, doripenem, piperacillin and colistin) and antimicrobial cationic peptides (AMPs; LL-37, CAMA: cecropin(1–7)-melittin A(2–9) amide, melittin, defensin and magainin-II) alone or in combination against biofilms of laboratory strain ATCC 27853 and 4 clinical strains of P. aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum biofilm eradication concentrations (MBEC) were determined by microbroth dilution technique. The MBEC values of antibiotics and AMPs were 80–>5120 and 640–>640 mg/L, respectively. When combined with the LL-37 or CAMA at 1/10× MBEC, the MBEC values of antibiotics that active against biofilms, were decreased up to 8-fold. All of the antibiotics, and AMPs were able to inhibit the attachment of bacteria at the 1/10× MIC and biofilm formation at 1× or 1/10× MIC concentrations. Time killing curve studies showed 3-log10 killing against biofilms in 24 h with almost all studied antibiotics and AMPs. Synergism were seen in most of the studied combinations especially CAMA/LL-37 + ciprofloxacin against at least one or two strains’ biofilms. Since biofilms are not affected the antibiotics at therapeutic concentrations, using a combination of antimicrobial agents including AMPs, or inhibition of biofilm formation by blocking the attachment of bacteria to surfaces might be alternative methods to fight with biofilm associated infections.  相似文献

4-Thiazolidinones derivatives of marine bromopyrrole alkaloids were synthesized as potential antibiofilm compounds. Among the synthesized compounds, some showed promising antibiofilm activity. Biological data revealed that 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives are more potent antibiofilm agents compared to 1,3-thiazinan-4-ones. Antibiofilm activity of compound 4b, 4c (MIC = 0.78 μg/ml) was 3-fold superior than standard vancomycin (MIC = 3.125 μg/ml) while activity of compound 4d, 4f, 4g and 4h was 2-fold (MIC = 1.56 μg/ml) against Staphylococcus aureus biofilm. Compound 4b–4h showed equal antibiofilm activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis compared to standard Vancomycin (MIC = 3.125 μg/ml).  相似文献

The properties and applications of rhamnolipid surfactants produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa L2-1 from cassava wastewater added with waste cooking oil (CWO) as low-cost substrate, were investigated and compared with the commercial rhamnolipid mixture JBR599 (Jeneil Biosurfactant Co., Saukville, USA). The rhamnolipids produced by strain L2-1 were characterized by high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Sixteen different rhamnolipid congeners were detected, with Rha-C10-C10 and Rha-Rha-C10-C10 being the most abundant. The L2-1 rhamnolipids from CWO showed similar or better tensioactive properties than those from JBR599, with a minimal surface tension of 30 mN/m and a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 30 mg/l. The L2-1 biosurfactants formed stable emulsions with several hydrocarbons and showed excellent emulsification of soybean oil (100%). These rhamnolipids removed 69% of crude oil present in contaminated sand samples at the CMC and presented antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus (32 μg/ml), Micrococcus luteus (32 μg/ml) and Staphylococcus aureus (128 μg/ml). These results demonstrate that the rhamnolipids produced in CWO can be useful for industrial applications, such as the bioremediation of oil spills.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa L.) extract on the activity of porcine pancreatic α-amylase and lipase. An in vitro study demonstrated that three kinds of chokeberry extracts: methanolic, water and acetic caused inhibition of α-amylase and lipase. The methanolic and acetic extracts exhibited the highest inhibitory activities against α-amylase with the IC50 values of 10.31 ± 0.04 mg/ml and pancreatic lipase 83.45 ± 0.50 mg/ml, respectively. In order to identify the compounds which may be the potential inhibitors of α-amylase and lipase, chokeberry extract was analyzed by preparative reverse phase chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS). These studies have shown that both anthocyanins and phenolic acids are compounds which inhibit the ability of the reaction catalyzed by α-amylase and lipase. The most effective inhibitor of pancreatic α-amylase was chlorogenic acid (IC50 = 0.57 ± 0.16 mg/ml). In the group of anthocyanins the most potent inhibitor of α-amylase was cyanidin-3-glucoside (IC50 = 1.74 ± 0.04 mg/ml), which also showed an ability to inhibit the reaction catalyzed by pancreatic lipase (IC50 = 1.17 ± 0.05 mg/ml). These findings seem to indicate the use of chokeberry as a functional food component, contributing to its anti-obesity activities.  相似文献

To investigate the anti-cancer properties of soil-borne actinobacteria, MJM 8637, the glutathione S-transferase pi (GST-pi) assay, anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α assay, the level of antioxidant potential by DPPH radical scavenging activity, NO scavenging activity, and ABTS radical scavenging activity in ethyl acetate extract were determined. The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed that Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637, which was isolated from Hambak Mountain, Korea, has 99.5% similarity to Streptomyces atratus strain NBRC 3897. The physiological and the morphological characteristics of the strain MJM 8637 were also identified. The ethyl acetate extract of MJM 8637 inhibited TNF-α production approximately 61.8% at concentration 100 μg/ml. The IC50 value of the strain MJM 8637 extract on GST-pi was identified to be 120.2 ± 1.6 μg/ml. In DPPH, NO, and ABTS radical scavenging assays, the IC50 values of the strain MJM 8637 extract were found to be 977.2 μg/ml, 1143.7 μg/ml, and 454.4 μg/ml, respectively. The ethyl acetate extract of the strain MJM 8637 showed 97.2 ± 1.3% of cell viability at 100 μg/ml in RAW 264.7 cell viability assay. The results obtained from this study suggest that the ethyl acetate extract of Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637 could be considered as a potential source of drug for the cancers that have multidrug resistance with its GST-pi inhibition and anti-inflammation activities, and low cytotoxicity.  相似文献

Hydatid disease is an important economic and human public health problem with a wide geographical distribution. Surgical excision remains the primary treatment and the only hope for complete cure of hydatosis. The most important complications arising from surgical excision, however, is recurrence, which is due to dissemination of protoscolices during the surgery. Pre-surgical inactivation of the contents of the hydatid cyst by injection of scolicidal agent into the cyst has been used as adjunct to surgery in order to overcome the risk of recurrence. In the present study, ethanolic extracts of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) were tested as scolicidal agent for Echinococcus protoscoleces. Protoscoleces were collected aseptically from sheep livers containing hydatid cysts. Three concentrations (10, 30 and 50 mg/ml) of each extract were investigated and viability of the protoscoleces was tested by 0.1% eosin staining. Ginger extract showed the strongest scolicidal effect (100%) after 20 min at a concentration of 30 mg/ml and 10 min at 50 mg/ml. The maximum scolicidal effect of turmeric was 93.2% after 30 min at a concentration of 50 mg/ml. It is concluded that turmeric and ginger extracts have high scolicidal activity and could be used as effective scolicidal agents against Echinococcus protoscoleces.  相似文献

In continuation of evaluating the anti-obesity effect of Aegle marmelos, we have screened the n-hexane, dichloro methane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH) extracts of the leaves at the concentration of 25, 50, 75 and 100 μg/ml for adipogenesis inhibition in the adipocytes. Nile red staining with the help of fluorometry was used as indicator of the antiobesity activity. The most active DCM extract showed the 33.98 ± 3.55% lipid content at 100 μg/ml and was selected for the further isolation. 14 compounds were isolated from DCM extract of A. marmelos leaves. The compounds were screened for the adipogenesis inhibition at 50 and 100 μM concentrations. Out of the 14 compounds, halfordinol, ethyl ether aegeline and esculetin were showing 10.04 ± 0.52, 16.29 ± 0.85 and 25.09 ± 1.31% lipid content respectively at 100 μM. We hereby report the adipogenesis inhibition by A. marmelos as one of the pathway for its antiobesity effect.  相似文献

The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of various solvent extracts from Mirabilis jalapa tubers (MJT) were investigated using various in vitro assays. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents varied from 21.45 to 364.6 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dried extract and 5.2 to 71.6 mg quercetin/g dried extract, respectively. Water extract of MJT was the most potent antioxidant in all assays used, followed by methanol extract. The five solvent extracts were screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities. Water extract was the most effective with minimum inhibitory concentration <200 μg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus cereus and Enterococcus faecalis. Only water extract showed antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporium and Fusarium granularium. GC/MS analysis of MJT dichloromethane and methanol extracts showed that oleic acid and β-sitosterol were, respectively, the major compounds. LC/MS analysis of the aqueous extract showed a high content of flavanol and flavonol compounds. Phenolic acids such as ferulic and caffeic acid were also detected. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the chemical composition, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of phenolic extracts from M. jalapa tubers (MJT). The results of the present work indicate that MJT extracts could be used as natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents in the food preservation and human health.  相似文献

Clove bud (Syzygium aromaticum) extract was added at concentrations of 0, 35, 75, and 115 μg/ml to ovine semen extenders in order to investigate the antioxidant activities of clove bud extract and its effects on semen quality parameters after cryopreservation of ram spermatozoa. The basic extender was composed of Tris, egg yolk, and glycerol. Two other extenders were prepared by substitution of egg yolk with either LDL or egg yolk + SDS. The DPPH inhibition test was employed to assess the antioxidant activity of clove bud extract. Results showed that, compared to vitamin E, clove bud extract had a higher antioxidant activity. Better sperm motility and movement characteristics (P < 0.05) were observed in the semen diluted with medium containing egg yolk + SDS than in that containing egg yolk and LDL. Progressive motility and movement characteristics of the sperm were significantly improved (P < 0.05) by adding 35 and/or 75 μg/ml of clove bud extract to semen extenders. Sperm viability and plasma membrane integrity were also higher (P < 0.05) in the semen exposed to medium containing egg yolk + SDS and 75 μg of clove buds extract after cryopreservation processes. Higher levels of clove bud extract, however, had adverse effects on all the sperm quality parameters and significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the motility, movement parameters, viability, and plasma membrane integrity of ovine sperm. It was concluded that the clove bud extract had an antioxidant potential that makes it useful for addition to semen extenders and that the best results are obtained with a maximum clove bud extract of 75 μg/ml. Moreover, the combination of egg yolk and a detergent was found to improve sperm quality after the cooling and freeze–thawing processes.  相似文献
