This paper examines the effect of organic loading rate on the removal efficiency of COD and TOC anaerobic thermophilic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) in the treatment of cutting-oil wastewater at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) conditions. The essays are development at laboratory scale using a porous support medium. The AFBR reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention times, HRTs, in the range 12-2h and organic loading rates, OLRs, between 11.9 and 51.3kgCOD/m(3)d. The highest efficiency was 95.9% for an OLR of 13kgCOD/m(3)d and HRT of 11h. Over an operating period of 92 days, an OLR of 51.3kgCOD/m(3)d was achieved with 67.1% COD removal efficiency (71.3% TOC) in the experimental AFBR reactor. Although the level of biogas generation was not high, the anaerobic fluidized bed technology provided significant advantages over the conventional physico-chemical treatment applied in the factory. The effluent had a better quality (lower organic loading) and it was possible to reuse it in different applications in the factory (e.g., irrigation of gardens). The biological treatment did not lead to the generation of oily sludge, which is considered as hazardous waste by legislation. Furthermore, a continuous stream is produced and this reduced the impact of large flows discharged 4-5 times per week to the urban collector and MWWTP (municipal wastewater treatment plant).  相似文献

Studies were carried out on the treatment of wastewater from a bulk drug industry using an anaerobic fixed film reactor (AFFR) designed and fabricated in the laboratory. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total dissolved solids (TDS) of the wastewater were found to be very high with low biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) to COD ratio and high total suspended solid (TSS) concentration. Acclimatization of seed consortia and startup of the reactor was carried out by directly using the wastewater, which resulted in reducing the period of startup to 30 days. The reactor was studied at different organic loading rates (OLR) and it was found that the optimum OLR was 10 kg COD/m(3)/day. The wastewater under investigation, which had a considerable quantity of SS, was treated anaerobically without any pretreatment. COD and BOD of the reactor outlet wastewater were monitored and at steady state and optimum OLR 60-70% of COD and 80-90% of BOD were removed. The reactor was subjected to organic shock loads at two different OLR and the reaction could withstand the shocks and performance could be restored to normalcy at that OLR. The results obtained indicated that AFFR could be used efficiently for the treatment of wastewater from a bulk drug industry having high COD, TDS and TSS.  相似文献

The study was aimed at treating the complex, combined wastewater generated in Mangolpuri industrial cluster. It was considered as a low strength wastewater with respect to its organic content. Anaerobic treatment of this wastewater was studied using an anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) which combined the best features of both the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and anaerobic fluidized bed rector (AFBR). The performance of the reactor under different organic and hydraulic loading rates were studied. The COD removal reached 94% at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.08 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6.0 h. The granules developed were characterized in terms of their diameter and terminal settling velocity.  相似文献

The possibility of following the biomass growth by pressure drop measurement was investigated in an aerated cocurrent upflow fixed-bed bioreactor continuously fed with wastewater containing industrial organic pollutants. The experiments were carried out in a biological filtration oxygenated reactor (Biofor) pilot plant packed with expanded clay balls (Biolite) of 2.7-mm diameter, which served as biomass carriers. The column was equipped for on-line pressure drop measurements. Correlation between pressure drop measurements and Reynolds numbers of air and water were determined in experiments carried out without biomass. Under operating conditions with biomass, it was demonstrated that column clogging and the operating time between washing cycles can be predicted depending on the volumetric organic load for a given total organic carbon inlet concentration. The biological activity of the fixed biomass was estimated from the oxygen consumption rate per unit time and carrier area. The oxygen consumption rate measurements demonstrated that the biological activity depends on the inlet substrate concentration, and that the Biofor column was most efficient between 75 and 100 g m-3 of total organic carbon inlet concentration. In the course of the wastewater treatment, using pressure drop measurements, the equivalent diameter of the Biolite particles, the reduced column macroporosity, and the biofilm thickness were calculated. An expression correlating biofilm density and biofilm thickness, as determined from the pressure drop measurements, was proposed. Good agreement was found between the fixed biomass in the reactor, determined as volatile suspended solids, and the biologically active biomass, estimated by respirometry. The present study is related to treatment of textile wastewater in microaerophilic–aerobic hybrid reactor. The study showed the effectiveness of biological treatment of wastewater involving appropriate microorganism and suitable reactors. COD and color were reduced to 82–94%, and 99% respectively for textile wastewater. The reactor was operated at highest loading of 16.4 g COD g l−1 d−1 and obtained 80% COD and 72% color removal. Biokinetic models were applied to data obtained from experimental studies in continuously operated hybrid reactor. Treatment efficiencies of the reactor were investigated at different hydraulic retention times (2.3–9.1 d) and organic loading rates (2.6–16.4 g COD l−1 d−1). Second-order and a Stover–Kincannon models were best fitted to the hybrid column reactor. The second-order substrate removal rate constant (k2(S)) was found as 41.44 d−1 for hybrid reactor. Applying the modified Stover–Kincannon model to the hybrid reactor, the maximum removal rate constant (Umax) and saturation value constant (KB) were found to be 212 g l−1 d−1 and 22.89 g l−1 d−1, respectively.  相似文献

Performance and Microbial Structure of a Combined Biofilm Reactor   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A novel combined biofilm reactor was established and applied as a single treatment unit for carbon and nitrogen removal of wastewater. The nitrogen removal performance of the reactor at different levels of organic carbon (COD) loading was investigated when the influent total nitrogen (TN) loading was 0.74 g TN/m2 day. Continuous experimental results demonstrated that 80% nitrogen was eliminated when the influent COD loading ranged between 2.06 g and 3.92 g COD/m2 day. Microbial composition in the reactor was analyzed using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and conventional batch tests. The relative abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the aerobic zone of the reactor measured by FISH was consistent with the result from conventional batch tests.  相似文献

Study on biomethonization of waste water from jam industries   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from jam industries was studied in a continuous reactor with different organic loading rates (OLR) and the optimum organic loading rate was 6.5 kg COD/m(3)/day when it was operated with three days HRT. The biodegradability of wastewater in batch experiments was about 90%. The removal efficiency of total COD and soluble COD were found to 82% and 85%, respectively. The specific methane production was 0.28 m(3)/kg of COD removed/day.  相似文献

Removal of organic material from poultry slaughter wastewater as determined by changes in biological oxygen demand (BOD5) was investigated by adding three different types of inoculum combining cow manure, yeast extract or hydraulic residence time as variables with response vector of reduction of BOD5. In a 3-l reactors, a 95% removal of BOD5 from poultry slaughter wastewater was obtained with organic loading rates up to 31 kg BOD5 m(-3) d(-1) without loss of stability. This 95% removal was obtained between 25 and 39 degrees C with a hydraulic residence time between 3.5 and 4.5 h. The growth of the consortium of micro-organisms in the reactor followed a first-order kinetic with a constant specific growth rate of 0.054 h(-1). It was concluded that an inoculum from cow manure added with nutrients and yeast extract allowed a 95% removal of BOD5 from poultry slaughter wastewater at ambient temperatures within a hydraulic residence time of 4 h, sharply reducing possible environmental hazards.  相似文献

Physical-chemical monitoring and characterization of ciliate communities from a full-scale rotating biological system (RBC) have been carried out for a year. RBC system operated efficiently in removing the organic matter, as the decrease of the BOD5 loading along the successive RBC units revealed. 55 species of ciliated protozoa were identified in the RBC biofilms. Differences in abundance, occurrence and type of species were found along the different units of the RBC system; the last RBC held a more stable and diverse ciliate community. The complexity of interspecific relationships among the ciliates has been outlined using multivariate methods (Cluster and Correspondence analysis). Correlation between ciliate species and physical-chemical conditions were obtained by regression analysis. Results show that 12 species of ciliates were related to an optimal efficiency in organic matter removal, Litonotus crystallinus being the most sensitive species. The presence and abundance of Litonotus crystallinus and Acineria uncinata was associated with a decrease in the organic factor. Metopus es was the only species related to a decrease in process efficiency due to its association with an increase in organic factor. The results provide statistical evidence of the use of certain ciliate species as reliable bioindicators in full-scale RBC wastewater treatment plants.  相似文献

This study presents the performance characteristics of a plug flow phase separated anaerobic granular bed baffled reactor (GRABBR) fed with brewery wastewater at various operating conditions. The reactor achieved chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 93-96% with high methane production when operated at organic loading rates (OLRs) of 2.16-13.38kg COD m(-3)d(-1). The reactor configuration and microbial environment encouraged the acidogenic dominant zone to produce intermediate products suitable for degradation in the predominantly methanogenic zone. Noticeable phase separation between acidogenesis and methanogenesis mainly occurred at high OLR, involving a greater number of compartments to contribute to wastewater treatment. The highly active nature and good settling characteristics of methanogenic granular sludge offered high biomass retention and enhanced methanogenic activities within the system. The granular structure in the acidogenic dominant zone of the GRABBR was susceptible to disintegration and flotation. Methanogenic granular sludge was a multi-layered structure with Methanosaeta-like organisms dominant in the core.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic biodegradation of a mixed feed composed of vinasses and cutting oil wastewater (COW) in a laboratory upflow anaerobic fixed-film reactor (UAFF) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing the percentage of cutting oil wastewater in the feed. The UAFF reactor was initially started-up with vinasses as the only carbon source at an organic loading rate of 22.3 kg COD/m3 day and HRT of 0.8 days using porous particles as the support (SIRAN). The percentage of organic matter composed of vinasses was subsequently reduced while increasing the amount of cutting oil until 100% of cutting oil wastewater was added in the feed. Four stages were considered in the study (0, 42.4, 66.6 and 100% COW). HRT was adjusted in order to maintain an approximately constant organic loading rate applied to the system. Under theses conditions, the UAFF reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation with hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range 0.8–0.15 days and organic loading rates (OLR) between 22.3 and 14.9 kg COD/m3 day in order to evaluate the treatment capacity of the system. The COD removal efficiency was found to be 87% COD and 94.6% TOC in the reactor when treating vinasses at 22.3 kg COD/m3 day. The volumetric methane level produced in the digester reached 0.45 m3/m3 day. After an operating period of 120 days, the reactor was fed with cutting oil wastewater (COW) as the only source of carbon. An OLR of 16.7 kg COD/m3 day was achieved with 85.8% COD removal efficiency (58.1%TOC) in the experimental UAFF reactor. Under these conditions the volumetric methane produced in the digester was negligible.Hence, COW can be removed, if not degraded, by anaerobic treatment in the presence of a biodegradable co-substrate. Wine vinasses degradation creates conditions for non-biological removal of COW constituents. More studies are necessary in order to test the mechanisms of organic removal when biodegradation apparently had ceased. Also, toxicity assays of COW are necessary to evaluate the toxicity to the methanogenic community.  相似文献

In this study, performance of a lab-scale hybrid up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, treating a chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater, was evaluated under different operating conditions. This study consisted of two experimental stages: first, acclimation to the pharmaceutical wastewater and second, determination of maximum loading capacity of the hybrid UASB reactor. Initially, the carbon source in the reactor feed came entirely from glucose, applied at an organic loading rate (OLR) 1 kg COD/m(3) d. The OLR was gradually step increased to 3 kg COD/m(3) d at which point the feed to the hybrid UASB reactor was progressively modified by introducing the pharmaceutical wastewater in blends with glucose, so that the wastewater contributed approximately 10%, 30%, 70%, and ultimately, 100% of the carbon (COD) to be treated. At the acclimation OLR of 3 kg COD/m(3) d the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 2 days. During this period of feed modification, the COD removal efficiencies of the anaerobic reactor were 99%, 96%, 91% and 85%, and specific methanogenic activities (SMA) were measured as 240, 230, 205 and 231 ml CH(4)/g TVS d, respectively. Following the acclimation period, the hybrid UASB reactor was fed with 100% (w/v) pharmaceutical wastewater up to an OLR of 9 kg COD/m(3) d in order to determine the maximum loading capacity achievable before reactor failure. At this OLR, the COD removal efficiency was 28%, and the SMA was measured as 170 ml CH(4)/g TVS d. The hybrid UASB reactor was found to be far more effective at an OLR of 8 kg COD/m(3) d with a COD removal efficiency of 72%. At this point, SMA value was 200 ml CH(4)/g TVS d. It was concluded that the hybrid UASB reactor could be a suitable alternative for the treatment of chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater.  相似文献

The treatment of municipal-type synthetic wastewater was carried out using a three stages net-like rotating biological contactor (NRBC). The results indicated that, compared with conventional rotating biological contactor (RBC), NRBC have several advantages, such as quick start-up, high biomass concentration and can handle high organic loading rates. The COD and total nitrogen removal rates achieved were 78.8–89.7% and 40.2–61.4%, respectively, in aerobic treatment of low COD municipal-type wastewater at hydraulic retention times (HRT) from 5 to 9 h. The COD removal rate achieved 80–95% when organic loading varied between 16 and 40 gCOD/m2 d. A large amount of nematodes were found in the NRBC system, which made the NRBC system produce relatively low amounts of waste sludge, due to their grazing.  相似文献

The use of a down-flow fluidized bed (DFFB) reactor for the treatment of a sulfate-rich synthetic wastewater was investigated to obtain insight into the outcome of sulfate reduction in a biofilm attached to a plastic support under a down-flow regime. Fine low-density polyethylene particles were used as support for developing a biofilm within the reactor. The reactor treated a volatile fatty acids mixture of acetate or lactate, propionate, and butyrate at different chemical oxygen demand (COD) to sulfate ratios ranging from 1.67 to 0.67 (g/g). Organic loading rate changed from 2.5 to 5 g COD/L x day and sulfate loading rate increased from 1.5 to 7.3 g SO(4) (2-)/L x day. At the beginning of continuous operation, methanogenesis was the predominant process; however, after 187 days, sulfate reduction became the main ongoing biological process. After 369 days, a COD removal of 93% and a sulfate removal of 75% were reached. Total sulfide concentrations in the reactor ranged from 105, when the reactor was mainly methanogenic, to around 1,215 mg/L at the end of the experiment. The high sulfide concentrations did not affect the performance of the reactor. Results demonstrated that the configuration of the DFFB reactor was suitable for the anaerobic treatment of sulfate-rich wastewater.  相似文献

Lurgi coal gasification wastewater (LCGW) is a refractory wastewater, whose anaerobic treatment has been a severe problem due to its toxicity and poor biodegradability. Using a mesophilic (35 ± 2 °C) reactor as a control, thermophilic anaerobic digestion (55 ± 2 °C) of LCGW was investigated in a UASB reactor. After 120 days of operation, the removal of COD and total phenols by the thermophilic reactor could reach 50-55% and 50-60% respectively, at an organic loading rate of 2.5 kg COD/(m3 d) and HRT of 24 h; the corresponding efficiencies were both only 20-30% in the mesophilic reactor. After thermophilic digestion, the wastewater concentrations of the aerobic effluent COD could reach below 200 mg/L compared with around 294 mg/L if mesophilic digestion was done and around 375 mg/L if sole aerobic pretreatment was done. The results suggested that thermophilic anaerobic digestion improved significantly both anaerobic and aerobic biodegradation of LCGW.  相似文献

A sequencing batch anaerobic/aerobic reactor was operated in such a manner as to simulate typical variations in loading and influent feed composition as might be encountered in an urban wastewater treatment plant. The impact of these variations on biological phosphorous removal (BPR) was assayed using a number of statistical techniques including simple regression, multiple regression, ANOVA and factorial analysis. The results demonstrate the importance of biomass loading on efficiency and relate this to the level of mixed liquor suspended solids retained within the system. The ratio of COD:P in the influent wastewater had no significant impact on removal. Multiple regression analysis of factors associated with the release of phosphorous in the anaerobic phase revealed a strong correlation of these factors with subsequent phosphorous uptake efficiency in the aerobic phase. On the basis of the coefficients derived from the analysis an equation was proposed which showed a good fit to experimental data on BPR.  相似文献

In the present study, an attempt has been made to treat dairy wastewater entirely via anaerobic treatment over a period of 215 days, using two-stage Hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (HUASB) reactors, which offer the advantages associated both with fixed film and upflow sludge blanket treatments. A HUASB with polyurethane foam cubes was used for stage I, and a HUASB utilizing PVC-cut rings was used for stage II. The output from stage I was used as the input for stage II. The two-stage reactor was operated at an organic loading rate that varied from 10.7 to 21.4 kg COD m3/d for a period of 215 days, including the start-up period. The ideal organic loading rate for the two-stage reactor was 19.2 kg COD/m3/d. A further 21.4 kg COD m3/d increase in the organic loading rate resulted in the souring of the reactor function in stage I, which consequently reduced the overall reactor performance. Combined COD removal during the stable operation period (10.7 to 19.2 kg COD m3/d) occurred in a range between 97 and 99%. The methane content in the biogas varied from 65 to 70% in stage I, and from 63 to 66% in stage II. The two-stage anaerobic treatment using HUASB with PUF and PVC described in this work is expected to constitute a better alternative for the complete treatment of dairy wastewater than high-rate anaerobic, anaerobic/aerobic, and two-phase anaerobic treatment methods.  相似文献

Black liquor (BL) is a notoriously difficult wastewater to treat due to the economic and efficiency limitations of physiochemical methods and intrinsic difficulties with bioremediation strategies caused by the high pH (10–13) and lignin content. This study investigated the feasibility of a novel bioaugmentation strategy for BL treatment, which uses a mixed microorganism culture of lignocellulose-degrading microorganisms isolated from degraded bamboo slips. Black liquor treatment was assessed in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal with a sequencing batch reactor organic loading rate of 9 kg COD/L·day under highly alkaline conditions (pH?10). Results revealed that bioaugmented activated sludge treatment of BL with special mixed microorganisms significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of COD, color, and lignin from the wastewater up to 64.8, 50.5, and 53.2 %, respectively. Gel permeation chromatography profiles showed that the bioaugmentation system could successfully degrade high molecular lignin fragments in black liquor. This work confirms bioaugmentation as a feasible alternative strategy for enhanced biological treatment of wastewater with high lignin content and high organic load rate under strongly alkaline conditions.  相似文献
