Fourth and 5th instar larvae ofHeliothis armigera (Hübner) parasitised byEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky consumed significantly less chickpea flour diet than unparasitised larvae of the same age in the laboratory. Significant reduction in diet consumption, larval weight gain and frass produced at 24 and 48 h following parasitisation was observed in 5th instar host larvae. Parasitised larvae retained a greater percentage of food ingested (AD) than did the unparasitised ones. Unparasitised 5th instar larvae ofH. armigera were more efficient in converting the ingested food (ECI) and digested food (ECD) into body substance than larvae of similar age parasitised byE. bryani.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera, a highly polyphagous pest, has a broad host spectrum, causes significant levels of yield loss in many agriculturally important crops. Serine primarily responsible for most of the proteolytic activity in the larval gut of lepidopteron insects. Neonate larvae were reared on artificial diet and chickpea seeds smeared with Subabul Trypsin Inhibitor. Larvae fed with artificial diet showed reduction in larval weight up to 21% (HSTI) and 43% (LSTI). However, larvae fed on seeds showed significant reduction in weight, 52.4% (HSTI) and 60.3% (LSTI), suggesting that the diet also plays a vital role on the effectiveness of the inhibitors on larval growth and development. HSTI and LSTI inhibited the gut proteinases from larvae fed on artificial diet significantly (41.40% and 64.36%) compared to the gut proteinases (27.80% and 38.90%) from larvae fed on chickpea seeds. Seeds smeared with 10,000 TIU resulted in complete mortality of larvae while there was no mortality observed in artificial diet. The results reveal that LSTI is a stronger inhibitor of insect gut proteinases and for larvae fed with poor nutrition in the natural ecosystems, low level expression of inhibitor would be enough to affect the growth and development. Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson is an important larval parasitoid ofHelicoverpa armigera (Hübner) andH. punctigera (Wallengren) in Australia. The effect of host plant on parasitism of second instarH. armigera byM. demolitor was investigated in a glasshouse experiment. Parasitism was low (0%) on chickpea. Moderate to high levels of parasitism (22.4% to 75.4%) were recorded on sorghum, sunflower, maize, cotton and soybean. The results suggest that releases of larval parasitoids into chickpea are unlikely to enhance parasitismlevels during the first spring generation ofHelicoverpa spp.  相似文献

The pattern of virulence (based on inclusion bodies) for 3 baculoviruses ofHeliothis, i.e. a unicapsid, nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HzSNPV); a multicapsid, nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HaMNPV); and a granulosis virus (HaGIV) was the same (HzSNPV>HaMNPV>HaGIV) for 3 species ofHeliothis. Based on numbers of nucleocapsids, however, the HaGIV was ca 2X more virulent than the HaMNPV for larvae ofH. virescens, (F.), and the HaMNPV was about 6X more virulent than the HaGIV for larvae ofH. armigera (Hübner). The fastest rate of larval mortality was obtained with HzSNPV. Although the mortality rate for HaGIV was faster than that of HaMNPV forH. virescens andH. armigera, it was slower than that of HaMNPV for larvae ofH. zea (Boddie). The pattern of susceptibility ofHeliothis species to HzSNPV and HaMNPV wasH. zea>H. virescens>H. armigera. Differences in susceptibility of the least susceptible species (H. armigera) and the most susceptible species (H. zea) to HzSNPV was ca. 1.6 X. Larvae ofH. zea, however, were ca. 4 to 6 X more susceptible to HaMNPV than were larvae ofH. virescens orH. armigera. A different pattern of susceptibility was recorded for HaGIV when larvae were challenged with HzSNPV and HaMNPV. Larvae ofH. virescens were ca. 20 and 35 X more susceptible to HaGIV than were larvae ofH. zea andH. armigera, respectively.  相似文献

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seeds contain Bowman–Birk proteinase inhibitors, which are ineffective against the digestive proteinases of larvae of the insect pest Helicoverpa armigera. We have identified and purified a low expressing proteinase inhibitor (PI), distinct from the Bowman–Birk Inhibitors and active against H. armigera gut proteinases (HGP), from chickpea seeds. N-terminal sequencing of this HGP inhibitor revealed a sequence similar to reported pea (Pisum sativum) and chickpea -l-fucosidases and also homologous to legume Kunitz inhibitors. The identity was confirmed by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization – time of flight analysis of tryptic peptides and isolation of DNA sequence coding for the mature protein. Available sequence data showed that this protein forms a distinct phylogenetic cluster with Kunitz inhibitors from Glycine max, Medicago truncatula, P. sativum and Canavalia lineata. The isolated coding sequence was cloned into a yeast expression vector and produced as a recombinant protein in Pichia pastoris. -l-fucosidase activity was not detectable in purified or recombinant protein, by solution assays. The recombinant protein did not inhibit chymotrypsin or subtilisin activity but did exhibit stoichiometric inhibition of trypsin, comparable to soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor. The recombinant protein exhibited higher inhibition of total HGP activity as compared to soybean kunitz inhibitor, even though it preferentially inhibited HGP-trypsins. H. armigera larvae fed on inhibitor-incorporated artificial diet showed significant reduction in average larval weight after 18 days of feeding demonstrating potent antimetabolic activity. The over-expression of this gene in chickpea could act as an endogenous source of resistance to H. armigera.  相似文献

Transgenic cotton has been released for cultivation in several parts of the world to increase crop productivity. However, concerns have been raised regarding the possible undesirable effects of genetically modified crops on non-target organisms in the eco-system. Therefore, we studied the effects of transgenic cottons with cry1Ac gene from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) on the natural enemies of cotton bollworm/legume pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under field and laboratory conditions. There was no apparent effect of transgenic cotton on the relative abundance of predatory spiders (Clubiona sp. and Neoscona sp.), coccinellid (Cheilomenes sexmaculatus Fab.), and the chrysopid (Chrysoperla carnea Stephens). However, the abundance of spiders, coccinellids, and chrysopids was quite low in insecticide protected plots towards end of the cropping season. There was a significant reduction in cocoon formation and adult emergence of the ichneumonid parasitoid, Campoletis chlorideae Uchnida reared on H. armigera larvae fed on the leaves of transgenic cottons before and after parasitization. However, no Bt toxins were detected in H. armigera larvae and the parasitoid cocoons with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Reduction in cocoon formation was because of early mortality of the H. armigera larvae due to Bt toxins in the leaves of transgenic cotton. There was a slight reduction in adult weight and fecundity, and prolongation of the larval period when the parasitoid was raised on H. armigera larvae fed on the leaves of transgenic cotton before and after parasitization. Survival and development of C. chlorideae was also poor when H. armigera larvae were fed on the leaves of cotton hybrid Mech 184. The adverse effects of transgenic cotton on survival and development of C. chlorideae were largely due to early mortality, and possibly poor nutritional quality of H. armigera larvae due to toxic effects of the transgene.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the characteristics of parasitism of diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella (L.), a worldwide pest of crucifers, by a larval parasite,Diadegma semiclausum Hellén. Results showed that the greater the host larval density, the lesser was the percentage of larvae parasitized. The area of discovery decreased with increasing parasite density, but k-value remained practically unchanged. Parasitism reduced food consumption in parasitised larvae. No difference was observed in duration of larval instars between the parasitized and healthy larvae. As the frequency of superparasitism increased, the proportion of production of female progeny also increased. Presence of parasite larva within the host larva deterred superparasitism greater than the presence of parasite egg. Presence of larva of eitherD. semiclausum or another larval parasite,Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov, within host larva deterred multiparasitism by either species greater than the presence of egg of either parasite species.Diadegma semiclausum was much more aggressive thanC. plutellae in parasitisingP. xylostella larvae.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera is a serious pest of chickpea and causes great damage to crop. Extensive and indiscriminate use of insecticides has led to the development of resistance in H. armigera. Among the several alternative methods for management of H. armigera, the nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) is promising, whereas Trichoderma sp. have shown promising results against chickpea wilt. The experiments to evaluate biocontrol package against H. armigera and wilt disease under field conditions were conducted. Lowest H. armigera larval population (0.71 larvae/plant) was recorded in chemical control, which was at a par with biocontrol package (0.91 larvae/plant), and both the treatments were significantly better than control. Lowest per cent pod damage (3.85%) was recorded in chemical control followed by biocontrol treatment (5.08%) and unsprayed control (8.61%). The yields from biocontrol package (13.45 q/ha) and chemical control (15.37 q/ha) were significantly higher than unsprayed control (10.7 q/ha). There was no disease incidence in all treatments in both 2008 and 2009.  相似文献

The efficacy of methanolic seed extracts of Annona squamosa (As) and Prosopis juliflora (Pj) individually and in combination with spore-crystal mixture of Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) was tested against third instar larvae of Helicoverpa armigera. The combination of botanicals with Btk significantly decreased LC50 values in less time as compared to individual treatments. As and Pj in combination with Btk significantly affected feeding and dietary utilization of H. armigera significantly than in individual treatments. Physiological effects found in larvae fed on Btk and botanicals included extended larval and pupal durations, decreased adult longevity and fecundity, difficulty in moulting between various instars, formation of larval–pupal intermediates and abnormal pupae. As was found to have a higher interaction with Btk than Pj. Further, Btk showed strong synergistic action with As and Pj, which are the promising candidates for development of alternative bioinsecticide in IPM programs.  相似文献

A potentially important and understudied biological control agent in US agroecosystems is the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. Red imported fire ants may be particularly important biological control agents because we can manipulate their abundance with changes in habitat complexity. The effect of habitat complexity on biological control by fire ants was determined using plots of collards intercropped with white clover (complex habitat) and simple collard monocrops. The most economically significant pests of collards are larvae of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.). Predation of DBM larvae by fire ants was more rapid and efficient in the intercrop than the monocrop. Red imported fire ants were 23% less abundant in the intercrop than the monocrop, however, suggesting that fire ants had a greater per capita effect on DBM survival in the complex habitat. Red imported fire ant predation of DBM larvae was significantly affected by larval density. Red imported fire ants also reduced the survival of leaf beetles, another economically significant pest taxa, by 45%. Furthermore, collard leaf damage tended to be inversely related to fire ant density and fire ants were more effective at reducing crop damage in the complex intercrop. Our study indicates the ability of red imported fire ants to be effective biological control agents and suggests that increasing habitat complexity can enhance red imported fire ant efficacy and herbivore control.  相似文献

Refined petroleum products have been used since last century for the control of phytophagous arthropod pests. The response ofHelicoverpa spp. and its natural enemies to petroleum oil sprays on cotton was investigated under laboratory choice/no-choice and small plot field conditions at the Australian Cotton Research Institute at Narrabri in New South Wales. In oviposition choice and no-choice tests, petroleum oil sprays suppressed oviposition inHelicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) but notH. armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).H. punctigera females laid about seven times as many eggs on the control (water sprayed) cotton plants as on either petroleum oil spray alone or oil mixed with Kelgum. HoweverH. armigera females laid the same number of eggs on both treated and control plants. In field trials, the number of eggs per metre per sample date found on the plots treated with petroleum oil spray was 3.83 compared with 6.29 and 7.82 eggs respectively on plots treated with conventional insecticide sprays and the unsprayed plots. The number of larvae found on plots treated with petroleum oil sprays was 2.9 times higher than the conventional insecticide sprayed plot, however, this was 1.6 times fewer than the unsprayed plot. The cotton yields from plots treated with petroleum oil sprays was 3.70 bales/ha compared with 7.32 and 2.69 bales respectively from the conventional insecticide treated and the unsprayed plots. Petroleum oil sprays had little or no effect on predatory beetles, bugs, lacewings and spiders.
Résumé Des produits de pétrole raffiné ont été utilisés depuis le siècle dernier pour lutter contre les arthropodes ravageurs phytophages. La réponse deHelicoverpa spp. et des ses ennemis naturels à des pulvérisations d'huile de pétrole sur cotonnier a été étudiée en laboratoire dans des expériences de choix et d'absence de choix ainsi que dans de petites parcelles en plein champ à l'Institut de Recherche australien sur le coton (Narrabri, Nouvelles Galles du Sud). Dans des expériences de choix/non choix concernant l'oviposition, les pulvérisations d'huile de pétrole empêchaient la ponte d'Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) mais pas deH. armigera (Hubner) (Lep.: Noctuidae). Les femelles deH. punctigera pondent environ 7 fois plus d'oeufs sur les plants de coton témoins (pulvérisés avec de l'eau) que sur les plants traités à l'huile de pétrole seule ou en mélange avec du Kelgum. Par contre,H. armigera pond le même nombre d'oeufs sur les plants traités ou témoins. Dans les essais en plein champ, les parcelles pulvérisées avec de l'huile de pétrole comportent significativement moins deHelicoverpa et présentent une récolte plus importante que celles non traitées; cependant le nombre de chenilles est plus élevé et la récolte moindre que dans les parcelles traitées avec des insecticides. Les pulvérisations d'huile de pétrole ont un effet faible ou nul sur la faune auxiliaire.

Oviposition preference and several measures of offspring performance of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) were investigated on a subset of its host plants that were selected for their reputed importance in the field in Australia. They included cotton, pigeon pea, sweet corn, mungbean, bean and common sowthistle. Plants were at their flowering stage when presented to gravid female moths. Flowering pigeon pea evoked far more oviposition than did the other plant species and was the most preferred plant for neonate larval feeding. It also supported development of the most robust larvae and pupae, and these produced the most fecund moths. Common sowthistle and cotton were equally suitable to pigeon pea for larval development, but these two species received far fewer H. armigera eggs than did pigeon pea. Mungbean also received relatively few eggs, but it did support intermediate measures of larval growth and survival. Fewest eggs were laid on bean and it was also the least beneficial in terms of larval growth. Among the host plant species tested, only flowering pigeon pea supported a good relationship between oviposition preference of H. armigera and its subsequent offspring performance. Australian H. armigera moths are thus consistent with Indian H. armigera moths in their ovipositional behaviour and larval performance relative to pigeon pea. The results suggest that the host recognition and acceptance behaviour of this species is fixed across its geographical distribution and they support the theory that pigeon pea might be one of the primary host plants of this insect. These insights, together with published results on the sensory responses of the females to volatiles derived from the different host plant species tested here, help to explain why some plant species are primary targets for the ovipositing moths whereas others are only secondary targets of this polyphagous pest, which has a notoriously broad host range. The potential of companion crops to serve as diversionary hosts for ovipositing Helicoverpa spp. moths in chickpea cropping systems was evaluated in a field experiment. Patterns of egg distribution by Helicoverpa spp. within paired combinations of chickpea and each of six companion crop species were documented in a split-plot design sampled four times during the 1999 winter growing season. Chickpea was attractive to ovipositing Helicoverpa moths from as early as 14 days after planting and throughout the experimental period. The companion crop species varied in relative attractiveness to ovipositing moths but none was able to effectively divert Helicoverpa egg pressure away from chickpea for the duration of the experiment. Of all Helicoverpa spp. larvae recorded from all samples and crop combinations, 98.3% were found on chickpea. A marked aggregative oviposition behaviour of Helicoverpa spp. on tall weeds growing through the chickpea canopy was recorded. The relevance of observed patterns of host selection and inferred moth behaviour to management of Helicoverpa populations on chickpea are discussed.  相似文献

Facultative diapause, a strategy that allows insects to initiate additional generations when conditions are favorable or to enter diapause when they are not, has a profound effect on the ecology and evolution of species. Most previous studies have concentrated on the role of photoperiod and temperature in inducing facultative diapause in insects. In contrast, here we studied pupal diapause mediated by larval host plants in the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera, and confirmed that pupal weight is a critical factor. Two groups of third instar H. armigera larvae, kept at 25 °C with L:D = 8:16 and 20 °C with photoperiod of L:D = 8:16, respectively, were fed on six host plants and on artificial diet (as a control) to determine how larval host plants affect diapause incidence and related traits (such as pupal weight and developmental duration). The data showed larval host plants affected diapause incidence significantly and the effects could be masked by low temperature. Further analysis showed that pupal size, not the length of the sensitive stage, affected the decision to enter diapause. In a further experiment, third-instar to final-stage larvae deprived of artificial diet for 2 days demonstrated a direct relationship between pupal weight and diapause incidence. These results suggest that larval host plants, by affecting pupal size, may influence diapause occurrence in H. armigera. This has important adaptive significance for both over-wintering survival and the possibility for completing an additional generation.  相似文献

The predatorThanasimus formicarius (L.) (Coleoptera, Cleridae) and its preyIps typographus (L.) (Coleoptera, Scolytidae) were studied in the laboratory and the field. In the laboratory, 11T. formicarius laid 71–132 eggs (mean=162) during 66–123 days. During this time they ate 66–132I. typographus adults per pair (male +female). The number of eggs laid per female was not correlated with life span or the number ofIps eaten. In the field, predation byT. formicarius larvae and other natural enemies onI. typographus brood was studied in the last year of an outbreak. Caged and uncaged spruce bolts attacked byI. typographus were used, and pairs ofT. formicarius were released in the cages. The treatments were: uncaged bolts, caged bolts withoutT. formicarius, caged bolts with 4T. formicarius pairs, and caged bolts with 8T. formicarius pairs. The productivity ofI. typographus was highest in the caged bolts withoutT. formicarius (mean=4.5 offspring/female) and lowest in the uncaged bolts (mean=0.9 offspring/female). The density ofI. typographus galleries was similar in the different treatments. Hence, the variation in productivity between treatments could not have been due to differences in the levels of intraspecific competition. There was no difference in bark beetle productivity or density ofT. formicarius larvae between bolts with 4 pairs ofT. formicarius and bolts with 8 pairs (mean=2.5 offspring/female). This indicates that some kind of interference occurred betweenT. formicarius individuals (e.g. cannibalism) and that a maximum level of predation was reached. Predation by larvae ofMedetera spp. (Diptera, Dolichopodidae),Thanasimus spp. and other beetles, and parasitism by wasps (Hymenoptera, Pteromalidae) probably caused the low productivity in the uncaged bolts.   相似文献

Influence of the food plants ofHeliothis armigera (Hb.) on the degree of parasitism by exotic parasiteCotesia kazak Telenga (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied in cages in the laboratory on 7 food plants such as cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench], Dolichos (dolichos lablab L.), pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.], Cowpea (Vigna unquiculata (L.) and chickpea (Cicer arietium L.). To determine the preference of the parasite 2 test methods were employed. In single plant choice test cotton was most preferred. Next in order of preference were tomato and okra. Dolichos, pigeonpea, cowpea and chickpea were least preferred. In multiple choice test, however, cotton and okra were preferred followed by tomato. Parasites were seen visiting these plants very frequently and high parasitism was recorded on these plants. Chick pea, pigeon pea, cowpea and Dolichos were the least preferred food plants. There appears to be some difference in fecundity as affected by some food plants. Exposure on okra, cotton and tomato resulted in higher cocoon production as compared to pigeonpea, Dolichos, cowpea and chickpea. There was, however, no difference in sex-ratio and longevity of the progeny as affected by food plants. This exotic parasite should be released first in crops such as cotton, okra and tomato on whichH. armigera is a very serious pest in India and elsewhere. We report and discuss effects of four insect growth regulators: buprofezin, fenoxycarb pyriproxyfen and chlorfluazuron, at concentrations recommended for agricultural use on six species of natural enemies of homopteran pests. Dipping in buprofezin had no appreciable effect on adult mortality, oviposition and development ofComperiella bifasciata (Howard), (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). When exposed to hosts treated with buprofezin, percentage mortality of adultEncyrtus infelix Embleton (Encyrtidae) was low; buprofezin had some detrimental effect on immature stages ofE. infelix when applied prior to parasitization, but not when introduced after parasitization. Buprofezin had a slight effect on the immature stages ofCryptochaetum iceryae Williston (Diptera: Cryptochaetidae), while fenoxycarb and pyriproxyfen had marked detrimental effects on parasitization and/or development of the parasitoid fly. None of the larvae ofRodolia cardinalis Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) developed into adults after application of buprofezin, fenoxycarb or pyriproxyfen. Buprofezin and chlorfluazuron completely prevented egg hatch ofChilocorus bipustulatus L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Buprofezin did not adversely affect egg hatch and larval development ofElatophilus hebraicus Pericart (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae); fenoxycarb or pyriproxyfen applied either before or after oviposition on pine needles caused total suppression of egg hatch.  相似文献

Pathogenicity ofHeliothis nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HSNPV) to the corn earworm,Heliothis armigera, was studied using 3 different inoculative methods. The LD50 values of 4th-instar larvae inoculated with corn-fed, diet-fed and inoculum-imbiding method were 1.85×106, 2.55×105 and 1,22×103 PIBs/larva, respectively. The inoculum-imbiding is more sensitive and convenient for inoculatingH. armigera with HSNPV. The HSNPV product, Elcar®, was highly pathogenic toH. armigera, the LD50 values of 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-instar larvae being 27, 83 and 1,221 PIBs/larva, respectively, as measured by the inoculum-imbiding method. The mortality of 4th-instar larvae caused by HSNPV was increased, but the incubation period was shortened with higher incubation temperatures. However, the high temperature at 35°C caused a lower mortality, and a prolongation of the median lethal time (LT50). Stability and persistence of HSNPV preparations were better in January–February and April–May than in June–July and October–November periods when sprayed on corn silks under field conditions. The HSNPV was inactivated by weak alkaline dew (pH 8.1) collected from soybean leaves, but it remained active on those from corn, tomato and asparagus with pH 7.2–7.3. The artificial heavy rainfall of 242 mm/h for 30 min did not wash off HSNPV preparations sprayed on the corn silks.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera is one of the most devastating, cosmopolitan, polyphagous and multivoltine pests of agricultural crops. The growing side-effects of synthetic insecticides used to control agricultural pests, have amplified demand for the relatively safe and biodegradable compounds which offer benefits over synthetic chemical insecticides. Hence, the current study investigates the effects of Nerium oleander methanol leaf extracts on the physiological and reproductive fitness of H. armigera. Addition of the range of extract concentration; 0.5%–10.0%; in the larval diet induced an appreciable and dose-dependent effect on the developmental parameters of H. armigera. The extract, though resulted in moderate larval and pupal mortality, caused significant growth regulatory effects. A prolonged larval duration, formation of larval-pupal intermediates and significant reduction in the average larval weight gain by 26.5% - 63.4%; and pupal weight by 23.9% - 63.4% was recorded. The 74.6% to 54.9% reduction in the oviposition duration in the emerged adults, and diminished fecundity and egg hatch in the corresponding range of 0.78–0.63 and 0.89–0.62 demonstrated negative impact of the extract on the adult reproductive fitness. The adverse impact of N. oleander methanol leaf extracts on the growth and development of H. armigera leading to the reproductive disadvantage in adults can be beneficial in the field management; though its use can only be ascertained after identification of bioactive constituents and elucidating their mode of action.  相似文献

We studied the effect of siRNA on larval development by selective targeting of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene of Helicoverpa armigera. Chemically synthesized siRNA molecules were directly fed to H. armigera larvae along with the artificial diet. The siRNA treatment resulted in specific gene silencing of AChE and consequently brought about mortality, growth inhibition of larvae, reduction in the pupal weight, malformation and drastically reduced fecundity as compared to control larvae. Our studies suggest some novel roles for AChE in growth and development of insect larvae and demonstrate that siRNA can be readily taken up by insect larvae with their diet.  相似文献
