AIM: To describe the effects of chronological age and biological age (pubertal development) on serum lipid and lipoprotein levels, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference in Spanish adolescents. METHODS: A representative Spanish sample of 526 adolescents (254 males and 272 females), were studied. Total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), triglycerides, apolipoprotein A1 and B, and lipoprotein(a) were measured, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) was calculated. Additional measurements included BMI and waist circumference. Adolescents were classified according to chronological age, and pubertal development (also age of menarche in females). RESULTS: In males, serum TC levels were lower at late puberty in comparison with early puberty, and serum LDLc levels were lower at late puberty in comparison with mid and early puberty. Serum HDLc levels were lower at mid puberty in comparison with early and late puberty. Serum TC and LDLc levels were not different when analyzed according to chronological age. In females, HDLc levels were lower at late puberty in comparison with early and mid puberty, but no differences were found when HDLc and the other studied lipid and lipoprotein variables were analyzed according to chronological age, or age of menarche. All the observed differences persisted after adjusting for BMI and waist circumference. In female adolescents, both BMI and waist circumference were higher at late puberty in comparison with early and mid puberty, while in males, BMI and waist circumference were different when analyzed according to chronological age. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the assessment of pubertal development may provide additional valuable information when interpreting lipid profile and body fat in adolescents.  相似文献

AIM: To evaluate height, bone growth, areal bone mineral density (aBMD), volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and markers of bone turnover in a group of patients affected by congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). PATIENTS: There were 50 patients (23 males, 27 females), aged 1-28 years, affected by CAH due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency: 27 with the salt-wasting (SW); 14 with the simple virilizing (SV), and 9 with the nonclassical (NC) forms. METHODS: Bone morphometry was evaluated with the metacarpal index (MI) and lumbar aBMD and vBMD (L2-L4) by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum osteocalcin was used as a marker of bone formation, while urinary cross-linked N-telopeptides of type-I collagen and free deoxypyridinoline levels were evaluated as indexes of bone resorption. RESULTS: The height standard deviation score (SDS) was -0.41 +/- 1.4 in SW patients, -0.01 +/- 1.9 in SV patients, and -0.01 +/- 2.3 in NC patients. There was no significant difference among groups and against zero. The MI SDS was also not different between groups and against zero. aBMD was significantly lower in the pubertal patients compared with normal values, but only when patients with the SW and SV forms were considered together (p < 0.05). vBMD was significantly reduced in all patients with the classical form. Bone markers were not different in patients and controls. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that normal height can be attained in CAH patients; however, an impairment in bone growth and mineralization may be found in adolescents and young adults affected by the classical form.  相似文献

AIMS/METHODS: We established age- and sex-related reference ranges for serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) levels in 807 healthy Turkish children (428 boys, 379 girls), and constructed a model for calculation of standard deviation scores of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 according to age, sex and pubertal stage. RESULTS: Serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations tended to be higher in girls compared to boys of the same ages, but the differences were statistically significant only in pubertal ages (9-14 years) for IGF-I and only in prepubertal ages for IGFBP-3 (6-8 years) (p < 0.05). Peak IGF-I concentrations were observed earlier in girls than boys (14 vs. 15 years, Tanner stage IV vs. V) starting to decline thereafter. IGFBP-3 levels peaked at age 13 and at Tanner stage IV in both sexes with a subsequent fall. Serum levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 increased steadily with age in the prepubertal stage followed by a rapid increase in IGF-I in the early pubertal stages. A relatively steeper increase in IGF-I but not in IGFBP-3 levels was observed at age 10-11 years in girls and at 12-13 years in boys which preceded the reported age of pubertal growth spurt. At late pubertal stages, both IGF-I and IGFBP-3 either did not change or decreased by increasing age. Interrelationships between growth factors and anthropometric measurements have been described, and the physiologic consequences of these have been discussed in detail. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in the pattern of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in the present paper and those reported in other studies emphasize the importance of locally established reference ranges. Establishment of this reference data and a standard deviation score prediction model based on age, sex and puberty will enhance the diagnostic power and utility of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in evaluating growth disorders in our population.  相似文献

Abstract: The semi-longitudinal collection of growth measurements in male and female hamadryas baboons has enabled documentation of the timing of puberty and the development of sexually dimorphic growth patterns in body weight, crown-rump length (CRL), limb lengths, and muscle mass. In addition, another sexually dimorphic characteristic appears to be the presence of a pubertal growth spurt in body weight, and possibly CRL, in male but not female baboons. Serum testosterone levels rose during male development; however, there was a progressive decrease in dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels indicating the absence of adrenarche. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and its major binding protein, IGFBP-3, both rose during pubertal development; however, a simultaneous rise in the IGF-I:IGFBP-3 molar ratio suggests other factors may enhance the bioactivity of IGF-I during puberty. A distinct rise in serum osteocalcin levels was also associated with puberty in male baboons. These growth and hormonal changes during puberty in the hamadryas baboon indicate that this species provides a close primate model for human puberty.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal growth and bone age (BA) development are the most important clinical parameters for monitoring adequate glucocorticoid replacement in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyze the growth pattern of patients treated for CAH of the salt wasting (SW) and simple virilizing (SV) clinical forms; to evaluate final height as compared to reference data and individual target height; to evaluate the course of BA development. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A large database of 598 patients with CAH was created in 5 Central European countries and growth data of 341 treated patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were of Caucasian origin. Centiles were constructed in a cross-sectional manner and an additional longitudinal analysis was performed in order to evaluate the pubertal growth spurt by applying particular statistical methods (Preece-Baines model). RESULTS: The growth of SW CAH patients was impaired in infancy and early childhood (0-3 years of age), but followed normal patterns in childhood until puberty. In contrast, children with SV CAH had normal patterns of growth in infancy and early childhood and were considerably taller than healthy references during childhood. In the longitudinal study, peak height velocity in both boys and girls was normal, but it occurred at an earlier age than in the standard population. The final height of patients with CAH was reduced in comparison to both the reference and the individual target height. No correlations were found between final height and age at the start of the therapy in SV patients or between final height and year of birth. BA was advanced in both types of CAH, but more accelerated in SV patients. CONCLUSION: Characteristic growth patterns for treated SV and SW CAH children were identified, with a normal pubertal growth spurt and reduced final height being observed.  相似文献

While there is good evidence suggesting IGF-I links to pubertal development and crown-rump length growth among rhesus monkeys, linkages between IGF-I and other measures of morphological growth have not been established. In this study, the pubertal growth spurt in a number of morphological characteristics of female rhesus monkeys is related to serum endocrine status of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and its binding protein, insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), to test the hypothesis that elevations in IGF-I and IGFBP-3 coincide with the time of greatest growth rate of different morphological characteristics. A longitudinal study of pubertal growth among four female rhesus monkeys was carried out across a 3-year period. Morphometric measurements included weight, crown-rump length, foot-length, and skinfolds at five sites (biceps, triceps, abdominal, subscapular, and suprailiac). These measures were taken as being representative of total mass, skeletal growth of the trunk and head, limb length, and body fatness, respectively. Measurements were carried out as closely as possible to 3-monthly, with interpolations being performed to standardise the data to exactly 3-monthly intervals for all individuals. Blood samples were taken at time of morphometry. Elevations in serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 took place in a manner similar to that of humans, and across the period associated with onset of puberty. Mean 3-monthly gain in crown-rump length and foot length showed significant peaks across the measurement period, while mean 3-monthly gains in weight and sum of five skinfolds did not. Greatest foot length gain occurred on average between 3-3.5 years of age, while crown-rump length gain was greatest between 3.75-4 years of age. Periods of greatest gain in crown-rump length and foot length took place across the period of elevated serum IGF-I levels, which was between 3-4.5 years of age. Significant elevations in IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were not coincident with greatest gains in foot length or crown-rump length. Thus the hypothesis does not hold true for the two measures showing significant peaks in 3-monthly gain across the measurement period. The nature of the endocrine impact on macaque morphology remains unclear, although this may be fundamental to the understanding of the variation in the pubertal growth spurt and its influence on morphology at maturity both within and across primate species.  相似文献

There are very few data available on the relationship between sporting activities, endocrine levels and changes in anthropometric measurements during growth. In order to study these relationships, we have made measurements of growth, changes in physical conformation and the plasma levels of several hormones [cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), testosterone, growth hormone, somatomedin C, insulin, glycaemia and haemoglobin A1C] in 175 boys, aged 10-16 years, who have played football at a competitive level and in 224 boys, severing as controls, who have never performed sporting activities regularly. The football players were divided into prepubertal and pubertal subjects (10-11.99 years, 12-13.99 years and 14-16 years, chronological and bone age groups). Our results showed no significant differences in the growth indices between prepubertal athletes and controls, but the plasma level of DHEA-S was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in the athletes. Pubertal football players, however, were significantly taller than the control subjects, particularly at 14-16 years chronological age. There were no such significant differences when bone age was considered. The pubertal football players were also more advanced in all biological indices of maturity, i.e. pubic hair, testicular volume and bone age. The increase in DHEA-S in pubertal football players, already seen in prepubertals, was also combined with a significant increase in testosterone, growth hormone and cortisol levels. Thus, in football players the DHEA-S level is already higher during prepuberty. This increase thus precedes all other indices of growth and maturation associated with puberty. We hypothesize that, while not excluding the possible influence of selection, as ours is a cross-sectional study, adrenal hyperactivity may be mainly responsible for the earlier onset of pubertal growth and maturity in exercising males.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) patients present an increased risk of osteoporosis, and increased fracture rate. Several factors have been identified as modulators of bone metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD). AIMS: To evaluate BMD and serum markers of bone turnover and establish their relationships with serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-2, IGFBP-3, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) in young adult CF patients. METHODS: Seventeen young adult CF patients (4 M, 13 F; mean age: 26.6 +/- 1.1 years) were enrolled in the study and analysed as a whole and as two subgroups according to the Shwachman-Kulczycki score. BMD was assessed at the lumbar spine (L1-L4) by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA Hologic QDR 2000). Bone turnover was assessed by measuring serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and serum carboxyterminal propeptide of type I collagen (PICP) as markers of bone formation, and serum cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) as a marker of bone resorption. Serum IGFs, IGFBPs, and cytokines were assayed using special commercial kits. Daily calcium intake and weekly physical activity were estimated by questionnaires. Forced expiratory volume in one second was used to assess pulmonary function. RESULTS: Lumbar BMD was normal, although there was a tendency to be lower in the patients with a lower clinical score. Both OC and PICP were increased, whereas ICTP was normal. Lumbar BMD was positively correlated with pulmonary function. IL-6 and C-reactive protein (markers of inflammation) were inversely correlated with PICP. Serum ICTP levels were correlated with serum IGF-I levels. No significant relationship was detected among lumbar BMD, markers of bone turnover and PTH, IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-2, IGFBP-3, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and body mass index Z-score. CONCLUSIONS: Bone turnover is abnormal in CF patients. Young adult CF patients with satisfying clinical status and nutritional conditions have normal BMD and increased serum OC and PICP levels.  相似文献

It is generally well accepted that the pubertal surge in estrogen is responsible for the rapid bone accretion that occurs during puberty and that this effect is mediated by an estrogen-induced increase in growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) action. To test the cause and effect relationship between estrogen and GH/IGF, we evaluated the consequence of ovariectomy (OVX) in prepubertal mice (C57BL/6J mice at 3 wk of age) on skeletal changes and the GH/IGF axis during puberty. Contrary to our expectations, OVX increased body weight (12-18%), bone mineral content (11%), bone length (4%), bone size (3%), and serum, liver, and bone IGF-I (30-50%) and decreased total body fat (18%) at 3 wk postsurgery. To determine whether estrogen is the key ovarian factor responsible for these changes, we performed a second experiment in which OVX mice were treated with placebo or estrogen implants. In addition to observing similar results compared with our first experiment, estrogen treatment partially rescued the increased body weight and bone size and completely rescued body fat and IGF-I levels. The increased bone accretion in OVX mice was due to increased bone formation rate (as determined by bone histomorphometry) and increased serum procollagen peptide. In conclusion, contrary to the known estrogen effect as an initiator of GH/IGF surge and thereby pubertal growth spurt, our findings demonstrate that loss of estrogen and/or other hormones during the prepubertal growth period effect leads to an increase in IGF-I production and bone accretion in mice.  相似文献

AIM: To provide reference data of biochemical markers of bone turnover and vitamin D metabolites for children and young adults. METHODS: Blood samples were taken from 176 healthy Dutch children and young adults (age range 7.6-25.3 years) to assess serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase, inorganic phosphate, osteocalcin, collagen type I cross-linked N-telopeptide, N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 levels. Cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen and carboxy-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen were assessed in 286 subjects (age range 1.4-25.3 years). RESULTS: Calcium and vitamin D levels were independent of age. The peak concentrations for collagen type I cross-linked N-telopeptide, cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen, carboxy-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin were found during puberty, in girls approximately 2.5 years earlier than in boys. Strong correlations were found between the markers of bone turnover, while no correlation was found between the markers of bone turnover and bone mineral density measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. CONCLUSIONS: Single measurements of bone markers cannot predict bone density. Reference data according to gender, age, and Tanner stage are given which allow calculating standard deviation scores adjusted for age and gender.  相似文献

Abstract: Measurement of bone turnover in conditions such as osteoporosis has been limited by the need for invasive iliac bone biopsy to reliably determine parameters of bone metabolism. Recent advances in the area of serum and urinary markers of bone metabolism have raised the possibility for noninvasive measurements; however, little nonhuman primate data exist for these parameters. The purpose of this experiment was to define the normal range and variability of several of the newer noninvasive bone markers which are currently under investigation in humans. The primary intent was to determine age and gender variability, as well as provide some normative data for future experiments in nonhuman primates. Twenty-four rhesus macaques were divided into equal groups of male and female according to the following age groupings: 3 years, 5–10 years, 15–20 years, and > 25 years. Urine was collected three times daily for a four-day period and measured for several markers of bone turnoverm including pyridinoline (PYD), deoxypyrodinoline (DPD), hydroxyproline, and creatinine. Bone mineral density measurements of the lumbar spine were performed at the beginning and end of the study period. Serum was also obtained at the time of bone densitometry for measurement of osteocalcin levels by radioimmunoassay. There were no significant differences in bone mineral density, urine PYD, or urine DPD based on gender. Bone density was lowest in the youngest animals, peaked in the 15–20-year group, but again decreased in the oldest animals. The osteocalcin, PYD, and DPD levels followed an inversely related pattern to bone density. The most important result was the relative age insensitivity of the ratio of PYD:DPD in monkeys up to age 20 years. Since bone density changes take months or years to become measurable and iliac biopsies are invasive, the PYD/DPD marker ratio may have important implications for rapid noninvasive measurement of the effects of potential treatments for osteoporosis in the non-human primate model.  相似文献

We tested the hypotheses that the levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) reflect the degree of control during the treatment of patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and that suppressed IGF-I levels during puberty contribute to decreased adult height. We measured serial IGF-I levels in 26 CAH patients followed over 6 months to 5 years. The control of CAH was variable, with several cases of overtreatment in infancy, and frequent undertreatment in childhood and adolescence. IGF-I levels were quite variable and inconsistent with the control of CAH. Our results suggest that IGF-I levels are not helpful in monitoring CAH patients; IGF-I does not seem to play a role in the growth failure during CAH therapy.  相似文献

Our understanding of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in cervids has been limited mostly to its effects on antler development in red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), fallow deer (Dama dama), and pudu (Pudu puda). Although IGF-I has been found to play a critical role in reproductive function of other mammals, its role in reproduction of deer is unknown. The objectives of the present study were to determine if serum levels of IGF-I change during the breeding season, assess whether age influences serum IGF-I, compare levels of IGF-I measured during and following the breeding season, and determine if IGF-I is associated with body and antler characteristics in free-ranging adult, male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). We collected serum and morphometric data from hunter-harvested and captured white-tailed deer to investigate these objectives. Mean level of serum IGF-I during the breeding season was 63.6 ng/ml and was greatest in deer between 2.5 and 5.5 years old (57.4-79.9 ng/ml). Levels of serum IGF-I decreased by approximately 40% as the breeding season progressed, but levels were less in deer following the breeding season (34.6 ng/ml). Both body and antler size were associated positively with IGF-I when controlling for age. Serum testosterone was also associated positively with IGF-I. Levels of serum testosterone during the breeding season generally increased with age from 4.82 (1.5 years old) to 18.79 ng/dl (5.5 years old), but decreased thereafter. These data suggest that IGF-I may be an important hormone in breeding, male white-tailed deer.  相似文献

Amylin is a 37-amino-acid peptide related to CGRP and calcitonin. It is co-secreted with insulin from pancreatic beta-cells. Amylin is deficient with type 1 diabetes mellitus. To study the in vivo effects of amylin in humans, diabetic patients are an adequate model of chronic amylin deficiency. We investigated the effect of a 12 months pramlintide therapy (amylin analogue) on bone metabolism in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. 23 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (age 45.2 +/- 10.3 years, duration of diabetes mellitus 20.7 +/- 9.8 years, 13 male, 10 female) injected themselves 0.1 ml pramlintide, a human amylin analogue, four times per day for a period of 12 months. Bone mineral density measurements of the lumbar spine by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and biochemical markers of bone metabolism (serum-calcium, PTH, osteocalcin, urinary pyridinium cross-links) were obtained before and one year after starting pramlintide therapy. None of the following parameters changed significantly: bone density, serum calcium, PTH, osteocalcin or pyridinium cross-links. Only osteocalcin decreased from 7.205 ng/ml to 5.825 ng/ml, but this change was not statistically significant. We conclude that a one-year pramlintide therapy does not affect bone density or bone metabolism in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus without osteopenia (based on the markers used).  相似文献

A study group of paediatric endocrinologists was established in Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Slovakia in order to investigate various aspects in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Five hundred and ninety-eight patients with CAH who were diagnosed between 1969 and 1998 were included in order to analyze the following questions. Epidemiological data: There were significantly fewer males (43%) than females (57%), and the percentage of males did not increase during the observation period. Salt wasters (SW) totalled 64.7%, whereas 35.3% had simple virilizing (SV) CAH. Diagnosis was established significantly later in boys than in girls (median of 26 vs. 13 days for SW, p < 0.0001; 1,817 vs. 1,010 days for SV, p < 0.03). Mortality in the general population was significantly lower than in CAH siblings (1.8% vs. 7.0%, p < 0.0001) or in SW children (2.2% vs. 11.3%, p < 0.0001). According to our calculation with the present clinical diagnostic criteria in Central Europe, from 40 expected CAH patients/year, 2-2.5 SW, and one female and four male SV patients will not be diagnosed. Auxological data: Growth data from 341 patients were analyzed retrospectively. Percentiles were constructed in a longitudinal/cross-sectional study and pubertal growth was described in a longitudinal analysis. Growth of SW patients was impaired in early childhood (0-3 years), but followed a normal course until puberty. In contrast, SV children had a normal growth pattern during early childhood, but were above the standard thereafter. The pubertal growth spurt was of normal magnitude in boys and girls, but started too early. Final height was reduced compared with both standard and target heights. There was no correlation between final height and age of starting treatment or the year of birth. Bone age was accelerated in both CAH types, but more so in SV patients. Molecular genetics: Three hundred and fifty-six patients were investigated for 11-14 of the most frequent mutations by direct allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and/or PCR followed by sequence-specific oligonucleotide, single strand chain polymorphism and restriction fragment length polymorphism. In the group as a whole, we most frequently found the Intron 2 splice mutation (30.8%) or a deletion/conversion (28.5%). The Intron 2 mutation was most frequent in the Hungarian population, whereas deletions/conversions were found more frequently in Slovenians. The other mutations had a similar distribution to those seen in other populations. Genotype-phenotype correlation confirms previous reports.  相似文献

In this cross-sectional study, plasma levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), delta 4-androstenedione (delta 4) and testosterone (T) were measured by RIA in 232 normal subjects of both sexes, aged 2 weeks to 20 years. The results were analyzed in relation to chronological age, body surface and pubertal stage. High levels of plasma androgens were found in newborn infants of both sexes. After 3 months of age, androgen levels were uniformly low and rose with increasing chronological age and body surface. The first significant increase in mean androgen levels was found for DHEA-S. It occurred after 6 years of age in girls and after 8 years in boys. DHEA and T rose in both sexes after 8 years of age. delta 4 increased steadily with chronological age and body surface in both sexes. When androgen levels were related to body surface, a first significant increase was observed above 1.00 m2 for the four androgens, in both boys and girls. Above 1.20 m2 and 12 years of age, girls had higher mean levels of DHEA-S, DHEA and delta 4, but lower mean T levels than boys of the same body surface and chronological age. Before puberty, a positive correlation was found in both sexes between the plasma androgen levels on the one hand, and both chronological age and body surface on the other. Plasma androgen levels markedly increased at stage P2 in both sexes, and further increased with pubertal development. During puberty, girls had higher plasma delta 4, but lower plasma T levels than boys of the same pubertal stage. Plasma DHEA-S and DHEA levels were similar in both sexes. In contrast to the plasma androgens, plasma cortisol levels did not show any change in relation either to chronological age or to body surface or pubertal development. Body surface appears to be as good a discriminating factor as chronological age, at least in young children. It also appears from this study that DHEA-S is a good guide for the clinical evaluation of adrenal maturation and may be very useful in evaluating patients with growth or pubertal disturbances.  相似文献

In this study, we assessed the potential value of free serum osteocalcin or bone gla protein (BGP), the most abundant non collagenous matrix protein found in bone and dentin, to reflect changes of bone turnover in thoroughbred horses. Levels of osteocalcin were analyzed in serum samples of 54 clinically normal animals divided into three groups (A, B, C) according to age: 8, 16-18 and 24-36 months, in order to determine the standard for young horses of different age and sex. Serum BGP was measured by an in-house developed double antibody radioimmunoassay using bovine antigen. The mean BGP levels (ng/ml) were 45.65 +/- 11.69; 33.65 +/- 16.65; 15.08 +/- 6.70 respectively for groups A, B and C; statistically significant differences were found between groups (A vs B and C; Bvs C). Difference between males and females was found significant in group C with higher values in the females: 18.75 +/- 5.00 against 14.43 +/- 10.47 i n the males. This can be considered a sex related effect on BGP serum levels after the onset of puberty. Correlation coefficient between age and serum BGP for females and males were r 5 20.598 ( P < 0.001) and r 5 200.807 (P < 0.001) respectively. A significant negative linear relationship could be established between these two parameters in males during the growth period. The regression equation between serum BGP and age for males was (month of age = 65.14-1.68. BGP). In the female group the gestation and lactation are variables that lower the correlation coefficient between age and serum BGP levels. These results suggest that serum BGP decreases in thoroughbred horses during the growth period, and significant differences between sexes were found only after the onset of puberty.  相似文献

We tested whether IGFBP-1, a modulator of IGF-I action, would play a role in the pathogenesis of growth failure and metabolic picture of Turner syndrome. Fasting serum levels of IGFBP-1 were assessed in nineteen girls with Turner syndrome (aging 6.5 to 17.2 years) by radioimmunoassay. Our patients showed normal values of IGFBP-1 (mean +/- SD: 68.6 +/- 32.5 micrograms/l, range: 16 to 134 micrograms/l; range for age and pubertal stage-matched normal children: 15 to 180 micrograms/l). IGFBP-1 levels inversely correlated with bone age (p < 0.05), weight (p < 0.001), percentage of ideal body weight (p < 0.002) and body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001). Our results seem to rule out a role of IGFBP-1 in the pathogenesis of growth failure in Turner syndrome. The close inverse relationship between IGFBP-1 levels and BMI suggests the serum concentrations of IGFBP-1 to be regulated by the nutritional status. Due to IGFBP-1 inhibiting action on IGF biological activity, the reduction of IGFBP-1 levels in overweight subjects might represent a mechanism to enhance the IGF insulin-like activity, thus supplementing the insulin action.  相似文献

Age-related changes in bone mineral content and bone biomarkers were assessed over the complete lifespan of female cynomolgus monkeys. The bone mass of the lumbar spine increased linearly from birth to about 2.5 years of age, and this increase gradually slowed thereafter until a peak bone mass was achieved at 9 years of age. The bone mass stabilized after 9 years of age, showing no sign of further reduction with age. In contrast with the significant increase in bone mass before 2.5 years of age, significant decreases occurred in the serum concentrations of the following bone formation markers: intact osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and amino-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, but the serum concentration of carboxy-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen did not change significantly throughout the entire lifespan. Concerning the bone resorption markers, the levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase fluctuated throughout the entire lifespan. The skeleton of an aging female monkey undergoes changes similar to those observed in senescent humans, but did not undergo the menopausal changes seen in women. The use of female cynomolgus monkeys to model human skeletal interventions should therefore be undertaken with consideration of the similarities and differences between cynomolgus monkeys and humans.  相似文献

The serum levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF I), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHAS), testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) have been measured in 78 prepubertal and 57 early pubertal patients referred for short stature, at the same time when their secretion of GH was evaluated both during nocturnal sleep and by two conventional stimulation tests. According to the results of GH measurements they were considered as having a normal secretion of GH (group I), a complete GH deficiency (group II), a partial GH deficiency (group III), low responses to stimuli with normal secretion during sleep (group IV) or a nocturnal neurosecretory dysfunction (group V). Though widely scattered, the IGF I levels showed the following characteristics: a significant increase at puberty from 0.77 to 1.29 U/ml (p less than 0.001) in the so-called endocrinologically normal patients of group I, not in the other groups; in the prepubertal patients of group I, a correlation of IGF I with chronological age (r = 0.47, p less than 0.005) and bone age (r = 0.52, p less than 0.002); significantly reduced IGF I levels in patients of group II having complete GH deficiency (p less than 0.001); no significant differences between prepubertal patients with partial or atypical GH deficiency from groups III, IV, V and prepubertal patients from group I; lower pubertal levels in groups III, IV, V than in pubertal patients from group I (p less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
