Parasites are characteristically aggregated within hosts, but identifying the mechanisms underlying such aggregation can be difficult in wildlife populations. We examined the influence of host age and sex over an annual cycle on the eggs per gram of feces (EPG) of nematode parasites infecting wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) on Yakushima Island. Five species of nematode were recorded from 434 fecal samples collected from an age-structured group of 50 individually recognizable macaques. All parasites exhibited aggregated EPG distributions. The age–infection profiles of all three directly transmitted species (Oesophagostomum aculeatum, Strongyloides fuelleborni, and Trichuris trichiura) exhibited convex curves, but concavity better characterized the age–infection curves of the two trophically transmitted species (Streptopharagus pigmentatus and Gongylonema pulchrum). There was a male bias in EPG and prevalence of infection with directly transmitted species, except in the prevalence of O. aculeatum, and no sex bias in the other parasites. Infection with O. aculeatum showed a female bias in prevalence among young adults, and additional interactions with sex and seasonality show higher EPG values in males during the mating season (fall) but in females during the birth season (spring). These patterns suggest that an immunosuppressive role by reproductive hormones may be regulating direct, but not indirect, life-cycle parasites. Exposure at an early age may trigger an immune response that affects all nematodes, but trophically transmitted species appear to accumulate thereafter. Although it is difficult to discern clear mechanistic explanations for parasite distributions in wildlife populations, it is critical to begin examining these patterns in host species that are increasingly endangered by anthropogenic threats.  相似文献

Exogenous Strongyloides fülleborni were cultured axenically in a variety of media. The best media contained freshly prepared chick embryo extract. Sulfhydryl reducing compounds and a low oxygen-increased carbon dioxide gas phase were required. Only a few individuals developed to adults; males having well-developed gonads, while females had segmented eggs. Other individuals terminated as filariforms and a large number remained as immature rhabditoid larvae. In the second generation, the majority of larvae developed to filariforms, only three becoming females. The nutritional and environmental requirements of the rhabditoid phase are those of a parasite and not of a free-living nematode.  相似文献

A cat excreting Echinococcus multilocularis eggs was recently identified in Hokkaido, representing the first such observation in Japan. The cat was raised free-range and frequently ate rodents. Fecal egg examination revealed eggs of taeniids (EPG: 440) and Spirometra spp. (EPG: > 1000). PCR targeting part of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of E. multilocularis was positive with DNA from 3 single isolated taeniid eggs, and sequence analysis of one amplicon confirmed E. multilocularis. The results indicated that the eggs of E. multilocularis distributed in Hokkaido can be excreted in cat feces, and suggested the necessity of further studies to clarify whether the eggs excreted in cat feces are infective and thus whether cats can serve as infectious source to humans in Japan.  相似文献

An evaluation of the reliability of the Emotions Profile Index (EPI), primate form, was carried out using two captive species of Old World monkeys (Papio hamadryas andMacaca fuscata) and two species (?) of New World monkeys (Saimiri sciureus andS. boliviensis). Observers, some familiar with the animals and some unfamiliar, rated members of the four groups at different times. Inter-rater reliability was high for most members of all species, but only when the observers were familiar with the animals. Assessments remained stable over at least one year.  相似文献

The plasma levels of 26 amino acids and related compounds were determined in five male and five female adult members of each of the two subspecies of Japanese monkeys,Macaca fuscata fuscata andM. f. yakui. Activities of L-asparaginase and histaminase in plasma were also measured.Numerous differences in amino acid levels between the sexes in the subspeciesfuscata were noted, with the female consistently exhibiting lower values. Few differences were observed between the sexes of the subspeciesyakui or between the two subspecies of Japanese monkeys. These monkeys were similar to other previously studied nonhuman primates in exhibiting measurable levels of 3-methylhistidine in plasma. There were numerous quantitative differences among Japanese monkeys and stump-tailed macaques, rhesus monkeys, chimpanzees, and man, with the Japanese monkeys usually exhibiting higher plasma levels.L-asparaginase activity was not detectable in these Japanese monkeys. Histaminase activity was similar to that previously measured in pig-tailed macaques and chimpanzees, lower than that in rhesus monkeys and stump-tailed macaques, and higher than that in man.  相似文献

FemaleAmblyomma americanum [L.] that feed onBos taurus cattle weigh significantly (P=0.05) more (x=505.4 mg) than females that feed onB. indicus x B. taurus cattle (x=450.7 mg) but not females that feed onB. indicus cattle (x=489.7 mg). Females that feed onB. taurus cattle lay more eggs (x=3492) and produce more larvae (x=3243) than females that feed onB. indicus cattle (x=3103 eggs; 2925 larvae) orB. indicus x B. taurus cattle (x=2961 eggs; 2759 larvae). The number of eggs produced per unit engorged female weight is not significantly different in ticks that feed onB. taurus andB. indicus x B. taurus cattle.  相似文献

Mortality of eggs during incubation was estimated for three ocypodid crabs,Scopimera globosa, Ilyoplax pusillus andMacrophthalmus japonicus, and the influence of incubation sites was discussed. These crabs all lived in isolated burrows and fed on sediments during day time low tide.S. globosa andI. pusillus inhabited the upper intertidal sandflats, whereasM. japonicus inhabited the lower intertidal mudflats. Females of bothS. globosa andI. pusillus remained in their plugged burrows without feeding throughout incubation and the mortality of eggs was low despite large broods relative to body size. On the other hand, females ofM. japonicus fed actively on surface mud during incubation and the mortality of eggs was high despiite small broods relative to body size. InS. globosa andI. pusillus, the ovaries of ovigerous females were small until egg-hatching, whereas inM. japonicus, the ovaries grew rapidly during incubation and females were able to produce consecutive broods. I conclude that incubation of eggs in burrows may be advantageous in species which inhabit the upper interidal sandflats, even though the crabs cannot forage during incubation, since otherwise their eggs would be exposed to strong heat stress and desication during the summer. Furthermore, such species may produce few large broods because of less frequent interruption of feeding than that associated with production of many small broods.  相似文献

A coprological survey of gastrointestinal parasites in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), from 14 natural habitats was done. Ova of five nematode species (Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides fuelleborni, Streptopharagus pigmentatus, Oesophagostomum aculeatum, andGongylonema species) and a worm of the cestode species,Bertiella studieri, were detected. Some differences found in rates of infection by sex were observed in the 14 areas. Differences based on age were found in only troops in which the infection rates ofStrongyloides fuelleborni, Streptopharagus pigmentatus, andTrichuris trichiura were higher in the juvenile monkeys. The number of parasite species was related to the geographical and climatic conditions of the habitat of the troop: troops living in areas cold in winter were infected by fewer parasite species than those in southern warmer areas.  相似文献

We compared a group of mice given multiple oral doses of praziquantel (PZQ) on 1 day 7 weeks after infection with Schistosoma japonicum and another group given multiple doses of PZQ over 2 days (7 and 9 weeks after infection) by examining the number of schistosome eggs and oograms in their tissues and feces. In the 1-day-protocol group (4 x 100 mg/kg x 1 day), calcified dead eggs or shells accounted for 77.4 and 70.1% of the total EPG (the total number of immature eggs, mature eggs, and calcified eggs and shells per 1 g tissue) in the liver and small intestine, respectively, 11 weeks after infection. Shells accounted for nearly half of the total EPG (54.3% liver and 46.6% small intestine). Mature eggs accounted for 8.4% (liver) and 5.1% (small intestine) of the total EPG. Only shells were found in the feces. In the 2-day-protocol group (4 x 100 mg/kg x 2 days, 2 weeks apart), dead eggs accounted for 87.2 and 89.5% of the total EPG in the liver and small intestine, respectively, 11 weeks after infection. Shells accounted for 62.5% (liver) and 75.8% (small intestine) of the total EPG. In the 2-day group, mature eggs accounted for 0.9% (liver) and 0.6% (small intestine) of the total EPG. In liver and small intestine, the EPG of immature and mature eggs in the 2-day group was significantly smaller than in the 1-day group. Especially, the tendency was clear in the case of the EPG of mature eggs. There were no schistosome eggs in the feces of the 2-day group. We found that administration of PZQ over 2 days separated by a 2-week interval was effective against S. japonicum.  相似文献

A cohort was established for evaluation of cancer risk factors in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. As one of the cohort studies, stools of 947 residents (403 males and 544 females, age range: 29-86 years) were screened for Clonorchis sinensis eggs using both Kato-Katz method and formalin-ether sedimentation technique. The overall egg positive rate of C. sinensis was 37.7% and individual EPG (eggs per gram of feces) counts ranged from 24 to 28,800. Eight egg positive residents voluntarily joined a process of collection of the passed worms after praziquantel treatment. A total of 158 worms were recovered from 5 of the 8 treated persons, ranged from 3 to 108 in each individual. The worms were 15-20 mm x 2-3 mm in size, and showed brown-pigmented, red, or white body colors. This is the first collection record of C. sinensis adult worms from humans through anthelmintic treatment and purgation. The adult worms of C. sinensis may be paralyzed by praziquantel and then discharged passively through bile flow in the bile duct and by peristaltic movement of the bowel.  相似文献

Seed dispersal by Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata yakui) via cheek-pouch was studied in a warm temperate evergreen forest on Yakushima Island. Plant list was compiled based on a study during 1986–1995, of which troops of monkeys have been habituated without artificial feeding. We followed the well-habituated monkeys in 1993 and 1994 to observe the feeding behavior and their treatments of fruits and seeds, and collected seeds dispersed by monkeys to record the distance carried from the mother trees. We checked the difference of germination ratio between seeds dispersed via cheek-pouch and seeds taken from mother trees by sowing experiments. Seeds and acorns of 22 species were observed to be dispersed via cheek-pouch of monkeys. Among them, three species with acorns were never dispersed via feces, and 15 species with drupes were seldom dispersed via feces. Plant species of which seeds are dispersed only via cheek-pouch had larger seeds than those of dispersed both via cheek-pouch and via feces, and typically had only one or two seeds in a fruit. As for one of cheek-pouch dispersal species,Persea thunbergii, the mean distance when seeds were carried from the mother trees via cheek-pouch was 19.7 m, and the maximum distance was as long as 105 m although more than 80% of seeds were dispersed within 30 m from mother trees. And 82% of seeds dispersed via cheek-pouch germinated. The easy separation of seeds from other parts of the fruit seems to facilitate cheek-pouch dispersal more than dispersal via feces. Cheek-pouch dispersal by monkeys has possibly enhanced the natural selection for larger seeds which bring forth larger seedlings with high shade-tolerance. In conclusion, cheek-pouch dispersal by monkeys is quite an important mode for trees in the mature stand in a warm temperate evergreen forest on Yakushima Island.  相似文献

The effects ofOstrinia nubilalis(Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs andAcyrthosiphon pisum(Harris) (Homoptera: Aphididae), when provided as single prey species and in combination, on life history characteristics ofColeomegilla maculataDeGeer (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) larvae and adults were quantified. Preimaginal development was not influenced by the larval prey regime; development at 26 ± 1°C was completed in approximately 13.5 days onO. nubilaliseggs,A. pisum,orA. pisumalternated daily withO. nubilaliseggs. The resulting adults weighed 13.0, 10.7, and 12.5 mg when reared onO. nubilaliseggs,A. pisum, andA. pisumalternated daily withO. nubilaliseggs, respectively. Eighteen percent of the individuals died when reared onA. pisum,28% died when reared onO. nubilaliseggs, and 22% died when fedA. pisumalternated daily withO. nubilaliseggs. Seven adult diet combinations, based on diet regimes of larvae and adults, did not cause significant differences in preoviposition period, interoviposition period, and the number of days on which eggs were laid. Total fecundity was influenced both by larval and adult diet. The diet that resulted in highly fecund females wasA. pisumalternated daily withO. nubilaliseggs for larvae andO. nubilaliseggs for adults. FemaleC. maculatafedO. nubilaliseggs had the highest intrinsic rate of increase and net reproductive rate.  相似文献

The geographic distributions of many generalist herbivores differ from those of their host plants, such that they experience coarse-grained spatial variation in natural selection on characters influencing adaptation to host plants. Thus, populations differing in host use are expected to differ in their ability to survive and grow on these host plants. We examine host-associated variation in larval performance (survivorship, development time, and adult body weight) and oviposition preference, within and between two populations ofStator limbatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) that differ in the hosts available to them in nature. In one population,Acacia greggii (Fabaceae: Mimosoideae) andCercidium microphyllum (Fabaceae: Caesalpininoideae) are each abundant, while in the second population onlyC. floridum andC. microphyllum are present. In both populations, egg-to-adult survivorship was less than 50% onC. floridum, while survivorship was greater than 90% onA. greggii. Most of the mortality onC. floridum occurred as larvae were burrowing through the seed coat; very low mortality occurred during penetration of the seed coat ofA. greggii. Significant variation was present between populations, and among families (within populations), in survivorship and egg-to-adult development time onC. floridum; beetles restricted toCercidium in nature, without access toC. floridum, survived better and developed faster onC. floridum than beetles that had access toA. greggii. Large host effects on body size were detected for female offspring: females reared onA. greggii were larger than those reared onC. floridum, whereas male offspring wee approximately the same size regardless of rearing host. Trade-offs between performance onC. floridum andC. floridum were not detected in this experiment. Instead, our data indicate that development time and survivorship onC. floridum may be largely independent of development time and survivorship onA. greggii. Patterns of oviposition preference corresponded to the observed patterns of host suitability: in laboratory preference tests, beetles with access toA. greggii in nature tended to prefer this host more than beetles without access to this host in nature.  相似文献

An adult female Japanese monkey was chosen as a focal animal in order to assess the nutritional condition of the species during winter on Kinkazan Island, which is covered by deciduous forest of the cool temperate zone. Five whole-day-long observations were performed at the end of November (late autumn) and also at the end of February (late winter). In November, the daily energy intake and protein intake were estimated to be 1,449 kcal and 36 g, respectively: both satisfied the intake requirement even in view of a digestibility of 55%. These findings suggest that the focal animal could accumulate body fat in November. In contrast, in February, the daily energy intake and protein intake were estimated to be 556 kcal and 12 g, respectively: both did not satisfy the intake requirement in view of a digestibility of 55%. These findings suggest that the focal animal consumed accumulated body fat in February. Various data for food intake, nutritional content, etc. on Kinkazan were compared with those on Koshima, which is covered by evergreen forest of the warm temperate zone. The nutritional intake in February on Kinkazan was much smaller than that in November on Kinkazan as well as those in November and February on Koshima. The small intake of the former appeared to be strongly influenced by the sign ficantly lower speed of dry weight intake, which derived partly from the significantly lighter unit weight of the food items (e.g., buds ofZanthoxylum piperitum, Castanea crenata, andCornus macrophylla; leaves and stems ofOplismenus uadulatifolius andZoysia japonica). The monkeys on Kinkazan Island increased their food diversity, shortened their daily travel distance, and avoided repeated use of sites within their home range to offset the deterioration of the food quality in February.

Summary The effectiveness of a strain ofTrichogramma evanescens Westw. especially adapted to the European corn borerOstrinia nubilalis Hübner was examined in 4 field experiments. The parasites were reared on either the Angoumois grain mothSitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) or the Mediterranean flour mothEphestia kuehniella Zell. and were released in separate experimental plots by attaching egg cards, each containing about 1000 parasitized host eggs, to corn leaves at distances of 14 meters in the field. FourTrichogramma treatments at 1 week intervals using 45000 parasites per hectar per treatment resulted in high parasitization rates ofO. nubilalis-eggs and large reductions in larval damage. In experimental plots whereT. evanescens, reared onS. cerealella-eggs, were released, the parasitization rates ofO. nubilalis-eggs varied between 81,7 and 82,3%, compared with 63,0 and 84,3% forT. evanescens reared onE. kuehniella. The reduction inO. nubilalis larval infestation at the harvest in the treated plots, compared to untreated controls varied between 75,5 and 94,8% forT. evanescens that was reared onS. cerealella, compared with 77,6 and 89,8% forT. evanescens that was reared onE. kuehniella. There were no significant differences in efficiency between the two tested methods of rearingTrichogramma.

Summary D. alboannulatus (Ratz) is a frequent parasite ofP. flammea Schiff. andB. piniarius (L.); its mass production in the laboratory was therefore investigated. The species is not very specialized. It could be bred in the pupae of 10 species of lepidoptera, 4 of which were not yet known from literature. The adult life may be prolonged by low temperatures without loss of viability; a female deposits under favourable conditions about 190 eggs; the development is completed in 18 days at 27,2°C. All these properties facilitate the mass production of the parasite in the laboratory and its possible use for biological control.

Oral inoculation of BALB/c mice with infective larvae of Heligmosomoides polygyrus resulted in chronic infection characterized by the release of parasite eggs in the feces for several months. The actual number of eggs per gram of feces was dependent on the dose of the inoculum. Serum IgE in infected mice peaked at a level of greater than 70 micrograms/ml during Weeks 3 through 6 following inoculation, and high levels of IgE (greater than 40 micrograms/ml) persisted for over 14 weeks. Protective immune responses resulted in reduced egg production and the development of markedly fewer adult worms in the small intestines following a challenge inoculation. The role of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in these responses was examined by depletion in vivo of either T cell subpopulation with rat mAb specific for the appropriate determinants. Mice treated with anti-CD4 during a primary infection had increased EPG which was due primarily to an increase in worm fecundity (eggs produced per adult female). A challenge inoculation of mice that had been cleared of the primary infection with an anthelmintic drug induced a protective response that reduced development of new adult worms by 70-80% and their fecundity by greater than 90%. This protective response was abrogated by injection of mice with anti-CD4. Serum IgE diminished when adult worms were removed after anthelmintic treatment. A more precipitous drop in serum IgE followed successive treatments of mice with an anthelmintic and anti-CD4. In addition, the anamnestic serum IgE response to a challenge inoculation was reduced by over 80% in anti-CD4-treated mice. Anti-CD8 treatment had no appreciable effect on the immunological or parasitological parameters measured following a challenge inoculation with H. polygyrus. Thus, CD4+ T cells regulate host protective immunity, worm fecundity, and IgE levels in an H. polygyrus infection. This experimental system may be particularly suitable for analysis of chronic nematode infections of humans and livestock because of the responsiveness of the parasite in vivo to changes in host immune function.  相似文献

Background

According to targeted treatment (TT), the whole flock is dewormed based on knowledge of the risk, or parameters that quantify the mean level of infection, whereas according to targeted selective treatment (TST), only individual animals within the grazing group are treated, based on parasitological, production and/or morbidity parameters. The aim of this study was to compare two different treatment protocols on sheep farms in Lithuania. The study was conducted from 15 April to 31 October 2014 on three sheep farms. On the TT (the whole flock) and T(S)T (with FECs ≥ 300, respectively) farms all adult animals were treated orally with fenbendazole irrespective of EPG counts before the grazing season. The second treatment was applied with injectable ivermectin on both farms. However, on the TT farm all sheep were also treated on 2nd August regardless of their EPG counts, while on the T(S)T farm only those animals with an EPG ≥ 300 were treated on 1 July using a threshold of ≥ 300 EPG. No treatments were administered on the control farm (n = 1) during the study.

Results

Spring treatment of ewes significantly reduced nematode faecal egg counts (FEC) both on the TT and T(S)T farms, with the benefit of lowering pasture contamination with infective L3 stage larvae at the start of grazing season, while it remained significantly higher on the control farm. The positive effect of the spring treatment of ewes was reflected by increased body weight gains (BWG) in lambs in the first half of the grazing season. Following the second treatment, the weight gains in lambs on the T(S)T farm were higher compared to lambs on the TT farm, while BWG in the control lambs started to decrease. The difference was also substantiated by the body condition scores (BCS) and dag scores (DS) of lambs, which were highest on the T(S)T farm compared with those on the control and TT farms.

Conclusions

The results of this study show that both treatment strategies were useful in reducing clinical effects (BCS and DS) of gastrointestinal nematode parasitism and increasing the performance in lambs. Furthermore, on the T(S)T farm some of animals were left in refugia, helping to slow down the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in future.

Studies on the life history and food habit ofTyphlodromus bambusae Ehara were carried out under aboratory conditions of 25±1°C, 60–80%rh and 159l:d.The egg-to-egg period of the predator which fed on eggs of the long-seta form ofSchizotetranychus celarius (Banks) was longer than those of the three phytoseiid species,Amblyseius eharai Amitai et Swirski,A. longispinosus (Evans) andA. paraki Ehara, which fed onTetranychus urticae Koch. The sex-ratio ofT. bambusae was not significantly different from those of the other three species. The long ovipositional period and the rather constant, low, reproductive rate observed inT. bambusae were remarkable. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) ofT. bambusae was 0.164 per day and it was very similar to ther m of its prey,S. celarius. This observation supports the idea that there is a coincidence between the life-histories of spider-mite prey and their specific phytoseiid predators.Although females ofT. bambusae could feed on eggs ofAponychus corpuzae Rimando orSchizotetranychus recki Ehara which cohabit withS. celarius onSasa bamboo, their oviposition rate was lower than that onS. celarius eggs.Schizotetranychus celarius is thought to be a profitable prey species forT. bambusae, whileS. recki andA. corpuzae are only subsidiary, or alternative, prey.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies were conducted in the Lake Langano area in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia to determine the occurrence of schistosomiasis and assess factors involved in its transmission. Microscopic examination of faecal specimens from free ranging Papio anubis (anubis baboon) troops from Bishan Gari and Burka Dita forest reserves revealed Schistosoma mansoni eggs with a prevalence of 12.1% (11/91) and 26.2%(34/130), respectively. The eggs were viable as confirmed by miracidial hatching and infectivity tests. Out of the total 12 communities (three schools, five villages and one herdsmen community) surveyed for schistosomiasis around Lake Langano, individuals excreting S. mansoni eggs were found in nine communities with prevalence of infection ranging from 1.4 to 43%. The intensity of infection ranged from 24 EPG (eggs per gram of faeces) to 243 EPG. Excretion of viable eggs by the baboons indicate that they play a role in maintenance of S. mansoni infection in the locality. The detection of S. mansoni eggs in young children, collection of cercarial-infected Biomphalaria pfeifferi in water bodies, and establishment of S. mansoni infection in lab-bred mice have confirmed establishment of transmission foci in Kime area, south-east of Lake Langano. However, the lake itself does not seem to support transmission of schistosomiasis since no snails were found along the shore of the Lake. Further investigations are indicated to fully elucidate the role baboons play in the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia. The risk of introduction of water-based development projects in these new endemic foci in relation to S. mansoni infection in the baboons is discussed.  相似文献
