Many fish, including the fighting fish Betta splendens , perform a display in which the opercula are extended away from the head and gills. Previous work has shown that opercular display rates by male B. splendens decrease under conditions of reduced dissolved oxygen (hypoxia). We tested the hypothesis that the ability to maintain opercular display rates under hypoxic conditions is related to body condition in male B. splendens . We also tested the hypothesis that females would show a greater preference for males performing this display under hypoxic conditions, when the display should be a more reliable indicator of male phenotypic quality. We found no evidence to support either hypothesis. Male opercular display rate in hypoxic conditions was unrelated to natural or experimentally induced variation in body condition. Female B. splendens showed no differential preference for the opercular display, assessed through the use of computer animated male stimuli, in either acute or chronic hypoxia. We conclude that the presence of an air-breathing organ in this species makes the opercular display an unreliable signal of male quality as measured by body condition.  相似文献

Multimodal communication is essential in social interactions in cichlid fish, including conspecifics’ recognition, agonistic interactions and courtship behaviour. Computer-manipulated image stimuli and sound playback offer powerful tools to assess the relative relevance of visual and acoustic stimuli in fish behavioural studies, but these techniques require validation for each taxon. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus responds to computer-manipulated visual stimuli and acoustic playback. Six experiments were conducted: computer animation playback, video playback, interaction with a mirror, presentation of a live male in a jar alone and combined with courting sound playback or with white noise playback. Individual agonistic interactions (lateral displays, up and down swimming, butting) and courting behaviours (tilting leading, digging) were tallied for each experiment. Our results suggest that non-interactive computer-manipulated visual stimuli is not a suitable tool in behavioural research with Mozambique tilapia. In contrast, interaction with a live male in a jar seems to remain the best visual research instrument inducing significant strong behavioural responses. Although none or only a few agonistic interactions were observed towards video playbacks or computer animations, such interactions significantly increased towards a male in jar and were modulated by courtship sound playback, suggesting the additional relevance of sound playback as a tool in behavioural research with Mozambique tilapia, including the study of multimodal signalling.  相似文献

Video playback is being increasingly used as a technique for behavioural research. The importance of critically evaluating the effectiveness of video playback is clear, as available video technology is not designed for nonhuman visual systems. We discuss several aspects concerning the perception of video images that could lead to inconclusive or erroneous results. Researchers should verify that behaviour observed in response to video playback is comparable to behaviour observed in response to live animals. We conducted such a verification using live and video playback methods to measure female response to swords of varying lengths in the green swordtail, Xiphophorus helleri. Using both methods, female response appeared to be an increasing function of male sword length. Females did not differ in their response to live and video versions of noncourting, noninteractive males, however, females tended to prefer video playbacks of males with longer swords, a result that has also been found in experiments using live males. These results suggest that females express the same qualitative mating preference, but not necessarily the same quantitative preference, for sword length when viewing video stimuli. Several methodological factors that may contribute to an apparent difference in the strength of the preference are discussed. Despite these differences, both methods produced comparable results; female response to sworded males tended to increase as sword length increased. These experiments demonstrate that video playback is an effective method to measure female preferences accurately in X. helleri and provide an example of how video playback can be evaluated in other species. Java sparrows were exposed to a mirror and a frosted mirror, a mirror and a live bird, a mirror and a live bird with frosted screen, a closed circuit TV monitor and a TV program or the closed circuit monitor and an upside down monitor. The birds showed strong preference for the self-image on the mirror, the live bird and the self-image on the monitor. They preferred almost equally to the mirror and the frosted live bird. These results suggest that the Java sparrows saw the self-image on the mirror as conspecific image.  相似文献

Zebrafish are gaining momentum as a laboratory animal species for the study of anxiety-related disorders in translational research, whereby they serve a fundamental complement to laboratory rodents. Several anxiety-related behavioral paradigms, which rest upon the presentation of live predatorial stimuli, may yield inconsistent results due to fatigue, habituation, or idiosyncratic responses exhibited by the stimulus itself. To overcome these limitations, we designed and manufactured a fully controllable robot inspired by a natural aquatic predator (Indian leaf fish, Nandus nandus) of zebrafish. We report that this robot elicits aversive antipredatorial reactions in a preference test and that data obtained therein correlate with data observed in traditional anxiety- and fear-related tests (light/dark preference and shelter-seeking). Finally, ethanol administration (0.25; 0.50; 1.00%) exerts anxiolytic effects, thus supporting the view that robotic stimuli can be used in the analysis of anxiety-related behaviors in zebrafish.  相似文献

This study explored whether load auditory stimuli could be used as functional punishing stimuli in place of electric shock. Three experiments examined the effect of a loud auditory stimulus on rats’ responding maintained by a concurrent reinforcement schedule. In Experiment 1, overall response rate decreased when a concurrent 1.5 s tone presentation schedule was superimposed on the concurrent variable interval (VI) 180-s, VI 180-s reinforcement schedule. On the contrary, response rate increased when a click presentation schedule was added. In Experiment 2, the extent of the response suppression with a 1.5 s tone presentation varied as a function of the frequency of the reinforcement schedule maintaining responses; the leaner the schedule employed, the greater the response suppression. In Experiment 3, response suppression was observed to be inversely related to the duration of the tone; response facilitation was observed when a 3.0-s tone was used. In Experiments 1 and 2, a preference shift towards the alternative with richer reinforcement was observed when the tone schedule was added. In contrast, the preference shifted towards the leaner alternative when the click or longer duration stimulus was used. These results imply that both the type and duration of a loud auditory stimulus, as well as the reinforcement schedule maintaining responses, have a critical role in determining the effect of the stimuli on responding. They also suggest that a loud auditory stimulus can be used as a positive punisher in a choice situation for rats, when the duration of the tone is brief, and the reinforcement schedule maintaining responses is lean.  相似文献

The Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, is an all-female species that reproduces by gynogenesis, i.e., it relies on sperm of males of closely related species to trigger embryogenesis. Sperm is supplied by males of P. latipinna and P. mexicana. Amazon mollies live in sympatry with at least one of these species, a few populations live in sympatry with two sperm-donor species. As P. formosa is sperm dependent, it needs mechanisms for species and mate recognition. To investigate the effect of rearing conditions on sexual preferences of Amazon mollies, we raised Amazon mollies in sympatry with P. latipinna and P. mexicana males. We used simultaneous choice tests to determine the effect of age on female sexual preferences. Immature Amazon mollies do not exhibit a preference if given a choice between a P. latipinna and a P. mexicana male, whereas adult P. formosa do have a preference for the P. latipinna male. We used two different stimuli in this study, live males and videotapes of males.  相似文献

Animals often use different sensory systems to assess different sexually selected signals from potential mates. However, the relative importance of different signals on mate choice is not well understood in many animal species. In this study, we examined the relative importance of male olfactory and visual cues on female preference in the guppy Poecilia reticulata. We used digitally modified male images to standardize visual stimuli. We found that, regardless of whether females were presented without male visual stimuli or with identical male visual stimuli, they preferred stimuli with the odor of males to those without. However, when females were allowed to choose between dull male visual stimuli with male odor, and brightly colored male visual stimuli without male odor, there was no clear preference for either. Some females preferred the dull male visual stimuli with male odor, whereas some other females preferred the brightly colored male visual stimuli without male odor. These results indicate that the relative importance of olfactory and visual cues in female mate preference varied between individuals.  相似文献

Facial preference that results from the processing of facial information plays an important role in social interactions as well as the selection of a mate, friend, candidate, or favorite actor. However, it still remains elusive which brain regions are implicated in the neural mechanisms underlying facial preference, and how neural activities in these regions are modulated during the formation of facial preference. In the present study, we investigated the modulation of electroencephalography (EEG) oscillatory power with facial preference. For the reliable assessments of facial preference, we designed a series of passive viewing and active choice tasks. In the former task, twenty-four face stimuli were passively viewed by participants for multiple times in random order. In the latter task, the same stimuli were then evaluated by participants for their facial preference judgments. In both tasks, significant differences between the preferred and non-preferred faces groups were found in alpha band power (8–13 Hz) but not in other frequency bands. The preferred faces generated more decreases in alpha power. During the passive viewing task, significant differences in alpha power between the preferred and non-preferred face groups were observed at the left frontal regions in the early (0.15–0.4 s) period during the 1-s presentation. By contrast, during the active choice task when participants consecutively watched the first and second face for 1 s and then selected the preferred one, an alpha power difference was found for the late (0.65–0.8 s) period over the whole brain during the first face presentation and over the posterior regions during the second face presentation. These results demonstrate that the modulation of alpha activity by facial preference is a top-down process, which requires additional cognitive resources to facilitate information processing of the preferred faces that capture more visual attention than the non-preferred faces.  相似文献

Data from several field studies support the hypothesis that female European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, attend to variation among the songs of conspecific males when making mate-choice decisions. However, for a variety of methodological reasons, direct evidence for female preferences based on song in starlings has been lacking. This study presents a novel technique for assaying directly female preference and choice in European starlings by using the presentation of conspecific male song as an operant reinforcer in a controlled environment. Using an apparatus in which the playback of songs from different nestboxes is under the operant control of the subject, we demonstrate how the reinforcing properties of conspecific song can be used to measure female preference and choice. The results of the study suggest three conclusions. First, female starlings prefer naturally ordered conspecific male songs over reversed songs. Second, female starlings display robust preferences for longer compared with shorter male song bouts. Behaviour in the operant apparatus varied directly with male song bout length. Third, preferences based on song bout length are sex specific. Male starlings failed to respond differentially to the same stimuli for which females showed strong preferences. These results suggest that male-male variation in song bout length is important for mate choice among starlings. In addition, we detail the use of a novel behavioural assay for measuring female preferences that can be applied to similar behaviours in other species of songbirds. Minnows Phoxinus phoxinus did not show any difference in the average distance from a predator associated with the left or right position of a shoal-mate. While inspection behaviour of fish tested with a mirror on their left side was indistinguishable from the behaviour of controls tested without a mirror, inspection behaviour of fish tested with the mirror on their right side appeared to be changed and incoherent in both temporal and spatial parameters. These results suggest that, as in mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki , the condition with the mirror on the left provided the best arrangement of monocular lateral stimulation in which each stimulus fell into the correct lateral visual field. Minnows showed a significant left eye preference during scrutiny of their mirror image when tested in the absence of any predator and a significant right eye preference while monitoring a live predator in the absence of a social partner.  相似文献

Abstract Complete dichogamy occurs when temporal separation prevents any overlap in male and female function within and among flowers of one or more inflorescences. Although dichogamy may increase outcrossing and prevent inbreeding, it also results in the presentation of inflorescences with different floral resources. Pollinators may prefer one gender over the other based on these differences, which can reduce the transfer of pollen to conspecific stigmas and reduce floral resources for effective pollinators. We investigated whether the insect visitors of Trachymene incisa (Apiaceae), an Australian herb demonstrating complete protandry at the umbel level, show a preference for male or female umbels. The male phase umbels present pollen and nectar, whereas the female phase umbels offer nectar only. Therefore, we expect pollen‐collecting insects to favour male umbels, whereas insects that forage only for nectar will favour female umbels. In natural patches that exhibited a male umbel bias, insects showed a preference for male phase umbels at Agnes Banks in 2003 and at Myall Lakes in both 2003 and 2004. By contrast, insects showed no preference for umbel phases, visiting umbels at a similar frequency to which they occurred, at Agnes Banks in 2004 and at Tomago in both 2003 and 2004. This suggests spatial and temporal variation in insect preferences for umbel phases that differ in floral rewards. In experimental arrays where the umbel gender ratio was equal, there were no significant differences between male and female umbels in terms of insect visitation during a foraging trip and mean foraging time per visit. The differing patterns of preference may be due to a differential response by insects when the umbel ratios vary, where a male bias in umbel genders leads to a preference for male umbels, whereas an equal umbel gender ratio leads to equal visitation to male and female phase umbels.  相似文献

Female green swordtails, Xiphophorus helleri, possess a preference for the multicomponent male sword. Previous work suggests that this female preference is a result of a pre-existing receiver bias favouring a sword and has contributed to sword evolution via intersexual selection. We use video presentations to investigate how females respond to components of this composite trait. Complete swords in this species have at least four individual components. Based on female response to video stimuli depicting males with intact swords and males in which sword components were digitally manipulated, it appears that males possessing complete swords elicit the strongest female response. Additionally, we found that females prefer stimuli with black sword coloration to those lacking black coloration. The results suggest that multiple components of the sword stimulate females, and that these components operate in conjunction to make the sword structure more attractive to females.  相似文献

Songbirds produce calls as well as song. This paper summarizes four studies of the zebra finch long call, used by both sexes in similar behavioral contexts. Female long calls are acoustically simpler than male long calls, which include acoustic features learned during development. Production of these male-typical features requires an intact nucleus robustus archistriatalis, the sexually-dimorphic source of the telencephalic projection to brainstem vocal effectors. In experiments that quantified the long calls produced in response to long call playbacks, intact adult zebra finch males, but not females, show a categorical preference for the long calls of females over those of males. Experiments with synthetic stimuli showed that males classify long call stimuli that they hear by gender, using both spectral and temporal information, but that females use only temporal information. Juvenile males (<45 days) did not show the categorical preference, but it emerged during the same period when the robustus archistriatalis matures anatomically and the first male-typical vocalizations are produced. Adult males with robustus archistriatalis lesions lost the categorical preference for female long calls, suggesting that the robustus archistriatalis plays a role in long call discrimination. These results demonstrate that calls complement song as a potent tool for studying the neurobiology of vocal communication.  相似文献

Colours are common stimuli in signalling systems. Requirements to function well as a signal sometimes conflict between different signallers, and the same colour stimulus is used to convey completely different messages to the same receiver. Fruits and aposematic insects both use red coloration as a signal, in the former case to signal profitability and in the latter case as a warning signal. In two experiments, we investigated whether the domestic chick, an omnivorous predator, differed in its unconditioned preference or avoidance of red and green stimuli depending on whether or not the stimulus was an insect. The experiments were designed as preference tests between red and green painted prey. The prey were live insects and artificial fruits (experiment 1), and, to investigate the effect of movement, live and dead insects (experiment 2). The chicks did not show any difference in pecking preference between red and green when fruit-like stimuli were used, but when the prey were insects, green prey were strongly preferred to red prey, and prey movement did not affect this bias. Thus, young chicks may recognize prey as insects and then discriminate between different prey colorations, or one type of food may elicit an unlearned colour preference-avoidance response that is absent with another type of food.  相似文献

It was reported recently that male mice lacking brain serotonin (5-HT) lose their preference for females (Liu et al., 2011, Nature, 472, 95–100), suggesting a role for 5-HT signaling in sexual preference. Regulation of sex preference by 5-HT lies outside of the well established roles in this behavior established for the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and the main olfactory epithelium (MOE). Presently, mice with a null mutation in the gene for tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), which are depleted of brain 5-HT, were tested for sexual preference. When presented with inanimate (urine scents from male or estrous female) or animate (male or female mouse in estrus) sexual stimuli, TPH2-/- males show a clear preference for female over male stimuli. When a TPH2-/- male is offered the simultaneous choice between an estrous female and a male mouse, no sexual preference is expressed. However, when confounding behaviors that are seen among 3 mice in the same cage are controlled, TPH2-/- mice, like their TPH2+/+ counterparts, express a clear preference for female mice. Female TPH2-/- mice are preferred by males over TPH2+/+ females but this does not lead to increased pregnancy success. In fact, if one or both partners in a mating pair are TPH2-/- in genotype, pregnancy success rates are significantly decreased. Finally, expression of the VNO-specific cation channel TRPC2 and of CNGA2 in the MOE of TPH2-/- mice is normal, consistent with behavioral findings that sexual preference of TPH2-/- males for females is intact. In conclusion, 5-HT signaling in brain does not determine sexual preference in male mice. The use of pharmacological agents that are non-selective for the 5-HT neuronal system and that have serious adverse effects may have contributed historically to the stance that 5-HT regulates sexual behavior, including sex partner preference.  相似文献

The effects of wall color stimuli on diving, and the effects of depth stimuli on scototaxis, were assessed in zebrafish. Three groups of fish were confined to a black, a white, or a transparent tank, and tested for depth preference. Two groups of fish were confined to a deep or a shallow tank, and tested for black-white preference. As predicted, fish preferred the deep half of a split-tank over the shallow half, and preferred the black half of a black/white tank over the white half. Results indicated that the tank wall color significantly affected depth preference, with the transparent tank producing the strongest depth preference and the black tank producing the weakest preference. Tank depth, however, did not significantly affect color preference. Additionally, wall color significantly affected shuttling and immobility, while depth significantly affected shuttling and thigmotaxis. These results are consistent with previous indications that the diving response and scototaxis may reflect dissociable mechanisms of behavior. We conclude that the two tests are complementary rather than interchangeable, and that further research on the motivational systems underlying behavior in each of the two tests is needed.  相似文献

In mice, male-typical preference for female olfactory cues results largely from sexually differentiated testosterone production. It is currently unclear on which cells and tissues testosterone acts to produce male-typical preference for female olfactory cues. To further address the site of androgen action on olfactory preference, we have developed a loxP-based transgenic mouse that overexpresses androgen receptors (AR) only when activated by Cre. We used this transgene to overexpress AR globally in all tissues using a CMV-Cre driver and a Nestin-Cre driver to overexpress AR selectively in neural tissue. We then examined olfactory preference in transgenic and wildtype (Wt) littermates by simultaneously exposing animals to female-soiled, male-soiled and clean bedding. Ubiquitous overexpression of AR in CMV-AR mice increased preference for male bedding, whereas neural-specific AR overexpression in Nestin-AR transgenic mice did not differ from wildtype siblings in olfactory preference. Neural activation of olfactory brain areas in response to female-soiled bedding was also evaluated in these mice by measuring FOS immunoreactivity. This revealed a decrease in neural activity along the accessory olfactory pathway that accompanied the decrease in preference for female odors in CMV-AR males, compared to both Nestin-AR and Wt male siblings. Together, results indicate that androgens act via non-neural AR to mediate olfactory preference and neural responses to olfactory stimuli, and further suggest that AR in non-neural tissues can promote androphilic odor preferences in male mice.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the temporal performance of Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) given short-term exposure to four fixed interval (FI) schedules of reinforcement, FI 30, 60, 120, and 240 s, during which a reinforcer (mirror image) was given for the first response (swimming through a hoop) after the interval requirement had elapsed. Response levels were generally low early in an interval and increased as the interval elapsed; wait times and break points in an interval increased with increases in the FI requirement. The results were similar to that obtained with other species and different types of responses and reinforcers, and demonstrate that the procedure is a feasible method for studying interval timing in fish.  相似文献

Calopteryx splendens males exhibit a remarkable variation in wing pigmentation both within and between populations. In this study, we examined whether the wingspots of male C. splendens are related to male quality. We measured the nylon implant encapsulation rate for 85 males and found that males with larger wingspots had a faster encapsulation rate, indicating a better immunocompetence. We also found that the encapsulation rate was positively correlated with the density of haemocytes in the haemolymph. Another measurement of male quality, fluctuating asymmetry of wingspots, correlated negatively with the size of the wingspots. Males with asymmetrical wingspots also had lower encapsulation rates than more symmetrical males. Our results suggest that the size of wingspot is an indicator of male quality in C. splendens.  相似文献
