Anchialine podocopid Ostracoda of the Galapagos Islands   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Water-filled fissures and lava tubes on Isla Santa Cruz and Isla Isabela provide anchialine habitats for 11 species of podocopid and platycopid Ostracoda, most with Atlantic and West Indian affinities. Their ancestors may have been carried to earlier islands in the Galapagos system by trans-Isthmian currents, on vegetation or larger animals, or by migrating waterfowl. None are derived from present-day Pacific coastal faunas of North, Central or South America. Two species of Cytheracea, a new species of Anchistrocheles (Bairdiacea), and one of Cytherella (Platycopida) are described.  相似文献

Iliffeoecia iliffei and Kareloecia woutersi are new argilloeciine and propontocyprididine genera and species from anchialine habitats in Galapagos Islands, whose specializations for interstitial or cryptic life show convergence with Comontocypris. Ekponlocypris, Schedopontocypris and the new genus Thomontocypris are removed from Propontocypris. Eighty-three living species of Pontocyprididae, for which the soft anatomy has been described, provide the basis for emended generic diagnoses and a revised classification.  相似文献

Marine algae collected from rock pools on Hood, Fernandina and Mosquera, in the Galapagos Islands, have provided a fauna of 26 ostracod species of which 14 are new. One genus, belonging to the Hemicytheridae, is also new and appears to be endemic to the Islands. From two littoral algal samples collected from Punta Canoa and San Pedro beach, Ecuador, an assemblage of some nine species, four of which are new, is also described. Two ostracods: Touroconcha lapidiscola and Loxoconcha (Lox-ocorniculum) lenticuloides , are the only species so far known to be present both in the Galapagos Islands and off the coast of Central and South America. One species: Cytherelloidea praecipua recorded from off Tobago and Clipperton Islands may be present in the Galapagos but this has not definitely been confirmed. The evolution in the Gulf Coast/Caribbean region of several ostracods and their subsequent dispersal westwards is discussed.  相似文献

The post-embryonic development of the appendages of the Cyprididae ostracod Heterocypris salina (Brady, 1868) are described in detail and compared with those of other podocope species documented in previous studies. Generally, the appearence of limbs during onotgeny of H. salina is similar to that of other species, but small differences in limb morphologies were identified between H. salina and other Cyprididae species, including other Heterocypris species. Some features appear either earlier or later in the development of H. salina compared with other species, even species of the same genus. These features may be useful characters for phylogenetic analyses at the genus and family levels.  相似文献

The systematics of the freshwater ostracods of the subfamily Dolerocypridinae in Southeast Asia is reviewed: A total of five species are known and they are assigned to three genera. Astenocypris papyracea (Sars) 1903 and Dolerocypris sinensis Sars, 1903 are redescribed. Dolerocypris fasciata (Müller) 1776, from Indonesia is figured and the hitherto observed variations are discussed. Dolerocypris pellucida Klie, 1932 is transferred to the genus Tanycypris Triebel, 1959.  相似文献

Changes in oxygen and nitrate in Bahia Darwin between July 1968 and March 1969 indicate that denitrification occurred in the deeper waters of this tropical, intermittently anoxic basin. Assuming constant rates of oxidation of organic matter in equally spaced depth intervals below the pycnocline depth, the rate of denitrification was estimated to be about 62.0 µg-atom NO3-N/liter/year. This rate is attributable to denitrification in the water column because a smaller rate was estimated for strata closer to the sediment water interface.Contribution No. 3193 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Abstract

The second species of the genus, Macroasteropteron chathamensis sp. nov. is described in the present paper. It was collected from 1000 m depth during the New Zealand national biodiversity programme Ocean Survey 20/20 to the Chatham Rise and the Challenger Plateau. To accommodate this genus, a new subfamily Macroasteropteroninae is described herein. It is defined by the following autapomorphies: locking system on the shell; very small second segment on the second antenna (bearing no dorsal bristles); square shaped third and fourth segments on the same appendage; absence of dorsal bristles on the third segment of the male clasping organ; reverse position of the alpha and beta bristles on the maxillula; almost square shaped skirt on the sixth limb; and a bulbous terminal part of the seventh limb, which, in addition, does not have any bell-bearing bristles. A key to the four subfamilies of Cylindroleberididae is provided.  相似文献

A new paralichthyid flounder,Citharichthys gnathus, is described from 25 specimens from the Galapagos Islands. The new species strongly resemblesC. fragilis Gilbert, distributed in the Gulf of California and adjacent waters, in general appearance, and meristic and morphometric characters, but is distinguished from the latter by two adult characters, a remarkable bony knob at the anterior tip of the lower jaw and larger proportion of snout length in standard length.  相似文献

The Galapagos archipelago has been colonized by two species of otariid, the fur seal, Arctocephalus galapagoensis , and the sea lion, Zalophus californianus wollebaeki. The former probably arrived from South America and the latter from North America, both by way of periodic incursions of colder water forming the east Pacific corridor. The terrestrial behaviour of both these otariids is affected by the high ambient temperatures in the Galapagos Patterns of breeding behaviour of otariids which lead to intense polygyny and sexual dimorphism appear to be modified. The habit of prolonging lactation, widespread in otariids, is carried to an extreme in the Galapagos fur seal. The reason for this is unclear.  相似文献

In this study biogeographic patterns and habitatrelationships of freshwater Ostracoda wereinvestigated in the Canary Island archipelago. Mostdata were collected from published studies, thoughalso new data from Gran Canaria are presented. In all,22 freshwater species are presently known to theCanaries. Six species, viz. Ilyocypris bradyi,Cypris bispinosa, C. pubera, Herpetocypris chevreuxi, Heterocyprisincongruens, and Sarscypridopsis lanzarotensisare new to Gran Canaria, the first two also being newto the Canaries in general. Testing the influence ofa number of variables on faunal richness indicatedonly a weak association with island area. Distancesbetween islands also proved not significant, and sodid other properties of islands, including age, altitude and precipitation. This was in contrast to acomparison set of data comprising aquatic beetles.Like beetles, however, ostracods did not show a nestedpattern, i.e. faunas of species-poor islands were notsubsets of species-rich island faunas. By having lowendemicity (endemic species lacking in the Canaries),the ostracod fauna resembled island fern floras. Bothgroups of organisms have tiny diaspores (diameter<0.1 mm) and are extensively parthenogeneticsuggesting similar dispersal and founder mechanisms. We identified a pattern (with one exception), wherethose species with distributions extending acrossseveral islands also had wider within-islanddistributions. Many species showed affinities todifferent habitats depending on conductivity of water, altitude and habitat types: whether they werepermanent or temporary, hypogean or epigean, orcharacterized by running or stagnant waters.  相似文献

The Late Miocene Italian brackish Loxoconchidae are herein discussed and illustrated. Three genera and two subgenera have been recognized in the brackish Italian basins: Loxoconcha, Loxocorniculina, Loxoconchissa (Loxoconchissa) and Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia). Taking into account the diagnostic characters of several Loxoconchidae genera, in this paper Loxocorniculina is raised at a generic rank, Loxocaspia is confirmed as a subgenus within genus Loxoconchissa and several new species are established: Loxoconchissa (Loxoconchissa) kinoi nov. sp., Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia) cosentinoi nov. sp., Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia) nuda nov. sp., Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia) punctata nov. sp., Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia) reticulata nov. sp., Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia) tuberosa nov. sp. and Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia) velonae nov. sp. Loxocorniculina is a typical Paratethyan genus which widespread into the Palaeo-Mediterranean during the late Messinian Lago-Mare event. Loxoconchissa was known to be widespread only in the Paratethyan realm and in this paper it is signalled for the first time in the Late Tortonian-early Messinian of Italy. The palaeobiogeography of these genera is discussed and the observed continuous distribution of Loxocorniculina against the disjunct distribution of Loxoconchissa leads to suggest that this latter genus underwent a passive dispersal via aquatic birds.  相似文献

The Cypricercinae are one of the most speciose subfamilies of non-marine ostracods, with more than 170 described species, mostly from the tropics. Although the identity of the subfamily as such is clear, because of the presence of unifying characters such as the Triebel’s loop in the attachment of the caudal ramus, the supra-specific taxonomy of this group has long been confused because of lack of good generic and tribal characters. Here, the generic characters of the Cypricercinae are revised. Eleven genera are retained in this subfamily, including three new genera: Bradleytriebella n. gen., Nealecypris n. gen. and Pseudostrandesia n. gen. Tanycypris siamensis n. sp. is described from Thailand. In addition, five species [Bradleystrandesia fuscata (Jurine, 1820), Bradleytriebella tuberculata (Hartmann, 1964), Nealecypris obtusa (Klie, 1933), Pseudostrandesia striatoreticulata (Klie, 1932), Spirocypris horrida (Sars, 1926)] are redescribed. A key to the genera is given. We propose three tribes: the nominal tribe Cypricercini McKenzie, 1971, as well as two new tribes, Bradleystrandesiini n. trib. and Nealecypridini n. trib. To evaluate the systematic relationships within this subfamily, phylogenetic analyses, based on morphological characters of valves and soft parts, were conducted. The Neighbour Joining (NJ) tree strongly supports the classification into three independent tribes, whereas the Maximum Parsimony (MP) tree shows that Bradleystrandesiini n. trib is actually a subgroup of the Cypricercini. The Ontogeny of Neonesidea oligodentata (Bairdioidea, Ostracoda, Crustacea)   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1
This is the first detailed ontogenetic study of the appendages and carapace of a bairdioidean ostracod. This paper uses the development of the appendages and changes in the pore systems of the carapace through ontogeny to help determine the relationship between the Bairdioidea and other podocope groups. Neonesidea oligodentata has eight post-embryonic stages: one fewer than the Cypridoidea, Cytheroidea and Darwinuloidea. The first instar of N. oligodentata resembles that of the second instar of the Cypridoidea and Cytheroidea in terms of appendages, and it is postulated that there is an additional instar stage of N. oligodentata that molts within the egg. The general sequence of appearance of the limbs from instar A-7 onwards is similar to that of the Cypridoidea and Cytheroidea, but different from that of the Darwinuloidea. Like the Cypridoidea and Cytheroidea, N. oligodentata has a gap in its ontogenetic development during instar A-6, where no new Anlage is added. Pore system analysis of A-7 instars suggests that the Bairdioidea may be more closely related to the Cypridoidea than to the Cytheroidea.  相似文献

Abstract

Confusion has existed over the validity of the taxon Urochloa multiculma (Andersson) Morrone & Zuloaga, which was originally described from Galapagos, and over the presence in the islands of the closely related U. fusca (Sw.) B.F. Hansen & Wunderlin. An examination of 14 characters in 182 specimens leads to the conclusions that U. multiculma is a valid taxon endemic to Galapagos, and that U. fusca is probably a recent human‐mediated introduction to the archipelago, which may now be hybridising with multiculma. Leaf pubescence and spikelet structure are used to construct an identification key.  相似文献
