Dioecy, the segregation of male and female structures among individuals, is widespread in tropical plants, encompassing 10–30 percent of species in some sites. In many cases, interindividual sex separation is not complete, as individual plants, although nominally dioecious, may produce both types of reproductive structures. A common form of this sexual variation is the production of female structures in otherwise male individuals, commonly referred to as fruiting males. Here we report the existence of fruiting males in the dioecious tropical tree Jacaratia mexicana (Caricaceae). We show that fruiting males can constitute up to 45 percent of all males in some populations of a tropical forest in Southern Mexico. In order to determine the functional significance of fruiting males for the breeding system of J. mexicana , we compared the relative performance of male- and female-borne seeds. Our results show that seeds from fruiting males are three times less likely to germinate and survive than seeds from female trees. Based on relative seed fitness data, and sex ratios in natural populations, we estimate that 6–15 percent of the genes contributed by fruiting males to the next generation are transmitted via ovules, meaning that morphological variation in gender is at least partially accompanied by functional gender variation. Finally, our seed fitness estimates for fruiting males suggest that fruiting males will not replace female plants in natural populations.

Inorganic polyphosphate (poly P) has been considered to be a translocatable form of phosphate (Pi) in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Here we examined time-course changes in poly P content during the AMF colonization process. Onion (Allium cepa) plants were cultured with or without inoculation with Gigaspora margarita for 2-8 wk with periodic sampling. Poly P in the extracts, purified through gel filtration, was quantified by the reverse reaction of polyphosphate kinase. The length of poly P in mycorrhizal roots appeared to be shorter than in extraradical hyphae or in spores of the AMF, indicating that AMF depolymerize poly P before providing Pi to the host. The poly P content increased as colonization proceeded, and was highly correlated with the weight of the colonized roots. These results support the model that AMF supply Pi to the host through the poly P pool, and that the poly P content of a mycorrhizal root can be a good indicator of the Pi-supplying activity of AMF.  相似文献

The tropical dry forest is a greatly endangered ecosystem, from which Jacaratia mexicana is a native tree. With the aim to assess the levels of genetic variation and population structure, four wild populations of J. mexicana were studied in the Sierra de Huautla Biosphere Reserve, Morelos, Mexico. For this, DNA was extracted from 159 individuals and were amplified with six random primers using the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). A total of 54 bands were obtained, of which 50 (92.6%) were polymorphic. The total genetic diversity found within the four populations was 0.451 when estimated by Shannon's index. An AMOVA analysis showed that 84% of the total genetic variation was found within populations and 16% was among populations. The UPGMA dendrogram showed that all individuals from one of the populations (Huaxtla) formed one distinct genetic group, while the rest of the individuals did not cluster according to population. A Mantel test did not show an association between genetic and geographical distances among populations (r=0.893, p=0.20). A Bayesian cluster analysis performed with STRUCTURE, showed that the most probable number of genetic groups in the data was four (K=4), and confirmed the distinctness of Huaxtla population. Our results showed that important genetic differentiation among populations can occur even at this small geographic scale and this has to be considered in conservation actions for this genetic resource.  相似文献

Two challenges frequently encountered in the production of ornamental plants in organic horticulture are: (1) the rate of mineralization of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) from organic fertilizers can be too slow to meet the high nutrient demand of young plants, and (2) the exclusive use of peat as a substrate for pot-based plant culture is discouraged in organic production systems. In this situation, the use of beneficial soil microorganisms in combination with high quality compost substrates can contribute to adequate plant growth and flower development. In this study, we examined possible alternatives to highly soluble fertilizers and pure peat substrates using pelargonium (Pelargonium peltatum L’Her.) as a test plant. Plants were grown on a peat-based substrate with two rates of compost addition and with and without arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Inoculation with three different commercial AM inocula resulted in colonization rates of up to 36% of the total root length, whereas non-inoculated plants remained free of root colonization. Increasing the rate of compost addition increased shoot dry weight and shoot nutrient concentrations, but the supply of compost did not always completely meet plant nutrient demand. Mycorrhizal colonization increased the number of buds and flowers, as well as shoot P and potassium (K) concentrations, but did not significantly affect shoot dry matter or shoot N concentration. We conclude that addition of compost in combination with mycorrhizal inoculation can improve nutrient status and flower development of plants grown on peat-based substrates.  相似文献

Synopsis Breeding compexes of poeciliid fishes with a bisexual and two unisexual species were studied for mechanisms permitting Sympatric coexistence. The unisexuals are gynogenetic and thereby sexually dependent on the males of the bisexual species for sperm to initiate development, but inheritance is entirely maternal.Bisexual females are more abundant in headwater localities; unisexuals increase in downstream localities. Males were 10 – 18% of the total poeciliid population, regardless of the relative proportions of bisexual to unisexual females. Downstream localities were typified by greater habitat diversity, including a variety of backwater pools. The unisexuals showed a marked preference for such pools. Both field and laboratory studies showed that all three types of females as well as males preferred shaded areas with a gravel substrate.Although the four types of fish were found together, nearest neighbour data indicated that each type of female preferred its own kind. Males courted throughout the year and were indiscriminate in their choice of mates. Despite the skewed sex ratio, males were not in short supply because only a few females were sexually receptive at a given time. No significant differences existed between bisexuals and unisexuals in their relative reproductive outputs, but they were asynchronous.  相似文献

The seasonal timing of flowering and fruiting is crucial for the reproductive success of plants and for resource availability to animals. Although plants synchronize their reproductive timing to coincide with appropriate seasons by responding to environmental cues, seasonal variations in temperature and precipitation vary minimally in very wet tropical environments. To explore the latitudinal cline in the reproductive phenology of the Fagaceae in Asia, we analyzed phenology data for a total of 94, 121, and 219 species from Thailand, Malesia, and China, respectively, in the three genera of Fagaceae, Quercus, Castanopsis, and Lithocarpus. We found that Quercus and Castanopsis showed flowering peaks in April in China. In Thailand, the peak shifted to an earlier month, and the peak disappeared in Malesia. The flowering period lengthened with decreasing latitude in the animal-pollinated genera Castanopsis and Lithocarpus. However, this was not the case for the wind-pollinated genus Quercus. The fruiting period lengthened with decreasing latitude in all three genera. We examined the relationship between reproductive phenology and climatic factors. The combination of monthly temperature and precipitation best explained the monthly change in the proportion of flowering and fruiting species in China in all three genera. However, climatic factors had almost no impact on the predictive ability of the model in Malesia. Our results on phenological shifts in the family Fagaceae, from the temperate climates and seasonal tropics to the humid tropics, provide valuable information for predicting phenological changes in future climate change.  相似文献

The morphology and phenology of Paralemanea mexicana (Kützing) Vis et Sheath was evaluated seasonally in a fifth order high‐altitude stream in central Mexico. The gametophytes grew during oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions, and during particular microhabitat conditions: high current velocity (40–240 cm s?1), low to medium irradiance (5–973 μmol photons m?2 s?1), and shallow depth (1–30 cm). The abundance of gametophytes was positively correlated with low temperature, high current velocity and concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus. Interestingly, monoecious gametophytes formed two types of branches, true branches with sympodial pattern originating from meristematic cells in variable number, and abundant false branches produced during the development of the ‘Chantransia’ stage in the surface of the gametophyte or by uniseriate filaments arising within the thallus lumen. These filaments generally produce gametophytes and suggest that they could support the germination of carpospores. The frequently whorled branches are the result of a false branching pattern and are exclusive to P. mexicana. These morphological and reproductive characteristics appear to be biomechanical adaptations to avoid detachment and increase reproductive success. Efficient reproductive strategies of P. mexicana observed in this study can be interpreted as adaptations to successfully colonize streams; however, these features may not have been common in the study region due to restricted microhabitat conditions and geographic isolation.  相似文献

Asparagus officinalis is a dioecious plant. The flowers start to develop as hermaphrodites and later become unisexual. In female flowers the stamens degenerate, while in male flowers the ovary stops growing without degenerating. We have examined young asparagus flowers using SEM and optical microscopy in order to determine the exact moment of transition from hermaphroditic to unisexual development. We defined 13 stages of development, starting from flower primordia up to completely mature flowers and labelled them with numbers from -6 to 7. The first five stages are fully hermaphroditic: a difference between sexes becomes visible at stage — 1 when the style begins to develop in female flowers. Degeneration of stamens in female flowers starts somewhat later. At the stage of transition, some differences between sexes also appear in the bidimensional polypeptide pattern of flowers. RNase activity shows a distinct peak at this stage (in female flowers only), probably related to stamen degeneration.  相似文献

Poplars are among the few tree genera that can develop both ectomycorrhizal (ECM) and arbuscular (AM) associations; however, variable ratios of ECM/AM in dual mycorrhizal colonizations were observed in the roots of a variety of poplar species and hybrids. The objective of our study was to analyze the effect of internal and external factors on growth and dual AM and ECM colonization of poplar roots in three 12–15-year-old common gardens in Poland. We also analyzed the abundance of nonmycorrhizal fungal endophytes in the poplar roots. The Populus clones comprised black poplars (Populus deltoides and P. deltoides × Populus nigra), balsam poplars (Populus maximowiczii × Populus trichocarpa), and a hybrid of black and balsam poplars (P. deltoides × P. trichocarpa). Of the three sites that we studied, one was located in the vicinity of a copper smelter, where soil was contaminated with copper and lead. Poplar root tip abundance, mycorrhizal colonization, and soil fungi biomass were lower at this heavily polluted site. The total mycorrhizal colonization and the ratio of ECM and AM colonization differed among the study sites and according to soil depth. The influence of Populus genotype was significantly pronounced only within the individual study sites. The contribution of nonmycorrhizal fungal endophytes differed among the poplar clones and was higher at the polluted site than at the sites free of pollution. Our results indicate that poplar fine root abundance and AM and ECM symbiosis are influenced by environmental conditions. Further studies of different site conditions are required to characterize the utility of poplars for purposes such as the phytoremediation of polluted sites.  相似文献

Summary Effect of five fungicidesviz Agrosan. Benlate, Captan, Ceresan and Plantavax on VA mycorrhizal symbiosis in onion was studied in a phosphorus deficient, sandy loam soil. Two levels of fungicides (2.5 g and 25 g/g soil) were applied to the soil. Agrosan, Benlate and Plantavax applied at 25 g/g soil reduced the mycorrhizal colonization significantly. All the fungicides, except Captan, applied at lower concentration reduced plant growth and P uptake. Captan applied at the lower concentration had no effect on mycorrhizal colonization, plant growth and P uptake, and when applied at higher concentration had least effect on plant growth compared to other fungicides.Contribution of U.A.S. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the dry tropics, vegetative phenology varies widely with tree characteristics and soil conditions. The present work aims to document the phenological diversity of flowering and fruiting with reference to leafing events in Indian dry-tropical tree species. METHODS: Nine tree species, including one leaf-exchanging and eight deciduous showing varying leafless periods, were studied. Monthly counts of leaves, flowers and fruits were made on 160 tagged twigs on ten individuals of each species for initiation, completion and duration of different phenological events through two annual cycles. KEY RESULTS: Variation in flowering relative to leaf flushing (which occurred just prior to or during a hot, dry summer) revealed five flowering types: summer flowering (on foliated shoots), rainy-season flowering (on foliated shoots following significant rains), autumn flowering (on shoots with mature leaves), winter flowering (on shoots undergoing leaf fall) and dry-season flowering (on leafless shoots). Duration of the fruiting phenophase was shortest (3-4 months) in dry-season and winter-flowering species, 6-9 months in rainy-and autumn-flowering species, and maximum (11 months) in summer-flowering species. A wide range of time lag (<1 to >8 months) between the start of vegetative (first-leaf flush) and reproductive (first-visible flower) phases was recorded in deciduous species; this time lag was correlated with the extent of the leafless period. A synthesis of available phenological information on 119 Indian tropical trees showed that summer-flowering species were most abundant (56 % of total species) amongst the five types recognized. CONCLUSIONS: The wide diversity of seasonal flowering and fruiting with linkages to leaf flush time and leafless period reflect the fact that variable reproductive and survival strategies evolved in tree species under a monsoonic bioclimate. Flowering periodicity has evolved as an adaptation to an annual leafless period and the time required for the fruit to develop. The direct relationship between leafless period (inverse of growing period) and time lag between onset of vegetative and reproductive phases reflects the partitioning of resource use for supporting these phases. Predominance of summer flowering coupled with summer leaf flushing seems to be a unique adaptation in trees to survive under a strongly seasonal tropical climate.  相似文献

Roots of Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet were treated with tri -iodobenzoic acid (TIBA), kinetin or with nodulation factors (Nod factors) purified from Rhizobium sp. NGR234 and grown in the presence of a mycorrhizal inoculum ( Glomus mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe. Colonization by the mycorrhizal fungus was increased from <30% to c . 65% of root length when roots were treated with these growth regulators. Moreover, treatment of mycorrhizal L. purpureus roots with Nod factors or TIBA strongly induced sporocarp formation of Glomus mosseae . In parallel, the pool size of the fungal disaccharide trehalose was significantly affected in roots treated with TIBA and Nod factors alone, and with TIBA combined with all effectors, and increased from 0·06 mg g−1 d. wt in control roots to up to 1·7 mg g−1 d. wt (TIBA+kinetin). Conversely, the sucrose pool decreased from 5% d. wt to less than a half in roots treated with Nod factors. Activities of trehalase were significantly enhanced in mycorrhizal roots by the treatment with Nod factors or TIBA. When Nod factors and TIBA were added in combination, these activities were strongly enhanced suggesting synergism between these growth regulators.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a vital role in ecosystem functioning. In most grasslands, herbivory by both vertebrate and invertebrate herbivores is common and thus in order to assess herbivore effects on multitrophic-level interactions both should be considered. This study investigated the effects of grazing by rabbit and insect herbivores on root-colonization of grasses by AMF in two lowland grasslands in southern England, UK. A long-term exclosure site was used to provide a temporal assessment in order to elucidate whether any short-term responses to herbivore removal were sustained. Root samples from three grass species at each site were analysed in terms of total mycorrhizal colonization and proportional colonization by individual mycorrhizal structures. Colonization levels were up to 1.6 times greater under moderate levels of rabbit grazing (with summer maxima of 25% and winter minima of 11%) than in intensely grazed swards or fenced plots at both sites. The change was fast (within 8 weeks), consistent throughout the sampled field plots, and temporally sustainable over a 19-year period. There was no significant effect of insect herbivory on total colonization but proportional colonization by different AM structures was affected on some sample dates where vertebrate herbivores had been removed, indicating a slight effect on fungal structure allocation. The results suggest that the type of herbivore and perhaps more importantly the intensity of grazing are key determinants of below-ground effects upon mycorrhizal–host plant symbiosis. The data suggest that the extent of mycorrhizal colonization within grass host plants is strongly influenced by C assimilation and allocation.  相似文献

Colonization of two plant species by Glomus intraradices was studied to investigate the two morphological types (Arum and Paris), their symbiotic interfaces and metabolic activities. Root pieces and sections were stained to observe the colonization and metabolic activity of all mycorrhizal structures. There were no growth responses observed in the plants caused by mycorrhizal symbiosis. The two morphological types had a similar percentage of root colonized, but the Arum-type had higher metabolic activity. Most of the mycorrhizal structures (88%) showed succinate dehydrogenase activity; about half showed acid phosphatase activity; and a small percentage showed alkaline phosphatase activity. Phosphatase activity was highest in arbuscules and low in intercellular hyphae in the Arum-type colonization. In the Paris-type, hyphal coils and arbusculate coils showed a similar intermediate percentage of phosphatase activity. We conclude that acid phosphatase is more important than alkaline phosphatase in both colonization types. We discuss the possibility that, whereas arbuscules in Arum-type are the main site for phosphorus release to the host plant, both the hyphal and arbusculate coils may be involved in the Paris-type.  相似文献

菌根生长状况观察与侵染率测定是菌根学研究中一项重要的基础性工作。综述了丛枝菌根(AM)染色观察与侵染率测定方法研究概况,并对其进行比较和评价。认为采用醋酸墨水染色观察AM生长状况与采用根段侵染率加权法和放大交叉法测定AM真菌侵染率是目前较为科学、准确、易行的方法。根据不同需要也可选择其他适宜的方法,如要了解丛枝发育状况,可采用放大交叉法;如要了解泡囊和侵入点数量,可采用直接计数法,从而使其研究结果具有可比性。有必要建立基于分子生物学技术和脂肪酸定量分析技术测定一种或数种AM真菌侵染状况,这将有力推动AM真菌生理、生态功能研究的发展。  相似文献
