Studies on the food and feeding habits of Eutropius niloticus in Lake Kainji, Nigeria revealed that the fish is omnivorous but fed more on insects than on any other food. The most important insects were Povilla adusta Navas nymphs and imagos and adults of the common grasshoppers. Fish, particularly the clupeids Sierrathrissa leonensis Thys Van den Audernaerde and Pellonula afzeliusi Johnels, also formed an important part of the diet. There was seasonal variation of organisms selected for food and there were variations in the dietary items selected by different age groups. Accumulation of fat was found to correlate with seasonal feeding intensity. E. niloticus serves as food for other fishes.  相似文献

Summary Initiation and modulation of fictive feeding by cerebral to buccal interneurons (CBs) was examined in an isolated CNS preparation of Limax maximus. Three CBs which are phasically active during fictive feeding, CB1, CB3 and CB4, will reliably trigger bouts of fictive feeding when activated alone or in pairs. Another phasic CB, CBEC, is not effective for triggering feeding. One CB which is tonically active during fictive feeding, CBST, drives fictive feeding in 50% of preparations when activated alone and enhances triggering of feeding when co-activated with phasic CBs. The metacerebral giant cell (MGC) was found to be capable of triggering fictive feeding in preparations with an intact subcerebral commissure. The MGC was especially effective at increasing the effectiveness of other CBs for initiation of feeding. Short high-frequency bursts of phasic CB or MGC action potentials are capable of resetting ongoing fictive feeding. Resetting effects of CB action potentials are relatively independent of the phase of the bite-cycle in which they are activated. CB4 phase-advances the bite-cycle while the other phasic CBs phase-delay the bite cycle. Moderate frequency stimulation of CB4 speeds up the bite rate while moderate frequency stimulation of CB3 slows biting. All CBs, except the tonic CB, CBDL, increase the intensity of buccal motor neuron bursting during feeding. The excitatory effects of phasic CBs and the tonic CB, CBEPSP, on fictive feeding persist for many seconds after the offset of stimulation. A new feeding strategy in fed-batch culture, exponential feeding combined with pH-stat is suggested to avoid the accumulation of substrate in culture broth. Exponential feeding was stopped whenever a predetermined amount of limiting substrate was supplied and then pH change was observed. When pH rose above an upper limit due to the depletion of substrate, feeding was restarted. With this feeding strategy, recombinant Escherichia coli could be grown to 101 g/l by controlling the specific growth rate at 0.1 h–1.An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Blooms ofChrysochromulina breviturrita Nich. (Prymnesiophyceae) have been found to be restricted to lakes above pH 5.5 even though the alga is able to tolerate pH 4.0 in laboratory culture. A possible explanation is the increased transparency in acidifying lakes and a sensitivity ofC. breviturrita to high light intensities. A comparison was made withMougeotia sp., a filamentous green alga which co-occurs in moderately acidic lakes and has a similar pH tolerance range. This alga forms dense, floating mats or amorphous clouds in the upper littoral zone, where it would be exposed to full sunlight irradiances. In cultures ofC. breviturrita, prolonged exposures to 1600 μE · m−2 · s−1 (I0′) resulted in reductions in cell yield which were dependent age at the onset of exposure to high light intensity. Only cultures exposed to high light intensities during late stationary phase were able to recover to control levels and no recovery occurred if these cultures were nitrogen deficient.Mougeotia was more tolerant of both high light intensity and nitrogen limitation during the recovery period. The inability ofC. breviturrita to recover from the effects of high light intensity during nitrogen deprivation may be particularly important in small, stratified lakes which are undergoing acidification. The slow rate of vertical circulation, and increasing transparency, would prolong exposure of the alga to the high irradiance levels of nutrient-deficient epilimnetic waters. This suggests that the geographic distribution ofC. breviturrita may be explained in part by the increasing light intensities in lakes undergoing acidification.  相似文献

Prevalence and intensity of excretion of coccidial oocysts in actively migrating passerines (Turdus philomelos, Fringilla coelebs, Sylvia borin, Phoenicurus phoenicurus) were assessed in spring and autumn 2001 during stopovers on Helgoland. All examined species showed low prevalences of oocysts in spring (28–33%) and high prevalences in autumn migration (66–92%). In autumn, there are significant species-specific differences in prevalence and, partially, in intensity of excretion. Ground-feeding Chaffinches most commonly and most intensively shed oocysts (maximal 2,7×106 oocysts per g fresh faeces) indicating that feeding style may influence the parasite load. No significant correlation between parasite load, age, and body condition (fat depots, breast muscle shape, body mass) was found. The connection between feeding style, age, migration, immunocompetence, and survival of passerine hosts on one hand and the particularities of coccidial pathogenicity on the other are discussed.  相似文献

The feeding behavior of two sympatric species of lemurs, Lemur cattaand Lemur fulvus,was studied in an enclosure simulating a natural habitat at the Duke University Primate Center. L. fulvusspent less time feeding during the day than L. catta.But the former species ate more fruit and had longer feeding bouts on preferred food items than L. catta.They also had a shorter food passage time than L. cattaand their choice of resting places was more influenced by food distribution. Furthermore, the two lemur species ate parts of different plant species and showed different reactions to chemical plant components. According to these results, L. fulvusis a more conservative feeder than L. catta.These interspecific differences in feeding behavior may be one of a number of differences that allow the two species to coexist. In allopatry, however, L. fulvusmay also adopt feeding patterns similar to those of L. catta.But L. cattawas never found to change its feeding strategies in different areas. It may be this option of L. fulvusto adopt different feeding strategies in different situations that allows this species to have the widest range of all Malagasy lemurs. The operation of a fed-batch culture is more complicated than that of batch or continuous culture. Thus, an appropriate feeding strategy for fed-batch cultures should be carefully designed. In this study, a simple feeding strategy for fed-batch culture of Bacillus thuringiensis based on motile intensity is described. The feeding strategy consisted of two steps: (1) initiating feeding at the peak of motile intensity; (2) terminating feeding at low motile intensity (or non-motility) of the cells. In addition, the motile intensity of B. thuringiensis was used to determine the optimum environmental conditions (pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen) and optimum medium composition. Using this fed-batch strategy, the production of thuringiensin increased 34% compared with batch culture using the same environmental conditions and medium composition. The proposed strategy for fed-batch culture helps to avoid overfeeding of substrate and facilitates on-line control. A comparison of several alternative strategies for fed-batch culture demonstrated that strategies such as glucose-stat and DO-stat result in a lower productivity than that obtained using the motility intensity method.  相似文献

The quantitative relationship between chemoreceptor activity during food intake and total amount of food ingested per unit of time has been studied in last instar larvae of Pieris brassicae. Data on sensory responses and feeding intensity, derived from a study by Blom (1978), show a strong correlation between receptor activity during 1 sec periods of stimulation and food intake during 24 h. It is concluded that nerve impulses from chemoreceptors, which signal the presence of different phagostimulants, are summated algebraically in the central nervous system. Impulses from feeding deterrent receptors counteract the effects of phagostimulants. One impulse from a deterrent receptor neutralizes 2.5 impulses from phagostimulant receptors. We studied the diet of larval and juvenile Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus in the upper Ariake Bay, Japan. Diet was analyzed by examining the digestive tracts; feeding intensity, proportion of empty guts, and prey selectivity were calculated. Anchovy density was negatively influenced by temperature and positively by salinity and prey density. Diet was dominated by Acartia omorii, which was positively selected with two other copepods, Calanus sinicus and Pseudodiaptomus marinus. In contrast, Oithona davisae was highly dominant in the environment but was absent in anchovy guts; thus, this copepod was negatively selected, with two others, Tortanus derjugini and Sinocalanus sinensis. Overall, larger prey were positively selected and smaller ones were negatively selected; value of electivity index correlated negatively with prey size. Larvae [<18 mm of standard length (SL)] showed significantly lower feeding intensities and higher rates of empty guts than juveniles (≥18 mm SL). In juveniles, feeding intensity increased steadily as the fish grew in size, with a corresponding reduction in empty guts. Feeding intensity correlated positively and empty gut correlated negatively with fish size. We suggest that larger prey are important diets for postlarval Japanese anchovy in Ariake Bay.  相似文献

Summary In Gasteria and Chamaenerion, microtubular configurations were visualized immunocytochemically during meiosis and megasporogenesis in order to study their relationship to cell development, meiotic divisions and selection of the functional megaspore. In Chamaenerion, the intensity of the fluorescence found in megaspores was weaker than that found in Gasteria. Both plants exhibited concentrations of microtubules around the meiocyte nuclei during pachytene-diplotene. Preprophase bands were not observed. In Chamaenerion, cytoplasmic microtubules radiating from meiocyte nuclei were found at late prophase, the dyad stage and in the functional megaspore; in Gasteria, they were observed only at the dyad stage and in the functional megaspore. During the second meiotic division of Gasteria, dividing cells and their nuclei exhibited differences in volumes. Also, the two microtubular spindles of the dyad cells had different widths. Fluorescence indicating the presence of the cytoskeleton diminished during maturation of the large functional megaspores in both plants, whereas in the three degenerating smaller megaspores, fluorescence intensity persisted. Our conclusion is that only an indirect relationship exists between the organization of the microtubular cytoskeleton and selection of the functional megaspore.  相似文献

Fish were caught in February and October, 1985 with gill and trawl nets at different time intervals. The length and weight of the fish, the stomach pH and the weight of the stomach contents were determined. The feeding pattern of O. niloticus was observed to have a diel rhythm. The stomach became more acidic towards the afternoon and most of the evening. The pH of the stomach had a significant regression on stomach fullness. The feeding rate of O. niloticus in Lake Awasa was estimated from daily feeding periodicity and rate of gastric evacuation. The fish ingests 11.5% of their wet body weight daily at an average water temperature of 21.5 °C. It is believed that the fish ingests and assimilates adequate supply of energy (9.1 KJ/day) for growth, maintenance and other energy requiring activities of the fish.  相似文献

社会性单配制鸟类的配偶双方在抚育子代时常存在性别差异,不同鸟种的雌雄双亲往往采取不同的育雏策略。以杂色山雀(Sittiparus varius)为研究对象,2017年3—7月对繁殖巢箱进行录像监测,记录杂色山雀育雏期亲代投入情况。分析结果显示:1)双亲递食率在育雏前期(4—6日龄)无显著差异,而育雏后期(10—12日龄)雌性的递食率显著高于雄性。2)雌性亲鸟后期递食率较育雏前期显著增加;而雄性亲鸟育雏前期和后期递食率无显著差异。3)雌性递食率与自身喙宽呈极显著正相关,雄性递食率与双亲体征参数均无相关关系。总的来说,在育雏阶段,杂色山雀雌性亲鸟的递食率随着雏鸟的需求和自身身体质量发生调整,雌性在育雏后期递食率显著升高,而雄性亲鸟递食率无变化,这可能与育雏期双亲投入分工不同有关。  相似文献

We investigated patterns of acorn growth in Quercus variabilis Blume and Quercus serrata Thunb., seasonal trends in emergence of seed insects found in the acorns, oviposition periods of the insects and falling periods of insect-infested acorns. In Q. variabilis, two insect guilds were associated with acorn development: (i) the immature acorn feeding (IAF) guild [Curculionidae sp., Poecilips cardamomi (Schaufuss), and Characoma ruficirra (Hampson)]; and (ii) the mature acorn feeding (MAF) guild [Curculio robustus (Roelofs), Curculio sikkimensis (Heller), and Cydia glandicolana (Danilevsky)]. In Q. serrata, there were three guilds: (i) the pistillate flower feeding (PFF) guild (cynipid wasp); (ii) the IAF guild [sap absorption by Mechoris ursulus (Roelofs)]; and (iii) the MAF guild (M. ursulus, C. sikkimensis, Cydia danilevskyi (Kuznetzov), C. glandicolana and Autostichidae sp.). The succession of guilds during acorn development may be a consequence of the use by different species of the limited food resource. The lack of a PFF guild in Q. variabilis that was found in our field site would have a positive effect on IAF guilds in utilizing the acorns.  相似文献

The instream distributions and feeding habits of two species of sleeper, Eleotris acanthopoma and E. fusca, were studied in the Teima River on Okinawa Island, southern Japan. Both adult fishes inhabited the river, but their distribution patterns were found to be different. The distribution of E. acanthopoma was from the tidally influenced area to the lower part of the freshwater area, whereas E. fusca was distributed almost entirely in the freshwater area. They were found to coexist at the upper limit of the tidally influenced area and the lower part of the freshwater area. Their feeding habits were clearly different, although both species were carnivorous. Eleotris acanthopoma fed mainly on crabs in the tidally influenced area and on aquatic snails in the freshwater area, where they coexist with E. fusca. In contrast, E. fusca fed mainly on shrimps in the freshwater area. Their coexistence may result from the difference in their feeding habits.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles of the roughskin sculpin Trachidermus fasciatus were collected during four cruises in March and April 2001 to study the distribution and diet of the fish in the Chikugo estuary in the northern Ariake Bay, Japan. Sampling was conducted at seven stations covering an area approximately 30 km in length along the estuary, with salinity ranging from nearly 0 to about 30 PSU. Gut contents were analyzed by separating, identifying, and counting the prey organisms. Plankton samples were collected during each cruise to study the numerical composition and abundance of copepods in ambient water. A total of 1790 larvae and juveniles of T. fasciatus were collected; they were distributed in the five uppermost stations, covering approximately 20 km and ranging in salinity from 0.4 to 27.4 PSU. The fish fed almost exclusively on a single calanoid copepod species, Sinocalanus sinensis, which was numerically the most abundant in the ambient water at the upper part of the Chikugo River. At the lower part of the river, the fish positively selected S. sinensis while negatively selecting other species. T. fasciatus larvae experienced a high proportion of empty guts and low feeding intensity at around 9.0 mm body length, which appears to be associated with commencement of exogenous feeding. The proportion of empty guts reduced sharply at subsequent stages and was accompanied by an increase in feeding intensity. The oligohaline and mesohaline areas are important nursery grounds, and S. sinensis is an important prey copepod species for the larval and juvenile T. fasciatus in the Chikugo estuary.  相似文献

Enzymes responsible for digestion of food protein were evaluated and characterized in red lobster (Panulirus interruptus). Several tissues, organs, and body fluids were analyzed. The same composition of proteases was found in gastric juice, midgut gland, and intestinal contents. Using specific substrates and inhibitors, we indentified several isotrypsins and isochymotrypsins by gel electrophoresis. Protease activity was found at pH 3 and reduced by using pepstatin A. Operational variables of enzymes were characterized for management of future studies and potential biotechnologies. Types and activities of lobster digestive enzymes constitute background information to study the digestive abilities of the organism further, and will lead to understanding nutritional needs and feeding ecology, mainly because decapods display unique morphologic, metabolic, and behavioral changes during their life cycle. Also, such enzymes become alternative tools for use in biotechnologies.  相似文献

The ELF-97 phosphatase substrate was used to examine phosphatase activity in four strains of the estuarine heterotrophic dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria shumwayae. Acid and alkaline phosphatase activities also were evaluated at different pH values using bulk colorimetric methods. Intracellular phosphatase activity was demonstrated in P. shumwayae cells that were actively feeding on a fish cell line and in food limited cells that had not fed on fish cells for 3 days. All strains, whether actively feeding or food limited showed similar phosphatase activities. P. shumwayae cells feeding on fish cells showed ELF-97 activity near, or surrounding, the food vacuole. Relatively small, spherical ELF-97 deposits were also observed in the cytoplasm and sometimes near the plasma membrane. ELF-97 fluorescence was highly variable among cells, likely reflecting different stages in digestion and related metabolic processes. The location of enzyme activity and supporting colorimetric measurements suggest that, as in other heterotrophic protists, acid phosphatases predominate in P. shumwayae and have a general catabolic function.  相似文献

Age and growth of Labeo bata (Ham.) was studied by the analysis of annuli found on the scale and by length-frequency distribution. The fish attained lengths of 131, 194, 236, 277, 314, 341 and 364 mm at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th years of life respectively. The increase in length of scale bears a constant relationship with the increase in length of fish, and regression analysis yielded a straight line between scale and body length. Calculated values could be expressed as: Y = –2.534 + 0.064 XThe growth rate of the fish was found high during the 1st and 2nd years and decreased gradually afterwards till the 7th year. Both sexes showed more a or less similar growth rate and attained a similar longevity. Growth trend of the fish confirmed the von Bertalanffy growth equation: Lt = 450(l–e–0.2165(t+0.5963)) The seasonal growth curve was chiefly influenced by feeding intensity in fishes of 1st year class while in adults it was affected by feeding intensity as well as by maturation of the gonads.  相似文献

Hunger affects the feeding and swimming behaviour in fish. After 36 h of food deprivation, the feeding and swimming behaviour of Pseudorasbora parva (Cyprinidae) was studied under different prey densities (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 of Daphnia pulex per liter). The initial feeding rates showed marked variations in relation to prey availability. Under high prey densities, the initial feeding rate of fish was higher and subsequently decreased faster, when compared to those feeding under low prey densities. At higher prey densities, two factors were involved: that of higher prey encounter rates and also the attainment of food satiation at a faster rate. Across all prey densities, the feeding rates of fish reached a plateau after satiation. The swimming speed of fish was found to be negatively related to the prey density and a significant change in swimming speed was noted as being directly related to the level of satiation. It was found that the increasing satiation level greatly influenced the handling time and reactive volume of predator, which finally caused reduced feeding rates.  相似文献
