The floating water fern Salvinia molesta has occurred in Lake Naivasha since the early 1960s and during this period has obstructed fishing activities and navigation. In recent years the extent of Salvinia has declined markedly. Since 1988, a second floating weed, Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), has colonised the lake. Salvinia formed large mats around the edges, bays and lagoons and had very few plant or invertebrate species associated with it. Mats of E. crassipes, however, support a greater abundance and variety of animal and plant species, which shows a relationship with mat size. This seems to have facilitated plant succession but without a zonation typical of the classic hydroseral sequence for the lake.  相似文献

Summary The main events in the development of the vascular hydrophyte flora of Lake Kariba are reviewed on the basis of the growth forms present in the Lake.The habitats occupied by free floating plants are still dominated by Salvinia auriculata and here the situation appears ho have reached a measure of stability.The colonies of sudd plants Salvinia mats have similarly reached an apparently stable state.The emergent vegetation of the shores of the lake is shown to be affected by a number of factors, the most important probably being the fluctuations in lake level.Attached hydrophytes with floating leaves are present in such small quantity as to be a relatively unimportant constituent of the present vascular hydrophyte flora of Lake Kariba.The significance to the productivity of Lake Kariba of the establishment of indigenous aquatic and semi-aquatic plants is stated. The detrimental effect of Salvinia mats in retarding the establishment of these plants is pointed out.The development of the submerged aquatic flora is briefly described.Finally these separate events are reviewed in the chronological order in which they occurred.
Résumé Les principaux stages dans le développement de la flore vasculaire hydrophyte du Lac Kariba sont examinés selon l'échelle de croissance des plantes qui se recontrent actuellement dans le lac.Les habitats des plantes flottantes sans attache sont toujours dominés par la Salvinia auriculata; dans ces aires la situation semble avoir atteint, dans une certaine mesure, un état stable.Les colonies de plantes su sedd sur les radeaux de Salvinia paraissent aussi avoir atteint un état stable.Preuve est fournie que la végétation émergeant sur les rives du lac est influencée par un certain nombre de facteurs, dont les plus importantts. sont les variations dans le niveau du lac.Les hydrophytes á pédoncule et á feuilles rencontrent en quantité tellement réduite qu'elles ne constituent qu'un élément relativement sans importance de la flore vasculaire hydrophyte actuelle du Lac Kariba.En termes de productivité du Lac Kariba, les conséquences de l'établissement de plantes aquatiques ou semi-aquatiques est mise en lumiére. Summary Young Tilapia on Lake Kariba show a marked preference for shallow water but this is complicated by fluctuating lake levels, the floating weed Salvinia auriculata and the Tigerfish Hydrocynus vittatus. Tilapia nurseries found to date occur on shallow sloping shores predominently in the bush cleared areas and overlie Lower Karroo and Marly Sandstones. They are characterised by having a minimum of Salvinia coverage and a diversity of emergent and submerged aquatic plant growth arranged in fairly definate zones.Rising lake levels provide the most favourable conditions for young Tilapia in the shallow, temporary nurseries. Receding water levels force the fish into Cerotophyllum and Potamogeton beds of the deeper water. Tilapia do not leave cover until a length of between 17 cm and 19 cm is attained. Above this size they are considered reasonably safe from Hydrocynus. The impact on Tilapia of three nocturnal predators is considered insignificant at the present time. Salvinia has the effect of causing lower oxygen tensions and retardation of essential submerged aquatic vegetation and is considered detrimental to the Tilapia fishery. Submerged aquatic plants are highly desirable to protect young Tilapia from predation during receding water levels.Presented at the Symposium on Standing Waters, Grahamstown, South Africa, in July 1968.  相似文献

The expected outcome of weed control in natural systems is that the decline of a dominant weed will result in an increase in diversity of the plant community but this has seldom been tested. Here we evaluate the response of the plant community following the decline of diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa) in six different pastures at White Lake, BC, Canada over five years. This period followed the establishment, spread and high levels of attack by the introduced European weevil, Larinus minutus, as part of a biological control program. Knapweed declined immediately before and during the study period, but, contrary to expectations, the species richness and diversity of the rangeland plant community did not increase. The absolute cover of native and introduced forbs and grasses increased following knapweed decline, but only the introduced grasses showed a consistent increase in cover relative to the other life-forms. However, unlike in other studies, the native plants dominated the study site. We conclude that the changes in plant communities following successful biological control are variable among programs and that the impact of replacement species must be evaluated in assessing the success of ecological restoration programs that use biological control to manage an undesirable weed.  相似文献

About 40 species of piscivorous birds have been recorded on Lake Kariba (Zimbabwe-Zambia) but only 26 were observed during this study, carried out in 1986–87. The Reed Cormorant Phalacrocorax africanus was the most numerous and made up 51.4% of all the birds seen, followed by the Whitewinged Black Tern Chlidonias leucoptera (26.7%), and the Darter Anhinga melanogaster (10.8%). Several species roosted or bred in the drowned trees which project above the lake surface but gently sloping shores were the most important feeding grounds. Relatively few birds were seen on steeply sloping shores or in open water. There was a distinct pattern of seasonal abundance, with birds being most numerous in the rainy season (November-April). The relative abundance of some fish species also was greatest during this period. There was a positive relationship between the numbers of some bird species and the relative abundance of these fish. The mean density of piscivores (0.05 ha?1) was low compared to some other African waters. This is attributed to the fact that Lake Kariba is relatively deep and its shoreline is mostly steep. The mean population of 25 000 birds consumed less than 1000 t of fish per annum, compared to almost 40000 t taken by the commercial fisheries. A considerable portion of the birds' diet was fish that were not taken commercially.  相似文献

Phenotypic responses of Potamogeton amplifolius and Nuphar advena to different light (7% and 35% of surface irradiance) and nutrient environments were assessed with field manipulation experiments. Higher light and nutrient availability enhanced the growth of P. amplifolius by 154% and 255%, respectively. Additionally, biomass was allocated differently depending on the resource: high light availability resulted in a higher root/shoot ratio, whereas high nutrient availability resulted in a lower root/shoot ratio. Low light availability and high nutrient availability increased the nitrogen content of leaf tissue by 53% and 40% respectively, resulting in a 37% and 31% decrease in the C/N ratio. Root nitrogen content was also increased by low light and high nutrient availability, by 50% (P=0.0807) and 77% respectively, resulting in a 20% and 40% decrease in root C/N ratio. Leaf phenolics were significantly increased 72% by high light and 31% by high nutrient availability, but root phenolic concentrations were not altered significantly. None of these changes in tissue constituents resulted in altered palatability to crayfish. N. advena was killed by the same high nutrient treatment that stimulated growth in P. amplifolius, preventing assessment of phenotypic responses to nutrient availability. However, high light availability increased overall growth by 24%, but this was mainly due to increased growth of the rhizome (increased 100%), resulting in a higher root/shoot ratio. High light tended to increase the production of floating leaves (P=0.09) and significantly decreased the production of submersed leaves. High light availability decreased the nitrogen content by 15% and 25% and increased the phenolic concentration by 88% and 255% in floating and submersed leaves, respectively. These differences in leaf traits did not result in detectable differences in damage by herbivores.  相似文献

A member of the Cyprinidae family, the Chalcalburnus tarichi is a fish species that only inhabits the Lake Van Basin. The Lake Van represents an interesting ecosystem in the world, known as the biggest soda lake in the world, in that its water is highly alkaline with a pH of 9.8. C. tarichi has bright-silver color, its back is grayish green, and the abdominal region is silver. Its body is covered with small scales, and its eyes are large. It feeds on phyto and zooplanktons. Its average life span is 7 years, and the fish reaches reproductive maturity at 3 years old. C. tarichi is an diadrom fish that lives in the lake, but during the reproduction period it immigrates to the surrounding freshwater rivers returning after the reproduction period of April–July. In the past, pearl mullet was an attractive fresh fish for the local people and was easily caught during the spawning migration, resulting in over-fishing. The species was one of the highly endangered animals of Turkey before conservation studies, some 10 years ago, have started. At present, illegal fishing activities declined, although some locals are continuing to fish during the spawning season.  相似文献

High densities of zoobenthos inhabited Lake Mendota's profundal zone in the early 1900s through the mid-1940s. Chaoborus punctipennis was the most abundant organism during the winter, along with moderate densities of Chironomus spp., Pisidium sp., oligochaetes, and Procladius sp. By the early 1950s, Chaoborus punctipennis densities had declined to 10% of former levels, while Chironomus increased significantly. However, by the mid-1960s, Chaoborus, Chironomus, and Pisidium densities had decreased to very low population levels. By 1987–89, Pisidium was no longer found. Zoobenthos that had not decreased from earlier surveys were oligochaetes and Procladius, although further sampling of oligochaetes is needed to confirm current densities. These organisms are the most tolerant of severe anoxia.Four possible reasons for this decline were evaluated: (a) decline in food availability, (b) increase in fish predation, (c) use of toxic insecticides in the drainage basin, and (d) changes in the profundal sediment environment. Based on literature information and long-term data for Lake Mendota, a change in the profundal sediment environment is the most likely explanation for the decline in the less-tolerant zoobenthos species. Although the duration and extent of anoxia in the hypolimnion have not changed since the early 1900s, hypolimnetic ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations apparently have increased as Mendota became more eutrophic after the mid-1940s. However, further study is needed to determine if these higher concentrations or other factors were responsible for the dramatic decline in lake Mendota's profundal zoobenthos.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Bosmina longirostris in a large tropical reservoir, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, are described. Population density showed two peaks associated with periods of high nutrient fluxes. Fecundity was always low. Two eggs per female was the maximum ever recorded. Instantaneous rates of birth, death and population growth calculated from field data using the egg ratio method are discussed. The rate of biomass change fluctuated in a regular pattern, probably linked to food availability or predation by a clupeid, Limnothrissa miodon.  相似文献

The effect of foraging by largemouth bass fry (Micropterus salmoides) upon invertebrates associated with aquatic macrophytes was determined using six 4 m2 exclosures in Cochran Lake, Michigan during June 1978. The cladoceranSida crystallina rapidly declined in exclosures with fry, but increased in control exclosures without fry. Chironomids and chydorids showed little change in the exclosures.Invertebrate populations and foraging by fry were also monitored in the lake during 1976 and 1979.Sida declined rapidly in June of both years. In 1979, a decline from 2.2 × 103 to 0.3 × 103 individuals per m2 and a sharp drop in the proportion of adults between 19 and 22 June coincided with the entry of a large school of fry into the study site on 19 June. Chironomids also declined during June of both years, while chydorids became increasingly abundant in mid-summer and showed no evidence of depletion by the fish.These results suggest that populations of certain prey, which are found locally in high densities in the littoral zone, may be highly susceptible to brief episodes of intense predation by fish fry.  相似文献

The biomass and maximum depth of colonization (Z max) of Egeria najas Planchon (submerged), and the biomass and area covered by a stand of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms and Salvinia herzogii Raddi (floating species) were assessed to measure the effects of a 5 m drawdown in water level of the Itaipu Reservoir (Brazil–Paraguay), which lasted about 3 months. The frequency of occurrence of the two first species, and of Salvinia spp was also assessed in the main arms of the reservoir. A conspicuous decrease of E. najas biomass was observed and this attribute did not reach the previous values even 10 months after the water level had returned to normal. Rapid growth of free-floating species (surface t doub = 2.9 and 3.2 days for total biomass of S. herzogii and E. crassipes, respectively, and 2.3 days for surface area covered by both species) was recorded immediately after the water level returned to normal. This fast growth was related to phosphorus increases in water. A clear succession was observed over a period of 103 days, during which S. herzogii was slowly substituted by E. crassipes. The effects of water level drawdown were also observed on E. najas frequency, given that this species occurred in 38% of the stands investigated before the water drawdown, but in only 9 and 6% of stands following 1 and 10 months of water level recovery, respectively. Water drawdown did not affect the frequency of occurrence of the floating species, which remained approximately constant, and lower than 15% in several of the reservoir arms investigated.  相似文献

The structure of the stomata of the floating leaves ofSalvinia herzogii has been analyzed with light and scanning electron microscopy. Peculiar extensions (cuticle?) of the outer and inner tangential sides of the walls of the guard-cells are described. Both extensions, partially joined at their ends, are encircling a pore. This structure is used to propose an alternative explanation for the risk of the occlusion of the ostioles, different from that given byHaberlandt. The conductivity of these stomata was checked with a porometer and the ostioles proved to be permanently open. Their type of stomatogenesis is discussed. The stomata ofSalvinia are considered to be vestigial structures and their sunken position is taken as evidence in support of a xeric hypothetic ancestor of the genus.  相似文献

Neohydronomus affinis was imported into Australia as a potential biological control agent for the floating aquatic weedPistia stratiotes. Quarantine studies demonstrated that this weevil was host specific toP. stratiotes and it was released into the field in 1982. Subsequently it was released as a control agent for this weed in several other countries. In AustraliaN. affinis reduced infestations ofP. stratiotes by 40% or more within 12–18 months. The results are discussed in relation to its effectiveness in other parts of the world. We concluded thatN. affinis effectively controlsP. stratiotes in tropical regions (to lat. 22°), but in cooler regions its effectiveness fluctuates with seasonal conditions.   相似文献

Diatom associations from the aufwuchs of inundated trees and under-water leaves of Salvinia communities in open and in enclosed transitional and semi-riverine water of the drowned upper Mwenda river area, lake Kariba were examined in relation to seasonal changes in lake and river, to species of host plant and to decreasing light quality to a depth of 3 m. The flora remained fairly stable in the summer months, changes in the relative percentage composition of the major and minor associations occurred from scouring floodwaters to stagnation in the semi-riverine areas from limited flow and extensive growth of Salvinia. The percentage frequency of occurrence remained high. The flora was less stable in the winter; some species were slow to recolonise tree areas exposed during down-draw of lake water in summer, especially at the lake face. A few species increased in relative percentage value in winter but the percentage frequency of occurrence in the minor association was poor. Achnanthes minutissima dominated particularly in the enclosed water where it was the cause of serious space competition especially to the larger species of diatom. Highest values throughout were obtained from the area of greatest change viz. the transitional water between riverine and lake conditions.Local environment was of greater significance in relative percentage abundance of diatoms than was the species of host plant. A few species showed ambivalency, becoming planktonic or epiphytic with changes in the environment. Epiphytes taken at increasing depth of water showed that 50% of them occurred in the first 1.5 m, some increased with depth, notably Rhopalodia rhopala and a few appeared to be tolerant of light changes.  相似文献

Largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides Lacepède growth (in length) increased an average of 14% and bioenergetics modeling predicted a 38% increase in total annual food consumption following a large-scale reduction of hydrilla Hydrilla verticillata L.f. Royle in Spring Creek, a 2,343-ha embayment of Lake Seminole, Georgia. Coverage of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) declined from 76% to 22% in 1 year due to a drip-delivery fluridone treatment. In contrast, largemouth bass growth only increased an average of 4% and bioenegetics modeling predicted a 13% increase in total food consumption over the same time period in the Chattahoochee River embyament, where SAV coverage naturally declined from 26% to 15%. Diets were collected from a total of 4,409 largemouth bass over a 2.5-year period in the two embayments; the primary diet item (by weight) for largemouth bass in both embayments was sunfish (mostly Lepomis spp.). Diets before and after SAV reduction were generally similar for fish greater than stock-size (≥203 mm) in the Spring Creek arm; however, fewer invertebrates were consumed after SAV reduction. Low diet similarity was observed in smaller fish, caused by a decline in consumption of grass shrimp and sunfishes and an increase in use of damselflies, shiners Notropis spp., and topminnows Fundulus spp. after SAV reduction. Diets were similar between the same time periods for all sizes of fish in the Chattahoochee River arm. These results agreed with many laboratory results describing the effects of aquatic plant density on largemouth bass food consumption and growth, and demonstrated that increased predation efficiency resulting from decreased plant abundance was likely a stronger factor determining growth rates than any potential diet shift that may occur as a result in vegetation decline.  相似文献

Mechanical harvesting is used to control submerged aquatic weeds in parts of the hydro-lakes in New Zealand's North Island. Problem species are Egeria densa and Lagarosiphon major (Hydrocharitaceae), and Ceratophyllum demersum. Experiments were conducted in two contrasting hydro-lakes. Lake Aratiatia; clear water (K o 0.2 m–1) and a low residence time (< 8 h), and Lake Ohakuri; turbid water (K o = 0.6) and a longer residence time (> 5 days). Growth rates were measured underwater in harvested and control (unharvested) plots. Regrowth of C. demersum was dependent on the prior establishment of the rooted Hydrocharitaceae. Regrowth of the Hydrocharitaceae was inhibited where significant water movement occurred. Regrowth declined after 3 six-monthly harvests allowing the establishment of low growing native Nitella spp. beds in the smaller clear water lake. In Lake Ohakuri there was a change in species dominance from Ceratophyllum to Elodea canadensis in shallow (1–2 m) water. No change in species dominance was observed in deeper (>2 m) water and native species were not able to re-establish. The recommended cutting frequency for management of surface weed growths was only once per year in Lake Aratiatia, but twice per year in Lake Ohakuri.  相似文献

Summary The establishment in South Africa of a florivorous, apionid weevil, Trichapion lativentre, on Sesbania punicea, a leguminous weed of South American origin, has reduced seed production of the plants by >98%. Surveys of the age structure and density of plants in infestations of S. punicea throughout South Africa have shown that the rate of recruitment of seedlings has drastically declined within a few years in many areas, due to the weevils. However, there has unexpectedly not been a corresponding decline in the density of mature plants in extant infestations of S. punicea. In spite of this, T. lativentre has curtailed the rate of spread of the weed into uninvaded habitats and has impeded reinvasion into areas cleared of infestations by mechanical means or by another complimentary biocontrol agent.  相似文献

The distribution of two sedge species was studied in two mires which differ in abiotic environments and in distribution ofPhragmites australis. Carex lasiocarpa var.occultans dominated in nutrient-poor valley mire, andCarex thunbergii var.appendiculata dominated in nutrient-rich flood plain subject to water fluctuations.Phragmites australis grew well in nutrient-rich conditions. The distribution ofC. lasiocarpa showed a strong negative correlation withP. australis coverage, whereasC. thunbergii coverage was not affected byP. australis. The leaf area per dry leaf mass (specific leaf area: SLA) ofC. thunbergii increased with shading byP. australis, but that ofC. lasiocarpa was stable. The SLA flexibility ofC. thunbergii to light interception might enable this species to invadeP. australis patches in nutrient-rich environments. The residual nutrient ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus (the ratio of the residual nutrient content at the end of the growing season to peak nutrient content) in the vegetative ramet ofC. thunbergii was 1.7 times higher than that ofC. lasiocarpa. This low residual ratio may indicate effective nutrient recovery to storage organs. The effective nutrient recovery inC. lasiocarpa might enable this species to grow even in nutrient-poor environments. However, it may be difficult forC. lasiocarpa to expand its habitat to nutrient-rich areas whereP. australis dominates as it is not shade tolerant.  相似文献

The stomach contents of 33 Whitewinged Black Terns were examined over the period 26 August 1971 to 6 January 1972. The most important single food item was the sardine, Limnothrissa miodon. This sheds new light on the habits of this fish. The terns fed primarily during calm weather. Sardines are caught by hovering and diving. Fishes of the genera Haplochromis and Synodonlis, also appeared in the stomach contents. Terns taken from marginal localities appear not to feed on fish. Of the insects eaten Odonata are the most important aquatic source of food, while many terrestrial insects are eaten (Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Isoptera). Such insects could have been found drifting on mats of Salvinia on which the terns rest, otherwise insects are either hawked or skimmed from the surface of the water.  相似文献

The population dynamics of two small cichlid fishes (Pharyngochromis darlingi andPseudocrenilabrus philander) were studied in Lake Kariba, a very large African man-made lake. They are of no economic importance but make up about 14% and 7% respectively of the inshore fish population and are the major components of the diet of fish-eating birds on the lake.P. darlingi isthe larger species (L = 156.5 mm) and is found on both shelving and steep, eroding shores.
