Natural triploid hybrids (Senecio x londinensis Lousley) betweenS. squalidus L. (2n = 20) and 5. viscosus L. (2n = 40) are fairlyfrequently found in Britain. Under glasshouse conditions bothnatural and artificial hybrids displayed very low levels ofseed fertility and gave rise to morphologically diverse F2 plantsat about the triploid or pentaploid chromosome levels. By theF4 generation, progeny of a F2 pentaploid plant had somaticchromosome numbers near to the tetraploid level and considerablyincreased pollen and seed fertilities. Such fertile tetraploidsegregants of S. x londinensis permit the introgression of S.squalidus genes into S. viscosus, and may indicate the courseof introgression into other tetraploid species of Senecio. Seed set in triploid Musa spp. L. is very low due to high levelsof sterility. This makes cross breeding of plantain and bananadifficult. Nonetheless, several triploid plantain and bananacultivars produce seeds after hand pollination with diploidparents. This paper reports results about the pattern of seedvariation, success of in vitro germination and hybrid productionafter triploid-diploid crosses. Between-and within-clones differencesin seed set were observed. ABB cooking bananas had the highestrates of seed production followed by AAB French plantains. Plantainsproduced more diploid than tetraploid offsprings after triploid-diploidcrosses, which suggests that meiosis resulted in the productionof balanced haploid gametes (n = x) due to normal chromosomebehaviour between homologous genomes. Seed set variation withinclones was influenced by both the production of 2n (= 3x) gametesin the triploid parent and climatic factors. Indeed, seed production,embryo and seed germination success, and euploid and tetraploidhybrid production followed a pattern of seasonal variation reachinga peak in September. Griseofulvin pre-treatment of bracken (Pteridium aquilinum)prothalli reduces their susceptibility to invasion by Botrytiscinerea. The number of infection pegs successfully penetratingcell walls is reduced and the size of lesions, where penetrationis achieved, is much reduced. This is partly attributed to reductionin fungal growth-rate by free griseofulvin, but there is alsoa change in host cell-wall reaction to infection. The generalappearance of lesions in griseofulvin-treated prothalli is similarto that of lesions developing on naturally resistant clonesof prothalli. Griseofulvin treatment has no effect on the susceptibilityof prothalli to invasion by Pytkium debaryamtm.  相似文献

The defensive characteristics of the sawflies have received special attention due to the involvement of toxic compounds obtained from host plants. In this context, the haemolymph-based defense is one of the strategies known in sawflies to dissuade the attack of predators. Aneugmenus merida is a neotropical sawfly whose larvae are herbivorous on the toxic bracken fern Pteridium spp. The present study examines the defensive properties of the A. merida larval haemolymph and its possible link with the chemistry of its host plant. We report the behavior of the solitary hunter ant Odontomachus chelifer towards A. merida larvae under laboratory conditions. In addition, we studied the liquid intake behavior of the ants provided with solutions of crude haemolymph, bracken extracts, and its fractions. A. merida larvae showed a marked defensive capacity against the ants. The inhibition of the attack was observed during the stages of antennal contact and mandibular blow, suggesting that larval defensive capacity is due to factors present in the integument and haemolymph. Aqueous and methanolic fractions of haemolymph and bracken also deterred feeding. Although some common compounds were detected in the haemolymph and bracken fractions, they were in very small quantities, suggesting that they are not responsible for the bioactivity. Therefore, the hypothetical connection between the host plant chemistry and larval defensive capacity could not be evidenced. We suggest that the deterrent compounds present in the haemolymph and integument could be jointly acting in the sawfly’s defensive strategy.  相似文献

The occurrence of silicon in mature fronds of Pteridium aquilinumwas investigated using light and scanning electron microscopyand X-ray micro analysis. The heaviest deposits were locatedin the outer tangential walls of the epidermis of the petiole,but the upper epidermal cells of the costal regions of the laminaealso accumulated small quantities. No discrete bodies were associatedwith these deposits. However, the mid-ribs of the laminae exhibitedsome long siliceous fibres associated with the luminae of thestrengthening tissues. Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) is aggressively displacing heather (Calluna vulgaris) on many moorlands in Britain. We investigated the use of lignin derivatives to identify the distribution of soil organic matter (SOM) derived from bracken in moorland soil profiles formed under heather. Phenylpropanoids extracted from recently senesced litters, roots and SOM, using alkaline CuO oxidation, showed distinct signatures for bracken and heather, with vanillyl moieties dominating bracken litter extracts and vanillyl and syringyl dominating heather litter extracts. Ratios of vanillyl and syringyl concentrations characterised the SOM derived from heather and bracken better than the concentrations of the individual moieties. The analysis showed up to a depth of 5 cm under pure bracken cover, and at the interface between heather and bracken, the SOM was largely derived from bracken litter but below that depth SOM was apparently derived from heather. The use of these methods to identify the plant origin of SOM not only enables understanding the effects of changing vegetation cover on organic matter dynamics in moorland soils but could also facilitate management techniques in moorland/heathland restoration which involve the removal of comparatively nutrient-rich SOM derived from bracken. Biological invasion is one of the major components of global change. In the Brazilian Cerrado, the fern Pteridium arachnoideum (neotropical bracken) is a potentially invasive species which is expected to change the vegetation structure of savannas. We assessed effects of the dominance of P. arachnoideum on the diversity of woody Cerrado species. We compared three sites dominated by neotropical bracken with three sites without neotropical bracken. We used multivariate analyses of variance and rarefaction curves with confidence limits to test whether the groups of species found in invaded areas were different from those found in non-invaded ones. We also analyzed the density of individuals and species and the mean area at breast height per plot. We found significant floristic differences between the areas. The diversity and the densities in the invaded areas were lower than in non-invaded ones. However, we did not observe differences in the mean area at breast height of woody plants. Thus, the P. arachnoideum invasion is a potential threat to Cerrado biodiversity. Management efforts should be made to control the bracken, since its dominance in the plant community may lead to impoverishment and simplification of the savanna vegetation.  相似文献

大豆蚜 Aphis hlycines 有翅和无翅孤雌生殖蚜为其寄主植物大豆叶和鼠李叶气味所引诱,而非寄主植物棉花叶和黄瓜叶气味处于中性,丝瓜叶和南瓜叶气味具有明显的排斥作用。非寄主植物气味可以遮蔽寄主植物气味的引诱作用。大豆蚜触角感受器对植物气味具有嗅觉生理反应,对一些化合物的最小感觉阈值达10-5至10-6体积比浓度,表明大豆蚜触角上存在识别植物气味的嗅觉受体细胞。由此证明,嗅觉在大豆蚜选择寄主植物过程中起重要作用。  相似文献

Total genomic A DNA labelled broad centromericregions of all 22 chromosomes of the diploid line, Calcutta4 (M. acuminataColla. ssp.burmanniccoides; A genome) with somechromosomes showing stronger hybridization. To identify molecules that function in the plant secretory pathway,we screened for Arabidopsis thaliana cDNA clones that complementthe temperature-sensitive (ts), secretion-deficient sec15 mutationof yeast Saccha-romyces cerevisiae. RMA1, one of the genes obtainedin this screening, suppressed not only the ts growth of sec15but also its secretory defect. RMA1 is not a structural homologueof SEC15 but encodes a novel 28 kDa protein with a RING fingermotif and a C-terminal membrane-anchoring domain. Mutationalanalysis indicates that the RING finger motif of RMA1 is importantfor its suppression activity. In Arabidopsis plant, RMA1 isubiquitously expressed. A search for homologous proteins inthe database revealed that Arabidopsis, nematode, mouse andhuman possess close homologues of RMA1. (Received January 5, 1998; Accepted March 9, 1998)  相似文献

Pollen plantlets of Datura metel L. have been successfully rearedin vitro through anther culture on a nutrient medium supplementedwith coconut milk (15 per cent v/v) The early segmentation patternof the proembryos and their subsequent differentiation intoheart, torpedo, and cotyledonary stages were traced. More than100 plantlets were grown to maturity on soil. They grew normallyand produced flowers. Root-tip and leaf-squash preparationsshowed variable numbers of chromosomes in their cells, and thisindicated the occurrence of ploidy plants among the population.Frequency determinations showed the predominant types to bediploid (70 per cent), triploid (24 per cent), and haploid (6per cent). Differences in the morphology of mature plants inregard to floral size, meiotic irregularities in PMCs, formationof giant pollen grains, differential fruitset, somatic mosaicismin respect of chromosome number, and aneuploidy of cells, wererecorded. Plantain-derived tetraploid hybrids are routinely crossed inMusabreedingprogrammes with diploidMusaaccessions for the efficient generationof putative triploid hybrid seed. However, natural open pollinationof these same tetraploid hybrids also consistently generatesviable seed. The mean germination rate of such open pollinatedseed was observed to be higher than that of seed generated fromartificial pollinations. This may suggest that tetraploidMusahybridsplayed a much more important role in the evolution of triploidMusalandracesthan previously considered. Moreover, the elite performanceof certain hybrids generated through such open pollination offerspossibilities of newMusabreeding paradigms. A new model is proposed which relates the weight of plants totheir spatial arrangement. The weight of each plant is calculatedas the integral of the function f(r) = L(cr2 + 1)–2 overan area allocated to it, r being distance from the plant, withL and c parameters to be specified. The model is thus concise,general, in that it can be used to describe the effects of anyspatial arrangement on plant weight, and the parameters L andc have a biological interpretation. It is also consistent withthe commonly-used relationship between plant weight (w) anddensity (p), w–1 = a+bp. We show for carrots (Daucus carota L.) and red beet (Beta vulgarisL.), that the mean weights fitted by the model agree as wellwith the experimentally observed mean plot weight as those fittedby more complex models with more parameters, some of which arenot as general. We show also that the parameter c can be predictedfrom the time from sowing to harvest, with good results whentested on sets of data independent of those to which the modelhad been fitted. The assumptions on which the model is based,its application, and extensions to it are discussed. Treatment of developing antheridia of Pteridium aquilinum for24 h with radioactive and normal colchicine resulted in spermatocyteswith restitution nuclei, binucleate spermatocytes with multipleimmature blepharoplasts, and spermatids in which the organizationof the microtubular ribbon and basal bodies, and the shapingof the nucleus were seriously disturbed. The results indicatethat the coiling of the multilayered structure and the condensationof the chromatin, two key events in spermatogenesis, are independentof tubulin polymerization. Transitional stages were observed between the granular materialof the blepharoplast and microtubules. Colchicine affected theassembly of the cartwheel structure of the basal bodies lessthan that of the triplets, which were often rudimentary or absent.Autoradiographs were only partially successful because of thefailure to devise a satisfactory method of embedding by freeze-substitution,but there was clear evidence of colchicine binding by nucleiin young spermatocytes. During meiosis in naturally occurring triploid hybrids betweenthe diploid Orchis fuchsii Druce (2n = 4O) and the two tetraploids,O. purpurella Steph. and O. praetermissa Druce (2n = 8O), thereis a regular formation of 20 bivalents and 20 bivalents. Sincethe two tetraploid species themselves show typical ‘diploid’behaviour in synapsis and fertility, they are considered tobe allopolyploids, and the hybrid pairing to be allosyndetic.The implication is therefore that both tetraploids are amphidiploidsof which O. fuchsii has been one progenitor. It is suggestedthat varieties of the polytypic diploid O. latifolia L. sec.Pugsl. may have been the other progenitors. A feature of interestin the microsporogenesis of both parents and hybrids is theclose synchronization of nuclear events in the pollen massulae,which behave as physiological units throughout meiosis and pollen-mitosis.In the triploids, although numerous dysploid nuclei are produced,none dies prematurely, probably because of mutual compensationwithin what is, in effect, a common cytoplasmic matrix.  相似文献

Populations of Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. were collected fromthree habitat types (roadsides, lawns and paddy-fields) withineach of five climatic regions (arid, dry, intermediate, wetand hill country) in Sri Lanka. Further populations were collectedfrom forests and grasslands in the hill country. Most populations contained only tetraploid plants (2n = 36),but populations from roadsides and lawns in the wet region,and from forests in the hill country, contained only diploidplants (2n = 18). Populations from paddy-fields in the wet regioncontained both tetraploid and diploid plants. No triploid plantswere found in any environment, despite the fact that C. dactylonpredominantly reproduces vegetatively by both stolons and rhizomes.Soil acidity seems to be the main factor determining the distributionof the two cytotypes.Copyright 1995, 1999 Academic Press Cynodon dactylon (L.) Relationships between individual plant weight and net photosynthesisper day (G(t, x) function of plant weight) in plant populationsof various stand structures were simulated based on a canopyphotosynthesis model. The G(t, x) functions of plant weightare determined mainly by LAI (leaf area index), the relationshipbetween individual plant weight and leaf area, canopy structureand extinction coefficient. The concave relationship betweenindividual plant weight and leaf area at small LAI (<2),at small extinction coefficient (< 0.5), or at the canopystructure having the maximum leaf area density at the bottomproduces a concave G(t, x) function, which generates negativeskewness of plant weight. The linear relationship between individualplant weight and leaf area at large LAI (> 2) produces aconvex G(t, x) function, which generates positive skewness ofplant weight. These simulation results coincide with G(t, x)functions obtained experimentally and with the well-known phenomenonof stand dynamics in which skewness of plant weight becomesnegative in the early growth stage and then increases to a positivevalue as a stand grows and becomes crowded. Aster kantoensis, an endangered plant species, is endemic togravelly floodplains of a few large rivers in central Japan.In recent years, competitive exclusion by alien perennial grassesin its natural habitat has been suspected to be one of the majorfactors threatening this species. In the River Kinu, increasedshading by the perennial alien grass Eragrostis curvula reduceslight availability for A. kantoensis. To reveal the influenceof shading on the establishment and growth of A. kantoensisrosettes, the potential carbon gain of A. kantoensis in itsnatural habitat was estimated using microenvironmental dataand whole plant photosynthetic and respiratory responses tolight and temperature. Whole plant CO2exchange responses weremeasured with a specifically designed ‘double chamber’,which enabled measurement of the CO2gas exchange rates of thefoliage (F) and the culm (C; stem and roots) separately. Itwas demonstrated that in a plant with average C/F ratio, positivecarbon gain could be maintained only in the microsites wherethe relative PPFD (photosynthetically active photon flux density)was above 15 or 30% of unshaded conditions in early- or mid-summer,respectively. Increasing C/F ratio, caused by an increase inroot biomass as an adaptive response to drought, resulted ina large reduction in the carbon gain irrespective of microsite,weather and season. The high light requirement of A. kantoensisis interpreted as a cost of the morphological responses necessaryto avoid stresses characteristic of this gravelly floodplainhabitat.
