Feeding and locomotor activities of the Japanese catfish Plotosus japonicus under solitary condition were recorded to identify mechanisms controlling these behaviours. In the absence of food, the catfish showed nocturnal locomotor activity, but no feeding activity. Under ad libitum food conditions, both feeding and locomotor activities occurred during the dark period and were synchronized with light/dark (LD) cycles. Feeding activity lasted for 11–24 days when food was stopped after ad libitum food availability. Restricted food during the light phase produced both food-anticipatory and light-entrainable feeding activity. Furthermore, this condition produced weak food-anticipatory and light-entrainable locomotor activity. Under the light/light (LL) condition, restricted food produced food-anticipatory feeding and locomotor activities, suggesting that a food-entrainable oscillator controls both feeding and locomotor activities. However, under the LL condition, light-entrainable feeding and locomotor activities were not observed, suggesting that a light-entrainable oscillator controls both feeding and locomotor activities. During a restricted food schedule, LD cycle shifts resulted in disrupted synchronization of feeding activity onset in three of the four fish, but one fish showed synchronized feeding activity. These results suggest that the food- and the light-entrainable oscillator may control feeding and locomotor activities, respectively.  相似文献

This study compared independent effects of caffeine and aspirin on muscular endurance (repetitions), heart rate (HR), perceived exertion (RPE), and perceived pain index (PPI) during light resistance training bouts performed to volitional failure. It was hypothesized that the hypoalgesic properties of these ergogenic aids would decrease pain perception and potentially result in enhanced performance. College-aged men (n = 15) participated in a within-subjects, double-blind study with three independent, counterbalanced sessions wherein aspirin (10 mg x kg(-1)), caffeine (6 mg x kg(-1)), or matched placebo were ingested 1 hour before exercise, and RPE, HR, PPI, and repetitions (per set and total per exercise) were recorded at 100% of individual, predetermined, 12-repetition maximum for leg extensions (LE) and seated arm curls (AC). Repeated-measures analyses of variance were used for between-trial comparisons. Caffeine resulted in significantly greater (p < 0.05) HR (LE and AC), total repetitions (LE), and repetitions in set 1 (LE and AC) compared with aspirin and placebo. Aspirin resulted in significantly higher PPI in set 1 (LE). In LE, 47% of participants' performance exceeded the predetermined effect size (>or= 5 repetitions) for total repetitions, with 53% exceeding the effect size (>or= 2 repetitions) for repetitions in set 1 with caffeine (vs. placebo). In AC, 53% (total repetitions) and 47% (set 1 repetitions) of participants exceeded effect sizes with caffeine (vs. placebo), with only 13% experiencing decrements in performance (total repetitions). Aspirin also produced a higher PPI and RPE overall and in set 1 (vs. placebo). This study demonstrates that caffeine significantly enhanced resistance training performance in LE and AC, whereas aspirin did not. Athletes may improve their resistance training performance by acute ingestion of caffeine. As with most ergogenic aids, our analyses indicate that individual responses vary greatly.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the daily rhythm of locomotor activity in Rhamdia quelen (R. quelen). A total of 30 fish were enrolled in the study and were equally divided in 10 groups and maintained in 100 liters tanks. The locomotor activity was measured in fish maintained under the LD 12:12 photoperiod regime; thereafter, the LD cycle was reversed to DL in order to study the resynchronization and to explore the endogenous pacemaker. Subsequently, the fish were subjected to constant conditions of light to test whether or not locomotor rhythms are regulated by the endogenous circadian clock. The effect of increasing light length and intensity was studied on daily rhythm of locomotor activity of fish. Our results showed that the R. quelen is a strictly diurnal species, the rhythm of locomotory activity resynchronized quickly after inverting the LD cycle and persist under free course LL, suggesting a circadian origin. The light showed a significant masking effect often blocking the expression of the biological rhythm. The strictly diurnal behavior is controlled directly by the photoperiod and maintained even under very dim light (30 lux).  相似文献

Summary An apparatus was devised to record crowing (mate calling by males) together with locomotor activity and recorded data was analyzed by several methods for rhythm analysis. Crowing and locomotor activity of Japanese quail held on long days were recorded during sexual development as estimated from circulating gonadotropins and testosterone. Both behaviors were testosterone-dependent but commencement of crowing preceded the increase in locomotor activity. When the two behaviors attained their maximum levels, crowing showed consistent daily rhythms in which two peaks were apparent, a major one at the onset of light and a broader one 8 hours later. Locomotor activity also showed a clear daily rhythm with a peak between the two peaks of crowing rhythm suggesting a fixed phase relationship between the two rhythms. Both rhythms free-ran under constant dim light with periods shorter than 24 h. They persisted in birds which had been castrated and then supplied with exogenous testosterone via implanted Silastic capsules. The durations of both rhythms were quite comparable to each other and they maintained a fixed phase relationship similar to that found under LD cycles. The results indicate that testosterone is essential for the induction of crowing and for the enhancement of locomotor activity but the formation of the rhythms in behavior was strictly dependent on a circadian oscillatory mechanism.Abbreviations LH luteinizing hormone - FHS follicle-stimulating hormone - LD light-dark - LDim light-dim light  相似文献

A study was carried out to investigate the daily rhythms of locomotor and feeding activity of Khajoo, Schizothorax pelzami, a candidate species for freshwater aquaculture. Using self-feeder juvenile Khajoo were exposed to a 12/12 LD cycle to determine the rhythms of locomotor and feeding activity. The effects of feeding on locomotor and feeding activity of fish were also examined. Finally, the endogenous rhythmicity under different lighting condition tested. Fish displayed a strictly diurnal feeding and locomotor activities with 98% and 84% of the total activity occurred in the photophase, respectively. In scheduled feeding, both the L-group (fed in light) and the D-group (fed in the dark) showed a diurnal locomotor activity pattern. However, the L-group had a peak of locomotor activity near the feeding time, but the D-group had a scarce locomotor activity in the scatophase with no significant change at the mealtime. Most of the individuals display free-running rhythms when exposed to different lighting condition including, constant darkness, ultradian 45:45 min LD cycle and reversed DL photo cycle. Taken together the results of this study showed that both locomotor and feeding activity have diurnal rhythms in Khajoo S. pelzami, even fish feeding had taken place at night. Additionally, the free-running locomotor activity of the fish in the absence of external light stimuli, suggests the existence of an endogenous timing mechanism in this fish species.  相似文献

As both a photoreceptor and pacemaker in the avian circadian clock system, the pineal gland is crucial for maintaining and synchronizing overt circadian rhythms in processes such as locomotor activity and body temperature through its circadian secretion of the pineal hormone melatonin. In addition to receptor presence in circadian and visual system structures, high-affinity melatonin binding and receptor mRNA are present in the song control system of male oscine passeriform birds. The present study explores the role of pineal melatonin in circadian organization of singing and calling behavior in comparison to locomotor activity under different lighting conditions. Similar to locomotor activity, both singing and calling behavior were regulated on a circadian basis by the central clock system through pineal melatonin, since these behaviors free-ran with a circadian period and since pinealectomy abolished them in constant environmental conditions. Further, rhythmic melatonin administration restored their rhythmicity. However, the rates by which these behaviors became arrhythmic and the rates of their entrainment to rhythmic melatonin administration differed among locomotor activity, singing and calling under constant dim light and constant bright light. Overall, the study demonstrates a role for pineal melatonin in regulating circadian oscillations of avian vocalizations in addition to locomotor activity. It is suggested that these behaviors might be controlled by separable circadian clockworks and that pineal melatonin entrains them all through a circadian clock.  相似文献

Male crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus Degeer, turned lights on or off in a chamber by a seesaw device: (1) during a 12 h, and (2) during a 24 h day. The crickets in (1) and the last-instar nymph in (2) turned the lights on and off at irregular intervals and duration. The selection rate for darkness was greater than that for light by an average exceeding 80%. The locomotor activity of the nymph in (1) was arrhythmic. In (1) the adults stridulated and were active in continuous darkness during the 12 h, while, in contrast in (2) they turned on the light and stridulated without switching the light off. The locomotor and stridulatory activities of the adult crickets in (2) were free-running. These activities resulted in a free-running rhythm of selection for light or darkness in (2). Under the conditions of the present experiments, the circadian pacemaker functioned in the same way in light and dark cycles as in constant light conditions.  相似文献

Muscular vibration effects could usually persist after the end of the stimulation. The extinction of this after-effect was studied during human walk. Six subjects performed a locomotor task (six successive steps) under control, and after bilateral Achilles' tendon vibration (70 Hz). The step frequency was enhanced (diminution of the stance phase duration) whereas the stride length tended to decrease. The relative duration of the stance phase reached back normal values with repetitions. These results demonstrated that vibration-induced effects persevere after the end of the stimulation. In addition, owing to the dynamic of the re-adaptation process, they suggested that the muscular proprioceptive input could participate in both maintaining and regulating the locomotor rhythm.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms of body temperature, heart rate, and locomotor activity were observed in the unanesthetized and unrestrained Syrian hamsters, Djungarian hamsters and Chinese hamsters, and the differences in these biological characters among the three species of hamster were investigated. In each species, body temperature, heart rate, and locomotor activity in the dark period were higher than those in the light period. Heart rate of Chinese hamsters was higher than that of the others in both the light and dark periods. In addition, it was found that the body temperature of Djungarian hamsters decreased rapidly one time a day. These results show species differences in body temperature, heart rate and locomotor activity of Syrian, Djungarian and Chinese hamsters.  相似文献

When a light pulse of 1 h duration was given 3 h after lights off in a photoperiod of 11 h light : 13 h dark (LD 11 : 13) at 20°C, the phase of the major peak of locomotor activity rhythm in Delia antiqua was delayed for approximately 0.6 h. In contrast, it was advanced by approximately 0.6 h by a light pulse given 9 h after lights off. It is suggested that in the circadian clock, a pulse falling in the early scotophase is taken as a new dusk and a pulse falling in the late scotophase is taken as a new dawn. Although a sharply defined critical photoperiod did not exist in the diapause response to photoperiod in D. antiqua, the percentage of pupal diapause decreased by these pulses in LD 11 : 13 at 20°C. The effect of a 15 min light pulse on both locomotor activity rhythm and pupal diapause induction was stronger at 3 h than at 9 h after lights off, while a 1 min light pulse was ineffective at both times. The parallel effects of light pulse on locomotor activity rhythm and diapause response might be based on the same chronobiological functions.  相似文献

In dairy calves kept in pens, lack of sufficient space may inhibit the performance of play behaviour. The present study investigated, firstly, if an increase in space allowance increases the occurrence of play behaviour, and secondly, if calves kept at a low space allowance perform more locomotor play when released individually in a large novel area. A total of 96 dairy calves in six repetitions were housed in groups of four, in pens of either 4, 3, 2.2 or 1.5 m(2) per calf from 2 weeks of age. The occurrence of play behaviour in the home environment was recorded continuously for each individual calf during 24 h at 5, 7 and 9 weeks of age. Locomotor play decreased over the weeks (54, 29 and 19 s for weeks 5, 7 and 9, respectively; F(2,40)=17.98; P<0.001), and the interaction between space allowance and week tended to be significant (F(6,40)=1.96; P<0.10). At 5 weeks of age, calves kept at 4 or 3 m(2) per calf performed more locomotor play in the home environment than calves at 2.2 or 1.5 m(2) per calf (68, 74, 38 and 39 s for 4, 3, 2.2 and 1.5 m(2) per calf, respectively; F(3,15)=3.40; P<0.05), but in weeks 7 and 9, no effects of space allowance were found. In addition, the duration of locomotor play was recorded for all calves during an individual 10-min open-field test in a 9.6x4.8 m arena at 4 and 10 weeks of age. During the open-field test at 10 weeks of age, calves from pens with 1.5 m(2) per calf performed more locomotor play than calves on the remaining treatments (10, 9, 12 and 25 s for 4, 3, 2.2 and 1.5 m(2) per calf, respectively; F(3,15)=4.05; P<0.05). The present study shows that an increase in the available space increases the occurrence of locomotor play in the home environment at 5 weeks of age. It also shows that calves kept in pens with the smallest space allowance performed more locomotor play behaviour when released in a large arena at 10 weeks of age.  相似文献

Summary Locomotor activity of the river lamprey, Lampetra japonica, was investigated under a light-dark (LD 1212) cycle and under continuous dark conditions. Intact lampreys were entrained to the light:dark cycle. They were active mainly in the early half of the dark period and inactive in light period. The light:dark entrainment continued in 72.7% of lampreys after the removal of bilateral eyes, but additional pinealectomy made the entrainment disappear in all lampreys. When lampreys were pinealectomized with their eyes intact, light: dark entrainment was abolished in most cases. The results indicate that the pineal organ of the lamprey is a photoreceptive organ responsible for synchronizing locomotor activity to LD cycle. Under continuous dark conditions, the locomotor activity began to free-run with a period of 21.3 ± 0.9 h (mean ± SD, n = 53). This circadian rhythmicity was not affected by the removal of lateral eyes but was abolished by pinealectomy. The pineal organ appears to function as an oscillator, or as one of the oscillators, for the circadian locomotor rhythm of lampreys.Abbreviations DD continuous dark - LD light:dark  相似文献

Lycosa tarentula is a ground-living spider that inhabits a burrow where it awaits the appearance of prey or conspecifics. In this study, circadian rhythms of locomotor activity were examined as well as the ocular pathway of entrainment. Thirty-three adult virgin females were examined under constant darkness (DD); all of them exhibited robust circadian rhythms of locomotor activity with a period averaging 24.1h. Fourteen of these spiders were studied afterwards under an LD 12:12 cycle; they usually entrained to in the first or second day, even when the light intensity was as low as 1 lx. During the LD cycle, locomotor activity was generally restrained to the darkness phase, although several animals showed a small amount of diurnal activity. Ten males were also examined under LD; they were also nocturnal, but were much more active than the females. Seven females were examined under constant light (LL); under this they became arrhythmic. Except for the anterior median eyes (OMAs), all the eyes were capable of entraining the locomotor activity to an LD cycle. These results demonstrate that under laboratory conditions and low light intensities locomotor activity of Lycosa tarentula is circadian and in accordance with Aschoff's 'rule'. Only OMAs are unable to entrain the rhythm; the possible localization of circadian clock is therefore discussed.  相似文献

1. We examined the relative changes in light intensity that initiate night‐time locomotor activity changes in nymphs of the mayfly, Stenonema modestum (Heptageniidae). Tests were carried out in a laboratory stream to examine the hypothesis that nymphs increase their locomotion in response to the large and sustained reductions in relative light intensity that take place during twilight but not to short‐term daytime light fluctuations or a minimum light intensity threshold. Ambient light intensity was reduced over a range of values representative of evening twilight. Light was reduced over the same range of intensities either continuously or in discrete intervals while at the same time nymph activity on unglazed tile substrata was video recorded. 2. Nymphs increased their locomotor activity during darkness in response to large, sustained relative light decreases, but not in response to short‐term, interrupted periods of light decrease. Nymphs did not recognise darkness unless an adequate light stimulus, such as large and sustained relative decrease in light intensity, had taken place. 3. We show that nymphs perceive light change over time and respond only after a lengthy period of accumulation of light stimulus. The response is much lengthier than reported for other aquatic organisms and is highly adaptive to heterogeneous stream environments.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study was to compare the effect of 3 different rest intervals on multiple sets of the bench press exercise performed with heavy vs. light loads. Sixteen resistance-trained men performed 2 testing sessions each week for 3 weeks. During the first testing session each week, 5 consecutive sets of the bench press were performed with 80% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM) and with a 1-, 2-, or 3-minute rest interval between sets. During the second testing session each week the same procedures were repeated with 50% of 1RM. The total repetitions completed and the sustainability of repetitions were compared between rest conditions and between loads. For each load, resting 3 minutes between sets resulted in significantly greater total repetitions vs. resting 2 minutes (p = 0.000) or 1 minute (p = 0.000) between sets. However, the sustainability of repetitions was not significantly different between loads (p = 0.849). These results can be applied to weekly bench press workouts that undulate between heavy (i.e., 80% 1RM) and light (i.e., 50% 1RM) intensities. When the training goal is maximal strength development, 3 minutes of rest should be taken between sets to avoid significant declines in repetitions. The ability to sustain repetitions while keeping the intensity constant may result in a higher training volume and consequently greater gains in muscular strength.  相似文献

The effects of brief light pulses (1-60 min in duration) on the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity and/or the neuroendocrine-gonadal axis was investigated in male Djungarian hamsters. Exposure of hamsters free-running in constant darkness to a single 1-h pulse of light induced phase-dependent phase shifts in the rhythm of locomotor activity. The general shape of the "phase-response curve" was similar to that observed in other animals; phase-delays and phase-advances were induced by light pulses delivered in the early and late subjective night, respectively, while light pulses during the subjective day induced little or no phase-shift in the activity rhythm. Animals exposed for 7 days to 1-min of light during the night in animals otherwise exposed to 6L:18D resulted in increased levels of serum FSH and testicular weight. Daily exposure to two 1-h or two 10-min pulses of light (but not two 1-min pulses) for 10 days resulted in stable entrainment of the activity rhythm as well as testicular weight gains and serum FSH increases. When two 10-min pulses of light were presented 8 and 16 h apart, some animals showed a short-day entrainment pattern (i.e., locomotor activity confined to the long period of darkness) while other animals showed a long-day entrainment pattern (i.e., locomotor activity confined to the short period of darkness). Importantly, the stimulatory effects of light on neuroendocrine-gonadal activity were clearly dependent on the phase-relationship between the light pulses and the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

1. By the aid of a computer technique, the in situ variations in heart rate and locomotor activity were recorded continuously for 7 days in sixteen individuals of the crayfish, Astacus astacus (Linnaeus 1758), in association with natural changes in water temperature and light intensity.
2. All sixteen crayfish investigated were found to express circadian rhythmicity in heart rate with a periodicity of ≈ 24 h. For 88% of the animals investigated, rhythmicity was significant ( P < 0.05). Ninety‐three per cent of the crayfish showed circadian rhythmicity in locomotor activity with a 24 ± 2 h periodicity and, for 67% of the animals, this rhythmicity was significant ( P < 0.05). In general, the expression of circadian rhythms was associated with nocturnal behaviour, heart rates and locomotor activity levels being higher at night than by day.
3. A positive correlation was observed between heart rate and locomotor activity. Temperature and light intensity exerted positive and negative influences on heart rate in A. astacus , respectively.
4. In the first experiment, 84% of the variation in heart rate could be explained by the changes in locomotor activity, temperature and light intensity. In the second experiment 35% of the variation in the heart rate was explained using these parameters.  相似文献

The effects of intraperitoneally or intracerebrally (DA A-10 area) administered substance P (SP) on locomotor activity of rats were studied in an exact 12-h light/12-h dark cycle changing from dark to light at 6 a.m. SP was administered either at 11 a.m. (light phase, minimal locomotor activity) or at 7 p.m. (dark phase, maximal locomotor activity). The effects of 12.5 micrograms/kg SP intracerebral and 125 micrograms/kg SP intraperitoneal were very similar. In the light phase SP produces excitation but inhibition of locomotion in darkness. Hence, the effect of SP depends on the internal mechanisms controlling motor activity and tends to level off the spontaneous circadian oscillation. We found a long lasting SP effect during both the light and dark period. The present experiments led us to the conclusion that SP has a levelling effect on locomotor activity. Probably this effect might be explained as SP's action on the dopaminergic pathway or dopamine metabolism, because the dopamine content in neurons also has a circadian rhythm.  相似文献

We examined the effects of pinealectomy and blinding (bilateral ocular enucleation) on the circadian locomotor activity rhythm in the Japanese newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster. The pinealectomized newts were entrained to a light-dark cycle of 12 h light and 12 h darkness. After transfer to constant darkness they showed residual rhythmicity for at least several days which was gradually disrupted in prolonged constant darkness. Blinded newts were also entrained to a 12 h light/12 h dark cycle. In subsequent constant darkness they showed free-running rhythms of locomotor activity. However, the freerunning periods noticeably increased compared with those observed in the previous period of constant darkness before blinding. In blinded newts entrained to the light/dark cycle the activity rhythms were gradually disrupted after pinealectomy even in the presence of the light/dark cycle. These results suggest that both the pineal and the eyes are involved in the newt's circadian system, and also suggest that the pineal of the newt acts as an extraretinal photoreceptor which mediates the entrainment of the locomotor activity rhythm.Abbreviations circadian period - DD constant darkness - LD cycle, light-dark cycle - LD 12:12 light-dark cycle of 12 h light and 12 h darkness  相似文献
