Corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) is a 41-residue hypothalamic neuropeptide that has been shown to have potent behavioral effects in animals and has been implicated in clinical disorders in man. This review focuses on those aspects of the behavioral effects of CRH related to food-associated behaviors. The effects of CRH on food intake are compared with its effects on performances maintained by food presentation, and contrasted with the effects of CRH on performances maintained by other events. The effects of CRH antagonists and drugs that interact with the behavioral effects of CRH are also reviewed, particularly with respect to their direct effects on food intake. Lastly, data assessing the effects of CRH administration on central neurotransmitter levels are presented and compared with levels seen in clinical populations. The effect of CRH on food intake seen in animals is consistent with a putative role for CRH in clinical syndromes where appetite suppression is apparent. Since some of the effects of CRH on food intake are subject to pharmacological intervention, strategies directed at peptidergic mechanisms of psychiatric disorders should be explored.  相似文献

A phylogenetic definition of a taxon name associates that name with a clade through its reference to a particular ancestor and all of its descendants. Depending on one's perspective, phylogenetic definitions name either clades on the one true, but unknown, phylogeny, or components on cladograms (clades on hypotheses regarding the true phylogeny). Phylogenetic definitions do not contain enough information to identify components without a reference cladogram. As a result, (1) if clades are equated with components on cladograms, a phylogenetic definition may associate a taxon name with different clades on different cladograms, and (2) the inclusiveness, diagnostic synapomorphies, and distribution in time and space of the clade with a particular name can differ markedly depending on the phylogenetic hypothesis one chooses to adopt. This potentially unacceptable lability in the clade to which a name refers can be avoided by using a taxon name in conjunction with only phylogenetic hypotheses on which specific taxa are related in a particular fashion. This designated phylogenetic context can be described in an n-taxon statement that would be appended to the phylogenetic definition. Use of the taxon name would be considered inappropriate in conjunction with cladograms on which the relationships contradict those in the n-taxon statement. Whereas phylogenetic definitions stabilize the meaning of taxon names, designated phylogenetic contexts would stabilize the usage of those names.  相似文献

It has been repeatedly reported that the anxiolytic action of benzodiazepines in the elevated plus-maze test is abolished in rats that have received a single prior experience of the test apparatus (one-trial tolerance effect). To analyze whether the one-trial tolerance effect of chlordiazepoxide can be influenced by administration of chlordiazepoxide or buspirone on trial 1, male Wistar rats received an IP injection of vehicle, chlordiazepoxide (8 mg/kg) or buspirone (2.5 mg/kg) 30 min. before testing for 5 min. in the plus-maze (trial 1). Seventy-two hours later, the rats received vehicle or chlordiazepoxide 30 min. before the re-exposure to the plus-maze for 5 min. (trial 2). Groups injected with chlordiazepoxide or buspirone on trial 1 and with chlordiazepoxide on trial 2 showed an anxiolytic effect of chlordiazepoxide on trial 2, as opposed to rats injected with vehicle on trial 1 and with chlordiazepoxide on trial 2. As opposed to previous studies, the present results suggest that the influence of prior experience with the plus-maze on the anxiolytic action of chlordiazepoxide during re-exposure seems to depend critically on the drug state in which trial 1 is experienced. These results are discussed with respect to the hypothesis proposed to explain the phenomenon of one-trial tolerance.  相似文献

Physical exercise enhances a wide range of cognitive functions in humans. Running-induced cognitive enhancement has also been demonstrated in rodents but with a strong emphasis on tasks that require the hippocampus. Additionally, studies designed to identify mechanisms that underlie cognitive enhancement with physical exercise have focused on running-induced changes in neurons with little attention paid to such changes in astrocytes. To further our understanding of how the brain changes with physical exercise, we investigated whether running alters performance on cognitive tasks that require the prefrontal cortex and whether any such changes are associated with astrocytic, as well as neuronal, plasticity. We found that running enhances performance on cognitive tasks known to rely on the prefrontal cortex. By contrast, we found no such improvement on a cognitive task known to rely on the perirhinal cortex. Moreover, we found that running enhances synaptic, dendritic and astrocytic measures in several brain regions involved in cognition but that changes in the latter measures were more specific to brain regions associated with cognitive improvements. These findings suggest that physical exercise induces widespread plasticity in both neuronal and nonneuronal elements and that both types of changes may be involved in running-induced cognitive enhancement.  相似文献

Surround, a kaolin-based particle film formulation, and Sunspray oil, a mineral oil, were evaluated alone or in combination in choice and no-choice laboratory assays on melon leaves for repellency to adults of the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring. In no-choice tests, the number of adults and eggs on leaves did not significantly differ among the three treatments and the water control when materials were applied to either the tipper or lower leaf surface. Significantly fewer adults and eggs were found on treated leaves compared with water when materials were applied to both leaf surfaces. Application of Surround did not affect the oviposition pattern, with 80.2-88.5% eggs oviposited on lower surface. However, whiteflies oviposited more eggs (53.1-63.8%) on the upper compared with the lower surface when Sunspray oil or Surround + Sunspray oil was applied on the lower leaf surface and both leaf surfaces. When whiteflies were allowed to choose among leaves treated with different materials on the same leaf surface(s), significantly fewer adults and eggs were found on treated leaves compared with water-treated leaves, and more adults and eggs were found on leaves when the materials were applied to tipper versus lower or both surfaces. Leaves treated with materials on both leaf surfaces had fewer whiteflies compared with leaves treated on the upper or lower surface. When whiteflies were allowed to choose among leaves treated with materials versus water-treated leaves in a 6:3 or an 8:1 ratio, significantly fewer adults and eggs were found on leaves treated with treatment materials compared with water, regardless of which leaf surface(s) were treated. No significant synergistic or additive effect was detected in Surround + Sunspray oil compared with either material used separately.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to investigate the effects of a kaolin-based hydrophilic particle film, Surround WP, on the biology and behavior of the psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) and to assess population densities of D. citri in citrus subjected to monthly applications of Surround WP. Laboratory investigations indicated a 3% (wt:vol) suspension of Surround WP in water applied directly was not acutely toxic to eggs, older nymphs or adults. Presence of the dried particle film on leaves interfered with the ability of adults to grasp and walk on citrus leaves. During a 30-s period, adults spent an average of 5 s moving on leaves with particle film compared with 16 s on leaves without particle film. When leaves were inverted, a significantly higher percentage of adults fell or flew from treated leaves (53%) than untreated leaves (16%). In a 12-mo study investigating infestations of D. citri on citrus treated monthly with Surround WP, cumulative reductions of 78% in adult numbers on mature leaves and of 60% in adult numbers on flush shoots (immature leaves) were observed in treated trees compared with untreated trees. Numbers of eggs and nymphs per flush shoot were reduced by 85 and 78%, respectively, in trees treated with particle film. Reductions in infestation levels of D. citri in treated trees were attributed to the negative effects of the particle film on the ability of adults to grasp, move, and oviposit. The suppressive effects of a Surround treatment against adult psyllids were degraded by rain.  相似文献

基于美国科学情报研究所(ISI)科学引文索引(Science Citation Index, SCI)数据库, 对1989~2007年期间我国发表的菌根研究论文进行检索, 并采用文献计量方法对所获资料进行统计和趋势分析。结果表明, 1989~2007年间, 我国菌根学研究呈现不断上升趋势, 尤其是2000年之后, 增长速度明显加快。但只有5.22%的论文发表于影响因子大于5的刊物, 在研究深度上仍需进一步加强。半数以上的研究论文与丛枝菌根研究有关, 研究重点主要集中在菌根对植物的生理效应, 菌根与植物抗性  相似文献

Males and females from a heterozygous, resistant strain (SR) of the horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.), were tested for survival until reproductive maturity on steers with ear tags in outdoor, screened enclosures and on steers sprayed on the neck in an indoor isolation room. After 6 d, female SR flies on outdoor steers with one tag had 10 times greater survival than males; almost no SR flies on steers with two ear tags survived. Survival of male and female SR flies on steers sprayed on the neck was reduced during the first 24 h, but not thereafter. Lower survival of males compared with females on treated steers reflected differential survival of the sexes during exposure to treated cloths in a laboratory bioassay. Hair samples from neck, back, rump, and lower legs of steers with ear tags in outdoor pens were tested for toxicity to the SR flies. These bioassays indicated high localization of insecticide on the neck of steers with ear tags.  相似文献

Coffee leaf rust, caused by Hemileia vastatrix, is the most devastating disease of coffee. Since limited information is available in the literature on silicon (Si) affecting plant diseases in coffee, this study was designed to investigate foliar application of potassium silicate (PS), a source of soluble (Si), on infection process of coffee leaf rust at the microscopic level. The foliar Si concentration for plants sprayed with water and PS has no significant difference (0.24 and 0.30 dag kg?1, respectively). X‐ray microanalysis indicated that the deposition of Si on the leaves of the plants that were sprayed with PS was greater in comparison to the leaf samples from the plants sprayed with water. Rust severity on leaves of plants sprayed with water or sprayed with PS reached 44% and 32%, respectively, at 36 days after inoculation (dai). Plates of polymerised PS were observed on the leaf surfaces of the plants sprayed with the product, in contrast to its absence on the leaf surfaces of plants sprayed with water. At 36 dai, a greater number of uredia were observed on the leaf surfaces of plants sprayed with water in comparison to the leaf surfaces of plants sprayed with PS. On fractured leaf tissues that were sprayed with PS, less fungal colonisation was observed in comparison to the leaves of plants sprayed with water. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the effect of foliar‐applied Si on the control of the coffee leaf rust development may be attributed to the physical role of the polymerised PS, its osmotic effect against urediniospores germination, or both.  相似文献

Some membrane peptides, such as Alamethicin, form barrel-stave aggregates with a broad probability distribution of size (number of peptides in the aggregate). This distribution has been shown to depend on the characteristics of the lipid bilayer. A mechanism for this influence is suggested, in analogy to earlier work on the effects of changes in bilayer composition on conformational equilibria in membrane proteins, that is based on coupling of shifts in the distribution of lateral pressures in the bilayer to depth-dependent changes in the lateral excluded area that accompanies the formation of an aggregate. Thermodynamic analysis is coupled with a simple geometric model of aggregates of kinked cylindrical peptides and with results of previously calculated lateral pressure distributions to predict the effects of changes in bilayer characteristics on aggregate size distributions, in qualitative agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

Membrane filters (Millipore Corp.; pore sizes 1.2 to 0.22 mum) were placed on the surface of L-phase growth medium solidified with agar. The filter and the surrounding medium were inoculated with either protoplasts or stable broth-grown L-phase variants obtained from Streptococcus faecium strain F24. The L-phase inoculum gave rise to viable L-colonies on the filters and on the medium, whereas protoplasts gave colony formation only on the medium. However, when the Millipore filters were covered by a layer of solid L-phase medium, 75 mum or greater in depth, before inoculation with protoplasts, colony formation resulted but with atypical morphology. In contrast, inoculation of protoplasts on Nuclepore and Sartorius membrane filters did give rise to L-colonies on the surface and underneath the filters after 2 days of incubation at 37 C. Submicroscopic, viable L-phase elements produced during colony formation were capable of passing through membrane filters with pore channels as small as 0.22 mum; these elements required transfer from underneath the filters to fresh agar medium in order to develop into L-phase colonies. Membrane filters were also placed on the surface of L-phase growth medium solidified with gelatin. Inoculation of the filters and surrounding medium with a lysozyme-prepared protoplast suspension gave rise to streptococci on the surface of the filters and on the medium. However, inoculation with the stable broth-grown L-phase variants gave rise to atypical colonies on the medium and only small patches of abortive growth on the filters.  相似文献

The locomotory behavior of human blood neutrophil leukocytes was studied at a boundary between two surfaces with different chemokinetic properties. This was achieved by time-lapse cinematography of neutrophils moving on coverslips coated with BSA, then part-coated with immune complexes by adding anti-BSA IgG with a straight-line boundary between the BSA and the immune complexes. Cell locomotion was filmed in microscopic fields bisected by the boundary, and kinetic behavior was assessed by comparing speed (orthokinesis), turning behavior (klinokinesis), and the rate of diffusion of the cells on each side of the boundary, using a recently described mathematical analysis of kinesis. In the absence of serum or complement, the proportion of motile cells and their speed and rate of diffusion were greater on BSA than on antiBSA, but there was no consistent difference in turning behavior between cells on the two surfaces. The immune complexes were therefore negatively chemokinetic in comparison with BSA, and this resulted from a negative orthokinesis with little or no contribution from klinokinesis. As would be predicted theoretically, this resulted in gradual accumulation of cells on the immune complexes even in the absence of a chemotactic factor. In further studies, a parallel plate flow chamber was used to show that, under conditions of flow, neutrophils accumulated much more rapidly on a surface coated with BSA- anti-BSA than on BSA alone. Moreover, neutrophils on immune complex- coated surfaces lost their ability to form rosettes with IgG-coated erythrocytes. This suggests that neutrophils on immune complex-coated surfaces redistribute their Fc receptors (RFc gamma) to the under surface, and that the lowered speed of locomotion is due to tethering of neutrophils by substratum-bound IgG-Fc.  相似文献

ATP-dependent movement of actin filaments on smooth muscle myosin was investigated by using the in vitro motility assay method in which myosin was fixed on the surface of a coverslip in a phosphorylated or an unphosphorylated state. Actin filaments slid on gizzard myosin phosphorylated with myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) at a rate of 0.35 micron/s, but did not slide at all on unphosphorylated myosin. The movement of actin filaments on phosphorylated myosin was stopped by perfusion of phosphatase. Subsequent perfusion with a solution containing MLCK, calmodulin, and Ca2+ enabled actin filaments to move again. The sliding velocities on monophosphorylated and diphosphorylated myosin by MLCK were not different. Actin filaments did not move on myosin phosphorylated with protein kinase C (PKC). The sliding velocity on myosin phosphorylated with both MLCK and PKC was identical to that on myosin phosphorylated only with MLCK. Gizzard tropomyosin enhanced the sliding velocity to 0.76 micron/s. Gizzard caldesmon decreased the sliding velocity with increase in its concentration. At a 5-fold molar ratio of caldesmon to actin, the movement stopped completely. This inhibitory effect of caldesmon was relieved upon addition of excess calmodulin and Ca2+.  相似文献

The undeniable environmental benefits of wind energy are undermined by the negative effects of wind farms on bird populations through mortality by collision with the energy-generating structures. Studies have documented morphological, ecological, and behavioral traits associated with vulnerability to wind turbines. However, practically all studies have concentrated on the effects on particular populations, and community-level analyses are lacking. Here we assess the susceptibility of species on the basis of their morphology, and examine the effect of selective mortality on the topology and dispersion of phylogenies, and on the structure and volume of the ecological morphospace of bird assemblages. Using an extensive database of bird occurrences and fatalities in a wind farm located in southern Mexico, and performing null models to establish statistical significance, we compared sets of affected and unaffected species in terms of their wing morphology and position in a phylogeny. We found that birds more likely to fly in the risk zone tend to be smaller, with longer wings, and with heavier wing loadings. Within this group, species more likely to collide with blades and die are smaller, with short wings, and supporting lighter wing loadings. These patterns determine that the set of species less affected distribute in morphospace leaving noticeable holes (morphologies not represented). Birds flying in the risk zone tend to be related to each other, but species that actually collide with turbines belong to several separate clades. These differential effects on morphology and phylogenetic diversity pose important and complex challenges to the conservation of birds in areas where wind farms are being established.  相似文献

以长白山苔原带南坡植被为对象,通过植被调查,与北坡和西坡植被进行比较,研究长白山苔原植被因坡向差异导致的不同植被变化模式。结果显示:(1)长白山苔原南坡植被中灌木处于优势地位,与北坡、西坡情况一致。但在物种组成上,各坡向差异明显,为中度不相似水平;(2)在生物多样性、多度、盖度等群落特征上,南坡与西坡的差异较大、与北坡相似性较强;(3)在物种多样性的空间分布上,南坡与北坡相同,即随海拔升高呈单峰变化且峰值出现在中部,与西坡物种多样性随海拔升高呈单调递减的趋势完全不同。表明不同群落抗干扰能力以及所受干扰程度存在差异,北坡处于演替中后期,较为稳定,抗干扰能力更强。南坡因受干扰强度较小,植被处于较稳定状态;(4)长白山苔原各坡向植被变化差异较大。南坡和北坡的植被相对稳定,与西坡草本植物强烈上侵明显不同。长白山苔原带植被的坡向差异源于各坡向的本底差异、环境差异以及对全球气候变化的差异性响应,是火山、强风干扰下植被演替与响应气候变化的植被变化共同作用的结果。  相似文献

A randomized and cross-over design clinical study with normal adult volunteers examined the effects of a 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthrinse and a control rinse on a range of microflora including those implicated in halitosis on the tongue and saliva. Saliva and tongue scrapings were collected from 13 subjects prior to treatments with additional samples collected at 3 h post-treatment cultured on media to enumerate anaerobic, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, odorigenic bacteria producing hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and oral bacteria with proteolytic activity. In comparison to the control, rinsing with CHX demonstrated statistically significant reductions that ranged from 81-90% for tongue microflora with a 89-95% decrease noted on salivary flora (p<0.05). The effects of CHX on anaerobic, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are in accord with those noted on odorigenic bacteria producing H2S or proteolytic activity. These results help to explain previous clinical results on the malodor efficacy of CHX and highlight microbiological approaches for bacteria implicated in malodor.  相似文献

Chemical modification studies have been conducted on spinach ferredoxin to determine the nature of the groups on ferredoxin involved in its interaction with its reaction partners. Modification of a limited number (three or four) carboxyl groups or of the single histidine residue resulted in a decreased ability of ferredoxin to participate in NADP photoreduction but not in cytochrome c photoreduction, suggesting that these groups may be involved in interaction with ferredoxin:NADP reductase but are not involved in interaction with the reducing side of Photosystem I. In contrast, modification of amino groups or the single arginine residue on ferredoxin had little effect on the ability of ferredoxin to participate in NADP photoreduction, suggesting these groups are not involved in the interaction of ferredoxin with either ferredoxin:NADP reductase or the reducing side of Photosystem I. Attempts to modify tyrosine residues on ferredoxin resulted in destruction of the iron-sulfur center of the protein.  相似文献

On Svalbard, purple sandpipers forage on the shores when preparing for autumn migration to the European continent after a period of food shortage on the tundra in summer. Their food choice was studied on a beach when they were faced with the choice between two abundant prey species: a small collembolan (springtail) and a much larger amphipod. In spite of several times higher gain of energy when foraging on amphipops, the birds did not show a distinct preference for either of the two prey species in this situation. Alternative explanations for this behaviour are discussed. We suggest that this could be a consequence of adaptations to their summer diet on Svalbard, when they rely on Collembola as food to a considerable extent. Higher variance in energy gain rate when foraging on amphipods might also be important. Collembolan densities high enough to trigger predation from birds occurred only on some days, with cloudy calm weather. This, together with the possible existence of a dietary bottleneck, may reduce the cost associated with the switch to Collembola. Accepted: 25 April 1999  相似文献
