Although generalized habitat use may contribute to the success of invasive taxa, even species that are typically described as habitat generalists exhibit non‐random patterns of habitat use. We measured abiotic and biotic factors in 42 plots (each 100 × 10 m) along a 4.2‐km long unpaved road in tropical Australia, at a site that had been invaded by cane toads (Rhinella marina Bufonidae) seven years previously. We also counted anurans at night in each of these plots on 103 nights during the tropical wet season, over a five‐year period, beginning soon after the initial toad invasion. Spatial distributions differed significantly among adult male toads (n = 1047), adult female toads (n = 1222), juvenile toads (n = 342) and native frogs (Cyclorana australis Hylidae, n = 234). Adult male toads were closely associated with water bodies used as calling and/or spawning sites, whereas adult female toads and native frogs were most commonly encountered in drier forested areas on sloping ground. Juvenile toads used the margins of the floodplain more than conspecific adults did, but the floodplain itself was rarely used. Understanding which components of the habitat are most important to specific age and sex classes within a population, or how invasive species differ from native species in this respect, can clarify issues such as the spatial and temporal location of ecological impact by an invader, and the most effective places for control of the invader with minimal collateral effects on the native biota.  相似文献

The fecundities of Natterjack toads, Bufo calamita , on a Cumbrian dune system and a relict heathland site in Hampshire were compared and contrasted with the fecundity of Common toads, B. bufo , on the Cumbrian dunes. For both species, fecundity was positively correlated with length, while in B. calamita length was also correlated with size of eggs produced, and age of the female. Bufo calamita was found to invest more energy exponentially in egg production with increasing length, and therefore age. This species also laid more than twice as many eggs as comparably-sized female B. bufo , and some probably produced two clutches of spawn per year in southern England. The enhanced fecundity of the species was believed to be an adaptation to living in areas with unpredictable spawning sites. Small female B. bufo on the dunes appeared to put more energy into egg production when small than individuals of the same species on other habitat types in Britain, possibly as a result of reduced life expectancy on the dune habitat. There was a link between old age and the production of non-viable spawn in B. calamita , and males of this species which spawned at the end of the prolonged breeding season were found to have reduced fertilization efficiency when spawning on consecutive evenings.  相似文献

Some observations on the biology of Mastacembelus armatus (Lacepède) from Muzaffarnagar (U.P., India) have been made during the period July 1966 to June 1969. At a particular stage of maturity of the fish there is a close relationship between the gonad weight and the body weight which helps in determining the breeding period of the fish. Both male and female fishes mature simultaneously. The gonad weight influences the relative condition, while the visceral weight does not exert any significant effect on it. The development of the female gonads greatly affect the curve of relative condition, more than the development of male gonads, though the curve for male fish also shows a steady rise and fall in the seasonal variations of the relative condition. Seasonal fluctuations in relative condition correspond to its spawning season. In M. armatus , the presence of two peaks in the curve confirm two breeding seasons. The present studies have also elucidated to a certain extent the important aspect of the maturation and spawning habits of M. armatus in North India. The fish has two breeding seasons of short duration during June and July and again in November. The mature ovaries of each season contain slight maturing ova of next season along with mature ova of the present season. The entire stock of ova measuring 0.16 mm and above are shed during spawning.  相似文献

A slow transient electric potential change (electro-olfactogram, EOG) can be recorded through an Ag-AgCl electrode placed on the olfactory epithelium in response to stimulation with an air stream to the tissue in toads (Bufo japonicus). During the breeding season, oscillatory potential changes (OSC) superimpose on the EOG. In the present study the OSC amplitude was found to be highly correlated with the migratory behavior. Since toads track the route to and from the breeding pond using olfactory cues along the migration route, the enhanced OSC should be responsible for the breeding migration.A significant positive correlation was found between plasma gonadotropin levels and the OSC amplitude in males captured during the breeding migration. There was no significant relationship between plasma gonadotropin levels and the OSC amplitude in female toads during the breeding season, but there was a significant correlation between plasma progesterone levels and the OSC amplitude. In males, hypophysectomy just before the breeding season decreased the OSC amplitude. And testis weight was also positively correlated with the OSC amplitude in January. These results suggest that the appearance of the OSC is related to the timing of the activation of the reproductive system. However, treatment of toads with hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), testosterone, estradiol or progesterone in the non-breeding season did not induce a significant change in the OSC amplitude. Other factor or factors may be required in activation of the olfactory system of the toad in a non-reproductive stage together with the hormones of the gonadal axis.  相似文献

A series of ponds in the Wear Valley in northern England, ranging in altitude from 46 to 838 m, were visited regularly over a four-year-period, and a record was kept of the dates on which spawn from the Common frog, Rana temporaria , was first seen in each of the ponds. On average. spawning was delayed by six days for every 100 m increase in altitude. The date of spawning at each of the ponds was fairly consistent from year to year; only in 1974 was the date of spawning noticeably different from other years. A theory was proposed which could account for the variation in the date of spawning with altitude and the annual variation in the date of spawning, observed in the present study. It is proposed that frogs from nothern England become sensitive to environmental temperature in the middle of February and emerge in the spring after experiencing a temperature-sum of 106 degree(C)-days. The onset of temperature sensitivity is probably initiated by a circannual endogenous rhythm. The time at which the rhythm switches on the temperature-sensing mechanism in frogs probably varies in different populations, and may well be locally adapted. For spawning to follow emergence, a certain minimum water temperature may be required. In the present study, most frogs in the wild spawned when the water temperature in the ponds was above 7°C, but frogs could spawn at 3·1°C. Alternative theories for the control of emergence and spawning are also discussed.  相似文献

Activities of key testicular androgenic enzymes [Δ(5), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (Δ(5), 3β-HSD) and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17β-HSD)], plasma levels of testosterone, and testicular gametogenic activities were studied in heat-exposed adult male toads during hibernating season for two consecutive years. Exposure of toads to an elevated environmental temperature for 14 and 21 days resulted in significant elevation of testicular Δ(5), 3β-HSD and 17β-HSD activities, along with plasma levels of testosterone. Testicular gametogenic activity, by means of quantity of all stages of spermatogenic cycle, were elevated significantly at the same experimental schedule, but 7 days of heat exposure resulted in significant elevation only in stage IV. The results indicated that environmental temperature is an important modulator of breeding activities of male toads. It also demonstrated that testicular activities in seasonally breeding toads are probably not linked to hibernating cycle.  相似文献

Reproductive behavior affects spatial population structure and our ability to manage for sustainability in marine and diadromous fishes. In this study, we used fishery independent capture-based sampling to evaluate where Common Snook occurred in Tampa Bay and if it changed with spawning season, and passive acoustic telemetry to assess fine scale behavior at an inlet spawning site (2007–2009). Snook concentrated in three areas during the spawning season only one of which fell within the expected spawning habitat. Although in lower numbers, they remained in these areas throughout the winter months. Acoustically-tagged snook (n = 31) showed two seasonal patterns at the spawning site: Most fish occurred during the spawning season but several fish displayed more extended residency, supporting the capture-based findings that Common Snook exhibit facultative catadromy. Spawning site selection for iteroparous, multiple-batch spawning fishes occurs at the lifetime, annual, or intra-annual temporal scales. In this study we show colonization of a new spawning site, indicating that lifetime spawning site fidelity of Common Snook is not fixed at this fine spatial scale. However, individuals did exhibit annual and intra-seasonal spawning site fidelity to this new site over the three years studied. The number of fish at the spawning site increased in June and July (peak spawning months) and on new and full lunar phases indicating within population variability in spawning and movement patterns. Intra-seasonal patterns of detection also differed significantly with sex. Common Snook exhibited divergent migration tactics and habitat use at the annual and estuarine scales, with contingents using different overwintering habitat. Migration tactics also varied at the spawning site at the intra-seasonal scale and with sex. These results have important implications for understanding how reproductive behavior affects spatio-temporal patterns of fish abundance and their resilience to disturbance events and fishing pressure.  相似文献

Many male frogs and toads possess sexually dimorphic skin glands (breeding glands). However, in most anuran species, the functional significance of the glands is unknown. Here we show that the breeding glands of male dwarf African clawed frogs (Hymenochirus sp. ) release a mate-attractant chemosignal. The mate-attractant activity was assessed using a two-choice aquatic Y-maze. Female Hymenochirus were allowed to choose between different treatment waters (e.g., plain water and water housing males) in the upstream arms of the maze, and the females' movements were monitored by computer-linked motion sensors. Females showed a positive chemotaxis to water housing males and to water containing homogenized breeding glands. Females showed no reaction to water housing conspecific females or to water housing breeding gland-ablated males. Additional choice tests demonstrated that females were more attracted to water housing males than to water housing females and to water containing homogenized breeding glands than to water housing breeding gland-ablated males. Males in the maze showed no response to water housing either females or other males, indicating that the attractant is specific for females and is therefore neither a species aggregation signal nor a food-related attractant. These results represent the first experimental demonstration of a mate-attractant function for anuran breeding glands. Because many anuran species possess breeding glands, these results suggest that pheromonal communication could be more widespread among frogs and toads than previously believed.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive behavior of damselfish,Chromis notata, was studied at Mukaishima Island, Seto Inland Sea of Japan. Spawning occur synchronously among the fish in the study area except during a part of the breeding season. Neither spawnings nor hatchings, however, coincide with any particular phase of the lunar or tidal cycle. The intervals between the spawning peaks vary considerably during the breeding season. These results support the hypothesis that synchrony of breeding is facilitated by social interactions among the fish of a local area. The male inter-spawning intervals, and even the intervals between last spawning and next nesting, are longer than the female inter-spawning intervals in the beginning of breeding season. This delay of male spawning is attributed to the long incubation period and may have an influence on the male reproductive success.  相似文献

Abstract Despite widespread concern about the ecological impacts of invasive species, mechanisms of impact remain poorly understood. Cane toads (Chaunus [Bufo] marinus) were introduced to Queensland in 1935, and have now spread across much of tropical Australia. One plausible impact of toad invasion concerns competition between toads and native frogs, but there has been no previous experimental evaluation of this possibility. We examined interactions between toads and a morphologically similar species of native frog (Cyclorana australis) by manipulating toad and frog densities within large outdoor enclosures beside a floodplain in the wet‐dry tropics of the Northern Territory. Toads differed from frogs significantly in dietary composition and feeding rates, even in comparisons controlling for body‐size differences between these two taxa. Perhaps reflecting the abundant insect biomass, manipulating anuran densities or the presence of the putatively competing species did not influence food intake or dietary composition. However, the presence of toads suppressed activity levels of native frogs. The degree to which the invasion of cane toads influences attributes such as the activity levels, food intake and dietary composition of native frogs warrants further study, but our study suggests that competitive effects are likely to be minor compared with other pathways (such as direct poisoning during ingestion attempts) by which toads can affect frog populations.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the role of adrenals in gonadal activity in the male toad during the breeding season. Exogenous administration of corticosterone or metapyrone for 6 days inhibited adrenal delta5-3beta(delta 5-3 beta) hydroxysteroid (delta5-3beta-HSD) and testicular 17beta (17 beta) hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17beta-HSD) activities, decreased the serum levels of testosterone and inhibited spermatogenesis. When toads were treated with corticosterone a significant rise of serum corticosterone was noted while metapyrone treatment appeared to decrease serum corticosterone levels. It is concluded that adrenocortical hormone plays an indirect role in testicular activity in toads during the breeding season.  相似文献

Abstract Spawning sites are a critical and often scarce resource for aquatic‐breeding amphibians, including invasive species such as the cane toad (Bufo marinus). If toads select spawning sites based on habitat characteristics, we can potentially manipulate those characteristics to either enhance or reduce their suitability as breeding sites. We surveyed 25 spawning sites used by cane toads, and 25 adjacent unused sites, in an area of tropical Australia recently invaded by these feral anurans. Water chemistry (pH, conductivity, salinity, turbidity) was virtually identical between the two sets of waterbodies, but habitat characteristics were very different. Toads selectively oviposited in shallow pools with gradual rather than steep slopes, and with open (unvegetated) gradually sloping muddy banks. They avoided flowing water, and pools with steep surrounds. In these respects, cane toads broadly resemble previously studied toad species in other parts of the world, as well as conspecifics within their natural range in South America.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchies play an important role in access to mates or resources in many species. Rank is sometimes correlated with circulating testosterone levels or morphological traits such as body weight. The relationship of glucocorticoid secretion and rank, however, is less clear. In this study, we investigated the relationship of male rank to body weight, circulating testosterone and cortisol concentrations in captive possum triads (Trichosurus vulpecula). We carried out two experiments to examine hierarchy formation and the effects of castration of the dominant male during the non‐breeding season. A third experiment measured the effects of removal of the dominant male from a stable hierarchy during the breeding season. We found that dominant male rank was significantly correlated with higher circulating testosterone levels during periods of hierarchy formation and during the breeding season but not during periods of hierarchy stability in the non‐breeding season. Lack of correlation between plasma testosterone concentration and rank after male castration suggests that stable social rank is not dependent on hormone level and may be more dependent on behavioural traits. Any biocontrol measures that rely on manipulation of hormone levels may be unreliable when applied to unstable hierarchical situations, including the establishment of territories by subadult males, and the pre‐breeding season when circulating testosterone concentrations peak in males and a period of hierarchy establishment may occur.  相似文献

The study investigated the ecophysiological differences between populations of the Common frog( Rana temporaria L.) from different altitudes in northern England. Frog embryos in upland northern ponds experience very low temperatures during the period of embryonic development. These embryos were found to have a lower lethal limit for 50% normal development of2–8 °C, compared with3–8 °C for lowland embryos. These values are below most of the lower limiting temperature estimates previously obtained for R. temporaria . Embryos from upland ponds developed faster at low temperatures than embryos from lowland ponds. This may be an adaptation to the shorter growing season and lower temperatures at higher altitudes. Upland female frogs were found to be shorter and produced fewer eggs than lowland females. The differences found between lowland and upland frogs are discussed in terms of their potential adaptive significance.  相似文献

Male chorusing behaviour was studied in a population of common toads (Bufo bufo) on the island of Öland south Sweden, and the functional role of male advertisement calling in this species was experimentally examined. Calling males were larger and heavier than non-calling males (t = 2.41, p < 0.025 and t = 2.36, p < 0.025, respectively). However, small males were also found to call. This indicates that large males persisted in calling for longer and/or called more often. The proportion of calling males decreased as population size increased during the breeding season, indicating that calling is a low density strategy. Females responded more readily to calls than males. There were insufficient data to determine if the dominant frequencies of advertisement calls were inversely correlated with male body size, however, this relationship was found for the similar release calls. Females were found not to discriminate between high and low frequency calls, but when given a choice between two calls of different sound pressure levels (SPL), females were attracted to the louder calls. Thus, the function of chorusing is to advertise the position of males to mate-seeking females when the population density is low.  相似文献

The longevity of original scales and the process and consequences of scale regeneration in the euryhaline Common goby, Pomatoschistus microps (Kroyer), has been studied by monthly sampling of two populations. Scale regeneration comprises four stages: formation of a new growth centre, a regenerated area in the form of a wide central irregular area lacking concentric circuli: formation of short and widely spaced circuli at the outermost region of the regenerated area: a check in regenerated scale growth on reaching the size of the original scales: and the commencement of normal growth similar to that of the surrounding original scales. Growth of regenerated scales within 30 days was not sufficient to attain the same size of the original ones. The average percentage of regenerated scales in successive months during the life span of P. microps is about 20% in immature fish and sharply increases up to about 60% of the total scales during the breeding season. The correlation between sharp increases in regenerated scales and the breeding season is also confirmed on examining scales from two other gobioid species, Gobius paganellus and Gobius cobitis. It is suggested that the loss of a large number of scales may result in the check in body growth during the breeding season.  相似文献

The invasion of a toxic prey type can differentially affect closely related predator species. In Australia, the invasive Cane Toad (Rhinella marina) kills native anurophagous predators that cannot tolerate the toad’s toxins; but predators that are physiologically resistant (i.e., belong to lineages that entered Australia recently from Asia, where toads of other species are common) have been more resilient. In the current study, we examine the case of an Asian-derived predator lineage that relies on behavioural not physiological adaptations to deal with toads. Despite their Asian origins, Common Tree Snakes (Dendrelaphis punctulatus) are highly sensitive to toad toxins; yet this snake has not declined in abundance due to toads. We exposed captive (field-collected) snakes to toads of different sizes and ontogenetic stages, to quantify feeding responses and outcomes. Tree Snakes were less likely to attack toads than to attack native frogs, and rarely retained their hold on large toads. Tree Snakes ingested frogs of a wide range of body sizes but only ingested very small toads (<?1 g vs. up to 30 g for frogs). Behavioural responses were virtually identical between Tree Snakes from invaded versus yet-to-be-invaded areas, suggesting that preadaptation (from Asia) rather than adaptation (within Australia) is the key to successful utilisation of this novel but potentially toxic prey resource. Nonetheless, a previously-documented shift in relative head sizes of Tree Snakes coincident with toad invasion suggests that the ancestral behavioural tactic may have been reinforced by a recent morphological shift that further reduces maximal prey size, and hence the risk of fatal poisoning.  相似文献

Invasive species can affect the ecosystems they colonize by modifying the behaviour of native taxa; for example, avoidance of chemical cues from the invader may modify habitat use (shelter site selection) by native species. In laboratory trials, we show that metamorphs of most (but not all) native frog species on a tropical Australian floodplain avoid the scent of invasive cane toads (Bufo marinus Linnaeus 1758). Cane toads also avoid conspecific scent. This response might reduce vulnerability of metamorph frogs and toads to larger predatory toads. However, similar avoidance of one type of pungency control (garlic), and the presence of this avoidance behaviour in frogs at the toad invasion front (and hence, with no prior exposure to toads), suggest that this may not be an evolved toad‐specific response. Instead, our data support the simpler hypothesis that the metamorph anurans tend to avoid shelter sites that contain strong and unfamiliar scents. Temporal and spatial differences in activity of frogs versus toads, plus the abundance of suitable retreat sites during the wet season (the primary time of frog activity), suggest that avoiding toad scent will have only a minor impact on the behaviour of native frogs. However, this behavioural impact may be important when environmental conditions bring toads and frogs into closer contact.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between the breeding tubercle ornamentation (i.e. skin roughness) and male pre‐spawning dominance and courtship behaviour in roach (Rutilus rutilus) within an experimental laboratory system. Sexually mature fish were caught during their migration to their spawning pond and their behaviours were studied in an artificial spawning arena. Males behaved naturally both in terms of male–male interactions and attempts to achieve spawnings. Males having many, large breeding tubercles (i.e. rough skin) were significantly more often dominant in our dyadic trials than those with smooth skin. The dominant male in the trial exhibited a more active courtship behaviour than its subordinate rival. Papilloma skin disease did not affect the dominance rank. As a result of the relationship between skin roughness and male dominance, breeding tubercles may be used by the females as a cue for choosing a high‐quality mate in a roach lek. Thus, breeding tubercles might offer a workable tool for examination of sexual selection among cyprinids.  相似文献
