The number of species‐rich seminatural grasslands in Northern Europe has decreased significantly due to the abandonment of traditional land use practices. To preserve these habitats, an increasing number of abandoned and overgrown grasslands have been restored by cutting down trees and shrubs and reintroducing grazing. These practices are considered a useful tool to recover the species richness of vascular plants, but their impact on other taxa is hardly known. Here we studied ants as one important group of grassland insects. We investigated (1) the effects of restoration of nongrazed and afforested seminatural grasslands, compared to continuously managed reference sites; and (2) the modulating impacts of habitat characteristics and time elapsed since restoration. We found a total of 27 ant species, 11 of these were characteristic of open habitats and seven characteristic of forests. Neither species richness per site nor the number of open‐habitat species, nor the number of forest species differed between restored and reference sites. Yet, within the restored sites, the total species richness and the number of open‐habitat species was positively related to the time since restoration and the percentage of bare rock. High frequencies of most open‐habitat species were associated with low vegetation, older restored sites, and reference sites. Most forest species showed their highest frequencies in tree‐ and shrub‐dominated habitat. We conclude that restoration efforts have been successful in terms of retrieving species richness. A regular and moderate grazing regime subsequent to the restoration is suggested in order to support a high abundance of open‐habitat species.  相似文献

Native grasslands are one of the most endangered ecosystems in south eastern Australia. Conservation of grassland remnants and development of effective indicator groups to monitor their quality is a high priority. Recent surveys of epigaeic invertebrates have revealed several candidate groups for this. Ants are a popular focal group for invertebrate surveys in the region. The ant species richness and functional groups on four series of grassland sites in Victoria suggest that small scale heterogeneity is sufficiently high that the predictive indicator values of ants are limited, and that ants may not be sufficiently sensitive to floristic change to employ them alone in monitoring grassland condition in the region.  相似文献

Restoration science is a relatively young branch of ecology that is growing in importance owing to the sheer scale and trend of habitat degradation worldwide and the range of strong benefits that it is seen to potentially carry. Although spearheaded mainly by developed countries, its usefulness at least for the conservation of biodiversity may be greatest in the developing world. Here we examine how Mauritius, a developing island nation that may be regarded as well equipped among developing countries in terms of access to restoration science, is using science to inform the ecological restoration of its degraded native habitats for biodiversity conservation. While Mauritius is known for a number of proactive and at times innovative approaches that may even be setting the pace worldwide, we found that the restoration activities which are impacting the largest areas and an overwhelming proportion of native biodiversity of the country sometimes remain averse to even basic ecological principles. This includes the removal from restoration areas of fast growing native pioneer species with proven nurse‐tree potential to be replaced by a multitude of nursery grown and much slower growing plants that would have naturally grown anyway. Besides representing setbacks to areas undergoing restoration, this elevates restoration costs in the face of scarcity of conservation resources and urgency to restore more than the tiny and isolated areas currently targeted. Research worldwide continues to improve restoration science but blockages to knowledge transfer can seriously undermine its impact where it is most needed.  相似文献

Modelling metapopulation dynamics is a potentially very powerful tool for conservation biologists. In recent years, scientists have broadened the range of variables incorporated into metapopulation modelling from using almost exclusively habitat patch size and isolation, to the inclusion of attributes of the matrix and habitat patch quality. We investigated the influence of habitat patch and matrix characteristics on the metapopulation parameters of a highly endangered lizard species, the New Zealand endemic grand skink (Oligosoma grande) taking into account incomplete detectability. The predictive ability of the developed zxmetapopulation model was assessed through cross-validation of the data and with an independent data-set. Grand skinks occur on scattered rock-outcrops surrounded by indigenous tussock (bunch) and pasture grasslands therefore implying a metapopulation structure. We found that the type of matrix surrounding the habitat patch was equally as important as the size of habitat patch for estimating occupancy, colonisation and extinction probabilities. Additionally, the type of matrix was more important than the physical distance between habitat patches for colonisation probabilities. Detection probability differed between habitat patches in the two matrix types and between habitat patches with different attributes such as habitat patch composition and abundance of vegetation on the outcrop. The developed metapopulation models can now be used for management decisions on area protection, monitoring, and the selection of translocation sites for the grand skink. Our study showed that it is important to incorporate not only habitat patch size and distance between habitat patches, but also those matrix type and habitat patch attributes which are vital in the ecology of the target species.  相似文献

Planning for resilience is the focus of many marine conservation programs and initiatives. These efforts aim to inform conservation strategies for marine regions to ensure they have inbuilt capacity to retain biological diversity and ecological function in the face of global environmental change--particularly changes in climate and resource exploitation. In the absence of direct biological and ecological information for many marine species, scientists are increasingly using spatially-explicit, predictive-modeling approaches. Through the improved access to multibeam sonar and underwater video technology these models provide spatial predictions of the most suitable regions for an organism at resolutions previously not possible. However, sensible-looking, well-performing models can provide very different predictions of distribution depending on which occurrence dataset is used. To examine this, we construct species distribution models for nine temperate marine sedentary fishes for a 25.7 km(2) study region off the coast of southeastern Australia. We use generalized linear model (GLM), generalized additive model (GAM) and maximum entropy (MAXENT) to build models based on co-located occurrence datasets derived from two underwater video methods (i.e. baited and towed video) and fine-scale multibeam sonar based seafloor habitat variables. Overall, this study found that the choice of modeling approach did not considerably influence the prediction of distributions based on the same occurrence dataset. However, greater dissimilarity between model predictions was observed across the nine fish taxa when the two occurrence datasets were compared (relative to models based on the same dataset). Based on these results it is difficult to draw any general trends in regards to which video method provides more reliable occurrence datasets. Nonetheless, we suggest predictions reflecting the species apparent distribution (i.e. a combination of species distribution and the probability of detecting it). Consequently, we also encourage researchers and marine managers to carefully interpret model predictions.  相似文献

A DNA mutation in a protein coding gene which causes an amino acid change can be classified as conservative or radical depending on the magnitude of the physicochemical difference between the two amino acids: radical mutations involve larger changes than conservative mutations. Here, I examine two key issues in determining whether radical and conservative substitution rates are useful statistics in molecular evolution. The first issue is whether such rates can be estimated reliably, and for this purpose I demonstrate considerable improvements achieved by simple modifications to an existing method. The second issue is whether conservative and radical substitution rates can tell us something about selection on protein function. I address this problem by estimating positive and negative selection on conservative and radical mutations using polymorphism and divergence data from Drosophila. These analyses show that negative selection, but not positive selection, differs significantly between conservative and radical mutations. The power of conservative and radical substitution rates in testing the nearly neutral theory of molecular evolution is illustrated by the analysis of two mammalian datasets.  相似文献

Background

Food allergies are a major component of the burden of allergic disease. Accurate risk assessment for prediction of future clinical reactivity or clinical tolerance is limited by currently available techniques. Recent studies suggest that constitutively elevated global serum levels of IL-10, a cytokine that down-regulates both Th1 and Th2 cytokine production, may be useful in identifying human clinical tolerance to foods.

Objective

Determine the usefulness of constitutive IL-10 levels as a marker of clinical tolerance to peanut in children and adults.

Methodology/Principal Findings

107 subjects who were clinically tolerant to peanut and 94 subjects who were clinically allergic to peanut participated. Plasma was analyzed via ELISA to quantify the frequency of individuals with constitutive IL-10 levels and the intensity of those responses. The data were then stratified by age, gender and clinical status to assess the utility of this putative biomarker in specific at-risk groups. All 201 subjects had readily quantified plasma IL-10. Levels were no higher in subjects who were clinically tolerant to peanut than those in individuals clinically allergic to peanut. Stratification by age, gender or both did not improve the capacity of IL-10 levels to identify clinical tolerance to peanut.

Conclusions/Significance

Plasma IL-10 levels are neither a useful biomarker of clinical tolerance to peanut nor a potential tool for identification of clinical tolerance to peanut in humans.  相似文献

Milky white, brown, yellow and pink sugar grains along with normal sugar grains in equal number were offered to the ants at different sites, in the foraging ground of a garden locating at Garia, Kolkata, India to note the role of colouration of the food in food selection, if any. It is revealed that the ants Anoplolepis gracilipes procured all the supplied colour sugar grains from the offered sites between 1 and 43 min and the normal sugar grains between 1 and 38 min from the offered sites. Results of statistical analyses clearly indicate that the colour of the food has no role to attract the ants A. gracilipes in respect to procurement times of the sugar grains noted. This suggests that the colour of the food does not act as an attractant for the ants A. gracilipes in food selection.  相似文献

Theoretical models emphasize the importance of considering the composition, structure, and functioning of an ecosystem when restoring it. However, there is a lack of empirical studies evaluating how these ecosystem attributes are linked, if any, to the success of restoration actions. We conducted experimental plantings of the native late‐successional shrub Pistacia lentiscus in 10 semiarid steppes located in southeast Spain and related seedling survival rates to measures of ecosystem structure and composition and to surrogates of ecosystem functioning. Seedling survival widely differed among the studied steppes and 17 months after planting ranged from 0 to 89%. Mortality occurred mostly during the first summer in the field, coinciding with a strong drought lasting 3 months. Survival was lower in the steppes located at the highest altitudes and with the highest values of total plant cover, species richness, shrub cover, and functionality. Seedling survival was mainly controlled by abiotic conditions and showed a negative relationship with some of the surrogates of ecosystem functioning evaluated. Our results suggest, but cannot confirm, that the functional status of the ecosystem may not limit the early stages of establishment of P. lentiscus in semiarid steppes and that abiotic conditions play an overriding role in this process. If true, its introduction in these areas would not necessarily need a previous phase of recovery of ecosystem functions like nutrient cycling and infiltration.  相似文献

1. Free radical-dependent lipid peroxidation processes have long been thought to contribute to brain damage following stroke or cerebral ischemia/reperfusion.2. The preponderance of evidence for this belief has been derived indirectly, through diminution of tissue injury indices (e.g., brain infarct volume) facilitated by application of free radical scavenger substances.3. Direct, unequivocal evidence for lipid peroxidation in terms of classical assays (detection of conjugated diene absorbance or thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) is considerably less common, and its validity can be questioned.4. Correlations of treatment-induced diminishment of brain injury indices with reductions in lipid peroxidation level are rarer still.5. Reasons underlying the disparity between the belief that lipid peroxidation contributes to ischemic brain injury and direct evidence for this contribution (at least acutely) are proposed, along with evidence that new methods are being developed which should provide the basis for obtaining a definitive answer.  相似文献

No consensus exists as to the most sensitive and specific obesity indicator associated with metabolic risk factors. We aimed to validate anthropometry as the predictor for obesity-related metabolic risk factors through comparison with direct body composition measures in Korean adults. A total of 995 Korean women and 577 Korean men who participated in the Healthy Twin study were the subjects. Anthropometric measurements included BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHTR). Direct body composition measures included the percentage of body fat (%BF) measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanners and bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA). The following criteria were used to define abnormal metabolic risk factors: blood pressure > or = 130/85 mm Hg, fasting glucose (> or = 100 mg/dl), insulin (> or = 25 microU/ml), homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) (> or = 2.61), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (<40 mg/dl for men or <50 mg/dl for women), triacylglycerol (> or = 150 mg/dl), uric acid (>7 mg/dl for men or >6 mg/dl for women), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (> or = 2.11 mg/l). In multiple regression analyses (adjusted for age, education, smoking, alcohol, exercise and past/current medical history, and treated families as a random effect), WC, WHTR, and BMI were consistently associated with all metabolic risk factors regardless of the subject's gender. Some of the areas under the receiver-operating characteristic curves regarding abnormal metabolic risk factors were significantly higher for the three indicators of central obesity than for %BF. Our study validates the usefulness of anthropometry over direct body fat measures to predict metabolic risks.  相似文献

Ants frequently interact with fleshy fallen diaspores (fruits or seeds) not adapted for ant‐dispersal. Such interactions are usually considered as opportunistic, but recent evidence has indicated that these ants may differ in their effects on diaspore survival and plant recruitment. We investigated if partner choices are recognizable among genera of ants and plants, and if ant and plant traits may influence such preferences in cerrado (savanna‐like vegetation) from southeast Brazil. During a 2‐yr period, 521 ant–diaspore interactions were recorded through various methods, yielding 71 ant species and 38 plant species. Exploitation of fallen diaspores was common among several ant genera, and included carnivorous, omnivorous, and fungivorous ants. Contrary to others areas around the world, where true myrmecochory (seed dispersal by ants) is common among shrubs, ants also exploited diaspores from several cerrado trees. Plant life form, diaspore size, and ant body size did not seem to explain the pattern of interactions observed. Two subsets of preferential interactions, however, segregated fungivorous ants from another group composed of carnivorous and omnivorous ants, probably influenced by the chemical composition of the plant diaspores. Omnivorous ants usually remove the fleshy portion of diaspores on spot and probably provide limited benefits to plants. Carnivorous and fungivorous ants usually remove the whole diaspore to the nest. As each of these ant groups may influence the fitness of diaspores in different ways, there are possible subtle pathways for the evolution of partner choices between ants and these non‐myrmecochorous diaspores.  相似文献

Limb girdle muscular dystrophy 2C is caused by mutations in the γ-sarcoglycan gene (gsg) that results in loss of this protein, and disruption of the sarcoglycan (SG) complex. Signal transduction after mechanical perturbation is mediated, in part, through the SG complex and leads to phosphorylation of tyrosines on the intracellular portions of the sarcoglycans. This study tested if the Tyr6 in the intracellular region of γ-sarcoglycan protein (γ-SG) was necessary for proper localization of the protein in skeletal muscle membranes or for the normal pattern of ERK1/2 phosphorylation after eccentric contractions. Viral mediated gene transfer of wild type gsg (WTgsg) and mutant gsg lacking Tyr6 (Y6Agsg) was performed into the muscles of gsg−/− mice. Muscles were examined for production and stability of the γ-SG, as well as the level of ERK1/2 phosphorylation before and after eccentric contraction. Sarcolemmal localization of γ-SG was achieved regardless of which construct was expressed. However, only expression of WTgsg corrected the aberrant ERK1/2 phosphorylation associated with the absence of γ-SG, whereas Y6Agsg failed to have any effect. This study shows that localization of γ-SG does not require Tyr6, but localization alone is insufficient for restoration of normal signal transduction patterns after mechanical perturbation.  相似文献

The goal of restoration is to accelerate ecosystem recovery, but in ecosystems that naturally regenerate rapidly restoration techniques need to be selected carefully to facilitate rather than impede natural recovery. We compared the effects of five restoration techniques, such as plowing the soil, removing grasses, adding forest litter, seeding, and planting nursery‐growing seedlings, on the regeneration of seasonal deciduous forest trees in four abandoned pastures in central Brazil. We monitored all woody stems immediately prior to treatments and again 14 months after the treatments. We recorded an average of 16,663 tree stems per hectare and a total of 83 species before implementing treatments. Planting strongly increased species richness; adding litter and seeding had weaker positive effects on richness; and plowing and grass removal had no effect. Plowing substantially reduced the density of naturally established stems. Despite the high survival of planted seedlings, stem density in planting treatments did not change because the tractor and digging holes to plant seedlings caused mortality of naturally regenerating seedlings. Tree stems grew more in the grass release plots than in the control plots. Our results suggest that early succession of seasonal deciduous forest in pastures in the region studied does not need to be stimulated once the perturbation is stopped and that intensive restoration efforts may actually slow recovery. We recommend only enrichment planting of seedlings that are not able to resprout.  相似文献

Water beetles were examined for use as potential biodiversity indicators in continental aquatic ecosystems in a semiarid Mediterranean region, the Segura river basin (SE Spain). The indicator value of water beetles was investigated by examining the degree to which their species richness patterns was correlated with other groups (Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Mollusca, Heteroptera and Ephemeroptera), and the efficiency of water beetle area networks (selected by complementarity) in conserving overall groups richness. The species richness patterns of Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera were significantly correlated with the Remaining Richness value (RR), defined as the total number of species found at a site (of all six groups examined) minus the number of species belonging to the considered indicator group. Area networks for Coleoptera selected by complementarity represented the highest RR percentage (84.46%) and contained more than 78% species of each group. Furthermore, water beetles meet most of the criteria proposed in the literature for choosing biodiversity indicator taxa. In our study, the correlation values and the percentage of species represented by family, genus and species complementary networks were similar and we suggest that the higher taxa of water beetles (genera or families) can be used as biodiversity surrogates for cost-effective practical surveys.  相似文献

We estimated R*s and tested the applicability of R* theory on nonindigenous plant invasions in semi-arid rangeland. R* is the concentration of a resource that a species requires to survive in a habitat. R* theory predicts that a species with a lower R* for the most limiting resource will competitively displace a species with a higher R* under equilibrium conditions. In a greenhouse, annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum Pursh), and spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa Lam.) were grown in monoculture and 2- and 3-species mixtures for three growth periods in an attempt to reduce soil NO3-N concentrations below each species’ R*. At the end of each growth period, aboveground biomass by species and soil plant available nitrogen were sampled. Decreasing biomass coupled with decreasing soil plant available nitrogen was used to quantify R*s for the three species. R*s for annual sunflower, bluebunch wheatgrass, and spotted knapweed were estimated to be 0.6±0.16 ppm NO3, less than 0.05 ppm NO3, and 0.6±0.13 ppm NO3, respectively. Estimated R*s did not predict the outcome of competition among species. To successfully predict plant community dynamics on semi-arid rangeland with and without the presence of a nonindigenous invasive species, a more comprehensive model that includes mechanisms in addition to competition may have to be considered. We speculate that R* theory may prove most useful for predicting the outcome of competition within functional groups.  相似文献

Two Decades of River Restoration in California: What Can We Learn?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
As part of the National River Restoration Science Synthesis (NRRSS), we developed a summary database of 4,023 stream restoration projects built in California since 1980, from which we randomly selected 44 records for in‐depth interviews with project managers. Despite substantial difficulties in gathering the data, we were able to draw conclusions about current design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation practices used in California projects and compare them with national trends. Although more than half of the projects for which we conducted interviews were located in watersheds for which a management or assessment plan had been prepared, these plans had a limited impact on site selection. We also found that the state lacks a consistent framework for design, monitoring, and reporting restoration projects, and that although monitoring is far more widespread than the information in the NRRSS summary database would suggest, there are still problems with the type, duration, and reporting of monitoring. The general lack of systematic, objective assessment of completed projects hinders the advance of restoration science.  相似文献

Habitat modelling and predictive mapping are important tools for conservation planning, particularly for lesser known species such as many insectivorous bats. However, the scale at which modelling is undertaken can affect the predictive accuracy and restrict the use of the model at different scales. We assessed the validity of existing regional-scale habitat models at a local-scale and contrasted the habitat use of two morphologically similar species with differing conservation status (Mormopterus norfolkensis and Mormopterus species 2). We used negative binomial generalised linear models created from indices of activity and environmental variables collected from systematic acoustic surveys. We found that habitat type (based on vegetation community) best explained activity of both species, which were more active in floodplain areas, with most foraging activity recorded in the freshwater wetland habitat type. The threatened M. norfolkensis avoided urban areas, which contrasts with M. species 2 which occurred frequently in urban bushland. We found that the broad habitat types predicted from local-scale models were generally consistent with those from regional-scale models. However, threshold-dependent accuracy measures indicated a poor fit and we advise caution be applied when using the regional models at a fine scale, particularly when the consequences of false negatives or positives are severe. Additionally, our study illustrates that habitat type classifications can be important predictors and we suggest they are more practical for conservation than complex combinations of raw variables, as they are easily communicated to land managers.  相似文献

Despite our growing knowledge on plants’ functional responses to grazing, there is no consensus if an optimum level of functional aggregation exists for detecting grazing effects in drylands. With a comparative approach we searched for plant functional types (PFTs) with a consistent response to grazing across two areas differing in climatic aridity, situated in South Africa’s grassland and savanna biomes. We aggregated herbaceous species into PFTs, using hierarchical combinations of traits (from single- to three-trait PFTs). Traits relate to life history, growth form and leaf width. We first confirmed that soil and grazing gradients were largely independent from each other, and then searched in each biome for PFTs with a sensitive response to grazing, avoiding confounding with soil conditions. We found no response consistency, but biome-specific optimum aggregation levels. Three-trait PFTs (e.g. broad-leaved perennial grasses) and two-trait PFTs (e.g. perennial grasses) performed best as indicators of grazing effects in the semi-arid grassland and in the arid savanna biome, respectively. Some PFTs increased with grazing pressure in the grassland, but decreased in the savanna. We applied biome-specific grazing indicators to evaluate if differences in grazing management related to land tenure (communal versus freehold) had effects on vegetation. Tenure effects were small, which we mainly attributed to large variability in grazing pressure across farms. We conclude that the striking lack of generalizable PFT responses to grazing is due to a convergence of aridity and grazing effects, and unlikely to be overcome by more refined classification approaches. Hence, PFTs with an opposite response to grazing in the two biomes rather have a unimodal response along a gradient of additive forces of aridity and grazing. The study advocates for hierarchical trait combinations to identify localized indicator sets for grazing effects. Its methodological approach may also be useful for identifying ecological indicators in other ecosystems.  相似文献

Soil microorganisms are pivotal in ecological systems, it may not be possible to define an ecosystem where an impact on overall microorganism populations would not mean a severe impact on the ecosystem. They are as relevant to an ecosystem as any group of organisms could be. At the same time, it is very difficult to link impact on measurable microbial activities to ecological impacts. We lack the required understanding. The linkage fails because of: compensation processes—the ecological process is continued by organisms other than those measured; non-specific assays—the method used to measure activity may impose conditions that do not reflect ecological conditions and multiple and unknown interacting factors. Overall, the ambiguity in benefit/ detriment relationships for impacts on microbes is the largest problem. Here we describe several examples of successes and failures of soil microbial bioassays in applications related to soil cleanliness criteria and ecological risk assessment. The usefulness of the microbial bioassays remains in question.  相似文献
