The theory of Kukalova-Peck ('78) is examined and rejected except for the hypothesis of the partially pleural origin of wings. Data suggest that the arthropods ancestral to insects left the water, and that movable precursors of the wings, possibly exopodites, were immobilized and fused with the tergum to form part of the complex paranota. Later, during insect adaptation for flight, parts of the complex paranota were separated secondarily and became wings.  相似文献

The origin and evolution of insect wings has been the subject of extensive debate. The issue has remained controversial largely because of the absence of definitive fossil evidence or direct developmental evidence of homology between wings and a putative wing origin. Recent identification of wing serial homologs (WSHs) has provided researchers with a potential strategy for identifying WSHs in other species. Future comparative developmental analyses between wings and WSHs may clarify the important steps underlying the evolution of insect wings.  相似文献

Developing organisms are thought to be modular in organization so that traits in different modules evolve independently whereas traits within a module change in a concerted manner. The eyespot pattern in Bicyclus anynana butterflies provides an ideal system where morphological modularity can be dissected and different levels of genetic integration analyzed. Several lines of evidence show that all eyespots in an individual butterfly are genetically integrated, suggesting that the whole pattern, rather than the separate eyespots, should be considered as a single character. However, despite the strong genetic correlations between the two eyespots on the dorsal forewing of B. anynana, there is great potential for independent changes. Here we use laboratory lines selected in different directions for the size of those eyespots to study correlated responses in the whole eyespot pattern. We show clear changes in eyespot size across all wing surfaces, which depend on eyespot position along the anterior-posterior axis. There are also changes in the number of extra eyespots and in eyespot color composition but no changes in eyespot position relative to wing margin. Our analysis of eyespot pattern modularity is discussed in the light of what is known about the cellular and genetic mechanisms of eyespot formation and the great potential for evolutionary diversification in butterfly wing patterns.  相似文献

Because they lack some gnathostome-specific traits, cyclostomes have often been regarded as representing an intermediate state linking non-vertebrate chordates and gnathostomes. To understand the evolutionary origins of the jaw and paired fins, lamprey embryos and larvae have been used as comparative models. The lack of the jaw–neck region is a conspicuous feature specific to cyclostomes; however, the absence of these features has been largely neglected both in evolutionary developmental studies and in the field of classical comparative embryology. This review seeks to develop a possible evolutionary scenario of the vertebrate neck muscles by taking the cucullaris (trapezius) muscle as the focus. By combining the comparative embryology of lampreys and gnathostomes, and considering the molecular-level developmental mechanism of skeletal muscle differentiation, this review argues that the establishment of the vertebrate neck deserves to be called an evolutionary novelty based on the remodeling of mesenchymal components between the cranium and the shoulder girdle, which involves both mesodermal and neural crest cell lineages.  相似文献

The evolution of wings and the adaptive advantage they provide have allowed insects to become one of the most evolutionarily successful groups on earth. The incredible diversity of their shape, size, and color patterns is a direct reflection of the important role wings have played in the radiation of insects. In this review, we highlight recent studies on both butterflies and Drosophila that have begun to uncover the types of genetic variations and developmental mechanisms that control diversity in wing color patterns. In butterflies, these analyses are now possible because of the recent development of a suite of genomic and functional tools, such as detailed linkage maps and transgenesis. In one such study, extensive linkage mapping in Heliconius butterflies has shown that surprisingly few, and potentially homologous, loci are responsible for several major pattern variations on the wings of these butterflies. Parallel work on a clade of Drosophila has uncovered how cis-regulatory changes of the same gene correlate with the repeated gain and loss of pigmented wing spots. Collectively, our understanding of formation and evolution of color pattern in insect wings is rapidly advancing because of these recent breakthroughs in several different fields.  相似文献

Evolutionary integration (covariation) of traits has long fascinated biologists because of its potential to elucidate factors that have shaped morphological evolution. Studies of tetrapod crania have identified patterns of evolutionary integration that reflect functional or developmental interactions among traits, but no studies to date have sampled widely across the species-rich lissamphibian order Anura (frogs). Frogs exhibit a vast range of cranial morphologies, life history strategies, and ecologies. Here, using high-density morphometrics we capture cranial morphology for 172 anuran species, sampling every extant family. We quantify the pattern of evolutionary modularity in the frog skull and compare patterns in taxa with different life history modes. Evolutionary changes across the anuran cranium are highly modular, with a well-integrated “suspensorium” involved in feeding. This pattern is strikingly similar to that identified for caecilian and salamander crania, suggesting replication of patterns of evolutionary integration across Lissamphibia. Surprisingly, possession of a feeding larval stage has no notable influence on cranial integration across frogs. However, late-ossifying bones exhibit higher integration than early-ossifying bones. Finally, anuran cranial modules show diverse morphological disparities, supporting the hypothesis that modular variation allows mosaic evolution of the cranium, but we find no consistent relationship between degree of within-module integration and disparity.  相似文献

The body plan of the turtle represents an example of evolutionary novelty for acquisition of the shell. Unlike similar armors in other vertebrate groups, the turtle shell involves the developmental repatterning of the axial skeleton and exhibits an unusual topography of musculoskeletal elements. Thus, the turtle provides an ideal case study for understanding changes in the developmental program associated with the morphological evolution of vertebrates. In this article, the evolution of the turtle-specific body plan is reviewed and discussed. The key to understanding shell patterning lies in the modification of the ribs, for which the carapacial ridge (CR), a turtle-specific embryonic anlage, is assumed to be responsible. The growth of the ribs is arrested in the axial part of the body, allowing dorsal and lateral oriented growth to encapsulate the scapula. Although the CR does not appear to induce this axial arrest per se, it has been shown to support the fan-shaped patterning of the ribs, which occurs concomitant with marginal growth of the carapace along the line of the turtle-specific folding that takes place in the lateral body wall. During the process of the folding, some trunk muscles maintain their ancestral connectivities, whereas the limb muscles establish new attachments specific to the turtle. The turtle body plan can thus be explained with our knowledge of vertebrate anatomy and developmental biology, consistent with the evolutionary origin of the turtle suggested by the recently discovered fossil species, Odontochelys.  相似文献

Bacterial symbionts of insects are pervasive and influence several ecologically relevant traits of their hosts. Although there has been rapid progress in understanding the extent and phenotypic outcome of these associations, there is a paucity of empirical data on fine-scale evolutionary processes that operate between the genomes of host and symbiont. Recently published papers examining symbiont relationships of aphids, fruit flies and butterflies are starting to reveal that these associations might be more dynamic than was appreciated previously.  相似文献

Examination of historical persistence of integration patterns provides an important insight into understanding the origin and evolution of complex traits. Specifically, the distinct effects of developmental and functional integration on the evolution of complex traits are often overlooked. Because patterns of functional integration are commonly shaped by selection exerted by the external environment, whereas patterns of developmental integration can be determined by relatively environment-independent selection for developmental homeostasis, examination of historical persistence of morphological integration patterns among species should reveal the relative importance of current selection in the evolution of complex traits. We compared historical persistence of integration patterns produced by current developmental versus ecological requirements by examining the evolution of complex mandibular structures in nine species of soricid shrews. We found that, irrespective of phylogenetic relatedness of species, patterns of developmental and functional integration were highly concordant, suggesting that strong selection for developmental homeostasis favors concordant channeling of both internal and external variation. Overall, our results suggest that divergence in mandible shape among species closely follows variation in functional demands and ecological requirements regardless of phylogenetic relatedness among species.  相似文献

Genetic sex determination in an XX-XY chromosome system can be realized through a locus on the Y chromosome that makes the undifferentiated gonad develop into a testis. Although this mechanism is widespread, only in two cases so far have the corresponding master male sex-determining genes been identified. One is Sry, which initiates testes determination in most mammals. The other is dmrt1bY (syn. dmy), from the fish medaka, Oryzias latipes. The mammalian Y is roughly estimated to be over 200 million years old. The medaka Y may be considerably younger. A comparative analysis of the genus Oryzias revealed that one sister species of the medaka has dmrt1bY on a homologous Y chromosome, whereas in another closely related species only a non-sex-linked pseudogene is present. In all other species, dmrt1bY was not detected. The divergence time for the different species was determined with mitochondrial DNA sequences. The timing was confirmed by independent calculations based on dmrt1 sequences. We show that the medaka sex-determining gene originated approximately 10 million years ago. This makes dmrt1bY and the corresponding Y chromosome the youngest male sex-determining system, at least in vertebrates, known so far.  相似文献

The term "RNA editing" encompasses a wide variety of mechanistically and phylogenetically unrelated processes that change the nucleotide sequence of an RNA species relative to that of the encoding DNA. Two general classes of editing, substitution and insertion/deletion, have been described, with all major types of cellular RNA (messenger, ribosomal, and transfer) undergoing editing in different organisms. In cases where RNA editing is required for function (e.g., to generate a translatable open reading frame in a mRNA), editing is an obligatory step in the pathway of genetic information expression. How, when, and why individual RNA editing systems originated are intriguing biochemical and evolutionary questions. Here I review briefly what is known about the biochemistry, genetics, and phylogenetics of several very different RNA editing systems, emphasizing what we can deduce about their origin and evolution from the molecular machinery involved. An evolutionary model, centered on the concept of "constructive neutral evolution", is able to account in a general way for the origin of RNA editing systems. The model posits that the biochemical elements of an RNA editing system must be in place before there is an actual need for editing, and that RNA editing systems are inherently mutagenic because they allow potentially deleterious or lethal mutations to persist at the genome level, whereas they would otherwise be purged by purifying selection.  相似文献
