With a view to elucidate seasonal variations in testicular spermatogenesis, quantitative analysis of spermatogenic cells was carried out in non-human primate species viz. rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and bonnet (M. radiata) monkeys during breeding (October-December) and non-breeding (May-June) seasons. The results revealed significant inhibition of testicular germ cell population during non-breeding compared with the breeding period in both the species. Quantitative determination of Sertoli cell-germ cell ratio showed a marked decrease in the number of type A-spermatogonia, spermatocytes (non-pachytene and pachytene) and spermatids (in steps 1-12 of spermiogenesis) in rhesus monkey during the non-breeding period. Bonnet monkeys exhibited the significant decline in the number of primary spermatocytes and spermatids during the non-breeding phase. In addition, average diameter of round seminiferous tubules and nuclear diameter of Leydig cells also decreased significantly in rhesus monkeys. However, bonnet monkeys did not show any significant change in nuclear diameter/morphology of Leydig cells, testicular tubular diameter and number of type A-spermatogoniae. Sertoli cell number did not show any significant change during both breeding and non-breeding periods in both the species. The results of this study indicate a prominent seasonal variation in testicular spermatogenic/Leydig cells in rhesus monkeys than those observed in bonnet monkeys.  相似文献

This study reports observations on juvenile female bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) in a field cage environment. Interaction and proximity data collected on different age classes of juvenile females indicate distinct changes in social behavior from the time a female is weaned until her first pregnancy. Behavioral development includes an increase in solitary behavior, an early disinterest in younger animals, and a surprisingly low interaction rate with relatives. Important aspects of ontogeny are lost in analyses that treat all juvenile females as a single age-class. This research was supported partially by US PHS Grant No. RR00169.  相似文献

Feral and semi-feral squirrel monkeys form sexually segregated subgroups. Observation of social interaction among laboratory animals revealed significant differences in social behaviour as a function of group composition. Females were more active in Unisexual groups. They engaged in more affiliative behaviour and were less often the target of agonistic attack. Adult females with young avoided adult males. ‘Aunts’ and Nulliparous females initially avoided these same males, but later spent over 50% of their time in close proximity to them. Results are discussed in terms of squirrel monkey social ecology, and successful child-rearing.  相似文献

Time budgets for five major activities viz., Passive Sitting, Locomotion, Foraging, Social Behaviour, and Self-directed Behaviours were recorded for bonnet monkeys inhabiting forest, urban, and rural habitats. The time budgets were further classified into those of various age-sex classes. Significant inter-population differences were found in group size, social behaviour, foraging, and locomotion, which are discussed in relation to the habitat features.  相似文献

Our previous studies demonstrated the ability of low doses of antiprogestin ZK 98.299 (onapristone) to inhibit fertility in bonnet monkeys. In the present study cumulative effects of low doses of ZK 98.299 on the endometrial cytoarchitecture of bonnet monkeys were analyzed. Treatment with either the vehicle (n = 3) or onapristone at 2.5 mg (n = 4) or 5.0 mg (n = 3) was initiated on Day 5 of the first menstrual cycle and thereafter repeated every third day for four to seven consecutive cycles. The last treatment cycles were anovulatory in two animals treated with 2.5 mg and all animals treated with 5.0 mg. Endometrial biopsies were collected on Day 8 after the midcycle estradiol peak in ovulatory menstrual cycles and on Day 20 in anovulatory menstrual cycles during the last treatment cycle. Ultrathin sections of the fixed endometrium were stained with toluidine blue for morphometric analysis and uranyl acetate and lead citrate for ultrastructural analysis. The ZK 98.299-treated animals showed a dose-dependent endometrial atrophy as evident by a decrease in the height and diameter of the glands and early signs of compaction in the stroma. Ultrastructural analysis also revealed dose-dependent degenerative changes in the subcellular organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, and Golgi apparatus. This suggests that long-term treatment with low doses of ZK 98.299 leads to the suppression of estrogen-dependent endometrial proliferation. However, this blockade operates independent of estradiol receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) concentrations as the expressions of these steroid receptors did not show any significant changes even after prolonged treatment. The study demonstrated an antiestrogenic effect of ZK 98.299 on endometrium after prolonged treatment in bonnet monkeys.  相似文献

The individual spacing in a monkey troop varies with species. Patas monkeys disperse more than baboons. Individual friendships or hostility, pregnancy, health, and status may also affect the individual distance. The troop structure and troop size vary with the habitat. Forest-canopy monkeys may have a “master male” but no leader such as have those in the savanna. The latter also make use of more elaborate visual signals and may possess coloured genitalia and other easily recognized structures which are given a communicative function. The baboons were found to make use of more signals than the other monkeys studied. Assertive, aggressive, friendly, and appeasing signals are described. Visual appeasing signals are missing among guenons and patas monkeys. Both have a “master male” which spends much time at a distance from the troop. These peculiarities as well as the birth of a healthy vervet-patas hybrid in Ibadan causes the author to suggest that the generic differentiation between the patas and the guenons should be abandoned. There was nothing to suggest that grooming reflects the social ranking. Nor were there any signs that oestric cycling or having an infant-I affected the animal's social status. The social behavior of wild bonnet macaques impresses upon us a peculiality and uniqueness which is different from other macaques. Although there is a clear-cut ranking relationship among adult males and they carry out their proper social roles according to each situation, many social behaviors are carried out independently of or ignoring the ranking order. The animals are organized in a flexible and tolerant social unit, but they don't abandon the advantages of group life.The uniqueness of bonnet behavior and society is recognized to be related to the highly developed individuality of this species.  相似文献

Daily sperm production (DSP) rate was estimated in adult male rhesus and bonnet monkeys to evaluate seasonal changes in the gametogenic activity of the testes. Three monkeys of each species were castrated during breeding and non-breeding seasons and DSP rate was estimated by enumerating the homogenization-resistant spermatid nuclei of steps 13 and 14. Results indicated a significant reduction in the DSP rate per testis during the non-breeding season in two species, along with a marked decline in the testis weight. However, the gametogenic capacity of seminiferous tubules did not appear to be markedly affected during non-breeding season, as the DSP rate per gram parenchyma of testis was only marginally reduced. The seasonal changes in DSP were much more pronounced in the rhesus than in the bonnet monkey. The feasibility of circanual rhythm in DSP of sub-human primates to form a baseline for the study of reproductive function in male is discussed.  相似文献

Deaths due to dehydration and starvation occurred in the early neonatal period in bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata) infants housed with their dams in an outdoor half-acre corral. Dams were found to have small, rudimentary papillae mammae of insufficient size to permit suckling. Both papillary and breast tissue of affected dams were histologically normal; the nipples differed macroscopically from those of normal females only in size. This abnormality accounted for half of the neonatal mortality experienced in this breeding colony over a 5-year period.  相似文献

Social relationships, including dominance, grooming, and clasped-sleeping, were studied in a troop of bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) at Dharwar, India, the study period lasting two months and a half. Three measurements, the peanut test, the drinking test, and the spatial distribution test, were used to analyze dominance relationships. The peanut test showed a straight linear ranking order among adult males and females; however, among females drinking and spatial distribution orders are slightly different from that of feeding (peanut test). Grooming was observed more frequently between adult female and adult female and was seldom observed between adult male and juvenile female or between juvenile male and juvenile female. Apparently all monkeys tend to groom with females. On the other hand, monkeys of the same sex tend to sleep with each other. It is clear that monkeys select their partners when they groom and sleep.  相似文献

Lactating bonnet monkeys were used as a model to understand the mechanism of ovarian quiescence during lactation. The ovary of the bonnet monkey in the 3rd month of lactation responds well to exogenous pregnant mare serum gonadotropin stimulation with serum estrogen values reaching maximal levels by day 3 of the gonadotropin injection. The adminstration of ovine prolactin to such monkeys significantly inhibited the ovarian responsiveness to exogenous gonadotropin. The responsiveness of the pituitary of the lactating monkey (in the 3rd month of lactation) to luteinizing hormone releasing hormone injection was suppressed and supplementation with exogenous prolactin further accentuating this effect. The relative ability of chlorpromazine given intravenously/intramuscularly/intranasally to enhance endogenous prolactin levels was assessed. During the first 5 months of lactation when the basal prolactin levels were high, the luteinizing hormone levels were low. As the suckling stimulus reduces and prolactin levels fall, luteinizing hormone levels increase, the first post-parturient mensus occurring by 218 ± 4 days. This event was postponed by 3 months on increasing endogenous prolactin levels by administering chlorpromazine (250 μg/day by intranasal mode) over a 5 day period every month starting from the 3rd month of lactation.  相似文献

The social behaviour and vocalizations of two well-established groups of squirrel monkeys were recorded during 80 1/2-hr periods. Sonographs portray the physical characteristics of 24 vocalizations discriminable to the human ear. Twelve of these calls occurred sufficiently often to correlate them with each other and with social behaviours. The occurrence of any one of the 12 frequently emitted vocalizations was associated with the occurrence of several other vocalizations. Vocalizing was significantly and positively correlated with approach, withdrawal, touch, grasp or hold, and wrestle. These behaviours were significantly and positively correlated with one another. The notion that vocalizing is associated with motivational and emotional states was discussed. This study was done in partial fulfillment of the B. Sc. Honours degree.  相似文献

Effects of prolactin (PRL), bromocriptine (Br), testosterone propionate (TP), dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and the combination of these androgens with PRL/Br on the total lipid, total cholesterol, total glyceride glycerols, total phospholipid and their fractions in seminal vesicles of castrated mature monkeys were studied. Glyceride glycerols formed the major portion (50%) of total lipids in normal monkeys. Cholesterol and phospholipids were of equal share (25%). Esterified cholesterol formed major share (75%) of total cholesterol. Diacyl glycerol was the major (60%) glyceride glycerol and phosphatidyl choline and ethanolamine were the major phospholipid classes. Except triacyl glycerol castration markedly decreased all the lipid classes. PRL restored normal free and esterified cholesterol and phosphatidyl inositol but Br invariably decreased all the lipid classes. TP/DHT treatment stimulated the free and esterified cholesterol more than the control; it restored the normal glyceride glycerols. Phosphatidyl inositol, choline and ethanolamine were stimulated by androgens and other phospholipid classes were brought to normal. Addition of PRL + TP/DHT markedly increased esterified cholesterol, phosphatidyl inositol, choline, ethanolamine and phosphatidic acid. In all these aspects, Br counteracted the effects of androgens and PRL.  相似文献
