Cyanogenic glycosides are ancient biomolecules found in more than 2,650 higher plant species as well as in a few arthropod species. Cyanogenic glycosides are amino acid-derived β-glycosides of α-hydroxynitriles. In analogy to cyanogenic plants, cyanogenic arthropods may use cyanogenic glycosides as defence compounds. Many of these arthropod species have been shown to de novo synthesize cyanogenic glycosides by biochemical pathways that involve identical intermediates to those known from plants, while the ability to sequester cyanogenic glycosides appears to be restricted to Lepidopteran species. In plants, two atypical multifunctional cytochromes P450 and a soluble family 1 glycosyltransferase form a metabolon to facilitate channelling of the otherwise toxic and reactive intermediates to the end product in the pathway, the cyanogenic glycoside. The glucosinolate pathway present in Brassicales and the pathway for cyanoalk(en)yl glucoside synthesis such as rhodiocyanosides A and D in Lotus japonicus exemplify how cytochromes P450 in the course of evolution may be recruited for novel pathways. The use of metabolic engineering using cytochromes P450 involved in biosynthesis of cyanogenic glycosides allows for the generation of acyanogenic cassava plants or cyanogenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants as well as L. japonicus and A. thaliana plants with altered cyanogenic, cyanoalkenyl or glucosinolate profiles. 相似文献

In the attempt to use results from small-scale studies to make large-scale predictions, it is critical that we take into account
the greater spatial heterogeneity encountered at larger spatial scales. An important component of this heterogeneity is variation
in plant quality, which can have a profound influence on herbivore population dynamics. This influence is particularly relevant
when we consider that the strength of density dependence can vary among host plants and that the strength of density dependence
determines the difference between exponential and density- dependent growth. Here, we present some simple models and analyses
designed to examine the impact of variable plant quality on the dynamics of insect herbivore populations, and specifically
the consequences of variation in the strength of density dependence among host plants. We show that average values of herbivore
population growth parameters, calculated from plants that vary in quality, do not predict overall population growth. Furthermore,
we illustrate that the quality of a few individual plants within a larger plant population can dominate herbivore population
growth. Our results demonstrate that ignoring spatial heterogeneity that exists in herbivore population growth on plants that
differ in quality can lead to a misunderstanding of the mechanisms that underlie population dynamics. 相似文献

The up-regulation of secondary metabolic pathways following herbivore attack and the subsequent reduction in herbivore performance have been identified in numerous woody plant species. Eucalypts constitutively express many secondary metabolites in the leaves, including terpenes and formylated phloroglucinol compounds (FPCs). We used clonal ramets from six clones of Eucalyptus grandis and two clones of E. grandis x camaldulensis to determine if methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment could induce changes in the foliar concentrations of either of these groups of compounds. We also used bioassays to determine if any changes in the performance of larvae of Paropsis atomaria, a chrysomelid leaf beetle, could be detected in treated ramets versus the untreated controls, thus indicating whether MeJA induced the up-regulation of defences other than terpenes or FPCs. We found no significant effects of MeJA treatment on either the foliar concentrations of terpenes and FPCs or on herbivore performance. We did, however, detect dramatic differences in larval performance between Eucalyptus clones, thereby demonstrating large variations in the levels of constitutive defence. Larval feeding on clones resistant to P. atomaria resulted in high first instar mortality and disruption of normal gregarious feeding behaviour in surviving larvae. Histological examination of larvae feeding on a resistant clone revealed damage to the midgut consistent with the action of a toxin. These findings concur with mounting evidence that most evergreen perennial plants lack foliar-induced defences and suggest that constitutively expressed secondary metabolites other than those commonly examined in studies of interactions between insect herbivores and Eucalyptus may be important in plant defence. 相似文献

Large-scale sequencing of conifer cDNAs and targeted molecular cloning have identified many putative conifer defense genes.
Expression of many of these genes is induced in response to biotic stress and some may be expressed only in a few specialized
tissues or cells. Proven functional genomics approaches to test these genes involve expression of proteins in Escherichia coli or yeast for biochemical characterization or constitutive over-expression in transformed plants. Plant transformation to test
functions of insect-, wound- or pathogen-induced conifer defense genes would benefit from the use of an inducible expression
system. We describe here the development of a heterologous, wound- and insect-inducible gene expression system for conifers
using the potato proteinase inhibitor II (pinII)-promoter. Using pinII::GUS and pinII::(E)-α-bisabolene synthase expression constructs we demonstrate localized induced gene expression in white spruce seedlings (Picea glauca). Testing of these constructs in Arabidopsis thaliana and tobacco illustrates the additional potential of the pinII-promoter to be used in tests of gene function that involve cell-specific and systemic induction. 相似文献

Insect herbivory has variable effects on plant physiology; so greater understanding is needed about how injury alters photosynthesis
on individual injured and uninjured leaves. Gas exchange and light-adapted leaf chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were
collected from uninjured and mechanical partial leaf defoliation in two experiments with Nerium oleander (Apocynaceae) leaves, and one experiment with Danaus plexippus herbivory on Asclepias curassavica (Asclepiadaceae) leaves. Gas exchange impairment (lower photosynthetic rate (P
n
), stomatal conductance (g
s)) indicates water stress in a leaf, suggests stomatal limitations causing injury P
n
impairment. The same pattern of gas exchange impairment also occurred on uninjured leaves opposite from injured leaves in
both N. oleander experiments. This is an interesting result because photosynthetic impairment is rarely reported on injured leaves near injured
leaves. No photosynthetic changes occurred in uninjured A. curassavica leaves opposite from D. plexippus-fed leaves. Partially defoliated leaves that had P
n
and g
s reductions lacked any significant changes in intercellular leaf [CO2], C
i. These results neither support, nor are sufficient to reject, stomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Manually imposed midrib
vein severance in N. oleander experiment #1 significantly increased leaf C
i, indicating mesophyll limitations to photosynthesis. Maximal light-adapted leaf photochemical efficiency () and also non-photochemical quenching (q
N) were reduced by mechanical or insect herbivory to both study species, suggesting leaf trouble handling excess light energy
not used for photochemistry. Midrib injury on N. oleander leaves and D. plexippus herbivory on A. curassavica leaves also reduced effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (q
P); so reduced plastoquinone pools could lead to additional PSII reaction center closure. 相似文献

It is well documented that plant and animal phenology is changing in response to recent climate warming in the Palaearctic. However, few long-term data sets are currently available in the Mediterranean basin. The present study reports long-term temporal trends of several phenophases of 45 plants, 4 insects and 6 migratory insectivorous birds. Dynamic factor analyses performed with plant phenophases showed that most of those events occurring at spring and summer had common trends toward the advancement, especially since mid-1970s. However, during these last decades, insect phenology showed a steeper advance than plant phenology, suggesting an increase of decoupling of some plant–insect interactions, such as those between pollinators and flowers or herbivorous insects and their plant resources. All trans-Saharan bird species showed highly significant temporal trends in all studied phenophases (some of them covering most of the last century). In two species, the duration of stay is increasing due to both earlier arrivals and later departures. On the other hand, two wintering species showed a significant advancement in their arrival dates, while an opposite pattern were found for departures of each one. Only one of these species increased significantly its wintering stay. Bird departures were not related to local climate in any species. Our results demonstrate a key role of local temperatures behind interannual variability of most plant and insects phenophases, with especial emphasis in those occurring in spring and summer. Therefore, the common signal towards the advancement recorded since mid-1970s resulted from the recent rise in temperatures. 相似文献

Interspecific competition (or facilitation) between herbivores sharing a host plant species can result in negative (or positive)
correlations in damage levels, independent of a plant’s genetic covariance in resistance to the herbivores. Just like genetic
correlations in resistance to herbivory, these “environmental correlations” in damage may affect the evolution of resistance
in the host plant. In a field study of 960 ramets and 40 genets of the herbaceous plant Solanum carolinense, I looked for evidence of such environmental correlations in damage caused by 11 species of herbivores, including 10 insects
and 1 mammal. There were 28 significant correlations in damage levels between species (21 negative and 7 positive) after plant
genetic influences on resistance were statistically removed. Negative environmental correlations were more likely between
species that fed upon the same type of plant organs than between those that fed on different types of organs, and the magnitudes
of the correlations were inversely proportional to the abundance of the organ types. Taken together, these results offer strong
evidence that competition is largely responsible for the pattern of environmental correlations in damage. Environmental correlations
were just as common as genetic correlations in resistance, but the environmental correlations tended to be lower in magnitude,
were more likely to be negative, and were more evenly spread out among the herbivore community than the genetic correlations.
Damage levels by all 11 species were negatively correlated with damage by at least one other species. Thus the selective advantage
a plant would receive from increased resistance any of these herbivores would be partially negated by increased damage by
competing herbivores. As a result, competition has the potential to be an important constraint on the evolution of resistance
in S. carolinense. 相似文献

We examined whether heavy browsing by sika deer, Cervus nippon Temminck, changed morphological characteristics of a Japanese nettle, Urtica thunbergiana Sieb. et Zucc., in Nara Park, where a large population of sika deer has been maintained for more than 1,200 years. Wild nettles
of Nara Park exhibited smaller leaf area, 11–223 times more stinging hairs per leaf, and 58–630-times higher stinging hair
densities than those of other areas where there was no evidence of sika deer browsing. There were no significant differences
in stinging hair length between the areas. Nettles from Nara Park that were cultivated from seeds in a greenhouse retained
a larger number and higher density of stinging hairs. In the field, nettles of Nara Park were less frequently browsed by sika
deer and showed higher survivorship than nettles that were transplanted from an unbrowsed area into Nara Park. These results
indicate that: (1) the U. thunbergiana population of Nara Park has an extremely high stinging hair density compared with those of unbrowsed areas; (2) this characteristic
has a genetic basis, and (3) stinging hairs serve as a defensive structure against sika deer, contributing to an increase
in survivorship. Thus, we conclude that a U. thunbergiana population in Nara Park, with extremely high stinging hair densities, has evolved through natural selection due to heavy
browsing by sika deer. 相似文献

According to optimal defence theory (ODT) plants should invest in stronger defence in the most valuable parts, such as reproductive
or young tissue. Cotton plants are known to express high resistance to herbivore feeding in the developing leaves at the top
of the plant after herbivore-damage. Cotton plants also have developing leaves on side shoots from the nodes all along the
plant. This allowed us to investigate within-plant distribution of defence between younger tissues at different locations
on the plant. We found that all developing leaves showed increased resistance to feeding by larvae of the generalist moth
Spodoptera littoralis after herbivore damage to leaves of the plant. An increase in the concentration of secondary compounds, terpenoid aldehydes,
was found in developing leaves both at the top of the plant and on the side shoots. However, the resistance was stronger in
the top leaves than in the side shoot leaves, showing that there is intra-plant variation in the induced response between
different leaves of the same age. After the initial damage, larval feeding mainly occurred on the older, fully developed true
leaves. Furthermore, the herbivore-induced resistance in the developing leaves reduced upward movement of feeding larvae on
the plant and reduced the feeding on the upper parts of the plant over a period of at least 6 days. The plant thus benefits
from defending all developing leaves by directing feeding to older, less valuable leaves and lower parts of the plant. The
observed distribution of defence within cotton plants supports ODT. 相似文献

A single-species population dynamics with dispersal in a spatially heterogeneous environment is modeled by a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation with a potential term. To each nonlinear kinetics there corresponds a bifurcation curve that describes the relation between the growth rate and the central density of a steady-state population distribution. Our main concern is an inverse problem for this correspondence. The existence of nonlinear kinetics realizing a prescribed bifurcation curve is established. It is shown that the freedom of such kinetics is of degree finite and even, depending only on the heterogeneity of the environment, and conversely that any nonnegative even integer occurs as the degree of freedom in some environments. A discussion is also made on under what kind of environment the degree is equal to zero or is positive. The mathematical analysis involves the development of a general theory for singular multiplicative Wiener-Hopf integral equations. 相似文献

Animals that consume plant parts or rewards but provide no services in return are likely to have significant impacts on the
reproductive success of their host plants. The effects of multiple antagonists to plant reproduction may not be predictable
from studying their individual effects in isolation. If consumer behaviors are contingent on each other, such interactions
may limit the ability of the host to evolve in response to any one enemy. Here, we asked whether nectar robbing by a bumblebee
(Bombus occidentalis) altered the likelihood of pre-dispersal seed predation by a fly (Hylemya sp.) on a shared host plant, Ipomopsis aggregata (Polemoniaceae). We estimated the fitness consequences of the combined interactions using experimental manipulations of nectar
robbing within and among sites. Within sites, nectar robbing reduced the percentage of fruits destroyed by Hylemya. However, the negative effects of robbing on seed production outweighed any advantages associated with decreased seed predation
in robbed plants. We found similar trends among sites when we manipulated robbing to all plants within a local population,
although the results were not statistically significant. Taken together, our results suggest that seed predation is not independent
of nectar robbing. Thus, accounting for the interactions among species is crucial to predicting their ecological effects and
plant evolutionary response. 相似文献

Tree species can affect the soil they are growing on and this might influence their fitness. The New Zealand gymnosperm tree
species kauri (Agathis australis (D. Don) Lindl.) which grows in mixed angiosperm–gymnosperm forests has a substantial effect upon the soil. We studied the
hypotheses that: (1) low soil moisture availability below mature kauri trees hampers growth of kauri seedlings and angiosperm
seedlings, (2) low nutrient availability below kauri trees hampers only angiosperm seedlings, and (3) angiosperm seedlings
are hampered more than kauri seedlings by the conditions below kauri trees. We tested these hypotheses by planting seedlings
of kauri and mapau (Myrsine australis (A. Rich) Allan) under kauri trees and applying the following treatments: removal of herbs, removal of litter, removal of
nutrient limitation, and elimination of root competition of mature kauri trees. The results indicate that low soil moisture
availability, or the combination of low soil moisture availability and low nutrient fertility, hampers the growth of kauri
as well as mapau seedlings below kauri trees. The mapau seedlings are hampered relatively more than the kauri seedlings which
might result in an increased relative fitness of the latter. 相似文献

Role of glucosinolates in plant invasiveness 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Caroline Müller 《Phytochemistry Reviews》2009,8(1):227-242
Many plants have been intentionally or accidentally introduced to new habitats where some of them now cause major ecological
and economic threats to natural and agricultural ecosystems. The potential to become invasive might depend on plant characteristics,
as well as on specific interactions with other organisms acting as symbionts or antagonists, including other plants, microbes,
herbivores, or pollinators. The invasion potential furthermore depends on abiotic conditions in the habitat. Several species
of the Brassicaceae, well known for their glucosinolate–myrosinase defence system, are invasive species. Various factors are
reviewed here that might explain why these species were so successful in colonising new areas. Specific emphasis is laid on
the role of glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products in the invasion potential. This particular defence system is involved
specifically in plant–plant, plant–microbe and plant–insect interactions. Most research has been done on the mechanisms underlying
invasion success of Alliaria petiolata and Brassica spp., followed by Bunias orientalis and Lepidium draba. Some examples are also given for plants that are not necessarily considered as invasives, but which were well investigated
with respect to their interference potential with their biotic environment. For each species, most likely a combination of
different plant characteristics enhanced the competitive abilities and led to diverse invasive phenotypes. 相似文献

The reserve ovary model is a key hypothesis proposed to explain why plants produce surplus flowers and posits that plants may utilize surplus flowers
to compensate for losses from floral herbivory. We tested this hypothesis in the prairie plant Eryngium yuccifolium and its floral herbivore Coleotechnites eryngiella. At five Illinois tallgrass prairie sites, we collected central, primary lateral, and secondary lateral inflorescences from
E. yuccifolium to determine whether damage by the larvae of C. eryngiella to the flowers in earlier developing inflorescences would be compensated for in later developing inflorescences. Coleotechnites eryngiella does extensive damage to the central and primary inflorescences and little damage to the secondary inflorescences. Later
maturing inflorescences did not compensate for early damage by increasing seed production in later inflorescences. The secondary
inflorescences of E. yuccifolium may only compensate for catastrophic damage done to the central and primary inflorescences early on in development, serve
as additional advertisements for pollinators, act as pollen donors, or allow the plant to take advantage of “ecological windows”
of high pollinator and low herbivore abundance. Our findings were spatially and temporally consistent and did not support
the predictions of the reserve ovary model in the E. yuccifolium–C. eryngiella system suggesting that in this system, alternate, proximate, and ultimate causes need to be explored for the production of
surplus flowers. 相似文献

Plant–insect interactions can alter ecosystem processes, especially if the insects modify plant architecture, quality, or
the quantity of leaf litter inputs. In this study, we investigated the interactions between the rosette gall midge Rhopalomyia solidaginis and tall goldenrod, Solidago altissima, to quantify the degree to which the midge alters plant architecture and how the galls affect rates of litter decomposition
and nutrient release in an old-field ecosystem. R. solidaginis commonly leads to the formation of a distinct apical rosette gall on S. altissima and approximately 15% of the ramets in a S. altissima patch were galled (range: 3–34%). Aboveground biomass of galled ramets was 60% higher and the leaf area density was four
times greater on galled leaf tissue relative to the portions of the plant that were not affected by the gall. Overall decomposition
rate constants did not differ between galled and ungalled leaf litter. However, leaf-litter mass loss was lower in galled
litter relative to ungalled litter, which was likely driven by modest differences in initial litter chemistry; this effect
diminished after 12 weeks of decomposition in the field. The proportion of N remaining was always higher in galled litter
than in ungalled litter at each collection date indicating differential release of nitrogen in galled leaf litter. Several
studies have shown that plant–insect interactions on woody species can alter ecosystem processes by affecting the quality
or quantity of litter inputs. Our results illustrate how plant–insect interactions in an herbaceous species can affect ecosystem
processes by altering the quality and quantity of litter inputs. Given that S. altissima dominates fields and that R. solidaginis galls are highly abundant throughout eastern North America, these interactions are likely to be important for both the structure
and function of old-field ecosystems. 相似文献

Although genetic variability and resource availability both influence plant chemical composition, little is known about how these factors interact to modulate costs of resistance, expressed as negative correlations between growth and defense. We evaluated genotype × environment effects on foliar chemistry and growth of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) by growing multiple aspen genotypes under variable conditions of light and soil nutrient availability in a common garden. Foliage was analyzed for levels of nitrogen, phenolic glycosides and condensed tannins. Bioassays of leaf quality were conducted with fourth-stadium gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larvae. Results revealed strong effects of plant genotype, light availability and nutrient availability; the importance of each factor depended upon compound type. For example, tannin concentrations differed little among genotypes and across nutrient regimes under low light conditions, but markedly so under high light conditions. Phenolic glycoside concentrations, in contrast, were largely determined by genotype. Variation in phenolic glycoside concentrations among genotypes was the most important factor affecting gypsy moth performance. Gypsy moth biomass and development time were negatively and positively correlated, respectively, with phenolic glycoside levels. Allocation to phenolic glycosides appeared to be costly in terms of growth, but only under resource-limiting conditions. Context-dependent trade-offs help to explain why costs of allocation to resistance are often difficult to demonstrate. 相似文献

Genetic time‐series data from historical samples greatly facilitate inference of past population dynamics and species evolution. Yet, although climate and landscape change are often touted as post‐hoc explanations of biological change, our understanding of past climate and landscape change influences on evolutionary processes is severely hindered by the limited application of methods that directly relate environmental change to species dynamics through time. Increased integration of spatiotemporal environmental and genetic data will revolutionize the interpretation of environmental influences on past population processes and the quantification of recent anthropogenic impacts on species, and vastly improve prediction of species responses under future climate change scenarios, yielding widespread revelations across evolutionary biology, landscape ecology and conservation genetics. This review encourages greater use of spatiotemporal landscape genetic analyses that explicitly link landscape, climate and genetic data through time by providing an overview of analytical approaches for integrating historical genetic and environmental data in five key research areas: population genetic structure, demography, phylogeography, metapopulation connectivity and adaptation. We also include a tabular summary of key methodological information, suggest approaches for mitigating the particular difficulties in applying these techniques to ancient DNA and palaeoclimate data, and highlight areas for future methodological development. 相似文献

The rhizosphere is a niche exploited by a wide variety of bacteria. The expression of heterologous genes by plants might become
a factor affecting the structure of bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. In a greenhouse experiment, the bacterial community
associated to transgenic eucalyptus, carrying the Lhcb1-2 genes from pea (responsible for a higher photosynthetic capacity), was evaluated. The culturable bacterial community associated
to transgenic and wild type plants were not different in density, and the Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis (ARDRA)
typing of 124 strains revealed dominant ribotypes representing the bacterial orders Burkholderiales, Rhizobiales, and Actinomycetales, the families Xanthomonadaceae, and Bacillaceae, and the genus Mycobacterium. Principal Component Analysis based on the fingerprints obtained by culture-independent Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis
analysis revealed that Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria communities responded differently to plant genotypes. Similar effects for the cultivation of transgenic eucalyptus to those
observed when two genotype-distinct wild type plants are compared. 相似文献
