This study was conducted to determine reciprocal effects of low to high doses of nitrogenous fertilizer (N30, N40, N50, N60 and N70 — 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 kg ha−1 respectively) and CO2 enriched environment on C and N partitioning in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril cv JS-335). Plants were grown from seedling emergence to maturity inside open top chambers under ambient, AC (350±50 mol mol−1) and elevated, EC (600±50 mol mol−1) CO2 and analyzed at seedling, vegetative, flowering, pod setting and maturity stages. Soybean responded to both CO2 enrichment and N supply. Leaves, stem and root reserves at different growth stages were analyzed for total C and N contents. Consistent increase in the C contents of the leaf, stem and root was observed under EC than in AC. N contents in the different plant parts were found to be decreased under EC-grown plants specially at seedling and vegetative stage despite providing N doses to the soil. Significant increase observed for C to N dry mass ratio under EC in the root, stems and leaves at seedling and vegetative stage was decreased in the middle and later growth stages possibly due to combined impact of N doses to the soil and increased N2 fixing activities due to EC conditions. Critical analysis of our findings reveals that the composition and partitioning of C and N of soybean under variable rates of N supply and CO2 enrichment alter according to need under altered metabolic process. These changes eventually may lead to alteration in uptake of not only N but other essential nutrients also under changing atmosphere.  相似文献

A series of studies using major crops (cotton [Gossypium hirsutum L.], wheat [Triticum aestivum L.], grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]) were reviewed to examine the impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 on crop residue decomposition within agro-ecosystems. Experiments evaluated utilized plant and soil material collected from CO2 study sites using Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) and open top chambers (OTC). A incubation study of FACE residue revealed that CO2-induced changes in cotton residue composition could alter decomposition processes, with a decrease in N mineralization observed with FACE, which was dependent on plant organ and soil series. Incubation studies utilizing plant material grown in OTC considered CO2-induced changes in relation to quantity and quality of crop residue for two species, soybean and grain sorghum. As with cotton, N mineralization was reduced with elevated CO2 in both species, however, difference in both quantity and quality of residue impacted patterns of C mineralization. Over the short-term (14 d), little difference was observed for CO2 treatments in soybean, but C mineralization was reduced with elevated CO2 in grain sorghum. For longer incubation periods (60 d), a significant reduction in CO2-C mineralized per g of residue added was observed with the elevated atmospheric CO2 treatment in both crop species. Results from incubation studies agreed with those from the OTC field observations for both measurements of short-term CO2 efflux following spring tillage and the cumulative effect of elevated CO2 (> 2 years) in this study. Observations from field and laboratory studies indicate that with elevated atmospheric CO2, the rate of plant residue decomposition may be limited by N and the release of N from decomposing plant material may be slowed. This indicates that understanding N cycling as affected by elevated CO2 is fundamental to understanding the potential for soil C storage on a global scale. Some studies of responses of plants to elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide (EC) added CO2 only in the daytime, while others supplied CO2 continuously. I tested whether these two methods of EC treatments produced differences in the seed yield of soybeans. Tests were conducted for four growing seasons, using open top chambers, with soybeans rooted in the ground in field plots. One third of the chambers were flushed with air at the current ambient [CO2] (AC), one third had [CO2] 350 μmol mol−1 above ambient during the daytime (ECd), while one third had [CO2] 350 μmol mol−1 above ambient for 24 h per day (ECdn). ECdn increased seed yield by an average of 62 % over the four years compared with the AC treatment, while ECd increased seed yield by 34 %. Higher seed yield for ECdn compared with ECd occurred each year. In comparing years, the relative yield disadvantage of ECd decreased with increasing overall seed yield. On days with high water vapor pressure deficits, soybean canopies with ECd had smaller midday extinction coefficients for photosynthetically active radiation than canopies with ECdn, because of a more vertical leaf orientation. Hence the seed yield of soybean at EC varied depending on whether EC was also provided at night, with much greater yield stimulation for ECdn than for ECd in some years.  相似文献

Nitrogen response trials throughout the United States Corn Belt show that economic optimum rates of N fertilization are usually less for maize (Zea mays L.) following soybean (Glycine max L.) than for maize following maize; however, the cause of this rotation effect is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the source of the apparent N contribution from soybean to maize (soybean N credit) by comparing soil N mineralization rates in field plots of unfertilized maize that had either nodulated soybean, non-nodulated soybean, or maize as the previous crop. Crop yields, plant N accumulation, soil inorganic N, and net soil mineralization were measured. Both grain yield (6.3 vs. 2.8 Mg ha–1) and above-ground N accumulation (97 vs. 71 kg ha–1) were greatly increased when maize followed nodulated soybean compared with maize following maize. A partial benefit to yield and N accumulation was also observed for maize following non-nodulated soybean. Cumulative net soil N mineralization following nodulated soybean, non-nodulated soybean, and maize was 112, 92 and 79 kg N ha–1, respectively. Net mineralization of soil N appeared to be influenced by both quality (C:N ratio) and quantity of residue from the previous crop. In addition to an increase in plant available N from mineralization, the amount of soil inorganic N (especially in soil 5 cm from the row) was greater following nodulated soybean than non-nodulated soybean or maize. Based on these data, the soybean N credit appears to result from a combination of a decrease in net soil mineralization in continuous maize production and an increase in residual soil N from symbiotic fixation.  相似文献

Midday measurements of single leaf gas exchange rates of upper canopy leaves of soybeans grown in the field at 350 (AC) and 700 (EC) µmol(CO2) mol–1 in open topped chambers sometimes indicated up to 50 % higher net photosynthetic rates (P N) measured at EC in plants grown at AC compared to EC. On other days mean P N were nearly identical in the two growth [CO2] treatments. There was no seasonal pattern to the variable photosynthetic responses of soybean to growth [CO2]. Even on days with significantly lower P N in the plants grown at EC, there was no reduction in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, chlorophyll, or soluble protein contents per unit of leaf area. Over three years, gas exchange evidence of acclimation occurred on days when either soil was dry or the water vapor pressure deficit was high (n = 12 d) and did not occur on days after rain or on days with low water vapor pressure deficit (n = 9 d). On days when photosynthetic acclimation was evident, midday leaf water potentials were consistently 0.2 to 0.3 MPa lower for the plants grown at EC than at AC. This suggested that greater susceptibility to water stress in plants grown at EC cause the apparent photosynthetic acclimation. In other experiments, plants were grown in well-watered pots in field chambers and removed to the laboratory early in the morning for gas exchange measurements. In these experiments, the amount of photosynthetic acclimation evident in the gas exchange measurements increased with the maximum water vapor pressure deficit on the day prior to the measurements, indicating a lag in the recovery of photosynthesis from water stress. The apparent increase in susceptibility to water stress in soybean plants grown at EC is opposite to that observed in some other species, where photosynthetic acclimation was evident under wet but not dry conditions, and may be related to the observation that hydraulic conductance is reduced in soybeans when grown at EC. The day-to-day variation in photosynthetic acclimation observed here may account for some of the conflicting results in the literature concerning the existence of acclimation to EC in field-grown plants.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen [75 and 150 kg (N) ha−1] and elevated CO2 on growth, photosynthetic rate, contents of soluble leaf proteins and activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and nitrate reductase (NR) were studied on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. HD-2285) grown in open top chambers under either ambient (AC) or elevated (EC) CO2 concentration (350 ± 50, 600 ± 50 μmol mol−1) and analyzed at 40, 60 and 90 d after sowing. Plants grown under EC showed greater photosynthetic rate and were taller and attained greater leaf area along with higher total plant dry mass at all growth stages than those grown under AC. Total soluble and Rubisco protein contents decreased under EC but the activation of Rubisco was higher at EC with higher N supply. Nitrogen increased the NR activity whereas EC reduced it. Thus, EC causes increased growth and PN ability per unit uptake of N in wheat plants, even if N is limiting.  相似文献

Genistein is the major root produced isoflavonoid inducer of nod genes in the symbiosis between B. japonicum and soybean plants. Reduction in the isoflavonoid content of the host plants has recently been suggested as a possible explanation for the inhibition of mineral nitrogen (N) on the establishment of the symbiosis. In order to determine whether genistein addition could overcome this inhibition, we incubated B. japonicum cells (strain 532C) with genistein. Mineral N (in the form of NH4NO3) was applied at 0, 20 and 100 kg ha-1. The experiments were conducted on both a sandy-loam soil and a clay-loam soil. Preincubation of B. japonicum cells with genistein increased soybean nodule number and nodule weight, especially in the low-N-containing sandy-loam soil and the low N fertilizer treatment. Plant growth and yield were less affected by genistein preincubation treatments than nitrogen assimilation. Total plant nitrogen content was increased by the two genistein preincubation treatments at the early flowering stage. At maturity, shoot and total plant nitrogen contents were increased by the 40 μM genistein preincubation treatment at the sandy-loam soil site. Total nitrogen contents were increased by the 20 μM genistein preincubation treatment only at the 0 and 20 kg ha-1 nitrate levels in clay-loam soil. Forty μM genistein preincubation treatment increased soybean yield on the sandy-loam soil. There was no difference among treatments for 100-seed weight. The results suggest that preincubation of B. japonicum cells with genistein could improve soybean nodulation and nitrogen fixation, and at least partially overcome the inhibition of mineral nitrogen on soybean nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Waterlogging of soybean plants (Glycine max L.) led to impaired symbiotic N2 fixation and a marked decline in glutamine (Gln) concentration in xylem bleeding sap. Xylem Gln concentration increased during the growth cycle of the plant and was correlated with nodule formation. Treatments known to impair N2 fixation, such as exposing the root system to pure N2 gas or a mixture of Ar and O2 (80:20; v/v), led to specific declines in xylem sap Gln. The decrease in Gln observed during waterlogging was also seen on transfer of nodulated plants to aerated hydroponics, where the decline was highly correlated with ureide content in the xylem sap. Upon flooding the nodulated root system, the specific decline in xylem sap Gln could be detected within 10 min and reached a minimum within 60 min, indicating that waterlogging has an immediate effect on N2 fixation. It is concluded that xylem Gln arises directly from N2-fixation and is a useful indicator of N2 fixation activity of symbiotic soybean plants.  相似文献

Twelve-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) were exposed to ambient (AC) or elevated (EC) [ambient + 350 mol(CO2) mol–1] CO2 concentration [CO2] using the facilities of open-top-chambers (OTCs) and glass domes (GDs). A combination of gas exchange measurements and application of a biochemical model of photosynthesis were used for the evaluation of CO2 assimilation characteristics. Morphological change was assessed on the base of specific leaf area (SLA). Nitrogen (N) content in the assimilation apparatus was considered a main factor influencing the biochemical capacity. Three experiments confirm the hypothesis that an adjustment of photosynthetic capacity under EC is controlled by the combination of biochemical, morphological, and physiological feedback mechanisms. We observed periodicity of down-regulation of photosynthetic capacity (Experiment No. 1) during the vegetation seasons. In the spring months (May–June), i.e. during the occurrence of active carbon sink associated with the formation of new foliage, up-regulation (10–35 %) of photosynthetic capacity (P Nsat) was observed. On the contrary, in the autumn months (September–October) down-regulation (25–35 %) of P Nsat was recorded that was mainly associated with reduced carbon sink strength and biochemical change, i.e. decrease of N status (up to 32 %) and accumulation of saccharides (up to 72 %) in leaves. Different adjustments of photosynthetic activities were observed in current (C) and one-year-old (C-1) needles exposed to EC (Experiment No. 2). Strong down-regulation of P Nsat and the diminution of the initial stimulation of photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) was associated with decreases of both ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase carboxylation activity (by 32 %) and RuBP regeneration (by 40 %). This performance was tightly correlated with the absence of active carbon sinks, decrease of N content, and starch accumulation in C-1 needles. Finally, different responses of sun- and shade-adapted needles to EC (Experiment No. 3) were associated with the balance between morphological and biochemical changes. Observed P Nsat down-regulation (by 22 %) of exposed needles in EC was predominantly caused by effects of both higher assimilate accumulation and stronger N dilution, resulting from higher absolute photosynthetic rates and incident irradiances in the upper canopy.  相似文献

Dark respiration rate in the night (R D) was measured in five-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees grown for two years under ambient (AC) and elevated (AC + 400 µmol mol–1 = EC) CO2 concentrations in open top chambers. Two needle age classes (i.e., current-year and one-year-old) were measured at AC and EC in both AC- and EC-grown pines. Additionally different chemical characteristics were determined on the needles, such as nitrogen (N), carbon (C), starch, and soluble sugar concentrations as well as specific leaf area. The direct, short-term and indirect, long-term effects of EC on R D for the two needle age classes were examined. R D was expressed on a per needle area, needle mass, N, C, and C/N bases. Direct effects were only pronounced in the AC treatment where inhibition of R D was found at EC in both current- and one-year-old needles. Indirect effects were only significant in one-year-old needles where a decrease was found in the EC grown trees as compared with AC ones when R D was expressed per unit needle mass, C, or C/N. R D per unit needle area and needle N were not sensitive to long-term EC, in any needle age class. Long-term EC treatment also influenced the response of the two needle age classes. One-year-old needles from the EC treatment had significantly lower R D than current-year needles, but no such response was observed in the AC treatment. Our experiment re-emphasised the importance of expressing R D on different bases for a correct interpretation of the responses to EC. Moreover, we showed that different needle age classes can respond differently to a CO2 enrichment.  相似文献

Elevated CO2 increases seed production more in plant species that form a symbiotic association with N2–fixing bacteria than in species without such association. We studied the mechanism of the increase of seed production with elevated CO2 using nodulated soybean (Glycine max cv. Enrei) and its non-nodulated isogenic line (cv. En1282). Increase in seed production with elevated CO2 was observed in nodulated Enrei but was not in non-nodulated En1282. The increase in seed production in Enrei was explained by the increase in the rate of dry mass production during the reproductive period. This increase was associated with the increase in N assimilation in the reproductive period and the seed N concentration that remained the same as that at ambient CO2. Dry mass production and nitrogen assimilation did not increase in the vegetative phase in both lines. These results accorded with the amount of nodules in Enrei that increased at elevated CO2 especially after flowering. We conclude that the increase in N assimilation in the reproductive period would be the key for increasing soybean yield in the future high-CO2 world.  相似文献

This study reports survival and physiological responses of micropropagated Ceratonia siliqua L. cvs. Galhosa and Mulata plants during ex vitro acclimatization under ambient (AC; 330 mol mol–1) or elevated (EC; 810 mol mol–1) CO2 concentration and a photosynthetic photon flux density of 125 mol m–2 s–1. CO2 enrichment during acclimatization did not improve survival rate that was around 80 % for both treatments. Eight weeks after ex vitro transplantation, photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in acclimatized leaves were higher in comparison with those in in vitro-grown leaves, without any significant difference between CO2 treatments. Chlorophyll content increased after acclimatization. However, EC led to a decrease in the total amount of chlorophyll in new leaves of both cultivars, compared to those grown at AC. Soluble sugars and starch contents were not markedly affected by growth EC, although starch had significantly increased after transfer to ex vitro conditions. EC induced an increase in the stem elongation and in the effective life of leaves, and a decrease in the number of new leaves.  相似文献

The response of non-nodulated cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. cv Caloona) to a wide range of NO3 levels in the rooting medium was studied 40 days after sowing by in vitro assays of plant organs for NO3 reductase (EC 1.6.6.1) and analyses of root bleeding (xylem) sap for nitrogenous solutes. Plants fed 1, 5, 10, 20, and 40 millimolar NO3 showed, respectively, 64, 92, 94, and 91% of their total reductase activity in shoots and 34, 30, 66, 62, and 58% of the total N of their xylem sap as NO3. These data, and the absence in the plants of significant pools of stored NO3, indicated that shoots were major organs of NO3 assimilation, especially at levels of NO3 (10 to 40 millimolar) that maintained plant growth at near maximum rates. Partitioning and utilization of C and N were studied in nodulated, minus NO3 plants and non-nodulated plants fed 10 or 20 millimolar NO3, the levels of NO3 which gave rates of growth and N assimilation closest to those of the symbiotic plants. The conversion of the C of net photosynthate to dry matter was similar in nodulated plants (67%) and NO3-grown plants (64%), but greater proportions of photosynthate were translocated to below ground parts of nodulated plants (37%) than of NO3-fed plants (23 to 26%). Greater photosynthate consumption by nodulated roots was associated with proportionately greater root growth and respiration and 2-fold greater export of C in xylem than in the NO3-fed plants. Theoretical considerations suggest that the elevated CO2 output of nodulated roots was due not only to CO2 loss associated with nodule function, but also to a much greater nonassimilatory component of respiration in the supporting root of the nodulated plant compared to roots of the NO3-fed plants. Data are compared with previously published information from other legumes.  相似文献

Nodulated and unnodulated soybeans (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) were grown in N-free or N-containing nutrient solutions, respectively. Starting at the initial flowering stage, and throughout reproductive growth, the NO3- absorption capacity of roots of intact plants from both treatments was determined in short-term uptake experiments. Acetylene reduction activity was determined for nodulated plants. Nitrate absorption rate, expressed on a root dry weight basis, was greatest at early flowering for both nodulated and unnodulated plants. At 33 days after germination, the NO3- absorption rate of unnodulated plants was twice as great as that of nodulated plants. During the remainder of the sampling period, NO3- absorption rates of both nodulated and unnodulated plants decreased progressively and similarly. Maximum nodule specific activity occurred 30 days after germination, or initial flowering. However, maximum total C2H2 reduction activity, oner plant basis, was observed during the early stages of pod-filling. Compared to unnodulated plants dependent on NO3- assimilation, nodulated plants were smaller, had less N in vegetative tissues, and produced less seed per plant. We suggest that the higher NO3- absorption rate of unnodulated soybean roots, particularly during early reproductive growth, may have reflected a more favorable supply of photosynthate translocated to the roots from larger, more vigorous, non-N-stressed shoots.  相似文献

Soil N availability may play an important role in regulating the long-term responses of plants to rising atmospheric CO2 partial pressure. To further examine the linkage between above- and belowground C and N cycles at elevated CO2, we grew clonally propagated cuttings of Populus grandidentata in the field at ambient and twice ambient CO2 in open bottom root boxes filled with organic matter poor native soil. Nitrogen was added to all root boxes at a rate equivalent to net N mineralization in local dry oak forests. Nitrogen added during August was enriched with 15N to trace the flux of N within the plant-soil system. Above-and belowground growth, CO2 assimilation, and leaf N content were measured non-destructively over 142 d. After final destructive harvest, roots, stems, and leaves were analyzed for total N and 15N. There was no CO2 treatment effect on leaf area, root length, or net assimilation prior to the completion of N addition. Following the N addition, leaf N content increased in both CO2 treatments, but net assimilation showed a sustained increase only in elevated CO2 grown plants. Root relative extension rate was greater at elevated CO2, both before and after the N addition. Although final root biomass was greater at elevated CO2, there was no CO2 effect on plant N uptake or allocation. While low soil N availability severely inhibited CO2 responses, high CO2 grown plants were more responsive to N. This differential behavior must be considered in light of the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of soil resources, particularly N which often limits plant growth in temperate forests.  相似文献

Leaf level net photosynthetic rates (P N) of laurel oak (Quercus hemispherica) juveniles grown under contrasting nutrient and CO2 regimes were negatively correlated with red to far-red ratios, R/FR (690/760 nm), steady-state, solar-excited fluorescence ratios (r 2 = 0.66, n = 12) measured across 12 plant canopies. Laurel oak juveniles that had been subjected to nitrogen stress over a period of a year demonstrated higher R/FR than their counterparts that had been provided with sufficient nitrogen. Plants that had been grown at elevated CO2 concentrations, EC [700 mol (CO2) mol-1] also exhibited significantly higher R/FR when subjected to normal ambient carbon dioxide concentrations than their counterparts grown under ambient concentrations, AC [380 mol (CO2) mol-1]. All fluorescence measurements were obtained by observing a multi-plant canopy using a unique solar-blind passive sensor. This sensor, which utilizes Fraunhofer-line discrimination techniques, detects radiation at the cores of the lines comprising the atmospheric oxygen A- and B-bands, centered at 762 and 688 nm, respectively. These results support the use of solar-excited steady-state plant fluorescence as a potential tool for remote measurement of canopy radiation use efficiency.  相似文献

Increase in both atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2] and associated warming are likely to alter Earths’ carbon balance and photosynthetic carbon fixation of dominant plant species in a given biome. An experiment was conducted in sunlit, controlled environment chambers to determine effects of atmospheric [CO2] and temperature on net photosynthetic rate (P N) and fluorescence (F) in response to internal CO2 concentration (C i) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of the C4 species, big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman). Ten treatments were comprised of two [CO2] of 360 (ambient, AC) and 720 (elevated, EC) μmol mol−1 and five day/night temperature of 20/12, 25/17, 30/22, 35/27 and 40/32 °C. Treatments were imposed from 15 d after sowing (DAS) through 130 DAS. Both F-P N/C i and F-P N/PAR response curves were measured on top most fully expanded leaves between 55 and 75 DAS. Plants grown in EC exhibited significantly higher CO2-saturated net photosynthesis (P sat), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) efficiency, and electron transport rate (ETR). At a given [CO2], increase in temperature increased P sat, PEPC efficiency, and ETR. Plants grown at EC did not differ for dark respiration rate (R D), but had significantly higher maximum photosynthesis (P max) than plants grown in AC. Increase in temperature increased Pmax, R D, and ETR, irrespective of the [CO2]. The ability of PEPC, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, and photosystem components, derived from response curves to tolerate higher temperatures (>35 °C), particularly under EC, indicates the ability of C4 species to sustain photosynthetic capacity in future climates.  相似文献

Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration will likely cause changes in plant productivity and composition that might affect soil decomposition processes. The objective of this study was to test to what extent elevated CO2 and N fertility-induced changes in residue quality controlled decomposition rates. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was grown in 8-l pots and exposed to two concentrations of CO2 (390 or 722 μmol mol-1) and two levels of N fertilization (1.0 or 0.25 g l-1 soil) within greenhouse chambers for 8 wks. Plants were then chemically defoliated and air-dried. Leaf, stem and root residues were assayed for total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC), lignin (LTGA), proanthocyanidins (PA), C and N. Respiration rates of an unsterilized sandy soil (Lakeland Sand) mixed with residues from the various treatments were determined using a soda lime trap to measure CO2 release. At harvest, TNC and PA concentrations were 17 to 45% higher in residues previously treated with elevated CO2 compared with controls. Leaf and stem residue LTGA concentrations were not significantly affected by either the elevated CO2 or N fertilization treatments, although root residue LTGA concentration was 30% greater in plants treated with elevated CO2. The concentration of TNC in leaf residues from the low N fertilization treatment was 2.3 times greater than that in the high N fertilization treatment, although TNC concentration in root and stem residues was suppressed 13 to 23% by the low soil N treatment. PA and LTGA concentrations in leaf, root and stem residues were affected by less than 10% by the low N fertilization treatment. N concentration was 14 to 44% lower in residues obtained from the elevated CO2 and low N fertilization treatments. In the soil microbial respiration assay, cumulative CO2 release was 10 to 14% lower in soils amended with residues from the elevated CO2 and low N fertility treatments, although treatment differences diminished as the experiment progressed. Treatment effects on residue N concentration and C:N ratios appeared to be the most important factors affecting soil microbial respiration. The results of our study strongly suggest that, although elevated CO2 and N fertility may have significant impact on post-harvest plant residue quality of cotton, neither factor is likely to substantially affect decomposition. Thus, C cycling might not be affected in this way, but via simple increases in plant biomass production. Perennial ryegrass swards were grown in large containers on a soil and were exposed during two years to elevated (700 L L-1) or ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration at outdoor temperature and to a 3 °C increase in air temperature in elevated CO2. The nitrogen nutrition of the grass sward was studied at two sub-optimal (160 and 530 kg N ha-1 y-1) and one non-limiting (1000 kg N ha-1 y-1) N fertilizer supplies. At cutting date, elevated CO2 reduced by 25 to 33%, on average, the leaf N concentration per unit mass. Due to an increase in the leaf blade weight per unit area in elevated CO2, this decline did not translate for all cuts in a lower N concentration per unit leaf blade area. With the non-limiting N fertilizer supply, the leaf N concentration (% N) declined with the shoot dry-matter (DM) according to highly significant power models in ambient (% N=4.9 DM-0.38) and in elevated (%N=5.3 DM-0.52) CO2. The difference between both regressions was significant and indicated a lower critical leaf N concentration in elevated than in ambient CO2 for high, but not for low values of shoot biomass. With the sub-optimal N fertilizer supplies, the nitrogen nutrition index of the grass sward, calculated as the ratio of the actual to the critical leaf N concentration, was significantly lowered in elevated CO2. This indicated a lower inorganic N availability for the grass plants in elevated CO2, which was also apparent from the significant declines in the annual nitrogen yield of the grass sward and in the nitrate leaching during winter. For most cuts, the harvested fraction of the plant dry-matter decreased in elevated CO2 due, on average, to a 45–52% increase in the root phytomass. In the same way, a smaller share of the plant total nitrogen was harvested by cutting, due, on average, to a 25–41% increase in the N content of roots. The annual means of the DM and N harvest indices were highly correlated to the annual means of the nitrogen nutrition index. Changes in the harvest index and in the nitrogen nutrition index between ambient and elevated CO2 were also positively correlated. The possible implication of changes in the soil introgen cycle and of a limitation in the shoot growth potential of the grass in elevated. CO2 is discussed.Abbreviations 350 outdoor climate - 700 outdoor climate +350 L L-1[CO2] - 700+ outdoor climate +350 L L-1 (CO2) and +3 °C - N-- low N fertilizer supply - N+ high N fertilizer supply - N++ non-limiting N fertilizer supply - DM dry-matter  相似文献

Plant mineral nutrients such as phosphorus may exert major control on crop responses to the rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. To evaluate the growth, nutrient dynamics, and efficiency responses to CO2 and phosphorus nutrition, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) was grown in controlled environment growth chambers with sufficient (0.50 mM) and deficient (0.10 and 0.01 mM) phosphate (Pi) supply under ambient and elevated CO2 (aCO2, 400 and eCO2, 800 µmol mol?1, respectively). The CO2 × Pi interaction was detected for leaf area, leaf and stem dry weight, and total plant biomass. The severe decrease in plant biomass in Pi-deficient plants (10–76%) was associated with reduced leaf area and photosynthesis (Pnet). The degree of growth stimulation (0–55% total biomass) by eCO2 was dependent upon the severity of Pi deficiency and was closely associated with the increased phosphorus utilization efficiency. With the exception of leaf and root biomass, Pi deficiency decreased the biomass partitioning to other plant organs with the maximum decrease observed in seed weight (8–42%) across CO2 levels. The increased tissue nitrogen (N) concentration in Pi-deficient plants was accredited to the lower biomass and increased nutrient uptake due to the larger root to shoot ratio. The tissue P and N concentration tended to be lower at eCO2 versus aCO2 and did not appear to be the main cause of the lack of CO2 response of growth and Pnet under severe Pi deficiency. The leaf N/P ratio of >16 was detrimental to soybean growth. The tissue P concentration needed to attain the maximum productivity for biomass and seed yield tended to be higher at eCO2 versus aCO2. Therefore, the eCO2 is likely to increase the leaf critical P concentration for maximum biomass productivity and yield in soybean.  相似文献
