Adults of the palaemonid prawn Palaemon macrodactylus Rathbun, 1902 were reported for the first time from the southwestern Atlantic waters. Males and ovigerous females were collected in Mar del Plata harbor (38°03′ S; 57°31′ W), Argentina; larvae obtained from one of the collected females were reared in the laboratory until the juvenile stage. The geographical range of P. macrodactylus was previously restricted to the Pacific Ocean: it was originally described in Japan and has been reported as an invasive species in the western coast of USA in the 1950’s and in Australia in the 1970’s. Recently, this prawn has been also reported from European waters.  相似文献

Monitoring of Phaeocystis since 1948 during the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey indicates that over the last 5.5 decades the distribution of its colonies in the North Atlantic Ocean was not restricted to neritic waters: occurrence was also recorded in the open Atlantic regions sampled, most frequently in the spring. Apparently, environmental conditions in open ocean waters, also those far offshore, are suitable for complete lifecycle development of colonies (the only stage recorded in the survey). In the North Sea the frequency of occurrence was also highest in spring. Its southeastern part was the Phaeocystis abundance hotspot of the whole area covered by the survey. Frequency was especially high before the 1960s and after the 1980s, i.e., in the periods when anthropogenic nutrient enrichment was relatively low. Changes in eutrophication have obviously not been a major cause of long-term Phaeocystis variation in the southeastern North Sea, where total phytoplankton biomass was related significantly to river discharge. Evidence is presented for the suggestion that Phaeocystis abundance in the southern North Sea is to a large extent determined by the amount of Atlantic Ocean water flushed in through the Dover Strait. Since Phaeocystis plays a key role in element fluxes relevant to climate the results presented here have implications for biogeochemical models of cycling of carbon and sulphur. Sea-to-air exchange of CO2 and dimethyl sulphide (DMS) has been calculated on the basis of measurements during single-year cruises. The considerable annual variation in phytoplankton and in its Phaeocystis component reported here does not warrant extrapolation of such figures.  相似文献

The onychopod cladoceran Cercopagis that recently invaded the Baltic Sea is reported from new zones of the northern Baltic proper. Because of successful survival and an expanding distribution range, the addition of Cercopagis to the Baltic fauna is considered to be permanent. What has previously been cited as Cercopagis pengoi encompasses the morphology of several other species, subspecies and forms. Either a number of morphologically similar species is present, or there is a number of spurious species in Cercopagis. The last hypothesis is favoured. The spatial distribution pattern of Cercopagis, as well as that of total zooplankton, was correlated with depth. Deep (>100 m) and shallow (<10 m) stations had significantly lower abundance than stations of intermediate depth (<100 m). An overview of the distribution of C. pengoi group in fresh and brackish waters suggests a high tolerance to environmental factors, but with differences among taxa. Due to this ecological flexibility, the colonization of the Baltic is not unexpected. Increasing salinity may restrict dispersal of cercopagids to the southern areas of the Baltic and to the North Sea, but inland lakes (e.g. in Sweden) present an ecological profile suitable for colonization.  相似文献

Senecella calanoides Juday has been reported from fresh-water lakes of North America, Northern Siberia and inshore brackish waters of Kara and Laptev Seas. Investigation of 11 females and 2 males from the brackish waters of Neelov Bay (Laptev Sea) shows that second species, Senecella siberica sp. n., can be distinguished from S. Calanoides Juday by the greater size, a slightly asymmetrical female genital segment, the 3 external spines on the 3d exopod of 2 to 4th swimming legs and by more longer left endopod digitiform process of the male 5th legs. S. siberica seems to be brackish-water euryhaline species, inhabiting brackish waters with salinity from 1 to 22. The genus belongs to the family Aetideidae and is the only genus with freshwater representatives.  相似文献

Introduced species have recently become a major concern in ecological research and aquatic conservation. This is due to an increasing appearance of introduced species at a global scale and a multitude of negative impacts on native biota. However, impacts of introduced species are not necessarily only negative. The epizootic American slipper limpet Crepidula fornicata, native at North American Atlantic shores, was introduced to Europe in the 1870s and is now widespread along the Atlantic coast of Europe. Negative effects like trophic and spatial competition have been reported. In its major basibiont in the Wadden Sea, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, attached limpets reduce survival and growth. However, a laboratory experiment also showed sea star (Asterias rubens) predation on mussels with limpet epigrowth to be three times lower than in unfouled mussels. Hence, although negatively affected by C. fornicatain one way, this epigrowth is beneficial for fouled mussels in another. This indicates that the actual impact of an introduced species is a complex interplay of positive and negative effects which may only be revealed experimentally.  相似文献

The potentially toxic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller has successfully established in the Baltic Sea in the last two decades. A review of the invasion history is presented as well as new data on the spatial and inter-annual variability of this species and its relation to salinity, temperature, and nutrient concentrations. A short literature review of the morphological characters of the Baltic P. minimum is also included. From 1993 to 2002, P. minimum was a regular component of the summer and autumn plankton flora of the Baltic Sea proper and the Gulf of Finland. Its abundance varied considerably inter-annually and did not show any clear trends during the period. Abundance of P. minimum was significantly higher in the nutrient-enriched Bay of Mecklenburg (German coast) and the southern Baltic proper than in the central and northern Baltic proper and the Gulf of Finland, where its abundance was mostly sparse. In coastal waters P. minimum occasionally reached densities of several million cells per litre and dominated phytoplankton biomass (>90%).Abundance of the Baltic P. minimum was generally not related to salinity or temperature. It could be a dominant species at both high and low salinity (over 15 and 4.8 PSU), and its temperature range was broad (from 2.7 to 26.4 °C). However, dense populations usually occurred from July to October at temperatures above 10 °C.Further, there appears to be a positive correlation between the success of P. minimum in the Baltic Sea and high concentrations of total phosphorus and nitrogen. This tolerant and morphologically variable dinoflagellate seems to be a morphospecies without subtaxa, which can expand its range in the Baltic Sea, especially in nutrient-rich coastal waters.  相似文献

Crangon franciscorum and Palaemon macrodactylus are carnivorous shrimp in the Sacromento-San Joaquin River Delta. These shrimp prey primarily on the opossum shrimp, Neomysis mercedis. Behavioral and morphological differences result in P. macrodactylus stomachs containing a greater number of prey, on the average, than C. franciscorum. Dietary overlap and similarity were high (>80%) throughout the study. C. franciscorum is generally larger than P. macrodactylus and is able to ingest larger prey. This results in some size-related resource partitioning.New York State Museum Journal Series No. 284.  相似文献

In this paper, the detailed morphology of Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu from both field samples and cultures was examined, and a taxonomic comparison was made between P. donghaiense and some related Prorocentrum spp. using morphological and molecular data and other published information. There were distinct differences among these species in morphological characteristics that historically have been presented as conservative features. The discrepancies extended beyond that of individual variations within the same species due to environmental factors. Therefore, these morphological features may not be conservative but, rather, polymorphic depending on environmental conditions. Based on this analysis, we suggest that the high-biomass bloom-forming species in the East China Sea, previously reported as Prorocentrum dentatum Stein, is P. donghaiense Lu. The species reported from the East China Sea and Japanese and Korean waters appear to be the same species. Molecular data also suggest that P. dentatum (CCMP1517) and P. donghaiense are genetically identical. Therefore, the geographic distribution of P. donghaiense may be much wider than expected.  相似文献

The screening of 2,735 eels from European waters and aquaculture farms was conducted using mitochondrial Cytochrome b and 16S rRNA gene fragments amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Reaction products were either sequenced directly or subjected to analysis using restriction fragment length polymorphism which resulted in species-specific restriction patterns. Beside the expected European eel, Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), the American eel, Anguilla rostrata (Le Sueur, 1817), was also identified in samples from both aquaculture (N = 40 out of 1,025) and from natural waters (N = 44 out of 1,710). The life stages of American eels identified from several German waters draining to either the Baltic Sea and the North Sea ranged from elver to silver eels. This indicates that stocking with glass eels or elvers must have occurred several times most likely in the period from 1998 to 2002. The application of a fast and precise method for species identification and genetic monitoring of eels delivered for stocking is therefore essential for maintaining the autochthonous species composition in future. The American amphipod species Melita nitida andIncisocalliope aestuarius have been found in the WesternScheldt estuary (the Netherlands). This is the first record of these species inthe north-east Atlantic. Shipping is the most likely vector of introduction.Thedistribution of both species is investigated and compared with the distributionand the microhabitat of co-occurring amphipod species. Melitanitida is known from both the east and west coast of North Americaand I. aestuarius originates from the east coast of NorthAmerica. Until now neither has been reported from other parts of the world. Inthe Netherlands both species are restricted to the mesohaline part of theWestern Scheldt. Melita nitida occurs predominantly underPacific oysters at the underside of boulders, mainly sublittorally.Incisocalliope aestuarius is associated to hydrozoans.Bothmicrohabitats are hardly utilized by other amphipod species. Therefore, thetheory that the existence of many empty niches in north-western Europeanbrackish waters make this environment particularly susceptible to invasions ofalien species is corroborated. The application of hard substrates in a regionoriginally predominated by soft bottoms moreover facilitates the introductionofexotic species. The species community on hard substrates in the mesohaline partof the Western Scheldt contains a high proportion of introduced species:approximately one third of the macrofauna species is of allochthonous origin.  相似文献

Since 1985, the nonindigenous polychaete species Marenzelleria neglecta has been found in the Baltic Sea. The species, which was introduced by ship ballast water, spreads rapidly and dominates in many habitats today. Using three gene segments of the mitochondrial DNA (16S rDNA, Cytochrom oxidase I, Cytochrom b), we investigated four populations of the western and northern Baltic Sea in a preliminary survey and compared them with four other populations from the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and from the Arctic. First, we could demonstrate the applicability of the markers to discriminate the species with certainty. Second, with M. viridis and M. arctia, we could detect two more species of the same genus, which have recently been introduced into the Baltic Sea. One of these, M. arctia, was hitherto known as an exclusive arctic member of the genus. The impact of these two recently invaded Marenzelleria species onto the autochthonous fauna needs to be evaluated in the future. The Baltic Sea as a ‘natural aquarium’ now offers the possibility to investigate sibling species simultaneously. However, correct identification and denomination of Marenzelleria species are indispensable prerequisites for all future studies. Molecular markers allow the exact identification of all Marenzelleria species and must be used whenever a classical taxonomic identification is uncertain.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of Pseudo-nitzschia species, associated phytoplankton flora and its relationships with main environmental factors were studied for the first time in continental shelf surface waters of the Argentine Sea (Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, 38–55°S). Both qualitative and quantitative samples, collected during summer and fall 2003, were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that the genus Pseudo-nitzschia has a wide distribution along the studied area. It was present at low densities, with infrequent peak abundances and appeared most frequently as a minor component of the diatom populations that typically develop on the continental shelf of the Argentine Sea. Moreover, phytoplankton communities were numerically dominated by unidentified phytoflagellates (≤5 μm) throughout almost all samples analyzed. Eight Pseudo-nitzschia species were identified in our study: P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. pungens, P. cf. subcurvata, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides. Of these, P. heimii, P. lineola and P. turgiduloides are new records for the Argentine Sea. Their presence in the area is attributable to the influence of southerly cold water masses. Spatial and temporal variations of the environmental parameters recorded in the study area generally determined the distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia species. P. pungens and P. australis were widely distributed and reached high densities, especially in waters with elevated temperatures and salinities (around 15 °C, 33.8 psu) and low nutrients concentrations. On the other hand, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides showed a more restricted distribution, with lower densities in relatively cold, less saline (8 °C, 32.45 psu) and nutrient-rich waters. From the Pseudo-nitzschia species found throughout this survey, P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. pungens and P. turgidula are known as domoic acid (DA) producers around the world, but there is little information on the potential toxicity of these species in Argentina.  相似文献

The eelpout Lycodes soldatovi was found at depths of 153 to 1005 m in the Sea of Okhotsk; however, it usually inhabits the depth range of 400 to 800. The mean and maximum abundance and the biomass of this species were 198.5 and 1037 individuals per km2 and 173.7 and 1275 kg/km2, respectively. In view of the data on the distribution of young fish (up to 30 cm in total body length) and the reports on the absence of Lycodes larvae, a hypothesis was developed that this species spawns predominantly in the waters off western Kamchatka and eastern Sakhalin at the depth range of 700 to 900 m. Large individuals (>50 cm) exhibit higher migratory activity and are more tolerant of environmental conditions. That is why they are encountered throughout the distribution area of this species, even in subzero temperature areas. Lycodes soldatovi seems to be a typical inhabitant of the Sea of Okhotsk, except for the waters off the South and Central Kuril Islands and the Pacific waters off the North Kuril Islands.  相似文献

The finding of the actinia Synandwakia hozawai in the coastal waters of northern Sakhalin (Sea of Okhotsk) suggests a wider range of this species, which was previously only known to inhabit the coastal waters of eastern Japan. Data are presented on the morphology of the S. hozawai specimen from the Sea of Okhotsk and the types of its nematocysts.  相似文献

Results of field surveys, stomach content analysis, and laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption at different salinities in the exotic shrimp Palaemon macrodactylus and its native counterpart P. longirostris from the Guadalquivir estuary (SW Spain) were used to assess interaction between both species. After its first record in this estuary in 1998, P. macrodactylus has shown a gradual increase in density and its estuarine population has been clearly dominated by juveniles. Feeding habits of both shrimps indicated a strong trophic overlap between them, with mysids as main prey. Their salinity-related and spatial distribution patterns show that maximal inter-specific overlap between the two populations occurs in the inner, less saline part of the estuary. Specific oxygen consumption rates under different salinities and water oxygen concentrations suggest a more efficient metabolism and a higher tolerance to hypoxic conditions in brackish waters by P. macrodactylus than by P. longirostris. Such inter-specific physiological differences could have made it possible for the exotic P. macrodactylus to invade an estuarine stretch that, prior to its arrival, was infra-utilized by native species.  相似文献

The caprellid amphipod Caprella mutica is indigenous to coastal waters of north-east Asia and was first recorded in European waters in 1995. We now detected mass occurrences of > 3000 individuals per m2 in harbours of the two islands of Sylt and Helgoland in the German Bight, North Sea. Currently, Caprella mutica seems to be restricted to artificial hard substrata but we expect it to become a new species in natural hard bottom assemblages of that region as well.  相似文献

The finless porpoise, Neophocaena phocaenoides, is endemic to the coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Persian Gulf to Japan. Nine tetranucleotide microsatellite loci were isolated from the finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides). Polymorphism of each locus was assessed in 39 unrelated individuals from the Yellow Sea and the South China Sea of the Chinese waters. The number of alleles per locus varied from 2 to 11. The ranges of observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.154–0.795 and 0.146–0.839, respectively. Cross-species amplification of these loci was tested in other cetacean species. These microsatellite markers described here will be suitable for population genetic studies of finless porpoises and other cetacean species.  相似文献
