Mating, nesting and hatching of the Green sea turtle on Mariculture Ltd's farm on Grand Cayman Island, BWI in 1973 were recorded in a previous paper. The results described were the first of their kind, so that events in the farm breeding colony in the following year were awaited with much interest, especially as to hatchability of the eggs. The observations made in 1974, which extended and mainly confirmed those made in 1973, are described below.  相似文献

In the absence of existing farm stocks to draw on, a pioneer farm must obtain its foundation material from the wild, but with as little disturbance to wild populations as possible.
This paper describes the collection in 1971–73, with the approval of the appropriate authorities, of 188,568 eggs of the Green sea turtle from beaches on Ascension Island, Guyana, Surinam and Costa Rica for hatching at the Mariculture Ltd farm on Grand Cayman Island, BWI. Almost all of these eggs came from nests doomed by tidal washout or volcanic sand so that the loss of hatchlings to the wild was small in comparison with the number of eggs collected.  相似文献

The collection of eggs of Chelonia mydas from beaches on Ascension Island and elsewhere for hatching at the Mariculture Ltd farm on Grand Cayman was described in a previous paper (Simon, 1975). Improved organization of these collections has made it possible to record many incidental observations which throw light on the nesting behaviour and performance of the female Chelonia , and Ascension Island, because of its small size, numerous beaches and good communications, proved to be particularly favourable for such research. The present paper records observations made in February and March 1973 and 1974. The second author has contributed only by the analysis of the data and the preparation of the paper.  相似文献

Notes are based on a collection of 700 skins. Extensions of range include Trachylaemus p. togoensis, Prodotiscus i. flavodorscdis, Campethera n. nivosa, Bleda canicapilla, Phyllastreplms i. icterinus, Pedilorhynchus c. aximensis, Sylvia bnrin, Apalis c. caniceps, Macrosphenus concolor , and Spermophaga h. togoensis recorded from Nigeria and Apus c. strenbelii from West Africa for the first time.
Taxonomic points include reasons for regarding Centropus epomidis as a colour phase of Centropus senegalensis and Sylvietta flavixentris nigeriae as a synonym of Sylvietta flainventris.
Dates of breeding are given for many species, and nests and eggs arc described. Indicator indicator was found in the nest of Hirundo setnirufa.

The objective of this study was to develop a method for calculating economic values of clinical mastitis (CM) and somatic cell score (SCS) for inclusion in a dairy cattle breeding goal in the context of a country where farm production and economic data are scarce. In order to calculate the costs and derive economic values for SCS, a new model, 'milk collection method', has been developed and was compared with the Meijering model with individual and average SCS distributions. For the population, estimated economic values using the milk collection method were 1.3 and 2.4 times higher than those of Meijering method with average and individual SCS, respectively. The milk collection method needs no assumptions about normality of the distribution of SCS and because of a lack of normality in Iranian data for SCS, the Meijering method resulted in economic values that were biased downwards. Failing to account for the fact that milk price penalties for SCS are applied at milk collection rather than individual cow level resulted in a further large downward bias in the economic value of SCS. When the distribution of data is unknown or difficult to approximate or when a transformation to normality is not straightforward, the milk collection method would be preferable. Inclusion of SCS and CM in the breeding goal for Iranian dairy cattle is justified based on these results. The model to calculate mastitis costs proposed here could be used to estimate economic values for CM in other developing countries where farm production and economic data are generally poor.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, female three-spined sticklebacks(Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) show a mating preference for intenselyred-colored males. We verified this female choice in the fieldby observing a freshwater stickleback population in its naturalhabitat. During the egg collection phase, individual courtingmales were localized with the aid of a dummy of a ripe female,caught and photographed under standardized conditions, and released.After males had stopped collecting eggs, we counted the numberof eggs in the nests. The more intense a male's red breedingcoloration, the more eggs he received. Simultaneous female choiceexperiments in the laboratory suggested that ripe females ofthis population preferred redder males. Breeding activitiesof the males in the field were clustered and seem to be synchronizedwithin clusters. At one of the breeding sites, more intensered males were in better physical condition, but this was notthe case at another site. Although several synchronized breedingcycles were observed, the majority of males seem to completeonly one breeding cycle.  相似文献

Summary The breeding period of the Antarctic flea, Glaciopsyllus antarcticus (Smit and Dunnet), was synchronised with the breeding period of the host, Southern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialoides Smith). Although eggs were laid in the host nest, larvae developed amongst the down (particularly on the belly) of host chicks. Larvae were blood feeders and pupated amongst the down of host chicks. The development of pupae was arrested by ambient temperatures (mean temperature of +2.5°C in January), but recommenced when pupae were warmed. Female fleas comprised 55.8% of a collection of 1988 adults. Low numbers of adult fleas were found in nests prior to host breeding and subsequent to host fledging in comparison to numbers on the host; adults are therefore presumed to overwinter on the host, remote from the nest.  相似文献

Recent public interest in so-called “ethical” food production, and in particular the welfare of intensively housed farm animals, has been linked to an increase in sales of free-range eggs in several countries including Australia. Animal activist groups around the world have campaigned for the abolition of caged-egg production, retailers and large food companies are now sourcing less of these products, and governments in various locales have placed restrictions on caged-egg production. In addition, the recent focus on food production and preparation in popular culture including books, films, and television has made these practices, including those associated with eggs, more transparent to mainstream audiences. Previous studies have examined consumers’ willingness-to-pay for free-range eggs, and community attitudes to animal welfare, but there has been little qualitative work that unpacks a key assumption which underlies much discussion of these issues: that free-range egg purchases are primarily or solely linked to consumers’ desires to have egg production systems changed from intensive to free-range. This paper analyses qualitative research undertaken in Australia that explores consumers’ motivations for buying free-range (or cage-free) eggs, which was part of a larger study examining ethical foods. Qualitative analysis of focus groups and interviews involving 73 participants revealed that free-range and cage-free eggs are perceived as being better quality, more nutritious, and safer, and having better sensory characteristics, than caged eggs. In response to open-ended questions, free-range and cage-free eggs were mentioned much more frequently than free-range meats, and were described as easy to identify and affordable, compared with other products with humane production claims. Several participants even had begun keeping their own hens in order to have an alternative to purchasing caged (or expensive free-range) eggs. Although caged-egg production was described by many participants as cruel, the desire to purchase free-range eggs was more often described in connection to efforts to avoid “industrialized” food than in relation to taking a stance on the issue of caged-hen welfare.  相似文献

Overall microbial levels in the water system of a turbot farm were similar to those found in regular sea-water. At the end of an incubation period, however, the numbers of colony-forming units (CFU) in Artemiu cultures and turbot eg incubation jars were up to four orders of magnitude higher than sea-water level. Rinsing of the foot organisms (rotifers) prior to feeding them to turbot larvae, however, significantly reduced bacterial numbers, thus reducing the number of cross-contaminations. Several species of Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Vibrio among others, were identified in the eggs and larvae, or in the water in which these were incubated. Scanning electron microscop shows that the surface of unfertilized turbot eggs is a breeding ground for bacteria; the removal of these eggs from incubation jars is therefore recommended. The epidermis of turbot larvae was virtually free ofmicroorganisms.  相似文献

From 1995 to 1999, two species of endemic Hawaiian thrushes, `Oma`o (Myadestes obscurus) and Puaiohi (M. palmeri), were captive‐reared and re‐introduced into their historic range in Hawai`i by The Peregrine Fund, in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey–Biological Resources Division (BRD) and the Hawai`i State Department of Land and Natural Resources. This paper describes the management techniques that were developed (collection of wild eggs, artificial incubation, hand‐rearing, captive propagation, and release) with the non‐endangered surrogate species, the `Oma`o; techniques that are now being used for recovery of the endangered Puaiohi. In 1995 and 1996, 29 viable `Oma`o eggs were collected from the wild. Of 27 chicks hatched, 25 were hand‐reared and released into Pu`u Wa`awa`a Wildlife Reserve. Using the techniques developed for the `Oma`o, a captive propagation and release program was initiated in 1996 to aid the recovery of the endangered Puaiohi. Fifteen viable Puaiohi eggs were collected from the wild (1996–1997) to establish a captive breeding flock to produce birds for re‐introduction. These Puaiohi reproduced for the first time in captivity in 1998 (total Puaiohi chicks reared in captivity 1996–1998 = 41). In 1999, 14 captive‐bred Puaiohi were re‐introduced into the Alaka`i Swamp, Kaua`i. These captive‐bred birds reproduced and fledged seven chicks in the wild after release. This is the first endangered passerine recovery program using this broad spectrum of management techniques (collection of wild eggs, artificial incubation, hand‐rearing, captive‐breeding, and release) in which re‐introduced birds survived and bred in the wild. When a pair of male and female ring doves in breeding condition is introduced in a breeding cage containing a nest bowl and a supply of nesting material, a regular and predictable sequence of behavioral changes can be observed. A complete breeding cycle consists of courtship and nesting (7–10 days), incubation (14–15 days), and parental care (21 days). A new cycle (recycling) starts following the departure of the fledglings. This study concerns itself with the occurrence of recycling before completion of a breeding cycle, with a special reference to the fertility of eggs. The fertility of eggs before and after oviposition regulates the timing of recycling. Laying infertile eggs as a result of having mated with impotent males (castrated + oil or castrated + testosterone proprionate) and then sitting on such eggs led to a 100% recycling with the shortest latency. In contrast, no doves recycled in the normal breeding pairs (females paired with intact males) until eggs were hatched and squabs fledged. For bird laying fertile eggs and sitting on infertile eggs or vice versa, half recycled, while the other half did not. The possibility that prolactin plays a role in mediating the onset of recycling was tested, and the significance of the results was discussed.  相似文献

We undertook breeding surveys between 2010 and 2011 to assess the status of breeding birds on 16 islands in the northern Saudi Arabia. Sixteen bird species were found breeding at three different seasons; i.e. winter (Osprey), spring (Caspian and Saunder’s Terns), and summer (Lesser Crested, White-cheeked, Bridled Terns). It is postulated that food availability is an important factor influencing the breeding of seabirds in the northern Saudi Arabian Red Sea. Several species laid eggs earlier in northern parts of the Red Sea than in southern parts. The predicted increases in temperatures (Ta) could have a negative effect on species survival in the future, especially on those whose nests that are in the open. Finally, disturbance, predation and egg collection were probably the main immediate threats affecting the breeding seabird species in the northern Red Sea.  相似文献

Wind farm implementation is a rapidly growing source of landscape transformation that may alter ecological processes such as predator–prey interactions. We tested the hypothesis that wind farms increase the activity of nest predators and, ultimately, increment ground-nest predation rates. We placed 18 plots in Iberian shrub-steppes (11 at control and seven at wind farm sites), each one comprised nine artificial ground-nests (three quail eggs/nest). Artificial nests were placed during two events: at the beginning (April) and at the end (June) of the breeding season in 2016 (n?=?324 artificial nests). We estimated the relative abundance of avian and large mammalian predators in the surroundings of each plot and recorded nest fate after 12 days exposure. We also measured variables at landscape and microhabitat scale that potentially affect predator abundance and nest predation. Wind farm sites contained higher cover of gravel roads and more large mammalian predators. Moreover, the abundance of large mammalian predators increased with surrounding cover of both trees and gravel-roads. Avian predator abundance and nest predation rates did not differ between control and wind farm sites, though nest predation did increase with the surrounding cover of crops and gravel roads. Lastly, nest predation was higher at the end of the breeding season and decreased with moss and lichen cover. Our results support previous evidence on the increase of mammalian predator abundance as the surface area of gravel-roads increases, pointing towards a potential mechanism for wind farms leading to rise ground-nest predation. Future wind energy projects should minimize the development of gravel-roads for wind turbine access or maintenance.

Gull colonies world-wide have been harvested for their eggs for centuries with minimal knowledge of the impacts on breeding. Although most Laridae can replace lost eggs, they have comparatively high energetic demands for egg production. In this paper we assess the impacts of a licensed egg harvest on the breeding success of black-headed gulls Larus ridibundus, which nest colonially in an EU Special Protection Area in Hampshire, southern England. We compared egg volume, hatching and chick survival from harvested and un-harvested nests in central and fringe positions within colonies of various sizes, including colonies with no harvesting activity. Eggs from various laying stages were collected from harvested and un-harvested colonies of similar pre-harvest intrinsic quality, for comparison of their volumes, yolk-to-albumen ratios and eggshell thickness. Egg volume and the yolk-to-albumen ratio depended on laying time and location, with the largest eggs laid during the peak period by birds breeding in central positions on large colonies. Eggs produced by these peak layers also had the largest yolk-to-albumen ratios. Harvested sites were characterised by reductions in egg volume, yolk-to-albumen ratio and eggshell thickness, which translated to poorer hatching success and chick survival. Harvested sites also had a higher proportion of abnormal eggs, particularly taking the forms of small yolkless eggs and unpigmented eggs. The reduced breeding success on harvested colonies is likely to be linked to depletion of the female's endogenous reserves which can also reduce future survival and breeding propensity.  相似文献

The peak of the breeding season of the Dune Lark Mirafra erythrochlamys occurred in January and February and was not dependent on rainfall. Most nests were domed, although one undomed nest was recorded. Ninety-one percent of clutches were of two eggs (mean = 1,9; range 1–2; n = 11). The eggs are described and measurements given. Incubation, by the female only, began with the laying of the second egg, and hatching occurred after 13–14 days. Growth and development of nestlings are described. The young left the nest after 12–14 days, and post-nestling parental care lasted for approximately one month. Sixty-one percent of eggs hatched. and 28% produced young which successfully left the nest. Most losses of eggs and young were the result of predation.  相似文献
